The giant double cheeseburger blew me away. It is reminiscent of a Streak N' Shake burger, but actually good. The soda is served in a can with and optional glass. Very laid back but great quality and flavor. Another thing that was excellent was the staff. Super friendly and helpful. The waitress heard us talking about how we wanted to go to the Indianapolis Indians Baseball game, but the good seats were sold out. She went on a mimi-quest to help us find seats. That's how you do great customer service, folks. Go above and beyond. Only drawback, and it's a small one, is it's cash only. Saddle up to the bar and get you a hot burger, cold beer, and maybe a shot or 2.

There's a special place in my heart for greasy spoon establishments, and Workingman's Friend definitely fits the criteria. I'll save you some time on ordering: just go for the double cheeseburger. I'd put it up against any diner burger in Indy - thin burger patties, a little crispy around the edges and served up quick. Be aware that you have to be over 21 to dine here. Otherwise, enjoy it!

There are a lot of things that this place is and a lot of things it isn't. If you're a carnivorous foodie with an appreciation for history, this place has to go on your must visit list. If you're an organic only, vegetarian, vegan, gluten adverse or clean eating type, don't bother. This place is simple...flat top burgers are its staple and they are consistently delicious for just exactly what they are. I agree with a previous review that said they are what Steak and Shake originally aspired to serve. No, you will not be asked how you would like yours cooked or get a choice of specialty cheeses or other toppings, but if you can appreciate an old school classic burger, you will never be disappointed. As a side, I recommend the sour cream seasoned fries, but I've heard the onion rings are pretty good too. Your beer choices are bud and bud light on draft. Not sure if they have bottles and I wouldn't dream of asking for wine, but they do have a full bar. Beer comes in impressively sized schooners and mixed drinks and iced tea come in mason jars. Soda comes in cans. The building itself shows its history. Concrete and glass blocked warehouse front looking place with chipped apart block tile floors that look original. Cash only! Although they have updated their cash registers since the last time I was here from the 1950's style to something that probably came out of the 80's, plastic is still not and likely will never be an option. As much as I appreciate the simplicity and classic style and taste of the food, the history that the owner told me is what I love best. It was her grandfather's place back when the railroads were booming. Working men came in on their way through on their lunch breaks and the local ones made it their after work dinner and drink stop. Times where tough then and the owner would let the men run tabs for their food until payday. Hence the name! Somehow, I bet that if the current owner knew you well enough and you were in a tight spot, she'd let you do the same thing. Try and find another place like that in the city! Not that most of the clientele these days has any trouble paying a tab. If you come in for lunch on a weekday, you'll find a parking lot full of luxury cars and a dining room full of lawyers. In fact, the only reason I know of this place is because an older lawyer colleague took me here when I was a newbie. Had an interview for a lawyer gig here once too! That said, it's obviously popular with the locals and overall, I just love the diversity in the clientele. One note, the surrounding area isn't the best and that is recognized by the hours. Don't plan on coming here for a late night burger. Not so safe and it won't be open.

You know that one scene from your favorite movie, where the whistle blows and all of the tired workers trudge off to their favorite spot to drink and eat away their paycheck? Workingman's Friend is precisely that spot. White, blue, or no collar, all are welcome to have a beer and a nice juicy burger. It's a no frills sort of food, but it tastes good and it definitely scratches that culinary itch after a long day (or morning) at work. Just remember to leave the interns (e.g. minors) at work and bring cash.

So it's kind of hard to say that this place isn't at all trendy, since it is always filled with lawyers (the AG's office loves the place). On the other hand, no one could accuse lawyers of being hip, so it is hardly a hipster place. What this place is is an ancient blue collar tavern that has kept it entirely real. From the massive Hoosier pork tenderloins to the char of the gods cheeseburgers to the 60's era national cash register to the cabinets with wooden sliding doors to the front of wall of the bar consisting of glass blocks. The owner/bartender is a super nice lady and the patrons are generally pretty interesting. I wish it was open longer hours, but much of the blue collar base has moved away from the neighborhood. It is because it is such a special place that people make the trip to go there. The fact that it is pretty run down (though very clean) somewhat adds to the charm, but I wish they would fix some of the broken glass blocks and maybe put some retro vinyl on the floor (currently the floor is 'covered' with probably 50's era vinyl that is 70% gone). Go here, get burger and a high life, and see what bars were like before chains and hipsters.

