I hate to give Yamato 2 stars based on the straight Japanese menu rather than the sushi and sashimi, but I found their food to be at best uninspired. Normally when I think of Japanese food, I think of perfection on a plate, more like a work of art that is to be tasted as well as seen. No such luck in this establishment despite the Zen-like decor of the restaurant, which is very un-Richmond. For starters their miso is uninspired: it's not even hot. Their idea of a salad is torn iceberg lettuce with a zingless sweet dressing, forget any ginger in it. Their salads, only the seaweed salad was interesting and well presented. Forget the avocado salad: same treatment as their regular salad described above but at $4.50, very expensive and boring. The only appetizer worth eating is the yellow tail collar, which is scrumptious but they run out by 6:30 in the evening. Then there are the hibachi dinners: the yakiniku is unlike any yakiniku I have ever had in the past, more like beef tips with veggies thrown in for good measure; the swordfish steak at $15 are two skinny over cooked slices of same. Both dishes are served with copious fried rice (WTF?). I won't waste your time by going over the horrid service at this restaurant (despite mediocre food Olive Garden at least has excellent service). Suffice it to say at my time of life and at the career stature of my dinner guests, I resent being addressed as "Hey you, guys!." Nor do I take well to "are you still workin' on that?" Whatever happened to: "Good evening, welcome to Yamato's, my name is So and So, and I aim to make your dining experience with us a great one."? What ever happened to training of service and kitchen staff? And no, I don't buy, it's good enough for Richmond. I might forgive the lapses in service if the food were great. Alas, it is not. Mediocre at best.

While I've often frequented the Yamato in Springfield, I had little experience with their Richmond counterpart location. But, when Jules suggested a night out in Richmond and a trip to Hastings, we both knew just where to go. Besides, she had a hankering for sushi and I've *long* since learned not to stand between her and a spicy tuna roll. The Richmond Yamato is located in a strip mall along US-40, tucked away behind a few eateries, beside a Kroger. Really, it's unassuming from the outside, but the interior decoration is dark, inviting, and comfortable. The service we received was solid, despite a mostly full restaurant; we were seated immediately, drinks and refills arrived quickly, and the food was quality. I've got to say, though--the portion size at the Richmond Yamato is decidedly larger than that of the one in Springfield. My plate of yakiniku and chicken was massive, providing me lunch for tomorrow. The amount of diced tuna in Jules' sushi, similarly, was significantly larger than I'd typically expect. Not complaining, though! Our food was of the same quality we'd come to expect from Yamato in Springfield. I still can't get enough of their "yum yum" sauce, despite the fact that I've dissected the recipe pretty well at home. My beef was cooked to order and the vegetables on the plate were tender and toothsome. If I have one complaint, it'd be my soup. The 'clear soup' I received was warm, but not particularly hot. It definitely could have used a higher temperature. That said, our soup was served with crispy wonton noodles, which were a delight to snack on and dunk into my broth. There aren't many other options for Japanese food in Richmond, but Yamato makes for a great choice. They're worth your time!

Since learning that Yamato is opening up another restaurant in Connersville, I've been wanting to eat here and see what we could expect. I finally talked my husband into taking our 2-year-old son for a test drive at the Richmond location. As most of the other reviews have said, the service is an issue. Our server was sweet, but a bit scatterbrained (we had to ask for soy sauce dishes and chopsticks), and the language barrier resulted in us getting sashimi rather than nigiri, and an extra order on top of that. I think this could be alleviated if they would pass out a little sheet where you could write down your sushi order (like every other place I've ever been). However, the adorable hostess made up for what anyone else was lacking. She was so cute and friendly, and thoughtfully sat us where our son could marvel over the color-changing pillars. She needs to be promoted to a server, stat. The food was good. I loved the tuna sashimi - very flavorful and great size. I ordered the sweet potato roll for our son, but he preferred the salmon sashimi over everything else. No matter - I'll tear up some deep-fried sweet potato with eel sauce. I do think it's slightly pricy for what it is. However, knowing that there's moderately good sushi about to come to our little hole-in-the-wall town, I'll be able to suck it up and fork over a few bucks every couple weeks. Or days.

Had sushi for dinner. Basic sushi roll had small portions. The speciality roll was good though. It was a Friday night so service was quite slow but I'll wait for good sushi. Seems they focus more on the hibachi and entertaining. Heard some corny birthday song twice and then Disci Inferno. If your a sushi lover, this will do. Not the best but definitely not the worst. C+ overall.

