Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Had a very rude run in while picking up takeout last night. The conversation went something like this: Me: "Hi, I'm here to pick up an order for E." Him: glances at table seating wait list "I don't have an E." Me: "No, my wife called in an order. The name would be E." Him: "Well we don't take names on call in orders." His coworker at the cash register: "Knock it off." Me: confused look "Well what do you need to know?" Him: "What's your phone number?" Me: I give my phone number and add "you could have just asked me for my phone number when I gave you my name. Thanks for being a jerk." Needless to say, the other Mexican restaurants in Jasper can have my business instead.

Americanized, bland food loosely based on Mexican food. Table side guacamole is delish. Margaritas are good.

I grew up in Jasper, and I remember when Los Bravos first opened up in their old location. It was an instant hit with the locals, and you could almost never get a table there. Jasperites are funny, too. Even when their quality and services started to decline, people have their habits and continued to go there in droves. They built a new location along the river after the Newton street extension went in (it's behind the Cinema and Days Inn). Bigger, flashier decor, and a definite increase in staff. The food is standard Americanized Mexican fare. Oozy cheeses, sauce, and dishes anyone who is remotely Hispanic would never recognize. Still, they are consistent and the service is usually quite quick and prompt. Plates arrive hot, which keeps the food warm, and the cheese sauce is the white stuff, not the hideous velveeta crap Texans have fallen in love with (I just moved to Dallas...sorry). Oh it's all a big hokey fun, but there are some staples that just about anyone can like: 1) the chips and salsa. If you like cilantro, this is some of the best salsa I've had at a 'Mexican' restaurant. And the chips are fresh. 2) Chicken on the Beach. It is, essentially, rice with diced grilled chicken, covered in cheese sauce, and served with tortillas. My family loves that dish, probably because of the simplicity. 3) Fajitas. Come on, it's fajitas! They do them right. The skillet is sizzling, and they actually bother to seriously cook the peppers, onions, and tomatoes so they aren't raw and crunchy. Comes with all the usual suspects on the side...order an extra order of tortillas and some cheese sauce to go with it. They have a fajita order that supposedly feeds 2...it feeds 4 people comfortably, with lots of extra tortillas ordered. Their margaritas and daiquiris are standard and not strong enough for me. However, the tequila sunrise never disappoints.

Friday evening and the restaurant was very busy. We were seated within ten minutes. Our waiter was at the table within a minute of being seated. He was very helpful answering questions about the menu. We were amazed how quickly the food arrived. The food was prepared as ordered. Both of us enjoyed our selections. We will be returning to Los Bravos when we visit Jasper in the future.

Today I got the worst service and the worst food ever. When I told the manager the chicken was dry she actually took my knife cut it and said only half of the chicken breast was dry. Wow seriously then told me that there was nothing she would do next time for me not to order that meal. I eat here several times a month and always get the same thing. I have NEVER had it be so dry and then for the manager to argue that it wasn't. Not very professional at all. My bill for 1 adult and 2 children was $40.91 and no I had no alcohol. They charged me extra for the cheese that COMES ON MY MEAL she said that was how they had always done it. No the menu says covered in cheese sauce that means it is included in the price of the meal. WOW VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Added insult to injury by giving me $1.05 discount on my meal.

Review ALERT: I just moved here from Tucson; the Mexican food mecca, so my reviews are to my standards, and not the the standards of a life-long Mid-westerners who love spicy food. Having said that, this place is visually beautiful and ALWAYS packed/bustling. Apparently people really like it. For me, I'm not sure it will every pass A-OK. Ground beef and American cheese do not equate to Mexican food in my mind, so I'm pretty sure I'll never get over that. I will no longer be ordering tacos or enchiladas for that reason. So sad. Like I said, we're from Tucson and we had the most epic tamales ever so my son decided that's what he would order. Once our food got to the table I immediately wanted to tell our server that he brought my son the wrong order. But no. Upon digging....literally, we found the little tamale. The plating style was beyond bizarre; a tamale, COVERED...and I mean covered with a huge mound of ground beef and enchilada sauce poured over the top of that. It was like nothing I had ever seen but being so desperate for Mexican, the boy ate it right up. I ordered a simple taco salad which was really good and I must say their chips and salsa are incredibly tasty! Make sure you order a side of cheese dip. Pretty yummy. For me this place is more of a chips/dips/margarita joint. I certainly won't come here for serious Mexican eats. BUT, like I preempted my review with...you may think it's the best around! Probably is!