Trillist and Business Insider both gave this place the Best Burger in Indiana title, so of course I have to check this out. Plenty of parking, decent amount of seating, especially if you don't mind sharing a big table. Good service. CASH ONLY. The burgers were handmade and then cooked on a flat top grill; they must have been drained because they weren't nearly as greasy as you'd expect. Decent onion rings, fresh produce, good fries. Nothing revolutionary here, but if you're a burger person, you can't miss this classic.
(4)Kristin N.
NO CHILDREN ALLOWED!!!! The sign says restaurant and bar but kids are not allowed inside. Only 21+ only at all hours. Haven't eaten there yet because I couldn't go inside with my child
(3)Charles W.
This is one of the top three burgers I've ever had in my life (tied with the burger at Good Stuff Eatery in DC and In-N-Out Burger.) I first had the double cheeseburger on a trip to Indy four years ago. Now, I was sure I loved it, but between the fact that I went after Carb Day and the fact that it was four years ago, I wondered if I was just letting memories take control of my taste buds. Nope. Went back this year (BEFORE) Carb Day. Yup, the burger is still the bees knees. Crispy on the outside, all good on the inside. I got it without fixins to really taste the burger, but adding to it won't detract from its taste. Also, get the onion rings. The fries are kinda meh. ALSO, if you don't get a schooner of beer, you're doing it all wrong.
(5)Jennifer B.
Friendly and fast service! We got in and got out with no issues. Loved the tenderloin! Probably one of the best I have ever had!
(4)Abbey B.
What Steak n' Shake WANTED to be. Go for the crispy double burger with sour cream & chive fries, wash it down with a chalice of bud light, pay with cash. Delicious, The end.
(5)Evan F.
Excellent burger and fries, OK service. I came here on a Friday for lunch with a group of 7 and it took about 20 minutes before our orders were taken after we were seated. I understand a slight delay with bigger parties but the wait we had didn't seem consisted with how busy they were. It seems like this place is always busy for lunch but it never seems to actually be full. The giant double burger was very tasty - thin patties kind of like what you would expect at a Steak n Shake but better quality. As far as the fries go, definitely get the seasoned fries; they're far better than the regular fries. And don't forget it's CASH ONLY and you MUST be 21 to come in, even just for lunch!
(3)Dawn Z.
Just walked in at 1pm on a Friday. Restaurant was NOT full and we were told as we sat down that it would take over an hour to get any food. Do they just grill one burger at a time? It's not like burgers and fries take that long to make.
(1)Eric V.
Good burger. Good service. Decided I should hit the place up during my stay in Indy after seeing it on NUVO's 'Best of Indy' list for 'Best Burger.' I believe they finished second to Bru Burger (which seems accurate to me -- totally different experiences: gourmet burger vs greasy dive bar burger). The place looks quite underwhelming from the outside. Kind of an, "Oh. THIS is the place?!" kind of thought as you pull up to a clear dive bar. Upon entering, that feeling subsided as it took on the appearance of a normal diner/sports bar. The place was clean, so that's all that mattered (well, that and the food). I was greeted by a very friendly server. She asked if I'd dined there before then shared they were known for their double cheeseburger. I replied, "Then that's what I'm getting." When my burger arrived, it looked like Steak n' Shake on steroids. The same style. Same gristly ends. But it tasted much better. I don't really know what else to add to this. It's a place I enjoyed enough, but I wouldn't make a special trip to experience again. A solid 3 stars.
(3)Michael J.
First time visit thanks to a co-worker. By far one the best burgers I've eaten.
(4)Eric A.
Went there last Friday night with my family. My cousin heard of this place all way down in TN, so we checked it out. I loved the authenticity of the place, because I look out the window and see two bullet holes. The server told him they close at 8 because of the neighborhood, which from looking round you can see why. BUT This did not take away from the food. Burgers all of us thought were really good. Beer cold was cold, and I like drinking my coke out of a can! And damn wouldn't you know it, I walk in for the first time and see someone I hadn't seen in 24 years, and I am only 34. He to was eating there for the first time.
(4)Darryel P.
Very good burgers! The place gives me a very old fashioned feel. Maybe because it is design wise. But none the less the burger was on point with all the good reviews I read before coming.
(4)allison s.
mmm... so good!
(4)Vasiliki G.
There is nothing special about these burgers, except that they are some of the best burgers I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of burgers, all over the country. I couldn't tell you why they are so darn good, since the ingredients are about as common and mundane as you can get. But there's some magic going on in that kitchen. The service is mediocre at best, the atmosphere is noisy and lackluster, but none of that matters. That's how good the burgers are. Believe me when I tell you, you will not be disappointed.
(5)Christian K.
Burgers were great. Love the old diner feel. The sour cream fries were different. All sides are ala carte. Will be back.
(4)Taylor S.
I had always heard of this place and how good their burgers were and it is now my pleasure to say I have finally tasted their delicious cheeseburgers. I wasn't sure what to expect when going here but with all that I had heard I was expecting a little more curb appeal upon arrival. Although it wasn't quite what I was expecting the name sort of fits the style of building and atmosphere inside. I will look forward to coming back.
(5)Brittany L.
The drink glasses are really small...like juice glasses. I was so thirsty, I felt like I needed a refill every other drink I took. The burgers are the flat Steak-N-Shake style. I don't really like those crispy flat burgers. The "double" which was on special for lunch and had what my boss calls an "interbun" (like a Big Mac has). Fries are slightly thick-cut, from Sysco I'm fairly certain. They were fresh and hot. I'm sure I'll go back again, but I'll try something else like the tenderloin or chili. My coworkers had onion rings and those looked pretty great. Service was quick and our tiny glasses stayed filled for the most part. The burger wasn't bad, I just didn't realize the meat was going to be flat and crispy. I want to go back at Christmas time. The bright green walls and bright red chairs made me feel all festive.
(3)M L.
Came for LUNCH with my Godparents (I'm 19) & we all got kicked out because I'm not 21! No one in our party was drinking, we only came for lunch. We explained our situation to the waitress (who had already confirmed I was over 18) and her boss, who had now come over to our table as well. We ended up having to eat our lunch outside, not even on the tailgate of our SUV because it was raining, but inside of the car! So ridiculous!
(2)Olga S.
It used to be the best kept secret in Indy but now it's just the best! Good burgers- crispy edges, buttered bun. Cash only, easygoing, & very relaxed atmosphere. A plain good tavern to grab a beer and a burger, cheers!
(5)Dave G.
Great burgers, chili, and fries...which were the only things we tried. I love the fact that they have left this place with an old-school vibe (except maybe for the fact that they don't take credit cards). They use an old-timey cash register, which adds to the nostalgia. The owner came by and spoke with us and was very nice. The restaurant has been in her family for almost 100 years. Great place to check out!
(5)Peter P.
The burgers are what this place is known for and they don't disappoint. They're kind of like Steak N Shake burgers, except that they're good. Get double cheeseburger and be done with it. Draft beer is mainstream swill exclusively, but they have craft/local beers in bottles.
(3)Ami H.
Husband and I decided to check out all new restaurants for our dining choices in 2015. Heard about this place and put it on the list. Food was fine, service was slow. Probably won't return..
