I had heard of a good catfish place in Thorntown, IN. My wife and I went there early on a Saturday night to try it out. They open for dinner at 5:00 and we arrived there around 5:15 and were quickly seated. This is a large restaurant with a bar section, and 2 separate dining areas. We were in the Main Dining Room and had a booth near the door which was fine at first, but by 5:45 a crowd was forming and we had people directly behind us and on one side brushing against our table as they waited. We had to move any food items far from this side of the table to avoid people dragging their coats over our Food. We lucked out that someone did not have a cold, or flu, and coughing over our food. Felt like we were seated on a bus with people standing all around us. It was a cold night and several people would hold the door open as they waited letting in cold air. The booths are small and fine for two people, but with four I would prefer a table. The tables, in our dining room were in the middle with booths on both sides. The tables are in a straight line, one after another with little space between them so not conducive to have a intimate dining experience. But this is somewhat offset by the quaint small town setting. The restaurant in located right in downtown Thorntown about a mile or so West of Highway 52. They have a picture of their building on their website. You can park on the street. Primarily an older, rural crowd and lots of 4 person groups. There is a small selection of wines on the menu, but not a listing of their beers, but the server said they had a full bar and numerous beers. We had heard about the onion rings, offered in two sizes and we ordered the small. They were great and the small was just right for two as an appetizer. We saw a number of these come out to the tables so it is very popular. We of course ordered the catfish, in this case the three piece dinner. You get a whole fish, less the head so have to deal with the bones. But if you know what you're doing it's not a problem. The dinner is normally 15.95 but was the special that evening for 14.95. You get two sides, and I selected their vinegar cole slaw {very good} and baked sweet potato. My wife ordered a house salad which was one of the side selections. It was a nice size but mostly iceberg lettuce. You can get brown sugar on the side for the potato. Dinner comes with couple small pieces of Texas toast which was ok. The least expensive dinner is chicken or ham steak at 13.99. Looks like they should have low overhead and I would have expected lower prices, or larger dinners. The fish was very good. It had a light breading and was cooked just right. The pieces were not large, so not really a lot of meat. I would say there is only 1/4 inch of meat on either side of the bone, and their three piece dinner is equivalent to many places two piece dinner. Somewhat disappointed in the experience as I was expecting more. I would rate as average. Considered giving it 3 stars, but settled on 2. If we had a better seating arrangement may have rated higher.

I am from this area and have been here many times. Stookey's is a great little place to have dinner! The onion rings are worth the trip alone...the catfish is great, I mean it's fried fish so if you go there expecting fried catfish, you won't be disappointed. I have had the steak here and its just okay...stick with the fish and the onion rings and you'll walk away very happy! Small Town Indiana at it's finest!

Happy Stookeys customer for many years. The owner, John, is almost always in and always greets us personally, makes sure everything was cooked perfectly and if he has the time will sit down and chat. We're not anyone special, that's just how they treat everyone who walks in the door. The Catfish and onion rings are famous and are a must, however I think their steaks are the best thing on the menu. Always cooked perfectly, great cuts, and include two sides (I go for the vinegar slaw and hash browns). If you're there on the weekend the prime rib is killer. They have a number of local craft breweries on draft which is always nice and a full bar. I just wish they we're open Mondays!

Stookey's is our regular Friday night dining spot. Every meal starts with a well poured cocktail and the best onion rings on the planet. Next, a perfectly chilled salad with homemade dressing and delicious croutons. Lots of steak, chicken and seafood options, but definitely try the cowboy ribeye and sweet potato. I would brag on the desserts, but truth be told, you won't have room!

We have never been treated so well anywhere we have dined. The service is superb and so friendly. John Stookey, the owner not only sent my husband's steak back, but sent my dinner as well so we could eat together. Monica our server was a delight! As for the meal itself-Oh my stars and garters- it was so good!!!! Please do yourself a favor and try the onion rings!