Los Bravos is THE Mexican restaurant to go to in Jasper...because there's only one other one I know about. I agree with Cheryl M. in the fact that this Mexican food is not authentic, but for rural Midwest, it's good enough. For a chips/dip and beer/margarita place, it's good. For families, it's good. For a quick bite, it's good. The food comes out so fast that it makes you wonder if all the meat is precooked and just warmed up (which I'm sure it is), and every dish is smothered in either cheese, sour cream, salsa or something liquidy...which helps to hide what's underneath. I ordered an enchilada plate, with one beef, one bean, one cheese and one chicken enchilada. When it came out, I could not see any tortilla as it was completely covered in sour cream, lettuce and tomato. The chicken was dry, the beef did NOT taste like beef and was dry, the cheese was as if it had been microwaved and turned hard again and the beans..well...it's hard to mess up beans too much. At least my beer was beer. Will I go back? Yes. Why you ask? Because lots of people like it and I want to hang out with friends and family that go here...and because the waiters are really nice. Speak Spanish with them and make a new friend.

To be fair, there's not a whole lot of competition down here in Jasper for a Friday night fiesta. That said I was pleasantly surprised. Solid American-Mexican food. The beer glasses were novel and they had both Dos Equis lager and amber on tap. Margaritas are pretty syrupy- heads-up for those with weaker stomachs. If you are looking for a place to have some drinks and snacks, I give it four stars just for the huge portion of free chips/salsa we got promptly after sitting down at the bar. Menu was massive with the same 10 ingredients you come to expect at a Mexican joint. I typically base my experience on the queso, and this place gave you a generous portion of cheesy goodness. No nasty film taking over the cheese as soon as you divert your attention. My burrito supreme did come swimming in juice and lacked the refried beans listed in its description. I came to think of it as Burrito Au Jus and moved on with it. A pickier restaurant goer may have taken greater offense at this and mentioned it to the staff- can't really complain as I didn't bring it up.

Food was okay. The service was terrible. Every time anyone at my table asked for a refill or anything really our waitress got a very blatant attitude with us. I would've gone back for the food but the waitress ruined our experience.

There is none better. Quality of your food is amazing. Prepared exactly how you want it. My wife and I love this restaurant. Great atmosphere. Friendly and amazingly fast service.

This is a very brief review of the bar. I was staying at the Days Inn across the parking lot and wanted a beer before calling it a night. So I walked across the lot and found myself at Los Bravos at 9:30 PM. They close at 10 PM so the staff was already sweeping the floor and cleaning tables. I went into the bar and ordered one of the drink specials. $4.75 for a 32 oz. draft Dos Equis. Can't beat that.

So... what the hell was I doing in Jasper, IN you ask? Good question. I'm not telling you. But anyway, I was down here, sort of in the middle of nowhere with a dear friend and we needed somewhere to eat. She said it was decent food, even if it was very far from authentic, so I figured what the heck. It was this or Shoney's most likely. Overall, I was pretty pleased. The food was better than average (the steak in my burrito was chewy, but tasted okay, that's my only real complaint), which makes it spectacular as far as rural Indiana goes. The service was friendly and attentive. The actual restaurant was clean with a nice, cheesy atmosphere one would expect from a sit-down Mexican place. Now, if this were in Chicagoland, my review would probably be a bit lower, but context is important. If you find yourself stuck in southwestern Indiana, but not in Evansville, you could do much much worse.

As a vegetarian they still have options for me, the portions are good, and they have great drinks! Always great service.

