Reason for 3 stars is going for lunch is terrible WOULDN'T recommend it. We had the worst experience going at lunch. The cook seemed like he was on something, he couldn't even cook chicken right or even make anything right. Everything was dry and just gross... I think I ate 3 bites out of my meal. Then he slipped and fell while cooking.....if you want a good meal go at night when the real chefs are out....5 stars for dinner time :-D

Been coming here as a kid. Not bad, high level of food quality and they really made the inside nicer than what it used to be. Still not the best I've seen but it about the only one in the area to get good meat and seafood. The soup is awesome and you have to try the house dressing for the salad. One thing to watch out for is the prices. Granted you do get a fairly decent show but some of the prices are a bit high. To be fair, you either leave stuffed or with a full doggie bag. Beware of the fried rice, never noticed but the fried rice is a $4 up charge to your meal if you choose the option. All in all, not bad, good food, good show and good sushi. A Little pricy for a family of five but a must a couple times a year. For a cheaper, quicker meal try Yeo Mongolian grill around the corner

They served me spoiled and rotten seafood. The Teppanyaki chef splashed me with hot oil!!! Will never return, how do you serve stinky fish to customers.

I haven't been here in a while, I am a huge fan of Japanese food and I eat it whenever I get the chance and in my book this place just isn't up to par. I asked for shrimp sauce to go with my meal and not only did they not have it, but my waitress had never hear of it. To me that's weird. The sushi tasted pre prepared like something that had been sitting for a while, not freshly made. It was still edible but it tasted like grocery store or airport sushi. I haven't been back and I don't expect to go back ever.

The food and staff are impeccable. A large choice of menu items. No losers on it! Really worth more than one trip. Upscale and great for special occasions. Don't miss out

Anyone from a real city that's close to an ocean who's had real sushi would tell you -- I hope! -- that this is, hands-down, the worst sushi they've ever had in their lives. Calling it "sushi" is mean to actual sushi in the same sense that calling the tomato-y cheese bread that 7-11 serves "pizza" is mean to actual pizza. I need to go out and get sushi in an actual city that's close to an ocean as soon as possible in order to wash this memory from my brain. I knew this was a terrible idea and should've never listened to my wife. Now we're just trying not to argue about it. Thanks, Northwestern Indiana!

Dirty, sticky menus laid on our dinner plates by the hostess as we were seated, not good. The food was good but there were little bugs, like fruit flies, around our table and the grill wasn't clean; this place is filthy.

Mediocre food and poor service I went here with a group of 7 - we were jammed into a space for 4-5 people so they could fill a table. One of my friends ordered sushi instead of tepanaki - both dishes were sent back due to rotten/smelly fish. The hot oil from the grill splashed on one friend and myself. The owner came over at our request and when my friend pointed out the oil on her dress, he said "this restaurant is not for you" and walked away. My tepanaki was OK - portions were large but little flavor. I would try a different Japanese restaurant next time we want tepanaki.

Hands down, worst sushi I have ever had. The entrees are disappointing as well. Felt as if we got less of a show than other tables. Server was never around and I sat without a refill for 15 minutes (even though all the other tables had left). You would think that a place this expensive would make sure their food quality is at least decent and that their servers are slightly competent.

horrible ive been there a numerous amount of times. last night the meal was prepared completely backwards . got the meat portions, vegetables, rice and ended up with our shrimp appetizers. No one wants to get their main portion of the meal before any of the rest im not sure if they were trying to do something different but it completely sucked. This is going on my list of places I will not be returning.

BOY O BOY, HOW THINGS CHANGE. This place must have been bought out by some BIG restaurant chain. What was once a nice, quiet, soft lit restaurant, is now a noisy drab looking place. They remodeled the place a few years ago. Just a plain old concrete floor made me feel like I was in my Basement. When I called the day before they said I did not need reservations. While waiting almost an hour for my table all these people were coming in for reservations. When the waitress finally came by I could hardly hear her. And then the food. The stir fry vegetables which were once so tasty were bland. The FILET tasted more like ROUND STEAK. And then there was the LOBSTER. It was like I was chewing on GUM. The grill is now for 10 people instead of 8. So you can't even get to talk to the other people at the sitting at the same grill because they are so far away. This is all typical of a big chain restaurant. Just PACK em in and let see how much money we can make. They did give you more food but the Quality just was not there. Kind of reminded me of a cheap Diner. The place was packed. 80% were probably under 35. Reminded me of myself when I was young and naive about food. If you have ever been to a Shaky's Pizza where everybody is celebrating their Birthday, that's what it was like. ALL IN ALL, not a good night out.

