Excellent sushi filled with fresh enticing flavors!!!! The Aloha, Caterpillar, and Monkey Roll were to die for. If you are I the mood for sushi and are in the Noblesville area this place is a must!

This is a neat, family-owned sushi/Asian restaurant located in the culinary wasteland of suburban Noblesville. The service is extremely friendly and the food very authentic and delicious. I had the shoyu ramen noodle soup (daily special) and was extremely satisfied. I received a big bowl of ramen noodles in a savory broth for under $8. Heaven.

It's pains me to lower my rating on this place because the food is so good, but our service last night was horrendous. Our waitress took my drink for a refill, never brought it back. Our toddlers meal came out in about 15 minutes (that part is good), but then we waited about another 10-15 minutes to get or soup and salad (about 30 minutes from time of order). Come on! It's all pre-made. Ladle the soup and grab the salad out of the fridge. Our toddler was done eating, our soup and salad were long gone and we waited, and we waited, and we waited for our sushi. There wasn't but 6-7 other tables when we ordered. We asked our waitress where it was and I suspect at that moment she actually put our order in. I finally gave up and took our now tantruming toddler to the car while my wife waited for our sushi to go. About 15 minutes after that, she came out. We ate the sushi in the car out of a Styrofoam box... Not the kind of $70 meal we've come to expect.

This is one of 2 Asian restaurants in Noblesville that are my "go-to" places. The sushi is excellent, but I give the edge on that to Sushiyama. Kobayashi has a better overall menu and atmosphere though. I have never been disappointed after a meal at Kobayashi.

Tried this place today with a friend, and the lunch deal was spot on at $8.95 for 2 roll selections, salad and soup. I could have swam in the hot and sour soup. Deliciously warm on a cold day. The spicy salmon roll was nice, and the shrimp tempura roll did not disappoint. I would love to see a $10.95 lunch option with some of their more advanced rolls available for selection.

Birthday party complete :) while it did take over an hour for us to get our sushi and some had ordered regular menu items and got them before the sushi made it to the table, the food was great! We enjoyed our time with each other and honestly I noticed it was taking a long time but didn't mind. Some had commented on the decor, I liked it, not a big deal. Others had commented on the friendliness of the service, I thought it was just fine. Our server didn't seem to have a lot of experience with larger parties but that was ok, she was really nice and we had great time. We will definitely be back, sushi was delicious!

Great sushi! Friendly staff and quick service. A couple of times we've called to place an order when they were open but nobody answered.

I ate here today after searching nearby locations for a gluten free/vegan meal. The reviews I found were pretty good, so I couldn't pass this place up. I'm SO glad I found this place. The waitress was very knowledgeable on special diet recommendations. I felt very comfortable placing my order, where as normally, trying a new restaurant is highly stressful. The sushi rolls were amazing!! We ordered a California roll, (for my boyfriend, which the waitress instructed them to place on a different platter) the veggie roll and the cucumber/avocado roll and a salad. They even had gluten free soy sauce.. What?!! Super exciting!! Bottom line: amazing service, amazing food, and fairly priced! Will definitely be back again!!

Best salmon sashimi we've ever had. My husband never orders sashimi, but after I encouraged him to try mine, he went nuts over how fresh it was and immediately ordered another. It had absolutely no fishiness to it, and melted like butter in our mouths. The sushi chef said the tuna was just as good and fresh, but we were already too full to eat any more (I'd saved the salmon for "dessert" after we shared a salad and three rolls). The rolls were delicious and beautifully presented; my only criticism is that all three were sitting in some kind of light sauce that tasted very good at first, but had a sweetness to it that became overpowering after a while, so that I didn't care to finish the rolls and left the last few pieces to my husband. Overall, we loved the place. The food quality and presentation were excellent, the waitstaff was polite and attentive, the chefs clearly felt passion and pride for their work, and the restaurant owner stopped by at the end of our meal to make sure we were pleased with our experience.

