I must say, I was impressed with this dining occasion in downtown Valpo! Live music on a Friday night and everything. :o] Top dishes we tried: - grilled fresh mushrooms with garlic and olive oil - the moorish style pork skewers; they were so tender and juicy! Honorable mention dishes: - garlic shrimp - meatballs - Patatas Ali-oli - jamon and manchego special Noticed on the way out that some of the crackers and cookies sold at the front of the restaurant were expired. :o\

The food was mediocre at best. Red pepper does NOT equal saffron. None of the food had much flavor really. Pork app was dry and tough, artichokes were obviously canned or jarred in a brine, NOT fresh as advertised. Empanadas were soggy and just tasted like tomato. Custard with poundcake dessert was the highlight, sadly. We went here because we had a groupon, would NOT go back.

Decided to visit on impulse- and we're glad we did! Made a reservation on Open Table but didn't really need it on a Friday night at 8:30. Service was great and food and recommended wine were both outstanding! For two people, the combination entree plate was the perfect amount of food and a great way to get a feel for a lot of the tapas all at once. We will definitely come back when we're in Valpo again!

Great authentic Spanish food! It was like being back in Valencia with my host Mother. Everything is delicious and the atmosphere is great. The first place I visited when I moved into town three years ago, and I love going back. Food takes a bit of time to come out, so definitely get an app, but worth the wait. Great things take time! One of my absolute favorite desserts is the frozen key lime pie - SO GOOD! Definitely a must-visit restaurant.

I brought my son here for his birthday and wish I hadn't. The food tasted very fishy like it was old fish the rice was like uncle ben's instant rice it was one of the worst restaurants I and my son have ever eaten. I would never eat there again the place should shut down and lock the doors for ever.

Unbelievable fresh fish on Friday Night! Get any of the fish specials. Owner Carlos Rivera, truly knows and understands seafood/fish. Carlos and Elena are wonderful hosts. The staff are very attentive, friendly and helpful.

Food is OK, off the pseudo-Mexican track food. However, chef has a very bad practice of serving "wild game", which is from ex-zoo animals killed at captive shoots by idiots with guns. This practice takes it off our list of acceptable dining since it is unethical IOHO.

Excellent food and service, husband had blackened lamb, I had sampler platter. Will be taking our mother next week for her birthday. Can't wait to share one of our new faves.

I'm really, really, really impressed with their Limonada. And the bread plates that they serve before your meal are really good. Other than that, I've never been all that impressed with Don Quijote. Of course, I don't tend to eat a lot (if any) meat so this leaves me stuck perusing the Tapas menu for options. And, although cheese and bread and wine sound like an ideal meal, it's probably a good idea to eat something a little more nutritionally sound.

My previous view of Spanish food as fish heads floating in saffron was totally blown away after a dinner here. The food was excellent, the atmosphere beautiful, and the service the best in Valpo, by far. I have tried several dishes and been happy with every selection.

This restaurant reminds me of a Hollywood simulation of a restaurant. The food is not very good and is quite pricy. What is really Spanish about it? I think the novelty of it being a Spanish restaurant in Valparaiso is what makes it stand out. Sangria = ick!

  • Belinda L.

Overpriced and overrated! For a $70 bill for two I didn't expect my pepito steak sandwich to be served on a store bought sweet burger bun! The peppers and onions were mush in a sauce that seeped into the bun. my husband's pork was dry and chewy. $21 for that plate. Food is dated and boring. Sat next to a vent blowing ice cold air out. Extremely honked off that I paid $70 for a pile of rubbish!

One word... Overrated! My mother-in-law was anxious to try Don Quixote out, so my husband and I went with his parents. We were all very disappointed. We got the tapas sampler to start.... there were a few decent things, like the meatballs and the potatoes. They got the paella, I got lamb, my husband doesn't remember what he got. I would not recommend the lamb and the in-laws thought the paella was incredibly fishy tasting. We all noticed a sort of re-heated/pre-packaged quality to the food... definitely didn't seem fresh. Nice atmosphere and wait staff took good care of us, but it wasn't enough to make up for the food.

bad sangria, decent tapas, great flan. it's definitely worth checking out if you are in town for dinner-but seriously-don't bother ordering the sangria. i am not even sure it is made with wine. it is definitely bitter, though.

  • L. R.

