Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Great authentic Mexican food with prompt courteous service. We were only one of 4 tables seated the night we went, and only one of 2 tables that didn't speak Spanish as our native tongue.......and it's the first "Mexican" restaurant that I've been to that served Mexicans or Mexican Americans! I'll be back.

A friend and I were looking for somewhere new to try, and ended up at Taqueria El Maguey. I was kind of skeptical when I pulled up, because as another reviewer mentioned, it's in an old KFC building--and it's pretty obvious. It's very cramped inside, and because we went at noon, the place was really hectic. Servers were running everywhere and pretty much every table was filled. Once we sat down, we got chips and salsa right away. Someone brought our drinks quickly and took our order. The food came out really quickly. I ordered the taco special--two tacos, your choice of meat, with beans and rice for $5.59. Not bad! The food was a little bland but they have hot sauce on the table for you to spice it up. The tortillas were really good too. We ordered a small bowl of guacamole for $2.50, going with the chunky kind, and it was AMAZING. I have a new favorite guacamole. I couldn't even finish my lunch. The food was really good and really filling, and the service was great (though a little harried). I think next time I'll force myself to slow down on the chips and guacamole (ha, ha, ha) so I can finish my lunch...

Great food and service and very reasonably priced. We will definitely go back.

This is probably the newest Mexican restaurant in the Lafayette area, and they definitely serve a more authentic fare. As a warning, the burritos are insanely large, and depending on what you order, they can be very spicy as well. On the menu, only chicken, steak, and shrimp are listed as the protein options for the burritos, but my boyfriend was able to order a chorizo burrito with no problem. I had the fajitas el maguey, and I'm pretty sure I could make 4 complete meals out of the dish. The portions are very generous and a fantastic value. The only reason why I refrained from giving them 4 stars was because the service is not very good. The waitresses are rather inattentive, and we had to go up to the register to ask for our waters to be refilled. That being said, you can totally bypass the bad service by ordering to go, which I highly recommend because the food is very tasty.

I haven't had as bad of service for lunch as others have had, but I agree that the service is a bit suspect. It would not keep me from eating there though. The food is plentiful and is as good as any Mexican you will find in Lafayette. The Burritos Texicano is, aside from being way too big to finish, is outstanding. This is quickly becoming an office lunch favorite!

I'm not sure where to start. Great service, great food, day in, day out. One of my favorites spots in Lafayette. I recommend the steak quesadilla, mar y Tierra or if your with three or four friends the tabla maguey! Large portions full of flavor and authentic.

My expectations were low when walking in the place, all the tables were filthy, the walls look like they are falling down on the inside, the tables and chairs didn't match. But we decided to keep an open mind and prayed yhe food would be worth it. It took almost fifteen minutes after seating ourselves to even get a menu. Another twenty to get two simple drinks. The chips seemed to be homemade, the salsa was so runny it was like red water. The "Mexican Guacamole" was amazing. Fresh Avacados, onions, cilantro, and tomatos to make a very good refeshing dip. The Bistek Ranchero was so spicy my friend couldn't even finish it. I had the Fajita El Maguey. The tortillas were very good and fresh. The main courses were mediocre. The refried beans were disgusting and ice cold. At the end of our meal we were brought the check, we asked if we could split the check. It took twenty minutes for someone else to bring us back the same check and tell us he will split it at the register. The food was edible but the service was so bad that we won't be back.

I hesitate to even give two stars, but it is edible so you get two. The food is bland and apparently the only redeeming quality is size. Yes, you get a lot of it, but this "food" is lacking any flavor or quality. Speaking of quality, when we left we got to see where some of the produce comes from and it was daunting to say the least. Picture one of those scary white vans without windows and full of old tires and dirty rags, then on top of that are boxes of onions and limes. Sure didn't look sanitary. Also, the place was filled with screaming children. Drawing on windows with greasy little hands, standing on chairs, yelling and really adding to the generally poor ambience of this establishment. The service was pretty miserable as well, they had to ask what we ordered more than once and seemed barely able to get basic service accomplished. But really, the food is just awful people. Nothing redeeming about it. You are better off just opening a can of refried beans and throwing some old cheese on top. I have had better food at Taco Rico, Mi Cabanita, Jarocho's, Don Pablos, and Taco Bell than what is offered here. We tried twice just hopong that we came on and off day, but nope, it is just awful. How the heck did it get such good reviews??

