Employee Behind the Counter: "We've been told we have one of the best cream-based soups in Indy." Uh, yeah you do! Your Local Deli's cream of mushroom soup is a pretty big deal. Frankly, I don't know if I've ever felt so strongly for soup, let alone a MUSHROOM soup. Yet there I was, frantically scraping my plastic spoon again my styrofoam container, wishing I had packed my mini spatula to ensure I had gotten every last delicious bit of it. Letting one drop go wasted was considered criminal. What's the secret to such a thick, creamy, loaded mushroom soup with a well-seasoned kick? Cayenne pepper. Who knew that one spice would transform a soup into one of Indy's best? Your Local Deli has a winning recipe that either should be shared with me or locked safely in a vault. My taste buds can't live without it!

I love that this deli has opened up in my neighborhood. Great sandwiches, sides and love the outdoor seating ( when the weather is good.) These guys have really put a lot into making a neat place to grab a yummy sandwich and soup, or just pick up some sliced meat to bing home. It's nice to have this small business that supports some other local food artisans. "Local" offers several food creations from other Irvingtonians in their cold case, fresh baked sweets and delicious breads.

I hate to do this, but it has to happen. We still come to the deli every few weeks for lunch meat, and the store is now pretty well stocked with local goodies. The products continue to be great. The lunch meat prices are great, and the other goods range from moderate to pricey. We still haven't had sandwiches, but we've earned a free one with our Flock card so I'm sure we'll cash in soon. The reason that I have to drop a star is the service :( Efficiency and urgency are sorely lacking. The last two times I've been in, I've timed how long it takes to cut the meat, and it's been 13 minutes and over 20 minutes. I just don't have that much time to dedicate to lunch meat, and I could get Boar's Head so much more quickly from the grocery store. In the spirit of the family business, some of the kids are employees, but I struggle with this, too. I think the kids are perfectly nice and normal for their ages, but I'm not sure that having them behind the counter is the best choice in terms of professionalism. I'll leave it at that. We'll still make regular trips (a 3 star review is A-OK, after all), but I would love to see things improve in the customer service department. This isn't enough to keep me away, but it might be for some people.

So prepare for your new addiction: Portobello mushroom soup, $3.50 cup, $6.50 a bowl, definitely worth it. It's amazing! I tried the rueben on toasted marble rye, very good, they did it right. I plan on making this a regular lunch spot so updates forthcoming. On my first visit I actual browsed and bought a few of their grocery items; broad ripple chips, mile coffee, and a fancy mustard that I can't remember the name of, all of which were excellent quality and taste. The only draw back is I'm not a fan of the cornerstone bread company baguettes, they are not a traditional French bread baguette but a tasteless fluffy bread. Props in all other areas, service, desserts, deli meat, grocery...this place is great!

True confession. I only stopped into Your Local Deli & Market because my original plan to hit Chef Dan's Southern Comfort was foiled by the fact that they're closed on Mondays. So, rather than pack myself up in the car again I looked around the block and decided on Your Local Deli just two doors east. Located in Irvington, it's not unreasonable to assume that accessibility will be a bit of an issue in this mostly older neighborhood. Surprisingly, Your Local Deli is pretty darn accessible with a parking lot that offers at least two non-ADA compliant parking spots (but they are at least marked). The entrance is level and with one fairly easy to maneuver door. As you go in, you're at a small, very casual dining area that is followed by the deli and order counter with a small area to the left for "market" type products. Your Local Deli & Market is a classic style deli that emphasizes products that are locally produced There's a cute "From Your Deli to Your Belly" sign and a nice Irvington-flavored chalk graphic. You shouldn't be surprised that they focus on deli meats that you can order to go, sandwiches you can eat there or take out, a variety of cheese, some beverages, and both soups and salads. You can order your food in a couple different ways. If you get a whole sandwich, most run in the $9.50 range, you get a side with options including chips, cole slaw, potato salad, and I believe something else. You can upgrade it and get soup. I've heard their soups are pretty wonderful, but I'm not much of a soup person. You can also order a 1/2 soup, 1/2 salad deal and I believe there's a deal with a 1/2 sandwich. I ended up ordering a fun concoction called the "Just Jess," a sandwich that includes Roast beef, tavern ham, pepperoni, & bacon. It was toasted, which I didn't expect...and it was absolutely incredible. While the price you pay is likely a bit higher than some places, keep in mind you're getting true quality deli meats and you're supporting local. I also ordered the cole slaw and was impressed with the serving size. It was incredibly good. They don't have fountain drinks, but I got to relive my childhood by getting a can of Choc-Ola! I spent a little over $12 for a simple, quality meal and I ate it there. The dining area is amazingly simple with a few tables. It definitely has a working class feel to it - if you require shiny surfaces and polish, this ain't your place. Personally? I enjoyed it and the handful of customers in there were all friendly. Two employees were working and they were both helpful and friendly. Once I finished my dinner, I looked around the market a bit and noticed they carried some dessert items along with some local coffees and other items including Cornerstone Bread. This is one of those little "diamond in the rough" kind of places. I have a hard time calling it a five-star, not because there was anything particularly wrong but because it just doesn't quite rise to that level for me. That said, I instantly felt like I was a fan of the place and I'm positive I'll return when I'm in the area. I do wish they'd offer a bit more selection in the beverage department, but I left feeling relaxed and satisfied with the meal. I'm not sure if they still offer outside dining during warmer weather, but it sure makes sense and Irvington remains a terrific place to hang out.