Good place for a special occasion. Portions are huge. It is getting a little pricey. The new addition has no character. I much prefer the House of Kobe in Merrillville. It is just very salty chicken, shrimp and steak. You are paying for the "show." Sushi isn't too bad.
(2)Samantha P.
I'm giving two stars because the food is typically awesome. However, the service and the cooks are quickly going down hill since the "expansion." Don't waste your time.
(2)Joon M.
This was my intro into Japanese cuisine. I wasn't yet ready to try sushi, but I loved ordering the Chef's Special. I looked forward to House of Kobe for birthdays & after school dances. The chefs always put on a lively show...I remember that a guy named Rueben was my favorite performer & chef. Worth checking out if you are in the area.

My husband took me here on Valentine's day and the food rocks here. Our waitress was excellent and the food was fantastic! They give you so much that everyone walks out with a doggie bag. Expensive but great for special occasions.
(5)Jill W.
House of Kobe is decent overall, but the quality just isn't as good as it used to be (10 years ago). The steak, chicken and shrimp are great as well as the soup and veggies. If you have kids, it's pricey but a perfect place for a special occasion. Something new that I'm not a fan of is that they give you too much food -- to the point that boxes are brought out almost immediately after the chef is done cooking. Also, it seems to be in a perpetual state of construction. For NWI, this is a 4 or 5 star restaurant.
(3)Jamie M.
I love this place for a treat once and a while! I love the food options and the atmosphere. You get seated at tables with groups of 8+, your meal is cooked on the table in front of you and it's always interesting. My husband doesn't like sitting with strangers, but it's never a problem. The food is great (steak, chicken, seafood, etc.) and the staff is friendly. The meals come with soup, salad and ice cream, so we never leave hungry and usually need a leftover container.
(4)Cali M.
This is an AWESOME restaurant. The food is all of high quality and the cook makes everything right in front of you to order! During the week they have great steak and chicken specials and the price just can't be beat. They come with a 2 piece shrimp appetizer, miso soup (not very traditional), salad (I recommend the ginger dressing) and vegetables that melt in your mouth. Surprisingly the lobster and scallops are very tasty for being cooked on a grill. Go here! Even if you have to drive in from Chicago it is worth it. Oooh, and get a Mai Tai, its like a little vacation for your mouth!
(5)Kim F.
The sushi here tastes great but the biggest problem is that every time I eat sushi from this location, I get sick within an hour of eating it. I eat and order the same food out at their Merrillville location and am just fine. This has happened the last 4 times I have gone to this Schererville location. That makes me wonder about how they're keeping their food. Clearly it's below health codes. The service here is always slow and the girls always act like they have no idea what they're supposed to do. It's like they're scared, perhaps not real servers but host staff? The other issue we had this evening was that while sitting in the sushi bar, we were right underneath a heating vent. The vent was pushing out hot air, but as we got closer to closing time it felt like the cut off the heat. Next thing we know there is #2 bathroom smell being pushed out through the vent right down onto us, our table and our sushi. How exactly does that happen? Do they flip a switch in the bathrooms to ventilate those into the sushi bar? Just downright disgusting. I've never had issue at the hibachi and would only go to this location for that, never again for sushi. The Merrillville location is your safest bet for all though.
(2)Sarah M.
We were seated almost right away, without a reservation. The waitress almost came too fast for our order. The chef was pleasant and the food was fresh. The prices are a little much for dinner, but you get a lot of food. I always have a big box of food for dinner the next night. We were also there pretty late, they started the cleaning process with some of their grills, a little soon, I think since there were still people eating, but good to know they take the time to clean them down each night. I'll be back again.

One of the only (might be the only) sushi places in schererville. It is a hit or miss with that place and sushi. I still always go though because I love sushi, it is basically across the street from my house (which is good if I have too much sake), and it is good a majority of the time. Wish their sushi bar was larger. The hibachi section of the restaurant is nice and you never walk away hungry that's for sure. They use tons of oil which is not something I prefer, but that's what they need to do for those hot temps. I usually go there with family for birthdays and friends for the sushi. Their cold sake is awesome!!
(3)Bekx O.
Have been going here and the place in Merrillville for years, and will never, sadly, go back. Service has been getting steadily worse. Food's still good, but plan to spend an hour and a half waiting for the hibachi chef to even look at the table. Also, NEED BETTER VENTILATION! Last time in the restaurant was in the sushi bar. 3 of us marked out our orders on the paper, the waitress took it, and that was the last we heard of our order. She came back asking if there was anything else we needed, despite the fact that our order was never prepared. We asked for the manager on duty, and he basically blew us off. Save yourself the money and hassle, and go to Hamada in Tinley Park, or BC Osaka in Merrillville.