This is the last place standing in Central Indiana serving what became a Hoosier country tradition. World class onion rings and whole fried catfish, just the right size and fried to perfection.

Great and attentive service. I passed on catfish and had Friday night prime rib special. Slightly overcooked but tender and flavorful. Onion rings were a great start. Light batter and thin onion, just like I like them. I passed on salad and had cole slaw, it was sweet and tangy and very finely chopped. It wasn't what I usually expect but enjoyed it. I live out of state and am visiting my parents, I will definitely recommend this place next trip.

The best onion rings you will ever have! Good old Indiana food that feels like home. Everything on the menu is good. My favorite is the prime rib and of course their famous catfish.

This is one of my grandparent's favorite places to eat because of the catfish. It's a small little place but people come from all around for the catfish and onion rings, which are both fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of onion rings, but the batter on these is much lighter than other places, which makes it perfect for me. I've learned that you need to get here right around 5 (when they open) or you'll have a wait for a seat and for the kitchen. By 5:30 the kitchen is usually backed up and by 5:45 there's a line for a seat.

Well, we headed up to Thorntown for a little view of turning leaves & sunshine at hubsters request. Most everything is still the same, please read my first review. They have new menus and added a couple things. We were glad to see the baked sweet potatoes w/brown sugar & cin. They were huge & tasty. Their salads are bigger than before. (I bring my dressing, don't like any of theirs, picky, yeah) Hubster always gets their vinegar slaw w/celery seeds. The OR were crispy & good but a little greasy. (maybe because we ate early) And OH The Catfish! Always great, never changing. 3 medium sized super crispy on the outside, tender & juicy on the inside!! I hesitated to take it down a star, but I just haven't been satisfied with the drinks there since the old guy left some years ago. He made everything perfectly. We always went for the catfish, OR & great cocktails. They have a beautifully stocked bar with everything to make anything! -but even with the turnover of bartenders the expertise to mix isn't there. I hate that they've turned into a "beer" and catfish place. It wouldn't take much to upgrade the veggies, salad dressings and definitely upgrade the white texas toast to some tasty quality rolls. I know in my first review I spoke of nostalgia, which never-changing Thorntown still holds, but maybe it's time to kick it up a notch here. --still all about the catfsh! Yum Yum

Best catfish around and onion rings to die for

One of my favorite places to go when I lived in Indiana. This is the kind of small town restaurant that never changes, which kind of makes me want to cry tears of joy. I miss home writing this! The catfish and the onion rings are fantastic. I used to get a shirley temple when I was a kid. They always served the applesauce on top of a piece of lettuce on a little plate. Maybe the best onion rings I've had anywhere. they are thin and crispy instead of super fat. They have certain things they serve and certains ways they served them. Love it.

We (two road weary travelers) arrived at the end of the lunch hour, as the buffet was being packed up, but the staff kindly seated and served us. The single serving onion rings were enough for the two of us to enjoy, with delicate and crisp breading and no corn meal or bread crumbs as filler. The burger and pork sandwich were both excellent. We were too full for dessert. So glad we ventured away from the usual highway rest stops - we'll stop by again any time we're near!

Some of the best onion rings I've ever had. The rest (catfish, hash browns, salad, very ordinary beer) was just fine, but nothing out of this world. Just a solid, A-OK (but somewhat run-of-the-mill) family restaurant. But those onion rings! Trust me.

My wife and I are always looking for places a little off the beaten path when we drive from Cincinnati to Chicago. We happened upon Stookey's just 3 miles west of I-65 at the Thorntown, IN exit. The extra 10 minutes was well worth it...we'll be back for sure. The owner and staff were all very welcoming. The waitress recommended the tenderloin sandwich and onion rings, which were both fantastic! We finished up with some refreshing and crunchy peppermint ice cream for dessert. We'll certainly try the catfish next time since they clearly have a knack for light fried food here!
