India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. My first trip to an all Vegan/Veggie place. (I was scared.) BUT..all red meat aside--this place was AMAZING. The Naan. OMG. Garlicy and perfect. The buffet was clean, hot and full of yummy options. The owner helped when It came to identifying different dishes and brought out lots of different sauce (because it's all about the dips) So accommodating and helpful. I honestly felt like I was walking into a different country being there. So glad I kept my inner carnivore quiet and tried this amazing little Gem on my westside.

This is where I first fell in love with Indian cuisine. Their lunch buffet is not only very reasonably priced, but is a comprehensive tour of many different dishes. Their menu is vegetarian and many dishes are also vegan. They brought us fresh naan and chai tea was available and included in the buffet. I loved trying out many sweet treats as well. There is a market located behind the restaurant with an accessory store located in it that has beautiful scarves and earrings, too!

This place is hidden gem! The food was amazing and I am very impressed with their service. They smiled through a very busy long weekend dinner time. The rasam was authentic and the variety of food left us stuffed. We tried a little bit of everything and everything was tasty and fresh. They made dosa per request and the food arrived quickly. All in all a great place to eat! So good we hope they open up a place in the Chicagoland area!!

You would not expect to find such tasty food inside a strip mall in a less-upscale part of town, but this is a little gem. Very friendly staff who were happy to tell me all about each dish (after I asked) - ingredients, spice level, where it is from (like which part of India- or on the first night I went, if they were more Chinese-influenced etc.). Apparently on different days they have different buffets. Friday was supposedly more spicy than usual but I don't really like very hot-spicy and most of the dishes were fine- although they were quick to note they woudl be happy to whip up something fabulous for me very quickly if I found the majority of the dishes too spicy. Have not tried the vegan nights yet (Thursday) but on all the other nights, all the food is vegetarian, not vegan - didn't even tell my non-vegetarian husband this, and he was still very satisfied with the food - I don't think he realized until we were about finished with the meal that he'd had a veggie meal! There was a little less variety on the buffet than I expected, but I still came away very satisfied. Naan, chai tea, and delicious desserts included with the buffet. Very acceptable price- I have since called and ordered take-out and not been disappointed. Over the phone the staff were not shy in helping me when I was indecisive, asking me what qualities I liked and telling me which dishes they preferred and why (even if they were the less expensive of the two I could not decide between). Note that the restaurant is located kind of inside another store, which contains a large Indian grocery (also quite fun to peruse). Parking is ample. Atmosphere is quiet enough to carry conversation. For dessert, I suggest the rice dish if they have it out. It's my favorite. They also have fried dough balls in a syrup. Usually I really like these but at this location they were extremely buttery- still really good, but so rich I could not eat more than 2. Also in case it matters to you, I don't think they have alcoholic beverages (or maybe I just did not see them on the menu) but you'll be too busy enjoying the tea anyway. My next trip will probably be on a Saturday - I have been told this is the day that the employees cook the dishes that are from the area to which they are native, so I look forward to tasting (and hearing about) these dishes. The staff are very polite -I enjoy asking a ton of questions to learn more about their dishes and etc, and they are happy to tell me! When dining in, I have never ever felt rushed, which is nice. If you want good Indian food, or a wonderful variety of vegetarian options, you've found your place. The folks here genuinely enjoy sharing their food and chatting in detail about the food (if you're so inclined). I am so happy to have found this place. Hospitality, taste, and price is a winning combo hands-down, even if the variety is a wee bit less than what I expected on the Thursday night buffet. Husband and I had a delicious date night for appx $20 (plus ample tip)- can't beat that. This is my go-to restaurant now.

Very nice food. Great service too. Mango lassi- 4/5 Gobi 65 - 3.5/5 Dahi puri - 4.5/5 Uthapam -4.5/5 Sambhar -4/5 Spice nation thali- 4.5/5 Veg chetinad - 3.5/5 Garlic naan- 5/5 Chilli naan -4.5/5 Overall great experience, looking forward for buffet nights between Thursday and Sunday.

Went for the Thursday night vegan buffet because I had heard great things about it. It was pretty good, but not the life-changing experience (I happen to enjoy my place at the top of the food chain) people had been telling about. The buffet was smaller than usual (according to my friend who is a regular there) on this night, and that may have been because of the small crowd (there were only about 4 or 5 parties of 2). The food tasted pretty good, but was very similar and had the same mushy consistency (the lack of turnover probably didn't help in that regard). It was also very hot in the dining room so that may have suppressed my appetite for spicy Indian food. The price is right and the food was OK. It's something (the vegan buffet) I could do every now and then, but I wouldn't make it a regular occurrence. Next time I think I'll just order from the menu to have a little more variety of flavor and texture.

Exemplary hospitality & delicious food. A lively crowd enjoyed tonight's Sunday Evening buffet, with a great vibe among the mix of families and hipster couples. SpiceNation is located in a small strip mall that features a cluster of Indian businesses, including another restaurant. Look for the SpiceNation sign. You'll think you're lost when you enter the door to a corridor... Keep going, and you'll find a homey, well-appointed restaurant with an attentive and gracious staff. Well worth your trek to the west side!

A good friend of mine wanted to try Indian food and Spice Nation was the first restaurant to pop into my head. This is one of the best Indian food restaurants I've ever been too. She was shocked when she saw the sign that it was a vegan/vegetarian restaurant and was very skeptical if she would enjoy it or not. I was thrilled when she expressed how wonderful the food was. Thank you Spice Nation for pleasing my meat lover friend's palate!
(5)Divya V.
Super disappointed with the lunch buffet. I don't venture out much with an infant and if I do it's usually within a 15 min drive home. I really wanted to take my dad who is a vegetarian to try this buffet out. It was such a waste of a trip. The South Indian food was sub par - sambar, idly, dosa was ok and rasam was decent. The samosa chat was good. Ragda patties was average and all the vegetable dishes were OK. They had a weird combo of vegetables kidney beans with okra and green peppers umm ok not a dish to be made in any Indian kitchen at home! I'm all for experimenting but this combo is a fail! The dessert was decent - good gulab jamun, gajar halwa was ok. My dad enquired if the chai has sugar in it. After one sip he said - no sugar and no tea leaves either. It was like hot flavored brown color milk. Probably not going to come back anytime soon.

My first foray into a Vegan buffet and I absolutely loved it. I meet with a vegan Meetup group here monthly. If you eat meat, don't be deterred, because there are so many flavorful options. The Naan is to die for, I've never had better! The chai tea is pretty darn amazing as well. Give it a shot, you won't be sorry. Very clean environment and friendly staff.

