This place is worth the drive and the experience of trying it out! They have a wide variety of salads (greens, fruit, pasta), main dishes, side dishes, desserts, and breads. Everything looks delicious and the price is about right! Unlike other sit-down a la carte cafeterias, GBC has plenty of FLAVOR. I really enjoy how roomy this cafeteria is. They have many choices in seating areas. The layout is great and designed well. They care about their company and recently renovated during July of 2014 to make updated improvements! I am a fan of fish options at cafeteria places, and I enjoyed the fish at Gray's. The macaroni and cheese is edible, too. I really enjoyed the chocolate cake, the most!

We stopped for lunch on our way down to Bloomington. This is classic Midwest style cafeteria style with stick to your ribs comfort food. We arrived around noon on a cold Saturday and there was not much of a line. I had roast beef, mashed potatoes and corn with a slice of chocolate cream pie. The roast beef was fine but not much flavor. The corn and potatoes were fine but nothing special. The portion size was plenty for what we paid. The chocolate cream pie was excellent was was the peanut butter pie my SO had. It is cafeteria style so I did not have much service expectations, however they did not do much to refill our waters and we had to tack down someone to get to go containers. It appears regulars and large parties get most the attention.

If you love cakes, pies, desserts in general, and fried/heavy food, you'll provably love this place just like most people that review it. But if you want a healthy lunch, and don't care for desserts, like me, it can be difficult. Once a year I eat here with my colleagues for a team building dinner. This year, I actually managed to discover a hidden treasure that suits my desires: the baked fish. This visit it was tilapia. Panko and parmesan (I think) coated and then oven baked. Two huge filets along with a side (I think it was actually an entree) salad made a perfectly filling lunch. If you want something healthy, just go somewhere else. But if you have to eat here you can make it work. Or if you are into the above mentioned food, this is your place. At roughly $10-12 for a massive tray if food, you won't leave hungry. One last tip, if you arrive right when they open for lunch you will wait outside in line. Keep that in mind in the winter. Once inside, the line moves quickly.

Another night of Indiana comfort food, but this one wasn't nearly as good. The Cafeteria is a real old school place, with lots of comfort food like meatloaf and fried chicken. They are famous for their pies and if this were a pie review I would give it 4 stars. The cherry and the lemon pie were delicious. Unfortunately the mains didn't live up to expectations. First of all this place clearly relies on large volume and specializes in comfort food. That doesn't mean, however, that the veggies should be out of a can. The green beans and broccoli were just not very good. The Mac and cheese is well known and was very creamy. The fried chicken was good but nothing special. All in all, I would recommend sticking with the desert, you will be well rewarded.

Used to be GREAT, now it is not very good. Food is normally cold not fresh, really miss this place. It used to be so good.

I've grown up eating food from here. In fact my grandmother worked at the original location for the Gray Brothers in downtown Mooresville. This visit was an early birthday dinner. It never disappoints. If you go, yes there is almost always a line but it moves well. While you are in line you get to see what's available and have time to decide before you reach a server. There is carry out available if you choose. This is home cooking at its best. Comfort food heaven. Go hungry and leave stuffed. Gray Brothers is best known for their pies so be sure to take a slice or a whole pie home if you are too stuffed to eat it after dinner. For holiday planning you need to pre-order your pies or cakes. They sell a ton at the holidays. The place has been remodeled recently and has a cozy, warm atmosphere for such a large facility. Go get your grub on!

I've always loved Gray Brothers. Their food is really, really good. Especially when you need/want comfort food. My #1 favorite is the chicken and noodles - and for those who won't eat the entire (quite generous) portion - you might not know that they offer a small portion for the main course. My most recent trip I got fried shrimp (which were delicious) and a pumpkin roll that melts in your mouth. My only issue with the place is that it is SO dark and dreary in there. I recently heard they'd done a renovation and the only thing I could see that had been done was that there was a new "country store" that was added to the middle of the dining area. Meh.

I have eaten here since i was a small child. I love eating here. It is cafeteria style and you can pick what you want. I love the apple pie and fried potatoes. It looks like they have updated a bit since I was here last. The middle room that used to house tables now looks like a gift shop of some sort. Everything that I have ordered I have enjoyed. There menu changes daily and it is available online so you can see what they are serving. The side dishes are not online so I have to take my chances on if fried potatoes are being served that day. Overall, I will continue to come here because it not only reminds me of coming with my grandma but the food is totally comfort food and delicious.

Gray's is the best tasting and most original cafeteria food I have ever had in Indiana. Only Jonathan Byrd's, when its cafeteria was still open, could compete, but even then, Gray's dominated. Our family likes to come here for Sunday dinner. They have big round tables so that everyone can sit and eat and talk to each other. There are a couple dozen kinds of pies and a few cakes. I like the chocolate or lemon meringue pies. For entrees, there is plenty of meat to choose from, and usually fish as well. My favorites are the chicken and noodles or the meatloaf. Yum!! Side dishes are pretty standard fare vegetables. Soda drinks and coffee to drink. They do have a pretty good value kids meal as well. The wait staff are attentive and friendly. They will help carry your trays to your table and will come around to refill drinks and to help you clean up after unloading your food from your tray. Gray's just has a homey, comfy feeling to it. Lots of good food and opportunity to sit and talk with family in a quiet, clean and comfortable setting.

If you're making the trek to Bloomington from Indianapolis, you must plan for a lunch or dinner stop at Gray Brothers. It's kind of like an original MCL. Set up in a similar manner, Gray Brothers wants you to grab a tray, silverware and napkins and slide down the line of what seems like endless food options. Though why is the pie and dessert the 2nd thing you see, just after salads? It's kind of torture. But, get the strawberry pie. Yes, you'll find livers and onions here. Meatloaf. Fried Chicken. Roast beef. And my favorite... fried chicken livers. It's something I can rarely find on a menu these days, but Gray Brothers satisfies my craving. (I suggest getting a side of brown gravy to dip them in). This is where my meal starts to add up - creamy macaroni and cheese, green beans with potatoes, creamed corn, mashed potatoes... it's like Thanksgiving a la carte. The food has great homestyle flavor, but if you're looking for culinary creativity, you may be disappointed. It's just not that kind of place. Instead, take a bite, close your eyes and imagine that you're at your grandmothers house, because that's what Gray Brothers is.

5 stars for pie but 4 stars for the rest of the food. The food has lost some of its luster over the years as portion sizes decreased and more usual entrees were added. They recently renovated and improved the dining room. Overall it is a 5 star experience considering history, atmosphere and the pie.

This is a wonderful cafeteria. I could eat here every day for lunch or dinner. They are a ways off the path for us downtown Indy folks. They do it right with presenting salads and dessert first. The strawberry short cake is very good. Any entrees are good. One never walks away with their food feeling like they didn't get enough. The portions are just what they should be. When in Mooresville this is a must. I am surprised they have not been on one of those food programs on the Food Network.

