Can't say a thing about the food the drinks are good and the service is slow. What I really like is that I have a place for my dog to lay down while I eat and drink. 'Nuff said!

Excellent food and service! I really enjoyed the carne asada. Generous servings, more than reasonable prices, and fun atmosphere before shopping at the outlets!

Went here with Co-workers for dinner, it was not awesome. Not by a long shot. The waiter acted like it was his first day on the job. He stuck his fingers in our glasses when bringing our drinks. Gross but we didn't say anything. My starter salad was limp and clearly had lettuce past it's prime. Chicken sandwich was meh. No one in our group of 5 liked their food. Oh and all the condiments are never refrigerated even if the bottle clearly says they should be. Yeah I asked. Also it's December and of the 3 bottles of mustard on the table all were expired. One has been expired for 9 months. STAY AWAY from this place.

Love this place. Nice friendly service. Nice friendly atmosphere. Our group tried several appetizers and they were all real delicious! The staff is very knowledgeable, and have tons of cool beers on draft. Highly recommend it!

The unique menu brings me back to McGinnis almost every time I'm in MC. The atmosphere is fabulous too (especially the outdoor seating, including a gorgeous fireplace), and the servers are total professionals. I love the Trek-a-Bouts, Rasher Bites, Bangers and Mash Guinness Stew, and Irish Soda Bread to name a few. They always have great drink specials and contests/raffles/giveaways. Last time we were there, the bartender was raffling off a sweet, old-school Jameson cooler. The kind with the metal lock and handles, like the old Coleman coolers from the '70s. Too bad we didn't win, but we felt like champions when we got a free shot of Jameson just for being awesome. If you happen to be in Michigan City for the dunes, the beach, or the outlet mall, a drink and a meal at McGinnis is a must.

I really didn't want to write this review, because my last review was negative and I don't want to be negative!!! But my mom and I went here today. We were going shoe shopping at Urban Soles. Awesome shoe shop. Anyhow. We ordered a very basic lunch. I ordered a corned beef sandwich which I was assured was house made. It wasn't. It actually tasted like wet dog. My mom got a taco salad. After 1 hour ( and I know absolutely because I looked at a text message time my sister sent me as we were ordering) I finally asked the waitress about our order. I have worked front and back of the house so it's rare that I actually inquire about service. Astoundingly, Abby. The server. Had the nerve to lie to my face and tell me it had been only 18 minutes since we placed our order. My mom and I were just super flushed and shocked at such a bold lie. I said to her in no uncertain terms that it had been 1 hour. So she then doubled down and brought her order tab which I guess has the time. Which I am sure was 18 minutes prior, because she forgot to input it!! I just said thank you because there is no winning with a person like that. Look. I would hate my life if I lived in Michigan City, Indiana as well... But at least don't be an awful server.

I had the Reuben sandwich which had brown meat instead of corned beef. My son had a tough chicken sandwich. The waitress lacked basic wait training. For a local resident, McGinnis Pub will not be on our repeat list. TF local

Food poisoning- My condolences to anyone else who got sick after eating here on Black Friday. 3 out of 4 of us became violently ill after a meal here. One of us(the 8 year old) didn't eat any of the same items the rest of us did. So it was clearly some kind of sanitary issue in the kitchen. The shepherds pie looked like a plate of puke and I can't tell you how glad I am that I didn't eat any of it.

Other than the owner coming over to apologize and offer to comp our entire meal, McGinnis pub was a poor choice for our family this Mother's Day. The waitress actually got up in my face and accused me of belittling her when I was simply asking what was talking so long. Couples who came after us were being served. And it had been over an hour since we sat down with an almost empty restaurant at 1:20 pm. We left with out being served and hungry.

Nice selection of beers and really good food. Nice touch that they have some vegetarian friendly items. Loved the veggie burger. Nice older building with lots of charm and a patio with gas fireplace. Great wait staff. Separate bar area and small dining area.

service sucks!!!!!! we have been waiting over 45 minutes for our simple order of a sandwich and nachos! when we asked the waitress when we can expect our order she repiled" the whole outside is full so we are just waiting"..... what the heck does outside have to do with my order....this place is rediculous.....too bad i'm hungry enough to stay. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

one word: NO Small cramped dining area, even more cramped of a bar that doubles as a hang out for the staff, belligerent, confrontational owners.

Mediocre food and service. Potential for a nice patio experience but was rather dirty and disorganized. I won't be back.

