I had a coney dog with onion rings and a root beer. It was a fantastic meal and very cost-friendly.

HAVE AGAIN: The root beer is very good. NOT HAVE AGAIN: The coney dog was good for a light lunch, but not good enough to order again on my infrequent trips. I've only had one coney dog here and it was 20 years ago. But I well remember it and really wanted to come back, which I did today. Maybe my tastes have change, but it was good. NEXT TIME: I'll order a burger and root beer float!

I don't see why people rave about this place. Probably because it's local. They sell OK chili dogs, root beer, and burgers. The food tastes like amusement park quality dogs, and burgers. I don't recommend their fries, though.
(3)
Melissa N.
What a fantastic place! Quick service, awesome root beer and all the food is ridiculously cheap! My only complaint is they only took cash.
(5)
Jessica W.
The servers were very friendly and quick. The food was not as great as I was hoping. I've definitely had better chili dogs. The french fries were unsalted and tasted just like the kind that you get out of the freezer section of the grocery store. The root beer, however, was GREAT! Probably some of the best I have had. Order a large and they serve it in a frosty glass mug. Overall, I might stop by again on a summer night, but only for a root beer float.

Try as I might, I can't think of anything bad to write about Dog-N-Suds. The Boilermaker (named for Purdue Boilermakers!) is one of my favorite burgers of all time. The frosted mug of root beer is to die for. Prices are pretty comparable to other fast food chains. I love the old fashioned aspect of the drive-in and the car hops are always cheerful and give good service. Everything is good here and I sure do miss it when they close for the season.
(5)
Amanda S.
Cute ambinance, its like an old drive in vibe. The food is decent, nothing to write home about. On game day the boiler maker specials are half off. You can get a burger, fries, and cole slaw for less than $4.

We were really looking for a nice nostalgic lunch, unfortunately, the only good things we can say about this place are about the service, and root beer. My wife's "hot" dog came to us cold, and the bun felt like it just came out of the refrigerator. The burger I had was the culinary equivalent of a McDonald's cheeseburger, with thicker pickles. The cheese wasn't even melted, and was stone cold as well. It would seem they're more concerned with quantity over quality. I don't think we'll ever patronize this place again.

Dog-N-Suds used to be a large chain of drive-ins. They've but a few locations remaining, but have had some recent expansion into West Lafayette and Kokomo. For some reason, this is among the few places that might be on a Lafayette bucket list. With that said, I can see why people go for the place, but to me it's so-so. Not bad, but it's hard to work myself up for what seems to be standard fare. The service is fine, the food is decent and reasonably priced, but that's about it. I suppose the nostalgia of the place speaks for something, but it's hard to get excited about eating in my automobile somehow being nostalgic. Also, they close for the winter, with their lot being used in December for Christmas trees. That's probably a good idea given the weather and the accommodations. It's fine, but not a place that I can work up a lot of enthusiasm for.

Danon H.
I have been to this place several times. The food was pretty good but my favorite thing was the Root beer. Probably the best Root beer I have ever had. The service was good. Its an old school drive in restaurant. Not something I am use to, But it does bring the cool factor up a notch. So in short, this is a grade A place to experience that old Americana feeling of a bygone era.
(4)
Kiarash Z.
I normally wouldn't advocate for a chain over a local legend, but this basically is an awful Sonic. A forced folkisness betrayed by IRS-level bureaucracy. Don't get huffy if I can't figure out your car side terminals. Don't get frustrated when what I ordered doesn't match what you heard through your antiquated audio. And 30 cents for ranch? Jeeeeebus
(2)
Zach F.
This place is pretty cool. It's like a Sonic drive-in but better. For the longest time, they didn't accept credit cards so I didn't eat there that often. The hot dogs are pretty good and so are the sandwiches. However, the must get item is the root beer float. This thing was great. The root beer alone was pretty dang good, but adding their ice cream to it made it delicious. The prices are fairly reasonable and the service has always been good. Furthermore, I have never had an issue with any of the items I've ordered. I would highly recommend coming here on a nice summer evening and enjoying a quick dinner with a root beer float to top it off.
(4)
Sharon R.
TRY THIS ROOT BEER. I have converted many root beer haters to lovers because of this place. The food is fine, but come for a large glass of root beer (the large comes in a frosted mug). For food, I usually get the Burger with coney sauce.

Root beer, out in the sunshine, quick and go, absolutely good food and fast service!

The Boilermaker is the best burger in town (93.7% of time); the fries are tied with Culver's as the best in town; the root beer is definitely #1 even though XXX is pretty darn good; and the cole slaw is incredible! So, yah, I like this place!
(5)
Alexander B.
Best root beer I have ever had. If you go, order the large root beer so that they give you he frosted mugs. The burgers are small and alright, but my reason for going is always the root beer.