Gray Brothers remains the singular acceptable cafeteria in existence, and a great taste of Indiana. I grew up in Southern Indiana, and now live elsewhere. . .very elsewhere (Denver Colorado). When I do visit family in Indiana its mostly north of Indy (and not south toward where I grew up . . .middle of nowhere. For the most part I don't like cafeterias. I avoid MCL. . .Jonathan Bird (no thanks). . .but Grays is always the exception (along with Shapiros). Grays is pretty typical in cafeteria format. you start with a winding road through fantastic Indiana desserts such as strawberry shortcake, sugar cream cake, and rhubarb. Than you hit a selection of cafteria served items. . .this time we went with Tilapia (baked not fried) and a chicken and noodles dish. I didn't mention, but we also got an Oreo Cake. . . We passed on the Indiana traditional pork tenderloin. . .due to us eating very well in Indiana, but it looked so good. Gray is also very helpful when it comes to getting to the table. You have a quasi-server who helps you with refills, or helps a busy mom bring stuff to table. . or gets to go orders or something extra (and you don't want to go through the line) Indiana is king of chain restaurants and lack of local flavor. . .with that in mind on your next trip to visit your kids at Indiana University Bloomington, might as well go slightly out of the way to and eat at Grays

I was craving home-cooked comfort food, and I found myself at Gray Brothers Cafeteria. Had heard good things about it (especially the fried chicken!) and thought I'd give it a try. This place is set up like a cafeteria where you get in line, pick up a tray, and put items that you want onto the tray and make your way down the line. Important note: arrive early right when they open or you'll be waiting in line a long time. I was there in the parking lot about 15 minutes before they opened on a Tuesday and there were about 10 other cars waiting as well. They have different featured menu items each day, so check their website before you go. I had the fried chicken (you can choose white meat or dark meat), mashed potatoes with white gravy, green beans, a hot roll, and a piece of apple pie. The fried chicken alone will have me coming back to this place over and over again! The food was delicious, exactly what I was craving and the atmosphere is cozy and warm. A great place to take family after church or hang out with friends in a laid back setting. Visit this place now! You won't be sorry.

Went again yesterday and we got there at 4PM and you get right in then! I mean at 5 and teh line is out the door, Once again, more food than you really should eat for not very much money. I had teh Pork tenderloin with white gravy which is really incredible/ Okay, a friend and I both had the stuffing. We like stuffing. we both thought, and our third tried it and agreed, way too salty. But more like kitchen accident salty. Like 2 or three people each added the salt without tasting it. This won't be a deal breaker, I will still eat here when I am in the area! It was just disconcerting. The mac and cheese was phenomenal, and that really makes up for many sins that could have been committed! I had the German Chocolate Cake, meh. I had the strawberry cheesecake last time and I should have had it again. Or the strawberry pie, the whipped cream on that is dense and real and wonderful . The Chocolate cream pie also looks really good. What was I thinking? I was lured in by coconut. And what am I doing ordering a piece of meat bigger than my face and two starches and a dessert.... I know that is too much food. Painfully too much food. But still.... I will be back.

I love everything at Grey Brothers Cafeteria. I always get the same thing, the chicken and noodles or beef and noodles with mashed potatoes and brown gravy and the biggest helping of macaroni and cheese. I do not like macaroni and cheese but when it comes to Gray Brothers macaroni and cheese it is the best I've ever had in my life, I love it!!!! My husband always gets the fried pork tenderloin with white gravy and fried chicken livers and swears by them and they are so amazing. Living so close to Mooresville we have the honor of going here as much as we can and as often as we can.

Pretty dratted god food considering that it's all prepared in advance and waiting on a heat table. My dad swears by the fried chicken livers, and I had mac n cheese and a bowl of fresh fruit. I was pleasantly surprised by the mac, very creamy and delicious! I could tell there was just a bit of powdered mustard in the sauce, just like momma used to make!

We just had dinner here a few hours ago Sunday July 5th. The parking lot was full and it is a big place so you can get confused where to park. We parked on the side that said Carryout. So we had to walk to the other end of the building to get into the main entrance. No big deal on a nice day but would not want to park that far away in bad weather, so we know better next time. So speaking of carryout, they have a whole line that is dedicated to nothing but carryout. We dined in and the line was pretty long but nothing like what has been described in previous reviews. Everything looked really good so the hard part is deciding what to get and not spending 40 dollars by the time you get to the end of the line. Although all the fried foods called out to me in a big way, i refrained and got the pork and dressing (stuffing) with green beans, corn and pecan pie with sweet tea. The pork had some sort of sweet sauce on it and at first bite i was like I don't think i will like this but it grew on me. There were definitely some better selections but due to a temporary diet restriction I could not have the fried foods but fret not I will be back for them. The other person in my party got the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet tea and the strawberry pie, he said everything was great but the pie he only got it because of all the reviews and he said while it was good it did not live up to all the raving reviews on here. you pick up a drink just before you pay and they had a bunch of small glasses of sweet tea and one giant one, little did I know that they charge extra like 55 cents for that bigger glass which was silly because refills are free and I never got one so was kinda a waste. I don't think that I saw anything that didn't look good, it did cost us about $34 for two but it was worth it because not only did the food taste good but when you dine at such places it caters to a different clientele than what you might see/get at a buffet.

Best cafeteria I have ever been too. Everything (but the cheese cake, not enough gram cracker crust) is great, but, I love the Salmon Patty, and homemade sauces.

Bomb.com ! Fried chicken was juicy. Mac and cheese was superb. Kale salad was great and finished off with some strawberry cheesecake that was the best I've ever had! Can't wait to go back!

We make a trip here a couple of times per year from Bloomington, because the food is so good! The portions are generous, so you don't have to get much in order to get full, and it's kind of hard to decide what all you want to get. Usually we pick a few things per person and just share everything. The staff is very attentive about refilling drinks, etc. It's a nice place, and the food quality is very good. They have a great variety as well.

Have always heard Grays was good but this is my first time trying. Food is amazing from cheesy garlic muffins to their dressing to sweet potatoes and Apple's. Only down side is nothing is labeled but staff is always a available to answer questions. I'm not sure about desert coming first and there is everything from cheesecake to pies.

Great Cafeteria offering old-fashioned and delicious American classic supper fare. Went on a nostalgic whim, and it did not disappoint. Gray Brothers Cafeteria is a huge, wood-paneled space, with wooden tables and chairs, country style. Food service is Cafeteria style, with trays sliding over railings whole and endless selection of food items look at you from glass shelves or appetizing arranged piles (in this order): salads, deviled eggs, gelatin and fruit molds, Waldorf salads; then a never-say-stop procession of cream pies, fruit pies, tarts, molds and flans (during my visit, dessert options included rhubarb, blueberry, blackberry, nut and sugar pies). Then the hot dishes, starting with the proteins: crispy buttermilk fried chicken and tenders, chicken fried steak, roast beef, breaded tilapia, baked salmon, pork tenderloins... Then the vegetables, fried, boiled or buttered (do you butter butter beans?) and finally, breads and drinks and a cashier who was soo sweet at to run back to the beginning of the line to get me a long iced tea spoon!). I chose the chicken straps, the green beans with ham, and the buttered corn... With some unsweetened iced tea, a deviled eggs chaser, and the most deliciously tart rhubarb pie, obviously made in premises, and that had absolutely no strawberries! The meal was epic. The restaurant was nicely filled but no crowded (it was a Wednesday) but I am sure Sundays must be madness. The parking, like the inside space, is huge. The service at the table was also lovely but unobtrusive (a doe-eyed girl named Raven was delightful). apparently, Grey Brothers has been an Indy institution for 70 years, and the dining hall is showing some historic fraying at the edges. But... Who cares? Oh, that rhubarb pie tasted like summer. This is a piece of Americana, an echo of a bygone era. I highly recommend it.

It gets the four stars for: 1) Killer deserts - I gained a pound by just touching the cake plate. Awesome variety and very tasty! 2) Nostalgia - This place is like a time capsule. Old school cafeteria with long tables you may or may not have to share with other folks. Big roaring fireplaces and lanterns. It's nifty! 3) People watching - it's like a zoo of weird and old humans. Love it!! I could stay here hours and just observe. Copious amounts of elderly. 4) Price and service - for what you get it's fast (obviously since its cafeteria style), and for the crap-ton of food and cake I had along with my Dads tray, my total bill was only $30, drinks included. The food was good but not great. I got the fried cod and it was soooo greasy! The Mac & Cheese was yummy though. Quality of the food will only get this place 4/5 stars max, but as a whole, the place is pretty cool.

