To describe my experience in one phrase, I would say "old school". I have limited knowledge of classic supper clubs, but this place matched the vision in my head. Plus, the place has a rich history which makes the experience that much better. I enjoyed the house special prime rib (the 22 oz was HUGE!) and the twice baked potato - which is a must-order. The seafood was great as well, and the table enjoyed several of the apps. I actually rather enjoyed the frog legs (tastes like chicken!) and of course the cheese curds. My only real criticism would be the service. It wasn't bad mind you, but it was far from 5-star. Overall, it was a great night out!

My family of four made the hour drive out to Heston Supper Club at the suggestion of a colleague. It was a gorgeous Friday evening. We were seated in the back room, which was full of natural light. Heston's serves a variety of small bites of bread, whipped butter, crackers, and cheese spread as soon as you're seated. The variety was pretty cool. My father and I ordered the 22oz "House Cut" of Prime Rib. Mom got smoked BBQ ribs and sis got Shrimp de Jonghe. We decided on a shrimp/crab cake for a starter. The shrimp/crab cake was presented nicely, with the waitress informing us that each is made-to-order. I'm not a huge fan of crab cakes, and this reminded me why. Heston's had a weird texture and the flavor was very flat. It really tasted of salt with no depth of flavor. Disappointed. Soup and salad was served before our entrées. I ordered clam bisque. It was full of hearty veggies and clams. Flavor and texture was on point. It might have benefitted from a bit of sherry but I was pleased. The rest of my family had salad that closely resembled something out of a sack from the grocery store. I would definitely recommend Heston's soup over their uninspired salads. At this point, I should mention that the service we received throughout our meal was top-notch. None of us had to ask for a refill or for dishes to be cleared. Heston's gets 1 full star for their impressive service. But for a place that pegs its reputation on prime rib and its entrées, I can't justify anything above three stars for this establishment. My mom's portion of ribs looked and smelled delicious even if they were a bit small for a full rack. My father, who ordered his House Cut cooked to medium rare, was uninspired by the flavor of the beef. I ordered my cut cooked to medium, and was pretty happy. Not too much fat- just enough to keep the huge slice of beef moist. It could have used more seasoning but I was generally happy with my cut of beef. All of us agreed that the baked potatoes were perfect but, seriously, how hard is it to mess up a baked potato? The largest disappointment at the table came from my sister, who ordered the Shrimp de Jonghe. It was supposed to be shrimp prepared with garlic and a crispy breadcrumb topping. What she got was rubbery, bland, and complete mush. I've made similar recipes at home and I have to say the execution of this recipe at Heston's was entirely unsatisfactory. She only managed to eat two shrimps. I've sent maybe two dishes back to the kitchen in years of dining out, but I would certainly have sent this one back. For an establishment of this caliber, I would expect them to pull off such a simple recipe with a lot more finesse. In sum, Heston's gets 1 star for remarkable service, 1 star for their soup and complimentary cheese and crackers, and 1 star for their prime rib. For $160 for four, we would have preferred driving an hour in the other direction to Chicago for a more refined dining experience.

I love this place. My family has been going here every easter for the past 15 years + The menu if fairly simple, meat and potatoes and it is always good. Friendly service, delicious food and a quaint little restaurant. I cannot wait to go again and eat some delicious Prime Rib

Great food and atmosphere is really quaint and cozy. My husband and I both got the house prime rib which was amazing. The wine selection wasn't really as I had hoped though. Overall a nice little local place with lots of charm.

I'm not too picky about service, and our server here was ok. It was very busy and she acted kind of rushed, but it was nothing deal breaking. Don't get me wrong, the service was fine, and the owner is very friendly and took the time to visit tables. The atmosphere also is great for what it is, and when you walk in, it really feels like a supper club. The drinks, not so great, but again, I wasn't too disappointed after two 'so-so' chocolate martinis. I would have expected some sort of 'dressing' like chocolate syrup, some sort of edible garnish, and a mint leaf on top. The food took a little longer than usual but it was nice to sit and chat. Anyway, my point is, the Prime Rib is the most amazing cut of beef you could ever find anywhere close to here. The modest cut is huge, you could eat it for a week, but I don't really eat that much beef. FIVE stars for the beef. You would have to hunt down a cow and kill it yourself if you wanted a fresher cut. I would have rated this place four stars given my comments about the server and drinks, but I can't get that Prime Rib out of my head.