Oh I love this place. From the Sangria, to the desserts to the tapas - it's very good. It's a little pricey, but the food is always fresh. While you're there, stop in at their little store and buy some great aioli. I crave their gazpacho, potato salad and marinated mushrooms. Definitely a good place to experience the real Spain.

Very impressed. The food is top notch, with rich deep flavors and quality ingredients. There is a great variety on the menu; there is a tapas menu and also a selection of regular-size meals. Before our meal, we had bread with garlic butter, and an appetizer of marinated potatoes/onions/peppers which was amazing. The bread was nice and soft with a perfectly crispy crust. I recommend the tapas combination platter - croquetas were my favorites but also the tortilla a la española, chorizo, and spicy marinated mushrooms were excellent. The strip steak was good too (separate meal, not part of the platter). Just when I thought it couldn't get better, our waitress brought out the dessert tray full of unique options. Try the tarta de cuajada - a simple custard baked with a slice of pound cake in the center, or the red wine poached pear with ice cream. The perfect evening was rounded out with five-star service from a knowledgeable and friendly waitress, Spanish decor inside that made me wonder whether I was still in Indiana, and a fun little semi-connected shop next door full of Spanish import goods. Eating here was like a mini-vacation!

How cool to have an authentic Spanish restaurant in small town Indiana. The service here was very attentive. The portions were a good size and the presentation very pretty. I just didn't really think the food tasted that good. I had the paella and found the flavor lacking. It was very fishy, but for me, not in a good way. The other dishes we ordered also didn't hit a good note for me. This place is very popular with the locals so it much be doing something right. But based on my experience, I would not try it again and would probably not recommended it.

I had high hopes for Don Quijote, but I was disappointed. The food was not fresh, and service was underwhelming. There were fruit flies in my wine. The manager never came to see me. The bread was cold, not even room temperature. The croquetas and meatballs had good flavor, but the empanadas were greasy and tasted like they were made last week and heated up in a microwave. Again, disappointing. Go to the city for Spanish food. ¡Qué lastima!

Fantastic anniversary meal. Great food. Chef is always very accommodating to my requests to have the fish steamed rather than grilled. When you eat here it is like you have been brought into the chef's home and he is cooking for you. This is definitely an experience everyone should try. Probably my favorite restaurant as far as atmosphere and food quality. Wine is reasonably priced by the bottle.

We went tonight for our 40th anniversary meal. This is our favorite place for special occasions over the years. Carlos and Elena took great care of us. Everything from a cauliflower appetizer to my salmon and mahi mahi entree were delicious. Kathy had a tortilla espagnola, which she liked. We finished by splurging on Elena's Spanish style desserts. The sangria was also tasty and refreshing. It is a great restaurant with terrific community-minded owners.

Where does one stop between O'Hare and Warsaw, IN? DQ of course! Follow up visit to Carlos' place. This time with a work colleague. Started with 3 Tapas - Jamon, Patatas Bravas y Gambas en ajillo. My friend has never been to Spain and I warned him that Jamon addiction can result. It was great. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and with enough garlic to compliment. The problem I had was with the Patatas Bravas. They were similar to buffalo potatoes (if such thing exists). In Spain, these are typically a crispy fried potato with a savory (but not spicy) sauce. I We followed with a paella con mariscos for 2. My reference is two of the finest Arroz Valenciano restaurants (Pepica y Coso) in Valencia (home of the dish - yes, I use way too many of these ()). I felt it fell short in flavor. I wasn't getting the hit of saffron that I would have expected and it left the rice a bit under flavored. So, I'm probably a tough critic on this food. If you haven't experienced authentic spanish cuisine, this is your place. Our server was attentive and Carlos is an outstanding host.

I've always wanted to try this restaurant, but it just never came up. My fiancé and I tried it for Eat Up Wine Down, which I thought would be perfect to try a few things inexpensively. There were hardly any patrons, which was a bad sign. The waitress acted as though it was a huge inconvenience to seat us outside, and then left us out there with menus for such a long time that we were getting ready to leave. She was not friendly at all, and what made it worse was the warm farewell she gave to a table of guests who was leaving. The food was okay; I've had better tapas with much better service. The busser was the best part of the entire experience. We will not be back.

