This place is so freakin' good. It's super casual, so if you wanna bring a date here that's cool. Just don't dress up. You order at the counter and sit down. They shout out your number and you go get it. Portions are LARGE and prices are RIGHT. They have Barq's Red Creme soda on tap (fountain) and that shit is like the tears of virgins. Brisket sandwich was TO DIE FOR and the Pulled Pork sandwich looked heavenly, too. The fried pickles are spears and you get a million of 'em. I know that there are fried pickle enthusiasts out there that favor chips over spears and that's find. I'm not one of you. If it's a fried pickle, I'm eating it. The different sauces are all very good. Get a lil cup of everything so you can try it out. Skip the cornbread. It's extra and it's nothing fancy.

This is a pretty good place, a little pricey though. My husband and I both got the 1/2 lb brisket. I was expecting really smokey slices of brisket, but the meat was kind of bland, but very tender. We both had to smother the meat with sauce, which was good, but wished the meat had more flavor on its own. We shared a basket of fried pickles, which you get several whole spears. I really liked them. All in all the food is good, just needs a little more seasoning. The atmosphere was very casual and the guy at the counter was very helpful in helping us figure out what to order.

I have recently moved to the area from the South, and I was craving BBQ as a taste of home. To provide background, I like it all: vinegar, tomato, or mustard based. Sadly, this place was a big disappointment. It is well designed and was generally clean, but the food was just not good. One way I determine good BBQ from bad BBQ is if the meat is delicious on its own. After a long wait, I got the pulled pork, and it was completely flavorless. The sauces were tasty though; they are mostly tomato-based. So I just smothered the dry, flavorless meat with sauce to make the meal edible. Also, I got cornbread that was burned all along the bottom. One star for the sauces, but that's all I think this place deserves. Still in search of decent BBQ in the area...

One of the best brisket places in Indiana! All business staff that makes delicious food!

Went there on a Saturday night at 8 pm and htey close at 10pm... they only had pulled pork and beef left. nothing else... really really sad! And, teh worst part is that they were also watery and bed! Also, we paid 1.30$ for a Southern toast... seriously!?!?! overrated!!

Excellent tender brisket! I enjoyed my brisket sandwich with a side of cornbread at lunch today. I recommend this place for lunch. As another review mentioned they are pretty popular, so get there at a decent time to get what you want (and a seat).

I wish I could give 4.5 stars. The only negative I have is that's it's a little "rough". We ordered the brisket plates with two sides and drinks. Cost was $23. The brisket was fantastic! Hubs had the fries and beans which were good and I had the cornbread and Mac and cheese. The Mac was tasty the cornbread was ok. We would definitely go back.

Best barbecue around, IMO. Fan-freaking-tastic brisket & pulled pork. Ribs and rib tips are just as good--the meat practically falls off the bone. At least 6 homemade sauces to choose from in jugs (in varying degrees of hotness), and plenty of unusual soda choices. Really, when was the last time you saw Mello Yello, red creme soda, and sweet tea all in one place? At a BBQ joint, the side dishes are almost as important as the main event, and SSSH didn't disappoint.: excellent mac'n'cheese, great baked beans, good southern greens. Terrific value for the money, although the seating area is small. Some people might be put off by the rather cozy nature, but South Street Smokehouse is a staple in the greater Lafayette area and they wouldn't have it any other way. Neither would I, for that matter. Oh, and their deep fried pecan pie? Otherworldly. Comes with a little tub of royal icing, and could very well be the most unhealthy $2.69 you'll ever spend. But oh sweet merciful jesus is it good.

This place was SO good! Definitely worth your time to check it out. Our entire family got different meals but everything was amazing. We loved the variety of BBQ sauces!

This is good Q y'all. I've had plenty of BBQ at places near and far, and Smokehouse stands up to all. The rib tips, spares, pulled meat...delicious. Varied sauces are good (my fave is the Sweet n Tangy). The sides aren't afterthoughts, as is the case in lesser joints. Good beans, onion rings, crazy good fried pickles (spears, not chips). Just two suggestions: bring back the old tater salad, and open on Sunday, please.

Delicious, quality BBQ and very friendly staff! Highly recommend the pulled pork sandwich and baby back ribs with Mike's Mild sauce.

We have been all over the nation for barbecue. We were pleasantly surprised when we found this place recently. Great food and a pretty decent atmosphere. I would like to see them do something different with their macaroni and cheese. Brisket is awesome !

This was a tasty surprise! We ordered the ribs and quarter chicken with Mac and cheese and greens. The Mac and cheese wasn't anything special but tasted good. The chicken was very tender and tasty. It was fun trying the line of BBQ sauces the had out. We wrapped up our meal with the fried pecan pie; I found this a bit disappointing. It felt like we were at the county fair eating fried food. Not many actual pecans in it though.

Not the best in Lafayette My husband and I frequented there for awhile, when it was really the only BBQ joint in Lafayette. I was always irked by the service. Their staff isn't friendly and welcoming, and mostly act like you are bothering them by coming in to eat. I really dislike spending my money somewhere I feel unwelcome. D & R on Creasy & 26 showed up, and we began to be able to get good, tasty, friendly BBQ again. :) They always smile, the food is always top notch, and I adore going to spend my money somewhere people seem to appreciate it. D & R BBQ for my money.

South Street is pretty good and it's unlike other eateries in Lafayette. It's different. It's kind of a hole in the wall. The menu is on the chalk board. You get self-serve sauces. You get choice of sides. You get choice of BBQ meats. You get choice of sandwiches, meat plates or dinners. The prices are OK, this is BBQ not some greasy frozen patty. The brisket ($2 upcharge) is tender and the pulled chicken is tasty. Good thick fries and cole slaw. I don't eat BBQ a lot but I would stop here again. It's nice to have some independent restaurants in town.

