An absolutely wonderful German restaurant with a most delicious menu selection. The desserts are huge. Try them all!

Who Knew, good German food in southern Indiana. The meal was outstanding. Love this place. Great little German place.

Every time I come through Jasper I make it a point to visit the Schnitz. Great bratwurst (in fact, it was the winner of the Super 46 sandwich competition for the Super Bowl) and terrific salad bar. Don't miss my favorite, the pickled herring! The draft beer selection is great. Traditional Bavarian brews. Before leaving, make sure you check out the little store in the front. Lots of cute/kitschy German items/food.
(4)Matthew P.
Good beer and food in a sea of fast food. The Schnitz is one of the only places in Jasper to get good beer and food. Liters of Spaten Optimator, fried chicken livers, and prime rib (Saturday nights only) makes for a happy German. Also, a full salad bar complete with soup and pickled herring is included. The atmosphere is adorned with silly little German sayings, expensive cuckoo clocks, and a little souvenir shop. A good reason to make you feel like visiting Jasper is a good idea.

Looking for great service, fair pricing and excellent German and American Fare, look no further. This restaurant has earned its reputation for all three! When in Jasper, IN there is no other place to eat. By the way the beer List is excellent too se

I want to give this place 4 stars, but it would be out of nostalgia rather than deserved. The Schnitz, as it is affectionately called by us locals, is really coasting on reputation at this point, I think. Still, I love coming here. The food is good. Authentic? Hell no. Don't let anyone hear you say that, though. The Wurst Platter is pretty authentic, but it's hard to get that wrong. German fries are DIVINE, but there's nothing "German" about them. They are, for those who aren't from here, potatoes that have been boiled, sliced, and fried in a pan with onions (and bacon grease if you're at home). Pretty much everything meat is sourced from Merkley's, the local butcher (5-stars for Merkley's!!!!). The salad bar is quite extensive and worth the extra cost if you're hungry. The bread is local as well, though it's no longer Jasper City Bakery since they closed. The bar is where it's at here. They have several beers on tap, and many, many more available in bottles. This includes German and Czech varieties imported from Europe. The last time I was here, I ordered "Das Boot", which is a giant 64-oz glass in the shape of a boot filled with beer (I ordered the Heffeweizen). Wow that was a lot of beer. They take a credit card from you to hold, because if you break the glass, it's $70. OK Fair enough...the drink was only about $20, which is pretty amazing. On Christmas Eve, they serve free hors d'oeuvres in the bar area. Staff is always friendly and prompt, even when it gets a little crazy busy. They have a gift shop with some items imported from Germany, but most are made in Asia. Everything is over priced, but cute. DO NOT ORDER the "Strudel". What comes out of that kitchen will not look anything like a strudel. It is coconut infested walnut cobbler and has nothing to do with strudel except there are apples in it.

if you don't expect anything but great German food, beer and an authentic atmosphere . . . you will love this place. if you want a steak, a burger, or chicken and fries go to a diner, don't come here looking for that and then cry on yelp. it's a German restaurant . . . that's what they do best . . . and that's what you should order: German food and beer. the wait staff is friendly and very accommodating. prices are good: $8 for a liter of ON TAP German lager! i loved the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, and i love the Schnitzelbank in Jasper.
(5)Jonny S.
This is a Jasper institution, but I think they're coasting a bit on reputation. If you're in town and just want a drink this is hands-down the place to go. Lots of beers on tap, including German and Czech varieties! I used to live in the Czech Republic so I really appreciate that, though it also means that I can be a bit picky about "German" food. The menu can be hit or miss. I do love the Wurst platter, I understand they get their wurst from a local butcher and the accompanying sauerkraut and hot mustard is divine. Their other German choices are so so. Not quite worth the price tag I think. The prime rib is definitely not "prime." The fried chicken is good too (though as I put on another area restaurant review, this is Southern Indiana and if you can't make good fried chicken here get out of the restaurant business). I do enjoy the salad bar. The variety is fairly extensive and you get some local specialties like pickled herring and Jasper Bakery bread. Don't order the Apple Strudel if you like authentic German strudel though. It's more like a walnut coconut apple cobbler thingy. The staff is very friendly, decked out in their German outfits and the décor is both German and Southern Indiana at the same time which I appreciate. If you frequent Jasper you should go at least once. 3 1/2 stars.