I've been to Spice Nation a couple times for lunch with some work friends. It is awesome! It's a vegetarian/vegan buffet, and the food is always good. Nice variety, too! When four of us went the other day, we were asked right off the bat if any of us would be sticking to the vegan options. We all were, and the waiter walked us through the buffet to make sure we knew which dishes were vegan. He even brought us special vegan chai and a delicious almond milk dessert. That's service! The lunch buffet is a very reasonable price. Love this place so much!
(4)Aninda S.
Had a sub par experience. Went to have dinner with a friend. As we were being seated we were asked whether we'd like the naan or dosa. We were rather flummoxed and upon inquiry learnt that they were having a DINNER BUFFET - no Ala Carte (sad)!! After some initial confusion whether we would be served only one dosa per person or some naan as well we anyway sat down to eat. There were very few choices for indian vegeterian food - note there were still about 10 options but that is quiet low for an indian buffet. The food was cold and we speculated if they just had too much left over from the lunch buffet!! The taste of food were good which is why this gets 2 star. The service was sloppy and the waiter had to be called out to provide an extra naan. The deserts were highly diluted versions of rice pudding and fruit custard. I would strongly advise to stay away from it. We had thought after learning about the dinner buffet and looking at the food quality whether we should just go across the road to India Sizzling. In retrospect we should have put our thoughts to action! BIG THUMBS DOWN! Don't get taken in my 5 star reviews from non-Indians opining about Indian food, this is the worst I have ever had in US across 5 states and 8 years.
(2)Prashanth R.
Excellent food and service. Been there twice. Once for lunch and other time for dinner. Highly recommend this place for some yummy authentic indian vegetarian food. I am in Bloomington and will definitely visit the next time I go to the city.
(5)Sareen L.
Exceptional customer service. The host guided us through the menu and pairing options, which was super helpful. All the dishes had great flavor and traditional Indian spices. Chia tea and unlimited naan were a plus! We heard they have extra spicy options on Fridays and all-vegan Thursday suppers.
(4)Amy V.
Beware: Buffet dinner only. No ala-carte. We went on a Friday night and we're expecting to order some of our fave Indian dishes but were told it was buffet only. This was disappointing but we still had an overall good experience. So I am a vegetarian, and my boyfriend is not. We both loved the buffet although the choices were close to slim. Theres only about 10 items to choose from - none of which contained meat so he was a little bummed. However, the food was delicious and the price was reasonable. Our service was slow but we would probably return on a day that offer something besides buffet. Pros: Taste/ Vegetarian options Cons: Buffet only/ poor service

I've been out of the Indy food scene lately, but to no exception Spice Nation was a real lunch treat. Yes, I'm literally in carb coma lying on the couch at home as I write this. Mind you...I loaded up on 2 1/2 delicious plates from the buffet, dosa & garlic naan, a sampling of every single dessert, and a cup of lovely chai to wash it down. Normally I don't like chai, but this was an exception - no overpowering aromas. I sampled a bit of everything and I liked that there was a mingle of different textures and flavors. Coconutty, spicy, savory, rich, crunchy, creamy. Even a grid of plastic and brown paper bag scrap that must've dropped in while they were whipping it together - I'll let it pass since the food is quite delish. I wish I could give you a more accurate description of what I devoured, but I'll let pictures tell the tale only because I'm completely illiterate on this new vegetarian Indian adventure. I'll definitely return in the near future to become more educated on these wonderful selections!

Good food, Great service and vegan friendly. Hope to come back here whenever we are in town!
(5)Ata A.
The best Indian vegetarian buffet in Indy (and arguably in the midwest, that's a dig at Devon ave in chicago). Their veg biryani has no comparison. Chai Chai Chai, desserts, veg curries and soups, and dosa. What else could anyone possibly ask for. My family's favorite!
(5)Angie L.
The food is great, not extraordinary but definitely great Indian. What puts this place over the top for me? Hands down, the best customer service I've experienced at any restaurant in Indianapolis!
(5)Fakke N.
This place is the best. I had been curious about Spice Nation for a while, but had not tried it until a couple months ago because my husband thinks he can't survive without eating meat every day. My brothers vegan girlfriend came to visit, so I figured I finally had my chance. The guy asked if we were vegan and immediately brought out every vegan thing they had for my brothers lady. She was so impressed she wanted to go back before she left. The guy remembered us and brought out all the vegan food for her again. Spice Nation is now my husbands favorite restaurant!!
(5)Joanna B.
When someone mentions they want Indian food my brain goes straight to this place. Nothing compares. They buffet is always changing but they always keep a few delicious regulars. Now I am sure you have read through a few of the other reviews and have noticed that this is a completely vegetarian restaruant and you are asking yourself "How can I get through a whole meal without meat?" Trust me, you will not miss the meat! Everything is delicious and very filling and you cannot beat the price!
(5)Sky L.
Ate here once when was old owners. -1star Came back under new management. These guys are THE BEST! They are very friendly and accommodating. Once saag paneer wasn't on the buffet and he offered to make it for me (big smiles) it gets no better than that. The food is sooooooooooo good!

Indianapolis is beginning to stand out as a city that has wonderful Indian restaurants. Spice Nation, one of the city's newer additions, certainly serves that reputation well. I first heard of the restaurant when they hosted a Yelp Elite event that I was not able to attend. While I eat at Spice Nation's neighboring Indian restaurants several times per month, I simply seemed to ignore it. Ignorance isn't always bliss. I may have subconsciously avoided Spice Nation because they do not serve meat. I'm the quintessential omnivore. I like meat; I like vegetables, and I especially like a mixture of the two. Spice Nation is a vegetarian establishment with a large selection of vegan options. I thought that I would be dissatisfied with a meatless meal; I was worried that I would be craving protein, and I figured that I would still be hungry once I finished eating. Wrong, wrong, and wrong. The buffet at Spice Nation is plentiful, and there was certainly no shortage of food. My worries about not being full? Nixed. Sure, there isn't any meat, but there are plenty of protein-packed lentils, chickpeas, and paneer. Another worry abrogated. At the end of my meal, I was sinfully stuffed. Spice Nation is a buffet with an interesting twist: they change their daily offerings based on different Indian themes. On my visit, I sampled Southern Indian dishes. However, the night previous to my visit, the restaurant featured Indochinese cuisine. The night following my visit was an Indian street-food theme. With this kind of variety, one could eat at this restaurant daily--and their wallets wouldn't suffer. Spice Nation is very reasonably priced. I adored nearly everything I tasted at Spice Nation. However, although simple, the cabbage and mixed vegetable poriyal was my favorite. It was light, full of taste, and quite healthy. The channa saag was excellent and was properly spiced. Once of my other favorite dishes was the pongal, which is a mixture of lentils and rice. It looks like mashed potatoes, but tastes even better. The garlic naan and the dosa that arrive freshly prepared on your table were phenomenal! Don't be a wuss. Order the dosa Indian hot. When dining at Spice Nation, be sure to save room for dessert; there is plenty of it. My personal favorites were the mohantaag and the rice kheer. As a big fan of these desserts, I declare that Spice Nation's versions are the best that I have yet to try. The service at Spice Nation was fantastic. We were seated immediately, and had two waiters who catered to our every need. I was also pleased that the staff was enthusiastic about explaining the menu and the methods their chefs use in preparing the food. Well done, Spice Nation. Very, very, very well done.
(5)Ayla W.
I like the restaurant. It's not the best I've ever had... However it's ok. When trying to find it, it seems strange because it's a little strip mall inside.
(3)Rebekah P.
Great price for great food. I lived in South India for a year, so eating here brought back good memories. Pros-good dosas, chat bar, and good entrees in the buffet.. Cons-Idyls were a little dense and the tea was weak. I expected sweet milky coffee from a South Indian place.
(5)Johnny L.
Thanks for the directions. Its straight forward as they are at the end of the hallway on the right Once i got over the language issue as the waitress doesn't seem to speak much english the rest was easy A Thali platter which came with rice, 3 curries, potatoes, chana masala, and a litlle Gulab Jalum ball for dessert and your choice of naan, roti r chapata bread $10 I also had the spicy cauliflower appetizer $4 A Mango lassi is a must to tame the heat $3 It was a delicious meal. I would have expected the potatoes to have been more crispier Service was a bit odd, as those who came after me got their Thali's before I did. After the third table got served, I was like WTF , have I been forgotten? So great food but they need to be more attentive to service. The Chef Hintin has been cooking Indian food in restaurants for over 15 years so he knows how to run a restaurant. I would look to come back to try the buffet. From what I understand this may be the only Indian vegetarian restaurant in INDY