Seems like a place that would be the go to for people from Michigan city, but its really hard to get past smoking inside the bar. The chili had clearly been microwaved, and not log enough, at that -- it came out at maybe 100 degrees. Blech... High point: they has bells two hearted. Which is good enough for three stars in my book.

Good food. Straight forward, irish flare. Salad was above average, nice dressing choice. Comfortable restaurant, a little smokey near the bar. I am looking forward to a return visit.

Overall, a solid pub. I was really impressed with the fish and chips. The batter was crispy and seasoned well. The caesar was neatly overdressed, and the artichoke dip burger was satisfyingly over the top in beef grease and cheese. Wash it wall down with a great bear on tap, and you have a wonderfully lazy afternoon.

This year I decided to do something different for my birthday; I took Metra to Michigan City to meet my mother and grandmother (whom I seldom see) for the day. I scoured Yelp the night prior, trying to find someplace decent enough for dinner and chose McGinnis Pub. The rating wasn't bad (not bad doesn't translate into good, as I've learned) and they have a full bar. My two stars are for two things: the Harp on draft was well priced and I got my drink in a timely manner. The bathroom was also very clean (which indicates one of two things, usually: that they also have a clean kitchen or that they don't get much business and it's seldom been used). To start, I ordered a cup of shrimp bisque. It was extremely bland (I couldn't even get fresh pepper for it and had to suffice with stale pepper dust out of a diner style shaker on the table), the waitress sloshed it down the side of the cup with barely a muttered apology, and considering both the cup and saucer were very hot added to the fact that they'd run out of the original soup du jour, it was obvious this soup was out of a can and had been thrown in the microwave. It was horrid. For my entree, I got the Jameson chicken with a side of rice and grilled veggies. The veggies were cold and I'd be surprised if they'd ever seen a grill; the blackened lines seemed to be painted on with soot. Or they'd been grilled in a huge batch days previously and thrown in a microwave on "reheat". The rice wasn't fully cooked. The grilled chicken breast was not fresh and had the toughness you can only achieve from throwing frozen meat onto a grill. But the worst detail was the Jameson gravy, which was obviously a generic mushroom gravy that had been sitting under a heat lamp for far too long. It was too thick, flavourless, and I wouldn't even feed it to my cats. Our waitress was either incompetent or newly hired and not fully trained. She spilled my soup, my grandmother's coffee, and splashed water on the table when filling our glasses (which she was not prompt about). When the people at the next table asked what the house red was, she had no idea. Shameful. In summary I would never eat at this establishment again nor would I recommend it to anyone I intended to keep as a friend.

Like Garnet S. mentions in her review. I too was headed to Michigan City and needed a dinner place to meet a good friend. It's hard to find reviews for this town on any website and most of the finer dining places are outside of town and closed on Sundays. Unless of course you want to eat at the Blue chip casino. (Bleh) Driving from the outlet mall, McGinnis was within sight, filled with mostly senior customers it looked homely enough for a good time. When I walked in with my gal pal you could hear a pin drop. I have to guess that they don't see many colored people or Indian people. Or maybe they were wondering if we were an interracial couple; who knows. Weirdos. I hate that bumble fuck Egypt look some distant towns give to outsiders. This is Michigan city, not Las Vegas, Co, some random town in a booney place of a small populated state. Our waitress looked just like Veronica from the Archie Comics, I wanted to take her home with me, but couldn't. Moving on, we both had the Guinness stew with Irish soda bread. Excellent, right amount of potatoes and meat and a tasty stew indeed. Soda bread had raisins in it, which I didn't favor much, but my gap pal said it's great with the butter they offer. This and a couple glasses of Riesling and the night was set. They played some strange music, stuff from Barry Manilow to Frank Sinatra and then to Guns n' roses. It's an Irish pub inside of what used to be someones home. On the side they have a nice space for their beer garden. Since the area is between what used to be a thriving downtown and the outlet mall, it's pretty quiet out there without any passing traffic. This area isn't bustling with business, so restaurants of value are hard to find. One thing which was of a constant bother were the fruit flies. There were many and while you're engrossed in conversation over food and drink.. it's gross and bothersome.

