Nautical themed restaurant/bar near the lake. The food was really good. We got salad, prime rib, baked potato, fish (eh, not so good), seasoned waffle fries, & the sampler appetizer platter. Our favorite appetizer was by far the Extremers. I had never heard of them & maybe you haven't either. They are seafood (shrimp/crab) & mildly spicy cheese fries in a batter. I would go back just for those. My steak came & it was huge & delicious. The portions are generous & we even took home leftovers. I also had a strawberry daiquiri. It was made to perfection. The price was what you would expect for a sit down restaurant. Our waitress was very nice & regularly checked on us. She was attentive & made sure everything was to our liking.

I went into this place with a couple of pals for some cocktails on a Friday night. Place has a nautical theme which is spot on since this place is a dive. Personally experiencing the Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" style of service would have been an improvement over Matey's. They have an excellent way of ignoring you and then when they do acknowledge you; make you feel like you have just inconvenienced them for trying to keep their business going - lot's of sighing and rolling of the eyes. If you're not a "townie" - expect to be ignored and/(or) treated like garbage. The best was witnessing some "of age" twenty something year olds fighting out on the deck area. Two guys were watching and instigating and I was waiting for someone to start saying, "World Star, World Star, World Star!!!!!" as they were fighting. Security was not present. After about a minute of fighting, the bartender came around to split up the two gals fighting. Rather than kick them both out; he opted to just separate them. Needless to say I was packing a pistol myself while I was in this dump. Also needless to say is I will not be going back. If you're into getting obnoxiously intoxicated and fighting; this place is good for you though. Maybe they should scrap the nautical theme and add a trailer park theme and the 'wife beater' wearing clientele will fill in the rest. Be warned.

Fun place. You can make a meal from the cajun seafood soup! The Sun-Tues specials for $13 are a great deal, portion was perfect as we were traveling & couldn't deal with leftovers. Draft Beer choice wasnt long but it was good. Staff was very friendly.

I would have loved to try their food however they discriminate! 21 and over only?!? Even on Monday for lunch? Ridiculous. When I called and asked their hours they failed to mention the 21 and over rule. I could understand if it was a bar only and not a restaurant. I will not visit this establishment on the future. Also it's was really classy t have the cook sitting by the dumpster smoking and spitting on the ground as we pulled up.

had a ball. all i can say is voodoo baby! get you one! What a great drink. The wings are huge and delicious. The hamburgers are good. Three levels of partying. Great views from atop

My friend and I stopped here after checking out the old lighthouse at Michigan City's beachfront. We wanted some libations and boy did we find them! The staff was young and friendly and generous with their pours. We each had a purple drink that involved grape vodka with lemon/lime soda. It was sweet but good! We also tried the Go Bananas! drink: Cruzan Banana Rum, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Frangelico Liqueur, yummy ice cream and our special banana mix. Yummy! For food, we ordered the Shrimp and Crab Extremers: A basket full of delicious nuggets of shrimp, crab & cheese, with bits of jalapeno pepper, and the Grouper Tenders. Both were fried pieces of deliciousness. Sat and chatted with a Kiwi couple for a bit and had a great time before moving on for a more substantial dinner! Can't complain about that Tiki Deck! :)

This local establishment became a conference favorite as word spread quickly about a cool local place near the convention center. Atmosphere was casual and entertaining. Open air seating . Adult only. Great staff. Bar food and seafood at fair prices. We had the seafood platter and everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The coleslaw is one of the best I have ever eaten. The batter for the fish was light and crispy. It's right next to the beach and it looks like it belongs there

Just ok. The Perch basket was definitely a plus! Too smokey. Saw someone throw up in a garbage can inside the bar....ewwww. Kind of a Dive bar. It will do in a pinch.

Buffet not to shabby. Snow crab legs. Prime rib. And a bunch of other great food. Service was an A+. Almost O.D.ed on butter and crab . Worth it!

I only come here because it's a convenient place to eat after a trip to the beach. The layout is pretty great, probably one of my favorite things about this place. I love the deck area, gives off a tiki beach party vibe. The food is actually pretty good too. I ordered the chicken wings and you could tell they were made pretty fresh, at least it wast frozen from a bag like most bars. Their drinks are ok but over priced. The atmosphere can get super sketchy depending on when you go. I think i might be a biker hangout of sorts. The waitress was one of the worst I've experienced. She seemed annoyed from the get go when i simply asked what the drink specials were. She seemed impatient as well because I was asking for her assistance on what's good to order (isn't that part of your job?). When we flagged her down to order a second around (she had not checked on us at all) she said sorry my shift is almost over you will need to go to the bar. She couldn't even hand my card to the bartender for me and order our drinks before she left. Th service and atmosphere are sketchy. The food is pretty good. I only go here during the summer if I go to the beach.