(3)George V.
Hipster Haven w/out the hipsters...thank god! Ok, as far as the food goes, it is fan frickin' tastic. The double cheeseburger with crispy thin patties, slightly greasy on a modest size bun with all the old school trimmings was worth every calorie. Perfectly cooked fries (if you like them seasoned and well done) accompanied the burger and a chalice (36oz) of ice cold bud washed it down. Get the goblet, it comes from the freezer and really completes the meal. The service is top notch. Old school charm, with experience written all over the waitstaff and proprietor's faces. It's a family owned operation for decades. The years have given the place incredible charm and the original floor has what Antiques Roadshow would call "patina." Two original cig machines are there (empty of course), with a worn sign requiring $2.25 a pack. Brilliant decor throughout. Here's the best part, it is an ultra hipster joint without the hipsters. I guess the place is too far or Belmont is too pothole ridden for the vermin to ride there bikes or Vespas. A huge win! Oh, if those walls could talk, they'd tell quite a story I'm sure. Check er out!
(4)Bob C.
This place is good for lunch. Although nothing great. It is not technically a hole in the wall, because there is no local clientele. Mostly suits and yuppies that feel tough by eating in a rough looking place. The three stars are for the price to quantity ratio, and the limited menu.
(3)Peres G.
Decided to give this place a try regardless of the outer exterior. A friend of mine told me this place was amazing so after class I decided I was starving and made my way to Belmont avenue. I kind of wished I settled for steak n shake instead. Service was prompt and friendly. I went with the double cheeseburger, and it was way to greasy. I actually had gotten a stomach ache from all the greese. The fries were bland I recommend the seasoned fries instead. I won't say this place is awful, its just nothing special about it. Also everything is ala cart and there's a pretty cool bar with an old cash machine they use. The place is pretty old and has a vintage vibe to it so I had to give it at least 3 stars for that fact alone.
(3)Richard H.
The best burger in Indianapolis? Yeah, probably. They're thin patties, crispy around the edges, and if you order the double (as you should), they're separated by an extra slice of bun. That's a practice I'm not overly fond of -- even in the most popular incarnation of the club sandwich -- but here the patties and cheese melt into the bun, and the toppings into all of that, making the sandwich something of a deliciously organic whole. Some have called it a dive, which makes me wonder just exactly what some people consider a dive. Sure, it's unassuming (to say the least) from the outside, and the rest rooms are a little rundown, but otherwise it's a clean, bright space reminiscent of the road houses of old. The fries are pretty unexciting, the service quite friendly and prompt.
(4)John M K.
Indianapolis landmark at 96 years owned by the same family- great (cheap) food, ice cold beer, and good service. Can't go wrong with the double cheeseburger. Cash only.
(5)John M.
Beautiful bit of 50s/60s architecture (glass block front, Formica bar), lots of space, 32oz buds, cheap tasty eats, selection of local beers in the bottle, what more do you need?
(4)Poppy F.
Last time I will ever eat there. Hamburgers are good, but the light, long hair, RUDE waitress will eventually make that restaurant lose a lot of business. Ordered the mushrooms for the first time and they were absolutely gross! Mushrooms weren't done on the inside and after cutting one open with a knife, it smelled spoiled. Set those to the side, thinking she would ask if there was a problem. NO!!! When she brought the check, I said the mushrooms weren't done on the inside, her response was, you should had said something, I would had refired them. REALLY? Isn't that a health code violation? I almost said, you never came back to the table, in order for me to say something. Took them away and didn't take them off of my check. Not the first time she has been rude to people. LAST TIME FOR US!!!!!! I'm not going to argue over 4.00, but my family, friends, co-workers and everyone who reads yelp, will hear my story.
(1)David A.
When you need a great burger and a cold beer. This place is a throwback. Menu is on the chalkboard, but order the double cheeseburger and get a fishbowl of cold draft macro brew. Go early because they close up shop before the neighborhood spoils the parking.
(4)Amy S.
Yuuuuummmmmmwwwwwaaaaa! Flat burgers with a crispy edge and good thick fries. Simple, to the point, no fuss, no muss. Staff is super friendly and prices are low. No menus, its all on a board but its big enough to read from anywhere in there. All walks of are welcome :) I will definately be back . . . as much as I possibly can. I had forgotten it was cash only, luckily my friend was able to spot me. I did overhear a waitress nicely explain where some ATMs were to some other customers. Also, I saw some other reviews talking about the service being slow. That was definately NOT my experience. Our waitress was all over it! She knew I was waiting on a friend and came right over when she got there. Big plus: during the lunch rush I never saw the bottom of my glass of tea!
(4)Linda R.
People you have got to stop the insanity!!! I had read so many fabulous reviews for this place there was no way I couldn't give it a try. The thin pork fritter they were passing off as a Hoosier Tenderloin was disappointing. I mean really prefab pork fritters??!!! If you want a real Hoosier Tenderloin give the Gas Light Inn a try. NOW THOSE ARE DELICIOUS!! the staff at Workingman were quite friendly but overall will not return for another disappoinitng experience.
(1)Sean D.
I would compare this place to Ben's Chili Bowl (in Washington, D.C.) because both are over-hyped and not that good.
(2)Craig U.
Best cheeseburger in Indy...and possibly anywhere!!! The service is very good. Most of the staff has been there a long time. The place can be very busy at lunch as many people make the short trek from downtown Indy to partake. It's we'll worth it at anytime.
(5)Sonya A.
This is the place hole of the walls dream of being. The dingy, hidden place with the most marvelous juicy tenderloin ever. And cheap! What more can you ask for? Don't forget the place gets packed at lunch and is cash only! Food: 5/5 Location: 3/5 Service: 4/5
(4)Karla S.
Burgers are great and beers are cold. Awesome retro atmosphere with friendly service and good food. They do have diet plate options but I would recommended splurging on the diet here.
(5)Hula B.
the food looked great. unfortunately didn't get to try it because they were running a 40 minute wait on a Friday lunch around 1:30. The place was less than 1/2 full, and she said it is always a long wait on thursdays and fridays. I guess they never fill up- since they can't keep up with a 1/2 full place. it's a shame because the burgers did look good. but i don't know any 'working men' who have 40 minutes to wait to place an order for a cheeseburger - so, IMO, they don't seem very friendly to those of us who work for a living. looked like they served cans of soda though instead of having a fountain. a decent bar should have soda that comes through a soda gun. so i guess if i ever have 2 hours to kill to go get a burger, and don't mind paying cash, and don't mind a sub-par drink made with canned soda, i could consider this place again.
(2)Marcus M.
I've never had a burger like the one I ate at this place. Excellent! Burger patties pressed incredibly thin and cooked until well-done and crispy. They are known for the double cheeseburger and that is what you should order; though the grilled cheese is good as well. Beers come in three sizes: 10 oz., 16 oz., and a ridiculous 32 oz. Fun place to eat and the waitstaff is very friendly.
(5)Gregg S.
A friend of mine told me he was going to take me to the Workingman's Tavern. Little did I realize it was in the neighborhood. I left over 50 years ago and clearly is the best thing going there now. It brought back a flood of great memories. It was topped by a spectacular hamburger, among the best I've ever had, and great onion rings. Cash only, but if you lived in this neighborhood it's the way we did things.