This place has stayed true for decades I have been told. Even today youngsters like me have frequently enjoyed the food available here. This is definitely a family/meeting place. get ready for some home-style cooking, it truly is good here!

This restaurant is definitely different. I can't say that I have ever been to a cafeteria style place. The line although it may look extremely long, it moves very quickly. However, for those of us like myself who do not make quick on the spot decisions about food I felt very rushed as everyone was running through the lines and once you choose something your stuck with it on your tray (obviously lol). The food was mediocre at best some of it was room temp and some of it was mushy. It reminded me very much of a over priced school lunch. I guess they are known for pies although I did not have any so I am unsure but they did carry a rhubarb pie which you don't see very often anymore. Lastly, the service... They had servers there to assist in drink refill (by the way their glasses looked only to be maybe 12oz but with added ice nothing at all really). It was difficult to get prompt drink refills and trays and plates removed from our table. I went to this restaurant for a family get together but I can't say it would be my go to restaurant.

If you are looking for a place to take grandma and grandpa, or to grab a piece of pie, this is your place. Traditional Indiana cafeteria style, with a variety of typical midwest dishes; fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, creamed corn...and every kind of pie you can imagine. Don't let the long line fool you, it moves quickly and there is plenty of seating. There is also a take out section, where all the food is available. The atmosphere is casual, great for any day/any time. Notable favorites: Pecan Pie, Raisin Pie, Rhubarb Pie, Lemon Meringue, and Hummingbird Cake.

I stopped at Gray Brothers for a surprise carry-out meal on my way home from a business trip. The carry-service was speedy and portions fine. We ate the fried chicken (excellent), mashed potatoes, calif./borccoli mix, and pie. My bill was $24. The meals traveled two hours and were still slightly warm and only needed a quick heat-up in the microwave. I was disappointed for a few reasons: The chocolate pie filling had a canned/processed after taste .. bad enough that my wife didn't eat it. A friend who was at our house took a bite and turned it down too. The mashed potatoes had a healthy dollop of white gravy but the potatoes had a strong instant potato taste. So I am knocking off a star for the chocolate pie that a lot of reviewers do like, but we just didn't at all. I am wondering if all the creme pies are processed. I also am going to take off a star for the price. The processed pie and potatoes made the $12 per plate price high. I do plan to go back because that fried chicken is simply the best! :)

It's a cafeteria, how many of them are even around anymore. Sure you might be the youngest person there, but who cares. Load up down the line, it's good cafeteria food and I recommend it. 4 stars for cafeteria food.

I have been here before, and it has always been good. Yesterday we went and I just absolutely love their mac and cheese, the best I have ever tasted. The vegetables are good too. I had the fried chicken and he had the fish, which were both good. Your eyes can be too big for your stomach and you walk out full. The staff is great and they work hard at refilling your drinks and clearing tables. Good home made cooking.

The desserts are unholy...so SO good. It's only about 20 minutes from the Indianapolis Airport, in Mooresville, Indiana. They're open 7 days a week and serve until 8:30pm daily. I brought out of town guests (from Wisconsin and LA) who were on their way to the airport and they were very impressed with the food. "I don't know how many calories are in this--but it's fantastic!" This isn't a buffet, it's a cafeteria. You choose as much or as little as you want to eat, pile it onto your tray, and pay for that. I've never had anything that wasn't GREAT here. Entrees include chicken and noodles, fried chicken, meatloaf, ham, pot roast, GIANT fried pork tenderloin, and others, depending on the day of the week. Sides are awesome too: peas, lima beans, corn, fried potatoes (the thin sliced kind), macaroni and cheese, green beans loaded with bacon, sweet potatoes, stewed tomatoes. There are also a bunch of cold sides like salads, jello, pudding, deviled eggs, pickled beets, fruit, and cole slaw. The giant yeast rolls are heavenly-soft, airy, and just a hint of sweetness. I'm am not a "chicken tenders" person. Generally, I find chicken tenders to be generic and unexciting...unless they're fresh and hand-breaded, which they are here. Really yummy. I pine for the chicken and noodles...the noodles are thick, irregularly shaped, obviously made from scratch, and floating in a buttery liquid whose consistency is exactly halfway between broth and gravy. I've only had a bite of the pork tenderloin: it's too big to fit on the plate, so it's way too much for me, but it was great. I've also taken bites of meatloaf, roast beef, and fried chicken off the plates of others...all were way above my expectations. From experience, I have learned that I can consume one side dish, one entree, and no roll in order to have room for some pie. Trust me...you want to be able to eat that pie. Tall cheesecakes, hummingbird cake, German chocolate cake, and like 20 kinds of pie will make your brain explode. The meringue pies are unfathomably high. And thankfully, it is meringue, not whipped cream. You will find whipped cream on the pumpkin pie, strawberry shortcake, and pecan pie. My favorites are pecan pie and coconut cream pie. The pieces are large enough to share. It's fun to go with a group and pass the pies around so you get a little of each. The line is long if you get here at "prime time" on a Friday or Saturday night, but even when the line stretches outside past the doors and down the sidewalk, the wait is usually only going to be 30-40 minutes until you're sitting there eating. Not much different than going to most restaurants on Saturday night, except instead of standing in the waiting area 30+, you're actually in a moving line. The food (which you're able to see once you make it past the 2nd set of doors) provides inspiration to keep standing, and you can actually see the progress you're making. Once you choose your table, a server will bring refills on your drinks, to-go boxes, and whatever else you need. Here is a tip: pick up a glass (or 2!) of water when you get your drink. Then you won't have to wait for the rushed waitstaff to bring you refills, as the glasses are quite small. There is a separate entrance on the opposite side of the building for carry-out orders--you need not wait in the dining line.

Honestly what can I say here.... This place is amazing! I have been trying to limit the 4 & 5 star reviews, but places like Gray Brothers are really making it hard. If you can't tell by the name, Gray Brothers is a cafeteria style restaurant just like your grade school lunch room, only better. This place offers some of the best comfort food around at a minimal price. I left stuffed for only $14. Included in the $14 was their famous meatloaf, mac'n cheese, sweet potatoes (the kind with marshmallows), a monstrous piece of German chocolate cake and an iced tea. Literally everything looks good here. I have no clue how I asked the desert section with only one piece of cake.... I mean I could have easily picked up two pieces of pie.. chocolate, banana, coconut or butterscotch cream plus cherry or blueberry!!! The selections are so simple, but there are so many combinations of what you can have. For the main dish there is meatloaf, ribs, fried chicken, fried chicken tenders and what I will be trying next time, fried pork with gravy. I was incredibly excited when I first decided to go to Gray Bros since it sounded a lot like a place my grandma used to take my brother and I in Toledo when we were kids. I was not let down at all by this place! Unfortunately its a bit out of the way for me, but proved to be an excellent spot I took a friend who was flying out of town.

Simply the Best! I now live i Chicago but I lived in Indy for 4 years and this is my favorite resturant in Indiana. Just good fresh country cooking at its best. Everthing is good but my favorites are pork tenderloin and meatloaf. You can't leave without getting piece of stawberry pie. Thank you Gray's, well done!

