Greek Cuisine
Greek food is a fine melody of the finest pressed olive oil, fresh fermented bread, colorful vegetables, juicy meat, sea food all cooked in spices and fresh rosemary. The people from Greek were great scholars who aimed to excel in everything they do. The results are quite visible in their food as they are the inventors of olive oil which is beneficial to health. Greeks also made different type of wines from the best quality of grapes fermented in controlled environment.
Today, you can find hundreds of restaurants offering authentic Greek food or popularly termed as Mediterranean cuisine in New York city alone. People wait in line to taste the exotic Greek dishes like saganaki, taramasalata, souvlaki, loukoumades, spanakopita, moussaka, and many more. One thing which most people like about these authentic Greek dishes is abundant use of lemon juice, olive oil, fresh rosemary and sea salt. A smart mix of few ingredients can virtually take you on the pebble streets of beautiful city of Greece.
For those who don't have time to enjoy fine dining should try tasting the famous souvlaki with pita which is type of meat dish, also a trademark Greek fast food. For those who are vegetarian, or vegan can try different versions of Greek Salad. So, if you wish to enjoy a hearty yet healthy meal that tastes divine then try dining at the best Greek restaurant in your city. Greek cuisine not only tastes good but also help maintain your body in a natural way through healthy diet.

This is our absolute favorite gyros place ever. They have a bbq gyros sandwich that is so amazing I crave it quite often and try to convince my hubby to eat here every time we're in the neighborhood. The hot dogs, fries, and regular gyros sandwiches are also delicious. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. You can't go wrong with anything you order from here. Watch out, they're closed on Sundays (which is super sad because we tend to be back in Munster on a lot of Sundays).

My favorite gyro anywhere! This place is a hole in the wall that hasn't updated their decor for probably 30 years since I've been coming here, but their food is terribly addictive. They give you so much meat on your gyro that I suggest getting the gyro plate and ordering an extra pita to make 2. Also, the pizza pocket is ridiculously good albeit ridiculously greasy!
(5)Bill U.
Best gyros I've ever had hands down. The owners that work there are the best and always very friendly. I've been going there for over 25 years now and the place has not changed a bit. Keep it that way because it works.
(5)Jean N.
We went to Munster Gyros on a Friday night, and were greeted as soon as we walked in. The place looked clean. We ordered gyros with feta and extra sauce, and some baklava. It were so delicious! The pita was soft and fluffy, lots of meat, and great flavor. The extra sauce really made it. The baklava was sweet and flaky. We found the staff friendly, as they said goodbye as well. Would recommend. We'll definitely go back.

Whenever I am in The Region, it is essential to get a gyro here. The sauté preparation of both the gyro meat and the pitas give each bite the right amount of rotisserie drippings and crispiness.
(5)Laurence H.
Hungry for a gyro and it's two minutes from closing on a Saturday night and the owner waved me in, asked what I wanted and I have to say (having grown up in the Calumet Region) this was the BEST gyro ever... fresh, tasty, the fries were hot n not mushy. A great first experience.
(5)Stacey E.
It would be a good gyros outside of Chicagoland. Too many other options to waste your time or money here. The fries were dry. The meat was dry and lacked flavor (comparably) . Don't get me wrong. I ate it, it tasted like a gyro there are just too many better options in the area to waste time here.
(2)Billy H.
Simply the best gyros! Others are arguably as good - maybe? But, none are better! Meat is sliced as thin as gyros come and the sauce is perfect. The only place even close to this quality gyro is Rosie's in Oak Lawn. Gyros King In Downers Grove is also good, but still a distant 3rd for me. I stopped trying to find comparable gyros because they always fall short!
(5)David F.
I've been going here since 7th Grade (don't know why it took so long) and it is what's great about "Region" food. The gyros sandwich is excellent, and so is the tzatziki sauce. The portions on the gyros are always generous. I had friends that were devotees of the 2 hotdog special or the burgers, and when I need to change things up it's the Italian beef or sausage (or beef and sausage combo!). The staff has been here as long as I can remember, and the food has been consistently good over that time. Having moved away, this is one of my first stops when back in the area. I'm sure every town or neighborhood in the Chicagoland area has their own gyros joint, but Munster Gyros is MY gyros joint and beats any place else I've eaten at across the country.
(5)Cher C.
Best tasting gyros in the region. They men working there are kind creepy though..
(5)Greg D.