We have came here before without incident. Not sure if it was just an off night or what, but if this turns into a regular occurrence of issues, they may be out of business. First lets start with seating. Our reservation for 8 people for 8 pm. We were seated promptly at 8pm, however it took an hour and a half and 2 complaints to a manager before we received a cook. When we did finally get a cook, he cut himself and was bleeding but still continued to cook.. Gross!! The table stopped him and had to report the blood on the food, napkins and grill, really?! I smell a health code violation?
(1)Ginny Z.
The restaurant was overbooked on New Year's Eve but they lost tons of customers. Our reservations were at 6:30 at 8 we were just being served our soup. The restaurant was so cold you could see your breath. The soup was steaming but because of the restaurant temp was actually just warm. Our whole table ended up getting up and leaving. People the the lobby left with us too. The manager said it was just fresh air coming in from the vents. We were in winter coats and could not remove them. Second bad experience...they lost us.

The sushi here is amazing.
(5)Janet J.
What a great place. The food is delicious. The table show is always entertaining. The bar is small but perfect for stopping for a quick meal on the fly with a cocktail or two. The owners make you feel immediately like family. The sushi is excellent with a pleasing presentation. I consider this one of my favorite restaurants for comfort food. Quality food and service.
(5)John T.
OK, so let me preface this by saying that the hibachi portion of this place is not bad, but the sushi house is horrid. Everyone in my party (on two occasions) has gotten sick. I hate when you order rolls a certain way and they bring them to you incorrectly. I mean lettuce in a spider roll that is already gross due to a smothering of mayo? No thanks. The hibachi portions are not that large, but the show they put on with knives is great. That is the only reason I would go here again...to watch knife tricks.
(2)Tim P.
Disappointed in this "go to" restaurant. Quality and service have gone down hill. The worst part of the 3 hour experience is that my girlfriend got food poisoning! We won't be back.
(1)John J.
Terrible sushi. It tasted acidic. Boxed up entire meal after to bites asked for the Bill and in the trash it went.
(1)David B.
Over-priced and kitchy. Kinda fun for the kids but the service staff are pretty cold. Last time we ate there, the server asked if we wanted white or fried rice with our meal (white rice is included but she made it sound like friend rice was also and included option). When we got the check, we were charged $4 for the fried rice. A customer next to me with a different server said they did the same thing to him. Pretty shady. Also, they charged me for Sriacha hot sauce. Really? Some of the kitchen staff were hanging out outside the kitchen watching everyone the whole time we were there. Pretty creepy. Summary - over-priced and over-rated. Don't waste your time and money.
(2)Dennis N.
as always-FUCKIN DELICIOUS!! SUN - THURS Chefs special $16.99, so good cant complain! and great SAKE BUZZ to go with the food
(5)Brittany M.
I honestly love this place. I cant speak for the sushi bar but the teppanyaki is great. It's a lot of good food at a reasonable price. The service has always been decent and I've never had a bad experience.
(5)Cindy F.
I had an overall bad experience here. I thought that since it's somewhat close to Chicago that it should be ok, but I was wrong. I can't speak for the cooked food, but the sushi was terrible. The spicy tuna roll wasn't at all spicy and in fact, the sauce had almost no flavor. There was lettuce, rather than the standard and much tastier avocado and cucumber, as the other part of the filling. The crunchy unagi (eel) roll wasn't crunchy and just didn't taste quite right, The seaweed wrapping came gummy. I understand that moisture will do that to seaweed, yet all the other sushi places I've been too have managed to avoid bringing me rolls where the seaweed was already fully saturated/damp and gummy from the rice's moisture. Also, the food left me with a bitter aftertaste. Perhaps it was the lettuce, but that's never happened to me before. The service and atmosphere wasn't great either, and I'm not that picky about it. When we entered, there was no one waiting to seat customers. It was several minutes before someone came back to seat the other people waiting, and I had to actually ask about the seating. As the only Asian person in the building who wasn't staff (and much of the staff isn't Asian, might I add), I don't exactly blend into the crowd and I shouldn't have been ignored. In addition, the hibachi part of the restaurant clearly wasn't full, but the other customers were left to, very loudly, wait in the front. Our waitress was nice, but clearly wasn't very familiar with the sushi menu items or the Japanese words used in the names/descriptions. Also, we mopped up some water that we spilled with napkins that she promptly brought over, but did not retrieve to throw out until after walking past our table several times. In general, the non-hibachi part of the restaurant had a slightly dingy and "sticky" feel to it. Other people from this area have told me that they like House of Kobe, so I can only hope that the cooked food and Merriville location is better, but I'm doubtful. I'm not sure what it says about this place when I've had better sushi in Storrs, CT (which is officially a rural area except for that fact that UConn is located there).