Okay, so I feel like I gave this place the benefit of the doubt when I first visited because I really wanted it to succeed. Was it the best club, best Philly, best pasta salad we had ever had? No. But I didn't expect it to be, especially since they were just getting off the ground. That being said, our first visit was pleasant enough, the food was good, and we agreed to stop by again at some point. This updated review is due to my most recent experience. Last Sunday, we (my boyfriend and I) visited around 12:30 pm. Hearing such great things about the mushroom soup, I decided to do the half-and-half, pairing it with half of a club (the sandwich that I enjoyed on my first visit). My boyfriend went with the Italian and chips. We had hoped that the owners might have invested in a fountain machine or fresh iced tea since our last visit, but the only drink options were bottled sodas/tea/water. Not a big deal, it was just something we had hoped would change from our first visit. Then our food came. Everyone is totally right when it comes to the mushroom soup. It's spectacular! Creamy, with little bits of mushroom so you get some in every bite. it also has a little cayenne or some other hot spice in it to give a little, teensy-weensy kick at the end of every bite. The sandwich, however, was a bummer. Shredded lettuce fell all over the tray as I lifted my top piece of bread up to find a mushy, unappetizing pile of tomatoes. I picked them up and flung them off onto the tray. Then, as I took a few bites, I noticed that there wasn't any bacon on my sandwich. Usually, I would've gotten someone's attention, but I was very hungry and pretty annoyed at the tomatoes (I know how dumb that sounds), so I just kept eating. It was a pretty good turkey, ham, lettuce and mayo sandwich after all, just not the club I was looking forward to. So this is why I'm docking my review only one star. I didn't get up. I work in the food industry and I know how easy it is to fix something and how much of a big deal it ISN'T to ask for it. I almost didn't write this all out because maybe it was a fluke, but here's why I did.... There are local business owners who heavily endorse this business, businesses that I frequent and adore. I thought to myself, "Would THAT business owner send out gnarly tomatoes? Or would they bring my sandwich without them and say 'Sorry, they're just not up to par today'?" I can honestly say the latter (although I don't think they serve tomatoes, but that's beside the point). At the end of the day, I was put in a "Do I?" or "Don't I?" position, all over some tomatoes and bacon. I still want this spot to do well and I think they will. I'm still going to come in and devour some Boar's Head AND that delicious soup. But as of right now, it's "A-OK."

Simple but delicious food! Sadly enough the staff are so rude and obviously not happy to be here. I'll probably come back because it's pretty cheap and in a good spot but I'd think the owner would consider hiring happier people.... Or maybe just some people who care a little bit more

Very friendly and inviting staff! I love that they have a lot of local and farm fresh products! Great sandwiches.

