What a surprise!! We sat outside on their beautiful patios and it was a gorgeous evening too. The food was delicious, I had the fajitas and a strawberry margarita. The staff was friendly but kind of slow. I will stop by again.

Food was just ok- nothing special. They have a gorgeous outdoor patio which is really nice in the summer. But there are way better Mexican restaurants.

What a gem! Came here by chance with my dad and did not expect the surprise that awaited. We sat in the patio and the place was gorgeous! For a while, I felt like I wasn't even in Northwest Indiana anymore. Our server was so sweet and she checked up on us every little while. We got a pitcher of the strawberry margaritas and they were delicious! The food was great and we tried the fried ice cream dessert, which was excellent! There were a good amount of people there, but it didn't seem very crowded, as there is plenty of space in the patio. The servers were very attentive the entire night, which was a huge plus. I will definitely come back!

The patio is the reason I came, it was a beautiful day/night and I wanted to sit outside. I don't know what happened to this place, but the patio used to be so nice. Tables, chairs and trash were just thrown about everywhere. It was not comfortable and it was very weak at night. I figured there would be some ambient lamps and fire, but it was really dark. There were no clean tables, so me and my friend got seated at an oversized table meant for 8 people because they were too lazy to clean a table for us. We asked to be moved and they eventually cleaned a table for us. The hostess seemed like she didn't know what was going on and didn't know if we could smoke or not. We had to ask multiple times. Our waitress was nice, but she kept forgetting to bring us things we needed and hardly came to our table. We sat with empty drinks most of the night. It took a long time for us to get our check. I ordered Chicken Chimichangas, nothing to brag about. The menu is way too big, too much frozen food. The bathroom is the scariest part of all. There was sewage sitting in the toilet and it wouldn't flush. The bathroom had a horrible smell and there was urine everywhere. I had plans to go here again next week, but we are going somewhere else. I will not be returning here. It seems like this place is focusing too much on their decor instead of things that matter like cleanliness, quality fresh food and good service.

Was here on Friday night, there was a loud band so we opted to sit inside. Ordered a house margarita and I think they forgot the tequila, it was like drinking water. The chips were stale and asking for another basket didn't help. I ordered Shrimp Taco's which was their special, I asked for no tomatoes but there was tomatoes so they took it back and picked a few off and sent it back out. It didn't come with cheese or sauce so it was dry. My husband ordered a taco salad and instead of it coming in the edible bowl, the tortilla was broken apart and placed around the plate. Nothing special about the salad. Up until this experience we liked the food and drinks but something was definitely off, not sure if we will try it again or not. There is a lot of Mexican restaurants in the area that do a better job!

The food was delicious and the sangria was off the hook. I will be coming back again. Juan our server was wonderful. Made me feel very welcome.

I tried this place on Cinco De Mayo for lunch. I really enjoyed my meal, I got the chicken enchiladas. They have good portions and the food was fabulous. I was not a big fan of their salsa, but their chips are amazing!! Everyone at my office seemed to be upset to their stomach after, but I was completely fine. Could be a coincidence...who knows. So it looks like we won't be getting it at work for lunch anymore. Oh well, I can just go after work without them ;)

The location was convenient and the ambiance was genuine but this place had one too many negatives for me to go back again. The indoor portion smelled like spilled beer (authentic for a cantina! but totes barf worthy on a warm night) and the back patio while absolutely beautiful had an issue with flies. Service was ok, not out of this world but then again I was with a large party so I think overall our waiter did well in keeping up with the demands of 10 hungry and thirsty dudes that just came out of the steel mill. Ultimately we took a while to order because we kept ordering beers and milling through the menu (excellent variety!). And then comes the food. I didn't like it. The corn based shells tasted stale and honestly weird. The flour based ones felt like they had been in that plastic dish longer than they should have. The shrimp was good but the salsa roja wasn't. And the beans and other garnishes didn't really feel or taste any better than fast-food quality. Going in I was expecting a lot more since the placed looks great and the wait staff seemed genuine in their desire for us to have a good night, but the smells indoor and the very-blah food just ruined it for me.

The half price margaritas were good and the service was excellent, but the atmosphere was off putting. It had the decibel level of a bar and conversation across a table was impossible. When the amateur band took the "stage" it was definitely time to leave. More bar than restaurant.

  • We Are L.

Place is great and the food is tasty. The truth is you can get Mexican food anywhere. People go here for the "experience!" Especially on the patio! I've enjoyed it myself. Its quite nice. I wouldn't go there Friday night though. I felt rushed out of the door. $80 bill came within 15 minutes. For what? Go to a quick taco joint for $15 you get quality food. They will even play music in there restaurant. Why even be open on Friday at all then? You have a packed patio, did you really just kick everyone out? Aren't you in business to make $?

This Mexican or so called Mexican restaurant is not authentic. I had a steak taco and a chicken sopa and neither were very good. I also had a glass of the Sangria and it was so bitter that I only could drink a few sips. My boyfriend had the steak burrito and was VERY disappointed. He wasn't even sure if it was steak in his burrito. The only reason I give this place two stars is because the outside patio has a great atmosphere and the wait staff was very friendly and fast.