If you're looking to eat a big piece of beef and have a strong cocktail, this is your spot. Simply put, it's an old school supper club. Best to grab a drink or two while you wait for a table. And you will wait. And wait. They're known for their prime rib, among other things, so it was prime rib for me. All I can say is that it was good, although too salty for my taste. In fact, almost everything that could be salted was hit was the heavily sodium hand. Good thing they kept my water glass full. I'd give it another chance, mostly for the supper club ambiance.

If there was only an option to rate zero stars... We (a party of 4) came to the Heston Supper Club last Saturday night, March 26th, 2011 at around 7:30pm CST. The restaurant was busy, and we were told by the host it would be 45 minutes to an hour before we could be seated -- we decided to wait and took a seat. Over the course of the next 2 hours -- YES 2 HOURS, people came and went, and yet our name was not called to be seated. To add insult to the already ridiculously long wait (about an hour and 15 minutes in at this point), a man and his family who were clearly friends with the host, were seated before us, even though they had arrived at least 30 minutes after we had arrived. When we approached the host and inquired about this, he said that they had arrived before us -- what a lie. So, if you're looking for a restaurant with a main course of terrible service and a complimentary side of lies and nepotism -- the Heston Supper Club is for you!

Overpriced mediocre food with decent service and mediocre atmosphere. Fillet was cooked too much for rare and was largely dry and flavorless. Shrimp was overpoweringly fishy. Orders were delivered incorrectly (1 wrong potato, 3 incorrectly cooked fillets, 1 appetizer delivered as a substitute side with upcharge). Gratuity policy is 20% on parties of 8 or more and I feel that given the prices of the place (not inexpensive) that percent is bold. 20% is for exceptional service which we did not receive. Better cut of meat from Costco filet and I prepare it much better (consensus at our table). Dinner was $263 for 8 people and was definitely not worth it.

I've been here many times for special occasions as a kid. Now that I live away from La Porte County, it's a treat to get to go there when I get a chance. Obviously, the prime rib is the star here. It's the best place within fifty miles to get a slab of wonderfulness, and they do it right. Although on my last visit, I didn't order it, those at the table were served a cut that was cooked perfectly and was highly complimented. Mostly what I come here for is the northern delicacy that is lake perch, and Heston doesn't disappoint. Eight large filets, a hefty portion, sauteed perfectly with a dusting of flour. They weren't at all greasy or tough, and satisfied my love for the fish that can't be found south of US 30. On the day we visited, the special salad was a homegrown heirloom tomato with red onion, bacon, and Maytag blue cheese. I'd have liked a little more of the Maytag, and the bacon a little crispier, but the tomatoes were delicious and the balsamic vinaigrette was the perfect accompaniment. I also would have liked the salad to be offered as your dinner salad, even with an upcharge, rather than solely a la carte. But it was delicious nonetheless. One miss was the beef vegetable soup, which was a little bland, although loaded with beef. The broccoli and cauliflower vegetable side was boring and a bit overcooked, which isn't unusual in restaurants where the focus is elsewhere. The horseradish mashed red potatoes, however, were outstanding, and the portion size was ridonkulous. Granted it was quiet when we were there, but our service was excellent, both friendly and efficient. Drink glasses were filled and plates were cleared quickly, but we were never rushed. Some of the complainers on here are a bit OTT or petty, I should add. 20% gratuity on a group of 8 or more is very common, especially in a restaurant like this. Usually it's 6 or more, and 20% is a good tip, not an exceptional tip. Bottom line is that Heston is probably one of the best restaurants in LP County, and deservedly so.

I was kind of bummed to see their billboard on I-94 a couple of years ago. But it is good to know that it is still a small, quaint, old-school supper club. Yes it is old-fashioned. There is nothing trendy here. The owner greeted us with a warm and enthusiastic hello. Waitstaff was spot on. Our server was attentive, friendly, happy to be there. She opened a bottle of wine with ease, served us efficiently and treated us well. The food is exactly what I expected. Nothing terribly creative, nothing that you would find in a gourmet restaurant. Just good old-fashioned steaks, prime rib and fish. Prices are on the higher end, but the cuts of steak are better quality. Get there early or you will wait, and wait and wait. Don't say you weren't warned about the wait. Go enjoy some really good steaks and prime rib.

