My brother and I stopped in for lunch at the bar. The bartender's service was questionable. The burritos are huge and well worth the price. If you do not order a drink at the bar, the complimentary chips and salsa are $1, that is what the bartender charged us for one refill. The only reason why we asked for a refill, was because we waited over 20 minutes for our food to arrive.

My boyfriend nor I will be visiting again any time soon. We've been here twice maybe the past 3 months. The first time we walked in & were greeted very rude by a server & hostess, they made us stand there for maybe a few minutes looking at us before we were sat. By the time we we're say there was no reason it should have taken so long because it was dead. & coming from someone who is a server I know of somebody is off shift they can transfer their table to the closer. It took a great while before we were finally greeted by our server. His service was horrible. Once we got our food & were eating we were never once asked by our server how our food was or anything. My boyfriend was sitting with an empty soda while our server walks past us & can clearly see cause we see him glance at us. It took us to stop him on one of his passings to ask for a refill. Our service there was basically drink order, food order, bill then he collected the money. Our second time which was just the other day it was even worse! Our server sees us as we got sat but he's sitting in the booth behind us talking to another co worker or his table. Then as about 10 minutes goes by he says I didn't see you guys in sorry. Okay, understandable I guess. You get carried away in conversation. Cool. Understandable. We never got his name nor told us specials. But every table after us that came in he tells the specials to. What made us any different?! As well as our previous experience we were not checked on to see if everything was tasting okay or anything. But once again my boyfriend is sitting with an empty cup 1/2 into our meal, & once again we had to stop our server to ask for a refill. Then he returns ten minutes later with his drink. When we go to pay for our bill he charger is correctly. But later on as I check my bank account I was charged not only my bill but as well as another charge for $68! I call & the manager tells me that it was comped off. Once again I'm a server, I understand that happens. But I at least have the decency to tell my tables my mistake. I was never aware what he did or received a voided receipt for it off my card. He just gave us our bill & that was it. & as soon as we stood up he took the checkbook. Now I'm again going from my reference as a server but you don't do that. You wait until your table is gone before grabbing the check book or take it if they hand it to you. Then he never said thank you. Or anything. Maybe that's just me. I don't expect perfect service but I don't expect bad service either. I ask to be checked on at least once twice tops. Just from these two experiences I will no longer be going to this place if it's my choice.

I pass by Jalapeño's a lot. I finally got a chance to try it out. The food was decent... Nothing to write home to mother but it was ok. I've had better Mexican food at a fast food restaurant. I had the chicken tacos with Spanish rice & beans. The tacos were ok. I was given an ample amount. Very filling. The rice was dry & I didn't eat the beans. The customer service was good. The server was attentive. She checked on our table enough where I didn't have to look for her if I needed something. Upon arriving, we hadn't sat down for 20 seconds before someone came to the table with salsa and chips...which by the way was excellent. The salsa was spicy, the way I like it. In addition, I ordered a side of guacamole ($2.99) which was also excellent. The margaritas were also good!

If you like Mexican food, this is not for you. Service bad, food not good. 9pm on a Saturday. When being walked to a booth, the hostess stopped to talk to a waiter for a minute or two while we stood behind. I asked for a table instead, the first chair I pulled out was broken. The salsa was flavorless, no heat. Ordered guacomole, seemed to be just whipped avocado. No onion, no garlic, no cilantro, no lime...just bland. Asked for water 3 times before getting it, asked for hotter salsa twice. I ordered a steak burrito dinner, my friend had pork sopes. The burrito had unseasoned steak in a tortilla..... nothing else. No sauted tomato and onion, no lettuce, beans, sauce...no nothing. Just meat and a tortilla with 2 squares of some kind of white cheese melted on top. I took about 3 bites and cut the other end to look for other ingriedients. There were none. No mas! The refried beans seemed canned and the rice was ... just ok. My friend liked the sopes. I tried one and it was ok. Even when seeing my plate hardly touched, the waiter didn't ask if everything was ok. As we walked out we remembered saying "never again" the last time we were there years ago. I'll remember " never again". There are too many other good places around to waste time and money here. 60 bucks down the drain.