I love this place! Their baby back ribs are badass. They have a lot of BBQ sauces to choose from, but most of them suck. Their fries are good. The baked beans are alright, but too sweet.

the price of the food at this place is amazingly cheap. the portions are huge (full slab of the rib tips with two sides for less than $10 could feed 3) and the flavor of the bbq ribs was amazing! a great selection of different bbq sauces i'd definately come back here again... the corn bread is amazing also... yumm yumm

I've given this business too much business. I've tried really hard to like this place. What was once a staple in Lafayette, is now just a shadow of the past. I have probably visited the place 5 times in the last 3 months. The rib tips were gross and rubbery. I tried pawning them off to my table-- no positive reviews or "seconds" went to anyone. Their attempt at ribs was honestly quite sad too. Chain restaurants do a better job than this specialty spot. Their staff wasn't pleasant any time I've been there. One of my visits I stopped by to pick up food for a colleague and they wanted to kick me out because I had "to-go" food from Akropolis in hand. I didn't plan to eat there. I understand a fear of the health board, but I'm pretty sure you roll the dice and not appear to be a jerk in front of your other patrons. Customer service 101 would probably suggest you don't alienate your customers. I made no scene about it... but I'll vote in the future with my dollar and try to save you yours. If you're in the area, try their neighbors..Steak N Shake... instead of getting your hopes up for "BBQ".

Really best BBQ in town, stop there every time I go through Lafayette. Brisket sandwiches are awesome.. especially the horseradish sauce! Ribs are really good too! Everything I've had on the menu was delicious. Staff is rough around the edges but very nice! Very well priced.

Tried this place a couple months ago for the first time in several years. Years ago it was great, this time... terrible. The meat was dry (Kansas City brisket), sides were gross (as was the actual store, I have no idea how they don't fail their health department reviews in my opinion), and the staff was incredibly rude. Got the order to go and my father went in to pick it up only to return and immediately say the guy at the register was handling cash and food with his obviously really old gloves on. Eww. So soon after arriving home and hoping for the best I was very disappointed. I didn't even finish the meal. I was trying hard to give it a fair chance but it just wasn't good. It seems the sauces are the only thing that's remained the same. Being the only BBQ joint in town doesn't make it the "best". Once, it was pretty good, now it's just abysmal.

What a great find! Used the yelp app on my phone to locate it on a drive to U of I. Authentic BBQ, large portions and friendly helpful employees made it a great stop. We loved the sauce bar, with 8 different choices for BBQ sauce. I was glad we got there early, because it was full by the time we finished our meal. The place is very popular with the locals which says a lot.

Lafayette majorly lacks bbq options, but south street isn't worth wasting your time for. they put some sort of sauce on all of their meat and then you add your bbq sauce. I personally don't care for the flavor of the meat before I added sauce.
Best bbq in the Laf area, good selection of meats and sauces, sausage was eh, but the rest was really good, I will go back.

I wanted to find somewhere new to go for my birthday meal so I read the reviews here for the South Street Smoke House. The reviews are right on the money. The restaurant itself is pretty bare bones and nothing fancy, almost bordering on shabby, but clean.. The guys who take your order and prepare it, while not downright unfriendly, are very indifferent. They played some pretty darned good blues in the background, thankfully not blaring but at the time we were there you could only hears parts of it because they were BUSY!!! There is a reason for that. The food is very very good! I had the South Carolina pork and chicken sandwich with baked beans on the side and my husband had the baby back ribs and chicken basket with onion rings on the side. Two drinks. Came to 31.00 which was very reasonable. Trust me, most people probably can't eat all the food they give you. As busy as it was, were were served pretty quickly but by the time we left there were people lined up almost out the door. If you like bbq of all type, fried fish and GREAT onion rings, I suggest you go here. I will definitely go back.

So, where to begin. First off, I can't believe that so many people think that THIS is good BBQ...it's not. I have never had a more dry slice of brisket in my life...dry, gray, and flavorless. I understand now why they offer so many different takes on their brisket, it's because they want you to smother it in sauce or cheese!!! Good quality brisket is eaten alone or with a few sides, not smothered in BBQ sauce or flippin' cheese. The sides also leave much, MUCH to be desired. (seriously guys, a BBQ place shouldn't be getting their waffle fries from the local GFS...) Not very pleased with the customer service either, which is a bit of a switch up from the other reviews. On every single occasion that i've been to this place the person behind the counter could just care less. Maybe I just have happened to go in during the days when a disgruntled employee is greeting customers and taking their orders, or maybe not. Either way, I was NOT impressed with customer service any of the times i've visited South Street Smoke House. So there you have it, dry bland brisket (and pork for that matter too, I tried some of my wifes pulled pork, dry and bland...again it has to be SMOTHERED in sauce to make it palatable) and terrible customer service. I'll be taking my money elsewhere, too bad their aren't really any better spots in Lafayette for BBQ.

Excellent food. The brisket is amazing! Don't go too late or they will run out if it!

Here's the deal. It's messy. It's busy. It's really, really good. I had the brisket sandwich, fries and mac 'n cheese. The brisket was thick cut, plentiful and very tender. The fries were excellent. Even the mac 'n cheese was good...no really good. They are so busy (at lunch at least) that they seem overwhelmed. Get there early if you want a table as there is not much seating. I'll be back for sure.

All the people telling you this is unusually good BBQ are on to something. Yes, they use a metal smoker rather than an unruly pit, and the collard greens were a little porky for my taste, but the pulled pork sandwich is seriously good, and so are the sauces -- they have at least six, of which I tried four, and while they were a little hard to distinguish after a while, they all had a very nice heat and acidity. Perfect if you're in the area.
(4)
Rachel N.
Comfort food at it's finest!!! I've had the pulled pork, corn bread, onion rings, and french fries at various occasions. Excellence!! Staff looks like they came out of a heavy metal concert. I bring everyone that comes to visit here.

Smoking good barbecue in the greater Lafayette area. Definitely the place to go if you've got a barbecue fix. Savory try tips and brisket a wait you and your family. Enjoy the cornbread to wipe up your sauce.

Awesome BBQ. Had the two meat plate (beef/chicken) with baked beans and cole slaw. Staff friendly/courteous. Very casual atmosphere and clean.

Sad really. It used to be my favorite place. I was out of state for 6 years and returned to a sad example of what it once was. The staff was lethargic and the guy 'cooking' looked mad from having his smoke break cut short. The place was dirty and it looked like it was years of grime. The brisket used to be perfect, but is merely mediocre now. I doubt I will return. On the plus side... I did not get sick. Cheers

First time customer, ribs and chicken really good. Would be better if food crisped up a little. Almost like it was steamed for the last 20 min. Good baked beans and cornbread. I'll be going back next time I'm in town. I want to try the brisket.

Very good. Wish the pulled pork had a little more smoke flavor to it, but if I'm not smoking the pig myself, I'm always disappointed. Cole slaw ok, not great. Really liked the southern greens. Wish I had went earlier, as they were out of brisket.

