Mike is right. It is an ice cream shop(pe), not a coffee shop by any means, and the ice cream is superb. He buys great ice cream from Sherman's and delicious desserts from what is one of the best bakers in the region! Those two things carry this business as quality coffee & customer service are not the order of the day at Temple. We have given it a couple other chances and the family loves the ice cream. The coffee remains a train wreck of an experience, however, and it is all because of the multitude of reasons the proprietor mentions in his posted retort... the greatest of which is that the place is frequently over run with middle school & highschool-age youth who shouldn't be trusted to dispense their own cream and sugar (and who turn the throwback laidback atmosphere into LPHS Cafeteria time), the staff isn't properly trained, and the owner is only interested in coffee as a side gig for the ice cream scooping biz. Kudos to Mike for employing the underexperienced to scoop ice cream & run the register. Keep it simple, pal. For ice cream, there is no better place in town (unfortunately). For coffee & overall customer service? Keep walking.

A visit to downtown La Porte is just not complete without a visit to Temple. It is just a block off the main street, Lincolnway, and it's quiet location on Jefferson between Indiana and Michigan Avenues adds to it's charm. It's a combination of old-fashioned ice cream parlor and hip coffee house with a side of kitsch thrown in. It's named after the original business that occupied that location, and you can still purchase newspapers there, as well as used books. If you're from the area, or there visiting someone who is, you'll be amused by the collection of old local high school yearbooks where you can check out how we all looked back in the day. It is also a musicians' hangout and a favorite place for local musicians to jam, often on an impromptu basis. Tuesday is Bluegrass night, and even if you think you do not like bluegrass, you can't help but be entertained -- chances are you will find your toes tapping along with these characters. While delicious confections made with Sherman's ice cream are the favorite of the young and young-at-heart (my personal favorite is the chocolate sodas made the time-intensive old-fashioned way!), they also have awesome coffee as well as a variety of espresso beverages. They sell fresh coffee beans and loose-leaf teas in a variety of flavors, as well as chocolates and other items. There are different soups and lunch specials on different days and the paninis are not to be missed. Stop in and belly up to the bar! You'll be supporting a homegrown, local business, and you won't be disappointed!

I'm a Chicago resident and make the journey to this incredible throwback of a place. Doc quick, take me back to 1966! It's an old fashioned ice cream parlor coupled with a reading/entertainment room that appears to have been plucked out of 1966 Haight-Ashbury with an eclectic collection of books, old guitars, album covers and interesting miscellaneous stuff all over the place. There are old couches and comfortable chairs. The place has soul. On Monday evenings at 7 cst they have an open mic with some pretty good talent. This week there was a great guitar finger picker and a good cellist along with a number of interesting whacked-out poets. This place is a real trip. There are also the added benefits of easy parking and real cute girls dishing out ice cream treats like the cappuccino milkshake that is a must have.

I love this location! The atmosphere here is nostalgic and I love it! The employees are all very friendly and helpful. And so far I have not tried a single thing (food or drinks) on their menu I didn't like! They use great coffee and this is definitely my favorite spot locally for coffee!

I constantly hear and hear about people shining that LaPorte needs a Starbucks. You know just shut up already. LaPorte has two fine independant coffee shops and they are both outstanding. Support them and stop talking smack because you don't need one. Temple is awesome. If you like a very good cup of coffee, very cool and friendly staff and a very eclectic and interesting decor than this is your spot to chill or get a coffee to go the choice is yours. Ice cream did someone say ice cream? We stopped there early in the day and we were not craving ice cream all that much but when we do the next time we are out there we will be back to try some!

I used to go to this local gem when I lived here, but now I stop by when I'm in town. there is a bit of everything here- ice cream, coffee, and local history. There are copies of the ElPe, the LaPorte High School year book. It's an interesting stroll down memory lane here, all the while enjoying a warm cup of coffee.