(5)CM W.
A true dive with great food. I went for dinner after a long hiatus and was so happy it was just as great as always. The burgers are crispy and perfect and the best onion rings I have had EVER. The beer was cold and reasonably priced. I was with a couple of first timers. Our server was very friendly and made my first timer friends feel very welcome. I will make sure not to stay away so long again. Bring cash.
(5)Dan D.
If you are looking for a fofo restaurant with low fat meals you can modify to exactly what you want. Or have a really picky wife or girlfriend that takes 10 minutes to order... Forget about it! Great old school bar food. You will find everyone from ditch diggers to the movers and shakers of Indy including statehouse politicians. Also professional athletes, Indy drivers and sports team owners eat here. The ultimate dive.
(5)Chris P.
You have to ask what is the best Burger? Then you have to ask what version? Burgers are like chili, pizza ext. Several different styles and versions. Is this the best thin grilled patty Burger? It is at the very top, but have not had the best yet I think. Onion Rings are also at the top of the list. Bring cash and enjoy the atmosphere.
(5)Brad K.
Is it truly 5 star? I don't know about you, but for me its mostly about the food, and partly about the tradition and buzz. I've eaten at the Workingman's Friend probably 100 times, but two weeks ago, took my friend Steve for his rookie visit. I tried not to raise that bar too high, but what can I say, its one of my favorites! The crispy-edged burgers, hot french fries and cold Coke beckon me back every time. On our way out, we passed the Governor on his way in and confirmed that he wasn't there to cut any deals with local legislators, he was there to EAT! Steve must have liked it too. He went back the very next day and took his boss for lunch. Now who's the rookie?
(5)John W.
We just got home from here. Friday April 10th. They only have soda in the cans but I was OK with that, they taste better, you just have to pay for each refill. I got a cocktail and it was decent. We both got the Double Cheeseburgers and I added bacon to mine. It was amazing. I also ordered a cup of their bean soup. It was full of ham and was really good, if I was to complain about anything I wish they would have used a little less salt. But it was still very good. I did not like the onion rings but the other person with me did and so did the 20 or so others that i saw eating them in the restaurant. They are cash only. The place doesn't look as bad as I had envisioned by reading other reviews but then it is not anything to write home about either. But the place was very clean to be such an old building. They have bad hours as we usually eat dinner much later but hey you take what you can get. We will definitely be back for sure.
(4)Larry T.
Working Mans Friend is an Indianapolis Landmark since 1918. Becky is a third generation proprietor at this same location Great burgers and beer and reasonably priced A good eatery!!
(4)J M.
Excellent food, I love the double cheese burger with fries or onion rings. Bring cash and don't expect super fast service and lunch time. The neighborhood gets rough after dark, lunch time is when you want to be there.
(5)Jeff D.
Cash only. Amazing burgers. Fast service. You go there for one thing. You get it. You're gone. What makes the burgers so good? If the answer was so easy, everyone would be able to replicate it. They just are. Don't bother testing out the other items. You came here for the burger. Get it.
(4)Jon A.
Not often do I have a hankerin' to eat beef. In fact, I steer clear of it on purpose. It takes days to digest, so if said hankerin' happens it must be fulfilled as it's more rare than steak tartare. Even more rare is when a place is so well known for their burger that they induce said hankerin'... and that's just what this joint up & did with all the scuttlebutt I've heard for a good three years now. And, we planned lunch there and I knew it was coming so said hankerin' was slowly being built all week with much salivation. When I thought we were noshing on a Friday, I got a call from my tablemate, Taffy of Sun King Brewing (not just serving good decisions of beer, but good decisions on lunch, too), sayin' "hey, lunch, it's today [doofus]". Okay he didn't call me Doofus... but he should have. At any rate... the burger day was a day earlier -- yay! Because I wanted to say "Jumbo," I almost ordered the "Jumbo Burger," and if I did, we would've been able to say "Jumbo" in unison; alas, the double cheeseburger I read about and saw photos of steered me to that classic. And damn it feels good to be a gangsta and be a gangsta lucky enough to have eaten this pounded flat steak burger, charred on the edges with pieces of The Char Of The Gods! It had the perfect belljar figure of the classic double steakburger: thick, dense in the middle then flappy flat on the ends and edges. I've eaten at Carl's Drive In in STL (purported origin of the steakburger America loves at Steak N Shake & In N Out), and it was good but it wasn't pounded as flat as this, nor do I remember it having The Char of The Gods. Although they serve only piss beer, they serve it in a giant schooner and that I had to do because I believe in the placebo power of presentation; it worked. Although it's not the nicest place in the world, and maybe my expectations were really low... it was clean enough and air-y. We got there after the lunch crowd (if there was one) and plenty of seats to choose from without a wait. I will say though: the fries downright sucked. Now that I see Jess H's awesome photo: it's onion rings next time (I knew I should've pulled the trigger). And I'm giving it four stars because four stars says, "Yay! I'm a fan," and they would hate to hear "yay!" being belted out with a heel click in The Workingman's Friend, so I'll say it here on Yelp where "Yay!"s and heel clicks are entirely permissible -- if not rewarded. With a heel click, outside of Workingman's Friend, by the chicken coop for propane, "Yay! I'll be back!"
(4)David G.
Interesting to say the least! I have visited Workingman's Friend 3 times, I haven't been there in a couple of years for reasons below, however, that place is distinctly in my memory for sure. The decor is very classic, as in you can see that this place has been around for many years, and was drab-- to me this was the coolest aspect of eating there-- it felt very authentic, like a local neighborhood pub in the early 20th century would've felt like. The place can be a little bit of a culture shock if you have not been before-- for starters, it is cash only, and they make no mistake about letting you know that. Secondly, the menus are on the wall. Third, your drinks come in what appears to be mason jars of all things. Eating here is pretty simple, just order the Double Cheeseburger. The Double Cheeseburger Platter is very similar to a Steak and Shake double platter-- except 50% larger, and similiar in taste too, which is good. If you are a fan of Steak and Shake, you will enjoy the burger here for sure. The burger here is good, however it is not great. In example, Five Guys makes a better burger IMO. If you are downtown in the area, swing by for sure. Just don't make say, a 20-mile drive to eat here, you may get disappointed. One area I was not happy with (and appalled with actually) was the downright RUDE waitresses that worked on the lunch crowd. There really is no excuse for an attitude from any wait staff, period. Also it wasn't that busy and wait times were still quite long, almost as if the establishment was telling you "We don't care how we treat you and how long you wait, you will come back because of our burgers!!" That treatment combined with the "style" of this restaurant have kept me away from this place-- it gave me a funky vibe when I was there last. I think about 50% of the people enjoy the burger and keep coming back, and the other 50% will find it to be nothing special.
(3)Michelle Q.
Food is cheap, decor is crap but you won't care because the cheeseburger is why you are here. Right :) Tenderloin, onion rings, and bean soup are perfection. Go hungry because the food is plentiful and you won't leave a crumb.