I was a little hesitant to try this place because well, sushi? In Richmond? I was pleasantly surprised! I have been twice now and both times, the sushi was excellent. Very fresh! I kept it pretty basic - rainbow roll, california roll, smoked salmon and yellowtail sushi... But some of the other special rolls on the menu sound amazing. My fiance had the chicken hibatchi dinner and it was really delicious. He is a super picky eater and he liked it a lot. The dinner portion is monstrous! The outside of this place is very misleading but the inside is beautiful. We had excellent service both times - in fact, our waitress last time checked on us a little too frequently. I have never seen this place crowded so I am a little worried it won't last. There really isn't anywhere else close by to get good sushi so check it out!

Go here at least once a week. Super yummy. Also seem to get a bento box because I can get a variety of what I like. Also sounds like people are having fun at the hibachi.

Great food. Descent prices for a hibachi. On weekends, make a reservation if you want hibachi since they only have 2 hibachi tables. Otherwise, the restaurant portion usually has open seating.

Excellent ambiance (well, minus the tv) with beautiful wood, great space partitioning. Great selection of sashimi, rolls, entrees. Inexpensive (5 bucks standard or hand rolls, $12 large rolls) but decent food. I was a bit disappointed in amount of fish in the eel rolls: was more avocado than eel. The sauces were somewhat bland; could use a bit more distinctive flavors. Terrible "salad": a bowl of iceberg is not a salad...how about something more authentic like an Asian cucumber slaw? I'd think that including miso with the order of 2 or three rolls would be cost effective, not just with entrees. Need low sodium soy sauce. Wish there was gomae on the menu :( Service was spotty: was not checked on after the food was served and was not offered any dessert menu, or to see if we wanted anything more, hot tea was not refilled. Restaurant was not overly busy during this Monday dinner hour. Decent all in all for a chain, though it is too bad this town can't or won't support independently owned restaurants.

We come in with 5 people and sit at the hibachi grill. It took about 30 minutes to get out soups and salads. Everything took a long time. One of my favorite things about the salads usually served at hibachi grills is that carrot ginger dressing. Here they just had a kinda ketchup bottle of dressing that I think was just mayonnaise. It was pretty gross. We ordered some sushi and it was pretty good, no issues there. Then the hibachi chef did the usual show and that was good too. But then they give those two different sauces for dipping ya know, well the yellow one is always my favorite. I am pretty sure it was honey mustard. It wasn't good at all. And then the rice and meat was done and on our plates so much sooner that the vegetables that had I waited for the vegetables so that I could mix them with the rice then everything would have been cold.

Pretty good sushi, so the food is a 3.5 or 4 and the prices are relatively fair (3ish), but the service is ok at best (probably a 2), which how I settled on a 3 overall. I really, seriously couldn't understand my server. I had her repeat what she said three times, nobody in my family could understand it, so we just smiled. I guess we'd go back - which is the sentiment you would expect from a 3 - mainly because there is nothing within 30 miles that has the same cuisine. Edit 04.19.14 - We went back and had a different server, and although we understood her perfectly well, she was not very good at all. She botched my order despite clear instructions, and had TERRIBLY SLOW SERVICE. Luckily, the manager was nice and fixed it, and the hibachi chef was awesome and hilarious. Prices are still a bit high, but I'm sticking with a 3 rating. Very good food, selection, hibachi chef, but usually bad service and higher prices.

Hmm, 5 reviewers in one day that have only written one Yelp review ever. I can only assume what is going on here. Sorry your feelings are hurt Yamato, but that's not the way to increase your business.

The food & service is excellent. A very welcome edition to Richmond. The exterior doesn't do it justice as it is part of a strip mall next to Kroger...the interior is nice. They serve very large portions but prices are reasonable. I've dined there a few times & am looking forward to returning.
(5)Steve H.
Been there twice and had great service both times. Food was great and habachi show was entertaining. Very happy with experience.