My all time favorite place in Valpo. I've been going here since I was a kid. The food is amazing! (Just make sure you like garlic) My family always does a bunch of Tapas and then shares. It's the only way I'll eat here. Their croquettas are heaven. Such incredibly moist chicken in a garlic herb butter sauce. It's like a chicken nugget on steroids. My second favorite tapa that I always make our table try is their Squid In It's Own Ink. Don't be fooled by it's appearnce it's actually very sweet and by the end of it you will be soaking up the ink sauce with your bread. For dessert you have to try Elana's Lime Pie. It's the best I have ever tasted and it has been a substitute for my birthday cake for the past 3 years. The service is great and we always love talking to Carlos and Elana. They will make you feel like family here.

Just had an amazing meal. The tapas were awesome. The T-bone steak was cooked perfectly and was so tender I was able to cut it with my butter knife. The paella (my favorite) was delicious. Desserts were incredible.

PLEASE DO NOT REPEAT OUR MISTAKE AND SAFE YOUR $50! I have never been treated so badly after spending $50 for two appetizers, rice with 1/5 of a small chicken, and a weak sangria! Don't get me wrong, the wait staff was very pleasant. My hubby is from the area and just wanted to try this place. So, we ordered two appetizers, a sangria, and a child size portion of the chicken and rice to start (mind you this was $44) and we asked the server if this is okay since we are just tasting--she nicely says yes. So then the owner Carlos goes out into the hall of his EMPTY restaurant and yells "kid portions are for kids" and other none sense. So, my husband gets up and goes into the hall and asks if everything is okay and if we should leave before we spend anymore money. Luckily for the wait staff they were very sweet and we stayed. We have had tapas in Indianapolis and we received more for our money in Indianapolis. Other incidents: The combo plate doesn't say what is included and there are no substitutions--even for one item that is beef for another item that is chicken and the same price...even if there are no other people in the restaurant and you don't eat beef...but whatever.... After ranting like a child the cook/owner Carlos stalks past us looking crazy twice without apologizing or acknowledging or existence in an EMPTY I repeat EMPTY restaurant. I know that you are thinking that we are dumb for staying but I wanted my hubby to get to try this overrated place that he has wanted to go to for years and I love him more than I dislike Carlos :-) The food was actually tasty but the portions were too small even for tapas. The empanada is one empanada cut in half for $6, usually you at least get two or three but it had a nice flavor. The chicken croquetas tapas dish was tasty but uneventful. The arroz con pollo lacked flavor and wasn't worth the hysterical fit that Carlos exhibited. We thought that it must be some magnificently delicious gem but it was meh even though we were getting hungry by the time it came out (20 minute wait which we were told after we ordered it). The Sangria tasted like watered down juice so we gulped it down like water lol. It was a nice juice to be honest...

I'm rating this place soooo low because of the treatment that my wife and I received from owner and founder Carlos Riviero. While asking questions about the menu and placing our order we had to listen to his hysterical tirades about us and our order! I know he was yelling about us and our order because we were the only patrons there. I was so upset by his yelling and pacing about that I offered to leave if our presence and money bothered him, but the wait staff reassured us that all was fine and his attitude was typical. The staff was great, the food was good leaning toward ok, the sangria was weak, and Carlos Riviero's attitude/childish behavior made everything extremely sub-par. I will never go to this restaurant again because I have never been treated so bad in any restaurant type establishment (even someone's home).

I think Don Quijote is overrated and overpriced. I would only dine at this restaurant if Valpo was having the Downtown Connection promotion in which some entrees can be discounted at 50%. The environment and ambiance is very cozy and romantic. It is an optimal choice for couples or group gatherings but I'm not sure if the original price range is affordable by college students. Although I must point out a pro is that they offer bottomless small bites to snack on prior to beginning the main course. I've been to Don Quijote twice. I ordered the Lomo de Cerdo con Pimientos on my first visit. It's supposed to be marinated grilled pork loin with roasted red peppers, served with boiled potatoes and vegetables. The meat was tough to carve into and the first bite was disappointing as was the following bites as I tried to finish my entree and not waste food. At the end of the meal, I really wanted to question how they had marinated it or did they? My second visit to Don Quijote was with a group of eight and I shared a paella marinera for two for approximately $45. It's a culinary classic but not quite at Don Quijote's. I wasn't impressed and the portion didn't seem to be enough for two people to share. I thought it was bland and I've definitely had better in Chicago.

