I like this place -- casual atmosphere, great margaritas, plenty of chips and salsa and a huge variety of food. Ate there again recently while my wife was out of town (she is not crazy about Mexican food). Had a nice vegetarian dinner -- just about the right amount of food, although I left some margarita behind -- need to order smaller next time. The only downside was watching a sad scene play out at another table, where an attractive woman of a certain age was being largely ignored by her date (no rings, so I assume it was a date) -- he walked out ahead of her. She seemed to hold back tears but spent a LOT of time wiping the table. The weird things we watch when dining alone....

I really enjoy Puerto Vallarta. It's fast, reasonably priced, and truly delicious. My order of choice is typically the taco salad with beans, but I really love that they have more than one or two vegetarian options on their menu. Including a choice of several vegetarian COMBO items. My only complaints are the noise level and a slight communication barrier.. More than once I have had to send food back because the server was unable to understand me. My solution to this has been weaving a little Spanish in to my order placement. It's not a big deal to me to do this, and it's better than sending something back and having to wait while everyone else eats. I am a sucker for their chimi-cheesecake too.

Not exactly authentic Mexican...as if I would necessarily know what "authentic Mexican" might be....after all...it is a large and diverse country with many different types of cuisines... which I just spelled quisine....thanks spell check ! what an idiot ! Tons of food for very few pesos... occasionally a gun mariachi band....very popular place in muncie.... Not bad...but not as good as some of the places in indy....however...their food has improved over the years....

Five stars. Not because it's the best Mexican food outside of Mexico. But because the food is good and really cheap. I used to come here all the time when I was a grad student. You can order things a la carte for under 2 dollars (one chicken taco was always enough for me), and if you get an order of their queso dip (which really, you must) it will be a perfect amount of food to complement your pitcher of margaritas and deep fried ice cream. Speaking of which, the deep fried ice cream is AMAZING. It's battered in some sort of corn flakes or something, fried, topped with whipped cream, honey, sprinkles, etc.... YUMMMMM. The complimentary chips and salsa are also great. I've never had food here that wasn't tasty, quick, and cheap. The atmosphere is pretty true to any disney-esque mexican restaurant in the US trying to be what it thinks Americans want a Mexican restaurant to look like. But, that said. It's casual, comfortable, and always a good time. My favorite memory of Puerto Vallarta was when a friend and I were having trouble finishing a pitcher of margaritas and they offered to package them to go. I walked out of a restaurant with a to-go cup filled with margarita. Only in Indiana.

I'm from Houston, Texas originally. Grew up with real Tex-Mex, surrounded by Mexican families and real Mexican food. This place makes me and my stomach happy. Salsa on point, my favorite is actually the chicken tacos sauteed with onions and served with salsa verde and homemade tortillas. (That's a big deal it makes all the difference.) It's just got all the right flavors as they should be. Doing it right. Bring all of my friends and family who visit to Puerto Vallarta.

When Puerto Vallarta opened, it was the first "authentic" Mexican restaurant. Ok, maybe it isn't authentic, but it sure seemed that way when the other option was Chi Chi's. The food is pretty typical of what you find at Mexican restaurants americanized for the Midwest. Since it first opened, I've had better Mexican food--but I still have a soft sport for "Porta's" (in Muncie-speak). And don't get me wrong, the food is solid...they do a good job with the tortilla chips, too. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Funcie.

The BEST in the AREA, that I've had; MEXICAN. This place is always busy, so I went early. The decor is GREAT, with the feeling of Old Mexico. The wait staff were great, and the food was great. My waiter was the best. The only "ISSUE" was that the host overlooked myself and another person, as if he didn't want us there, and when a couple came in, he seated them, an waited on the gent in front of me. Finally the host looked at me, as if to say, "WHAT the HELL do you want." I asked, "MAY I EAT HERE" ?? I don't think the owner enjoys learning this, with everything else GREAT, why a "looser HOST" to seat??