It's a good place for what it serves. Personally, I don't understand the hype about coney cheese dogs. It's good to have once a while, but not all the time. They are open seasonally, basically just not during the winter. The first day they open in the spring, it's super packed! Cops are there to direct service and they have to turn down costumers sometimes. During the summer they have a really good orange cream soda float, but that is only available for roughly a month, so take advantage!
(4)
Tom M.
Another Lafayette institution. People can't wait for DnS to open in the spring. Opening week is so busy that they have to hire off-duty policemen to direct traffic. If you don't like eating in your car, there is picnic shelter and you can order food from there. The hotdogs are the signature item, but the side to get is deep-fried mushrooms. Hamburgers are good too. Root beer comes in a frosty mug. A must stop for a bite to eat in Lafayette.

I enjoyed their onion rings, corn dogs, and chili-cheese dogs but I felt like everything that I consumed I could make at home or get almost anywhere else... Unfortunately I do not like Root beer... :( Dog and Suds is known around town for their mugs of good root beer. So if you like root beer, this seems to be the place for you to go in Lafayette, IN. Everything I saw on the menu was priced extremely low! That works out great for anyone with a lot of mouths to feed or one mouth but feels like you have more than one stomach to fill. Lol.
(2)
Michelle L.
Dog N Suds is so classic and the food and root beer is one of a kind. It truly is the perfect summer spot for lunch or dinner. I love coney cheese dogs so that is what I stick with but everything else on the menu is also phenomenal from what I hear. You can buy the root beer in liters to take home which you definitely should but if you are eating there you HAVE to get it in the frosted mug, it makes it even better!
(4)
Ng T.
I have been there 4, 5 times. I had hot dogs and burgers there, I think they were just okay. I don't understand why people like it so much. Root beer was freezing cold, I liked that a lot.
(3)
Sheila C.
I first went to the Dog-N-Suds as a kid in the 60's, as a high school student in the 70's, as a Purdue student in the 80's. This place is a living monument to drive in dining. I currently live in Chicago and anytime I am in the Lafayette area, I have to stop in. Nowhere else can I get a frosty glass mug of root beer with a tenderloin sandwich, like the ones they serve. The service is good and their prices are great. What more could you ask for?
(5)
Brittany B.
One of the few car hop style places left. Amazing root beer, and I would highly suggest a rootbeer freeze! The food is good and also reasonably poriced. It is only open during the warmer months so you have to get your fix while it is open but I crave it all winter!
(5)
Kristen H.
The diet root beer was good enough here that I ended up not only getting a large with my meal, but getting a jumbo to go. So delicious--it was difficult to tell it was diet. I ordered the basic hot dog basket for my first go around here. The hot dog itself was pretty good. The only thing I didn't like about it was that one of the condiments was too sweet--the ketchup, maybe? I'm not big on sweet condiments. The crinkle-cut fries were pretty good, especially with salt and ketchup added. The coleslaw was the best part--not too sugary, not too tart. The food was brought out pretty quickly though the people working there seemed harried (but still polite). The prices were beyond reasonable--my husband and I went away stuffed and it was for just over $9. Next time (because there will be a next time!) I'm going to have to try either their kraut dog or their Coney dog...

A classic drive in with two things they're known for. Coney dogs and their homemade Root beer. Nothing beats it in the summer! Bonus they take credit and debit cards now instead of all cash. It's a bummer they close in the winter but it's always something to look forward to. Definitely a must to try at least once if you're in town.