I will only preface this by saying that I am not from Jasper and was visiting my in-laws when I came here. I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 because of how much they apparently love this place, and they said that this was definitely an off night. But now I'll just jump right in to my review (i know it's long, but i really do hope that you take the time to read it all): 1. Because there were 11 of us, we called Los Bravos at 6:45 to ask them if we can put our name in. They said yes and that a table can be ready in 20 mins. We got there at 7:00, took our buzzer and waited outside. 7:20 rolls around and we are all starting to get REALLY crabby. I also started noticing that other groups that are waiting outside are also complaining about how they were told it was a 20 mins wait, yet they have been waiting for a long time too. at 7:30, still no call for us, BUT all of a sudden, the other party of 11 who came AFTER us is called! I at this point am extremely pissed, so I go through the door to the hostess and I ask her what is going on. I tell her that we were told a 20 mins wait and that it has now been 45 mins. And i ask her why the other party of 11 that came AFTER us was just seated? The hostess was very flustered and i think scared by my raised voice, but she was very nice and admitted that it was their screw up that they seated the other party of 11 first. she told me she will try her best to get a table for our party as soon as possible. finally at 7:40 we were seated. FIFTY-FIVE MINUTES from when we called. Unfortunately, it did not end here....... 2. Our waitress was the most flustered woman ever. it took her forever to come take our drink order. She finally did but then disappeared again. By the time she came back, we were all ready to order our food, so when she put down our drinks, i honest to God, very KINDLY said, "Thank you, and I think we are ready to order now". She looked at me with this extremely dazed look for a good long 5 seconds and then said, "oh, yeah.. i'll be right back" and walked away! when she finally came back, she said, "i'm sorry, i thought i had took your order already". WOW! 3. A little side note: I had ordered a screwdriver. When the waitress brought our drinks, she put mine down and said " here is your screwdriver". but then she hesitates and quietly says, "at least I hope this is your screwdriver." WHAT?! 4. Ok, so here's the kicker. We sat down at 7:40 and at 8:30 we still had not gotten our food. We're all getting crabby again so my sister-in-law at the other end of the table calls the waitress over to see what is going on. She. forgot. to. put. Our. ORDER. IN!!!!!!!! OHMIGOD!!!!! My anger went straight through the roof at this point, but as my inlaws know how bad I can get when i'm angry, they told me to sit down and that they'd take care of it. The waitress told my sister-in-law that we can not leave a tip for her (you think?!) and when the manager came by he said he will give us a discount for all the trouble we went through with this, and also with the 55 mins wait we had earlier. nope not done.......... 5. We finally get our food at about 8:45, and the manager and a bunch of other guys are bringing our food out in a timely manner, probably because they know that all of us are about ready to kill them. They did get my brother-in-law's order partly wrong, but they fixed it right away. After TWO hours we have finally eaten and are ready to see what nice discount we received. The check comes.... and..... it's a measly 10% off!! that literally saved us just over ONE DOLLAR each! This is it. I call the manager over and I tell him this is ridiculous. one dollar for having been at this restaurant for 2.5 hours?! and all he does is sits there SMILING and nodding his head, saying, "sorry this is all I can do". after seeing I won't let it go, he says, "ok, let me ask up there". i don't know what "up there" means, but I let him go and i patiently wait. He comes back 5 mins later and says, "i'm sorry, they say I can't do anything". I literally was just too exhausted to fight anymore, so i just gave up. but i really should have asked him, "aren't you the manager?!" I'm sorry for all you locals who love this place, but my experience was absolutely ridiculous. It may have been an "off-night" for them, but the whole things was completely uncalled for, and all i got was a measly one dollar off my bill for having been there for a total of 2.5 hours (with only 30 mins of that being eating time). NOT. WORTH. MY. TIME.

Pretty good Mexican Restaurant. They have all the usual suspects for Americanized Mexican fare, and it's all hot and tasty. I've had better in bigger cities, but it's good in a pinch. The chili Colorado is excellent though. Their enchilada sauce seems different. A little less tomatoey than what I'm used to, but still tasty. Lots of good combos and specials and the prices are reasonable. Service is pretty good too.

Delicious food in large servings with fast service! Best Mexican food in the area!

After delving deeper into the menu I have found that any of the spicy shrimp dishes are really good. I had the chef make a shrimp covered t-bone, the result was excellent.

OK! First off, this address is wrong. Los Bravos has built a brand new building fronting Newton Street and near the Cinema and Days Inn. We stopped going to the old location because of hair in the food. But we thought we would try the new location and have been pleased with the upgraded building and furnishes. The food comes on hot microwaved plates and occasionally there are cold spots where the microwaving wasn't enough, but there is a certain security in knowing the food is prepared and frozen and shipped -- probably from the same place all mexican food sold in America is prepared, so though not outstanding, it is consistent. I'm a fan of Los Bravos because of the consistent quality, cleanliness, quick in and out and the decor. My wife and I prefer the #3 lunch, which a stuffed poblano, an enchilada and rice with a light cheese sauce. Our daughter prefers the "Speedy".

This place has fantastic Mexican (Americanized) food. It's delicious, but if you are going for healthy, forget it. Lots of cheese. The service is friendly and fast. The food is amazing and they have a large menu. Big drink menu as well. It's always clean. Plenty of vegetarian choices. Muy Bueno!