Busy Saturday night visit and we had a great experience. From the hostess, server and busboys; everyone was attentive and pleasant. The crackers and house cheddar cheese spread was awesome. Stuffed mushrooms- great. Calamari- ok. Black & Blue ribeye- excellent. Filet- ok. Peach shortcake- excellent! We'll be back :)

  • Tim B.

The cheddar spread is tasty. That's where the good comments stop. The service was pretty bad. My food was served room temperature at best. On top if it being cold, none of it even tasted good. I wouldn't go back if it was free. We drove to Dairy Queen on the way home from Heston's to fill up on good food.

  • Melissa B.

The best thing about my meal was the cheese spread(which you can buy at Al's Supermarket in LaPorte). I ordered the Chicken Kiev, which thought would be homemade, right? WRONG! It was the same Kiev I've gotten from the Schwan's trucks. Complete rip-off.

  • Gail W.

Host was pompous, but server was personable and efficient. Drinks had bad flavor due to well water ice cubes. King crab was delicious, steak fries were mealy and tasteless. Do not order the vegetarian platter! It was cold rice, soggy zucchini, and the tiny portabella mushrooms weren't de-gilled for a ridiculous $14.50. We won't be back.

My family went to Southern Michigan on a week's long vacation and my husband and I had a date night during one of our evenings there. Based on the recommendation of our rental home owners, we went to Heston's Supper Club for dinner. We loved it. It's out in the middle of nowhere and is nothing elaborate from the outside, but the food was wonderful. They serve cheese spread with a basket of crackers and bread before your meal which was delicious. We had the cheese curds with a chipotle ranch dip - fabulous. I had the breaded jumbo shrimp with the twice baked potato. It was a ton of shrimp - way more than I could have ever eaten. My husband had the prime rib special. All of it was very, very good. It was just a great little local place and if we vacation there again, we will definitely make a point of returning to Heston's.

We visited the supper club tonight and were very disappointed. I was really looking forward to good lobster tails and was unhappy with the seasoning. The french fries were soggy and my salad was not great. My first diet coke tasted fine, but the subsequent two tasted very metallic. Possibly from well water. It was difficult to get the waitresses attention and the host was rude. Very disappointed : (

I'm from Chicago and have eaten here many times. We love it. An old time supper club with great steaks. Lobster is v good too. Well priced. Service has always been good for us; the bartenders are v friendly.

They have one of the best prime ribs around. The menu has a good variety to choose from but I go for the prime. For the price it is a good deal. Anywhere from 14oz to 40oz. 14oz is big enough I can't imagine trying to chow down 40oz. what the! When you get the right bartender they make a wicked jack sour. Others had the lamb chops, ribs and the chicken kiev (happy meal). Overall it is a nice place, however on this visit service was not very good. It was not busy and the other servers were attentive to their customers. I would be willing to go back because I like the prime and drinks.

We heard that this place can get pretty crowded, but when we went (a holiday weekend) we had no wait and service was excellent. The "Lake & Land" (perch & prime rib) was our favorite. The prime rib was great, my wife loved the twice-baked potato crock, and the atmosphere was fine. Don't know what people are talking about here about cold food or bad service; our food came out on hot plates at the right temperature, and three rib orders at different temps all came out correctly. We'd definitely come here again!

This is one of those restaurants that when we go we cannot figure out why we don't go more often. I cannot speak highly enough about this hidden little gem. Tonight I was walking back in (I left my wallet in the car) and was walking in behind a customer coming in. He remarked that it was he and his wife's first time. I told him don't even bother reading the menu just order the Prime Rib. I eat out... a lot!!!! This is the best prime rib I have ever had. Walking in from the parking lot you have your senses assaulted with the smell of roasted and smoked meat. By the time you get to the front door you're drooling and hoping that the wait isn't going to be long. Tonight it wasn't, about 5 mins to get seated. Before I had my seat pulled in they set down the first of many delights to hit the table. Their house made cheese spread and a basket of breads and crackers. They really should charge for this. Dinner well its just about the greatest thing you ever put in your non vegetarian mouth. But the shocker and surprise of the night was dessert. Peach shortcake. Local peaches and by local I mean they were grown a par 5 from the restaurant. The shortcake was more like a light lemony pound cake and served with ice cream and whipped cream. To say the peaches were perfect would not do it justice. Georgia has got nothing on Indiana peaches.