This place has been here forever and next door they also have a Spanish import shop. There is something cute about the interior and the food is pretty good. This is traditional Spanish which has not seen much change over time. I thought the wine was over-priced and not a good value, and felt that there was something tired about the place. They service was very upfront and nice, but I left thinking I would not go back. It seems to do quite well with beach tourists staying up in Chesterton, and with Valparaiso University professors and administrators.

I went to this restaurant for a Spanish Club field trip and it was delicious and I LOVED IT and it filled me up completely. I never had Spanish cuisine before, so I can't really "judge" the authenticity. Everything was prepaid too and the food was good quality. We tried many of their tapas (appetizers) and a huge entrée, and the foods were served on large plates since we were going as a club - it was basically a buffet that they served to you. We arrived there and there was already fresh bread and pitchers of cold drinks on the table. The butter was unique too, it wasn't just your average butter but it was actually garlic butter because it had a distinct taste to it. The first thing they served to us was their tortillas de patatas (Spanish potato omelettes) which was really good. Then we got served sweet meat balls and deep-fried breaded cauliflower, I'm not sure what that was called in Spanish. One thing I do know about Spanish cuisine is that it's dominated by seafoods, since Spain is in a maritime nation, so the next food they served was the calamares a la romana, deep-fried squid calamari dish. The girl sitting next to me loved it so much, she ate two whole serving plates of it. They also served seasoned shrimps next, although each person could only take one because I'm guesing it was very expensive and they had limited amount of it. There was also a mushroom and spicy pork dish, not that I don't like mushrooms but I just didn't pay much attention to it as much as the other dishes. As for the pork, I can't eat pork because I try to stay away from pork most of the time, I'm not a Muslim though. Other foods we ate included spicy fried potatos, which I found really unique because I never had fried potatoes smothered in spicy sauce like that before. It kind of tasted like fried potatoes in chicken wing sauce. The big dish, that was part of our entrée was the arroz con pollo (Spanish chicken rice). The tapas were already served in big proportions, this rice was served on a huge pan and is perhaps what filled me up the most. While the girl next to me was chowing down on the calamares a la romana, I sat there an devoured almost 3/4 of a pan of rice. The rice was just too good, other all the deep-fried goodness perhaps the rice is what I liked the most. Too bad it wasn't paella, that's a seafood rice dish and my Spanish club teacher said people have too much problems with seafoods raning from allergies to taste buds. I seriously expected this to be an average, you come in there, they give you your dish, then sample some puny bowls of tapa and then you and go. But no, instead they ended up serving us a buffet, large tapas and a ginormous entrée and for a price of only $15? Not bad. I also got to meet some new friends, only for a day before returning back to ordinary boringness of everyday. The people around me though the place had an authentic Spanish enviroment, and I could agree. It had a medieval theme to it. And of course, because this is a Latin-influenced cuisine (like Italian and French), they seem to serve quality wine, but of course, we could not because we were a club of high school Spanish students so I can't judge the wine and alll. I can't really judge the pricing, I don't know just how much it really would cost if I went by myself, with a family and not a club.

Had dinner here last night. We started with a few tapas; potatoes in spicy tomato sauce, mussels, pork in skewer, gaspacho, and empanada. They were all good, though serving is a bit smaller than all the other tapas restaurant we've been. The mussels is probably what I liked the most. The sauce is not tomato based, but rather a garlicy seafood broth with olive oil, herbs/spices, and just enough acidity from lemons, it was really tasty. Didn't like the empanada, the shell was soft and mushy. Then we shared a paella, and it was one of the better paella I've had in while. Great balance of seafood and tomato flavor in the rice with chunks of fish, chicken, and shrimps. Plus it actually had some toasted rice at the bottom of the pan, which I think is a must for any paella. Service was nice and prompt, server checks on us after every dish was served, glass water always get the refill, they would replace our utensils and plates, the cook even came out and made his round to check on every customer. With a pitcher of red sangria and live music, and dinner was good.