(3)Brian K.
Just a great restaurant. Great salad bar with different breads, soup, salad and real butter...I always get the fired chicken ($11ish) and its great. The pretzel sandwiche thing with sausages that they won an award for was not good though...Everything else about it is great!!!!
(4)Carrie B.
Definitely a great place to try if you are in Jasper! In my knowledge, this is the premier German restaurant in a town that really prides itself on its German heritage. I love the spaetzle here and can't resist the soup and salad bar, which is frequently a meal in itself for me! It is billed by the restaurant as the best soup and salad bar in the Midwest, and I think I'd have to agree. There is quite a variety of menu items available, and they have good specials. There is also a shop in the lobby filled with German items to purchase, if you are interested.
(4)Jessica H.
I think this is a really fun restaurant. They have a great drink menu and the food was pretty decent too. It's all German food with a couple of odd items thrown in. We were taken here for a company event and I was super excited they had latkes! If ever in Jasper again, I will return.
(3)Kearby K.
This place has the best Fried Chicken Ever. They also have the most homemade salads on the salad bar you can imagine and a great beer selection for Southern Indiana. I really have nothing bad to say in total about the place outside of echoing that the liquor bottles on the wall were a bad addition. If i could give one extra star to one restaurant in all of my yelp it would be here. This place is very inexpensive and the selection is amazing and wait i have not even started talking about the German Food. Check my Yelp account- i like German food and this place is right up there with the best but I still say order Fried Chicken and Salad Bar and for a side who cares- go back to the Salad Bar and Drink Beer.
(5)Ted S.
Great fun. Stick with the specialties and you'll be happy.
(4)Amanda H.
So the food is good, but it us way to loud here and this place is very overrated and overpriced. Service is good and very nice. But the loudness and pricey meals overbear the good food here. The best time to be here is lunch and before, just forget about dinner.
(2)Leigh N.
Went in on a recommendation for the salad bar but it was mediocre as far as variety (unless you're looking for cold salads and jello). Soup (minestrone) was good and filling. Service was pleasant. Best draw is proximity to Hampton Inn next door.
(3)Dally W.
Quick Friendly service. Good beers. Nice salad bar. Good food

Today was our yearly visit to the Schnitzelbank for some of the best German food in Indiana and this place is a tradition. From southern Indiana its a one hour drive to Jasper but well worth the trip. To open with Kraut Balls are a MUST appetizer, this is ground beef, pork, sauerkraut & seasoning mixed with cream cheese then rolled in bread crumbs. The Half Livers & Half Gizzards are also spot on. For those that wish to eat on the healthier side then of course salads are offered. Schnitzelbank has so many great offerings, my wife loves the lunch buffet and sampled the 3-bean salad, cornbread salad, sauerkraut salad, German potato salad. The biggest winners were the Reuben soup which even captures the taste of wheat bread in a soup. Also, for the best & freshest summer salad in our state then this is the place to go. I went with today's lunch special which was two pieces of fall off the bone fried chicken with sweet corn and milk gravy mashed potatoes. To quote a friend of mine "good eats" Our waitress couldn't have been nicer and made certain we were taken care of. This is a casual restaurant and they also have a nice beer selection. And at the end of our lunch my wife said we should really comeback more often.

I normally go outta my way to avoid German food, especially in places like Jasper, IN. But this place came recommended from a colleague back in Chicago and with a bit of personal research, it was determined that this place had an award winning dish called the Bratzel. Yeah, I still will go elsewhere for food even when presented with a convenient German option, but I'll admit, the Bratzel at this joint was ridic. I had a schooner of beer and finished with the strudel accompanied by cinnamon ice cream. All in all, it was worth dropping my previous bias for one night. I would go back for sure.
(4)Jeff M.
Great German place. Excellent food and service is top notch. I have never gotten the salad bar before, but will always get it in the future. There is all kinds of great side dishes available. And the home made soup is wonderful. I walked out very full. Cannot say enough about the food. It is wonderful, and it comes quick and hot. Server kept my drink full and did not keep me waiting on my bill.
(5)Waleed S.
Service and food were good. The restaurant does a great job of providing an authentic traditional German feel. Only thing I would say is it's a bit pricey. But if money isn't a thing, and you love German food, go for it.