We took my mom to Hestons for her 70th Birthday party, total 17 of us. Food was awesome as usual, my parents took me to Hestons a couple times a year since I was a little boy and it has always been great. Prime rib is the best around. Service was good, waitress messed a couple of the checks but she apologetic and sorted things out.

Although I was bummed I didn't get a chance to meet Charleston Heston we still had a good time. Seriously it was a fun dinner. This is one of those restaurants that doesn't change as time passes which is refreshing. The menu is seriously old school, drinks were good. Food was just OK.

Rude staff! My husband asked for a vodka & Red Bull. The bartender Jim stated they did not have Red Bull as this was "an adult bar, not a child's bar." Simply say you do not carry the product. Do not insult your clientele. This is certainly not how a professional bartender acts in an "adult bar."

    (1)
  • Steve D.

Rude S L O W "service". Old, smelly, very unwelcoming atmosphere. Food quality has been lost but prices amongst the highest in the area. Has potential if you get there on an "ON" night...when food is fresh, cooked well/when ordered and staff not lost in space. Other times just a miserable experience. Our last visit will be our last until a new owner/manager/chef can retake the helm and produce service and food quality.

Wow, what an amazing place this is! We went on a Saturday night, and had to wait 20 to 30 minutes receding. We went to the bar and ordered for drinks, and was very surprised when it was only $20.we were seated promptly, and treated cheese and crackers. Yummy! They have a special of an 8 oz prime rib plus another entree for $25-50 . The food was amazing, great portions and superior service! Not a cheap night, but so worth it!

  • Matt G.

Wow. This place is amazing. Saying the prime rib is good is being rude. It is probably the best prime rib I have ever had. The cuts are more than generous, with the potato servings ranging in insane. No need to go into any big city to an overpriced steakhouse. What you get here will want you coming back for more. Wait service and management were very pleasant, bus boys filling your water glasses before they are dry. Only negative thing I could say, and it is so small and barely noticeable.... When ever the a/c kicks on all the lights flicker. What ever you do... stop here for a meal and order the prime rib. Anything over medium rare would be a disgrace.

Absolutely delicious dinner of prime rib this evening. Our service was excellent. The waitress was prompt and friendly. She gave us just the right amount of time to order our drinks and meal. There are lots of selections on the menu to please anyone's palate. We appreciated being seated in a room where there were no children. The cheddar cheese spread is very tasty that can be enjoyed on crackers or bread. Our food was hot and presentation was nice. Pretty setting out in the country. Well worth the drive. We will be back!

As usual a delightful dining experience. I had the black and blue 16 oz. ribeye with horse radish mashed potatoes. I couldn't finish my dinner as I gorged myself on the bread sticks and flat bread with the pub cheese. The manhattans were also superb.

Stopped in for dinner on our way home. The customer service was top shelf. Food was top shelf, atmosphere was perfect. Well worth the short drive off I-94. I will be back!!! I had the French Onion Soup, and Prime Rib. My daughter had the ribs and they did not disappoint. The servings were very generous. Desert was ice cream on a cookie. I couldn't eat the desert as I was too full of this great dinner!

My expectations were high. I was looking forward to a great dinner & I'm not sure why it didn't happen here. We arrived just as they opened on Saturday. It was already packed. We got extremely slow service & when we got our meal I mentioned to my husband that my mashed potatoes were "almost warm", he said "just like my prime rib". Our dinner bill for 2 was about $75. (No alcohol). The minimum expectation would be getting served while our food was still hot. We won't b going back.

Traditional Supper Club - delicious food with very good service! The prime rib had great flavor and cooked to perfection. Nice cracker/bread assortment with a large portion of cheese. The bread pudding is to die for!

  • Jason L.

Prime rib is awesome. (If you order it well done, I hope someone slaps you, but that's my own opinion, they will give you an end cut if you ask.) Well made cocktails, craft beer available, in addition to the domestic standbys, nice wine list. Dark wood, low lighting, typical old fashioned supper club/steakhouse atmosphere. The seafood is pretty good as well. I would recommend that if you order beef (OTHER THAN THE PRIME RIB) that you shift your usual done-ness toward the rarer, I think you'll find it will turn out closer to your expectations, shame to ruin a good steak cut that's been ideally seasoned. Off the beaten track (Not actually in "Nowhere", but close), but worth it if you love a good cut of prime rib. No reservations. It's casual, but it's a "nice" place, so it wouldn't kill you to dress up just a little, c'mon, you never go to nice places.