I am not a fan of this place. The rooftop is okay though. There are some sketchy people that go there. The crowd is why I try to avoid this place. The service isn't the best either.

Matey's is one of our favorite restaurants. Although we live in South Bend, we make the hour drive for a meal and drinks there many times a year, especially during the summer. Their buffet is awesome, crab legs, oysters, scallops, prime rib...and the list goes on. Their burgers are fire, wings are good. Drink prices are reasonable. Love this place, highly recommend it.

Not many surprises at this place. It's a standard touristy restaurant, complete with fruity drinks served in a bucket, promo girls with free booze and torturously high heels, and fried food in a basket. There are three decks overlooking Lake Michigan (and the NIPSCO cooling tower) and supreme people watching. The food is actually decent for bar fare, but they only serve potato chips instead of fries. Today was my first visit to Matey's, and there happened to be a bikini contest. I've never actually witnessed a bikini contest before, but nevertheless I had certain expectations. Maybe there would be an MC, or the contestants would display themselves on a platform, or perhaps a talent round or some Q & A. Nope, the lovely ladies didn't even introduce themselves or shake their rumps. The three contestants walked around the deck a few times holding up their ID number; one of them chatted us up and explained the process ("they'll give you a paper and then you write down the number of your favorite girl"), another went on a drunken rant about unions, and the third allowed eager patrons to pose for a photo with her. A few minutes later, a server approached the table with a pen and two post-it notes on which we were instructed to write down the number of our favorite contestant. So much for pomp and circumstance. Anyway, it was a beautiful day, all the patrons were in good spirits, and my cod sandwich was pretty good. There are certainly better places for drinks and a meal in Michigan City, but Matey's is fun if you're looking to waste a few hours on a beautiful summer afternoon.

Fun place except for the biker gang "devil's disciples" who were preying on college girls. otherwise it can be fun with the patio. definitely not a hip place though, they place horrible music and it's basically a tiki/beach bar with beer logos everywhere. Would not eat here, just come for drinks one night.

Location looks good and interesting. Not a family place......apparently Indiana has a law that doesn't allow kids under 21 to eat with their parents in the restaurant if the restaursnt serves alcohol. It was 11 in the morning and no one in our group was drinking. No business for Indiana on this trip.

My husband and I dined here last night. We LOVED the atmosphere and the food was absolutely great. We both ordered sandwiches and an appetizer (very filling), and our bill was about $31. It was not bad at all. The prime rib and seafood buffet (which is on Fridays) is $29.99 a person; we will have to give that a shot sometime. Anyway, I will happily recommend this place to family and friends. Oh yeah, and it's literally a 2-minute drive from Blue Chip. Haha.

Service was excellent!! Thanks Christina(our server)!! Food was good, we had dinner on the second level and the view was nice. As long as Christina takes care of us, we will keep going back!!!

A childhood friend inherited a gorgeous lakehouse in Beverly Shores so I am frequently exploring this cute little town when I need a getaway from Chicago. I can count on one hand the fun bars in the neighborhood and was always curious about Matey's, especially with the crowded rooftop bleachers. It looked divey enough and fun so our group went in to experience it. Not like the 'Children of the Corn' crowd at the local biker bar (don't ask) but fun, non threatening where we won't end up someone's lampshade, lol. Lots of rooms but naturally we migrated towards the dark nautical themed bar. Instantly greeted with a huge smile by the tall-hat wearing chef we coined 'Chef Boyardee'. He talked us through the entire menu and steered us towards the endless Crab Legs. They are piled high in a Corona bucket and as much as I loved them, my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I didn't even make a dent. Great experience from start to finish. He only left our table to cook and serve them, then came back to continue entertaining us, which was welcomed since the older bartender was too afraid to even move, much less serve us our drinks. It takes a lot to get my group to leave the gorgeous lakehouse but for Matey's Crab Legs and Chef Boyardee's hospitality, we will def make exceptions.

Service was excellent! Visiting from NJ and the server was so friendly and knew the menu perfectly. The food is phenomenal and it's a fantastic themed restaurant.

This place is fun for people watching. I've been here a few times and I always get the cod sandwich and chips. Pretty big sandwich, you may want to split this. It's a fun place to eat if you are having a staycation and are in Michigan City.

ahoy! this place is supes festive. vacation-y, tropical, pirate-y. a biker bar. sit up on the roof deck at the bar underneath the shade if it's a super hot day out. i ordered the strawberry/kiwi vodka drink. i had a few of those. just sat and people-watched, of course. didn't order any food, but the burgers looked HUGE! and tasty.