favorite burger so far in Indianapolis. Have tried two other places on yelp's top 5, this was by far the best. Can't wait to go back for a double burger!

I expected move of a dive, but, while the interior is cheap, it was brighter, cleaner and less dingy than I expected. The dining area was almost full, even after 1pm. The double cheeseburger was good, even very good, but not great. For my $$ Boogie Burger has a better burger. The bun was an off-the-ALDI-shelf brand. I think the cheese was "processed cheese food" as opposed to real cheese. Still, it was tasty. The onion rings were great. The service was prompt and friendly. Lunch (not incl tip) was $10.30, not bad. My true score would probably be a 3.5, in this case I rounded up.

It has quite the endearing exterior with the antique sign and the "warning" posted on the outside of the diner lets you know that the smashed hamburgers aren't going to be a quick option. The menu is simple and it's easy to make a decision. Vegetarians beware, even the "diet" plate has a hamburger on it! They are also known for their 32 ounce schooners of beer and the iced tea or lemonade served in bell jars. The hubs got the "schooner" and I got a bell jar of iced tea. It was a perfect compliment to the exceptionally juicy burger with perfectly melted american cheese and the crispy hand battered onion rings. What's most impressive is that yes, it's greasy fare but you don't feel like it's greasy until the meal is over and you're back at work. While you're eating it nothing is overly greasy or disgusting. It's tasty and leaves you with a full belly for around $12 a person including tip! The only negative is that they don't take credit cards so be prepared to pay cash and no kids means that it is one of the few smoking establishments still in Indianapolis.