Last night was my second trip this restaurant. My first trip it was extremely busy, but our food came out in a timely manner and the service was great. Last night I decided to go again. When we walked in it was almost completely empty, which surprised me since it was only 7 pm. There were a few people at the bar and a table of four seated near the back. First off, no one came to seat us, a worker popped his head out from behind the bar and told us to sit wherever we wanted. So, we picked a seat in the front room where I'd sat before on my last visit and we waited for our server. We could clearly hear everyone in the other room and bar area laughing, drinking, and eating. But no one came to our table to bring us menus. We even saw a few workers look at us as they went outside to have a smoke, but I guess no one cared. So, after about twenty minutes of waiting we just left. I find it totally disrespectful that no one even bothered to serve us. I even checked their website and it clearly stated that the kitchen was open until 9 and the bar stayed open well after that. I'm not sure why we were completely ignored but I do know that I was the only black person in the restaurant and the staff treated me and my party like we were invisible. Definitely not going back there again and will tell all my friends, family, and co-workers to avoid the place.

It kind of hurts me to only give 3 stars and I will likely revisit the restaurant and update this review at a later time. WITH THAT SAID: We have been to this restaurant several times, I am CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY about the Bloody Mary Bar......it's AMAZING and SUCH a fantastic idea! The food we've had has been okay (nothing to write home about but not BAD, just unimaginative). Today's visit really left me angry and VERY disappointed. It's Labor Day, the place was dead save for a few people sitting at the bar drinking and one table outside on the patio of 2 people. My Husband and I came in and sat at the high-tops behind the bar, our waitress had only us to deal with. We asked about beers on draft and her English made it difficult for her to communicate those with us. We just ordered bottles of Irish Cider (to make things easy) and then ordered dinner. Hubby ordered the burger (it was okay, he said) and I ordered Guinness stew. We got our drinks and fries quickly enough. Dinner came shortly after and what she brought for me was Shepherds Pie (which I hate with a screaming passion from any restaurant, even people's homemade stuff - hate). We were starving and on a schedule to get home so I tried........I couldn't do it. I sent it back, had it removed from the bill and left (hungry). Our waitress was more irritated than apologetic. She said she thought I said "shepherds pie" not 'Guinness Stew" and huffed off. I like this place, this visit kind of hurt me because I expect better. If you can't communicate and understand English clearly I don't think food service is a great career choice, AND if you are going to continue to stay in food service and you know you don't understand people very well, accusing them of ordering the wrong thing MIGHT not be the best way to handle that kind of situation. If I spoke Spanish maybe I could have communicated better with her but I don't. I am hoping for a redemption visit soon.

Lovely outdoor seating area! However, the food is hit or miss. Although, the appetizers are usually a safe bet. Drinks are strong and a good variety of beer on tap.

I'm ok giving this place one star because I thought my food was pretty good (however that wasn't the opinion of everyone in my party) but I would be happy giving it no stars. The inside was sweltering in the middle of summer so either there is no a/c or they decided not to run it even though there was clearly a need. There was seating outside, so that was a good option and much cooler. The service was absolutely terrible, almost the worst I have ever encountered. Our waitress was rude and horribly impatient. There was a table full of overly intoxicated people seated next to us and during the middle of our dinner one of those individuals came up to us and in an EXTREMELY condescending tone said that we needed to move our vehicle immediately so that the owner's van parked in an alleyway could get out, that it was the vehicle of her designated driver. My mom, unhappily, walked away from her dinner and moved our car, and that van never moved from the alley. Our service actually diminished further and by the end of our dinner we were all very unhappy, felt very uncomfortable and were more than ready to leave. A very sad disappointment, especially since the place came recommended and we were visiting from out of state.

The food is good, but the service and atmosphere are great! An old house turned pub, it is homey and comfortable. There is a stone outdoor dining area with a fireplace. They have a nice menu and bar, but best yet, they drive you home if you are too drunk to drive yourself! Love it!

I practically live here, and have been accused of it by my peers, but I absolutely love the place. They always have something going on, whether it be a live music venue, or trivia night. I always come here late at night for beers with my bros, but sometimes wander in early enough to catch a meal, and my god, they are good. The salads are big enough for 2 people, and delicious to boot. The wait staff is very friendly and full of smiles. The bartenders know their drinks and won't hesitate to help you decide on what to get. The owners are always around mingling with the patrons and regulars and everybody seems to get along great. It is a smaller place, and my only complaint is that the parking situation isn't always the best, but if you do find yourself unable to get a spot, you can park around the corner on the street, in front of Arturo's. There's a great beer and drink selection here, and the menu just rocks. Their Bangers & Mash are phenomenal along with their soda bread. Go to McGinnis Pub and have a great time in a nice little city by the lake.