I chose this from Roadfood message board. I think I chose it because of the nostalgia value for me. I grew up in the next state, across from a mall with a cafeteria. I remember being barely old enough, or tall enough to see over the tray rails to eagerly pick out my red jello and macaroni and cheese. The long double line lets you preview the food before getting to the trays. And true to my memory, they start with dessert offerings first. Yeh!!! I picked the Sugar Cream Pie. Never had it before, but apparently it's sugar, sugar, and more sugar, baked in a crust. I passed on the mid Western iceburg salads.....get me to the Corn...the Breaded Pork Tenderloin (a specialty in the area, but I didn't grow up knowing that) were huge! I reached the Meatloaf with it's thick red sauce on top, and the Beef and Handcut Noodles.....what do I do? oh me! I went for the noodles (to be sorely disappointed, but more on that later) but DRAT, can I get Mac and Cheese now? Husband took care of that! The Beef and Noodles were at the same time, bland and overly salty. What a pisser! Husbands Pork Chop in Apple Mustard sauce (?) was actually really good. As good as I would expect in a sit down proper, table-clothed place. The Mac and Cheese, though deemed only 2.5 stars after eating, was retro-up-graded to 4 stars after having Mac n Cheese at another place a few days later. Would I go back...yes. Again for the nostalgia value, I'd choose the Mac and Cheese and probably the Meatloaf.

Delicious, and well worth the trip! Delicious chicken, and the best pecan pie I've ever had. I don't like livers, but it smelled good, and I was tempted! The pork tenderloin was huge. The sides all looked fresh and yummy-I had beans and Mac n cheese this time, but have tried others in the past(all good). If you're debating, stop and just go!

They probably have the best fried chicken I have ever had. That's no exaggeration either. I just came back from Nashville (TN) and Mississippi and while I found great fried chicken there as well, Gray Brothers still has them beat.

As good as it gets! This is unquestionably the best of many ratings. Comfort food. Down-home cooking. Desserts are by-far the best part of the meal. Cakes and pies galore - and for purchase, too. I always get the baked tilapia, sometimes the meatloaf, each an excellent choice. The highchairs are amazing and seating for children is perfect! We purchased my kids first pieces of dinnerware from Gray's. It's one restaurant we always have to go to when my family visits.

Home cooked grandma style comfort food is awaiting us here! My parents said they always went here when they were kids. Well I finally moved to town, and live nearby so I had to give it a try. The country fried steak here is awesome! The biggest surprise is their stuffing actually. I normally wont touch the stuff, but just last week stopped in to get containers to go. Everyone wondered how I made, but I had to tell them that I bought it! It is a little more pricey than I would have thought. But start small and share things between friends and family so you can try it all!

Always a great place to stop for a quick bite that is not fast food. The food is served in a cafeteria style setting. The first section you come to is the salad and cold appetizer section. This includes side salads, jello based salads, and deviled eggs. Next is the best section ever, desserts! Every pie you can think of and moist cakes as well. They have the classics you can't find anywhere else like raisin and butterscotch. Up next is the entree section. My personal favorite is the roast beef but you really can't go wrong with any selection. The sides include macaroni (a personal favorite), green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, and other options that change daily. Even though your tray will be full, grab a roll or cornbread at the last section. The prices are quite reasonable at about $10 a head. Not bad for quality food that has been owned by the same family for generations.

Great down home cooking and perfect for carry out too! Can easily accommodate large groups. My whole family loves the rolls and pies!

Gray Brothers Cafeteria made me feel like a lucky woman over the weekend. On my way home to Indianapolis from Evansville, I was feeling pretty sad that on one of my first Casino experiences ever, I had lost fifty bucks in the slot machines. I felt even more sad and unlucky when we pulled into the Cafeteria and saw the line for lunch weaving all the way out the doors, along the sidewalk, and into the street (!). We hoped that the line would move quickly. It didn't. Five minutes in, and we had hardly even budged. I told my dining partner to remain in line, and I went exploring. What did I find around the back of the building? ANOTHER cafeteria line with exactly the same food (perhaps slightly less choices, but definitely all of the necessities were on the line), only with four people in line. Yep, I am serious. The "eat-in" line was out to the street; the carry-out line had four people in it. I stealthily walked back to my dining partner and whispered "Want to get carry-out and go have a picnic with our lunch"? Obviously, he was onto my plan. It was already 1:30p.m., the lunch line wasn't moving, and we were starving. As we walked over to the non-line carryout entrance, I saw something green floating across the pavement of the parking lot. I reached down, and what did I find? A crisp, twenty dollar ($20!) bill. Seriously. While cutting the line to go get carryout, I found twenty bucks. It paid for all but three dollars of our delicious lunch. As for the food....everything was super-delicious. I had the hand-battered chicken fingers, green beans, and mashed potatoes with white gravy. Dining partner had the meat loaf, also with green beans, but with au gratin potatoes. Everything was very, very good. I think the meatloaf might have been a pinch better than the chicken fingers. The only thing that turned me off slightly by the chicken fingers was the awkward package of Kraft ranch dressing I was given to dip them in. Honestly, they would have been much better (and more homestyle) if, say, I was given some homemade gravy to dip them in. That would have been gggoooooddd. My only complaint about the mashed potatoes was that I wanted more of them. The au grats were delicious and cheesy and rich as well. For dessert - the strawberry pie is a MUST TRY. Seriously. There is nothing like it. Loads of fresh whole strawberries drenched in a sweet but miraculously not sticky or overwhelming sauce, living in a happy covering of fresh pie crust, and covered in a mound of fresh whipped cream. I posted a photo of my pie so you could see for yourself. Dining partner tried the peach cobbler - something in it was just missing. The peaches weren't very flavorful and the crust was slightly bland. It definitely needed some more cinnamon/ginger and perhaps some of the whipped cream, or even ice cream. I give them four stars instead of five just because of the weird ranch dressing situation, the sub-par peach cobbler, and the slow - moving line that didn't move. This place is definitely a must-stop if you are ever driving by, however. Two carryout dinners and two desserts was $23.00 - not bad, especially when most of the money you used to pay for it came from the ground.

The place has a really cool concept.. looks old school inside, and you line up like you would in a cafeteria.. but newbies beware, you gotta have your order ready to go on the spot. If you are indecisive, or have kids that just can't make up their flipping minds, it can be stressful because you'll be holding up the line. The food was delicious, but I thought it was quite pricey.

My SO and I ate here after seeing it featured on "Man vs. Food". We definitely were not disappointed! Despite the long line inside the door the wait wasn't unbearable and the food was well worth the wait. All of the pies and cakes they offer (and there are a ton!) are made in house. The food is a far cry from "fine dining" and leans more toward "just like dear old Grandma used to make". The variety of foods available was impressive and I had quite the terrible time trying to decide which items to put on my tray. The dining room is quite spacious with room enough for everyone to sit comfortably. The servers were great about checking on us often without seeming intrusive and pushy. I never had to wait for a drink refill. The price was more than reasonable for the sheer volume of food we were able to consume and we definitely left happy. Don't pass this one up, folks!

This place is way over rated and over priced. A random stop in here proved to be the last time we ever eat here. The food was lacking in taste and the people working there are completely rude, minus the nice lady that was covering our area. She offered and carried my mothers tray for her, and was very attentive to our refills.

Gray Bros. is famous for comfort food. Whether you have a fancy for their famous fried chicken, their featured Meatloaf on TV show "Man Vs. Food", Salisbury Steak, hand carved roast beef, or chicken and noodles, you are bound to leave tapping your toes and whistling Dixie. Long gone are the days of quality cafeteria-style establishments, but Gray's is holding their own with family recipes, quality menu items, and good values. Not the new kid on the block by any means, Gray's has been a landmark in Mooresville, IN since 1944. With ample banquet facilities and parking, you can take someone on a simple home-cooked dinner date or even take your entire church service with seating up to 1000 people. Grays is well known for their desserts selections made in house as well. On any given day, you can choose from hundreds of meal options and combinations. I recommend the fried chicken, mashed potatoes with beef gravy, green beans, two dinners rolls, and a hefty wedge of southern pecan pie. It will set you back about $15 in total, but you will be smiling from ear to ear for days.