The hubby and I decided to try a new Mexican joint and since all of the reviews seemed good we stopped by El Maguey. I was severely disappointed. It was dingy inside. The salsa was runny and had very few vegetables in it, it was like a broth. My husband ordered fajitas, which had no flavor whatsoever. I had the tacos al pastor, disgusting. My rice and beans were lukewarm and the meat in the tacos was chewy and the flavor was terrible. I ate half a taco but couldn't get any more down. We will definitely not be going back to this place.

Best darn mexican restaurant in the area. For years I've been looking for a good, authentic mexican restaurant in the Lafayette area. I finally found this place last year. It's fantastic. The food is cheap, authentic, flavorful, and fresh. The service has always been great too. The staff is friendly and they are quick with their service. I've been here several times and have yet to have an unpleasant experience or a dish I haven't liked. Most importantly, they have good salsa and offer delicious queso blanco dip. Eating here makes me reminisce on the time I spent in Costa Rica. It's a casual place that you can take your family to and enjoy a good meal without spending a ton. I would highly recommend this establishment for your next dinner.

Yum! Great guacamole, salsa as well. Heard about the massive size of their burritos & great value. We did dine in, lunch specials were great deal for the money & quality. The service was good, a little slow to bring our check, but very friendly, appears better than in previous reviews. Will for sure go there again. Much better speed and friendlier than some of the better known places in town. I gave 4 stars because some of their sides, ex: queso, guac. was a little pricey, but overall was very good & will for sure visit here again! Great little local place to visit if you're in the area that is affordable & authentic.

We had great service and the food was great. Big portions- so now I have another meal too.
(5)Rohit J.
Good friendly service. They do not have many options for vegetarians. But I am sure they can improvise if you ask them. I ordered vegetarian fajitas which was good. Guacamole was much better than other places. Portions were good.

Heading down from Illinois to South Carolina. This place was worth a short drive from the highway. We had basic stuff, tacos (chicken, lengua and carne asada), burrito, and enchilada. The food was flavorful and corn tortillas were fresh. What places serve nopales? That was a great thing to find.

El Maguey has become my go-to Mexican restaurant. What really keeps me coming back is the delicious carnitas - tender and delicious. I prefer to get it in taco form. It's really the best I've had. I also like to get the lunch special #5 (available all day) which has two tacos and a "small" burrito. You can get tacos "mexican style" with onion, cilantro and a lime, or "supreme" with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. I prefer mexican style. The supreme is good too, but the generous amount of toppings can overwhelm the taste of the meat. I tend to get grilled chicken in my burritos, which are served with a mild verde sauce and queso. There are more than just tacos and burritos. they have a large menu with lots of good stuff. They also have horchata and flavored waters (like pineapple and mango) to drink. oh yeah - fresh chips! All good stuff. This place is definitely worth a try.

The Mexican guacamole was a great starter, very chunky and fresh. My sister and I split the Texas burrito topped with a combo of red and green sauce and a pastor torta. The burrito was enormous, definitely plenty to split. It was full of beef, chicken, a few shrimp, sautéed veggies and rice and beans. Soooo delicious. The torta bread melted in my mouth and was perfectly matched by the tender pastor! I don't know how they made such normal Mexican food taste so good and I'm even from Texas! Also, friendly and fast service

This'll be a short one. Our favorite tattoo artist knows Lizz C. and I love good, real Mexican food, so he'd told us about this place and of course we HAD to go and check it out. We were NOT disappointed! They have the proper non-gringo stuff on the menu to let you know they're serious. (In this case, lengua and tripa!) They also make their own tortillas, and they are very, very good. Lizz doesn't eat corn or wheat very often, so she ordered 3 tacos meat-only; they didn't even bat an eye. Was no big deal. I ordered carne asada - one of my "acid tests" for a Mexican place. We also ordered some guacamole. The guac is insanely good. Very chunky, definitely fresh-made, and just very, very good. Wow. The house-made tortillas are just awesome - a really nice touch and one you don't see at many places anymore. My carne asada was, well, perfect, as were the accompanying rice and beans. I'll let Lizz comment on her tacos-meat-only when she gets around to her review. We'll be back; this is a very, very good Mexican restaurant - perhaps the New Best in Lafayette!
(5)Christina B.
Look, just do yourself a favor and order a chorizo burrito and get the chunky guacamole to dip your chips in. Thank me later.
(5)Mary H.
I agree with the Tiffany P.'s review. My husband ordered a chicken burrito and it was as long as his forearm--no joke. He only ate half and I even had 5 or 6 bites. I had two tacos, one beef and one chicken. They were very good and very authentic. The fresh cilantro is great and I added authentic mexican cheese to mine. It was very good and I would think 2 or 3 tacos is enough for a meal with some chips and they were like $1.70 each (cheaper than some of the stuff at Taco Bell!). The service was strange--we too had to go see about getting drink refills. The boy who helps kept talking to us about "can you believe they won't even help me do this" or whatever--and the waitress was waiting on her boyfriend and sitting down to talk with him. I would totally go again though. Improve the service and it will be a 4 or 5 star place for authentic and inexpensive Mexican fare.