Wow did this place exceed expectations. It's in a weird location, the building used to be a BBQ place, and it doesn't look like much from the outside (or inside really), but the sushi was reaaaally good. We got the Kobayashi Roll, Atomic Shrimp Roll, Double Roll, and Aloha Roll. All of them were delicious, unique, and richly flavored. We're big sushi fans, and this has become our new go-to place.

Food was good. The Service was a bit slow and they were not busy all. However, our server was very nice and sweet. We had a coupon for $10 off $40 or more, which is the only reason we went to the restaurant. Now it did exclude alcohol and taxes but our food bill was 39.15 with alcohol it was $52. Literally they made us spend .85 in order to use the coupon. Now I understand there are guidelines and restrictions but for .85 they just lost two potential regular customers. So if you are planning to go and use a coupon better be sure you follow the conditions or they will not allow you to use the coupon. We won't go back based on this ridiculous experience with the coupon.

Went back again a few days ago, this time we tried the sushi. Solid, fresh, tasty and pretty ... if a little uninspired. Ok, this place is not exactly H2O sushi, but it's a lot closer to home and more than adequate. They still need to improve the music, keep it more in theme. Next time, will try the pad thai noodles.

  • Tim S.

Everything we had was delicious. Some of the best hot and sour soup I've had. The sesame chicken was excellent. They grill it and it doesn't have that super thick sauce that Chinese restaurants use. The veggies in the dish were all fresh. The sushi was very tasty. Try the aloha and atomic roll

We had a craving for sushi and decided to try Kobayashi. I wasn't optimistic in trying a new sushi restaurant, but was pleasantly surprised. We had several types of sushi and they were all great. The staff was attentive. The only let down was the mayo-esque dressing on the salad. But we won't let that deter us from coming back!

Ordered takeout about a month ago here. Pretty good food. Menu has great selection. It's a bit pricier than going to your typical Chinese carry-out but the ingredients make up for that.

Overall: A pleasant experience. I can tell that it used to be a Dick's Bodacious Barbecue (I remember it being there). But the owner has made solid attempt to make it feel more Japanese. I had an assortment of sushi rolls. They were good. Although it was sometimes hard to differentiate between them (as some of them tasted almost identical). My companion had steak, but unfortunately did not care for it too much. It was somewhat under cooked and tasted rubbery. The staff was very friendly and the food came promptly.

We tried this place last night because it's 3 minutes from our house and we're excited to have something close by that isn't a chain. This is probably more like 3.5 stars, but I rounded up out of optimism and to balance out the 1-star reviewer below who didn't actually go to the restaurant. Overall: a bit rough around the edges experience-wise, but pretty decent food and good sushi. About the experience...the atmosphere is a bit lacking: you can tell this place used to be a steak joint, with the big dark grain wood and leather booths, large timber posts, and corrugated metal ceiling. But I could deal with that if they get rid of the "muzak" that was blaring during our meal. Not only was it lounge muzak of the first order, it had commercials sometimes. Seriously, pay a little for some music appropriate to your culture and *without commercials*. The menus were really cool though, with a bamboo-looking cover that felt substantial. Now to the food...I ordered the Panang Curry with chicken (kind of my yardstick dish for asian fusion/thai places -- I eat it everywhere) along with a tuna roll, and my wife ordered a complete sushi dinner. The Panang was less of a stew/soup than I'm used to and was served on a plate rather than a bowl, but it had more vegetables and had a great thick coconut milk sauce (some places get skimpy on the coconut). It lacked a bit of zest though; it needed a bit more punch. Still, I'd repeat and just ask them to punch up the spice a bit. The presentation of my wife's sushi dinner was impressive: it came on a giant wooden boat. We'd never seen anything like it. Her dinner included a combination of nigiri and rolls for $18, and along with the salad and soup it came with she couldn't finish it all. All the sushi was quite good. The staff was friendly and helpful and expressed their appreciation for us coming to try their new restaurant. Overall, if they can fix the music, punch up the dishes that are supposed to be spicy, and maybe adjust the decor a bit -- all things that can be fixed relatively easily -- they've got a decent thing going at Kobayashi. We'll be going again; I hope they stick around since they're so close to our house.

