Fast fairly friendly service... extra friendly on weekend mornings when Jean is on duty. She will make you feel at home. Decent food for a good price. If you're eating in, don't forget to tip your waitress, it is a restaurant even if it is fast food.

Super disappointed :( I thought Steak n Shame was supposed to be yummy? I was so looking forward to having the classic burger and milkshake but both were awful. I give this place two stars only because the servers were nice.

Dined 12/8/12 Clean, Dinner like design. There are 4 items on the $4 menu board: 1) Triple Burger, 2) Double Cheeseburger, 3) Single Bacon Cheeseburger, 4) Chicken tenders. I ordered the Bacon...Yum, Cheeseburger!!! The first thing I noted was that the meat is cooked on the flattop grill until there is a nice carmelization on the burger. The Bacon... Y U M, was just the way I liked it, chewy crispy and actually tasted like Bacon (Yummers), ya know salty smokey bacon flavor unlike some fast food places where they serve you rubber bacon strips. Usually McDonald's is the standard for shoestring fries, but Steak N Shake's fries are so thin that you could have slid them into the drinking straw. Everything was served on a real plate and delivered to my table. I usually only give fast food chain stores 3 stars unless something was done out of the ordinary... well as I was getting ready to leave, the waitress offered me a refill on my soda (called pop here), when I told her I needed to go she brought me a fresh soda in a TOGO cup....gratice / no charge. This location earned 4-stars in my book.

So this is similar to Denny's in Cali. Nothing special about it but hits the spot when you're hungry.

Arrived at about 10:30 pm, with one other car in the drive through. Service was terrible.. Took about 8 minutes to get our order in and 7 minutes to get the food and pay. Only ordered one grilled chicken sandwich. At least it was hot and tasted good! Just took too long.

Chili was AMAZING! Chili was AMAZING! Chili was AMAZING! You get my drift. I would come here again and again just for the chili. Obviously made fresh; not sweet; just great chili. Other items were good, but not extraordinary. Prices were excellent. Two meals with drinks and tip were under $15. Service was a little inconsistent that day - apparently they had four people quit all at once that day (one wonders why - some labor problem??) For burger/hot dog joints, one of the better ones. But, no sauerkraut for the dogs? Very surprising! Bun for the footlong dog was very plain and thin. The chili bumped it up to four stars.

This was my first experience at a steak and shake and I loved it! My only complaint is that they don't have any in California so I don't get their milkshakes everyday. The food was good but the milkshakes were pure heaven! Highly suggest all of the flavors but I think the half and half banana chocolate is my favorite. While writing this review, I am considering driving to Vegas just to get a shake! This is a must try place if you like ice cream.

Even more $4 meals to choose from. Our "go to" location is in Avon, IN. It's always busy, but the staff excels to get your meals out in record time. I am a fan of the chili 5 way, double steak burger, and their seasonal shake combinations.