Our server was awesome. Idk what these negative comments are about. Service and food were excellent. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with red sauce: maybe red sauce was a bit bland but I just added the salsa to it which new was killer! The salsa they give you is amazing. Idk what ppl are talking about with the service. We almost didn't go here bc of the negative reviews! In so glad that we did! Right when we walked in there was a host who sat us right away... and our server was awesome. Yall Indiana yelpers need to chill. This is a good restaurant. You ARE WRONG.

The food was excellent. However, my wife and I are huge advocates of good customer service. In our hour long visit, we ordered 3 appetizers and 1 main course. We saw our waitress a grand total of 3 times: When she seated us, when she brought our appetizers and then our main course. She did not check to see if we needed refills (in an hourlong visit...ridiculous) The restaurant was pretty much empty...and slow, so she had no excuse. We actually thought she went on break! We will NOT be dining in at this restaurant again in the forseeable future! Update: The manager on duty at the time, Isabel, was kind enough to call within 10 minutes of us leaving our complaint. She apologized for the bad service and even comped us a couple of free drinks from the bar if we came back. That was a great way to follow up and attempt to rectify the situation Isabel! Kudos. Your response convinced me to change our rating from 1 star to 3 (because the food, even though we waited almost 40 min for the hot wings, was very tasty!) I hope that our waitress recieved a stern reprimand so that this won't happen to any other hungry customers.

Food is real good, service is not the greatest wait time is a bit long for food but over all not too bad, i wouldn't recommend the deserts, and if ur looking for a real hot sauce, ask for the "salsa verde".

They have lost my business!!! My husband walked in on a Friday evening to purchase a Togo order and they were rude! He felt "Rushed" and the manager didn't help to make situation any better, he felt overlooked. The manager felt the dining customers were more important. A manager should know how to handle a "Rush" of customers because all money is green!

Went for lunch today! With wife and son, we say there for literally 20 mins with no service! Not even a "hello I'll be with you soon" horrible service! I could see if they were busy, but there was only 4 or 5 other guests.

1st time here food and drinks were great! Sat at the bar the wait wasn't too long seeing that the bartender was also being the waitress. Had the 27oz Coco Loco margarita which is $11 but it was good. Also tried the chicken tacos very good. Def will be a place I frequent especially when it warms up because they have a patio area.

Yelp could be a useful app if the people posting the reviews weren't so critical. Had I used the app first I would have never came here. I'm glad I didn't because the food was very good in my opinion. I had the Burrito jalapeño and I thought it was fantastic. I can't understand the negative comments. People are human and make mistakes. I've been to good restaurants and had bad service but there is no reason to rate them one star. Some people on here need to get over themselves.

Excellent food, great margaritas, and lots of local craft beers. We have been here twice in two weeks. The male servers are extremely attentive; the older female does more of a stop and drop, but the bus boys made up for it. The cocktail de camarones and salsa appetizers are excellent, as are the sopes, tamales and fajitas. A nice mix of Mexican and Mexican-American food.

Myself, my fiance and a group of friends ate there last Friday. The service was mediocre at best. The waiter forgot our drink order and we had to politely remind him. I did appreciate that he took an item off our bill we did not care for (the queso dip). However, a few hours after eating there, I became very ill to my stomach. (Thankfullyl no one else in my party did, but I was the only one to order a seafood dish. ) Now, I cannot say with 100% certainty that the restaurant made me sick, but the timing of my sickness would support that hypothesis. My fiance called and asked them if they would refund my portion of the dinner ( a little over 30 dollars) and they refused. They did offer him a discount on our next visit. WHAT? I'm sorry, but even if your food didn't make me sick, your poor customer service and mediocre food would deter me. No, I didn't go to the hospital and have myself tested for food poisoning , but we weren't asking to get rich, just a refund. They could have done in the spirit of good customer service. But no. So thanks but no thanks, Jalapenos, I'm leaving you alone.

Stopped for lunch and was underwhelmed. First, nothing worse than walking up to a podium with a sign blazing "Please wait to be seated" and then standing there for 10 minutes waiting for a human being to at least acknowledge my existence. I was solo and all I wanted was to eat at the bar and watch ESPN. After getting seated service was pretty good with a young man eager to help. but then the double restaurant whammy happened. Bad service / bad food. I had a menu but the server disappeared for an extended period of time . not his fault He was trying to serve tables and the bar ...hopeless. I ordered Chicken enchiladas. The chicken was the pre-frozen cubed crap you would expect from Taco Bell. It actually might have been drier. Sauce was forgettable and the meal was horrific Take a pass.