I have never been to a cafeteria restaurant, this place did it excellent. Line was short, staff was friendly and not overbearing, and a vast selection of food was laid out before my eyes. There is the biggest selection of items to try, and the top picks for me were the meatloaf (simply delicious!), fried chicken (not overfried, but juicy to perfection), and strawberry pie (not too soft, too hard, or too sweet but baked just right). Staff was friendly and very helpful in getting extra utensils, refills, and with questions. Definitely a unique experience.

This is a place with a very devout following, so we were eager to check it out. Our food, particularly the pork tenderloin, was way too salty. I've noticed in reading other reviews that this is a common complaint. We split the pork tenderloin, macaroni and cheese, and scalloped potatoes and each had a slice of pie, I drank water and my boyfriend had iced tea. Our bill was close to twenty dollars which was above the value of what we are. The macaroni and cheese was good but the pie was the best part of the meal. When we got into the car to leave I remarked that I'd have been happy saving our money and just eating the pie instead of the meal. I thought it was overpriced for the quality and taste. The service staff in the dining room was nice and attentive which is a definitive plus.

Another "Indianapolis" treasure. Some of the best fried chicken and pie that you will ever eat. The portion sizes are out of control. You won't leave hungry! It's a cafeteria so watch your wallet. It's easy to spend more than you planned to spend as you walk down the cafeteria line. Vist Gray's at off-peak eating times because it is frequently very crowded. Very good food.

I freakin' love Gray Brothers. I first went with my dad a few months ago when he came to visit from out of town; he had seen the Man vs. Food show that everyone keeps referencing in his reviews, and he was DYING to try. So we drove the 45 minutes from my home in Terre Haute and had dinner. OMFG. First of all, good luck making your decisions. My dad, my boyfriend and I all had completely different things, probably 15 items total between the 3 of us, and everything was delicious. I had chicken & noodles (a little on the thin side, but tasted GREAT so whatever), mac and cheese (of which I am a whore), mashed potatoes and gravy (knock it off, I'm also a carb whore), a yeast roll and a piece of chocolate cream pie. My dad had fried chicken, corn, scalloped potatoes and a piece of cherry pie. My boyfriend had roast beef and strawberry pie and I don't remember what else. Everything was super good, and at 6pm on a Sunday night we really didn't have to wait in line. The second time we went, we'd learned the "eyes bigger than stomach" concept and in generally grabbed less food. This time I had the chicken fingers which are hand battered and yummy, but also taste suspiciously like KFC (not that this is a bad thing). I had the mac and cheese again, which somehow was BETTER than the first time. NOM. And I had Oreo cake, which was the bomb. My mom and uncle were with us this time, and they too liked everything they had. This time we went at 6pm on a Saturday night, and it was PACKED. The line was to the door, although it probably only took 10 minutes to get to the food. Service is always very good; they are excellent about offering refills and clearing the table, and the line servers are quick. My boyfriend is generally underwhelmed, for all the hype, but he is an exceptionally picky type who doesn't like anything that is "too spicy" or "too seasoned". Everyone else I've taken has been a huge fan. I would say definitely go if you are in the area!

If you're traveling through the Indianapolis area (because, let's face it, why would you be traveling TO Indianapolis ;), plan on stopping here! I knew I'd be driving from Denver to Maryland and was scoping out some places to eat along the way. Reviews on other websites convinced me that I HAD to eat here -- I wasn't disappointed! The fried chicken was the best I've had, by far. The mac and cheese wasn't but was still very good. But if and when I come back, it will be for the desserts. The selection is amazing! About half of the entire line is devoted to various cakes, pies, puddings, ice cream, etc. I'm bummed that I only selected one (the butterscotch pie, which was really good). Here's how it works: get in line and grab a tray and utensils. Desserts are displayed first and since you can't actually see far enough down the display case to see all the desserts and make a proper decision, you'll probably want to select your favorite from the first half and then another favorite from the second half. Next, you select your meat then sides (as many as you can handle). Dinner rolls and drinks are last. You pay on a per-item basis. Waitresses refill your drinks. I didn't see the hours posted on their website but I believe it was something like 11am to 9pm, 7-days a week. Next time I'm passing through Indianapolis, I'll definitely be stopping here. I might even plan on going TO Indianapolis just so I can eat here again... Were there a lot of "elderly people"? Who knows? I was too busy enjoying my dessert!

Good old Indiana home cooking! This is a great place to take the family or eat solo. (You just have to barrel thru the Betty White fan club to get in) lol. The meatloaf is amazing and sweet. The stuffed pepper was just as flavorful, and the Pumpkin Pie was the show stopper! I know that the fried chicken is on the top of everyones list here, but I was at home with the meatloaf. The service was beyond great! Something that's hard to find these days. Not once did I ever have to ask for a refill; the waitress kept my water topped off. I have to say... I wish other restaurants would take notes! These guys have the right idea!

As good as it gets for Cafateria food! this place in an oldie but a goodie. the food is excellent all the time Word of caution. You aren't going here for good service. You're getting delicious cafateria food - but you're not paying for GOOD service. If you're ok with that - the food is worth it. Don't let the lack of service get ya ddown.

I absolutely love this place. We eat here all of the time. BBQ ribs, roast pork, chicken and noodles, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roast beef, macaroni and cheese, blueberry muffins, are my favorites. Always get a slice of strawberry pie. Worth the long lines.

It's an average cafeteria style type restaurant, therefore you will predominantly dining with many other silver-haired diners. We came here after seeing it on man vs food. Spent $46 on lunch for 3 people. Not what I expected for cafeteria style food. Most of the food we got was good, not great. If I was craving home-style cooking and in the area I would go back. Or, if I had craving for something sweet and homemade tasting i'd stop by for a slice of pie. The strawberry pie is good I heard but they didn't have any so we got a slice of coconut creme pie, sugar creme, banana creme pie, and pecan pie. They were all beautiful and yummy although a little on the sweet side. For sides check out our pics....everything was a tad bit salty although that made the mac and cheese very satisfying. The fried chicken and beef and noodles were both VERY good. Not a bad restaurant to stumble upon although I would not agree that it is AMAZING like some reviewers think. The service was great as she (Paula) always made sure our drinks were refilled and our plates were cleared. Although I have one complaint....we paid with credit card at the end of the cafeteria line and there was no place to add a tip. We didn't have cash and the closest place with an ATM was not walking distance...wish we would have known to bring cash to tip. If I could have given it 3.5 stars I would of but since I didn't feel it was 4 stars it got a 3 for all the delusional people who gave it 5.

This place is great at what they do, which is home cooked comfort food. I always have the tenderloin with mashed potatoes and gravy which is delicious. Be prepared to wait in a long line if you are going on the weekend as this place is pretty popular. Their pies are very good as well.

I went here on a day with short lines, and it still wasn't worth it. The only reason I went here is because it was on the show Man V Food and the meatloaf looked delicious. I got the meatloaf, mac and cheese, and green beans. The green beans were so bad I couldn't even finish them. The mac and cheese was something I could've microwaved at home. The meatloaf was actually pretty good but definitely not worth $5. The desserts were the only bright spot. Bottom line if im going to spend $25 on a meal I don't want it to be average cafeteria food, guess I should've read the name of the restaurant before I got my hopes up.