I used to go to this restaurant for lunch once a week or once every 2 weeks as it's pretty close to my office. The food was always amazing and the service was just as good. However, something has changed. I went for carryout back in...mid-October, I believe. Whenever I get Indian carry-out I order the Palak Paneer or Saag Paneer...creamy spicy spinach with cubes of cheese in it. The staff was being weird. I ordered and he said "Palak paneer is chickpeas...are you sure that's what you want?" Well, palak paneer is NOT chickpeas. Chickpeas are channa. He made me order my food in English "Spinach with cheese cubes" and then said, "Ooooooh. I didn't think you really wanted chickpeas. Do you want naan?" I said I didn't. "Are you sure? Naan is bread. Everyone wants bread." No...I do not want bread. So weird! I brought the food back to the house, it smelled fantastic, and opened the container. What I had was unlike ANY palak/saag paneer I've ever seen: Thin dark green sauce, about the consistency of water, with about a dozen clear squares of onion floating on top. When I stirred it, the cheese cubes came up from the bottom. There was no spinach! I've eaten this dish, from this restaurant, probably close to 2 dozen times. It has never, ever looked like this. Usually I can eat it from the box, with a fork, and skip the rice if I want to. This was seriously like spicy spinach-flavored water. I was so hungry and was like SAD that I was going to be eating rice and cheese cubes without any creamy yummy spinach...and that I'd paid $10 for this! I went back to the buffet one more time after the carry-out fiasco and found the options lacking and the food not quite where it should have been temperature-wise. The chutneys were also thin and watery on this visit, the tea was out the entire time, and I never received my dosa. Hopefully these 2 experiences were anomalies and they get back on the ball soon.
(4)Brittany S.
As I sit here thinking about the Spice Nation lunch I am about to eat in the next hour, I felt I must remind you how much I adore this place. 5 Reasons that stand out today regarding my SN adoration: -coconut rice: be it on the buffet or not - order it. -unlimited chai -friendly staff -hot and fresh galub jamon -little corn fried and spiced as an appetizer (must try!)
(5)David P.
Amazing amazing. All the naan (3kinds) and dosa (like 6 kinds) you can eat with buffet. And they make fresh for your table. They ask if your vegan when you sit down. Buffet was great about 15 entrees. 4 desserts all great. Liked better than Devon street.
(5)Chad B.
As a lover of Indian food I thought I had the local go to best in Indy location until I tried Spice Nation. They have completely ruined not just other Indian restaurants but basically all dining experiences I have ever enjoyed. From the menu options to the buffet choices, you can't go wrong. They have the best samosas I have ever put in my mouth, and there have been quite a number of them in my past but from here on out I don't see any being able to compare. Even with everything being vegetarian and myself being a proud eater of animals of all types, I truly don't miss the meat at all. The staff are amazing and by far the best service I have ever had while dining out in Indy or any place for that matter. I have never had a place offer to make me something that was not being offered on the menu let alone not even take the money for such item because they just wanted to make sure they made my meal the best experience they could. Truly the creme DE LA creme of dinning experiences in the indy area.
(5)Andy S.
This place is awesome. I LOVE meat and i did not miss it during this lunch. Unlike other Indian lunch buffets I've been to, the dishes aren't "dumbed down" for mass consumption. Plenty of spice, which was great. Naan is made to order and was really good. There's nothing better on a cold day than sipping on some chai regretting how much I just ate :)
(5)Shoshana K.
The music selection is particularly over bearing this evening....the restaurant was 98% empty of dining in customers (some people were stopping by for carry out). However for those of us choosing to indulge in our dinners in-house, the music was too loud and annoying. If no one is in the restaurant, blast whatever the heck you want! Otherwise, it would be prudent to be more sensitive to your diverse customer's ear drums and tastes in music and play something less bollywood club-o-phonic decibel pumping tunes..... The food took FOR EVER to get to our table. There were only two other tables in the restaurant w/customers dining in while we were there so I don't know what they were doing back there in the kitchen! Once the food came out it was delicious, freshly made, and perfect. It seemed the items we chose had been prepared when we ordered them and not fished out of a vat of previously made food for a large buffet crowd. Don't get me wrong - the first time we tried this place out we had their buffet (on "indian street food night; Sunday) and it was fabulous! So, it was comforting to taste that the dishes we picked this evening seemed to be made when we picked them and not prior.... The mango lassi is great. Prices are reasonable; for two (and one of the two of us is a bottomless pit...) we ordered stuffed naan (onion), paneer tikka, and aloo gobi. We cleaned the platters and were stuffed. Had we ordered anything else we would have taken a doggy bag with us (not such a bad thing, but just pointing out that three items fed us plenty). It was less than $30 w/tip - score!