Pretty good. Had the double cheeseburger with onion rings. Honestly, I wasn't enormously impressed. Sure it was good, but I wouldn't say it is worth going out of the way for. If you're in the neighborhood, it's definitely worth a visit. Mainly a daytime place fyi.

Saw a mouse scurring under the bar's glass blocks while we there, so of course we promptly left and called the health department. The food was good, until the mouse. Also I don't think they have put a dime in this place in twenty years and it really shows.

This place is just cool! Its a staple of the west side. Nice open concept, we sat at the bar and ate. Its a really nice and vintage, the cash register is super cool AND the food is good, good service. We got drinks fast and refills on iced water without asking. Talked with the owner! so you know its run well! Had cheeseburber and onion rings, so good!!!! Bring Cash!
(5)Scott H.
So so. It's a dive bar. Great specials on domestic beer. The burgers are alright, but they aren't worth the hype. If you aren't a regular, the customers and staff give you funny looks.

My boyfriend raves about this place so one lazy and a little hungover day we gave it a shot. Awesome. No wonder there are so many high end vehicles parked out front despite being in the middle of Haughville... this place is old school and awesome. The huge draft beers are insane and the burgers and chilli are even better. I love love love thin burgers and these are some of my very favorites in the world. It is like what Steak-n-Shake should be if it weren't fast food.

Maybe the burgers have been over hyped. But the overall experience makes Workingman's friend worth the trip. Horrible...rude servers...so rude I find it hilarious and inviting. If you don't have a strange sense of humor you may want to avoid. Their fries and onion rings rate=average to below average I'm not exactly over selling this place....I get that. What you may not be getting is an unmistakable ambiance....rich people trying to mingle with the working class....god, I'm doing a horrible job here Just go. Get a big beer in a frosted chalice and the double cheese burger with everything. Bring cash. And if you think your server is rude....you are correct...and she hates you. But on principle alone you should still tip 20%.