If you came to Your Local Deli & Market and had a bad first impression you should make a return trip now that it's been in business for a couple months. My wife and I stopped by here a few times shortly after the shop had opened and were pretty disappointed. The shelves were barren and they weren't selling deli meat yet (we really wanted this shop to replace our weekly Boar's Head supply run to the Marsh downtown). In the past month it's really shaped up. They now have a scale and are slicing deli meat to go. The prices are the same as they are downtown (we learned the other day from another grocery chain on the south side that Boar's Head tightly regulates what their products can sell for, so what you're paying at one shop will essentially be the same as the next). The proximity is great, but what really sells it is the owners' willingness to take requests. We mentioned that we wished they had Pepper Turkey, the next week we came in and they had it in stock for us (and told us that it had become their most popular lunch meat and they'd gone through an entire turkey breast already). The once sparse shelving is starting to fill up with merchandise as well. They exclusively sell local indy made products (sauces, local homemade edibles, produce, wooden kitchen wares, etc). It gives us something to peruse while waiting for our order to be sliced and packaged. There's still room for improvement, but every week the offerings seem to grow a little. The sandwiches all look delicious, but we haven't tried anything yet. They're a little pricey for the area, and sides are sold separately which adds to the cost. We'll get there eventually but for now we're sold on their deli meats and eagerness/willingness to accommodate us.

Chipotle chicken sandwich, aka 'The Sultry' is so delicious!! This Deli has become a local favorite of ours! Great people, great atmosphere, and most importantly, GREAT FOOD!

GREAT little local hole-in-the-wall. I was just driving by, and decided to stop in...glad that I did! REAL ingredients, tasted fresh. The broccoli salad was unexpectedly delicious. Real soda to wash down the "Sloppy Mary" sandwich, which was loaded with turkey and real roast beef on rye ...I will definitely be back!

This place used to be outstanding. Slow, but outstanding. Then there was major ownership drama and they went downhill so fast. I feel like I'm supposed to support them because they're my neighborhood deli, but stale bread, sloppy sandwiches, no toppings on a club, and half rotten fruit just isn't going to cut it. Plus, they're even slower than they used to be! Please step up your game. The people of Irvington will only take it for so long. I mean, they're sandwiches. It's not that hard.

this place is amazing!!!! I have just moved to the area about 6 months ago, and I have fallen in LOVE! the food is amazing the staff is friendly, if your in the area, or not it's worth the drive, you will not be dissapointed by what they have to offer!

This place is fantastic, the staff is friendly every time I go in, and the food is great! Their mushroom soup is indeed tasty, and the daily soups that I've had the opportunity to try have all been outstanding too. Last time I went in I took a friend for his first time, we both got the soup and half-sandwich. We both thought everything was excellent, but as we were walking out after eating the owner stopped us and said "Sorry, I hope everything was okay, I noticed your sandwiches looked a little small, you guys want some cookies for the road?" The food is great, the prices are great, and the people behind the counter are always nice, it's a great place to stop for lunch!

Having just opened, I think my views on this place will refine over time. Nevertheless, Your Local Deli is starting off strong. Being that the Kroger locations near Irvington don't have Boar's Head meat, I was excited to have a place that would cut me up some nice lunch meat and cheese. They also serve sandwiches, soups, and salads. I had their Reuben and while I wasn't expecting perfection early on, it was a pretty damn good sandwich. My family got their version of a Philly cheese steak and it looked tasty...and enormous. The only downside is that these sandwiches will set you back close to $10 depending on which one you get. They are large, but you couldn't go there every day for lunch by any means. They also had unique uses of bacon (chocolate, cheesecake, etc.) in the deli counter and tasty midwestern condiments for sale including a nice bourbon barrel aged Worcestershire that my wife and I already dig. If you have kids, they have a children's area with toys and even have appropriate chairs where you can rest your baby's car seat and not worry that it will topple over a high chair. The owner said he'd worked in restaurants for ages and had seen it happen, and that's an excellent bonus for us and our 3 month old. The owners are very friendly people as well, frequently touching base with the customers and making sure everyone is happy. You can tell they care about what they do. They get 4 stars for now because of Irvington accessibility of great meats, cheeses, quirky condiments, and pretty good sandwiches..and I hope they build on what they have and become an Irvington staple much like Goose the Market has done in Fall Creek/Herron Morton.

Just ate the best Mushroom Soup in the city. Yes, better than Palomino.