I came for the meatloaf and they didn't offer meatloaf on Saturday! I was so looking forward to trying it. I heard it is a revelation. I did have the pork tenderloin. I was able to make three meals out of it with the left overs. The dessert is all made from scratch and the homemade taste comes through. Indianapolis people, this is worth the drive. It is very good home style hoosier cuisine.

Home cooking, delicious! If you have a line, don't fret, it moves at a good pace. I do avoid the Sunday out the door crowd, but they do have a take out on the side of the building with far less wait. Not as much of a selection, but most of the favorites!

For me Grey Brothers is a unique Indiana dining experience. There's not too many places I'd go willingly to stand in a half hour line for the equivalent of my high school lunch experience. Grey Brothers is one place that I will. The food is pretty good, similar to the type of food you'd find in a Church cookbook or something. The quantities are great and you'll leave full for sure. The downside is the line. On a Saturday night you'd think you're waiting in line for a roller coaster ride, but in reality you're waiting for a piece of 900 calorie fried chicken. Despite the wait, I still enjoy going here. Though every time I'm in line for food longer than ten minutes I contemplate heading down the street to Poe Brothers to see what they're all about.

I have been visiting this cafeteria for years and it is one my all-time favorites! The food tastes like mom just cooked it in her kitchen. Ample portions, plenty of seating, and very reasonable prices. When you see people lined up outside the door to eat here you know you are in the right place!

Yum!!! I haven't tried anything here I don't like... It's all delicious. One time I was eating their banana pie and my head literally exploded from sheer awesomeness. There's actually only one complaint I can think of: They have all the usual utensils... forks, spoons, knives... but no shovels. I would really like to eat here with a shovel.

Just about every time I drive through Mooresville, I gotta stop and get some Strawberry Pies to take home to my family. They're awesome!! Everyone once in awhile, I get the chance to actually eat there. My favorite meal is the chicken and noodles with a side of corn, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, or broccoli/cauliflower and cheese.

My parents love this place but I find it depressing. If you like hot brown food served cafeteria-style, eaten while surrounded by a bunch of elderly people who are chewing sooooo slowly that their food is probably fossilizing, then, yeah, go here. Or if you're like me and it just makes your parents super happy. This place just reminds me of my own mortality. I can't even comment on the quality of the food because that's not what I'm thinking about when I eat here. I'm just thinking about how I hope when I'm 80 I have someone to gum mashed potatoes with, unlike that lady over there eating by herself... she's got gravy on her shirt... Geez.

My family and I love going here, they have the best home cooked food around! The fried chicken is awesome and so is the strawberry pie! The lines are long but it's worth it. Cafeteria food at its finest. I know that sounds a bit odd, since the word connotes all the mystery meat and scoop of strange mashed potatoes memories of our high school times, but I think there is some kind of Hoosier or midwestern tradition of piling in the van and entering these kinds of establishments --after church on Sunday, say, or a gathering. What an array of food! All of it freshly made, so there's nothing here that's industrialized. Those spuds are real spuds in the mashed potatoes, so no fear that this stuff came out of a box. You grab your tray, and your utensils and after you have passed the dessert station first (yes!) you park yourself next to the entree station. See the whole roast beef? The fried chicken? The salmon in sauce? You need to pick one, or two or whatever, get your sides, a little gravy maybe, grab the rest to round out your meal. You gotta live once! You're gonna work all this off, right? The fried chicken is not to be missed, and looking back I should have had another piece --it was that crisp and good. The taters did not disappoint either. But what closed the deal was the slice of apple pie. Oh yeah people drive long distances for these things and I decided to keep things simple with something classic. I even took a couple of them home, packed them up for my flight back to SFO that evening. A must try right there on the way back to (or in from) the Indy airport.

This place is so great. It would be some seriously amazing drunk food. When it comes to hearty, homemade, midwestern food, this is pretty much the definition. The line was long when we went, as I'm sure it often is. I'm not sure I could just say go early because the elderly people that come surely eat dinner at 4. The good thing is that the back half of the line passes by the food displays before circling back to actually go through it, so use this time wisely to plan what you're going to get. Once you have a tray in your hand, it all moves so fast and before you know it you have 4 pieces of pie and some dinner rolls! The dessert case is first and includes some sugar-free offerings if you're into that sort of thing. Then you choose items and pay per item. It seems that one protein, 2 sides, a dinner roll, and a dessert is MORE than enough, but you can choose your own adventure here. Sidenote: I would recommend a designated driver because you're going to be in a food coma.

Every thing tasted great! The pie crust is perfect. The mac n cheese was very different and mashed potatoes were very creamy. The chicken tenders looked very juicy and the lemon pie was huge. Only three bad things Janas chicken had a few feathers on it, nothing except entres are priced and rolls are 95 cents, the bill for 3 was $47.

On a trip back to northern Indiana from Bloomington, i had to make a side trip over to Gray's after hearing so many good things about it for years. At 3 in the afternoon on a Friday, it wasn't crowded but there were more people there than I expected. I will concur with others who have said the food is salty. My 2 side dishes (green beans, and sliced potatoes) were both WAY too salty. I suppose I should have said something but I didn't. The meat loaf was excellent as was the peach cobbler which I ate there and the sugar cream pie I took home for the next day. It is definitely pricey. $30.00 for 2 people, each having an entree, 2 sides, dessert and a drink is a bit much (although I had that extra dessert included in that $30.00). At least 3 different servers kept coming by our table so, they were attentive but probably needed things to do at that hour since it wasn't too busy. I would eat there again but probably wouldn't make a special trip to do it.

I saw Gray's featured on food network a few months ago and decided I would try it when I was in Indy. I tried several different things and each item was delicious. The Pies are amazing! You must get dessert if you go. I would certianly go again. It would be fun with a large group.

I have been going to Gray Brothers for years but lately have found it to not be so good as I remember food wise. Also, they have started hand writing notes (pretty sloppy ones) in the food line and several times I have been there and they were very low on desserts. I had heard that it has been sold to someone else and if that is true and that is why it appears to be going downhill then it may not be around for much longer.

I grew up less than 10 minutes from GBC so I'm no stranger to this place. Not much has changed there in my 30+ years of memory. The decor and menu are exactly the same as was in the days when i was to small to carry my own tray. The phrase "If it's not broke, don't fix it" applies here. If you're not a meat eater this probably isn't your place (unless you're fine with filling up on sides). It's not uncommon for the line to be wrapped around the building on Sundays and holidays. Ever since I was a kid I thought the heat lights cast a strange/creepy light on the servers faces.

Oh my God!!!! This place is awesome. Had breaded tenderloin, cheesy potatoes, and butterscotch pie. Tenderloin was as big as your plate, If I wouldn't,t have been in such a hurry to eat it, I would have taken a picture. Taters were more than tasty, and the butterscotch pie...can't even find the words to describe it, and that is rare that I can't find something to say. Hubby got meatloaf, and coconut pie. Meatloaf was good, almost as good as mine, except I wrap my meatloaf in bacon, his pie was awesome as well. Waitress kept the drinks coming. Yes it is true the place was full of old farts, but they didn't chew with their mouths open, if you have a problem with this, don't stop, or stop in get a table facing the corner and listen to yourself smackin' your lips with a grin on your face.

Gray's is great. The lines are long for a reason. The decor is straight from the 70's, and the food is probably older than that. But it's delicious. If you ever need a place to eat in Mooresville, IN on a business trip, this should be the place.