Oh Spice Nation, how I adore you. This entirely vegetarian Indian restaurant is hidden away near Lafayette Square and has the BEST buffet I've ever experienced. Indian food in general is quite vegetarian-friendly, but Spice Nation takes amazing vegetarian cuisine to a whole new level. There is always something new and delicious and their Chai tea (which is included in the buffet price, along with unlimited naan and dosas) is to die for. I've never felt the need to order off the menu simply because the buffet is so bountiful and delicious. Other perks: plenty of parking, great service, and there is a lovely Indian market in the same building that sells basmati rice in bulk, spices, and a mix of other eclectic items.
(5)Krista R.
Definitely a refreshing take on Indian food for Indy, and lunch buffet with unlimited chai is a steal at $6.99. Temperature of buffet items should have been a bit hotter, spice levels for many foods could have been increased, and amount of fried items seemed exorbitant... But nonetheless we enjoyed our lunch a lot! Spice Nation specializes in South Indian vegetarian foods, mostly featuring Tamilian foods. (The cooks are from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu). Foods we sampled in the lunch buffet and also brought to table upon request included oothappam, chapatti, idly, dosa, rice, dal tadka, rasam, sambhar, eggplant curry, kidney bean and chickpea curry, vada, pickles, various chutneys, curd, mushroom manchurian, vegetable korma, bitter gourd curry, vegetable fried rice, and naan. The server said the lunch buffet changes daily. Some vegetarian items I would have loved to see included on the buffet: papads, more dosas, samosas, parotas, poori, a paneer dish or 2, a bhindi/okra curry, mango lassi. Also, I'd love to see some Indian foods from other southern regions!! Keralan vegetarian options, Goan vegetarian foods and some Chettinad vegetarian choices would be tasty. Spice Nation you can do it!! The server told us that the Friday night dinner buffet has more South Indian foods, Saturday night they do Indo-Chinese foods (gobi and mushroom manchurian, etc), and Sunday they feature chaats (snacks) like bhel puri, panni puri, etc. Service was great - we asked if we could skip naan and get chapati instead and the server went to check. Recommend SN for those who seek vegetarian and vegan Indian food not generally found in Indy's India Garden/Shalimar type restaurants.

Excellent buffet in a little cluster of subcontinental businesses in Indian-apolis. All veg, and the vegan items are labeled as such. I also appreciated the abundance of nonstandard dishes available, though they did have a few favorites up there. Will go again.
(5)Anshuman B.
Lunch buffet was mediocre at most. Medu vada was too fried. Idli was like a rubber. There was more of water and less chutney in the chutney. Plates were so small that it would not fit more than 2 items. Spoons and forks were taken every time we got up to get food. Palak paneer had too much butter in it. Some of the good things were sambhar, onion pakodas. Dosa was okay. Nothing special about it. Gulab jamun was okay too. Honestly I had higher expectations after seeing 5 stars from others but I was disappointed. Bloomington has better Indian food than this.

Favorite favorite favorite. This is far and away our favorite spot to grab lunch during the week. It's tucked away in a strip mall and can easily be confused with the Indian restaurant next door. They both have signs sitting out on the sidewalk. It can also be confusing because you don't walk directly into the restaurant. You go in the front door, down a hallway, past a salon (??? I've never really paid attention, but I'm pretty sure that's what is there), and almost into a small grocery store before you get to Spice Nation's entrance. The price is great (for lunch OR dinner) and the food is awesome. It's all vegetarian, with some vegan options. There are always a variety of spice levels, which is nice. Different days feature different regional cuisines. Neither my husband nor I are vegetarian, but we both LOVE this place and never walk away feeling dissatisfied. The service here is excellent, friendly and prompt. Make sure you get the tea while you're there.
(5)Lacey U.
Come for the lunch buffet. It's worth it! This is probably the best Indian Food I've found in Indiana. It's completely vegetarian which is what I usually prefer when eating Indian food. The dishes were spiced perfectly! I like a little bit of heat and the few of them were spiced as such but it wasn't too much that I couldn't enjoy the spices. There were several dishes and each one was completely different than the next. The service was great, they were prompt and kept my water glass full and the table clear of dishes. I usually shy away from buffets because the food is always sitting and gets that weird shine on the top - NOT HERE. They were very attentive to the dishes and were kept fresh. This is definitely worth every penny and I can't wait to go back! Check out the grocery next door as well!
(5)Little R.
Went to this place based on the highly positive reviews-- big mistake! My husband and I love Indian food but this is the worst we have had. First of all, we asked for the menu instead of having the buffet, the owner insisted that we have the buffet--weird. We stayed despite the uncomfortable feeling. The food in the buffet is NOT FRESH at all, almost like they were about to go bad and then were made into deep dried stuff and curry. Two dishes we had (deep fried potatoes and cauliflowers) were COLD. We decided to leave immediately and go to another place. Although we barely ate anything, not to mention having any service at all, the manager charged us the full fare and automatically added a high percentage of tip. If it is an option, I would give NO STAR based on the very poor food quality, unreasonable price for this kind of food, and bad service.
(1)Michelle Q.
A bit of a hidden location but worth the search. Delicious vegan dishes and really enjoyed sharing the small dish options. Everything tasted amazing and arrived hot and fresh. We were at dinner so no buffet recommendation but I have heard several good things about their lunch. Server was extremely nice, and patient with our questions. Enjoyed the friendly service. I agree I am not a vegan but the flavors and dishes are prepared excellently. I didn't miss the meat in our dish.
(4)Wanda M.
Spice Nation is a fabulous restaurant where you're greeted like family and they confirm immediately if you have any dietary needs and if your vegan or vegetarian to help direct you though the buffet. Seriously, if you've never been GO! Try it even, no ESPECIALLY, if you don't care for Indian food. I've taken several here who didn't care for Indian and now they are taking other friends here since it's so tasty and reasonably priced. Lunch is a buffet and it's CLEAN, hot, wonderful variety of appetizers, entrees, fruit, salad and desserts. Chai Tea (self-serve, free refills) is included in price of buffet along with made to order Naan and Dosa. The Garlic naan is my favorite but the dosa is good. I just had to decide which I preferred and not have both delivered to our table. No sense in being wasteful. It's easy to be a vegan or vegetarian without even trying here especially if you're trying to go meatless for one day a week. You want miss the meat here. I love the wonderful spices mixed throughout the gravies. The Gobi Manchurian gravy (vegan) is the spicy on the buffet (M-Thurs.) and I topped off my tomato rice with it. I also enjoyed the aloo madras (potatoes), mix veg and cabbage poriyap (Vegan), and my favorite of the day was the appetizer onion & spinach bonds (vegan). So good!! The cantaloupe shouted my name for dessert so I hit the fruit with more chai tea.

If I could eat like this every day, I could go vegan without any problems! Everything is so fresh, so flavorful, and so good for you (right?)!

Just want to echo all the great reviews for Spice Nation. Went there for the first time and had a great experience. I tried most of the buffet selections and the food was spicy, but not hot. The curry had the right level of heat without being overwhelming. They had these fried dough rings and sourdough patties, and you are supposed to eat them by dipping them in a variety of sauces. The fried veggie and samosas were golden, but not too greasy A variety of naans was included and served tableside. The one w/ the sweet potato filling was quite hearty and fulfilling. Indian desserts tend to be too sweet for me. Try the mango pudding if you want something less sweet. Chai tea is included w/ the buffet. The location is slightly out of the way for lunch, but definitely worth the visit. Lunch is slightly cheaper during the week ($6.95 Tuesdays-Thursdays, $7.99 on Fridays).