(3)Susan A.
Just plain good. The salad bar has old fashioned favorites, with a good selection of vegetables. Their turnip kraut is memorable, as is their goulash. My husband always has their roast beef Great dark bread, which is sometimes hard to come by. I just this restaurant were closer. Great place, and nice, helpful servers.

Having spent more than my fair share of time in southern Indiana, it was inevitable that I would get around to reviewing The Schnitzelbank, heretofore referred to as "The Schnitz" going forward. With an establishment as revered as this one, and with literal decades of business to its name, a lot of folks might assume this business would be content to coast on its reputation. That would could not be further from the truth as, after all these years, The Schnitz continues to be a vital destination for anyone looking for German cuisine, hospitable staff and a beer selection that makes some of the pubs we have in Texas look small by comparison. The Schnitz walks a fine line between "tourist trap" and "local watering hole." Sure, they have a goofy cardboard cutout in front for photo opportunities whenever you have had one too many beers, and yeah, the gift shop off the entrance is kitschy beyond belief (it's a toss-up between the felt Tyrolean hat and the chicken hat with dangling legs for what may be the guiltiest pleasure of headwear one can purchase) but do not let those first impressions deter you. Once inside the bar or dining room, the touristy stuff is pushed aside in favor of favorable service and an expansive food and drink menu. Friday night, my Dad and I stopped in for a beer. Or multiple beers, really. The dining room closes at 10:00 p.m., but the bar kind of operates on a "we close whenever the last person leaves" type of schedule. Sure, if some nights are slower than others, they'll close early, but we saw a wide variety of signs of life when we walked in. We sat down and Jackie, the bar manager, was over in seconds to wait on us. And there are not enough positive words for Jackie: she was like that family member you forgot you had but immediately wished you kept in touch with. She was quick with the wit and even quicker with the service - I asked if they had any Belgian ales and she rattled off a few I had no idea existed! And when one foamed up too quick for what would pass for normal human consumption, she was back with a replacement brew in seconds flat. The cast of regulars here all know the staff, and Jackie knows all of them. If you're stopping in for a drink at night, I cannot recommend this place enough, if only for the service and hospitality of Jackie and her team. Also, the 107 or 170 beers on offer help - I do not remember how many exactly they have but I know it's 100-something and there was a 7 in the total at one point. If they could get Maredsous 8 or Trois Pistoles on the menu, they would be unstoppable. The fact that they willfully have Xingu, when bars in Texas even have a hard time getting that one, is pretty doggone amazing. Then came Saturday night after we broke free from our mini family reunion/Kentucky Derby party/exercise in insanity. We stopped by here for dinner and opted to sit in the bar (at a table this time). The place was hopping and we seemed to have a tag team of waitresses helping us out. I want to say one was Judy, and the other was Wonder Woman Part Two. These two gals helped each other out and ensured none of the dozens of patrons in the bar were going without their food or drink for long. And they did it with smiles and senses of humor! Two more points for the staff, and even more points for the beer menu broken down by country. Hello, beer from Slovakia. Unfortunately, those points did not translate entirely to the food. While the menu is unintentionally hilarious (my favorite item descriptions being "Its Grandma again" for the "Half Livers & Half Gizzards," and "Made in our kitchen from a machine imported from Germany" for "Spatzle"), the food can be hit or miss. Escargot-stuff mushrooms take two wonderful items and mash them up in a largely forgettable appetizer, while lemon pie on the opposite end of the spectrum is tart without the taste. Fortunately, the well-regarded salad bar is completely worthy of the hype it receives, their fried chicken is mouth-wateringly succulent and that Schnitzelburger was so good, I almost took off a few of my fingers on accident while shoveling it into my mouth. Add in the lyrics done in rebus form of the titular song painted on the wall, and a trio of TV sets tuned to sporting events, not to mention the regular locals and out-of-towners crowding into the bar, and this is definitely a hot spot for nighttime dining and drinking in town. The Schnitz has stood the test of time through a blending of genuinely wonderful service, German authenticity, a menu that is not afraid to take chances, food for customers also not afraid to take chances, and a touristy angle that serves the southern Indiana corridor well. It's definitely worth experiencing at least once but do not be surprised if you find yourself back on more than a couple occasions.