Just had the gyros and a pop. My son had the burger meal. Everything was ok. They dont have any ketchup or napkins in any of the booths. We had to ask for them both. I thought that was strange. The guy taking the order reminds you of the soup nazi from Sienfeld. Start putting ketchup and napkins in the bag or booth. If they do this, I will give a higher rating.
(2)Ronald D.
Looking for a good Gyro in San Diego is like looking for a Gay man in Iran, they just don't exist. It is obviously some sort of conspiracy among the Greeks in San Diego, or are there any real Greeks in San Diego at all? I am worried it might be the latter. It is a scary proposition, but one I intend to look into further. I see the Cronos international and Grecian Delight posters on their restaurant windows, the ones with the most gorgeous woman ever holding the Holy Gyro, but I sense they are hiding something. They are hiding a decent Gyro. If there are real Greeks in SD I intend to find them through investigative eating. Untill then, I will have to wait for family reunions, holidays, and special occasions to return to my birthland and enjoy what is rightfully mine.

Munster Gyros is one of the best places to eat in Munster. I've been going there since I was a kid and never had a bad meal there. The gyros are without question the best in the area, and the ribs are amazing. Prices are cheap considering the quality of the food, and the staff is very friendly. Don't miss out on this place.
(5)Byron E.
Great gyros and good Italian Beef.
(5)B J.
I've had a lot of gyros in a lot of places and nowhere is ever quite as good as a munster gyros. If I dont come back here each time I return home to the region, I feel as though the trip has been a waste.
(5)Kylie B.
the only gyros that can compare to these are at Oakland Gyros up in Milwaukee..... these things are huge....enuff meat for 2 sandwiches....loaded with onions and the zatziki sauce *spell check please* is awesome, house made.....great greek rotisserie chicken, basted with olive oil and lemon.....the fried chicken is good too, but the peices more the size of a cornish game hen than an actual chicken.......ribs not too bad either, but not something i would order again....good greek salad....... italian beef? well you do get alot on it....but pretty dry....giardinera not in sight..... you have to ask them over an over to get them to dip it......the rest of the menu mostly the same avg stuff you get at any greek fast food place around....oh but the deep fried burrito is a guilty pleasure :-) ..... about 6 tables inside seat 4 ...2 others seat 2 ....no drive-thru service......and if you dine in....right across the street is Munster Donuts for a great dessert .... support local independent buisneses......
(3)Jeff P.
The gyros and beef sandwiches here are unreal. Munster Gyros is excellent, and totally worth checking out--especially if you're not a Munster native. The building is small and pretty unremarkable, but the food more than makes up for simple atmosphere. You won't walk away hungry or dissatisfied.
(5)Karl O.
Best gyros in Chicagoland. And, thus, the world.
(5)Julie M.
Normally I would give this five stars, but I have 2 major gripes that prevented a five star rating. First, the last time I was here must have been Johns day off because the usual customer friendly face was replaced by some crabby old man behind the counter who wasn't the least bit welcoming and fairly reminiscent of the Seinfield soup Nazi. I got no welcome, no greeting, only a stone faced stare and mere nods of confirmation as I placed my order and paid. After our transaction, there was no 'thank you' or 'have a nice day' he simply turned around and continued whatever he was doing before I obviously interrupted him. The only attention he paid me was to periodically turn and glare (and I mean glare) at my five year old daughter, with something that can only be described as a look of contempt from the minute we walked in to the minute we left with our to go order. Now I've seen obnoxious kids in public places and possibly had the same look of irritation when people I don't know fail to control their children in public, but trust me this was not one of those times. My daughters only offense seemed to be that she had brought in an ice cream cone she sat and quietly finished while we waited for our food. Second, and this will always stick out in my memory, the last time I dined in house (which was several years ago) I ordered a meal. After waiting at the window for our food, my party and I took a booth and started to eat. It wasn't until we were there for about 5 minutes that a man from behind the counter approached the table. He said 'I'm very sorry for the inconvenience, but I made a mistake and that coleslaw does not come with your meal....' the coleslaw he was referring to was the contence of a 2 oz paper solo cup. Dumbstruck, I handed over the tiny cup and watched the embarrassed man walk back into the kitchen with it (he was obviously forced to do this by someone higher up than himself because he looked as if he would die of embarrassment any second). Being in the food service industry, I can only pray that he did not serve said coleslaw to another person after being on my plate for a full 5 minutes at my table. For all he knew I had already eaten out of it, sneezed on it, or licked it for that matter. I honestly can not fathom the motivation in confiscating the 5 cent portion from my half consumed plate. Although this happened years ago, it has truly always tainted my memory and made me wonder what other questionable acts take place in the kitchen. Still best gyro in town, but you can bet the next time I see the soup Nazi behind the counter, i won't be staying to place an order...and I always pass on the coleslaw now.