Spice Nation graciously opened their doors to us Yelpers for a special dinner buffet and helped me understand why they have so many 5 star reviews. The food is wonderful. Everything tasted fresh, smelled amazing, and was bursting with flavor. I can't wait to go back, especially since I hear they actually mix up their buffet options instead of offering the same dishes every time. This is a Vegetarian restaurant, but meat lovers don't be deterred, you will not be disappointed. The variety of tastes and textures will have you asking, "Meat, who?"

Best Indian food in the Indianapolis area... The owner was soooo helpful and even though we know our way around Indian food, he was still able to inform us further. We went on a Thursday for lunch - Vegan and Vegetarian Buffet. Everything I tried was delicious. There was actually SPICE in the food...some heat. Indian buffets tend to be a bit bland and mild. Not the case here. The naan was solid and they have all kinds of sauces. The mint sauce has more jalapeño than most and I must say...I couldn't have been happier. Some of the best Paneer Tikka that I've ever had. There are several themed Buffet nights so you might check to ensure they will have what you want. For example: Thursday night is strictly Vegan. Amazing attentive service and incredible food. I will be adding this to my regular lunch routine. YAY!!!! The ONLY negative I will give Spice Nation is that they do not have iced tea. I won't even dock them for this though...I will gladly drink a Diet Coke for the tasty grub they are serving up!! GO! GO! GO!!!!

Go, Now. The end.

Tons of vegan options, all vegetarian, buffet, full dishes, weirdly themed pop music, this place has everything. I'm not much of an indian food fan (just never like the taste of curry) but even someone picky like me has PLENTY of options here. The only real con I found was the bathroom. They are technically part of the main building, not the restaurant so i'm not sure if they have any control over them. Going to the bathroom feels like slipping into a wormhole and popping out somewhere in an old beaten up part of russia.

Great service and really tasty food! My mother accidentally left her cell phone there and they called me to let me know that they had it and to come in and get it! Great place to have lunch!
(5)Sarah C.
Overall, fantastic. This was literally like the second or third time I had had Indian food in my life, and I was impressed. Don't be mislead by the small sign on the building and the long hall you must walk down in order to reach the actual restaurant. You'll find it, I promise. It was actually a pretty nice room and the staff was very nice. We got there pretty late in the evening, but our waiter was still very catering and, due to him being the only one serving, was very apologetic about our wait. For what I ordered, I received a TON of food. I literally could not eat it all and was happy that I was able to bring some home with me. My meal consisted of naan, rajma masala and some type of donut dessert. So, so good. As I said, this totally and completely filled me up and was decently priced. I'll be returning!

So, so very good. Like others, I'm a carnivore. But Spice nation does the veggies up right. We intended to go do the dinner buffet as a family but the littlest carnivore got a little cranky so we opted to do carry out. We ordered the Paneer Chatinad and the Palak Paneer with extra rice and naan. The kids typically just eat the rice and naan (and I provide them with a fruit or vegetable...I'm not a moron). My husband and I typically have leftovers for lunch the next day. Not today. Everything was really delicious! Perfectly spiced and rich. I CAN NOT wait to come in for a weekend buffet. Also, the prices...extremely reasonable. My new fave!
(5)Tara F.
What a cozy little nook of an Indian restaurant! It was DELICIOUS! I was thoroughly amazed at the decor and the food. Oh dear baby Jesus the food! If I was a cow with four stomachs, I would've filled each and every one of them. You have delicious, vegetarian and vegan friendly dishes, and each and every one of them was delightful. Now, I am a born and bred meat eater, but it didn't phase me that every dish was vegan...in fact I thoroughly enjoyed it! And the staff was extremely helpful by offering suggestions about good combinations and my level of spice tolerance. (*watch out for those spicy peppers...They have a kick like David Beckham.) Spice Nation is located in Speedway near India Buffet and Banquet Hall, a much larger and less enjoyable establishment because they haven't made me such a new-found lover of Indian food. I'll definitely be going back! :)
(5)Jimmy R.
Great vegetarian buffet, I live in Irvington but make the drive to the west side because this place rules.
(4)Brittany B.
My husband and I have struggled to find decent, non-chain, quick food options near the highway on our frequent trips between Chicago and Columbus. This was less than 5 minutes from I-65 and the buffet was a really speedy sit-down dinner option. Tons of vegetarian and vegan options, including tangy green chutney and savory lentil-cilantro soup. I also really liked the fresh spinach pakora, which was very light and not at all greasy.
(5)Sal K.
I reviewed A Passage to India prematurely, as I had forgotten it had been under a new name: Spice Nation, the review still stands: Arguably the best Indian restaurant in Indianapolis. It is vegetarian south Indian cuisine that always satisfies. Buffet or off the menu, you can't go wrong. If my mother (from india) approves; then it must be good!!!
(5)Sarah F.
New favorite lunch spot! After reading the reviews from other Yelpers I've come to trust, I knew I had to try this place. And it did NOT disappoint. Love love loved the Indian lunch buffet at Spice Nation so much. I dragged along a meat-loving friend who almost lobbied for another lunch spot when she discovered it was vegetarian and vegan only. I pressed her to give it a shot, adding that I'd buy her a burger afterward if she wasn't satisfied. She loved it so much and didn't miss the meat at all. Victory! The paneer masala, biriyani, garlic naan, chickpeas, fried aloo, and self-serve chai were all wonderful. And for $7.99 on Fridays ($6.99 Mon-Thurs), you cannot beat the price!
(5)KJ M.
VEGAN REVIEW Mmmmmmmm. What a fantastic place: lovely staff, charming patrons, and a delightful and clearly-vegan-marked buffet. There were two (two!) desserts, even, and so many fried things I jumped up and down in delight with my first plate in hand. Seriously, there are so few veg-friendly places where you have to go scout out all the vegan offerings BEFORE you fill your plate that I darn near wept. We drove up from Bloomington and will definitely do so again!
(5)Dylan E.
I'm not one to seek out vegetarian or vegan food, and in fact, it's usually quite the opposite approach that I tend to take. However, Spice Nation has managed to work itself into the spot as the one of a very few outliers in that trend. The lunch buffet is hard to beat anywhere for both taste and value. Along with the 12 or so items on the buffet, there is always plenty of naan and dosas on your table. The lunch buffet covers quite a wide variety of options, and you can find plenty of both spicy and non-spicy options. The dishes have a lot of different flavors, so make sure you leave room for a little bit of everything because you will want to try it all. If you still have room for dessert, there are even some options available on the buffet for that. Aside from bringing the delicious flavors of authentic Indian food to Indy, this is one place that I don't miss having some kind of dead animal on my plate, which is not an easy task to accomplish. I have been 4 or 5 times, but have somehow managed to pick days when they have the same buffet out. It does change on different days of the week and I need to better plan it out to try their other offerings. As far as the building goes, it's located in strip mall and you have to walk down a hallway, past some type of hair place, and turn before you get to the market that you are heading towards. It seems like an odd way to get there, but the restaurant itself is in its own room and remains quiet even with the traffic outside for the other locations and is cut off from everything else so you don't feel like you are in a strip mall setting. It's very clean inside and it certainly looks nicer than most lunch buffet type places. The service is always fantastic, and is what bumped this up to a 5 star for me. The owners are genuinely excited to be able to share their food and culture with everyone who comes in. I would make a suggestion on what to try, but aside from not actually remembering what anything was called, I wouldn't want to get you set on any one item. Try everything and be prepared to have eaten way too much afterwards. It's the best Indian food I've had anywhere.
(5)Sarine J.
This place is just fabulous! The buffet was fantastic. The service was not great but I ate there about 4 months ago.
(4)Shuchi R.
We stopped by this place on our way to Chicago. Amazing Sunday dinner buffet! So many varieties to choose from and all of them were awesome !!
(5)Beth C.
What to say that hasn't already been said...? I had never had Indian food before but had Spice Nation at the top of my list of places to try. Glad I finally found myself there! I honestly have no idea what any of the items I consumed were but I do know all but one were taste sensations in my mouth. Not sure what that green pile of weirdness is? Try it! It's likely delicious! The only thing I couldn't stomach? Cheese balls in a sugar syrup. Seriously... what the heck? I nearly gagged. They reminded me of a soggy pancake that didn't get cooked all the way and was still gooey in the center. Yikes. The chai tea? Excellent. Service was friendly but we did have to ask for water refills two times. No biggie but important for a person like me who was eating those cheese balls...