Amazing burgers n rings. Crispy edges of burger makes it perfect. I'd go there over n over. Well worth it. Bring cash!
(5)Jeremy B.
This a cash only place so remember to bring cash. The burger was supposed to be the best in Indy and unfortunately it was not

This place blew my mind when I was first taken there for a work lunch. I'm from Southern Indiana and I was used to little dive diners that served up greasy lunch and dinner options to satiate those unhealthy habits, but I had yet to find something comparable in the "Big City". This is it. I've only been here for lunch, so I can only speak to that. I usually always order the double cheeseburger, sweet tea (which is served in mason jars, just like at my grandma's house) and a side of fried mushrooms. The service is decent, but not spectacular, so expect to spend your entire lunch hour there. Also, they only take cash. It's off the beaten path on the west side of town in Haughville...down the street from the library and Judge's BBQ. Definitely a must-eat establishment.
(4)Myles H.
This is an average burger at an average price with average service. They don't have unlimited soft drinks (you buy a can of soda) or milkshakes, but they have plenty of beer. I'm not impressed with this place, but it is an average burger, so it gets an average score.

LOVE! Go here when you are having a crap day and wallow in the Working Man's unpretentiousness, its hole-in-the-wall decor, menu on the wall and cash-only simplicity. Fantastic (flat and not greasy) burgers, simple fries and the most basic (and sometimes reviled) beers (although, if you revile those beers, you likely are not in your element here). :) Cash only. Smoking is allowed. Service is fast and efficient - your order comes out right. The lunch clientel will surprise you - a lot of business folks who look overdressed but obviously come here often. This is a working man's Indiana establishment. Long live it!
(4)Bruce H.
I have eaten here several times and enjoy the flat burgers. The burgers are always fresh and hot. The wait staff is not the friendly type all business but very effective. The price is good for the quality of the sandwich. Will be back when I have a craving for a good burger.
(3)Aaron H.
Cheap, simple tavern with a nice cheeseburger. Good onion rings too. The burger is the thin, smashed, crispy, fried-in-its-own-fat style that I love. Just wish it was cooked a little less, as it's almost all crunch and little juice. Nothing is spectacular, but it's an above-average burger for less than you'd spend anywhere not fast-food. Cash only, but there are a couple options to stop at an ATM around.
(4)Brad W.
One of the best burgers I have ever had. When my wife and I went it was almost empty (right when they opened on a Saturday), so I started off a little concerned. However, the food made the concern melt away. This place has that dive bar feel to it, but I never feared for my safety like some places I have been to before. Good portion, good prices, I would certainly go back again.
(4)Aaron M.
A dbl cheeseburger and a coke from here always makes me smile. Just make sure you bring cash and a little extra time. Its gets packed during lunch. I have always been well taken care of here. I keep saying I'm going to try the tenderloin, chili or hot ham and cheese but the cheeseburger gets me everytime!
(5)richard d.
The ambiance may be lacking, but who eats ambiance anyway? This is a venerable eating place in a big room with a counter and tables scattered about. The double jalapeno cheeseburger is my usual choice--thin patties and great flavor. A can of Coke (I'd prefer a bottle, but take what they have) and fries and satisfaction is guaranteed.
(5)Anthony P.
Best burger in town? Depends how you like em but I can sure see why people love this place. I had a very delicious burger with O rings for a very reasonable price and I eagerly await my next visit there.
(5)Thu N.
Takes cash only. Their sweet tea is delicious. The burgers are almost like an upscale homemade steak and shake tasting burger. It is so greasy and bad for you, but it hits the spot everytime if you are craving diner food or just a yummy greasy burger, onion rings, and sweet tea. They also serve alcohol here. It sometimes gets full on the weekday lunch times. Many Lilly professionals go there since it is so close. Their service is slow but the food is worth it. The menu is very limited so don't come if you're not craving a burger. Hole in the wall and not really close to much else. It's in an old building and bathrooms and tables look dingy but the food is good!
(4)Jeremy R.
I liked my burger but I didn't think it was the best I'd eaten. They only take cash. While many reviewers said they had quite a wait, we got our food quickly when I visited, however it wasn't during peak lunch hours. Add jalapenos to the burger and skip the fries! And don't move the tables - they apparently have some system involved with the placement, so get used to feeling your neighbor's back while they breathe in and out.