This place is great but it used to be better. I'm updating my former 5 star review because I have now had three experiences where I ordered lengua tacos and the meat was dry and tough.
(4)Dave S.
Located in an old KFC, El Maguey is one our favorite restaurants in town. A highlight is the delicious homemade tortillas they serve with their tacos. The al pastor is typically very good. The guacamole mex is outstanding. They also have one of the largest burritos I've ever seen- burrito Texano.
(5)Michael C.
Great food!! One of the best in lafayette for lunch, of any type! Large portions, but also authentic, guacamole is awesome.
(5)Payton J.
By far and away the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. It's always nice when you've never heard of half of the things on the menu because you know you're getting to try something new. We had the burrito marino (absolutely huge), the shrimp chimichangas, and this thing I can't remember the name of but it was our favorite thing and I'll post a picture of it. Service was quick and friendly and they have cheap specials which is always a plus. Already looking forward to coming back.
(5)Toni P.
Maybe we came on an off night. The salsa is good til you get the weird pepper taste at the end. But still looking forward to the fajitas I ordered. Which were a huuuuuuge letdown. Tasteless is the word I would use to describe them. I had my husband taste just to make sure it wasn't just me. It wasn't, he said it was so bland he offered me part of his dinner. Which was sweet of him considering his order came out wrong. He ordered a soft taco and a beef enchilada and a chicken enchilada. He got a hard taco and 2 chicken enchiladas. Again, maybe we came on an off night. Hard to imagine a Saturday not being on your A game, but I don't think we will come back again to try our luck.

My girlfriend and I eat at this restaurant far too often. It is our default place to go because, the food is always so good, except the stewed chicken! They have a nice atmosphere with authentic looking Mexican artwork, which looks pretty neat.Neither one of us speak Spanish,So we have fun watching the soap opera's while we eat and make up dialogue.
(5)Megan T.
One of the better Mexican places in town. Much more what I'm used to from growing up in the Southwest. Would recommend the chorizo queso dip and burritos w/green sauce. If you need a split bill let them know right off the bat, trying to do it after is kind of a hassle.
(4)Steve H.
Great food! We got tacos and fajitas for our dinner. Portions were great and gave us a cheap lunch the next day.
(5)A Leeann S.
Very upset that they have hours posted open 10 am on Friday...it's now 10:25 am and STILL NOT OPEN. I tell my son about the food and get him excited about going we even wait for awhile only to get out (in the cold) the person taking chairs down inside the restaurant SEES me try to come in but the door is LOCKED .....SHE DOESN'T EVEN MAKE AN EFFORT TO OPEN THE DOOR!!! Glad business is so good you can turn customers away!!
(1)L L.
Seems like this place is in an old KFC. Low key, inexpensive and amazing flavors. Would go again in a minute.
(5)Dave H.
Great food. Get the burritos, they are HUGE! You can eat twice off of one. The food has flavor, plenty of spice and heat, but you get a taste of what mexican food SHOULD be. The staff is very nice and the restaurant is clean. You get your meal quickly, but it never feels rushed. Take out, dine in, drive through, all good options, you will NOT be disappointed if you want a great meal and the price be fair.
(5)Chloe T.
I've been to El Maguey time and time again. Big portions at great prices. The service is good and food tasty. I'll be back soon!
(5)Jordan B.
I have never seen burritos the size of bongo before. Oh, it tasted great, too.