Ian makes the best Moscow Mules is Dubois County!! Great salad bar and Wurst platter. Great service and hospitality for the last 25 years!
(5)Eric J.
Great family owned authentic owned restaurant who's beer selection is unmatched. The goulash and german fries is my go to followed by a 34 oz german beer! The bar area is a good place to chill after a long day to watch the game.
(5)John R.
It's been more than 35 years since we have been here. And, it's just as good as we remember it being!
(5)Jeff A.
4 employees standing there when we walked in and not one said hi or offered to help until I asked. Really good food especially the German potato salad but the spatzels were yucky noodles. The prices are high! We drove a long way to try this restaurant. Such a let down for them to ignore us but the restaurant atmosphere, waitress and food made the trip worth while.
(3)Cheryl M.
Sorry Schnitz. Overrated. The buzz is the tourist feel of the place but the food is below average and the service has been unfriendly each time I visited.
(1)Corrine P.
I love this place. Getting into my German heritage here. One of my bosses is from Jasper and he recommended this place and I often schedule meetings for him there. This is a must if you go to Jasper, Indiana. The kraut balls rock! Great beer selection. They even have a neat gift shop. Greatly decorated place with friendly staff.

We drove for 1 1/2 hours just to eat here because of the reviews. We were very disappointed with the service and food. Since they were not busy, we were seated right away. We were seated in a narrow room with seven tables. Only two of the tables were occupied. One table was waiting for their food and the other was about finished. We waited patiently for the waitress to appear. She made eye contact and walked right pass us without a comment. About five to seven minutes later, two more parties arrived and were seated in the same section. Within a few minutes, both tables were waited on by the same waitress we saw earlier. My husband and I figured this must not be our waitress since we had been there some time before the other two tables had arrived. The same waitress came back awhile longer and said, "Can I help you?" We placed our order with no substitutions or special requests. It was some time before our salad arrived. Shortly afterwards the fried chicken arrived, but I had only one piece of chicken and had ordered two pieces. The waitress told me that they owed me a piece of chicken and they were frying it right now. She made no apology for the mistake. We were just about finished with our meal and here came the chicken. I was still hungry so I decided to eat the wing they just brought. The wing was raw inside. The meat was still pink and rubbery. When I finally got the attention of our waitress, she said that she knew it was undercooked because the "wing fryer" tried to hurry it. I told her to just take it back and take it off our bill. Again she offered no apology or even a friendly gesture. We sat there a long time waiting for our bill. My husband had his card on the table ready to pay and attempted to get her attention numerous times. After some time, the older lady who seated us, saw how we had been waiting a long time for our waitress and went up to our waitress and pointed us out. We were never so glad to get out of a place. Don't go there!!
(1)Richard B.
Good authentic German style food. Loved the German Potatoes and the Pickled Herring. Large choice of desserts and great salad bar. The Sauerbraten, Knackwurst and Wiener Schnitzel was really good and the Sauerkraut was also great. A bit pricey on the final bill but still well worth it considering the choices available.
(4)Carmine M.
I'm again traveling on business and sometimes I wind up in a small town, that being said I took a shot at t his place, I was into something different and man was I happy, Awesome food, and the prices not that bad, I hope to be back here one day.
(5)Jennifer G.
Always leave full and content! Like a visit to Grandmas house! I crave the food after I leave and make a point to visit when in town....or just passing through. I called in a to go order, not forgetting 'Kraut Balls', and drove another hour to my final destination before I could enjoy today...still amazing! Brats-Kraut Balls-Chef Salad-German Potatoes-cin butter...yum.
(4)Bryan W.
excellent local place. great staff who made me feel welcome and great locals who offered up many suggestions. will be back next time im in the area
(4)Lauren H.
I found this restaurant while passing through Jasper and I unfortunately only went here for drinks with the intention to return the next day for lunch, but they were closed for a private party when I came back! The atmosphere was really cool, the waitstaff wears authentic gear and the menu looked amazing. Prices were reasonable and the beer selection was great. There seemed to be about a 20-30 minute wait for dinner on a Saturday night around 5pm, so not bad. They had a cute little gift shop that had authentic German goodies (Christmas stuff at the time of my visit). I am thinking about taking the trip to Jasper specifically to come here to eat!
(4)Jen C.