Over the weekend I went to Matey's, despite having a good time during the evening, it was the end of the night that will make me never step foot in their establishment again. As I was waiting for the bathroom, I look over and see a 6'5" male, yelling aggressively at a 5'4" female. I hear him call her the b-word and that did not sit well with me. I went over to him and said I did not appreciate him calling her that name. Turns out he was an employee, which makes it even worse. I said as a customer I didn't appreciate hearing that. I was then confronted by other males in the bar who said it's none of your business and she shouldn't be "acting like one". I don't know the whole story. The woman said all she wanted was her receipt and seemed pretty distraught by the situation. But despite what happened, as a business, as an employee, no one has the right to call any woman that name. After what happened in California last week, I don't appreciate witnessing something like that as a woman. It makes me feel completely unsafe and no one should have to witness that nor experience that. I have been to other bars where this situation would have been handled completely different. Do not support Matey's. I regret not getting names of those involved. But if you witness this type of behavior, please get names and report it to the management.

This is a non-food review only. Saw this place after spending some time at the beach. We decided to stop by for some cold beverages and appetizers. We got neither. We sat at the bar and were not greeted by a server or bartender. However we did witness an over served 20-something year old girl starting a fight with a couple in their early 60's. Mind you this was 3:45 in the afternoon on a Tuesday so a tough work week was no excuse. The older couple was eating a meal while the classy young lady decided to spit on the wood deck. Yeah a wood deck-not the outside ground which clearly would have been more lady like and sanitary. Rather than apologize for being disgusting and letting it go the young lady decided to threaten and spew expletives at the couple. And so she spits again in the direction of the older couple. Thats when we left. The problem I have with this place is that no staff person on the deck stepped in. This young person was also over served at 3:30 on a Tuesday afternoon-that's a big no no in the service industry. Clearly you cannot blame this 100% on the restaurant however they should be trained better to recognize when someone is over served. They also need to be confident in stepping in to diffuse situations quicker. If you serve alcohol there are going to be issues. This situation could have been avoided after the initial spitting but the staff was not getting involved. Oh and Brittany (AKA the Classy Spitter) don't be so selfish. It's ok to admit you did something wrong and apologize.

Matey's is a mixed bag ranging from truly excellent to poor. We have been return customers for six years now eating mostly standard bar appetizers, sandwiches, their really great Cajun Seafood Chowder and drinking draft beer from their generally good selection. Based on these experiences, I would give them a five star rating. However, because of our satisfaction with our repeat visits, we decided to return for their Friday night, never to be famous, seafood buffet. What a disaster! Other than the standard shrimp with cocktail sauce and some optional carved beef, the seafood concoctions were amazingly unpalatable. The baked scallops in some sort of sauce looked great until I put a fork in them and watched them convert to mush more easily eaten with a spoon. As bad as this was, the Cajun Seafood Chowder is not to be missed. I once convinced them to sell me a gallon of the stuff for take out. Really, the Chowder served with garlic toast with a couple sides of beer is worth the trip.

Pleasantly surprised. We were driving home from Saugatuck, MI to Chicago and decided to stop at the Outlets Malls in Michigan City, IN. After all the shopping we were pretty hungry!!! We found Matey's Bar and Restaurant. I must admit, I was unsure about this place. There is not much around it, the place looks just OK from outside. Its not a fancy place. BUT it was close to the mall and on our way to the highway so we decided to give it a try. WOW am I glad. The food was pretty good, I had a Chili Soup and a Yummy Hamburger. My husband had some fish dish. We had a couple of beers while watching the Cubs/Cards game. Service was outstanding. I was VERY happy! I even told my husband, "Hey next time we come shopping, we know where to eat afterwards" So I do recommend it!

We were looking forward to going to this fun looking place but when we got there there was a sign on the door had to be 21 to enter even though it is a restaurant. So since we had our teenagers we couldn't go in. The owners choose letting people smoke to feeding entire families, in a tourist town I don't know if this is a good decision

I was very disappointed with the bartender in the downstairs room, she seemed very unprofessional, sloppy, and was complaining of a hangover while smoking her cigarette in front of me as I was trying to eat and enjoy myself. I will only go if my favorite bartender is there. He is well mannered, polite, and seems to have a good following. The food is amazing and I love going on the deck!

Went there for lunch and a couple beers for the second time, and have definately come to the conclusion that I will never order food there again. We sat in the upper deck outside area which has a limited menu. I ordered a burger. It came out with cheese on it, and the bartender sent it back. Within minutes another burger was brought out with no cheese, but was overcooked and dry. I had ordered it medium. Not wanting to send it back a third time, I ate half and nicely told the bartender it wasnt good. She said "sorry", that was it. Last time we ate there I ordered grilled shrimp. It was fishy and a very small portion. This is definately a good place to have a beer on a nice day, but that's it. It seems there is absolutely no concern for patrons here.