A solid don't-wear-a-white-shirt BBQ joint. The sauces are on par and the food is reasonably priced. It can often be difficult to get seating, so first timers should seek to visit during not-peak hours.

All my American friends love it, not just the entrees, but also the sides! Pretty small but traditional place, but you can get very good BBQs in town. Kind of far away from Purdue, but you won't disappoint. We saw a lot of families go there for lunch too, apparently it's a family-friendly place.

There BBQ is the best around (or at least that I've found). The one downside is the size, when it gets crowded it becomes cramped inside. They do have the typical finds of a BBQ place and a few extras that surprised me. My favorite is the sandwich with onions and horseradish. It's a great place to check out when in the area.

This is my favorite choice for BBQ in the Lafayette area. As someone who grew up down south and knows good BBQ, I know how hard it is to find quality pulled pork in the northern states. However, South Street stands out. This place has good quality pulled pork and you get a decent amount for your money. They offer a variety of sauces which were all good. I am also a fan of their cornbread. If you're looking for some quality BBQ in a quaint little restaurant, look no further than South Street Smoke House. I highly recommend trying this place for an delectable, informal dinner.

Awesome barbeque made in the manner of several regions of the country. Brunswick stew, cornbread and greens are outstanding. Nice "joint" atmosphere with old school blues music on the sound system. The dudes working the counter are top notch. The Smokehouse is a five star oasis in an unlikely place.

Touch down in Lafayette and look on Yelp to try and find somewhere to try. Your efforts will be in vain. Almost no reviews anywhere, it's a shame. Found SSSH though and it seems like a small place with a lot of backbone to it. We walked into this place and was greeted with a large counter and to the right is a array of BBQ sauces in these huge jugs. To the left is a huge menu hand written on an equally large chalk board. I look to the back of the counter and I see racks of meat ready to be slow-cooked to perfection. I didn't get to try it all, but me and my buddy had the pulled pork and brisket. If only we had one more guy so some ribs could come into play. Next time methinks. Yay for brisket. I can never get enough of it. Tender and juicy. Sliced into long strips. A set of four? Or was it three? Whose counting...I was full anyways. Awesome with the fries and coleslaw. My friend got some pulled pork. I think the portion was about four ice cream scoops worth. Flavorful and juicy. His sides were corn break and potato salad which unfortunately didn't seem like something he enjoyed. I like this place! It doesn't try too hard to impress, but I don't really think it needs to.

Got the Baltimore Brisket with Fries and Pickle. Slow cooked meat over 15 hrs tastes really good, and the fries are delicious. A friend ordered Pulled Chicken Sandwich which was ordinary though. Could have had better selection of sauces. A 3.5 star from me.

I call this "pork from heaven". Rib tips, corn bread and spares are heavenly.

Stopped in on brief trip to West Lafayette and was not disappointed. Ordered the "Kansas City" - pulled pork/provolone/onion ring sandwich - and it made me so happy. A basic restaurant with excellent food.

Good BBQ. I had the brisket and the pulled pork. Large portion sizes, several different sides. Several different sauces to slather on the meats. The interesting thing to me is that this place was completely full of people of different ages. All the way children to retirees.

went here with a couple of friends. the place was packed when we got there and was packed when we left. I had the pulled pork sandwich with potato salad and a corn bread. my friends had the brisket sandwich and a chicken and ribs combo. we also split a basket of fried pickles. i come from the south so have had my share of BBQ. It was pretty good but lacked flavor I think personally. They had a variety of sauces to choose from - sweet&tangy, mild, and mike's spicy. The price was good and the portion was good but everything just kinda lacked a little flavor. I did add on mike's spicy sauce which made the sandwich better. All the meats were nice and tender though. The fried pickles were good too. The cornbread was decent too. all in all, not bad for lafayette. will most likely go back...

South Street Smokehouse is just a mile off I 65 in Lafayette and is a great place to stop when driving through. The St Louis ribs are tender and moist with a good smoke ring and served without sauce which i prefer so i can really taste the rib. They offer a variety of 8 sauces i liked the house hot and mikes spicy. I thought the brisket could have had more flavor and it was a little dry. Good sides were the chili and the baked beans with pieces of sausage in them, coleslaw was ok but stay away from the weird white bean side. If you need a break on I 65 pull off at 26 and try South Street Smokehouse.

I am an advocate for this place, even though I feel as though their quality has gone down from 2010-2012 (they changed their buns and portion size). Regardless, I enjoy the food. The Baltimore Brisket and a side of onion rings is my favorite. They also have good bbq chicken. Their ribs fall off of the bone, not my fav. I like ribs to be tender but still have a little tug to them. It is also super disapointing that there isn't any sauce cooked on anything. There is nothing better than ooey gooey caramelized bbq sauce sticking to the meat, instead you pump the sauce into cups and put it on yourself. Granite, I will give them credit that the sauces are good and they make them themselves. During rush hours it may be hard to find a table to eat at, but no reason to not be apart of the chaos. The best bbq joint in the Lafayette area.

After a long 12 hour drive from Central Jersey to the heart of America, I decided to search for some good local food. I figured with Indiana's huge agricultural industry, there had to be some good o' BBQ in the area. Ah, reminiscence of my time in college at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical Univeristy, a college town with a few hidden gems. I stumbled upon South Street Smoke House (hence forth known as SSSH), via Yelp (Thank you, my fellow Yelpers from IN keep up the Yelpin!) on my cell (Thank whoever invented wireless communication!) and figured why not, I mean I haven't had good local bbq on the dime since I left college in Texas. I was definitely not dissapointed, after I left the restaurant. I had myself some good pulled pork, pulled chicken, baked beans and awesome Texas Toast (Oh, Texas Toast, how I missed your toasted bready buttery texture and aroma!). My friends had some BBQ ribs and chicken, the taste was heavenly and glorious! The last thing you would be dissappointed about is the proportion of food they pass you, unless you are a huge PETA supporter, which, would make you anti-BBQ restaurants anyway. I highly suggest trying it out at least once, especially for you southwestern folks craving for some BBQ who are either studying in Purdue, transplanted there or just visiting your kids! It's not Texas BBQ, but it's pretty damn amazing midwest stuff. The ambience was great, felt like a real roadhouse and the guys over the counter were great, they even had a hint of the midwestern twang, though a little cranky, don't blame them, waking up early to make bbq for the masses ain't exactly anyones dream job if you're not the owner. The prices are economical, it's no Dinosaur BBQ in NYC, where you blow 50 bucks for a rack of ribs. A definite, 5 thumbs up and highly recommended!