I wanted to review this just because it is deserving. However, if you look through the other reviews, I think it is clear Indianapolis loves Spice Nation. I will leave out the attempts to create a flowing format and just get down to it. Food - perfect. I mean it. I eat A LOT of Indian food. They run the table. I haven't had a dish there where I don't say "this is the best _____ I have had". They just kill it. Service - There is total dedication to the customer. Glasses never go empty. The dining room is always clean. They will go the distance to make sure your needs and desires are met. You can feel it is a sense of duty and done with great desire. You never feel like a burden and you can feel how glad they are you are there. Buffet - I don't eat a lot of buffets. But, they just do so much well it makes my life easier. I don't have to pick. And, I like taking first timers to the buffet so they can establish a foundation with either the genre or the restaurant itself. Every Thursday is an entirely vegan buffet. This event is attended by more non-vegans than vegans. So many favorites are on the buffet, people get excited about it. Environment - what I want out of Indian dining. The music, art, decoration, food, feels traditional and friendly. Even the customers themselves have terrific attitudes. General pleasure is in the air. The extra mile - They love input. And they put the input to use. Last time I attended, we had a large group. They informed us that next time we had a big group coming, if we wanted, we could make somewhat make-shift buffet reservations - simply so they could prepare more for us to improve our dining experience! Our experience was phenomenal that night, and they wanted to do more for us! They are active on facebook, reading posts, responding, and doing everything they can to make their experience perfect. Spice Nation deserves more than Indy will ever be able to give them. But lets all give them all we've got. They are doing it for us!
(5)Chris D.
The Lafayette Square Mall area is pretty sketchy but there is a wonderful selection of ethnic eateries. Spice Nation is one of them! People will talk about going here for the buffet which they offer most days except Wednesday when you can order off their menu. It was actually a surprise since most people rave about the buffet. However their menu was fantastic and after eating there for a buffet, I almost prefer ordering off a menu. The service is fantastic. The guys running the place keep it very clean and are extremely friendly and take pride in what you order. They will spice things up to your liking and if you're not happy with anything, they make it right. That's such a big deal! I think it's very much worth experiencing for yourself. Even if you're a meat eater, seriously give their veggie buffet a try. You won't miss the meat! If you're not a fan of Indian food though and can't figure out what to order, get the lightly breaded spice mini corns off the menu, they're so good.
(3)Dee P.
Food was awful under new management. Not indian for Indians. I don't recommend anymore at all! Asked for dosa with buffet and he said okay. He charged us $8 extra!!! Food is horrible now. Don't go.
(1)P D.
Quality of both food and service has decreased drastically under new management.
(2)Jen N.
Spice Nation is awesome. I never thought I could give a vegetarian restaurant 5 stars, but this one is worthy. It is in the same building as India Palace on Lafayette Rd, but tastes nothing like it. (Don't get me wrong, I like India Palace, too.) Spice Nation is much more authentic. Most of the dishes are actually vegan, but for once, I didn't mind. The flavors are very authentic. The food isn't super spicy, but has a great combination of spices. The variety changes daily, from what I've seen on my multiple visits. It seems there are only a couple of employees, and the owner is the one who has generally shown me to my seat. He brings freshly cooked dosa (very thin pancakes filled with a spiced potato mixture) and plain or garlic naan to your table while you fill your plate at the buffet. (I've only been for the lunch buffet.) You also get free chai. They have some special events in the evening, including Indo-Chinese dishes and music. The restaurant seems to be very popular with Indians, which is always a great sign. Even if you are a proud omnivore, I highly recommend giving Spice Nation a try. I can guarantee nearly anyone that you won't regret it!