It's tough to review places back in the 'ole hometown of Munster, Indiana because there is basically only one of everything (one car wash, one Catholic church, one donut place). Thus, ratings aren't all that useful because if you want a delicious gyro or a heart-clogging hotdog, Munster Gyros is the no-brainer place to go. There aren't four other street stands that only deserve 2 or 3 stars which you're comparing to this place. Whatever. They make great (grease) food. If your desired meal involves meat + heat, you will undoubtedly find something(s) on their menu to fill you up.

I grew up around Munster, and grew to love Munster Gyros. I never had better, but eventually moved away and had to settle for the ones in Central IL. It's strange - after time, I more or less convinced myself that Munster Gyros really *wasn't* that great, and the ones downstate were pretty much just as good. The gyros couldn't really be THAT good, could they? Well, in clear violation of my diet, I finally grabbed Munster Gyros again tonight. I shouldn't have - I'll need to eat nothing but salad tomorrow - but damn. Wow. It was worth it. I'm a basic gyro guy. I like the meat, I like the pita, and I like feta cheese. I know it's crazy, but I skip the sauce and the veggies. I like 'em plain. I went ahead and ordered my favorite - the Gyro Plate and a drink. Just like I remembered, I had enough meat and feta to fill, probably, 3 pitas. It was insane; the plate was almost overflowing with delicious-looking meat, cut straight from the spool. I dug in with a fork and - for lack of a better term - swooned. No, really, my eyes rolled up in my head like I was Rachael Ray or something and I just went, "...wow." Yeah. The gyros were somehow even better than I remembered. I'm ruined on gyros, frankly. I just can't settle for the Central Illinois gyros again, at least not soon, and it's probably just as well. They're bad for me, after all. About my only gripe is that this is probably the last remaining place in the country that doesn't give free refills on soda. This would normally drop a star off the rating, but since I can't give a six-star rating anyway, I guess five will have to work!
(5)Kim F.
I've been going to this place for years now. The best thing on the menu is the gyros platter. It's enough meat to feed me for three meals. Great meat, feta and tzatziki sauce all for a great price. I've tried gyros from all the other so-called gyros shops in the area and can't find anyone that compares.
(5)Jackie P.
Laid back diner with quite the selection. You can choose from same hives , hot dogs, salads. To gyros. We stopped specifically for the gyros. You can order a regular or the large gyro with a side dish. Very good gyros! I'm going to go out on a limb and say not terribly healthy for you- with all that sauce and huge chunks of cheese! I didn't care, they were damn good! If you're in the mood for Gyros head here.
(4)Jim G.
Munster Gyros is a solid option when you're in the mood for a classic Greek-owned Chicago food joint. Pizza puffs, gyros, ribs are all exactly what you'd expect to find, and that can be satisfying. Gyros with feta is good. Everything I've had there has been decent. Like anything supremely unhealthy, it usually tastes great but leaves you going "Oh, man, maybe that wasn't the best idea" when you're driving home.
(3)Kay M.
Munster Gyros has been serving gyros plates and Greek chicken in Munster for at least 25 years. Its your basic gyros joint with a variety of dogs, sandwiches pizza puff and what-not also available. We have always gone for the gyros or chicken so I can't speak too much about the rest. 25 years ago a gyros plate from Munster Gyros had a ridiculously generous serving of meat, and fries along with the onions, tomato, sauce and feta cheese. With inflation the plate shrunk over the years but it is still sufficient. They should offer a "retro sized gyros plate" and put a big price tag on it. The old timers would definitely pay it just to relive the memories of those days!
(4)Shannon N.
Decent food but unfriendly service (at least to new customers) and no tap water available - had to buy $1.30 bottle of water! Gryos was fine - could've used more tzatziki. I just was really disappointed by the rude service and being forced to buy water for my toddler!
(2)Katie M.
This place is such a gem... I have tried gyros from EVERYWHERE, and I always come back here! The ingredients are fresh and you can watch the food being made in front of you. Also great prices. If you're in the area, make sure you stop by!
(5)Mark M.
Love everything about this place. Bbq gyros, beef and sausage combo, chicken, hot dog special. Everything is great. A must to place.
(5)daniel m.
Good food. But real cheap asses. No refills and if u want water u have to buy a overpriced bottle. Loosen up the purse strings guys. This behavior is sure to keep people from coming in more often, just for the point of it.