My husband and I ate here once, and it was not great so we haven't been back. We both had the brisket, which was tough and rather dry. I am used to brisket being very tender and juicy. The sides were just okay. When we were there, they didn't have mac n cheese as a side (no mac n cheese with barbecue??) - not sure if they were just out of it or if they never have it, but that was disappointing. Their sauces were just okay, and didn't make up for the dry, tough meat.

Simply Amazing!!! Some of the best BBQ I've had and everything else I got was delicious as well. Only improvement they could make is turn of the heat because it was a little cold......

This is my favorite place to go for lunch. Go early or late because it is packed. I get the Kansas City Brisket sandwich that features a slice of provolone cheese and a fried onion ring on top. Lots of homemade sauces to choose from. I usually get the beans instead of fries. The greens are good too. But best of all is the blues music playing over the speakers. Blues and BBQ. Doesn't get any better that this.

Just came home from dinner at this establishment. Went on advice from a friend. Glad we listened. The only slight disappointment for my dinner was the chili. Baked beans are some of the best we've ever had. Pulled pork and pulled beef were both excellent in quality and quantity. Platters start at $6.50 and sandwiches are also available.

Traveling Yelp Engineers know what's up. They found this meat house and I followed. With 30 minutes 'til closing, the guys at the Smoke House were down for a major 4 Man Mission: *Two full orders of ribs (12 St. Louis, 12 Baby Back). *The 4 sides (that corn bread was better than any I've ever had. They must have Grandma make it). *Then, things just got crazy: -Fried Tenderloin & side -Fried Catfish & side -Brisket Sandwich w/ two onion rings on it with greens -Meat sampler basket situation with mounds of brisket & pulled pork with slaw. Other than the fringe players of fries & green, everything was devoured. Carnage like this hasn't been seen in West La since Breesus was quarterbacking. Bones strewed, cobs chewed, 4 men gettin' meaty in the good way. The Smoke House's lineup of sauces were stellar options in that they offered something for everyone. They have two main sides of the aisle: ketchup based & smokier vinegar based options. Hot Mike was my favorite -- somuchso I was on the brink of having to break out a cot to sleep at the smoke house I ate so much and Hot Mike (not my tablemate Mike, Hot Mike the sauce) induced me to have a rib coda slathered in the sauce. All was pretty quiet in the restaurant as they were wrapping up the work day, and were happy to have us stick around and get sticky fingered. Inside, thanks to the over-the-top flavor of the St. Louis Spares my tastebuds were rocking to a Led Zeppelin two-night stand in Mexico City. You might think you'd leave in a meat coma and have food babies named Hot Mike and Saint Louis, but in fact your endorphins will be so high you can drive through the night back to Indy wondering why you didn't take another half order to go. Note: order the deep fried pecan pie when you order your dinner because you'll be weighed down by your awesome meal and won't find the courage to get back up.

It's weird. In my naïve flights, I kind of imagine every town having one of these places, the long-standing institution that tricks you into thinking that here, just HERE, they've somehow perfected the art. But then I eat here and forget that thought, realizing that, yeah, South Street basically has. They do one thing, and they do it so well that you think they've been around forever. Other towns have no idea what they're missing, and people visiting from other towns should seek this place as one of the town's great prides and try to eat as many different things as possible. They're all so good. I promise.

BEST place in town and surrounding towns, to get BBQ!!! I have traveled to many BBQ capitals in our nation and have seen & tasted the differences in BBQ's around the U.S. When friends visit me in Lafayette, most of the time I will bring them here to South Street Smoke House. I've had friends from St. Louis, Memphis, Georgia, Texas, and the Carolina's come to visit. They all were very impressed we had such a good BBQ place located here! I have yet to find something here that I didn't like!

Very good brisket and chicken -- delicious, in fact. The cornbread is also quite tasty, but the other sides we tried -- coleslaw, Burnswick stew and mac and cheese -- were forgettable. Two of the sauces were good -- the other two not so much.

SSS was at one time a 2 or 3 or 4 times a week visit for my wife and I. We'd stop on the way home from work and have a meal while prepping for the night's activities. We don't go as often now (we're healthier now, and SSS doesn't fit into our diet easily), but it's still damn good. Second best BBQ in Lafayette for sure. No matter what you get: ribs, brisket, chicken, pulled pork, or one of their many sandwiches, it will be good and plentiful. Another big highlight is THEY MAKE THEIR OWN SAUCES. And they are good. A BBQ joint that uses packaged sauces is a little odd to me - BBQ is about doing it all yourself IMO. SSS makes their own. And they do it well. Prices are good, service is fast and friendly. I'd be giving SSS 5 stars, but they made a petty and gloaty post on their blog when a competing business shut down a few years ago. Lafayette's restaurant community has always been friendly and cooperative, not petty and hyper-competitive. So, for that, they lose a star.

Hubby came home from work & just can't stop talking about how good his co-worker's take out BBQ smells like during lunch time ... And so he says "we need to try it" ... First of, i agree, the pulled pork was good... But then what else ...???? I read in one of the reviews here that a good BBQ place shouldn't just be about the pork but should also give some effort to the sides and other fixes... Well he is right !:) went here with a smile and left the place thinking " that was it? ???? "

Tender brisket, good pulled pork, smokey turkey, and spicy rubbed chicken. And fried catfish too. Really, where else are you gonna go in Lafayette for real local BBQ? I really like the selection of homemade sauces that you can slather (or not) over your meat choices. Mike's Hot is my current favorite and last visit I could only watch in an out-of-body sort of way as I dipped my fries, my onion rings, my pickles and my 1/4 chicken in the stuff. And the sides are pretty good too: standard creamy coleslaw, seasoned french fries, buttery cornbread with real corn kernels poking out. Yeah, I'm a fan.

I cant believe I never went here while I was at Purdue. The BBQ is amazing and by far the best (if not the only) in town. They have like 7 different kinds of BBQ and hot sauce. When I saw that i knew I was in the right place. Brisket was great, texas toast was so-so I would go for fries next time you get more and they are good. Also the cornbread was pretty tasty too!! Also it can be busy during dinnertime, luckily we beat the crowd coming a bit early.

