Indeed, the site of a 'pastry shop' in charming downtown Richmond, IN is a must-stop, even if you don't *need* said sweeties! Service was friendly and helpful. We got a host of Hallowe'en cookies (the gravestone cookies there even had a clever nod to the popular 'Hocus Pocus' movie!). Expertly decorated with royal icing, food of the gods. Some of the icebox cookies weren't quite as good and the ones we got tasted many days old. I'm sure fresh they are divine. Not sure if they use margarine instead of butter- maybe that's the mistake. Easily fixed! I hope this bakery stays around for a long time. Can't wait to try the cinnamon bread we brought home.

I'm not often in Indiana, but every few years when I drive through, I stop here to get some "thumbprint cookies". They are so good!! I hear they have other things too, but I never get anything different. haha

I've had nary a crumb from Joy-Ann, but if their customer service is any indication of the quality of their pastries and such, I doubt I'll be very impressed if that time ever comes. First visit: picked up a cupcake order for a work function. When I stopped in around noon (on a Wednesday, I think), there were a couple other customers in the shop. I told the woman behind the counter what I needed; I got an eye roll and a lovely response of "You're going to have to hang on" as she retreated to the back. She didn't make me wait very long and they didn't appear busy, so I'm not sure what her deal was. Second attempt: I wanted to order a small (two-person) cake for my dad's birthday. I called around 3:30 or so on a Thursday. The woman who answered told me it was going to be "a minute" and asked if she could put me on hold. Sure, I said. Twenty five minutes later, I gave up. I guess the novelty of Joy-Ann's glorious re-opening hasn't worn off yet and they're still getting used to the traffic, but seriously. Hire some more people or something.

We ordered cookies for a work function. They are really delicious. The staff are friendly, but lacking a bit of professionalism. One woman was eating a hamburger (she had put it down but was still chewing) when she took my order of an extra cookie to go. The cookies are super yummy, and it definitely has the mom and pop vibe going.

Sometimes you just need a cookie. I'm so glad that Joy Ann's is back open. When I heard about their oven exploding it was a sad day. So glad they got back on their feet in a relatively short amount of time. My office regularly orders donuts from here, and we are always more than satisfied. For $10 you can get almost 2 dozen donuts. My wife is a big fan of the the thumbprint cookies. And seeing a whole case full of brightly colored smiley face cookies when you walk in will brighten anyone's day.

It's all about the thumbprint cookies, I kid you not! Came to the grand re-opening this past week. They had a tantalizing array of decorated sugar cookies, regular cookies, thumbprint cookies, cupcakes, cakes and donuts. The decorated cookies were so beautifully done, Halloween themed this time of year. The taste was just average, though. Also tried a snickerdoodle, a peanut butter cookie and a shortbread cookie, again, just average and dry and crumbly. The thumbprints were my favorite and were the girls favorite as well. Not as pretty, but taste out of this world. It was a kind of sugary, shortbreadish type with the perfect texture and bits of almond and a dollop of frosting. Perfection with a cup of coffee. Have yet to try the cakes, cupcakes and donuts. Not sure that's gonna happen, though, with the thumbprint obsession. They sell by the pound and next time I will not make the "half pound" mistake, gonna go for the pound (or two!) UPDATE: Tried a white cupcake with white icing as suggested by a previous review. ICK. Not at all impressed. The driest, crumbliest cupcake I have ever tasted. The frosting was ok, but the cake part was pretty awful. I don't consider myself a connoisseur baker by any stretch of the imagination but I have made cupcakes from mix which were far moister and tastier than the cupcakes here. Never buying one again! Stick with the thumbprints!

Donuts= 4 stars Cookies= 4 stars Service=3 stars I don't know.. maybe I'm used to the little trendy Southern California bakeries we have here. I will update next time I make a trip out to Richmond.

BEST cupcake and cake icing, EVER! But that's not all, their donut holes are amazing, thumbprint cookies are memory makers, and the huge Sesame Street character faced cookies make ever kid feel special! Joy Ann's was a part of my childhood and is also a part of my adulthood. Yumm!

How can anyone not give this bakery 5 stars? They make the most amazing frosting on the planet!!! The white cupcakes with white frosting are just to die for!

I love the Joy Ann Cake Shop! The gentleman who owns the shop is such a kind and wonderful man and his team of bakers and counter help are all great! The donuts are great, but the cookies and cakes are heaven! Tyler, you missed out! Not boring at all. I buy 150 lbs of Thumbprint cookies every Christmas and package them up for my clients in Detroit and they love them! I get people asking for them year round and buy intermittent batches for special events and clients. They smiley face cookies are a hoot and yum as well as the great frosting on the cakes and cookies! Ginger M. is right. It's sure heaven! If you hit Richmond, make sure to hit Joy Ann!!!

A very nice bakery, located in the western part of the Main St. business strip! It's located directly across the street from the Elder-Beerman Department Store, too(very easy landmark to spot if you're trying to find where Joy-Ann is, b/c of E-B's very noticibly bland concrete exterior). I'm very glad I discovered this place over the weekend, since I thought the people working here are real cool and nice, and will usually give you a sample of whatever you're curious to try! They even have a rack of pastries where all pastries in it are 3 for $1, which I thought was really cool(and sorta similar to how Flourish Bakery in Chicago, IL has a rack of pastries that are 1/2 off after 5pm). I forgot to ask if this was one of those afternoon-only deals or what, but I still thought that was great. They also have cake horns that have whipped cream in them, and sorta look like long johns that you'd find at any sorta donut shop, but way better than those type of pastries you'd find at a place like say, Dunkin' Donuts. A warning too: this bakery is not open on Sundays, and on many holidays(as short weekend hours tend to be the rule of many downtown area businesses for this city), so make sure you carefully plan your trip here during a Mon.-Sat. daytime. It's also open from about the midmorning till 5:30pm each day.

the doughnuts get 10 stars! Everything else looked pretty boring. Maybe I shouldn't judge because I didn't try anything else... Anyway, don't sit at the bench outside to eat your doughnuts, unless you like bees.