Not a bad place for Michigan City. I met the owner there one night and he was super nice and talkative. They probably have the best Guinness around-it's poured absolutely perfect! It takes a bit, but it's a proper pint, not like when you go to some hilljack bar an they give you a Guinness with a 3 inches of head because they don't have the tap set right. Make sure you join the Guinness club if you go there once in awhile. Nice and small and cozy- it's in a old house, aye! The food is ok though... I'm a veggie.

McGinnis is new to Michigan City, and they have done a nice job of decorating this pub with irish scenes, dart board and an outside area in time for the summer. On our first and only visit so far, we had trouble enjoying our meal because of the obnoxiously load group of seven shoppers on break from the Lighthouse Mall, just across the street. Food was above average pub grub, but service was a bit spotty for what is not a very big place. All in all, we will be back, more for the pub than the grub.

Really greasy food. The fish inside the breading was good but the greasy breading made it taste really poor. Portions are good but I feel so sick from the grease I can't give more than 2 stars

We were headed to the Lighthouse when I spotted this place. I wanted something unique and I got it. It is a tavren in an old house. I keep forgetting that you can still smoke in Indiana. How Rude! We were seated right away. It had a bunch of locals in it, that were having a blast that had continued from the night before. The menu had a lot of fancy things that you would not expect from a pub in Michigan City. I had a feeling that I should stick with something easy. I was correct. The 7oz burger was really tasty. But they forgot to melt the cheese on mine. My friend had the same thing, but they melted his? The seasoned fries tasted like Dorito sticks. Not to my taste but they were gobbled up. I did notice that this place was spotless. Including the washroom. My only problem as with the dumb waiter. They did all the cooking on the second floor so they had to pull it up and down. The rope that they used looked like something you had your dog tied to in the back yard. Then I looked at our waitress bringing our food with the same hands that she just yanked with. Not very appetizing!

Good food and beer but don't come at lunch looking for real Irish food. Sadly they suffer the same problem as lots of Irish pubs in that their beers are Irish but the food mostly isn't. Their Sully sandwich was tasty as are their bangers and mash. The atmosphere is good and they have a nice patio. I just wish I could more Irish food in the middle of the day.

Excellent beer and good food. We came once for brunch and the Irish Breakfast was out-stand-ing. Perfectly delish. The rest of the menu is quite good. Love the addition of the outdoor seating. Kid friendly with a nice kid's menu. This place is a gem. Keep it up!

This is a homey Irish Pub with good, inexpensive, and authentic pub food. A great atmosphere and decor and friendly efficient service. Where else can you get soup and a salad for $4.00? For the summer there is a large outdoor patio with a fireplace. It is located just across the street from Lighthouse Place, the local discount shopping mall and close to downtown Michigan City. Also a short walk to the South Shore train from Chicago and South Bend. McGinnis hosts daily activities, frequent special events, music on Wednesdays and Saturdays and celebrates Irish holidays. Kevin and Terry McGinnis lead a PubTour to Ireland each year in February which is great fun. The only way it is not like an Irish Pub is that they allow smoking - which would not happen in Ireland!

Went to McGinnis for a late lunch and bloody marys on a Saturday. It's a DIY bloody mary bar. It would be nice if they charged a flat fee vs for each glass, plenty of other places follow this model and knock the price down a few dollars, especially since they're using well vodka and you (the consumer) are doing all the 'labor' of making the drink. Overall, the drinks were average. Everything else left a lot to be desired. We walked in and circled the dining area twice before someone came and asked 'if we were there to eat,' so they could sit us. Decided to sit outside since it was a nice day. They have mostly six-top tables outside, and the very few two-tops didn't have umbrellas. Waited the better part of 15 minutes for our first drinks to come. Food took about 40 mins easily. I had the grilled portabella sandwich. For one, it's not grilled, it was definitely cooked in a skillet. The mushroom itself was soggy (due to the massive amounts of oil used to cook it). The peppers and onions weren't grilled as advertised on the menu, they were sautéed and drenched in oil. In the end it was an oily, drippy, mess of a sandwich on ciabatta. The sweet potato fries were okay, it's hard to mess those up, though both were cold. My friend had the turkey club. Oddly enough this was overly oily as well. Not sure if the service was garbage because a world-cup game was on (though five people were sitting at the bar/seating area inside) or what. Regardless, not the best food I've had in MC. Would possibly re-visit, just would try something different.