Went with the family on a Sunday afternoon. Nice ambiance. Efficient and courteous server. Having Three Floyds beer available was a big plus, especially Zombie Dust and Gumballhead. The salsa served with the chips came in the tiniest bowls I've ever seen for salsa. Had to keep asking for more. The food was very good. Everyone liked what they got. My one daughter who studied in Mexico said the Mole was very good. I had the Burrito Jalapeno and liked it. Prices were a little higher than most Mexican eateries I have patronized but not exorbitant. Food came fairly quickly. I would return.

Food is usually pretty good. Need to season the meat more or at least offer some new choices with a little heat. Try the Rita's Tacos, Deep fried goodness. Try the Citrus Steak tacos for something a little different. Enjoy the outside patio area when the weather is good. Beware the large Margarita in the Fishbowl if you are driving. If you are the passenger... indulge.

We used to come here after they first opened up, then for no real reason took a break, so we haven't been here for years. It's still the same, great decor, food is good not great, tables and chairs are definitely showing their age. The chair I sat on was a little unsteady from being pulled across the textured floor, and the table rocked back and forth more than a bunch of grandmas in the maternity ward of a large hospital. Waiter was a little creepy, all in all ok but not a 5 star experience.

    (3)
  • Chris B.

I gave 3 stars based upon the decor and atmosphere....I had the burrito meal minus the beans ......but that could've been the reason it wasn't awe inspiring to me.... my wife had the chimichanga it was nice but nothing that says I'll be back like Schwarzenegger! Maybe we had the wrong items but I'll try them again hopefully my taste buds will be set a blaze

Visited Sunday night for a couple of beers and appetizers. After initially being greeted warmly at the bar, the service turned cold after three guests who appeared to be friends arrived. After that, we were ignored. The bartender walked past my empty beer numerous times. At one point, a "friend" customer called her a whore and she retorted that she'd been called worse by a bigger bitch. After a couple of f-bombs by the same man, she reminded him that it was a family establishment. Given that there are newer and numerous restaurants in this area, Jalapeno's really needs to step up their game in terms of service and decor. The kind of treatment we received makes me never want to patronize this establishment ever again.

This place gets 4 starts. When and if I want a margarita this is the place to go to. Now...this is NWI version of Chicago's Lalo's SO with that being said...this food to me isn't traditional Mexican food. None the less the food is decent. I haven't had a bad meal here. Service is OK. Prices are good. Location is great. I'll be back.

Great food but with a high price! The service was good and the waitress was nice but not in our face. I'm not the kinda guy who gets suckered into atmosphere but they worked hard to try and provide a true Mexican atmosphere.. Didn't help the Bears win though.

Hello, This was a mess! Myself and a friend went out on 7/24/2014 at about 8pm. We walked in and was not greeted, matter of fact no one was at the the front hotess' table; because all the hostess were in the corner looking and talking amongst themselves...never greeted. We sat down only to never be waited on, no menus, no water, no utensils, no hello..just cold stares.. We even had tons of waiters and waitress walking past us purposely turning their heads. After 40 minutes and two songs from the live band. I informed the hosted of the situation and was told that we were not serviced because we were not seated by them. We were then waiting again,...still no service, but a very indifferent young lady came to the table with chips, no salsa...slammed it on the table and walked away! We then notified the host to contact the manager....which he replied through third person...That HE WAS BUSY! We continued to wait, after some time he came out learning of the problem only to state, " well you weren't served because you were not seated...I guess that meant no service. We expressed no one would address us , which this was only our second time ever coming to this restuarant which I don't believe we were seated before. He stated we could have have found them, that they were around. He was right, they were around the corner talking to each other. The manager was defensive as he apologized...but defended poor service...We will now meet him on Face Book so that poor training or whatever the issue it can be addressed. He eventually stated, "well did you want us to take care of your?" We then chose to leave....I thought all money was green, but the hands that held the money was not the same. We will let all know how blantantly disrespectful your staff and yourself were on 7/25/14... if you care to call...

I stopped here with my husband on a trip back to the region and was reasonably satisfied. I had the Spinach and Cheese Enchiladas, which I've had before. They're pretty tasty (although a bit spicy), and a nice change from the usual cheese quesadillas I usually order when going out for Mexican. The margaritas were good, too. Service was fine.