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Muncie. The staff is generally pretty nice and they also make food for carryout. My favorite part of this place are the taco salads I always order. I love that they are shaped like a giant taco or boat, because I just find it so adorable. I always get the cheese dip to add some extra gooeyness to it, but I find myself melting every time I eat it because it's so good. Some of the other things that my friends eat look super luscious. I like to get a little nibble on some of them too, because I'm one of those friends. hehe

Delicious Mexican food. The menu is very typical to what you'd find in a "standard" mex-mex restaurant in central Indiana (lunch specials, fajitas, tacos, numbred list of "specials") with a few more additions that aren't as typical, in my experience. I tried the Shrimp Taco Salad, which was huge. And very tasty. Next time I will order it with the cheese on the side, however, because I'm not a huge fan of cheese on my seafood. The fried shell was perfect when dipped into the guacamole and salsa. I was completely stuffed by the time I was finished. The queso dip is great, as well. Service is fast, but not rushed. Absolutely my favorite mexican restaurant in Muncie.

Left Muncie four years ago and still haven't found a Mexican restaurant I love as much this place. Complimentary chips and salsa are great and I always ordered the enchiladas. Lots of yummy food for a great price. Miss this place a lot.

If you happen across Funcie-Muncie, this is THE place to eat for BSU students {commonly referred to as PUERTAS}. So, as I was up there for business with BSU students, it was naturally chosen ahead of time to eat there. I've been there a few times and remembered their service was awesome and food was decent. However when you're in a group of 40-50 people, things can change. This place did not! I don't think they take RSVPs but were forewarned ahead of time about our group. Everyone was quickly seated and about 3 waiters made sure our 8 tables were covered for chips & salsa, drinks & food. Chips and salsa were amazing a) because they served the chips hot & fresh b) any time a basket ran empty, we were refilled. Many in our group ordered margs, which were delicious & strong [props to the bartender!]. Food took a little long to get out but I can't complain just because of everything else.

UGH, you get what you pay for :( Everything is filled with pure Unstrained oily meat. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas... Tons of oil! It's pretty nasty. Either it should blotted/dried prior to serving or the cook should use less oil. The three of us had to pick through and blot our meals. Not so bueno. Left us feeling pretty disgusting. Where are the sides? PV hardly gives any lettuce or toppings. Basically it's a fatty meat overdose. My arteries are wincing as I type. Salsa and chips are decent, however salsa tastes like it came from a jar and not fresh. Pico de gallo is way too heavy on the raw onion. Which made it inedible. Not enough gum in the world could cover that smell on your breath. Guac is yummy. Service is great and very friendly. No choice on beans?!? What?!? Refried or nothing. No pinto or black beans. Super bummed about this. Have been here many times, however now that there is so much more competition in town, Puerta Vallerta will not make the cut. They may have a few locations, however I suspect that is based on the familiarity with the name. Once people start trying the other Mexican joints, locality will drop. You need to step up your game PV!

Being a server myself, I wasn't all too impressed with the service that I received while at my first visit to this hyped up Mexican restaurant. Although I will say that I don't recall seeing many other servers, if not any at all. Which in that case I'm thankful she was able to get her job done in a nice, timely manner. The way they have their seating set up is somewhat odd, where my friend & I were sat at I felt very secluded & when we got up to leave it was apparent we were standing right in the little space for a walkway. The hostess hardly had any manners and rather waiting for me to get my stuff and move she kept walking towards me so I had to back up & move out of her way. Other than those minor, not all too bothersome issues, the food came out great! Nothing too fancy about it, but up to my expectations so that was good! Also a nice little addition that the chips & salsa are complimentary! Okay first visit, will definitely go back to give it another go around sometime!

Commonly referred to as "Puertas" by the local college students here at Ball State University is one of the most down to earth beat Mexican places around! It is fast service and great food with great people! One of my favorite things to get is the steak and cheese fajita! A lot of favorites are the California burrito as well as the Is-special! Hate to admit it but my friends and I go at least 2 times a week :)

I'm not an expert on Mexican food, so I can't show just how authentic this place is. I CAN say I've never got a bad meal here. The service is always fast and friendly, the food is hot and tasty, and the prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. We're in Muncie a few times a year, and we nearly ALWAYS make a stop here. They've earned my repeat business!

I've eaten at the best Mexican joints across the country (NYC, San Francisco, etc.) and NOTHING compares to "Puerta" as the Muncie locals call it. I wouldn't say it's the most authentic Mexican food, but it's delicious, VERY inexpensive, fast - I don't think I've ever waited for a table or waited longer than 15 minutes for food after I ordered. The white queso - which is so delicious I have dreams about it - doesn't exist other places in the country. You ask for queso and they look at you like you're nuts. Just FYI. Some of my "Puerta" faves: Fajita Nachos (a half order is pretty big), Taco Salad, Fajitas, and OF COURSE, margs. All their entrees come with huge sides of rice and beans, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. Portions are ginormous, in true Muncie fashion, making the value incredible.