(3)Ed H.
I have been coming here for over twenty years and my meal has always been perfect. The gyros are the best I have ever had...no one else is even close to making them as good. For those of you in chicagoland that think you know what a gyro Is go to any greektown spot in the chi or just the next town over to panos. For those of you who know what a gyro is there's only one place, this one.
(5)J J.
They don't have glasses of water. You must buy a bottle of water. obviously for us that drink water, this was aggravating. It's a fast food place and you have to buy water for $1.40. The gyros is the basic meat on a spit. No different than any other place. The sauce was a little watery, so it didn't have much flavor to determine if it was good. My wife got the chicken. It came with a roll grilled and cole slaw. The chicken was moist and good. Since the gyros sandwich is like every other place I don't see the need to give it a high rating. While the chicken was great, it is the only thing that stood out. So, if your ordering just chicken: 4 stars. The rest, 2 stars.
(2)Gregory W.
Everytime I am visiting my home town I always stop here. They never disappoint me the gyros I had was great and also try beef and sausage combo is also great I definitely will be back this great food
(5)Brandie M.
Usually this place is excellent and i am not one who tends to complain but today i picked up 2 gyro plates, one for my bf and one for myself. We now both have food poision. Needless to say we will not be returning back to this establishment.
(1)Erika Chloe A.
I found this place on yelp when searching for Greek food in my area and I must say that I'm glad that I found it. I ordered the Greek chicken with feta cheese and French fries. The chicken was cooked perfectly and it was delicious. The fries were made fresh to order. I will definitely be coming back here in the future.
(5)Kelly B.
10 years ago, I would have given this place 5 stars. However, over the years the food and the service have both declined significantly. It's still a decent gyro for Northwest Indiana but if you really want the best gyro the region has to offer, head to Zantes in Hammond.
(3)Blaine B.
Munster Gyros has always been a fantastic place to grab an authentic and delicious gyro. The facility has remained the same for as long as I can remember, but is always kept tidy and clean. Their gyros have not changed in 20 years and that is absolutely fantastic! I recommend that you should visit this place if you crave a tasty gyro.
(5)Shawn R.
Got the Gyros plate, tons of food, enough for two. Everything is made fresh to order. All the food items are very good!
(5)Eric D.
I grew up in Calumet City and absolutely loved Pano's Gyros. When I moved back from Cali, where Gyro places don't exist or you'd need to settle for gross frozen Gyro meat, I went on a week long Gyro binge. At one point I didn't feel like driving all the way to cal city and heard that this place had the best Gyro in town so I gave it a try. Absolutely fantastic!!! Every bit as good as Panos but without the drive! Only thing is that I wish they were open late night (doesn't get any better than a Gyro at 1 am) and I wish they had a drive thru.
(5)M B.
Best gyros in Munster and a Munster institution. This is a must visit if you are an out of towner.
(5)Roy H.
Best gyros in the region. Hands down. If you grew up in the area or know anyone from the region ask them..they will probably agree. I honestly dont remember the last time I went here..probably when I was in high school. Didnt come back much during college and then moved away...well this Christmas I had an extra day and needed lunch. Munster Gyros was the first thing that came to mind. So glad I went. This place has a pretty typical Chicago/midwest style lunch dive feel to it. Retro fast food booths and tables. Old school menu signs. Perfect. They have all the Chicago staples on the menu..hot dogs, italian beef, and polish sausage. All pretty good..but cmon we all know the real reason why you are going to go here - GYROS. I go for the regular gyro combo with everything on it - tomatoes, onions, and that awesome tzatziki sauce. Come on a tasty pita with a side of fries and a drink. For about $6.50...great deal and alot of food. My friend got the BBQ gyro and LOVES it. I have yet to try it because I love the regular one so much. Maybe next time. The staff is very nice too..what more could you want? I cant wait to come back next time I am in town.
(5)Jason R.
If you've ever been to other places that serve gyros and you just laugh at the thought of ordering one, you've been to Munster Gyros. If you are ever out at a restaurant and you see someone eating a gyro and you feel sorry for them, you have been to Munster Gyros. If you are ever on vacation and have a taste for a gyro, but suddenly feel as if you would be cheating on your wife, you have been to Munster Gyros.
(5)Sam H.
My sister-in-law lives in Munster and Chicago. She was letting us stay at her place in downtown Chicago and was driving in to see us. She called and asked if we wanted gyros from Munster gyro. It's been a while since we've had a gyro from here and it is still great. Even after sitting in a car for 45 minutes, when I bit into the meaty gyro sandwich I smiled with a tzatziki mustache. The gyros are some of the best around. I love it!!