Well, after a long delayed-ridden flight to get to Indy for work in March, my co-worker and I wanted sushi. But wait, we are in the middle of nowhere. Thank you yelp app for finding this place. They had great sushi and sashimi. Headed back to Tipton at the end of the month and will frequent this place.

Sub-par sushi in a day and age when I think you have to be very good to survive. Atmosphere was also a bit lacking (appeared to be an old, converted fast food place) that had many of the remnants of the previous tenant. Did not open for lunch until noon on Saturday - very odd. Service was average.

  • Marilyn C.

Been looking for good sushi on the north side and this is it! Had the tiger roll and snow roll (picture) and it was perfection. The atmosphere is not so good but the food and service made up for it. Also have to mention my wine glass was clean:). We will be going back.

Got take out for Christmas Eve. Had the Teriyaki Chicken, Panang Curry (tofu) and Beef Fried rice. The Teriyaki had very good flavor, but the chicken was a little dry. The Panang Curry had the wonderful, spicy coconut flavor of the dish. The Beef Fried Rice was good as well, nothing too special, but good flavors. Portion sizes were good. They labeled all of the to go cartons, so, no guessing on what is what. The restaurant had a good atmosphere (though they were playing smooth jazz over the speakers...). Did not have a chance to try any of the sushi, but good menu selection. Saw the chefs preparing some for other customers as I waited and enjoyed watching their art. I would definitely go back. I think they have a fighting chance of sticking around. They have only been open for 2.5wks. It is nice to have a choice in sushi/asian in Noblesville. Sushiyama has been my go to for sushi and Asian Grill for non sushi dishes.

We visited Kobayashi on a recent trip to Indiana. We were in Noblesville and looking for something close by, tasty and affordable. We pulled up Kobayashi on Yelp and thought we'd give it a try. It was Friday afternoon and the parking lot looked pretty full but we were seated immediately upon arrival. The restaurant doesn't look like a typical steakhouse or BBQ place as mentioned in other reviews nor did I ever notice the music. I personally found the ambiance very inviting. There was a sushi bar to sit at, as well as, table and booth seating. My girlfriend had never had sushi but I told her she should try it. I ordered the Kobayashi Roll and Snow Roll, since I'm a tuna fan. They were both out of this world delicious and really hit the spot. My girlfriend had the Basil chicken stir-fry which was delicious, as well, with the perfect amount of kick. She tried some of my sushi and loved it. In fact, we came back the next day at lunch for more. This time we sat at the sushi bar and both of us ordered sushi. I can't wait till I go back up to Indiana to visit my future in-laws again for another visit to Kobayashi!

What a hidden gem! My family eats here at least once a month for lunch. They have bento box and sushi lunch specials that will blow your mind. The bento box comes with soup, salad, tempura veggies, two pieces of sushi, rice, and the main entree! Such a steal. The service is extremely fast and friendly, so if you haven't been here yet, you must check it out.

One of my favorites, Kobayashi is outstanding sushi at a great price! The Shrimp Tempura sushi is to die for, and the California Roll has just the right combination of flavors. There are also more adventurous oferings for those who want to get into eel and octopus, but I didn't have the nerve to try. The salad is reminscent of hibachi joints around town, but with a creamier dressing that is just as tasty but with a different feel to it. Kobayashi also has great atmosphere and did a great job transforming the old Dick's Boadacious BBQ into an Asian paradise. If you live in Noblesvil, you should be frequenting this place, and if you don't, be sure you visit when you're in the area!

