This is SUCH a shame but if you are looking for quick Chinese in Portage, I urge you to keep driving right on by First Wok. Ordering over the phone without a menu went surprisingly well. Food was ready upon pickup and actually tasted pretty good. However, leftovers the next day went SO wrong when what I thought might have been a sliver of pork bone WASN'T. Let's just say that judging from the size of this winged bugger -- it lived long and ate well. Sure it could be a fluke. But, really, do you want to take the chance?

PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!!! I came here and ordered boneless pork with chicken fried rice and an eggroll. The pork was completely awful. Dry and rubbery old meat reheated is what it was. The chicken fried rice was plain and had no flavor. The eggroll was nothing but cabbage and was fried in the fish oil vat because it tasted like fish. I tried to get my wife to try some and she spit it out. And I paid almost 10 bucks for it. Do not waste your money here. Avoid at all costs! Trust me you'll be glad you did.

If your looking for out of the box, out of the freezer Chinese and you just really don't feel like going to the grocery and cooking it for yourself, why not order from here? Don't get me wrong the food wasn't terrible-- for what it is. But, are there no good Chinese food restaurants in Portage? I was expecting REAL sweet-n-sour sauce, not some sauce from a bag! The plain white rice was fine... hehe. You guys need a make over--change to fresher, hand made foods, and if you have to raise the price--people will still come if the food is 'quality'!

I went in to pick up lunch before work a few days ago to find myself stuck behind 4 ladies who had never been to a Chinese Restaurant, or at least it appeared that way. One made a joke about me thinking I'd get in and out quickly, but didn't know I'd be stuck behind them. After what seemed like forever for them to order, the guy behind the counter took my order. I tossed a tip in the tip jar and stood to the side so another customer behind me could order. My food came super fast and when it was handed to me the guy behind the counter said, "sorry for the wait". The ladies looked surprised that my food came before there food did. Now, onto the food. The egg roll was awesome and the rest of my lunch was really good, too. I can't believe I waited so long to try this place. I'll be stopping in again too pick up lunch and dinner.

This place is okay, went here because I was hungry while driving home from Chicago. I had the orange chicken and fried rice. The rice just looked like a dirty yellow brown color but tasted okay, still couldn't bring myself to eat more than a few bite because of the look. The orange chicken was nothing special either, it didn't taste fresh and I should have known better when I saw the cook grab a portion of fried chicken from a huge bowl that did not look like they make sure to keep it with in time temp control standards. I gave them 2 stars because of the surprisingly hot cashier.

I go to this place only when jade garden is closed. The general Tso's chicken is edible, but definitely not the best. The egg rolls I won't order again.

There is no pretension about this place, that's for sure. The dining area looks like a crappy employee break room. The food? I think that it is quite good. When in for pickup, I enjoy watching them make everything fresh, in full (side) view. My favorites include the shrimp lo mien and crab Rangoon. The delivery service is very, very good. Prompt, accurate & accommodating. I live in between cities.. Portage phone number and Chesterton address. To most restaurants east and west, it may as well be Siberia. But First Wok makes the trip every time. The guy that usually delivers (I think he drives a Subaru?) is very nice. Lastly, I'm closing in on triple digit visits... So I just do not understand all of the bad reviews posted... The place is good enough to consider opening a Second Wok.

This place is delicious! it's close to my place. They have great fast service. You can watch them make the food right there when you order it.

Never had a bad meal at this place. The food is great and the price is just right. You get a lot of food and it's always fresh!

I just gave this place about its forth chance and it is still terrible. I just got three shrimp egg-rolls and they were cabbage rolls. The shrimp egg-rolls were about 95% cabbage and two or three tiny little shrimp. Hey if you have to compromise quality that bad to make ends meet then just work at the mill and work for the man. Avoid totally Panda even blows this place out of the water.

Chinese food from a can. Jade Garden is right down the road. Panda Express is way better too!

Liked this place a lot...service was blazing fast! We are in town from California and found this place to be totally acceptable...kept it safe-Fried Rice, sweet and sour Chicken, and Low Mein. No complaints what so ever! Can't really eat there, because it's small...I do feel bad for these guys however, because Panda Express is on it's way, but if your looking for some seriously fast, CHINESE food go here.

Ordered from this spot twice. First time wasn't that great and the second time was no good either. Figured I'd give them a second chance but the food is just bland and VERY greasy. Beef and broccoli I got was OK but the fried rice and egg roll were just disgusting. I'd rather go to the frozen aisle or just not eating at all before I eat from this place again!

We've been eating here since we've moved out here to Portage almost 3 years ago. Great food, quick service, and friendly staff... Why not keep coming back?! My girlfriend is a vegetarian, and the staff has been more than accommodating making her custom dishes for her dietary needs. I would definitely suggest this place to others.

I came here on my lunch break once and ordered the chicken curry. I have to say it didn't taste bad, but wasn't on par with the chicken curry that I had at other places. They did prepare my food in a timely fashion and the service was really good, but I thought the food itself was totally average. I work in portage and there aren't a ton of restaurants around so I will probably come back again.

Food's not bad, I would eat it again but nothing special. The fried rice is just strange and really dull. It appears to be white rice fried in soy sauce? It did it's job, no real complaints minus the fried rice.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