Omggg LOVE this place. I am visiting family in Indy from Austin, TX and was nervous about finding decent Indian food. I felt fairly confident after reading the reviews but you never know. I'm so glad we ate here. The service was great --our server was super, super helpful and kind. My Mom and sisters are not well-versed in Indian food and he explained some very helpful things to them about ordering. The best thing however was that we just happened to be there on their vegan night which is every Thursday! The buffet was all vegan and our server recommended the garlic naan but let us know if we're strictly vegan not to have it. I just wish I had a gigantic appetite so I could have stuffed my face more. Just under $12 for one person for the buffet with unlimited dosas and naan. Amazing food, great price, unbeatable service. I'll definitely hit it up again when I'm back to visit!
(5)Robb G.
Let me get one thing out of the way: this is the best Indian food in Indy. I dined here for lunch and the service was attentive and friendly (by the owner no less), the dishes were unique and fresh, and they make your naan and masala dosa to taste while you eat. Anyone who gives Spice Nation less than a glowing review should probably just go to Golden Corral where they'll be more at home.
(5)Vincent D.
Excellent Indian Food in which 95% of the food bar was Vegan. Clean and friendly staff. Will definitely go again when I'm in the area. Reasonably priced at 7.50 for an all you can eat lunch buffet.
(5)Howard F.
While I may disagree with some of the ratings of my local places, I depend on Yelp when I travel. And restaurants like Spice Nation are the reason why. I've eaten in plenty of Indian restaurants around the the country and Spice Nation is very good. Different flavors and unique dishes. The peanut butter stuffed banana peppers were excellent. And chickpea fudge?!?!?! Really? Really good!
(5)Arvind W.
Best South Indian restaurant in Indy. Can't beat the quality and value of the buffet. Pongal, vada, idly, dosa made to order, sambhar, varieties of chutney, and many more entrees and desserts. Good stuff indeed.
(5)Jeremy O.
Okay, we had to go back for more and that we did! We were greeted like we are old friends that had not been seen for years. The decor as others have said, is burgundy and yellow,. Oh and walk the long hallway and turn right before the grocery store, which in its self is worth the checkout. (psst sells Rich tea biscuits) The food as i have said before is out of this world good. The texture, smell and taste will make you wish that you had not eaten for 3 days so you can stuff yourself more. BTW the garlic nan is the best i have found in Indy. Why i hear you ask? It is very crisp the way it should be and not like pitta bread soft. The staff are out of this world great, think its the owners, will explain everything to you of whats whats is it north or south Indian etc. I in my visits have not found a con there, oh wait i do have one not going enough :)
(5)Rob C.
Fan-freaking-tastic. Food was great, service was friendly & helpful, prices were a bargain. Need to go back for one of the buffets and this could easily be a 5-star.
(4)Shawna V.
Not only is this a beautiful restaurant. Not only is there a sari shop, and salon where you can get your eyebrows threaded in front of it. Not only is there a fantastic Indian grocery behind it. Not only is it amazing Indian food. It is all Vegetarian. Last time I was there I adored the peppered cabbage dish. It was dry, spiced, cooked to perfection. Oh so good! but wait, you say, while I am a lover of Indian food, I AM A MEAT EATER! Hold on, hear me out. Meat eater and Indian food lover you are missing out. You are getting the same sorts of dishes at your normal indian buffet. Oh yes I am sure goat is quite exotic the first time you eat it. At this point you are just grazing on your favorites. You've had it before, you love it, and you'll have it again. Good for you! But you love Indian food. So why not go to a place where you can try MOAR DIFFERENT FOODS! They will have foods that you've not had before and yet from a cuisine you know you love. So what if they are missing the meat? It is just lunch. This is America you can get a meat snack any old time. Go. Enjoy! V= DUH! It is all veg. GF = easy to do. Stay away from the flat bread and stick with the rice and you should be fine.
(5)Leslie G.
Amazing food and friendly staff. I had never eaten Indian before and this was delicious! We will definitely be coming back. It's vegetarian and had so much flavor. Fabulous!
(5)Kim B.
After having Spice Nation on the "I-must-try-this-place-one-day" list for well over a year, we finally made it there for their vegan buffet tonight. We were greeted and seated immediately, and the dining room and buffet area were neat and clean. I asked to be sure that everything was vegan, and with the exception of some of the desserts, on Thursday night it is all vegan. There was a nice variety of flavors and spice levels. I did not not the exact names of all of the dishes, but my favorites were a cabbage dish, a noodle dish and a lentil dish I had over the perfectly cooked rice. I did not care for the 2 vegan desserts. One was a mango custard, but it was runny and too sweet for me. The other was what tasted like orange cream of rice. It was very thick and sticky. Others may find these quite tasty, but I did not. However, the yumminess of the other food made up for the dessert and I hope to return again soon!

Yuuuuum. I came here for dinner with my husband and my mom. My husband and I are vegetarian and my mom is vegan, so this was really an awesome choice for us. We went on a Tues night, so we ordered off the menu rather than having the buffet experience, and I have to say everything we ordered was delicious. We started with the appetizer sampler, which I believe was $6.95. This included a samosa, some pakora, some fried paneer, and one other thing (the name of which I forget). While not an awesome deal for the amount of food you get, it was a nice way to try several of the appetizers. What IS an awesome deal are their dinner prices. My mom and husband each ordered regular dinner entrees. My husband ordered some sort of paneer dish, and my mom ordered a vegan curry. I believe both of these were $7.95. I wanted to try something fancier, since this was our first time coming here, so I ordered the big sampler entree for $9.99. I was warned ahead of time that this takes 20 min to prepare, which was totally fine with me. My meal came out on a large silver tray and included a chickpea curry, a vegetable/okra curry, a spinach paneer, a house made yogurt sauce, Indian pickled vegetables (not my cup of tea), amazing spiced rice, naan, and some kind of awesome dessert ball thing that sort of tasted like french toast. This was a huge amount of food and it was AWESOME. I at a full dinner, shared some of the paneer with my husband, and still had enough for a full lunch the next day. This was amazing. The server was also very helpful and friendly, describing what all the different dishes on the tray of awesomeness that I ordered were and being on the ball with water refills, bringing more rice, etc. When we were paying the check, he told us about the dinner buffets they do on the weekends. One of the nights (maybe Friday?), the buffet also includes Indochinese dishes as well as Indian, so I definitely want to go back and check that out! There was an Indochinese section in the menu, but no one from my group ordered anything from it, and I'm really curious to see what that cuisine is all about! Anyhow, this restaurant is awesome and the only negative thing I can say is that it's not closer to my house!
(5)Tara M.
If you want Indian food that goes beyond the usual lunch buffet spread, then Spice Nation is your place. A totally vegetarian restaurant, Spice Nation's varied menu includes specialty items like dosas (Indian crepes) and chaat (Indian snack food). It's one of the only places where you can get South Indian food in Indianapolis. The service is warm and the food is great, if a bit oily at times (bad for the heart, good for the soul).
(4)Tamara Q.
Pretty authentic South Indian food. I went on a Saturday afternoon for late lunch buffet experience and it was still bustling with customers. The buffet has flavorful, saucy food. I did not get this unlimited chai people are speaking of, but that did not ruin my experience. Most of the dishes were very mild, not spicy. Next time I will have to try and order off the menu for a different experience. Also great is that it is next to an Indian grocery store!
(4)Hari R.
First time here... Trusted the ratings at Yelp and I should say it didn't disappoint us. The taste was authentic and quality was fantastic. Lunch buffet only for $8.71 is too less for the quality provided.
(5)Drew D.
Still the best Indian in Indianapolis. Why? Chai: unlimited. Dosas: made to order when you arrive. What's a dosa? Imagine a sourdough crepe, that's just slightly savory. Add some starch-and-spice based filling. Slather in chutney. This winter, I plan to knit a dosa quilt and sleep under it from December through February. Don't be jealous. Vegetarian dishes: varied, fresh, and ... actually containing spice! Great spinach dishes, black-eyed peas, mint + lentil rice, paneer. Naan: brought to your table, fresh. Blistered. Gulab Jamun: you should love them. Mohanthal: Gram flour fudge. This is pretty much the best thing ever. If you hate it, you can put it in yr pocket and leave it in my mailbox. Please thanks. Yeah, pretty much the same as Udupi/Passage to India, except: 1) Cleaner. 2) Super-friendly service. 3) Better variety & more spiced dishes. Make sure you visit the grocery next door and get some samosas to put in yer fridge. Everything is explicitly labelled as vegan or vegetarian, & the owner will bend over backwards to make sure your dietary restrictions are covered. That's something to return for!
(5)Desi D.
People have already said enough so I'll just say - BEST Indian Restaurant in Indy. Go there before there are lines outside the place!
(5)Holly G.
An amazing gem in the Indianapolis restaurant world! Spice Nation focuses on North Indian cuisine...all vegetarian and vegan dishes. If you're a carnivore, you will not be able to deny the delectableness of the food here! Service is fabulous...helpful staff...wonderful, exotic flavors abound. You MUST try this place!
(5)Christopher A.
The dosa was good; they made some in the kitchen and brought it out to us. Everything else we had came from the buffet. Not impressed. The menu listed all my favorites, even pani puri. Unfortunately, they wouldn't allow me to order off the menu. To my chagrin when a couple of desi families came in later, they did not eat from the buffet like the rest of us. Willing to chalk that up to a misunderstanding on my part, but all the same, nothing remarkable here food-wise. An important note: this place is dirty. Our table was dirty, especially the items kept at the table (S&P shakers, etc.). The staff was oddly behaved and rather disheveled. I really wanted to like this place. When I worked in Dallas I used to love this place called Taj Chaat House--very similar offerings, but all made-to-order. I would have very much liked to have a go-to spot for vegetarian Indian cuisine. If it wasn't so dirty, I'd probably give it another shot.