Love this place!! To start, we had the coconut Thai soup, with shrimp, which was chock full of big shrimp and veggies. The large bowl was enough fill up our little bowls more than twice so we thought it was a pretty good value. My darling wife had the house salad that was also yummy... The dressing was slightly sweet, and we later found out that it is made with fruit. The main course was Kobayashi Roll (tuna, avocado) and an exceptional Dragon Roll (eel, cucumber, and crabmeat). These were absolutely delicious. It's only our second time here, but I want to come back soon... maybe tomorrow! They have better prices for lunch. The waitress was attentive, friendly and accurate, too. On a Tuesday night, they had a fairly steady flow of customers. Definitely try this place if you like sushi...we were very pleased. Had a coupon for dinner which helped our pocketbook. Enjoyment when the kiddo was away at camp.

A hidden gem that you must try. The atmosphere is intimate and nicely decorated. I've had several different types of sushi, and they're all fantastic. The potstickers are delicious, as well. They have other choices besides sushi, and prices are very reasonable. The staff are also very friendly. An all around great sushi experience that I will continue to come back to.

Love this place! It's my go-to sushi restaurant. Great service, staff is very friendly, excellent food quality all for a competitive price. The place doesn't look like much from the outside and the inside isn't anything special, but you will be happy with the food!

This is truly the best hot and sour soup I have ever had! Cozy little Asian restaurant completely lives up to being a sushi bar and an Asian Kitchen. Usually a skeptic when it comes to restaurants with different types of Asian food, this restaurant really does it all well. My friend ordered the General Tao Bento(after watching the netflix documentary on "Finding General Tsao," which came with two pieces of California rolls, tempura(2 sweet potato and onion), rice, and a salad with ginger dressing which came with a choice of soup. I ordered the sushi lunch special with a spicy tuna roll and a shrimp tempura roll which also came with a choice of soup and a ginger salad. The shrimp tempura in the roll was still hot and crunchy and the roll we perfectly rolled, not too tight, but not too loose. Service was impeccable and it was the first time at a all-Asian restaurant where I was compelled to write before we left the restaurant. This place is definitely a must try and a must be on the list as a great neighborhood restaurant.

Just went here for a bite to eat after an afternoon in Noblesville! I'm not a sushi person but my companions are and they got a sushi boat. They liked it real well, and was good sushi but not the absolute best they've ever had. I had the chicken udon stir fry.. It was delicious! I love thick udon noodles and the sauce was great. My 1 1/2 year old loved it too. Service could've been friendlier but oh well, not like they were mean or in a bad mood. Just a thought! Overall I live about 40 minutes away and wouldn't drive to specifically come here but would definitely stop by when in the area. Yum!

Favorite sushi in Noblesville. Service is quick. They have great soy paper rolls and vegan/vegetarian choices. The lunch specials are great too so suggest going for lunch if you're looking for a deal. Will definitely go back :)

The soups are simply amazing- Thai coconut chicken soup is generously loaded with fresh veggies simmered to perfection and generous portions of chicken. A meal in itself. I love the pot of tea given to the table when ordering. Our sushi has also been excellent and our dishes generously loaded with veggies cooked to perfection and great cuts of seafood or chicken. What stands out from Kobayashi is the quality and freshness of each plate. They also have The Pink Lady, that classic 40's cocktails inspired by our WWII interaction with Japan with a modern twist, a full line of Sake in varying price ranges, Japanese beers as well as many other beers and wines. Don't let the exterior of this place and odd location dissuade you. Great service, upgraded interior, full sushi bar, excellent customer service. Prices are exceptionally reasonable. One of my favorite date night places to go.

We went at 5 on a Friday and it was clearly before the rush because it was filling up pretty quickly as we left. The booth was clean and seating was quick. The sushi, however. Nope. First, there was something on our plate that neither of us ordered, and so we picked it up and looked at it. It seems that they made some prettyish kind of plate decoration out of a dead crustacean and some noodles. Ok, my bad. But bleeecchhh. I got some of it on my fingers. And I couldn't get the taste off of them. The potstickers were nothing to write home about. Pretty sure they came from Sam's Club. Got the Kobayashi Roll, because we like to try the house roll all of the time and because we like spicy tuna. The tuna was sort of brown grey. The spicy salmon roll was Marsh quality. The sweet shrimp. If I have food poisoning, I am pretty certain what it will be from. The shrimp was slimy, and it wasn't just some kind of sauce. It was absolutely not fresh. Gummy and slimy. If you actually like sushi, real sushi, do yourself a favor and keep driving. Normally, I would have given the place another try if I didn't love the tastes, but the raw fish roll and the gross shrimp are going to be quite enough to keep me away.