(4)Colin S.
5 star gyro but 2 star food. So go there and have a gyro but don't start exploring the menu. I came here and had one of the worst burgers of my life. I could only get two bites down. This place has been here forever and has a great following.
(3)Barbara V.
Place resembles a fast food restaurant. Ordered a gyro platter (with fries). The pita was the best I've had. It as soft and freshly made. The lamb was good but not outstanding. The portion was substantial as I couldn't finish my meal. Service was good and efficient, but I wouldn't say overly friendly....just about business. I'd return for the gyro.
(3)Region R.
Yes, the gyros is great, but I can't believe no one's talking about the ITALIAN BEEF. I've been all over Chicago and hit some truly great beef stands (Freddy's in Bridgeport for example) but Munster Gyros still has THE BEST italian beef I have EVER HAD. Get it with sweet peppers - but no red sauce. AHHH I HAVE TO GO GET ONE RIGHT NOW
(5)Kimmi M.
Ask someone if they've been to Munster. If they're from the rest of Indiana, they'll ask you "MUNCIE?" but if they know about Munster, or Funster as I lovingly refer to this suburban sprawl, they know about Munster Gyros. Munster Gyros is an institution of the best Greek fast food probably ever. I started eating gyros in 3rd grade, and have worked my way through the menu. Unlike some other places, the meat is never greasy, and the pitas are grilled to perfection. The tzatziki is superb, so dip your fries in there too! The carry out service is super fast, and you get lots of food for a small price. I never miss Munster Gyros when I'm back in town. John and the whole staff are always so nice, and it still shocks me that John remembers me from going to school with his son.
(5)Harini P.
They have awesome Gyros that is filled with meat. Usually, places tend to be cheap and don't give you much meat, not here. I love the tzatziki sauce, it is nice and creamy with a hint of tartness. I always ask for extra sauce and extra onions. You might want to avoid me until I find a toothbrush. They also have some amazing Italian beef, juicy- not greasy.
(4)Jrugburn R.
Munster Gyros has been a haunt of mine since 1985 when a pal told me how good of a restaurant they were. We went in almost three times per week while I lived in the Region and honestly, they were the standard of gyros for me for two decades. John and his partner do a bang up job with 90% of the menu items and while the portions have shrunk over the years, the quality still remains as good as I remember. Only issue we ever had was the lack of napkins on your tray...always have to ask for more!!!!
(4)Davin L.
It's nice to see that good things stay preserved despite the passage of time. I was part of the Munster education system since Frank H. Hammond Elementary, all the way through Munster High School. Trends, fashions, even friends and family have changed, but one thing that (thankfully) hasn't is a tasty double cheeseburger with everything on it and an order of onion rings hot from the fryer for only six bucks. But what makes Munster Gyros really great is how well everything has been preserved inside. It's a time capsule restaurant. The posters and decor haven't changed since I first had dinner there back in 6th grade with my family after making the honor roll for the first time. Even the two Johns have stayed the same, a little grey on top, but none the worse for wear. Having dinner there last night after being away for nearly 16 years was a nice reminder of how great coming home can be.
(4)Robert K.
Best Gyros I've ever had and I have tried many all over the USA. They are fast, reasonable, and good. Their Ribs are also top of the line. Well worth the stop for carry out or eat in!
(4)Ted H.
Grew up in Munster and went to high school with the owner's son. This place has some of the best gyros I've ever had and it's much better than all the options in Chicago. The king size sub is also pretty great if gyros aren't your thing. Definitely a place to check out of you're ever in Munster.
(5)Adam W.
The food is fast, tasty, and inexpensive. I love the chili dogs! Yum! So what if you have to buy a water bottle? Who doesn't have a dollar and change to spare? It's a local business I'm happy to help out. Free water cups add up over the years...
(5)Ashley C.
My favorite gyro place to eat at. Prices are pretty good you get a drink and fries, never been disappointed. Great service!
(5)Dr Mark W.
Great food and friendly staff. Perfect size gyros plate with fresh ingredients and meat with just the right amount of seasoning. Highly recommended if you are traveling through town, located right off Calumet avenue.
(5)J M.
Best gyro ever!! Thanks for the yummie food!!! The gyro was huge with plenty of meat and sauce!! The feta was amazing. Be mindful they don't refill sodas or have tap water to drink you have to buy a bottle of water. The French fries were piping hot. The prices were really good as well. If I lived here this would be a regular stop for me.