I hate to downgrade, but the service here is really rough. I realize they've just opened and they're working on it, but for our second visit, again multiple staff standing at host station doing I-don't-know-what. I'll expand on that later. The good: Sushi in Richmond, sushi that actually tastes really good. Fresh fish and fair prices, always a good combo. Simple rolls 3.95 - 8.95, specialty rolls 9.95 - 13.95. Favorites so far are salmon avocado (6 rolls @4.95), spicy salmon with tempura flake (6 rolls @4.95), and lobster roll (lobster tail tempura, cucumber topped w tobiko, avocado and eel sauce 10 large rolls @13.95). Located next to Kroger, no one would ever belive this used to be Cici's Pizza, the inside is beautiful, decently sized, and decorated in modern zen style, there's no other place like this in town. There is a hibachi available, but it's not multiple hibachi grills like at other places. There is one area at the back which is a large hibachi that seats several parties at once. Apparently they charge an extra 3.00 to eat at the hibachi. I think that's kinda ridiculous. They need to incorporate that 3.00 onto their menu prices, I don't think that's right. The bad: The service is a big miss / mess. There's the asian staff and the non-asian staff, neither was very helpful. There is definitely a language barrier with the asian staff, our waitress managed to completely confuse our drink order which consisted of two waters, one Sprite and one diet Pepsi. It literally had to be repeated three times, she just didn't understand. (No, I'm not being racist, I'm Filipino and grew up around a lot of accents so I'm used to that stuff!) At one point our toddler managed to knock over my other daughter's said Sprite and spill the full glass over to the side of the table, partly onto the booth and all on the floor. We all let out an audible gasp. The host stand was about ten feet in front of us, our waitress was there along with 4 other staff, they all turned around to look, they saw what happened, then turned back to what they were doing. WTF?! I flagged down non-Asian waiter and politely asked if someone could please help and explained the drink was spilled. He said he'd bring another refill. Our waitress actually came with the refill, but NO ONE bothered to mop up the entire glass of soda which was now all over the floor around our table. Um, OK, thanks for your concern. When it was time to ask for the check, that again took way too long of a time considering how many staff were standing around. We were obviously done with our meals since the waitress had quickly cleared the table, but again had to wait wait wait for the check and wait wait wait for it to come back so we could sign off on it. Urgh. In a nutshell, the food is pretty darn good, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Given what little is available in Richmond, this is a solid four stars for food. I am SO GLAD we don't have to drive so far to get our sushi fix. The service, however, is just dismal, I give that 2.5 stars. It's no fun splashing around in a puddle of soda (not to mention a safety issue). Please, Yamato, work on this because I know we'll be eating here all the time! Also note correct name is Yamato Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi and it is located on National Road East, not East Main. I've told the moderators, but it hasn't been corrected yet.

I love trying different foods and I'll admit I'm not the biggest sushi fan but last time I was here I had the Godzilla roll and loved it and the rest of the menu is great too the sword fish steak is a must.

This is a relatively new restaurant whose service was understandably rough the first few months. I'd gone a couple times when it was still very new and it was clear that they had not yet learned how to handle the volume of business they were designed for. That being said, the service has improved significantly over the last few months and it is now definitely one of my favorite restaurants around. The sushi is unarguably fantastic, though I mostly can't comment on the rest of their menu (lol). The tea is good, and if you order just the right amount of rolls, they'll bring it to you on a big wooden boat, as many sushi bars will do. I have had their hibachi once, and as a fan of hibachi, I must say it was about average. The performance was pretty good, and the food was pretty good. Overall though, not my favorite hibachi place. One complaint I do have, even if it is small, is that they offer miso soup and clear soup, but they do not offer my personal favorite, egg drop. This is somewhat unfortunate, since I love the stuff, but for the sushi... I'll learn to live without. Desserts basically consist of ice care, fries ice cream, and fried bananas. That's pretty much it, and I don't really care for any of those, but I never get dessert when I go out anyway. All in all, this restaurant is a "must-try" if you consider yourself a sushi fanatic. All the other food, I hear, is pretty great as well.

I have now been to Yamato four times- twice for take out and twice I've dined in (once for dinner and once for lunch). Unfortunately the service has not gotten any better. Wait staff still stand around seeming to be more interested in each other than their tables. There are really two problems- one lack of general restaurant waitstaff knowledge, and two a lack of Japanese cuisine knowledge (eg knowing when to bring little dishes for soy sauce and understanding how to describe the food). As some reviewers have suggested, this really has nothing to do with ethnicity of staff, it's a problem with the whole wait staff. Maybe they could benefit from bringing in someone Japanese to explain the food and customs to them because I don't think there is one Japanese person working there. I was really impressed by the value of the lunch menu, it's cheap and HUGE. Try the bento box for the most variety. I also highly suggest getting white rice instead of friend rice. The sushi is done well, though I still wish there was more flavor vinegar flavor to the rice (since the "su" in sushi stands for vinegar). The sashimi appetizer is nice, but I'm not sure what the white fish that is partially cooked is. The seaweed salad is also done well, just ignore the maraschino cherry on top. The price for sushi here, I think, is very reasonable. It's sushi in Richmond, so I'll take it. If you've lived in Japan don't go in thinking this will be authentic. You wouldn't go to a McDonalds in Japan and expect it to be the same as you would in the states.

It said yes for deliverer but actually they only do carry out. Also their phone service was bad. Have been to Yamato before, most sushi don't taste fresh and also it feels fried on the out side, tasted oily.