Not their first rodeo, the Workingman's Friend has been around since the 1930s, and is still owned by the same family that built it back then. One of the best burgers in town (the ultra flat patties, as seen at Steak n Shake), gigantic cold draft beers (they have Bud and Bud Light, so you won't need to worry about making a decision), and a classic, nostalgic atmosphere, complete with jukebox, all add up to one of the most authentic experiences you can have at an American bar. The kitchen closes at 8pm, so you'll want to keep that in mind if you're looking to eat. They get a solid downtown lunch crowd, and you'd be surprised how many professionals frequent this otherwise-working-class establishment. They serve their beers in giant, frozen, glass mugs and they are cheap. On-site parking is plentiful, and it's fairly easy to find, though you'll want to map it online or on your PDA first. They also have a few cocktails to choose from, though I think it's a place to drink cold beer. But if you are feelin' a whiskey and coke, I ain't mad at ya!
(5)Hannah C.
I can only agree with previous reviewers. Very good burgers. The only downside? The heartburn! Everybody in my group got it. I had never even had heartburn before! So, thank you, The Workingman's Friend, for being my first. It was worth it. But... I'll space out my visits and take a Tums to save my esophagus.
(4)Chris M.
I don't make it here very often, but when I do its a friggin' treat. The vibe of this place is just too cool. Enjoying Workingman's is very simple. Bring cash. You won't need much as it's cheap. Order a cheeseburger, or a double, with some onion rings off the wall menu. Order a big ol' freezing cold schooner of whatever dometic beer they have and enjoy life.
(4)Joshua H.
Pretty good little joint. This place has some decent burgers, but I wouldnt call them the best. I ordered the regular Jumbo Burger and substituted onion rings for my side. It was thick and fairly big but I expected a lot more. Def should have gone with the big double cheeseburger which is what they are famous for to begin with. I liked the style of the place. Kind of country style diner you would see out in small town. The place is also a full service bar which leads me to believe that they are what they say they are: the workingman's friend. They told us that the place has been around for 90+yrs so obviously they've been a friend for a long time. This was apparent as the place doesnt look like it has changed much for some time. They even have the original cash register from the olden days. Honestly though, after a hard day of workin who wouldnt want a great burger and a stiff drink at the end of it all? This bar and grill will deliver you from all of your toil and hardship.
(4)Kelly J.
I like sitting down and receiving excellent service. The folks at the Workingman's Friend were SO POLITE! A little bit of small talk here and there made us feel right at home. The burgers (which they are known for) are delicious. Very similar to Steak N Shake. Must try the onion rings. I loved the old school ambiance - old cigarette dispensers, jukebox, 50s style tables and chairs, and a BIG old cash register. REMEMBER! Cash only, so be prepared.
(4)Lora C.
I'm a big fan. Their burgers are good, kind of like Steak 'n Shakes (the flattened kind). Onion rings and fries are awesome. Be advised that smoking is allowed so if that's something you don't want to be around, you probably don't want to go. Cash only so remember that. I haven't had any problems with the service. They're no-nonsense servers but they're efficient. Definitely not a place I would have checked out on a whim, but I had heard so much about it that I had to try it with co-workers one day and I wasn't disappointed. It's not in a pretty part of town nor is the restaurant pretty to look at, but the food is great. I enjoy having lunch there and seeing the business men in suits mingling with the blue collar workers who stop in. Definitely a fun experience.
(4)Patrick M.
You have to get a double. The burgers are flat and thin like Culvers Butter Burger. Take cash, no credit cards accepted. Get a Schooner of beer to wash it down. Been going there for 20 years. Highly recommend.
(4)TOMMY o.
they taste Steak&Shakeish but not as good & close early very friendly staff
(3)Trtman W.
Excellent burgers! Nice and crispy edges and if you get the double it is big! Kind of a divey place, and can get smokey in there. It's a bar but has a good lunch crowd, including plenty of cops, blue and white collar workers, and students fro IUPUI.
(4)Cathy D.
Working Man's Friend has been a favorite spot in Indy for years - and with good reason. The burgers are awesome - thin with crispy edges - the way Steak & Shake used to be. The place is a total dive, which just adds to the whole experience. It's a great place for lunch, but the area is a little iffy so I don't think I'd want to be there after dark.
(4)John D.
3 stars becuase this place is divey & unique. Could've been 4 if the bartender didn't doubt that I would be able to finish the enormous beer I ordered.
(3)Christine B.
The burgers are thin, like Steak n Shake's, but so juicy they must have a higher fat content than I want to think about. The double cheeseburger is seriously one of the best burgers I've had anywhere, and that includes In-And-Out. You can get two double cheeseburgers, two bottles of High Life, an order of onion rings to split, and listen to Seger and Cash on the jukebox for less than $20. It doesn't get much better than that. The only issue I have is that they close so early! For a bar, 8 pm is crazy early. Everyone knows burgers taste better the later at night it is! But with a bit of advance planning, it's well worth it. Unchanged much since the '50's, tons of character, and seriously juicy burgers.
(4)John E.
Best cheese burger in the world!
(5)Trevor T.
The cheeseburgers are, apparently, legendary. They are a thin, hot, steaming mass of ooozzzyyy goodness. This place is great if you're just dining by yourself or if you go in a crowd (as I did).