Always a good mexican meal. I usually have Rita's tacos and they never disappoint. The margaritas are delicious as well, and not watered down like at some restaurants.

Such good food! I always seem to forget about this place. I tend to not go north on 41 for food for some reason. The family suggested this because we were going to jaks warehouse after. Decent prices. Lots of room for large groups. Great food. If you are looking for Mexican food then you should try this place.

We went to this place last Friday. We won't be going back. We got there a little before 9:30, and they sat us in what I guess is the main room? The service was slow and unpleasant. We each ordered a margarita and some food. The food was ok, I got fajitas and I'm pretty sure they are one of the hardest things to mess up in the Mexican food world, so we were ok there. Fast forward to 9:50, and this random swarmy looking guy comes over and tells us "um, no rush or anything, but in ten minutes we're clearing out all the tables, including yours, to make way for the club." Um... we had JUST gotten our food. I understand places switch like that sometimes, but I wish the hostess had given us the heads up when she was sitting us there- we would have asked to sit somewhere else. A couple minutes go by, and tables are emptying. The guys come through and take out tables, basically as soon as someone leaves. Before we know it, we're one of the few tables left...and while they didn't SAY anything, there was a line of guys across the room just basically staring at us, waiting for us to leave so they could take our table away. Even before this all started happening, they started up the fog machine. Nothing adds flavor to a meal more than some nasty artificial fog, let me tell you. To add insult to injury, the margaritas were 18 DOLLARS EACH. Granted, they were big, but warn a bitch first! They don't mention that on the menu anywhere. Peace out, we won't be back.

My good luck with Groupon continues. I was staying the night with The Sibling, who is a NW Indiana resident. We were hungry. And thirsty. Especially thirsty. Sibling said, wait a minute, i think I have a groupon or two! And she did. We first looked at Yelp to see if we even wanted to use the groupon to Jalapeno's. Your reviews, fellow Yelpers, were all over the place. We pondered. We looked at the calendar - yep, it was Sunday; most restaurants aren't slammed on Sundays. We looked at the weather report; cloudy, warm, but no rain in the forecast. Sibling said, you know, i think Jalapeno's has an outdoor patio. We decided - it would be Mexican food and drinks. Jalapeno's is located in a shopping mall area - quelle surprise, this is NW indiana. Parking is definitely not an issue here. Though the lot looked very full when we first approached, there were plenty of spots close to the front door. Jalapeno's has a diverse audience in terms of age, but not so much in terms of race. Maybe it was only during our single visit, but it was a very white clientele. No Hispanic people. In NW Indiana, and at a Mexican restaurant, that's odd. That can be a bad sign. But having a Groupon means you throw caution and your better instincts in the toilet. The restaurant was about half full. We asked if there were tables available outside, and we were promptly escorted to a two-top around a corner, which actually gave us some privacy for our conversation. We had a waitress named Naomi, who was prompt and efficient throughout our entire visit. A busboy came quickly and gave us chips and salsa, and he kept our water glasses full. Other people may have had issues with service, but we did not. The Sibling had a glass of sangria, and I ordered a laguna Margarita. This means that it was made with blue curacao. We each had the mid-size, which was as big as my head. The Sibling was driving, so she was conservative with her drinking. Me, I sucked that baby down, and even ordered a smaller, second laguna Margarita. We both liked our drinks. The Sibling and I were going vegetarian. She ordered vegetarian enchiladas with spinach, and I ordered enchiladas stuffed with cheese, covered in a green sauce. Both entrees came with refried beans and rice. We both enjoyed our meals very much, and took half of them home for the next day. Mine still tasted good Monday evening. The portions are very large. The menu is huge and kind of disorganized. I found it a little hard to read, and that was before I had dived into my margarita. I don't think Jalapeno's has outstanding food - it has satisfactory food. This is not a gourmet experience, but I don't believe it is intended to be. It is shopping-mall Mexican food, made for a white audience who has probably dulled its taste buds with ginormous alcoholic beverages before eating. If you are expecting Topolobampo in Schererville, you will be sadly disappointed. If you want to have some strong drinks, fill up with decent food, and relax away the evening, then this may be the place for you. For me, I got what i expected. That's good enough for me.