First of all when I went in to pick up my order the hostess who I was getting my to-go order from was way less than inviting. She barely said two words to me. When she handed me my change she didn't say anything at all... nothing. Not even "Have a good day."... I ordered 2 avocado rolls, which I thought sounded pretty self-explanatory. When I got home I opened the box and the "avocado rolls" had cucumber in them as well, which makes them kind of sweet. I tried a few bites and hated it. I called back and asked if I had ordered the wrong thing, and nope. Their "avocado" rolls come with cucumber in them. I guess it would have been nice to know. I've had avocado rolls at many different places and not once has it ever come with anything besides avocado in it. Also, their avocado rolls have WAY more cucumber in them than they do avocado.... it's basically a cucumber roll with a tiny bit of avocado. Complete waste of $8 and I will definitely not be returning. That was a first an last experience for me. If you ask me Bento Cafe on 116th street in Fishers is much better.

Okay I have been here a couple of times. The sushi is good but not great. The service is efficient but well I thought it could be a little better. And it's pricey I just don't think for what it cost for the sushi and experience it's quite worth it so it's just really a so-so place.

Had lunch here for the first time. The quality of the food is phenomenal. It's true when they say you get what you pay for. I can't recommend this place enough. It's a must try and you'll be hooked. The sushi is top notch. Even the soups are very good. We'll be back again and again.

  • DeAnna P.

The food was moderate quality and the prices were pretty reasonable. I would like to go back when I can try the sushi. I had chicken teriyaki and crab Rangoon, which probably did not showcase the chef's skills as much as the rolls would have. The service was stellar. I am a huge drinker (of water) and our server was always right there with refills. The ambiance here was very nice. It felt cozy and authentic.

Placed an order for carryout and was notified of a 40 minute wait before pick-up. My fiancé and I showed up about 50 minutes later, 10 minutes over the estimated wait time with the food not yet prepared, which was fine as we had time to spare. We were told it would be about 5-10 more minutes. We paid for our meal. 30 minutes later it was not ready. There were guests that were seated during our wait time that received their food prior to us. We waited for an hour for a carryout order (1 hour 50 min total). The food is wonderful, the service however, awful!! We tried to flag down the hostess however she was to busy to acknowledge our existence.

Stopped in for lunch the other day at Kobayashi. We wanted to try it, as we have been attempting to hit a lot of the Asian/other international restaurants in the area, and it's close to home. There weren't very many people in there, but it was Sunday and it was fairly early for lunchtime. Also on Sunday you cannot order the lunch menu, if I understand correctly. I myself am not necessarily a fan of sushi, which seems to be the main thing here. However, they have "Asian kitchen" options as well, which are not strictly Japanese but rather sort of pan-Asian. (I do not really have a problem with this as Asian Grill, also in Noblesville, is one of my favorite restaurants.) My dad ordered sushi and he thought it was really good. I tried it, but as I said I'm not really into raw stuff. I ordered one of the two Ramen dishes on the menu (I cannot tell you which. I asked the waitress the difference between the two types of Ramen and she answered in a confusing way...no offense to her, she was kind and helpful, but she was hard to understand.) and was certainly not disappointed. In fact, it was delicious. It truly blows the 25 cent Ramen packs from the grocery out of the water when you have the real stuff. The broth was delectable. The meat and noodles were very good and they absorbed the flavor of the broth well. Also in the bowl came a few vegetables. One of them may have been bamboo...I am not sure. The thing I didn't eat out of the bowl was a boiled egg...my dad got to have that. Overall I'd say I need to go here again with my family and order a lot of different appetizers, because all of them sound really good. We had the pot stickers. They were good, especially with the sauce that came with them.