I've been eating here for years. YEARS. I remember coming here for my grandmother's birthday when I was, like, seven. And I still keep going... and going... and going. I've ordered something that isn't the Chef's Special about three times ever because the Chef's Special is just that good. This is actually what the other reviewers are talking about (for the most part) and I will really explain what it is : Small salad, best with the house ginger dressing but other dressings are offered A clear broth soup - this is NOT miso, allow me to stress that. It's glass noodles in a clear broth with scallions and mushrooms. Delicious. 2 shrimp, grilled as an appetizer Mixed grilled vegetables, including mushrooms, zucchini, bean sprouts and onions Steamed rice bowl, you can get more Steak, grilled to order (best medium rare) Chicken Scoop of ice cream (the peppermint is best; it's the kind that has little peppermint candy chips in it) for dessert This will run you about $13. Holy crap is that cheap! It's served, I believe, Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday or some such. This is one of the best (and cheapest) teppan-yaki places I've been to (the grill is called a hibachi if you were curious). The sushi is okay... nothing special, nothing bad. The decor at the Schererville location is an attempt to have the place look more like a Japanese establishment while the Merillville one - which still has tasty food! - is in an old Shakey's and kind of shows it. They could both stand a bit of a makeover at this point, though. I guess I really should try something else sometime, but the Chef's Special is just so AWESOME. The show is a little silly for me at this point but it's generally good natured. Oh, and be aware that since this is hibachi style cooking you may be seated with another party or two at your table, especially if you're a smaller party. It's the easiest way to cook for the crowds that show up and accomodate everyone - people are generally pretty polite. They also do the silly happy birthday song stuff if you're out to embarass anyone while you're getting tasty teppan-yaki. I will probably keep going here until I am physically unable to do so or they go under, whichever comes first. It'll probably be me that goes first, though.

so yeah.. this place is pretty taaaaastaaay. My girlfriend has got me hooked on Sushi. I've had it like 5 or 6 times now, and I totally love it. I probably wouldn't say this place is my favorite Sushi place, but it definately was not lacking in quality or quanity. Everything was perfectly tasty and the service was great.
(4)Christina M.
I went here a while back. The food was great and so was the show! The only problem was the food was a bit pricey, but for the amount of food you get it's not too bad. We are definitely going to go back soon!
(4)Bill W.
Always amazing. Eric and the staff always make my family feel right at home. The food is always fresh and delicious! I highly recommend House of Kobe in Schererville.

Found a maggot in my food...February of 2014
(1)Kristin K.
This is hands-down my favorite hibachi grill. Everything from the soup, salad, entree, and dessert is fabulous. The weekday specials are really good prices as well. The chefs aim to entertain and they do it well. A chef once spilled my strawberry daquiri on my khaki pants when he lost control of his utensils, but he apologized many times for it and I got the drink comped. I only hope the woman with the fur jacket next to me got a little more than that.
(5)Conni M.
Super disappointed! Have been coming here for years for the weekday "chefs special", I was ok with the huge price jump from $10.95 to $15.95 until I tasted the steak! The price went up and the quality went waaaayyy down! It was over processed, over chemically tenderized goo that could barely be called meat! That said we had the best most personable chef I've had in years. Too bad the food sucked!
(2)Roy H.
It has been quite a while since I have been here, but this is hands down the best hibachi place I have ever been to!!! EVERYTHING about it is just great - service, decor, food, etc
(5)Maggie S.
Food was great, service was awful! Granted it was busy, so we sat in the Sushi bar. My boyfriend got his dinner about 20 minutes before mine because they were backed up, so why not wait to bring them out together, and on top of that it took another 10 minutes to get silverware to eat it. Very disappointed with the service. Don't think we would go back because of it
(2)Stephanie K.
If you've had one teppanyaki-style meal at a Japanese restaurant, you've had them all. Sure, one may do something fancy-schmancy with the shrimp and another may ham-it-up with the knife tricks, but at the end of the day, you're going to eat the same food and see the same onion volcano, right? A couple years ago, I stopped ordering the traditional meal and started trying random stuff on the menu. Here's a few of my faves... - Grilled Calamari - Ginger Dressing - Ahi Tuna (sashimi)
(3)Michael B.
ROACHES!!!!!!! All I wanted to do was treat some new friends to a nice dinner at one of my (former) favorite places. We were just seated at the teppanyaki, the friendly waiter took our order, and three different roaches were crawling around behind us. ROACHES!!!!!!!!
(1)Shelli W.
I love this place. I never had been disappointing with the food. The sushi is as good as it gets. I always go home with a doggie back, but end up finishing it off later on the same night.
(5)David C.
A unique and fun restaurant. I haven't tried the sushi bar, but the main restaurant is excellent! You sit at large tables/grills and the chef cooks the food in front of you in an entertsining manner. Similar to Ron of Japan in Chicago or Benihana restaurants. Good for special events!
(4)