People are always shocked at how amazing the food here is. It is has been my family's favorite place since they opened and I absolutely recommend you to go there. The portions are amazing and sauce on their pulled pork is out of this world. They offer delicious side options including cornbread, baked beans, and all the perfect things to complete your meal. It is a smaller place so it can get crowded quick but carry out is always an option!

Amazing KC brisket sandwich. I've eaten this 5+ times and it always delivers. Complete with provolone cheese and an onion ring. Add your own sauce and enjoy. Anytime I am in town this place is a must!!

I had chicken there several years ago and it was fork-tender (just like the Boston Market style) which I personally don't like for chicken. So I always refused to go back to South Street Smoke House. But I am glad that I gave another shot today. I guess I looked very confused when I ordered the food, the guy who worked there actually offered me like 3 ounces of rib tip to sample. It was delectable! Okay, to keep this review succinct, look at the summary below: 1. Rib Tip (5/5 yummyness) + Veggie Stew (side) + corn bread (side) $12.50 (it's like a 2-people portion) 2. Pulled Pork (4/5 yummyness) + Coleslaw (side) + I-forgot-the-name $6.50 Conclusion: Inexpensive and tasty!

Best BBQ in the area for sure.... I love their sandwiches and the sides are amazing as well. I usually get the Kansas City with mac and cheese..... Soooo goood!!! The food is served super fast and the price is very good. The have five or six different BBQ sauces to choose from; all of them very good.... It's not the best BBQ ever but I am pretty sure the best in the area.

If you're looking for BBQ this is the place to go. They have a variety on sandwiches and plates to choose from, and they seem to have every permutation of BBQ covered. Having recently moved here from rural South Carolina, I was glad to find a BBQ place that was up to snuff!

The meat is good, but the sides are awful and the employees are surly.

Best BBQ around. Excellent food, and nice big portions. Great sweet tea also. CONS: Very dirty (they dont clean the tables frequently), small location with very limited seating. Don't go here if you are in a hurry or with a large group of people. Lots of "mutants" working there...and by mutants I mean people with goofy tattoos, missing teeth, and lots of piercings. More conservative people may be put off by that.

For Lafayette, Indiana, the South Street Smoke House is a winner. Compared to a more venerable BBQ joint in, say, Austin, Memphis or Kansas City -- well, there's not much of a comparison. But for Lafayette, Indiana... this is about as good as it gets. My wife have been a number of times and have tried everything from the ribs to the brisket to pulled pork and beef. It's a bit pricey, but the order-and-pay-at-the-counter ... paper-towels-rolls-are-at-your-table ... sweet-tea's-over-there ambience is very nice. (It's also usually packed, so go expecting a bit of a line and hope to snag a table.) The meats are done rather well (I'm not a huge fan of their ribs, but they're alright, I guess) and the sides are good -- I usually go with the baked beans and fries, while my wife is a bit more partial to the creamy cole slaw. The homemade sauces are great and offer a nice variety of sweet, heat, tang, spice and vinegar content. And one tip -- go early for the brisket. Or else you won't get any. (This has happened to me too many times.)

Great BBQ - pulled pork was great, the fried pecan pie was amazing!

I've been here a few times and just now decided to write a review. I was surprised to see how empty they were when my friend and I got there just before 6pm, but the place definitely filled up as we ate. I decided to go with a pulled pork sandwich with fries, though I really wanted mac and cheese--something not on the menu there. We also had fried pickles as an appetizer, which were whole pickle spears fried and put in a basket with a cup of ranch dressing. I think I prefer Scotty's dill chips in terms of the breading/pickle ratio, but these weren't bad. I was disappointed in the pulled pork sandwich. I thought a BBQ joint would be the best place to get a pulled pork sandwich, but I found theirs to be just mediocre. I should probably fess up to the fact that my heart will always belong to a small, hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint in Newport, Arkansas. Nothing will ever match the glorious barbecue I experienced there. The fries at South Street are nothing to write home about--just your average fries. I will give kudos on the range of self-serve sauces they have available. The labeled flavors seem a little misleading (the mild tasted spicier than the hot), but I favored what they called the "sweet and tangy." Good for spreading on the sandwich and for dipping fries. I feel that things are a little pricey for what you get. My meal ended up being around $10 for a drink, a sandwich, and some fries--none of which were spectacular to begin with. Also, make sure you're aware of the limited parking options.

So I was getting my tire repaired at Tire Barn ( yelp.com/biz/tire-barn-w… ). There was a McDonalds across the street and I was considering grabing some food there while I waited. But first I pulled out my trusty Yelp app. It said there is a BBQ joint within walking distance. So after a bit of wandering around (and almost getting run over trying to cross street where pedestrians were not even an after-thought) I ended up at this place. It was solid. For 15 bucks I got more ribs than I could finish in two meals, and two sides. I would be lucky to find ribs this good, or even ribs less that twice this price in San Francisco. The fries were pretty good, but the beans were very meh (-1 one star). The sweet tea was awesome... reminded me of being in North Carolina again. The service was friendly. So glad I ended up here. Thank you Yelp app.

Possibly one of the best BBQ joints I have been to, they hold their own against the best TX, KS, MO, SC and Chicago has to offer. I have been dreaming of going back for quite some time now! This is definitely an above average BBQ place by any measure.

Where does one stop to eat between Chicago and Indianapolis whilst driving? Duh........here! This place takes their BBQ seriously. I have been to the low country for some sweet Carolina BBQ. I've been to Austin for some brisket and sausage at the Salt Lick. Kansas City for Arthur Bryants, Oklahoma Joes and Jack Stack. The bottom-line is that this place stacks up. I have now visited South Street Smoke House multiple times and have never been disappointed. Brisket - solid, Pulled pork - solid, sides - solid. do yourself a favor and get some. The lunch hour seems to get a little hectic, so if you can find yourself here between 2-5pm - you will be the big winner. Extra bonus - they make their own sauces - and most are really good! Cheers!

Really good place if your a meat lover. The serving sizes are always great for the amount you pay. They have a variety of sauces to go to. For a college student with a car, this is always a good spot to hit up once or twice a week. They are usually really friendly here. Lost my card here and when I called to ask about it, they immediately said are you the person who lost the red debit master card. It should be 4.5 / 5 stars, but apparently Yelp doesn't let me do that. Only reason i wouldn't get it a five is cause I have recieved some really dry meat sometimes, but that's what the sauces are for!