Don Quijote is my favorite restaurant in NW Indiana - if it was a little closer and I was a lot richer I would go all of the time. The food is phenomenal, particularly the tapas - try the Chorizo, the Patatas Bravas, and the squid! The atmosphere is also good. When the restaurant is full the noise level stays low and it is easy to have conversation. Best of all, though, is the service. They give you many complimentary dishes, including salad tapas and port at the end. During my most recent visit, the owner and the cook both came out and talked to us, and they were accommodating for our large group (of 10), even serving our multiple orders of paella family style.

I was in town for work and came across this place by chance. I was with a co-work who is a vegan (his dinning options can be somewhat limited) and this place seemed to have more vegan options than most in the area. The staff here was very accommodating to him and his dietary needs. To start we shared the deep fried artichokes which were great and I also ordered the jamòn ham and manchego cheese tray which was delicious. As for entrees, I had a seafood paella and my co-worker had a vegan paella, both of which were very very good. If I am ever in Valparasio again, this place will be a must stop.

wow, has this area changed, since i went to college there in the late 90's, early 00's. the whole strip is bursting w/ new restaurants and bars! but this quaint little restaurant is still churning away authentic spanish food, in valpo, of all places. first and foremost, sophia is the best waitress...ever. if you get her, then you'll have a great night! yes, for the average person/couple/family, it's a very expensive place to go. so it's a place to go to for that extra special occasion. :)

My wife wanted to try a good Spanish restaurant so we stopped by don Quijote. The interior looked gorgeous simulating a Spanish courtyard with arches, and lovely set tables. We got there early Saturday at 3PM so we were the only diners. The service was excellent--we first ordered a pitcher of limonada (white sangria with lemon-lime and peaches which was very good and the background music set the stage for amore. My wife wanted to try the tapas, so she ordered the Empanada (very good) and the Pinchos Morunos which we both tried and agreed it was delicious. As for me, I tried the special: Mahi Mahi with Salmon, sauteed veggies and potatoes. I asked the server for blackened fish and rice as substitute and she was more that happy to oblige. I gotta say that the blackened fish with sauteed veggies and saffron rice was a wonderful treat for my taste buds. Also try the Ensalada (red skinned potatoes in a garlic oil/green bell pepper dressing). After we ate it I placed my bread in the oil. We will definitely go back for more. Thanks Carlos for a great meal. P.S. Check out the import shop. It's worth your time.

A few days ago a coworker and I dined at Don Quijote as we were heading back to the Indy area, returning from a 2-day trip in Illinois. I recommended to my coworker that we pay a visit to Don Quijote, a restaurant I had visited a few times before. So we took a little detour to eat at Don Quijote, and I was glad we made the trip! I don't know a lot about Spanish foods, so I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the dishes, but I can vouch for the delicious-ness of the food we enjoyed at Don Quijote, and the great service we experienced. Looking at the menu, there were a lot of good choices, but we settled on the traditional seafood paella for two. It took a little while for the kitchen to prepare the meal, but it turned out to be a wonderful treat! The saffron rice was nice, delicate and lightly spiced with peas mixed in. The paella was packed with delicious, mouth savoring seafood- crab legs, shrimp (unfortunately still with shells on them), cod and octopus. We also share a half pitcher of delicious sangria (with lots of berries inside!)... and it was more like 2/3 of a pitcher too. We topped off our meal with yummy desserts- I had a caramel flam that was very tasty. The waiter did a decent job serving our meals (but maybe a little too business-like), but the proprietors were very friendly and outgoing and even offered us complimentary glasses of port wine! And finally, the restaurant ambiance and atmosphere was very enjoyable. That evening there were two musicians playing traditional Spanish music on guitars and singing. Very nice job. Also, the restaurant was nicely decorated with Spanish tiles, painted murals, and even balconies and street lamps linining the dining hall! The entrees were a little pricey, but this was a special occasion and we enjoyed an exceptional Spanish dish with not run of the mill ingredients. All in all, a dining highlight and I would definitely recommend a detour to visit Don Quijote!