Man, I owe you a review! I can't believe I haven't written one yet. I visited another root beer stand here in Cincinnati (where I now live), and my experience left me wanting YOU instead...so here I am, giving the review you deserve! I've spent my life eating at Dog 'n Suds...some of my earliest memories are of drinking root beer from a baby-sized frosted mug and eating a plain hot dog! (I wasn't into coney sauce back then!) I should give my parents an extra hug for being awesome and bringing us here a lot when we were little. :) As a Lafayette native, I am one of the many who eagerly await the seasonal opening of this local treasure! If it tells you anything, the police have to come direct traffic the first couple days they open because of the people who have been suffering all winter without their root beer and coney dogs! :) It's a bright day in Lafayette when Dog 'n Suds opens! First off, the ROOT BEER! This is, by far, the most creamy and delicious root beer ever. Get a large because it comes in a frosty mug! The frosty goodness sinks down into the root beer, and then every drink rewards you with a little bit of slushy root beer flavored icy yumminess. This is the way root beer should be! You can buy it by the gallon, and I'm pretty sure you can buy it at local supermarkets as well. I think I saw bottles of it at Walmart once. Just go get a root beer and enjoy every last drop! The food is delicious as well...you really can't go wrong. The Coney Dog is the classic dish here...the sauce is thin and has a sweet flavor to it. It's not a chili sauce. It's unique, and it's so yummy! You can even order frozen coney sauce to get you through the winter, if you need to. I like mine topped with cheese and onions as well. The burgers are really good too...the Boilermaker (a double cheeseburger with a special sauce) and the Texas Burger (again a double patty, but this one has coney sauce too!) are both awesome. You can get a simple Charco Cheese Coney Burger (just a plain cheeseburger with coney sauce)...one of my favorites. The fries aren't the best fries in the world, but they're okay. You're better off having breaded mushrooms or onion rings! My dad likes the tenderloin a lot. It's huge. This place is nostalgic, the food is delicious, the root beer fantastic, the prices are cheap, the service friendly...it all adds up to a unique experience that's lots of fun! You get the tray brought out to your car, which is always exciting when you're a kid, haha! I have so many great memories of coming here with my family. My dad gave us all a napkin to put on the bottom of our mug to absorb the melt from the frosty mug, and now my brother and I do the same thing as adults. I hope Dog 'n Suds is open for a very VERY long time. Every time I come home in the summer months, I have to stop in at least once each visit. There's just nothing like it anywhere else! :) OH, and it used to be cash only, but now they take cards! :)

Don't waste your time or money unless you just wants great cold root beer. The chicken flattened tenderloin sandwich was flavorless, dry, and not eatable. The fries weren't hot or salted. Hamburger patty so thin that the lettuce was thicker. Terrible flavor. Husband got coney dog with cheese and chili footlong and said it was good.very disappointed overall and can't recommend this place except for root beer and dog.

I dined here again on my way to Chicago last month. Wonderful-- again! In my original review I emphazed the unique and nostalgic quality of this restaurant, but I now I want to emphasize the food is WONDERFUL! It's like a menu from a 1950's teen hangout, like the sweet shop in Grease, Mel's in American Grafitti, or Pop's where Archie and Jughead hung out. The coney dogs are just delicious with a delctable sweet coney sauce that makes them one of the most distinct and memorable coney dogs I have ever eaten. The root beer is cold and creamy, and IMO, the best in the world. Food ingredients of high quality. Worth the couple of minutes detour off I65 if you are travelling near Lafayette. And if you live in Lafayette and haven't been here--shame on you! When the Dog-N-Suds in Indianapolis closed years ago, I couldn't believe how much I missed it.

My only beef with this place is that it closes in the winter. Why can't the car hops just put on a parka? Seriously, this place is great. It's been here for 50 years, it must be doing something right. Good coney dogs and great boilermakers. Can't get enough of their root beer either.
(4)

Great food, great service, and very good root beer! Dog-N-Suds is always great! Another great thing about Dog-N-Suds is that it's inexpensive!!!

I got the boilermaker with the basket of fries and coleslaw. The burger was alright , it was a little too plain but it wasn't bad at all. The fries were good too... They were hot and crispy as they should. Probably the best part was the coleslaw. Usually, I barely touch it but I finish the whole thing so that shows how good it's in my opinion. I will stop by and try some of their other stuff so hopefully I get something tastier next time... If you are around late at night I think it's an ok place to grab something quick.....
(3)
Dustin B.
This place has the world's best coney dogs and root beer. I swear... The owner of this place needs to branch out and open more locations on the West Coast. It would be a huge hit! I crave this place all the time... but am hardly ever here during the warmer months. The only downside I have to say about this place is that it's not open year round like disgusting Sonic. That should be a great advantage, but sadly it isn't for the owner of this business...
(5)
Eric C.
The Root Beer is the best, I had never tried the Polish Sausage until this summer, now it's my favorite. I like the Texas Burger, the breaded Tenderloin is ok, a few years ago there was a better one....the mushrooms are very good, but again they had some different ones a few years ago that were better. The coney sauce is to sweet sometimes and not very meaty.

5 stars based on the root beer and coney dogs alone. What an appropriate namesake.

Traditional, local, drive-thru with great service, good food, and a fun atmosphere. Doesn't pretend to be more than it is, but it does it all well. Definitely worth a stop!

Fantastic root beer and hot dogs at extremely low prices, what could be better? Service is friendly and fast, I've been here many times and have never had a bad experience.

Been going there since I can remember. Great coneys & root beer. I personally love the Texas Burger. Drive-in and eat or take out. Always good.

My only beef with this place is that it closes in the winter. Why can't the car hops just put on a parka? Seriously, this place is great. It's been here for 50 years, it must be doing something right. Good coney dogs and great boilermakers. Can't get enough of their root beer either.