Comfort food at its best. It does not get better then this when it comes to good 'ol home cooking. I am addicted to the fried chicken and have trouble ordering anything else, though I have tried the roast beef as well. Both were just amazing. My favorite sides include the green beans, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Just delicious! Then the desserts... all the desserts. The coconut cream pie has to be my favorite so far, but there are so many I have not had yet that look great! Now, this place can get busy and the line can be out the door, but don't freak out about it. There is a ton of seating and the line moves very fast. It's 100% worth the wait though!

I have lived in the Indianapolis area since 1999, and believe it or not, I have never been to this cafeteria until recently. In the interim, I had heard so much about how good of a place it is to eat,......especially how awesome their pies are. Unfortunately, the wait was just short of worth it. We went on a Thursday evening, and it was fairly busy enough. With most cafeterias it's like a cattle call,.....you stand in line, and point out what you want to eat, they put it on your plate, and you keep moving along. You then end up at the register pay for your food, and then go find a table/seat. The food service line was efficient enough, but the servers seemed to be unfocused, preoccupied and lackadaisical. I tried to ask if I could have a little whipped cream on my apple pie, and it seemed to be a miserable chore to one gal to accommodate me. We found a table after paying, and thankfully the gal who was tending the floor and checking drinks - was nice. It's always a plus when servers can muster up a smile whether they like their job or not. We got the fried chicken, because I had read on previous reviews that it was very good. I will totally concur with that assessment. Everything else was nothing to write home about - including the canned green beans, processed mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and the hush puppies. I actually had to send the hush puppies back because they a very weird/odd taste to them that I couldn't pin point. I got a refund on those. I am only giving them *** 3 stars because of the fried chicken and the delightful apple pie I had. Those two items are really what really saved them. Otherwise the rest of the menu had quite a bit to be desired. I have had similar quality and tasting food at any other food line cafeteria and/or buffet I have ever been to like - ex: Ryan's, Golden Coral, etc,... If I would have chosen a buffet style -all you can eat - restaurant, I surely would have gotten more food or choices for the all mighty dollar as well. When all was said and done, our bill came to over $30 for two people. I think that's a little high and excessive considering the quality and the amount of food that we received. You're not paying for atmosphere in that place either, that's for sure! I sure wish the value and quality would make it worthwhile when eating out these days. It's just another sad commentary to the fact that great restaurants are really far and few in between anymore. Most are just a 'slop it out at you' dime/dine a dozen. I am not sure how most good sized families can afford to eat out at family style restaurants today. It seriously costs a small fortune to do so. It just would be nice to get something satisfying and worthwhile for one's money for a change.

Honestly for me, it's the best cafeteria in the Indianapolis area by far. This place screams Midwestern comfort food! The desserts are in the beginning so they tempt you from the start. I would recommend sticking with the Fried Chicken and the sides are great! My favorite side would have to be the cheesy potatoes (Au gratin I think..), you can taste the real potatoes... Some of the cons are that the lines are usually long and it's hard to figure out how much everything will cost until they ring you up at the cash register. I usually try to eat here after an airport trip since it's somewhat close to the west side.

As a gal not from the midwest, I was excited by this homespun, folksy vision I had about eating at a cafeteria-style restaurant for the first time. There'd be nanas and big portions and charm and carbohydrates galore... I went to Gray Brothers with a group of mostly other yankees hopped up on the promise of finding charming old ladies and comfort food. The portions are standard. The faire is basic comfort food. There is pie, lots of pie (they make you aware of it as soon as you get in line.) I took in a lot of gluttonous smells but for health conscious reasons stayed away from the dense macaroni and cheese, gravy flooded mashed potatoes, and the offering of cheese sauce for my cauliflower and broccoli. My dining companions (adults and kids) went full steam ahead with their food choices. I got the grilled chicken + veggie skewers (no rice,) beets (I didn't realize they were candied,) and that cheeseless side of broc. + cauli. The rest of table ordered fried chicken, buttered and bacon-ed green beans, macaroni and cheese, taters, deviled eggs, biscuits, chocolate cake, and pie. The consensus was that the foods tasted ok, nothing memorable. The same was agreed on about the service. Just ok. For two, the cost was around $20. It is all a la carte so you can spend more or less depending on your appetite. Nothing really stood out as a place I need to rush back to. PS. The pie LOOKS great. Tall with mounds of whipped cream or meringue. Globs of berries in berry goo. Butterscotch pie? They all looked really tempting and delicious. PSS. There were nanas there.

We don't have cafeteria restaurants like this in NJ. We were coming back from Indy when my friend veered off the highway when he spotted the Cafeteria sign. The parking lot was packed so we guessed it was a winner. We asked a sliver haired lady at the door if the food was good. She said to try the chicken livers... Hmmm, ok maybe not the best 411 but we went in. We walked about 100 feet to get to the end of the line, passing racks and racks of good looking food. The cavernous interior was filled with AARP members - well dressed and all silently eating good home cooking. I tried the acre wide pork tender loin with mashed potatoes and a carrot cake slab on the side. The mashed was great, the pork tenderloin was huge - bigger than the plate. However, the breaded coating was way too salty. The cake was good but so huge I left some on the plate. This is another good home cooking place that I wish was near my house. Recommended.

Good comfort food, served cafeteria-style. You know when there are over 90 reviews for a restaurant in Mooresville, it must be pretty good, right? Well, it is. Everything I've eaten here has been very good, but especially the fried chicken and mashed potatoes. One thing to note, though, is that if you're looking for "healthful" food, you should probably eat somewhere else. This is gut-bomb, stick-to-your-ribs cuisine, and even the plain vegetables are served with a healthy dousing of salt. Every time I leave here, I need to chug a water bottle afterward because everything is so salty. Salty in a good way, but salty nonetheless.

I should preface that I'm not a huge fan of huge portions. So that is a large part of why I reviewed with only 4 stars. The second is that I just wasn't blown away by the food. It was a little like that something that I remember from my great grandmas house. So it is definitely good down home cooking. I would say don't leave without pie. You will regret it.

In my mind, a line out the door and sometimes filling out into the parking lot can never be a bad thing. This line situation has ALWAYS been the case, and I've been coming here since I was little girl when trips home from grandmas on I-70 meant taking a detour off the interstate to Gray Brothers Cafeteria. The lines may be long, but the place is huge, there are at least 3 very large rooms for dining, so don't worry about not being able to get a seat. The wait staff is friendly and will help carry your trays, bring you drink refills, etc. Gray's certainly has the best tasting cafeteria food I've ever had. If I didn't go through the line looking at all the options myself, I would have thought someone's grandma or mom was back there serving up all of these home cooking favorites. Obviously, the strawberry pie is iconic. It is good, a little sweet and syrupy for me. I like the sugar cream pie better personally. And again, obviously, the fried chicken is also iconic. But that is finger licking good. Sometimes I opt for the chicken strips because I find them easier to eat - but all of their chicken is tasty. As are all of their meat and fish entrees I've tried. Now for the sides. THE SIDES. I am a mac n cheese expert, let me tell you, and this is the BEST I'VE EVER HAD. Perfection. I wish I could get that for my entree. The mashed potatoes and gravy are great, the green beans are great, the corn is great, heck, even the broccoli is great. If I haven't convinced you to come here by now, I'm not sure if it will ever happen. But if your mouth is watering even a little bit after reading this review, I highly suggest making your way down to Mooresville, Indiana and heading to Gray's. It is worth the drive. Promise.

