We decided to have lunch at Johnny Carinos after my sons graduation from Ball State University in wonderful Muncie IN. After being at Ball State for 4+ years he decided to try it today. We had very good service. We all ordered from the lunch menu. The smaller portions for lunch was just right. The food was hot and tasted great. Good value for the money. We will return if in Muncie again.

Muncie, IN: An alternative to Olive Garden. We arrived at almost 9:00pm and were seated immediately. Server John was gracious and very friendly. When he was unclear about some gluten free details, he went to find the information. The fresh, hot bread was soft but lacking a crisp crust. The toasted garlic in the dipping oil was nice with crunch. Hubby had an enjoyable "Traditional Margherita Pizza" on a gluten-free crust. Tonight was my turn to be disappointed in an entree salad, the "Chopped Club". The menu described this salad as topped with sliced, grilled chicken. Well, I think the combined slices of chicken could not have been more than 3/4" thick and 3" long. There was a considerable amount of pepperoni and a decent amount of bacon. I had thought the pepperoncini, pickled spicy, Italian peppers, was a relative of pepperoni. Not worth $10.99. My hot water was refreshed without having to ask for it. The dessert menu features no gluten free options.

While planning this years trip to Muncie I thought about Johnny Carino's. I eat in Johnny Carino's each year when I visit Muncie for the National Model Airplane Championships. The food here is OK a step above the fare that is served at the Olive Garden. Being a New Yorker I am accustomed to eating in some of the better Italian restaurants here in NYC. When traveling outside NYC Italian cuisine becomes hit or miss. So when in Muncie, IN Johnny Carino's is my go to Italian. They start you off with fresh baked bread and their seasoned olive oil to dip it in. A nice way to start. Their portions are large and quite filling. They tend to over sauce everything, and sometimes the pasta is over cooked. I like their veal parm and pasta and believe it or not their meatballs. I'll also give them credit for serving one of my favorite beers. Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. The only place I've seen it before is in Kentucky. This is a chain restaurant but I've never seen another during my travels. If you are in the mood for Italian while traveling through Muncie, give Johnny Carino's a try. It's better than the Olive Garden and a much better value for your money.

It's okay I guess. I'm always severely underwhelmed with the food and exasperatingly overwhelmed with the receipt every time I eat here. I'm just a simple kind of boy who would prefer just to go to Fazoli's or go to the Walmart and buy things and cook my Italian food at home.

Not a bad place to go eat a nice meal. Waiter's were a bit slow even though they were not that busy. But the food was good and the place was nice and clean.

Like many others have said before me, Johnny Carino's is actually pretty good for a chain restaurant. Sadly in Muncie there aren't any local places to get fresh, homemade Italian food. Carino's is a decent substitute. I love the herb bread and toasted garlic and oil they serve. Honestly, I could eat that all night and be absolutely fine with it. Portions are fairly large, and as a non-meat-eater, I have several options. And the wait/kitchen staff are always willing to adapt a dish for my dietary needs. I'm a big, big fan of the Timballo, sans meat. Salads are crisp and not soggy with too much dressing. And their mini desserts are just the right size after a long meal of lots and lots of carbs! The bar is typical, nothing to write home about. Decor is a little kitschy, but I like the open feel of the restaurant. Gets a bit loud in there, but they are a busy place. One major complaint: TOO MANY TVs. Come on, people. It's not a sport's bar - it's a family dining establishment. Why would any dining area need multiple televisions? And who watches TV while eating with family and friends anyway? Yikes.

Yes, Johnny Carino's is a chain restaurant, but as far as chain Italian food goes - you won't find any better. When I was living in Muncie and Anderson, we went here pretty often... starting the first week that they opened. The restaurant is located on McGalliard - but in Muncie, what isn't? Haha. It has a large private lot and a pretty spacious interior. I can't recall ever having bad service here either. The complimentary appetizer is fresh-baked bread that you dip in an oil with crushed, dried garlic - delicious. My favorite appetizer is the Mozzarella with Marinara, but my partner and brother both really love the Italian Nachos and Sicilian Fire Sticks. I almost always order the Chicken Milano for my entree - it's my favorite - but I've also tried and liked the Baked Cheese Tortelloni. My brother and partner always go for the Skilletini. My favorite thing to drink here are the Italian Sodas. I really like to get vanilla and cherry in mine. You get one free refill with these. Soooo good!

It was fine, I guess, but compared to the previous time I had eaten there, the quality seems to have taken a hit. Of course it might be just because I learned how to cook such dishes myself, but I will say that it's much better than soem other Italian chains out there. The bread and oil, have always been delicious.

Really great food - I recommend especially the chicken diavolo. They also have the tastiest house dressing of any restaurant in town. Best of all, I like to bring my whole family here for special occasion dinners, and we've not even once been pressured to hurry up, or to be finished.

I love Carinos. They have a wonderful menu selection, decent mixed drinks, and I'm almost always able to get my preferred seating in most restaurants. (Booth in the bar.) They have delicious, fresh baked bread to start you off and their desserts are divine. (I really love the new mini-desserts, since I can rarely finish a whole one by the time I'm done with dinner.) The staff is typically attentive and friendly, although we've had 2 less than great experiences that come to mind. Which isn't too bad in almost 4 years, and management was swift in taking care of it both times.

Very good food. I was pleasantly surprised. Other yelpers say this is a chain restaurant but I've never heard of it. I had the gorgonzola chicken penne and it was delicious. Pasta and chicken were perfectly cooked, good sized portion and the sauce was rich. Tomatoes in the pasta were fresh as were the mushrooms. My mom had the chicken pesto with linguine and she really liked it. They also give you fresh hot bread with olive oil and toasted garlic for dipping. Good prices and easy location in Muncie. I went here for my pre-race meal as I was in town for the Muncie Traithlon. I also had an orange Italian cream soda. Our waiter was nice, friendly, and very attentive. Overall a great place for Italian in Muncie!

I'm sorry if you don't like chain restaurants but for me Johnny Carinos is as good as it gets concerning Italian. Forget about Olive Garden, or Bravo's, or whatever other Italian chains there are. Johnny's wins. I usually just make a trip to Muncie just for Carino's and have never been disappointed. The service here has always been great. The food has always been delicious. And I think the prices are extremely reasonable. My favorite dish of all time is the Spicy Chicken and Shrimp pasta. Which is a penne pasta with a alfredo sauce that has a kick to it which is perfect is so many ways. Oh and the best part is the bread. seriously. They give it to you as a whole loaf and you tear apart to your hearts desire and dip it in dried roasted garlic floating in delicious olive oil. If you don't like this then I don't know what to tell ya. I'll always keep coming back here. Thank you Johnny Carino who ever you are. Thank you.

I LOVE Carino's! The whole atmosphere is wonderful. The open-kitchen concept lets guests watch as the cooks prepare food. Some even show off a little! Every dish I've gotten there has been great. I really am glad they have implemented mini-deserts; however, I am nervous about the increasingly chain-like atmosphere as seen in the advertising outdoors and in. There was something really charming about minimal advertising. I heard that this location is under new management, so keep and eye out for changes- both good and bad.

Ok, I must confess that I'm not a huge fan of most chain restaurants, so that may color my review a bit. I would say that the food is good, but not great. I had the Veal Parm, and enjoyed it but have had much better. I think that their sauce was the true culprit as it lacked strong flavor. The atmosphere was fine, being standard decor for chain type restaurants. The service was very good. Overall, its worth going if you like quality chain restaurants. I, however, will opt next time to find a good local eatery.

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