We met here for a 'girls night'...8 girls just sitting around with some cheese dip and big pitchers of margaritas ($14 a pitcher). What could be better, really? Antionio greeted us and we were promptly seated at a table for large parties -- very quick seating for a Saturday night! Our server Jesus did not appear to mind us taking up his table at all. He was attentive and friendly--never did we feel rushed. I am not sure if it was the company or the service, but we had a great time. It was very warm in the room where we were, but not a deal breaker. Next time I will try the food. :)

Great place to go for Mexican food. Plenty of things to choice from and the quality and quantity is worth the wait. Waiters and waitresses are attentive and very pleasant. Alot more authentic style Mexican than most Mexican Restaurants. We always get the Fajitas for 2. Always have enough left over to take home. They provide you with boxes to take home the left overs including sauces and chips.

Whether it be for a celebration, a dinner with friends or for the simple fact of a margarita craving, Puerto's is your spot. Their margaritas -- my oh my. Full of power. I suggest coming with a DD after you indulge in one of their fine drinks. I'm fond of Puero's "IT Special." So good. It has been a favorite ever since my freshman year at Ball State. I can't tell you how many times I went to Puerto's during my four years in Muncie. A lot. It seemed to be the place to go for any gathering. With it being on Tillotson, it's literally just a jump away from campus. I'm not a huge fan of their most recent salsa option. It didn't used to be so spicy - but it seems that they turned up the heat. Overall, a wonderful Mexican restaurant worthy of your time. Yay Muncie! If Muncie has anything to offer, it's Ball State and Puerto's.

This is a Ball State University student favorite !! I have come here several times with friends for their awesome margaritas. If you are looking to dine on a budget then this is where you need to eat. They have very low prices and it sure beats campus food. Food critics would be appalled but for college kids we love it. The service is always really good and you don't have to wait hardly at all for the food to arrive. I'm not sure exactly what that says about the food but you can't complain about not waiting.

Uninspired bland standard Mexican food. No hint of seasoning except salt. Service in the back room is minimal. They just throw the food on the table. - sort it out yourself. You may or may not get drink refills. Service better in the main dining area. Why do they think I want a TV blaring during the meal.

Puerto Vallarta does not serve the best Mexican food you'll ever find. It doesn't even serve the best Mexican food that caters to American tastes. But it's great Mexican comfort food, and a great place to go for dinner in this town. Some of the high points for me are the very reasonable prices, the different dining areas, each with a different feel, and the very quick service. Your food won't appear so quickly that you didn't get a chance to enjoy your complimentary chips and salsa, but I've been served more slowly at McDonald's. You may find the decor cheesy or charming; same with the mariachi bands that occasionally play (it can be difficult to hear). Also, if you don't like dining in huge crowds, you'll want to eat a little early, especially on weekends. And again, if you're a foodie or Hispanic, you may say this isn't the highest quality food or necessarily very authentic. But, high quality or not, it's delicious! I have brought many people here from out of town and I've never left with anyone who didn't say "That was soooo good!" For a fun atmosphere, an inexpensive evening, and Mexican dishes you recognize, this is a great choice.

Hadn't been to Puerta in a while, after the salsa and food came, I remember why. Salsa was very watery and didn't have a good taste at all. Taco salad was bland and chicken was tuff. Left unsatisfied :-(

I disliked it immensely. It had no real flavour or texture and the choriqueso was runny. There has to be better mexican food in Muncie.

Ok food. Depends on location. One near Ball State is the biggest. I've taken visitors from out-of-town to the one on Tillotson. Our service is generally good. The food quality is sometimes tasty, sometimes bland. My son had a chile relleno last week and it was very "woody" and stringy. The one on Wheeling is smaller, so it feels crowded even when there's not that big a crowd.

i had the tamales. they were fresh but a little cool. dough was flavored with cinnamon but not as if it were a dessert. the complimentary chips were not seasoned with salt. the salsa tasted like crushed canned tomatoes that had chili peppers stirred in. not bad, but nothing special. it is also came with a side of refried beans and rice. the rice was a long grain that had been cooked with tomato and none of the grains clumped together so i guess they wash their rice really thoroughly before cooking it. dos equis was $2.29 on tap. i think the low cost will keep me coming back because the food is just average.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