Didn't think they offered anything memorable here. Had the ribs with all the different sauces. The only good sides were the fries and cornbread. Southern greens and potato salad were terrible.

I've been all over the country and this joint hold up against them all. Kudo's to the ribs and brisket. I wanted to try the pulled pork but I'm not a fan of sauce already mixed into the pulled pork. I'll have to try that later. Brisket was very flavorful and moist. Not overly smoked at all. Nice fat carmelized on the piece I had made me want to slap my mama it was so good. Smoked turkey was excellent too! I'll be back for more of the other meats soon. But , man, the ribs are excellent smoked all day tenderness. They have beef tips and baby back ribs too. You can't get the baby backs until after 5 pm and they go fast. Sides I preferred are the greens and the corn bread. Nice flavor to the greens . I've had some bad experiences and their greens were top notch in flavor, had the smoky bacon flavor , some mustard or vinegar and I detected a little pepper too. Very nice. Greens aren't easy to make either. Skip the fries. Not sure why but they seem to be a popular side with the locals. I will review more sides next visit.

I have eaten here countless times. It is one of those places I try to take people when I am in the area. There are a few little tricks about this place. Get in between rushes or be ready to grab a table as soon as one is available. Also, get in early as sometimes (not frequently, but sometimes) they run out of popular items such as brisket. This place gets very busy for good reason. If looking for ribs, this place will get you filled up for a reasonable price and the rib tips are exceptional (and also served in very large portions). Sauces are mostly vinegar based but all are delicious. There are at least 6 different sauces in varying degrees of sweetness and/or spiciness. An additional note, don't miss the fried pickles. The breading is actually well executed and goes well with any of the barbecue sauces. A warning though, they come out piping hot and the urge to eat the immediately must be fought down for the sake of taste buds.

Best place for BBQ in the area. Ribs are really great, when available. Pulled pork has never let me down. Sides are not large but somehow just the right amount. Greens are good, although I find the beans a little bland. All in all ribs are our reliable favorites.

I wish yelp had half stars, id put this at 3.5 but I gave them the benefit of the doubt as I havent tried their whole menu yet. They have a pretty great turkey (which is oddly my favorite of bbq'd meats). BBQ isnt BBQ without a good selection of sauces and South Street has a good number of sauces, all of which are very tasty. This is a nice little gem in Lafayette and id suggest checking it out.

Best BBQ in the area. The brisket is fantastic and their sauces are great. The fresh dropped fries compliment the meats perfectly (though a bit salty). This is one of my favorite places for lunch in town and take-out. I just wish they did burnt ends!

The food here is great. Pretty much everything I have tried is worth coming back for. The pulled pork is awesome - the Kansas City brisket sandwich is unbelievable! I'd easily give this 5 stars if it were not for two things . . . The carpet in there is about as gross as it gets. If your shoes aren't tied tight, they are likely to stay stuck to the floor when you walk by. Also, from 11:30 - 1:00 forget about finding a seat. I know this is a good thing for SSSH but it has has turned me away on multiple occasions. Expansion and a little cleaning would put me back in this place once a week. As it stands now I go once a month. ******************************UPDATE 2/1/11****************************** The carpet is gone! No more nasty, stick carpet. It is now a tile-like surface that can be mopped. Nice move SSSH, expand your seating a little and you got yourself a 5th star! ******************************UPDATE 2/1/11******************************

alright, so this place fluctuates. sometimes its awesome, other times its just okay, even a little dry. their sandwhiches still seem to be the best deal. their complete offering include ribs, pulled pork, chicken and i believe some other cut of pork. if youre into ribs, this place isnt any cheaper, but it might be better. try the different bbq sauces. they make the sandwhiches a lot better.

Wow this place rocks! We pass through Lafayette often and I used yelp to find this gem. My wife and I both love smoked foods and this is one of the very best smokehouse restaurant that we have ever found. She had the rib tips on both visits this past weekend with cornbread and french fries, while I couldn't pass up the brisket sandwich with home made potato salad and beans. The brisket could not have been more tender and full of smoke. I tasted the rib tips, and I have never been a fan because they are more fatty and the cartilage is a turn off, but the taste was spot on. I was disappointed in the lack of baby back ribs until dinner time, but I will just have to adjust our travel time so that we get in the area later in the day. I am looking forward to tasting the other offerings on the menu in the near future.

Really good BBQ - the best in town, and among the best I've encountered in general. I really like the brisket sandwich but haven't found a menu item that I didn't like. Good sweet tea too. They have several sauce choices - "smokehouse" in hot and mild, and "Mike's", a darker, smokier option in hot and mild as well as others. The only downside to the smokehouse that I can think of is that they are closed on sunday.

This is probably the best BBQ spot in Indiana. The beef brisket is my favorite, but the chicken is also good. Be sure to get here early for Lunch because it gets crowded quickly.

All the people raving about this place have obviously never had real low n slow barbecue cooked on a backyard smoker. This is OKAY barbecue, but nothing special. The brisket is their best meat. Actually, it's very good, which is why I give them 3 stars instead of 2. The pulled pork, pulled beef, and chicken is hardly up to any real barbecue standard. The smoked sausage is terrible. Poor quality meats, which I assume is why they are able to keep prices low. The ribs are hit and miss. Sometimes they are quite good, but usually they are dried out and flavorless. Where this place really falls short are the side dishes. They truly are abysmal. The bbq beans suck and the southern greens are pure vomit. They don't do mac n cheese (can't call yourself a barbecue place without doing mac n cheese. Sorry.) The best part about this place is their barbecue sauce, which is truly excellent (better than what I've had in Memphis), and if you want to buy some to take home, it's cheaper than anything in the store.

I severely dislike BBQ, but this place is so AMAZING! It is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I would eat here everyday. The homemade sauces are to die for, their sweet tea is delicious, their lemonade is spectacular, and the pulled pork is rivaled by none. This is the place right here!

Come hungry and plan on taking some home for your next few meals. The pulled pork is perfect -- and plentiful. It's my personal favorite, but they serve several different styles of bbq and different meats -- from chicken to baby back ribs and everything between. They heap the meat on a toasted bun, toss in a basketful of not-too-greasy fries and let you pick from a wide selection of in-house bbq sauce. Try them all. I'm a fan of Mike's Spicy sauce. The atmosphere is super low-key: Pull up to a table, grab a paper towel off the roll and dig in (don't worry they include wet wipes). Keep in mind, tables can be sparse during busy peak dinner or lunch hours. Also, they're closed on Sunday.