We were in Indianapolis for the NCAA Final Four and heard about Gray Brothers Cafeteria via the 'Man vs. Food' website. We drove 30 minutes to get there from downtown Indianapolis and we were not disappointed. All too often, buffets or cafeteria food can take on a bland quality. That is certainly not the case at Gray Brothers. There was a line of about 20 people upon our arrival but the line moves quickly. The selection is almost overwhelming. Everything looked delicious and everything we tried was definitely delicious. The price was reasonable and the staff was very friendly. If I am ever back in this area again, I will definitely return for another meal. There are so many other things I would like to try. We talked about the food for the rest of our visit to the area. It was certainly memorable. The coconut pie was incredible and I would certainly like to know what "mystery ingredient" I detected in the coconut filling. It was top shelf! Gray Brothers Cafeteria is home-cooked comfort food at its finest.

Always good home cooked style food. Fresh and hot. The only problem here an be the line going out the door. It is well worth the wait.

Sometimes there's long lines to eat at this cafeteria style restaurant, but it worth it. The food is very good, average sized portions, a bit expensive, but a nice place to go eat on various occasions. Reminds me of the great cafeterias of when I was a child traveling with my parents, back when cafeterias served very good food. Well, this place did and still does serve very good food! Come try it and see for yourself.

Gray Brothers is a staple in Mooresville. Several entree and side choices make it easy to find something for everyone. Gray's is very-well known for their pies, and I highly recommend the rhubarb. Gray's also has signs denoting that they serve everyone, and it is obvious by their pleasant personalities eager to assist. I will note that you are likely to spend $15+ dollars a person if you get an entree, two sides and a drink, add to that any salad and a must-have pie, and you are into $20 a meal. It might seem slightly expensive for what some perceive as "cafeteria food". It is well worth it though. Gray's is also known throughout Indiana as one of the top five places for fried chicken, and I would concur.

Ever since I moved to the Mooresville area this is al I've heard about. I don't even know where to begin. First tip: a 12 hour fast might not hurt before going here because you're going to get a TON of food. Second tip: if you're a health nut, this might not be the best choice but for those times when you want to indulge in some good Indiana style comfort food- this is the place to go. I love the old Germanic style interior of the place. Large exposed wooden beams are the best. Quaint and farm-style decor makes me feel like the building itself is giving me a big comforting hug. Then there's the actual line of options. They start with dessert!!!!!! Massive pieces of cakes and pies. Pick one, pick 5, pick none..it's up to you! Plenty of fries proteins to choose from and fried catfish if that's more up your alley. You can get steamed talapia if you want to be a little healthier. They have small side salads too. The sides are plentiful as well! Mac n cheese is my favorite. The potatoes are creamy, smooth and buttery. It's Paula Deen heaven!! I ate myself into a coma and it was glorious. This place is not for the faint of heart but it's one heck of a tradition around these parts!

Not a fan of cafeteria food so I will go easy on this place since it is well liked by the elderly masses. The average age of the customers is probably close to 65. The staff is efficient and there are a decent amount of menu choices. Not impressed with the quality of the food. The pies look better than they taste. Didn't try the fried chicken, but wish I had since it looked golden crispy and smelled delicious.

Well, I can understand it's appeal to very old people with the comfort food selection, but I think this place has seen better days. The restaurant has an OBVIOUS and DEAL-BREAKING sewer problem under the restaurant. If they can't or won't fix this, then what is the reality of the kitchen cleanliness? Does Mooresville have a Department of Health? If so, are they paid off? Besides that, some food was cold and some food was dried out. Sure, steam tables are tricky. That's not my problem, it is theirs. If my parents want to eat there again (they routinely meet relatives there), then I will take them, drop them off, eat at ANYPLACE else in the area, and then pick them up. Yes, Yelp, the below photo was helpful; it was the breaded fish in the first picture that was not up to temperature.

I know I have an unpopular opinion on this place, but I don't see what the hype is all about. I went with a couple co-workers for lunch and was disappointed. I got pork roast, which was dry; stuffing, which was oddly sweet; green beans, which were just okay; and a salad, which was basically iceberg lettuce with one cherry tomato and some chopped onions. The salad was piled into a little bowl, and each time I took a forkful, it ended up spilling onto the table. Eventually, I just gave up on it. I picked at my food and left still feeling hungry. This place is known for their desserts, especially pie, but I didn't get any because I'm not a dessert person. So I could be missing out there, but I don't feel compelled to go back just to try dessert.

Delicious and generously sized foods. The waiter was bad. He ignored our requests to get a to go box for a while and didn't clean up a drink spill well. It's no surprise this is a very busy establishment, seeing how good the food is.

I've liked this place since I was about 5, when my grandparents, family & I would drive over from Terre Haute for the "best cafeteria offerings in Indiana" (& there were many back then). The line, which is still long at times (because it's worth it), seemed to go on forever at that age. As a kid, I probably had the fried chicken (which still looks delicious), but now I enjoy the baked fish. The desserts are, typically, clearly made from scratch and delightful. Yet the pudding today seemed as though it came from a can? Oh well - everything else was wonderful!

Above average comfort food, the fried chicken is excellent, as well well as the freshly carved roast beef, even the sides are above average. The Mac and cheese and green beans were great! . And they have fresh baked pies and dinner rolls. I would highly recommend this place.

I finally got to try this place out yesterday for lunch, and I couldn't be more ecstatic that I did. I can definitely say that Gray Brothers lives up to it's reputation, without a doubt. I think if there's a line of gray hairs waiting when a place opens, you know it's going to be good. And that's exactly what Gray Brothers had. When I walked in I was in food heaven. The longest line of comfort food I have ever seen was right there before my eyes, and I honestly just wanted to take a moment and enjoy the view. BUT my stomach returned me to reality and I proceeded along the line. I got meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, a yeast roll, and cherry pie. #dontjudgeme My first bite was heavenly, and every bite thereafter was just as delicious. The meatloaf was great, but the sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking. I had a bit of my friends fried chicken, and that was definitely what I would get on my next visit. The mashed potatoes and white gravy were great, but the showstopper was the mac n cheese. I'm very picking when it comes to mac n cheese, and I'm a sucker for a box of Velveeta shells and cheese. So I was a bit nervous to try the much adored mac n cheese. But it was instant love. I could've probably had an entire plate devoted to it, it was THAT good. I definitely say they get stars for atmosphere, portion size, excellent service, and overall quality of food. My only reason for holding back from star #5 is that I wish it had been a buffet so I could've tried it all :)

The stars are closer to a 2.5 rather than a 3, one word Salt! Split the pork tenderloin with my Mom since it was so large. Between the two of us, we went through a pitcher of water due to the amount of salt in the tenderloin. Asked the waitress if all the food had this much salt in it, her answer was yes. Our response, was really... and complete disappointment. The one thing that made it all better was PIE! We both had a slice of pie for dessert since I had raved about the slice of Gray's coconut cream pie that I had at my churches festival. One word to describe their pies is Devine! Saying that, I have been here several times to get carry-out pies, but have never stayed long enough to eat. Due to the above experience, until they cut out the amount of salt in there food, I'll definitely will only come back for the pie. If the pie wasn't apart of the equation, the amount of Stars value would be closer to a 1.5.

Drove directly from the airport to Grays and its every bit as good as i remember it. Had noodles like mom used to make, mashed potatoes, green beans, and split a piece of sugar cream pie and a strawberry pie. Is that ridiculous? You bet! Am I ashamed? NO WAY! Grays is just plain good food. Yum!

Wow there are a lot of old people here during the day. Lol So the place is massive, I expect there to be a ton of people after church. The place is served cafeteria style where you grab a tray and you walk down the food assembly line. I went safe and got the fried chicken, the chicken was nice and juicy but was a tad bland. The Mac and the stuffing were abysmal. The strawberry pie was nice, the strawberries were nice and sweet and the dough was light and crisp. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
