On a nice fall trip to the area, I was given a tip to try this awesome place. I went in and was offered the lunch buffet option. The place is nice for the area. More a nostalgic charm. I would rate it a 3 out of 5 on décor and cleanest. I went up and got a salad and the salad bar was nicely laid out with quality options. I went up next and was like just fried chicken. At first I was disappointed. I grab some mash potato, gravy and corn and a piece of chicken. I sat down and was about to get a little upset with this place until....... The first bite of the chicken was heaven. The seasoning was incredible. This was cooked perfectly and was juicy as well as tasty. There is no reason for Hearthstone to have anything else on the lunch buffet. A nice little place serving awesome food in Metamora. Take a rode trip and check out the town and this nice nostalgic restaurant. If you are bored of chain restaurants and think for yourself and are not manipulated by millions of dollars in TV commercials to make yourself believe you have to eat average to below average overpriced food at some chain restaurant, I am one of you. Let's all keep supporting the true food scene in Indiana.

The Hearthstone has inexpensive breakfasts, and a reasonably priced lunch buffet. They have a seafood buffet available on Fridays. I highly recommend the fried chicken - it is exceptional.

We had been here 8 years ago and decided that while in the area we would stop again. Bad idea. The place was under a new owner and they were no where's the quality of the originals. My wife ordered Chicken. The portions were huge but when my wife took a bite she quickly went for her water glass. The chicken had so much pepper on it, it burned your mouth. She then ordered a tenderloin. It was thin and had a great deal of gristle in it. But she ate it. I ordered the cat fish dinner. Like the chicken it was huge ( no problems with the portions ). But upon examining there was mostly breading. And the meat itself was not cooked. And removing it from the bones was a trick. I also had beets and cottage cheese. The beets were extremely hard and the cottage cheese was extremely runny. I also had fries with the meal. They were extremely greasy and limp. Overall with the exception of the pepper the food was bland. Also who ever said it had a massive salad bar is completely incorrect. I think they seen the salad bar next to the hot bar with meats and potatoes and vegetable and took that as also part of the salad bar. Which it is not. The hot bar is $ 14.95 just by itself. All the time we were eating a table completely across the restaurant with about 10 people at it had a 3 or 4 year old that screamed, not cried, but screamed, It was so bad that a table of 4 that came in after us got up and canceled their meal and left. The waitress was complaining about the heat, while to owner was standing in from on the only air conditioning vent I seen in the place attempting to stay cool. The waitress said it had to be a thousand degrees in the kitchen and almost as bad in the dining area. We are talking about a place that charges $15.00 for 3 piece of chicken and fries and the same for Cat Fish. So we are not talking about a "dive" Their seafood dinner buffet was $25.00 to $ 30.00 per person. This is also a high dollar tourist area. All and all I would not recommend this place to eat at.

I have to admit that this place is so close to our house that we rarely go there. But, when we have a hankering for fried chicken we just order a box to go and run down and pick it up. They are well known for their chicken, and in a region where fried chicken is a staple that's something. (I was going to say something to crow about, but....) This is one of the restaurants on the Chicken Trail through southeastern Indiana.

Went for a Saturday night drive. My wife remember her mom use to go to this place so we went. Was happy to see a buffet also a seafood buffet but when the price was 24.99 decided to just get the 14.99 non seafood buffet. They had alot. The chicken was good it was the eastern Indiana kind heavy on the pepper. The food was just lacking something?? Most of it was bland. To me it was like a Amish want to be!!! It was not even close to it. I would give the chicken a great rating so skip the buffet and stick to the chicken.

Pleasant wait-staff, they made us feel very welcome and were pleasant. Paying $24 for the seafood buffet made me cringe, but I couldn't pass it up - I was told there was Crab Legs, Frog Legs, Calamari, Cocktail and Fried Shrimp and lots more - she made it sound amazing. Everything was cold, and very tough (no calamari and lots more). We joked, it was like Seafood Jerky, which was a first... can say I've never had that before. But, I fear we way overpaid and reading a similar review - I'm afraid I won't be back, and I'm sad about that - because I'd love to go again... The dessert was good, just not worth $24.

We've been to the Hearthstone 3 times now, and have always had a very good experience. The fried chicken is outstanding, as are the BBQ ribs. The breaded tenderloin is...well, I'm sorry, it's just not very good. But we sure do like everything else. And, if you get the buffet, the dessert selection alone is worth the price of admission. The service can be a little slow at times...not terribly slow, but enough that I can't give them a 5 star rating.

Hearthstone is a favorite place for a lot of folks because of the smorgasboard buffet. It's also got some claim to fame for being the place where Tom Cruise & Co. filmed the cabin scenes for Rain Man. They do a very big business, with a lot of locals as well as out-of-towners. It's a destination stop for a lot of bikers in the decent weather months. The best thing on the buffet is their fried chicken. It's actually pretty darn good. There's lots and lots of stick to your ribs country food on the buffet - usually ham, BBQ ribs, fried shrimp, mac and cheese, beans, mashed taters & gravy, etc... They also sport a massive salad bar as well, which is always really good. On Friday nights, they add seafood, which is usually crawfish, fried clams, peel & eat shrimp, and snow crab... complete with cocktail sauce and drawn butter. Oh! Add hushpuppies. Now I have actually gotten some bad peel & eat, and we were there early in the evening. But the smell was really unmistakable and rancid. I hope some people didn't get sick on it. They need a better service for that instead of a big stainless bowl with ice in it. But the snow crabs are... well decent... snow crabs. It's all you can eat, so don't be expecting any Carlo & Johnny's or Mike Fink's raw bar. This ain't the Waterfront. The real downer is the desserts. I have simply never once been enthused by anything they've ever had - but then again, I am usually full from eating the buffet that I don't necessarily have a whole lot of dessert motivation anway. Maybe that's the point. They know their crowd and just sort of show up for the game and don't really intend to play hard. The locals seem to really hit the bar as well. I think there are a lot of regulars that hang out there. Not a big drinker myself, but if I were, this would probably be a decent hang. They have a very large meeting/event room that can be booked for parties and such. It's pretty nice with a fireplace and separate wait staff service. I don't know how many the place holds, but I think the Lion's Club or local Rotary... something... meets there regularly. In the decent weather months, they have a patio grill area where I've eaten once. Eating out there is literally an entirely different dining experience - may as well be a different restaurant. I've never actually ordered off the menu, usually opting for the buffet, but they seem to have a pretty wide selection of stuff. Most people go here for the smorgasboard though. The service is usually really good. Never once a complaint about the wait staff.

I eat here at least once a month. The drive over from Fairfield Ohio is an hour or less. They have a buffet Friday thru Sunday, as well as the menu which is available Wednesday thru Sunday. They also offer a breakfast and lunch buffet but not sure of the days and times on those. The chicken is great, and for those who like frog legs these are way better than any others I have had in restaurants. It's good country food, served by very nice people. This is one of those places where you want to come back, not just because of the food, but the people and owners make it a very special place.

We had the buffet lunch today, and since it was Mother's Day, it was busy! But after a short wait, the hostess graciously seated us even though we did not have a reservation. The food is simple, home cooked, and delicious! The fried chicken is a must have. They are one of the stops on the Indiana Fried Chicken Trail. Our server was attentive, even though she had several tables to look after. They always have a home made soup on the amazing salad bar too. Stop by, and get filled up!