First time in Jasper and apparently this is where everyone goes? It's a really cute German themed restaurant with waitresses in costumes. I would enjoy it more if I didn't have to see bare legs of 40-50 year old ladies. Also the water tastes funny, maybe you should stick with beer.
(3)Charles M.
Very nice beer selection. We split the 2 person sampler - we really liked them all save for the goulash and sauerbraten. Not bad just not tastes we liked. Kraut balls were good and the spinach gratin was amazing!
(4)George H.
Some of the best German food I have ever had, we can't make a trip to Holiday World without going here for at least one meal. We've been coming here for nine years and have yet to be disappointed. Their salad bar is great and we love love their pickled turnips and all of their soups. We order all their German favorites and can barely finish the large servings and their beer selections are marvelous, too!
(5)Stephanie R.
I think we had the misfortune of arriving late on a Friday night when there was a large party in attendance. We got walked through a server station and seated in a back room and soon were the only diners there, save for a half dozen employees who filtered in and out to take their dinner break. That being said, the food was good (we had a sausage and some smoked chops) and our waitress was super cheerful. They did not have Gaffel on draft as the menu said, but they did have a good beer and wine selection.
(3)Jen F.
Seriously, it's overrated. The fried chicken, fried chicken livers are great - don't get me wrong. Call in and get them to go. The biggest amount of their menu is just "okay" and over priced. Go in for the plate lunch. It's for sure the tastiest value in Jasper. The wait staff are nice enough, but they are lifers and have gone beyond caring about their patrons. For example, they are not willing to make accommodations at all. I'm sure they are capable of making requested changes, but they just don't care. Service always takes forever. ETA: Forget about getting the breaded tenderloin. After 30+ years they changed their delicious sandwich to be a processed pork patty. Seriously, it's disgusting. One star, dudes.
(1)Meredith G.
Located a stone throw from the Hampton Inn (which they also own) it's a good place for a late bite or a drink. I did enjoy my Reuben sandwich and the staff was friendly. Oh, we did end the meal with a slice of strawberry pie and it was delish!
(3)John J.
Totally worth it, GO! I've been here many times over the years, it never gets old and it's the only place in town. Wurst platter does not disappoint, salmon is good too.
(4)M M.
Believe it or not, southwestern Indiana has a pretty heavy German influence. So when visiting my best friend in her parents' hometown, I was informed I had to indulge in the meaty chaos that is German food. Full disclosure, aside from a grilled brat in the backyard, I've never actually eaten German food. I was afraid. So many things with wurst in their names can't be good, can they? In the end, I chickened out, and got, wait for it, a bratwurst. But not just any kind of brat, this one was actually served on top of a nice soft pretzel with a side of a sort of home fries-esque concoction called German Fries. Everything was very tasty. The brats, were definitely the best I've had, and the pretzel was definitely a thousand times better than the crap we used to serve at the not-Auntie Anne's pretzel stand I worked at in high school (ah repressed memories... go back to being repressed). Overall, I was impressed. The service definitely had the small town kind of familiarity to it, which was fine, and works well with my best friend's parents' very gregarious personalities. The food did take a really long time to come out, but I'm not sure if that's just because German food takes a long time to cool. While (no offense to my very gracious hosts) I kind of hope to not have to return to Jasper in the near future, if I ever do, there will definitely be a return trip to Schnitzelbank in order.
(4)Caileigh A.
Our entrees were great, and fairly German. It's hard to get German pretzels spot on, but these weren't too bad. The bratwurst was very flavorful, and I can see how it's won so many awards. The salad bar was nothing special and it was a little overpriced for the selection, or lack thereof. Our server wasn't very considerate of food requests or allergies. We asked for no sauerkraut with our brat and no butter on our vegetables. She wasn't very willing to make these accommodations, so we had to find something else on the menu. I felt this was a little ridiculous. The ambiance of the place is absolutely great! We loved the gift shop in the front while we were waiting for seating. With limited restaurants in the area, this one was pretty pack. Though, parking was do-able. I'd recommend the potato pancakes and a slice of the german chocolate pie following your meal. Those were the best parts of dinner.
(3)Isadore F.
Every few years we stop to enjoy German food that is really good with a dark doublebock of choice. It is getting harder to finish the meal because its always filling and pleantiful. We learned that the very special cabbage soup is only available on some Saturdays, we were lucky to have found it and remember it fondly from years ago. Happy to report our repeat experience was as good as ever. Always a treat.