First of all, for a Friday evening the restaurant was not that busy. (It used to be years ago). I ordered the rib eye steak, which was good. My husband had tacos. Presentation was good, however the tacos were very bland.

Atmosphere ok service ok ... Shrimp enchiladas were the bomb!!! That was off the new menu, took them all day to bring it out ,we went threw 3baskets of chips... Although chainy, I can honestly say that the food and the service were good. My family walked in on a Friday afternoon for lunch during the Christmas season and were seated immediately. Sure, the decor is overkill but it is attempting to wisk you away and gives you plently to look at similar to Bennigans or Applebees. One thing though. This restaurant needs a facelift curtosey of Robert Irvine of restaurant impossible. Have you seen the menu? The menu needs to be simplified. Not more that two pages. Also, I was incredible disappointed and thrown off by the fact that it has no key! There are random highlighted dishes but no designation of vegetarian or gluten-free dishes. Add another layer of confusion by lack of organization. Help Robert Irvine Help!! Also, the music is awful! It is loud and techno-annoying! Totally kills the Mexican interior vibe! The food was good and portion sizes kept us satiated with leftovers. But I surprised to see how costly the meals are. $10-12 per person! For the revenue they get from selling meals and some decor on ebay they should be able to put together a new more streamline menu (with special dietary options highlighted in green or with a little chili pepper). All in all, I don't know if I'll be back unless my parents make me.

We had been here a while back and wrote it off. We gave it another chance because of a Groupon (they can be pretty good deals!). That was a mistake! We were totally underwhelmed. Even with the Groupon, the prices (for what the place is) are a bit insane. Mexican food from your neighborhood restaurant is not that expensive, and this place is not innovating with any new dishes, the food isn't at all mind-blowing, and you aren't paying for an incredible atmosphere... But the service was the worst part. It was not packed when we were there, but the server showed such little interest in us, and only checked on us once after the food came (and we were eating for a good 45 minute span of time, mind you). The area has too many other choices to make this one a priority.

  • Alana B.

Wow. All these negative reviews are ridiculous. Unless something changed in the past 3 or 4 months since my last visit, this place has always been great. No, the staff usually isn't out-of-their-way perky, and you shouldn't expect to find an amazing Mexican atmosphere... But the food is AH-MAZING. As long as my waiter or waitress isn't being an ass, I could care less about their role in my social experience. I'm here to DINE. And when I have my rare restaurant and calorie-laden splurges, I couldn't care less about anything other than the food. The only time I was ever disappointed in anything of theirs was when I tried their crab patties (an appetizer I made into a dinner)... Those were definitely a bust, but everything else I have had was super! The seafood enchiladas are YUMMY!!!! Probably my favorite thing there. Having been born and raised in Texas, I was very upset to leave my favorite Tex Mex restaurants behind when I moved up north. I tried a couple of local places around me, but apparently most of you yankees think MORE GREASE = Mexican, and I have been served way too many of these BLAND, greasy Mexican dishes around here. They have an awesome selection and variety outside the norm, too, which is good when you're a pescatarian like me and don't want everything stuffed with beef and chicken. So I can't give you a review of anything containing the latter two, but my experiences with their seafood entrees have been fabulous. Also, ignore the previous reviewer on the spinach dip, too. You don't skip that at all. Aside from their guacamole, which is absolutely STELLAR during avocado season, I live for this as an appetizer. It isn't the BEST spinach dip I have ever had, but it's worth a taste for the traveling spinach dip lover like myself. Their margaritas are great, though definitely not perfect. I love their variety of mixes, but I think their house is the best that I have had so far. They have a Margarita night where they are discounted, but I can't remember what night of the week it is. They often have awesome local musicians come through, too, which is great as well. It seems some of these bad reviews are commenting on their nightlife, but last time I checked this place had 'Restaurant' in its name, and nothing resembling 'club'. Get your punk asses off my Mexican Restaurant's lawn and go review something off Weed Street.

Good food, just beware if trying to use a groupon! The staff and management were unwilling to accept my groupon because 2 drink specials were purchased at my table of 5. Although enough regularly priced food was purchased, I was denied my groupon. That was too bad, but this really did ruin my experience!