I've had the "pleasure" of the Yamato experience probably nearly 2 dozen times. Overall, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised and satisfied enough to rate it favorably. I am in LOVE with the yakiniku and hibachi veggies. I keep trying to branch out but I can't seem to get over my excitement for this dish. The chicken and shrimp are good as well. I also love the fried rice, which I avoid like an 1980s fashion fad in other places. You can actually taste all of the ingredients, and it's fantastically yummy. I also love the salad dressing. Though it's not the dressing one would traditionally find at an Americanized Japanese place, it's a nice balance of expectations from both sides of the cultural line. When I dine in, I also always order unagi and California rolls (not traditional, I know, but the flavor combination is too delish to snub!) The unagi is fantastic. The spring rolls are good, the tempura is good (I even eat the sweet potato!), and the seaweed salad is good. The teriyaki is good, sweet and not too salty. The calamari meets general expectations of average fried squid as an appetizer. The soups, however, are bland. My beloved miso soup, which I was so excited for when this place opened, has fallen flat on its uninteresting, disappointing face. (I will say, however, that it is MUCH better eaten in than as take out.) The sushi lunch is delightful, as are all the bento boxes, and the maki combo lunch is very satisfying. Over all, in all my experiences with Yamato, the greatest edible disappointment has been the soup, and I still eat that. The downside is indeed service. Service dining in is hit or miss. Even for the duration of a single visit there seems to be no continuity or consistency. And it hardly seems to matter which of the many staff members is the one "helping" you; you always find yourself searching for them because you need a refill or something else. I can't say that anyone seems terrible eager to assit customer, nor incredibly knowledgeable about the food and Overall, the impression we're left with is that the staff is unprofessional, uninterested and simply waiting until their shift is over so they can go home and ponder why their tips are so low. (I jest. I have no idea how the staff makes out here, I only know that I tip based on service and here...well... ... ...)Having said that, I would like to note that I have noticed that there has been a DRAMATIC improvement on service since they've opened. I will, of course, update this after a few more dine in visits. We order out lunch from Yamato every Friday at work, (awaiting my order as I type!) and there are 5 of us, so that has certainly broadened my experiences with the menu. I've had FAR more experience with them through their take out than dine in, and again, the food saves the day. Service with take out is just as hit or miss as it is dining in. There have been times that we didn't get all of our sauces and that leads to disaster, especially when all 5 people have some sort of sushi and there is only ONE soy sauce. (Luckily, I keep condiments here to save the day.) They also can't seem to get the soup sides straight when we order,(there are two soups- clear and miso) but honestly, no one here really cares. This isn't just sushi in Richmond; this is actually good sushi in Richmond. This place has me doing a happy dance on a weekly basis. As an aside, I really wish they had a website with an updated menu and lunch specials.

My friends ordered takeout for us last night. I didn't realize it was going to be from here. I avoided the sushi but was hungry, so ate the soup and Crab Rangoon. I did not get diarrhea, but everyone who ate fish did. I got the phone calls this morning.

The place is unrecognizable when you consider the (nasty) business that had been in the space previously. There are three distinct serving areas: the sushi bar, the hibachi grill, and the general seating area. The decor would not seem out of place in a larger city, which is nice. I ordered an tuna sashimi and a dragon roll, two of my favorites. Miranda, one of the greeters was able to intelligently address my concerns regarding sashimi-grade fish in the mid-west. She asked a manager (?) where the fish came from for me (from a company in Dayton). Noticing that I was still dubious, she walked me to the sushi bar so I could see the flesh on display. I decided to risk it as the fish looked firm and the sushi bar was crowded. The menu has many of the normal things you would expect to see in a "Japanese Steakhouse", but additions like sashimi make me guardedly happy. This might take over as the "date place" in town, which means poor Gallo's might want to start improving soon! Okay, I have now eaten there three times. Twice for dinner (take out and then eat-in), and once for lunch. Dinner service was horribly slow each time, but still quicker than driving to a major city to get similar fare. I ate lunch once (from their lunch menu) and had the bento box with the tempura shrimp. This was not a good choice on my part as this was really, really oily, and the batter was far too thick. I will not be ordering a tempura dish again anytime soon, but I do plan to go back for sushi, sashmi, and other (non-fried) fare. The lunch service was quite a bit quicker than my previous two dinner experiences. If you are in a hurry, then don't bother coming here. If you get impatient with servers who are not well trained (some are great, others not), then you may want to avoid dinner. If you have an hour to sit and enjoy your meal, then I recommend Yamato.

I've never had sushi until I came to this place. At first I did not like it but the other good was delicious. I came back and tried it again and the sushi I had the second time was delicious. Not sure why this place is getting so many negative reviews. The food and service gave been great every time I go here.
(5)Tre R.
Try the sweet potato roll!
(5)Scott A.
Service slow, but I'm giving them a pass since they are new. Sushi, good not great, bit it's Richmond so I'm not gonna complain.
(3)Joshua G.
I was really excited about this place but like all the rest of the reviews I was disappointed. bad service, bad management, okay food, and the sushi does not taste fresh at all. if you want better sushi I would go to the one in connersville just thirty minutes away. I will give it a another shot and try the hibachi grill, and see if I come away impressed the second time.