Interesting place with interesting food and interesting drinks. Interesting, interesting. But the waitress didn't know what IPA stood for and asked the bar tender. The prime rib on pretzel bread was excellent along with chicken avocado. Never had "bob's your uncle" on draft until today. Would go again.

FAMILY FRIENDLY, cute ,charming and good hearty food. All the food was good, the iced tea was good, and the service was very friendly, if a bit slow. Cool looking bar and nice outdoor patio eating area.

What is going on up in here? I made the unfortunate call to take the inlaws out to dinner at McGinnis this past Sunday. Now, if you know this area you know that decent options are limited. We've been here several times and always left pleased. As we were waiting for our meal, a group that was on the patio came inside and just overtook the place. They were way overserved, loud and obnoxious. What few tables there were all turned around to see just what was up, since they were the only thing you could hear. That was when I realized by the shirts that they were wearing, they were the McGinnis softball team. They were right at the bar hamming it up with the bartender and would not be denied in their efforts to ruin the night for every other customer here including the poor couple next to us that appeared to be on a date. There was no attempt made to quiet them down, cut them off, apologize for their display or show them the door. It seemed business as usual. We couldn't get out of here quickly enough. My wife even told the server to not let them drive home as they were clearly over the limit. I've never seen that kind of unchecked behavior even in a dive bar. As walking billboards for this pub, I can only think that behavior is endorsed here and see mention of it in a previous review. Perhaps if you want other patrons maybe drop off a case of Natty Light at the field for your team. They've got this saying in Tennessee. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...won't get fooled again.

Nice stop before heading onto Lighthouse Place for shopping. Food is decent and priced fairly. Wait staff was friendly and quick. Nice patio area outside, however we sat inside to avoid any possible cigerette smoke. Would recommend.

It's a standard Irish themed pub and restaurant. Menu is short and sweet with good prices, a few exclusive items, and some novelties. Dining room for families, a medium sized bar for us drinkers. Beer selection is typical for this type of place, think InBev products with Guinness & Harp. Outdoor seating appears very cozy. There are one or two other "Irish Pubs" around town, and if you're coming from Chicago, where this model is done to death, then there is nothing to see here, but for the area I think it's a pretty good place, seems clean and professionally run. Wait staff was pleasant and prompt. Food came out quick! We'll certainly go back. This place is right across the street from the outlet mall, so it may be a good place for weary shoppers (or bored husbands) to escape too. Don't forget to checkout the meat store across the street for some awesome beef jerky.

Where to start with McGinnis Pub...this place has established itself over the past few years as one of the primetime spots here in good ol' mich city. Sometimes when I need to get away from Anne and the kids and the Mancave just isn't doing it for me, I head over to see my friends at McGinnis Pub Since I've been so many times, I'll recap my recent experience from last Saturday. I came up here with Anne and the kids. We were promptly seated at our table. I requested a seat where I can see the tv from the bar so I could see the Bloomington Edge game (Champions Professional Indoor Football League - CPIFL - for those not in the know). But they didn't have Fox-Sports Midwest in their TV package. Not a big deal, but I was a little steamed. But all was forgotten when up walked our server, Kayla. Kayla had legs for days and an ass that just wouldn't quit. I could NOT STOP STARING. And Anne could not help but notice. Needless to say she took the kids and told me I can find my own ride home. I figured I could either start walking home or see where the night takes me. So I told Kayla I would be spending the rest of my night up at the bar. She seemed really puzzled by the whole situation, but I left her a couple Thomas Jeffersons for her troubles. I walked over and had a seat at the bar. Everyone was really friendly. They had 2 bartenders working and these girls were both 10's so that's always nice. I wanted to take both of them home with me but with Anne already pissed at me, I decided I wouldn't even try tonight (You know, as a matter of fact, I would go ahead and say every girl that works in this place is at least a solid 9. Great job by whoever is doing the hiring here). I proceeded to down beer after beer. Had some of their dan-o fries, top notch. I had also had the Mcginnis burger. So on-point, bold flavors, phenoms. Probably the best burger in Michigan City. So after my night was over, I was about 9 beers deep and got the bad news that the Edge lost. It was bar closing time and I was left wondering how the hell I was gonna get home. I asked the bartender for a phonebook to look up a can company when up walked Mr McGinnis himself. The owner of this joint. He told me that the pub offers complimentary shuttle service home for their patrons. Made my night and solidified this as the best bar in Mich City.