Buffalo shrimp spicy sauce without drowning the shrimp. Prime rib prepared to perfection, the grill strip was tender juicy...excellent. Heston does not disappoint! One of out favorite places for steaks and seafood.

  • Mark S.

Yes it is an expensive meal, but this was for my 50th birthday and how many times do you get a chance to celebrate that with your family? I had the "hoof and claw" which is prime rib and crab legs. The prime rib was mouth watering and prepared expertly at medium rare, nice and red but still cooked enough. I live an hour away and even with the long drive this is still my favorite restaurant.

  • Amy C.

We arrived toward the end of the evening and enjoyed a perfectly made cocktail with the friendly bartender. We slowly savored our meal of prime rib and potatoes next the fireplace. Deep in conversation and enjoyment of our meal, we hardly noticed we were the last customers of the evening. The staff was very patient and personable and allowed us plenty of time to enjoy another great evening at Heston. I recommend you go to Heston and just relax and enjoy the friendly staff and perfectly prepared food....no worries, no hurry.

This is a little gem out in the middle of nowhere. The drive from US-2 is quite enjoyable. If you're driving in the fall at night...watch out for deer! I had the Lake Perch and Walleye and it was excellent. I normally have the chicken, but really there's nothing on the menu that isn't good. The service here is top notch too. Be prepared to spend a little, but trust me - it's worth it.

The Heston Supper Club is "Old School" to the "T" and you have to like that! However this is a classic example where your expectation level exceeds the experience. This place has been on my radar for sometime and I possibly set the anticipation level in my mind a bit too high. The bar area is classic and in true supper club form we ordered 2 respectable Old Fashion's. I had another for the journey to our table. Notable for their Prime Rib, I couldn't resist. It was good but somehow lacked "that taste", a subtle mineral flavor one expects from this cut. My GF had the Walleye. Again it was OK, but... The service in the bar and dining area was very good and exactly what you would hope for in an establishment like this. I think most of us from time to time have a similar experience where it would be damn near impossible for an establishment to live up to the hype you set forth.

This is going to be a tough review for me. Don't get me wrong the food was good and even better was the service, the people were super friendly and very accommodating, especially since I had made a reservation for ten people and didn't take in account the time difference. But I really just thought it was very over priced. The food was good, but not unbelievable and it should have been unbelievable with the prices that you pay. Was it worth the 3 hour drive? Probably not. But I am glad that I can mark it off my list and say that I had Heston Supper Club prime rib.

I have been going to Heston ever since I was single digits in my age and my parents felt I was old enough to go. I have been a fan ever since! Then, it was the kiddie cocktails, petite prime rib, french fries, and chocolate mousse. Now, not too much is different... Bottle of red, still the petite prime rib (honestly, 8oz is MORE than enough), steamed veggies or occasionally the horseradish mashed potatoes, and still ending with the chocolate mousse. However, now I've learned how to share dessert :-) The cheese and crackers are amazing and a delight every time they are placed before me right as I sit down. Mouth watering just thinking about them again! The prime rib is still my favorite here. I've tried it several different places and it has always fallen short. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive and the young bussers/helpers never let my water get too low or plates hang out on the table.

  • Steven M.

I have been here so many times I lost count. I keep bringing more and more people with me. This last time I thought I would have to rent a van as we had 8 people at the table. The service was right on the money, even with a table of twenty right in back of us. The home made cheddar cheese kept us quiet until our food arrived. I don't know what to say, other than this is the best prime rib and one of the top two restaurants in Indiana that I know of. It came out hot, thick and juicy. I had enough to keep me busy until I hit metal on the plate. Delicious! Everyone was completely happy and most of them took home a doggy bag. Yum!

  • M. Chris D.

I've had the opportunity to eat here several times and I've always enjoyed the meal. Their portions are HUGE and the variety gives something for everyone. Prime rib is a must! But I also recommend the surf n turf.. The lobster tail every time has been cooked to perfection and with so much flavor. The bar is quant with old town wood covered charm and most of the folks dining seem happy and relaxed. Only down side is the decor.. VERY dated dining room, 80's decor and bathrooms, but don't let that stop you from a great cooked steak!