If you're driving along the 94 looking for dinner options, look elsewhere - it's a long way to Valpo. If you're going there anyway, though, and you're in the mood for a leisurely dinner, this is worth a look. Spanish food doesn't give vegetarians a lot of options; you're basically looking at the Portuguese salad, one of the tapas, or the vegetarian paella (not on the menu but they'll mention it if you ask). The tapas combination plate is set, so you can't get that unless you want to be facing down the meatballs. I chose the paella (which takes 30 min to prepare), the limonada (iced white wine with apples and cinnamon; think a white sangria), and the tarta de cuajada. The paella was good but not particularly memorable; it's about 4 cups of seasoned rice, generously garnished with artichoke bits and vegetables. They seemed overdone but I'm not a paella expert; perhaps they're supposed to be. The garlic olive oil butter for the bread was amazing; the limonada nice but I probably wouldn't get it again. (The "one glass" size is easily two glasses; it comes in a little pitcher.) The tarta de cuajada is a stiffish vanilla custard with a piece of pound cake embedded in it; it's good. Meal comes with a little salad with oil (lots) and vinegar dressing and a glass of homemade port with your bill. Prices are a bit high (the paella is $22) but this isn't a Subway. The service was very attentive and I appreciated the waitress solving my "vegetarian in a Spanish restaurant" problem. The coffee is excellent and the port very good if you like it sweet (I do). If they sold this I'd buy a bottle. The front of the restaurant has various food and Spanish-themed items for sale, including little cookbooks, tinned octopus, and some interesting-looking cheeses. Overall, good food and a nice change of pace. You might wish to wear a sweater, though; the place was freezing and I finished dinner wearing my coat.

There are several things that keep us going back to Don Quijote. 1- The place is adorable. The lighting is romantic, and the music is nice. 2- We never order anything other than Tapas and desserts, and they are amazing. Talk about an authentic Spanish experience. 3- The sangrias....YUM! 4- The customer service is fantastic. The manager/owner always checks on us when we go there to make sure that our visit is enjoyable. She is so warm and friendly, wish all managers were that way.

Back in 2007 my friend and I were on a Bicycle tour from Philadelphia across the country. When riding through Indiana we saw sign after sign about the "Only Spanish restaurant in the State." Due to an injury we only made it as far as Chicago. An amazing friend of our in Michigan came down to pick us up, and offered to take us anywhere we wanted to go to eat. So naturally we chose Don Quijote. It has been almost 3 years since we've eaten there, and I still have dreams about it. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere was terrific (I love the giant Don Quijote silhouette mural on the wall) and the staff was very nice. I have made it my goal to make it out that way again, just for the food.

I just wanted to take to time to express how disappointed I am with your restaurant. My husband and I came to your restaurant in April of 2011 for our anniversary. The service was great and the staff was near our table to entire night. The live music was the perfect touch. The menu was explained to us and we were thrilled. We came again this year for our anniversary and had waited for our drinks to come for an hour. We ended up having two waiters trying to cover our table. Your servers just explained they had two parties to take care of and then us. It wasn't busy. We ate there for over two hours with horrible food and service. We were even brought out the wrong appetizer. The owner tried to make it up to us by giving us a shot of alcohol in the end. Not impressed and really ruined our night which I had really looked forward to. We stopped in last weekend and sat outdoors with my family. We thought we would give it another try. It was worse. We had an appetizer that came with no bread after 30mins of no bread, I went in and asked for it. By then our appetizer was cold. We never got refills nor did the others get there drinks until the meal came. We had over a $100 bill and absolutely no service. I was hot. When the owner came by our table he saw we had nothing with our appetizer, no drinks or silverware, he yelled at our server and then never came back to see how it was handled. When we finally got our bill after a 20mins wait for that, our server brought our mushrooms to say they were sorry? We said, why would we want an appetizer after our meal? really? Well it wasn't. I will never come back again nor will I recommend this place to anyone. They are only concerned with making a large party of people happy, than serving anyone else.