One of my boiz hits me up! and asked me if I had plans for that one Friday night, I replayed and said no I'm free. He was o.k. you're partying with us, so I asked him "where we are going, what's the name of the place and the address". He replayed "I'll give you details later" "I was like hmm". It was about 10p.m when my friends and I met up at one of my other boi'z crib, to ride off to the place. So he finally tells us that we are going to party at this one place in Indiana, I was like wait! There isn't much of Nightlife in Indiana, but, it's all good. We finally arrive to the highly anticipated hot-spot! Known as Jalapeno's, aka "Wood hallows"... A couple of friends and I was like wtf! Is this place even popping? We approached the front entrance, all of my friends had been carded and most of them had paid the cover fee. I on the other hand, rushed back to one of the cars to drop off some stuff; therefore I was the last one to go in. When I was carded, I was informed by one of the bouncers that my I.D wasn't valid. To make matters worse this other bouncer tells me "Yup! And by the way your jeans are too long/sagging." I was like dude wtf! Are you freaking serious, I'm like wearing skinny ass jeans with some DC* skateboarding shoes; he replays "Nope! I'm Sorry." (They were also denying entrance to other people for stupid-ass reasons) I was like Aite! Man whatever. After the whole bogus incident, most of my friends stood in the place. A couple of them asked for their money back and went back to Chicago with me even thought they didn't have to. There are tons of great places in this town but, this one definitely blows!! Yeah I have to admit that the place looked like it was popping, but what is there to expect from people who possibly can't make it out to Chicago's Nightlife, and from a town in Northwest Indiana that is basically lacking from a Nightlife. Smh!!!...

    (1)
  • Keziah C.

Yuk, is this really supposed to be Mexican cuisine??? Are you serious? The food is definitely not a good representation of REAL, AUTHENTIC Mexican cuisine. UNACCEPTABLE! Hateeed It!!!!!

Jalapenos had a groupon so I purchased it to give the place a try. We went on a Saturday night around 5:15 and were seated right away. The waitress was very nice and always checked if we needed anything. The chips and salsa were excellent. We ordered the chicken fajita quesadillas which were hot and full of flavor. I ordered the spinach enchiladas for my dinner and it was a huge portion and delicious. I love having a doggy bag to take home. I will definitely go back to Jalapeños and try the drinks next time. Great food and fast, excellent service.

I was there over the weekend to celebrate my best friend birthday. The service sucked but the food was good. Once our lunch was served the waitress didn't check up on us. We has to ask the bus boy for extra tortillas for my fajitias. Then she brought a comp piece of cake which was nice but we weren't even done with our lunch and then had to waiver her down to order a round of margaritas. I doubt we will go back.

Good food! Great for groups, too! Got in on a Sunday evening around eight or so with 10 people. The staff was great and got us seated right away.

I'm not much of a drinker, but I think most people go here for Margarita night. If not, I'm deeply disappointed in NWI. I had the displeasure of eating here once, many moons ago, and I'm just astonished this place is still open. I got chicken tacos and it was swimming in some terrible sauce that completely ruined and overpowered the entire meal. To reuse my lowest of the low statements -- "to put it in perspective, I think I'd rather eat a vending machine taco from a gas station".

After reading the reviews, I'd thought I'd call first to make sure that they'd accept my Groupon. I specifically asked if I could use it for a party of three and was told yes. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They said I had to have a party of five. After explaining this to both the lady at the front desk as well as the manager, the said no for which I expressed my dismay, but said we'd stay. He later decided we could use it, but it came with a price. We were seated in the back corner, was given cold tortillas, and could hear the 2 young waitresses discussing how they would did not want to serve our table. I told the older waitress who served us that I could hear the others comments, but assured her that there was just a misunderstanding. Upon a nice long wait for our food, needless to say I was afraid to eat it. I left the waitress a generous tip which is common for us, but vow NEVER to eat there again. They shouldn't offer customers to buy them if they treat them so poorly when they are used. Tasteless!!

I'm changing the stars to 2 after having a mango marg on the patio. At $7, it was pricey but GOOOOOD. We shared two appetizers. Skip the spinach dip - kind of cheesy and mayo mix. But the cheese poppers were awesome. Too hot for me but really well done. Service sucked. The waitress didn't seem to care if we ordered or not and we had to beg her to show up. But sitting on the patio with a Margarita is April was worth the extra star.

