Better than average Mexican restaurant. Seems a bit rundown inside, especially when they bring broken plates out to serve you with. But what they lack in atmosphere, they make up with their food. Although since atmosphere is part of the dining experience, I do have to knock off a star.

Horrible, its been the longest wait for lunch with 4 hungry kids in tow. I can't believe the service is especially bad . Food is ok, not a single person had a welcoming smile. We had ask for water a few times before they brought some n the table. Not going again!!

This is the best Mexican food in Portage, IN. I have been 5-7 times and have never had a bad meal. I have ordered off the regular menu and the specials and each one has been quite delicious. Sometimes the service can be slow when there are a lot of people and sometimes there's a wait for a table because for whatever reason, people love to camp out here after they finish eating their food. In short, I'd give five stars if it wasn't such a crapshoot on how long it would take to get your food.

The first time we went here, said I wouldn't go back. Service was terrible, and all the food was prepared wrong. We decided to give it another shot and I'm glad we did. The service was good and the food was great. The Cheese Steak Tacos are my favorite, and they serve Victoria, which is my favorite Mexican Beer. This place is nice and close to home, so it's good to be able to stop in for a quick meal.

The best Spanish Rice I've ever had at a Mexican Restaurant!! This is how homemade Mexican food actually tastes like. I had the "tres compadres" I was every satisfied with everything except the refried beans... The staff was extremely nice and attentive so it made up for it! :-) I will definitely be going back.

I went back recently and was pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing. I am no longer searching for a Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere is casual. There is a nice patio for outdoor dinning, which I hope to convince my husband we should on. The service is still not that great. After we ordered our food we never saw the waiter again. I had to flag someone down to get more chips and salsa.

We have had quite a change of heart about this place. We were members of their rewards card program. Since the last time we went, they cancelled the program and started a new one. Instead of taking our points from the old program and moving them to the new program, they simply cancelled our points. How long until they cancel the new program and get rid of those obligations to customers? We will not be back.

They really know customer service here!!! Always feel welcome whether 2 or 10 in our group. The cheese dip is so good. Margaritas and housemade sangria are always a good choice. Keep it up!!!

I recently was in town and craved Mexican food. Decided to go to El Cantarito and was not disappointed. Ordered the beef brochetas and they were great. Also got chips and salsa with a side of Guacamole and was just as good if not better than my favorite restaurant in L.A. La Huasteca. To top it off had a Strawberry Margarita that was perfect!! Great place, great food and awesome service!!!

This place was okay. I ordered the torta ahogada and it was not ahogada, which was confusing. I was disappointed because I like when the bread gets really soft from soaking in the sauce and the bread that I was served was very crusty. I had to pour the sauce on myself and was only given a small amount (more specifically, a little plastic cup) so my torta was never drowning in sauce. The sauce, however, was tasty and I could tell it was homemade. The chunks of pork on the sandwich were huge and made for two meals. My boyfriend ordered some tacos a la carte and was disappointed with everything he ordered. I think we will go back and try some other things on the menu. I noticed they had alambres on the menu, which makes me hopeful.

Not bad but nothing special. Rather bland and ordinary. Beans were dry, entree was dry. I spread sour cream on top and poured the entire salsa container on top of that to add a little flavor.

This place isn't expensive, per se, it's just higher priced than other Mexican restaurants I'm used to. The salsa had almost a cocktail sauce flavor and the chips were stale. It made me sad, because I really wanted to like the experience. I was also surprised there were no combination dinners, like most places have. Overall...meh.

Service is very poor. Tried it 3 times and they just seat you and leave. Need more waitresses less waiters.

The shrimp cocktail is out of this world, I always take 2 home for the next day. Food is good and the beer is cold. Happy, Happy, Happy......

I had an aunt that couldn't cook. I am sure Mexican encounter that too. I think I know where that aunt is cooking these days. Poor! For TexMex in the area it goes to the bottom of the list.

1 Star Servie / 3 Star Food - If you have a long time to wait for drinks and food, go here, but only expect med grade Tex-Mex. I am not returning.

I have not had a bad meal here yet!!! Service is great and our waitress is always super friendly. As an added bonus they have a meal reward program.

This place must have improved greatly since the earlier posts below that aren't good because I have been here twice in the past few months and everything was great! The food was really delicious, service was great, and I am totally obsessed with the vegetarian quesadilla. And the rice I ate there was anything but bland.

I love El Cantarito. If I don't get over here every couple weeks, I get cranky. Their rice and beans aren't amazing but the food (and guacamole) is. I always get the burritos banderitas but I've never had anything less than great food here. The service is ok... Not out of this world but friendly and reasonably fast.

A quick look at the menu and right away you know that this new restaurant did not make an effort to prepare for you great tasting, quality, authentic Mexican cuisine. The staff and owners are quite lovely and accommodating but please don't be fooled! I realized that only the Margarita I ordered and the music was decent enough here. Yes, the refried beans totally taste straight out of a can. The rice is bland. I ordered the carne asada and I recieved two of the thinnest slices of skirt steak ever!! I could almost see right through them! This place is just as terrible as the bright orange restaurant on Ridge Road called El Pueblo.

Ok, this is going to be a long review, but trust me I'm going to save you some money. First, I should have known better to leave when my wife and kids walked in and the place was empty during supper time. The chips and salsa were ok I guess if you like cold salsa and chips. My son's chicken fingers and fries tasted like fish because they probably fried it in the fish vat. I ordered the carne asada. The arracherra the gave me tasted old and it was tough like something the 3 Stooges would serve you. The rice was plain and undercooked. Uncle Ben makes better rice. The beans were so dry my 7 month old didn't even want them. My wife had the fried quesadillas. She wanted to throw up on the way home. When we did get home, we all had the squirts. My butt is still burning as I type this review. Enough about the food, let's talk about our waiter. He gave us that " what do you want" type of service. He was more interested in his soccer game on TV. What kind of restaurant owner allows his help to serve garbage like that and expect people to pay and come back??If that was my restaurant I would fire my wait staff and hire competent wait staff that will feed and treat my customer's right. They gave us microwaved old food. Stay away from this restaurant, your body will thank you. Have a pleasant day.

Okay the food really did suck guys!! The beans were the ones you get from a can in the hispanic section of the grocery store that are ALREADY refried...I knew it was going to be bad when he brought my plate and said.."careful it's hot"...meaning MY PLATE itself...I took one look at the mash of refried beans sitting there and thought...oh they microwaved them..yup..dry as the desserts in Nevada sweetheart! HATED them...I can't stand it when mexican restaurants take the cheap way out ...what did the price of dried pinto beans skyrocket or something! You can't afford the .25 cents a lb and boil the suckers yourself in the morning...it's so sad when restaurants don't even try to make decent food anymore..the rice was VERY PLAIN,..it had no flavor...the texture was correct..but again it was plain...I left both the sides. They took the cheap route yet again when they served my quesadillas rellenas with the mini WHITE corn tortillas...which excuse me SUCK BIGTIME...I hate those little suckers...there is a reason they give you like 125 in a bag for a $1 at the supermarket people!! Can't you use Milagro corn tortillas for your dinner...I mean..I am paying $7.50 for the plate not including drinks...SO SAD!! I actually felt NAUTIOUS on the way home... NEVER AGAIN...I REPEAT NEVER AGAIN...do not waste your time folks...SAVE YOUR MONEY!!

Really don't know where these people are eating and the fact that El Amigo has a better rating is just crazy. The El Pastor tacos, tortas and enchiladas are awesome. Margaritas are really good as well.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