Don't waste your time on this place. Apparently the patio is nice but I sat inside. The seats were wet and torn, with flies all around us. The flies landed on my food, in my drink and on my face. I was completely discussed. My thought is if your dinning area is this poorly maintained, then what does the kitchen look like.

Outside patio is unbelievable! The fajita is delicious. I will definitely be back. No other Mexican restaurant compares to this!

Very impressed with this place. Actually stopped here by chance and so glad we did. From the hostess down to the buser, everyone we encountered was so pleasant. It really does make a difference. The restaurant was busy that day, but we still didn't feel any impact. The food still came out fast, our waiter was still attentive, and the food was cooked properly and tasted good. We ordered the carna asada dinner and burrito dinner, along with alcohol. I'll definitely be back to dine here. Thanks to all of the staff for making a memorable impression!

There is no place like this in N W. Indiana, a very well hidden treasure. The out-door area is much bigger than the inside area. This is like being in the islands or coastal Mexico. They have 2. Inch stone table, lots of greenery, a creek runs through the patio and a lot of Mexican decor, and many fountains. The sangria was the best I have ever had..the chips and green salas were homemade and wonderful. The food however was just average. The waitress was bubbly and very attentive . IF YOU WANT TO BE OUTSIDE FOR FOOD AND / OR COCKTAILS THIS PLACE IS A MUST. It is now on my favorites list.

  • Benita M.

The guacamole is expensive, but will have you craving it for weeks after you've dined. The fajitas are super juicy and flavorful, unlike many others Mexican establishments. The beef tacos are also good. My daughter ate two, which rarely happens.

  • Katie R.

That was probably the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten. .. It tasted so awful I barely got through one taco. ..I had to eat at least one since I knew that I would be consuming some alcohol that evening. The outdoor patio looked cool but we weren't allowed to hang in there. I wouldn't go back there if you paid me.

I went here with my Mom for lunch, I ordered a Premium Gold Lime Margarita. Now I'm going to have to go back to try another one as my first sip was delicious but after squeezing my lime wedge and putting it in the drink It got really bitter. I'll just leave it alone next time. Complementary salsa verde and chips came out within minutes of sitting down, really good. The entre was great, I had the skirt steak off the lunch menu, freaking delicious and perfectly cooked. I also had a pork taco a la carte, again delicious. The bathrooms as well as the restaurant were really clean and the service was great. Prices were very reasonable as well.

It wasn't terrible but it wasn't totally amazing. Average food. Wasn't a huge fan of their chips and salsa and thats my favorite part. Good value. Just okay Sangria. I probably should've tried a margarita instead. Overall pretty decent I'd say.

Food is ok. Way over priced. Messed up my order both times I went. I have only done carry out.

I, like most people from this area, was under the La Carretta spell. When someone said mexican I said La Car. Sorry La Carretta your oversized drinks and heavy 'mexican' food does not compare to the authenticity Villa Del Sol offers. Not to mention the badass patio out back! The food is real, delicious, and doesnt leave you with that sickly feeling. The margaritas are perfect! And its nice that you dont have to drink 60oz to catch a buzz. To get to the point: great food, great drinks, great atmosphere, great service! What more could you ask for?!

  • Britt B.

I was pleasantly surprised when my boyfriend and I walked into Villa del Sol. I hadn't heard any reviews one way or another, and didn't Yelp it until we were about to pull up. I immediately saw mixed reviews but we were hungry and so we decided to try it. Our hostess was very friendly and sat us right away; we chose to sit on their patio. Upon walking onto the patio I felt as if we were transplanted from NWI to some entirely different region (I'm not sure I'd say Mexico...but definitely somewhere prettier than NWI). The patio was set up very nicely and the tables were so far away from one another for a perfect intimate meal. We each ordered mango margaritas which were perfect, not too sweet! The salsa verde was one of the better salsas I've had from any Mexican restaurant in this area. We both ordered shrimp dishes...he had the Diablo Shrimp dinner (very, very, very hot but so very good) and I had the Villa del Sol salad with grilled shrimp. The shrimp was very good and the salad was great with all the veggies and fruit but my only complaint would be the greens...this salad called for something a little more exotic than romaine and iceberg lettuce. Our server was attentive and friendly and his service was very quick though we never felt rushed. We will definitely be dining here again.

This place is awesome..the service is great the food is authentic to mexico not tex mex style..the decor is cool..the outdoor patio is beautiful and the margaritas were mixed perfectly..highly recommend you eat here.

Place was empty on a Friday night which had me concerned right away. Overall I was not impressed with the food or service.

  • Kathryn O.

So pleased to have a great Mexican place to go to!!! After La Carretta got to big for its britches this place is a breath of fresh air!! The patio is worth going on its own!!! It's huge and so cool!!! Some might be scared about the green salsa...have no fear it's delicious!!! Chips are good too! Their fundito is good nice portion size. I've had the flautas, chile rellenos and tacos. All were delicious! The chiles were just like my moms!! And that's hard to find. So many places mess up something so simple! I tried the fried ice cream last time I went and loved it! Service on the patio can be a little lax but it doesn't deter me from sitting out there. I suggest everyone try it out while the weather is still nice!!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