Crowded, no real atmosphere that isn't pretty much Bennigan's or TGIFriday's but I can't complain about the food. A little more expensive than average but I don't mind going when I'm visiting my mother and she seems to have the itch to go. The flautas are a little too crispy for my sensitive teeth, but everything else, especially the enchiladas, are quite enjoyable for me. I'm not itching to get back, but it's certainly decent. 3.5 stars.

When this place opened up years ago, I thought they had something good going. I think that they only tried serving good dishes the first year or two. After returning years later to catch up with some old friends, I thought I was going to puke! Disgustingly horrible dish and the rice wasn't even Mexican, it was a combination of bland carribean? flavor-like rice. I can't really explain it. I have not had the interest to ever return here again.

I come here often - about every two weeks. I have gotten to know the wait staff pretty well and they are top notch. Sometimes mistakes are made, but they are minor and can be easily corrected (wrong tortilla, etc). Over the past six months the front desk staff has improved GREATLY. The front staff used to be manned by snotty girls who could care less if you were there. I complained to the manager often about this and am happy to say something has definiftely changed. Now you are greated and welcomed to the restaurant and not made to feel loike an intruder. The food is good. Is is authentic like Mexican food in Hammond or on 18th STreet in Chicago? NO its made more for guerros than mexicans. BUT it is far better than the competition down the street. Want to try something VERY Mexican I recommend the carnitas- that is a true Mexican dish most Americans have not tried. Thank you Jalepenos for fixing the front desk staff!

Not very many places to go out dancing in NW Indiana. This Jalepenos turns into a night club after restaurant hours. I haven't been here for food, just the night club. It was okay for entertainment in NW Indiana....I MUCH prefer Chicago!

I'm from the Dallas/Fort Worth area and was in town to celebrate a family event. My group of eleven went to Jalapenos on Monday, June 6 around 7pm. It was slow, we were seated immediately. As with any large group it took a while to peruse the vast menu and make a decision. The wait staff was courteous but I couldn't say they were outstanding. However each person at the table ordered a different item from the menu and each person was very satisfied. I ordered the Sonora Chicken and loved it.

This place looks like it has seen better days. I have been here about five times, and I have never been all that wowed. The food is okay, but not particularly flavorful. I was just here for lunch with a friend, and they had a "Taco Bar" set up that just scared the bejeezus out of me. It looked like it had been sitting out for quite some time. Service is okay, not great. The prices are medium-range, but I wish the quality were better. Honestly, I'd rather go to Chili's...that's how NOT authentic this place is. It's not awful. I've had worse, but I think I've given this place its last chance. If you want much better food, much cheaper prices, and you don't care about ambiance, try El Amigo a few miles away!

Wow, I'm shocked to see all of these negative reviews. I've dined here several times and the food has always been delicious, and the service above par. This isn't your average store front burrito joint, and the items on the menu reflect that. My only complaint really had nothing to do with the restaurant, but with the family at the table next to us who, during our last visit, let their kids run around the dining room like animals. It's not mom's cooking, but it's pretty darned good.

it's unfortunate that everytime i've been here it's been a strange twist of slow service, subpar food, and somebody really obnoxious within a earshot. i guess i really can't be disappointed anymore since i've been serially disappointed in the past.

I'm not a fan of this place at all. The food is less than stellar--and with all the other Mexican restaurants in the Region, why settle for anything less than delicious? It's only saving grace is the outdoor patio and live music they feature throughout the summer. Also, their margaritas make up for crappy food.

Haven't been to recently and visited about month ago. I can't believe the prices in this place! Mexican food is not supposed to be this expensive for G's sake! It was like $70 bucks for 2 adults/2kids. I'd rather get take-out from El-Amigo in Schererville for $25. Food is okay but defnitely not worth it in today's economy.

The bar area is awful, unless you enjoy overly crowded places where you can hardly move, then by all means, but it's not for me. The restaurant area is awesome though. I dined there for the first time last year and the food we had was delicious. It's Mexican food, but not really your usual, traditional kind, so if that's what you want go somewhere like "El Taco Real" or "El Ranchero" or "Burrito Mundo". This place is more geared towards wilder concoctions with a kick. Their portions are quite generous, you'll probably be needing a take home container for nice leftovers. They have good Margaritas and Pina Coladas as well.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