This place is sooo good! I have been there about 4-5 times and will keep going back as long as I live in the area. Where to start? I have been getting their BLTs lately, and they started making them with this tomato jam instead of slices, and it makes the sandwich. It's sweet and savory and the whole sandwich is just delicious. The cranberry turkey sandwich is pretty good, and I just tried their chopped salad with balsamic vinegarette dressing...yum! Of course I can't go without mentioning their famous Portabella mushroom soup...to die for! Literally the best soup I've ever eaten. And the fact that you can buy a jar and take it home makes it all the more awesome. I can't wait to go back and try more things!! Love it!!

I really liked this place tried it yesterday. I had a sample of the.mushroom soup very very good. The Reuben was pretty good not excellent I guess I like a lot of 1000 island but really good. The staff was amazing nice awesome friendly people. As Arnold says I'll be back

Had the turkey cranberry sandwich and apple coleslaw. It was awesome. Only thing I would have done differently would be to add the lettuce and tomato she offered. Very nice workers.

Best Deli I have ever been to PERIOD! I couldn't wait to write this review. Every now and then a business just gets it right. From the people, to the food, to the decor, this place is top notch. I tried it for the first time 2 days ago, and I went back again today. They remembered me, they remembered my order, they gave me suggestions and once again the food was outstanding. Both times I have had a Horseradish/roast beef sandwich that was incredible. Plenty of heat in the horseradish, but not overpowering. They talked me into the soup on my first visit...I'm not much of a soup guy, but I appreciate when someone is proud of their product so I gave it a try. It may have changed my life. This is a mushroom soup that is thicker than expected and the flavor is just incredible. I liked it so much I immediately ordered a large container to bring back to work and share with my friends. An hour later I hated myself for giving it to my friends, I should have kept it all to myself. Awesome cheeses and meats from Boarshead. Great people, unique sandwiches, and soup that changes the way you look at life. I would give 6 stars if it was an option.

My wife and I went for our first time the other day. The sign on the door that said "bacon is a condiment " was the first indication that this was going to be a great lunch. The next was the wonderful smell as we opened the door. We were welcomed by the owner who made some great suggestions. I decided on the Drunken Radish, a roast beef sandwich with horseradish cheddar and a horseradish aioli on marble rye. Delicious! The item you have to order is the mushroom soup. I can't think of an adjective that's adequate to describe it. Just go try it and you will understand. I will be going back many more times.

Was working in Indianapolis and decided to try this place out for lunch after reading all the positive reviews. They did not disappoint! The staff were some of the friendliest people I have ever seen in a restaurant. The menu was extensive but i finally decided on the Chicken Cordon Bleu and it was great and very reasonably priced. I will definitely be back.
(5)Steve O.
Food was awesome! I had the "Mrs O." Sandwich which was one of the best Italian beef sandwiches I've ever tasted. They also have Boars Head meats which are out of this world good! Overall my friends and I rated it a "MUST GO!"
(5)Nancy M.
Loved their mushroom soup and Danwich. Everyone who works there was awesome. I'll be returning to try their Reuben sandwich.
(5)Marcy B.
As a chef I'm always looking for great new places to eat, and was very excited to see this local deli opening in my neighborhood of Irvington . However sandwich portions are huge. Nothing truly unique about the sandwiches to make me want to go back and spend $14 for a lunch. My boyfriend couldn't eat his Italian sandwich on a hogie because there was 5 ounces of meat and they built it like a taco so all the toppings fell out. Still a new place so I will give them a few weeks and then go back. Maybe the soup of the day will be something other than mushroom.
(2)MC M.
Great new place in Irvington! Must try! I have a new favorite. The staff and owners were very pleasant and friendly. Spoke with one of the owners as I sip over a delicious creamy mushroom soup. The veggie option was "to die for". Thanks for your hospitality and wish you the best!
(5)Paul W.
Nice little place. The staff was helpful and I was served quickly. I got the ham and Swiss with a side of potato salad and a bottled drink for about $9. The sandwich was stacked pretty tall with toppings and was quite tasty. Not to many tables in the place, but I was able to find a seat during lunch. I'd recommend that they add some 2 tops or bar seating. Overall, positive experience.

I was in the area and decided to try something new and timely. Impressed with the Boar's Head selection on the website, I decided to go in. What a surprise! Apricot Jam added to a turkey sandwich is genius! A+ Would love to stop in again.