Wow! What a place! Let me state that my rating would be higher if a few food-details would be improved, as I can see where some corners were cut- using a slightly higher quality of fresh foods would make Don Quijote be a place to rave about for the entire Chicago region, and farther. The food itself had decent flavors, presentation, and textures, but little details seemed to stick out: pitted olives instead of non-pitted, frozen vegetables (served fully cooked) instead of fresh, and similar distractions marred an otherwise perfect food experience. Therefore, please consider the previous paragraph as you read on: I ordered tapas as appetizers for a meal, but could have easily made a number of them into a meal (as the Spanish do)--or ordered multiples of a few to be a "meal for one." The various options were well-portioned and priced. If I returned (and I plan to do so to dine here again), I could easily stay on this part of the menu without venturing into the other options and not feel too gypped with my dining experience. But why just limit yourself to their tapas when a full-menu awaits? I had a paella made that had decent flavors, but was hard to finish after pigging out on tapas beforehand. The sour, savory, textured rice-based dish was delicious, but suffered from the previously-mentioned "frozen veggies served hot" issue. I could see making the paella into a meal by itself. The presentation was decent. For dessert, a tray was brought out with more goodness on it than expected; all had a "home made" charm to them, like what you would get if you went to eat at a friend's house, or maybe at your parents' house, or similar--I recommend the flan, which had a wonderful burnt sugar unlike how I get it most places. I also recommend the cuajada, which has a consistency similar to flan or cheese and is a "personal recipe," made with a piece of cake embedded into it--you will rarely see cuajada outside of Spain, so I advise you to try it here while you can. Although I wimped-out on my wine selection here (I went for the home-made sangria, tastily served by the pitcher), the wine list had MANY bottles I would have loved to consume with the food, knowing of the vintage years, vitners, and varietals, if I did not need to drive afterwards-I highly recommend taking the time to peruse the ample and respectable wine list here-you will not be disappointed with several of the bottles on it. The decor looks a bit dated style-wise (the place is just over 25 years old, and some of the styling looks like it is 25 years old or more-not meaning worn-out, but merely "dated"), but was clean and resembled dining al fresco (in the main dining room--there is a more "private" area of several booths located behind the kitchen & restrooms). A local guitarist played various songs from a raised stage in the corner of the dining room-not too loudly, but enough to add positive ambience. I was lucky to be able to get a table here on a Saturday, as they were incredibly busy and usually require reservations for Saturdays. The staff was short-handed, but all of the few workers "tag teamed" very well--we did not feel slighted nor neglected in the least, and can only imagine how much more attentive things must be when they are fully staffed; they should be proud of their (overworked that evening) "skeleton crew." The hostess (whom I later learned is part owner) sounded as if we might have either a long wait for seating, or might not be able to get a table without reservations; thankfully we were shoehorned in with about a wait of one minute--or less. The owners both came to our table throughout the meal and were beyond thrilled to discuss Spain, its food, and its wines with us during quick breaks in cooking and serving-they seem to be very passionate about their establishment, the cuisine, and Spanish culture. To have found such a place to dine in Valparaiso, IN (of all places) was a welcome surprise to me, and I plan on returning to dine here again soon (all the while thinking that you, dear reader, should do the same). My 4/5 stars rating is rounded down from 4.5 stars only due to certain foodstuffs not being as high of a quality as I suspect can be found most times of the year - moving to a fresher ingredient supply on a few key items would definitely push Don Quijote up to 11 (ala "This Is Spinal Tap") on a 10 point scale; Cervantes might be proud of this gem..

I'll keep this Yelp simple.... The food was delicious and very authentic Spanish. From the appetizer, to the main course and even the dessert, my mouth was in constant awe. If you aren't familiar with Spanish food, do your homework before you go here so you know what you want, otherwise may take you a while to choose or ask your server for help on deciding. The atmosphere of this restaurant is very personal, perfect for dates. The owner is lively and will strike up a conversation with all the guest and assures perfect service! NOTE: Spanish food is pricey, but this place is worth every penny!!!

I'm not an expert on the nuances of Spanish food, but I can say that I do enjoy what they offer. NW Indiana needs to appreciate that even though Don Quijote is not the epitome of Spanish cuisine, they are, IMO, one of the better establishments in the area to dine at. Prices are comparable to what you'd pay in Chicago ($10-20 per person.) If I lived in the area, I'd dine here more often. If you've never had Spanish cuisine, its a great way to get introduced.

I was eager to check this place out based on the previous reviews. When we got their we were greeted and seated in a small room decorated by different spanish themes. The room is small and cozy which creates a nice romantic atmosphere. We ordered the scallaps as an apetizer which ended up being nothing special. I ordered swordfish while my wife ordered a steak dinner on their recommended list. My dish was good. The side dishes were delicious and the fish was above average. Unfortunately my wife's steak was not seasoned and very boring. And this was from their recommended list. Also for a Saturday night they have lots of help working but the place is so small that they all congregate near the back. This gives the feeling of people looking over your back all the time. The manager did personally go out and greet every guest which was nice. But I would have epected a little more flavor for the prices they have.