Whew! Every town should have a barbecue place as good as this, right in their own back yard. I'll just have to savor the memory of South Street, until my next trip out to Lafayette. They don't specialize in any particular style of BBQ...They do them all really well. My beef brisket was just what good smoked meat should be: juicy, tender and flavorful without needing any sauce. Not that the sauces aren't really good, though. There's a dark, sweet one, full of great molasses flavor. And there are tomato-y, thinner, hotter ones, too. You serve yourself from big plastic jugs with spigots at the counter. A friend of mine had the Carolina style smoked chicken sandwich, served with cole slaw on top. Great, vinegar-y sauce. Excellent potato salad. Wish I had tried more of their side dishes...They're all under a dollar!

Decent bbq place for lafayette, pulled pork is always good here but the brisket can be very dry sometimes so its a hit or miss. Sweet tea is usually pretty good for the midwest

Great bbq. What you would expect from a bbq place in terms of both food and decor. I've never been disappointed here and have tried much of the menu. If only this place were open later since I think they close before 10. I'm taking a couple of stars away from this place in this edit. After writing my first review I got a craving so I drove out on a Sunday early in the evening to find out they were closed. No big deal there are a lot of stores that close for Sunday around here. I tried again on Tuesday I showed up at 8pm- they're open until 8:30 - and got a terrible attitude for showing up this late. I could understand the attitude if I showed up at 11:45 on a Friday when they closed at 12:00 but 8 o'clock? The food was still good but the service is seriously lacking.

Some of the best BBQ I've ever had - South Street does it right! I'm a huge fan of their St. Louis Ribs, the meat falls right off the bone and is so flavorful that sauce is not really needed. I've also had their BBQ sandwich as well as the brisket - everything is delicious. Their sides are amazing as well - I highly recommend the onion rings, the french fries, the baked beans, their specialty stews... the list goes on. Great food at a good price, great portions and a down-home feel. One of my fave restaurants in the area!

Like meat? You need to go to this place. The highlight is the BBQ, all varieties of which are wonderful. We're particularly fond of the brisket. (And there goes my mouth watering as I type!) The sides are interesting as well, including fried pickles (better than they sound), beans and corn bread. We have yet to have anything there that we didn't really enjoy. Quantities are big. If you're with a group that includes various size appetites, you'll do well to combine forces.

It's probably the best BBQ place you can find in Lafayette. Price is reasonable.

The only real problem I have with this place is the parking lot. If the restaurant is busy, there is no place to park. LOVE the carolina style pulled pork sandwich. The cole slaw is actually good here too. The ribs are yummy and most of the time the tea (sweet tea) is faboo. Sometimes you catch the tea person on a bad day and it tastes like a sock, but most of the time it's a great glass. The guys that work there are always friendly. It's almost like going to a friends house that happens to make some great BBQ. Try everything. It's all good here.

The food is good...sometimes. The trashcan is always overflowing and makes me feel like it is unclean sometimes and if it's busy a seat can be hard to come by. I would recommend the sandwiches over the ribs and the greens and potato salad are always good.

I love this place, the food is sooo good and its cheap. Get the fried pickles!! Only 4 stars because it's not the cleanest place I've ever been to...

Traveling cross-country from Ohio to Chicago, I broke the trip up in West Lafayette to meet a friend. He recommended we meet here. We arrived just in time for the lunch rush, and the clientele was all sorts. The menu offered a great deal of choice of the different styles of barbeque. I had the Kansas City brisket, cole slaw on the side. The sandwich was ample but not overwhelming, and the meat flaky and thick cut in just the right way (I didn't spend time picking fat out of my teeth). I liked being able to pick among six different house sauces (and was warned that the hots were very hot). The cole slaw was a little sharp (I prefer it sweeter). The portions were just right--I was full but not sleepy on the road after I left. The price was inexpensive too. Definitely a local place, and a wonderful treasure for the city. If you're cranking out miles on the highway and from out of the area, it is worth the extra drive in beyond the usual chains to find this gem. You'll be happy you did.

got the Rib Tips full but ate about 70 %. was hard and dry so it was hard to down 'em. maybe i'll try it again in the future but wasn't GREAT on the first go. amount is good for the price you pay of course.

I really enjoy this place. this place keeps getting better. it is my fourth year at college and i still eat there every other week minimum. I havent moved past the sandwiches on the menu. I would recommend the fries to go with a sandwich. The sweet tea is also very good but if you dont want sweet tea the soda is good as well. the only down side i see in this place is that their sauses are not the best i have ever had. but it really doesnt matter went you really dont need to add sause. the sause is mainly for the fries in my case.

(4)J S.

(1)Nathan F.
One of the best brisket places in Indiana! All business staff that makes delicious food!
(5)Elisa G.
Went there on a Saturday night at 8 pm and htey close at 10pm... they only had pulled pork and beef left. nothing else... really really sad! And, teh worst part is that they were also watery and bed! Also, we paid 1.30$ for a Southern toast... seriously!?!?! overrated!!
(1)Tina J.
Excellent tender brisket! I enjoyed my brisket sandwich with a side of cornbread at lunch today. I recommend this place for lunch. As another review mentioned they are pretty popular, so get there at a decent time to get what you want (and a seat).
(5)Deidra W.
(5)Eric S.
(5)Lexi J.
This place was SO good! Definitely worth your time to check it out. Our entire family got different meals but everything was amazing. We loved the variety of BBQ sauces!
(5)Rick M.
(4)Madeleine J.
Delicious, quality BBQ and very friendly staff! Highly recommend the pulled pork sandwich and baby back ribs with Mike's Mild sauce.
(5)Don G.
We have been all over the nation for barbecue. We were pleasantly surprised when we found this place recently. Great food and a pretty decent atmosphere. I would like to see them do something different with their macaroni and cheese. Brisket is awesome !
(4)Jessica D.
(4)Jennifer P.
(2)Andy R.
(4)Julie L.
I love this place! Their baby back ribs are badass. They have a lot of BBQ sauces to choose from, but most of them suck. Their fries are good. The baked beans are alright, but too sweet.
(5)charlotte s.
the price of the food at this place is amazingly cheap. the portions are huge (full slab of the rib tips with two sides for less than $10 could feed 3) and the flavor of the bbq ribs was amazing! a great selection of different bbq sauces i'd definately come back here again... the corn bread is amazing also... yumm yumm
(5)James M.
Easily the best BBQ in town. I have been to KC and they have nothing on the Smoke House.