Great food and staff. The best hot and sour soup I've ever had. They are always changing their menu and coming up with new sushi rolls. I've been there four times now and will definitely be going back again.

I was so-so about sushi until I noticed this place opening up a couple years ago and said, "what's this, sushi?" We went in and met the owners, Lisa and Jet. It's hard for me to write an unbiased review now, because since that day, we have eaten here a number of times, and Lisa and Jet have become friends of ours. I'm now a big fan of sushi - good sushi. We still eat here regularly - once every week or two. The service has really improved in that time and gotten more professional. The fresh flowers on the table are a really nice touch. The food is just as good as it was when they started, if not better. (Like I said, my tastes have changed, so it's hard to judge.) And I don't even have to ask them anymore about the shrimp issue I have - they are really careful about it anyway, and let me know ahead if something is not going to be safe for me to eat. Last time we ate here - last Sunday (I'm catching up on my reviews tonight!), I had the broccoli beef bento box. So good. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

My children ages 8 & 1 shared the kids sweet & sour chicken meal and both of them were up all night vomiting. This was the only food that both had all day & they woke up fine the next day so I know it had to be food poisoning. This is my second visit to the restaurant and overall it wasn't a bad experience the other 4 people in our party had sushi and everything tasted fine and none of us were ill. If it wasn't for the fact that my children were VERY ILL from the food I would have recommended this place, however if their chicken was bad this makes me very concerned about the rest of the food quality.

I was delightfully surprised to discover that sushi has come to Noblesville. The variety and presentation is extraordinarily appealing. Great artistic care was taken by Mike, the sushi chef. The hospitality and warmth by all staff members was comforting considering the reason for my return to Noblesville. I would recommend sampling everything the restaurant has to offer. If you do not eat sushi, the Japanese ramen with pork slices and hard-cooked egg (soft center) was one of the best broths I have ever tasted. Thumbs up!

Kobayashi is the place for sushi in Noblesville. While the building may not be all that appealing, what's inside is definitely worth a visit. The sushi rolls are consistently made to perfection and the staff members are always very courteous and attentive. Whether you choose to dine-in or carry-out, Kobayashi is absolutely worth your time and money. Highly recommended!

  • Craig M.

Went to Kobayashi because it was close, I was craving sushi, and I had not eaten at Kobayashi before. I have to admit I was very dissatisfied with what I had. I've had sushi in several places around Indy and around the country and I have had only one other experience that I wasn't impressed. To some it up my experience, if you find grocery store sushi to be suitable to eat, then you'll be fine with the quality of the sushi at Kobayashi. But for the money, I'd rather travel a little further for a quality product.

So I was skeptical of this place at first. Sushi in Indy has been OK at best. I have to say this place blew me away! I have had sushi all over the world to include japan and this place did not disappoint. Some of the best sushi I have had in the states (minus Hawaii). The non sushi dishes were fairly decent as well. Try the peanut curry with chicken and reward your belly, lol. I sat at the bar and was amazed at the deft hands of the sushi preparation. Masterful cuts made amazingly thin avocado slices. Not huge chunks but bite sized pieces were presented in a lovely display. This is a must eat.

  • Catie M.

Best service I've ever had in a restaurant. I usually get the broccoli and tofu bento box (I hope they still have it. Gave not been in a while due to school.)If you ever order over the phone and they can't understand you due to connection, they will still verify your order to make sure it is right. They treat me like family every time I am in. If only I could have taken them to college with me....

  • Minda C.

what stood out for us was how terrible the water tasted that night so that we couldn't have anything to drink until after we left the restaurant and got water from the gas station across the parking lot. So, no, we didn't linger to appreciate whatever food we ordered.

  • Joshua M.

So I came back again, and yes decided to write another review. This time I had the baked Salmon roll and it was something different and delightful. The seared Salmon adds a different flavor and compliments the variety of sauces that are used in the roll. Try it!