(4)Tiffany H.
My family enjoyed our meals and the experience. Potato pancakes were excellent. Husband got the bockwurst and brought home leftovers back to the hotel fridge for a night, then all the way home from our little trip, and made a sandwich a couple of days later and said it was even better then. I got a pork schnitzel thing that was good. Beer selection was outstanding, and the atmosophere was fun. I think I've only been to one "German restaurant" but have been to Germany, so have been to many actual German restaurants - it held up, in my opinion. Daughter loved the gift shop and especially that they even had a penny machine to add to her collection. I'd go back.
(4)Christopher T.
The plate arrived and I started to go after the plate, looked at my grandmother and laughed 'it must look like I have just gotten out of prison.' I tore up that lunch special while she went to the salad bar. The salad bar looked pretty typical so I just skipped it. I had the fried chicken and it was really good! The vegetables were 'eh and the dressing was pretty good. It came with jello but I didn't try any of it, I don't consider it food. The ambiance is really nice, the old ladies all dressed up in lil German outfits. They're so adorable! Except we got mean 'ol Bonnie. Sure that she is normally a delight, she appeared to be, but the day she found us she just wasn't havin it.
(4)Clayton P.
My wife and I were passing through Jasper and decided to try this place out. The menus had a "Super 46 Sandwiches" advertisement on it, so I decided to go with the Bratzel (the brother of the "Super 46" champion). A heaping portion of bratwurst, German fries, soft pretzel and sauerkraut greeted my lonely stomach. The brat and kraut were good, especially with the house spicy mustard added on. The real winner of the meal was the German fries, they were delicious. For desert we split the Twix cheesecake. There were little pieces of Twix bars on top and a nice carmel filled crust on the bottom. It was a very good end to a great meal. We waddled out to our car and continued our trip with smiles on our faces.
(4)Levent T.
A friendly and smart staff is a big plus in my book and this place has one. Really wanted to give them a "Yay," however, the flavor of the food is inconsistent with the hype. Items ordered: potato salad, German fries, potato glaze, beef rolladen and mini braztel sandwich. Please keep in mind I'm not a German cuisine fan or seek it out but love to get my beef and carb on when possible! Potato glaze dumpling with gravy was *delicious* but didn't like how the menu says filled with bread crumbs and then seeing a crouton in the middle. German fries were *great*...imagine hash browns kicked up a few notches with just the right amount of butter and mild herbs. The potato salad was nice and a good amount/cut of bacon added to it. The steak on the beef was tender/tasty but the filling had *way* too many onions...and I'm a fan of onions! The brat was nice but if you've had a good brat from a butcher there is nothing to "wow" you about the one they are serving. Also, the kraut is very sour and the mustard is too sweet for my tastes. A nice surprise was the blue cheese dressing that came with my salad...slightly seasoned and thick enough to use a fork is the bomb in my eyes. Overall a safe bet to wine and dine at.
(3)Barbara W.
Awesome food and service!!! When we come back to this area I WILL stop again. Soooooo good!!!!!
(5)Wayne S.
The german food was wonderful, kinda pricey though. We didn't have on e bad thing...
(5)Chad B.
This place is awesome! If you go here, you have to get the salad bar and some bread. They make their own butter/ apple butter, which is amazing. The menu is great. I have tried most of the "German staples" and was impressed. Everyone I have eaten here with has loved it and always wants to come back... Definitely a great place to stop if you are in Jasper.
(5)Amanda K.
Love this place. Every time we are close to the area we make sure we stop by. The service is awesome too. Salad bar has lots of options and very good. The Taco soup is great. The Wurst platter is the best
(5)Tim E.
How can you don't authentic German cuisine and salad bar that sets the gold standard.
(5)Bunny H.
excellent food. amazing salad buffet. my first time here, even though i'm somewhat of a local (evansville in). the staff was excellent. i have family in jasper but was referred to this place mainly by Santa Claus Land (holiday world now). so happy i finally made it. i drove here from louisville on my way home to evansville. too bad i live in LA now, can't come back too often. highly recommend this place, especially if you like a long country drive.
(5)Tommy F.
Great authentic German food and plenty of selection for beers. Service is always friendly. If smoking was banned I would give it 5 stars.