Unbelievalbe BBQ

Impressed. Can only handle Half Rack ribs, barely. Hot sauce with them Ribs is awesome.
(5)Olga S.

(1)Mari R.
(4)Misty T.
Lafayette majorly lacks bbq options, but south street isn't worth wasting your time for. they put some sort of sauce on all of their meat and then you add your bbq sauce. I personally don't care for the flavor of the meat before I added sauce.
(1)Heather R.
This was the first time in about 6 years that I had been back. It used up be very good, but has gone downhill significantly. The employees didn't seem very happy or overly friendly. The baked beans had no flavor and my fiancé's Mac and cheese was very bland. The half rack of baby back ribs I had didn't fall off the bone like people said in their reviews, and they tasted old. My fiancé's brisket tasted like plain roast beef, and we know brisket...it's not supposed to taste like that! The fried pickles and French fries were delicious! We were very disappointed and it's sad that the fried food was the best thing at a BBQ joint. I'll stick to Bub's BBQ in DeMotte!
(2)Robert C.
Best bbq in the Laf area, good selection of meats and sauces, sausage was eh, but the rest was really good, I will go back.
(4)Nora P.
Great BBQ - we both had the Carolina style pulled pork sandwich.
(4)Doug S.
Generally great food. Occasionally meat may be dry or portions a little small. Definitely the best baby back ribs & brisket in town.
(4)Melanie B.

(1)Andy M.
Outstanding ribs! Perfectly smoked. Great variety of sauces. Fries were excellent. Highly recommended!
(5)Dani S.
Excellent food. The brisket is amazing! Don't go too late or they will run out if it!
(4)Greg M.
(4)William B.
(4)Rachel N.
Comfort food at it's finest!!! I've had the pulled pork, corn bread, onion rings, and french fries at various occasions. Excellence!! Staff looks like they came out of a heavy metal concert. I bring everyone that comes to visit here.
(5)Shawn P.
Smoking good barbecue in the greater Lafayette area. Definitely the place to go if you've got a barbecue fix. Savory try tips and brisket a wait you and your family. Enjoy the cornbread to wipe up your sauce.
(5)John R.
Awesome BBQ. Had the two meat plate (beef/chicken) with baked beans and cole slaw. Staff friendly/courteous. Very casual atmosphere and clean.
(4)GRETCHEN B.

(4)Michael L.
Very good. Wish the pulled pork had a little more smoke flavor to it, but if I'm not smoking the pig myself, I'm always disappointed. Cole slaw ok, not great. Really liked the southern greens. Wish I had went earlier, as they were out of brisket.
(4)Mike S.
A solid don't-wear-a-white-shirt BBQ joint. The sauces are on par and the food is reasonably priced. It can often be difficult to get seating, so first timers should seek to visit during not-peak hours.
(4)Carol T.
Excellent food today as always. The best in the area.
(5)Justin V.
Great food! We were given recommendations by the staff as we are from out of state. Loved the meats and the sauces! Thanks!!
(5)Corina P.
Great BBQ. Be sure to come here early (at least at 12 O' Clock) because the baby ribs are sold out soon.
(5)Victoria X.
All my American friends love it, not just the entrees, but also the sides! Pretty small but traditional place, but you can get very good BBQs in town. Kind of far away from Purdue, but you won't disappoint. We saw a lot of families go there for lunch too, apparently it's a family-friendly place.
(4)Gwen D.
(4)Zach F.
(4)Don S.
(5)Wes W.
(4)Subashish S.
(3)Sharon R.
I call this "pork from heaven". Rib tips, corn bread and spares are heavenly.
(5)Jan E.
Stopped in on brief trip to West Lafayette and was not disappointed. Ordered the "Kansas City" - pulled pork/provolone/onion ring sandwich - and it made me so happy. A basic restaurant with excellent food.
(5)CK A.
Good BBQ. I had the brisket and the pulled pork. Large portion sizes, several different sides. Several different sauces to slather on the meats. The interesting thing to me is that this place was completely full of people of different ages. All the way children to retirees.
(4)Tao Tao W.
went here with a couple of friends. the place was packed when we got there and was packed when we left.
(3)Kris L.
(3)Nina R.

(4)Mel S.
(2)Scott C.
Simply Amazing!!! Some of the best BBQ I've had and everything else I got was delicious as well. Only improvement they could make is turn of the heat because it was a little cold......
(5)Tom M.
(5)Kelly J.

I promise.
(5)Jesse B.
(4)Richard H.
Very good brisket and chicken -- delicious, in fact. The cornbread is also quite tasty, but the other sides we tried -- coleslaw, Burnswick stew and mac and cheese -- were forgettable. Two of the sauces were good -- the other two not so much.
(3)Jon C.
(4)Diane R.
(2)Xopher D.
(4)Roy H.
(4)Michelle L.
(4)Scott L.
Amazing KC brisket sandwich. I've eaten this 5+ times and it always delivers. Complete with provolone cheese and an onion ring. Add your own sauce and enjoy. Anytime I am in town this place is a must!!
(5)Ng T.
(5)Juan A.
(4)Daniel L.
If you're looking for BBQ this is the place to go. They have a variety on sandwiches and plates to choose from, and they seem to have every permutation of BBQ covered. Having recently moved here from rural South Carolina, I was glad to find a BBQ place that was up to snuff!
(5)Jen B.
The meat is good, but the sides are awful and the employees are surly.
(2)Nicholas H.
(4)Nick R.
(4)Mike M.
Great BBQ - pulled pork was great, the fried pecan pie was amazing!
(5)Kristen H.

(4)Mike S.
Possibly one of the best BBQ joints I have been to, they hold their own against the best TX, KS, MO, SC and Chicago has to offer. I have been dreaming of going back for quite some time now! This is definitely an above average BBQ place by any measure.
(4)Kevin L.
Cheers!
(4)Yuedong L.

This is a nice little gem in Lafayette and id suggest checking it out.

the best that's for sure wish they had this place in cville

If you can find a place to sit during lunch, you won't want to ever stop eating the delicious food.

It's worth the extra 5 minute drive from I65. Good atmosphere and a much better alternative to the fast food popourri.