OK-I admit I know almost nothing about Indian food. But, I have yet to try something here that I don't like. Friendly, clean, and amazing food. Let me say, the word buffet is an immediate turn off for me. I think of places like Ryan's food troff. The buffet here is simple and the best way to experience new dishes. I took the owners recommendation to do the buffet both times I've been and I have no regrets. I may go off menu in the future, but this just seems like the best way to learn about the unique dishes and to determine what I really like. Everything was vegetarian and most items were vegan. I went on a Friday night which is Indochinese night and loved the selections. The curry noodles were yummy. The mushrooms with red chili may be my new favorite dish. The staff/owners are amazingly friendly. They are quick to make suggestions and help answer questions about the food.

I just went here for the first time with a friend who had been twice for the lunch buffet. I have always loved indian food though have recently been on an Indian cooking "kick" and have gone many times to another vegetarian and vegan accommodating Indian buffet for lunch in Greenwood. While the buffet in Greenwood makes me feel good about my Indian cooking skills, Spice Nation made me appreciate the complexity, full-flavor, and most importantly, balance of truly skilled Indian cooking. We ordered the salt and peppered corn per the servers recommendation, along with Idli which was accompanied by three exquisite chutneys - one, a spiced, peppery, sweet coconut chutney that blew my mind. After just the appetizers I was fully impressed with the chef's spice-work. For an entree I chose Rajma Masala -North Indian curried kidney beans - and Bindi Masala - a curry of okra which cost $8 with roti and basmati rice. Talk about a deal. Having enjoyed the (overly pungent from too much hing) version of Bindi Masala I made at home, I was happy to see it on the menu. I was surprised by how perfect this dish was. From the soft-but-not-mushy texture of the beans to the layering of the spices, everything was right on. The Bindi Masala was also delicious, though it was my first time trying it and I have nothing to compare it to. I will definitely be going back to Spice Nation as long as we are both in the same city. Quality of the food aside, the owner is very friendly and accommodating to those unfamiliar with Indian food and it seems like it is his mission to provide as many vegan options as humanly possible on his menu. He was even talking about the possibilities of vegan desserts in the summer. :) This just in...an all vegan buffet on Thursday nights!

Spice Nation is the old Udupi/Passage to India restaurant that's hidden inside Indian Plazal on Lafayette Road. They've been open for about a week now. My husband and I enjoyed Udupi before it closed and were sorry to see it go, but we're delighted that many of the same dishes we enjoyed at Udupi are still on the menu at Spice Nation. In fact, the place is under new management and ownership, but much of the old staff from Udupi is still there. The decor is upgraded and the service is good. And, they're rotating the buffet every day now. The gulab jamun is lighter, the matter paneer more flavorful, and the dosas are about the same, but somehow slightly better. Actually, everything is just a little better than it was before. This is, in short, a great place to go to enjoy vegetarian Indian cuisine at a wonderfully reasonable price- lunch for two with drinks was under $15.
(5)Maria L.
Delicious Indian food, the best in Indy...I am a meat lover and I left feeling very satisfied because everything was so good (I didn't miss having any meat in my meal)!
(5)Theresa L.
This place is truly GOOD. I used to dine here when it was Udupi--the service and atmosphere have remained consistent. All vegetarian buffet, so no surprises. The food is always hot and fresh. The staff is neat, clean, and friendly. Authentic and warm. Love the all-you-can-drink Chai and coconut rice.

Spice Nation is the third South/North Indian restaurant in a series to occupy the same place; I've been a fan of all three restaurants. However, Spice Nation took the quality all the way back to India regarding authenticity and rich spices and flavors! The chef and part owner, Elayabharathi Dhanakodi, called me early in the month of October to tell me that he was taking over what used to be Passage To India. I almost jumped for joy because anyone who recalls him, will remember that that man KNOWS how to cook really well! Ever since their grand opening in late October, I've been there at least two or three times a week. Their food is not too bland nor too spicy. They bring naan or dosa to your table and they always keep the ambience filled with lovely Indian music and pleasant incense. It's always clean therein and the host Suresh is more like a family member than a waiter. The chefs: Maharaj and Elayabharathi imbue their food with love and lots of healthy herbs and yes, spice! Warning: their food is highly addictive and tasty and if you don't have it once or twice a week you will suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Haha...

From all the rave reviews, I had very high expectations. But to be honest I found it to be just OK. It's terrific to have a vegetarian Indian restaurant, don't get me wrong. The buffet is a great value. But I was underwhelmed by some of the dishes - not rich enough, is maybe the best way I can put it. I have truly been spoiled, however, by Sharma's in Lafayette. Not only that, but someone was using a chemical cleaner on the tables around us as we were eating. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but this is a real pet peeve of mine - it had a strong chemical smell that interfered with the taste of the food. I would come back to try the buffet again, and to order some of my favorite veg dishes off the menu.

Absolutely delicious food! I was impressed by the large selection of vegan food. I will definitely be going back to this restaurant.
(5)Params R.
Average food, certainly not worth the hype (5-stars)!!! The guy at the main counter is a total showoff. It was my first time there and the customer service was very bad!! He came to our table and kept repeatedly telling us how they did not make rava dosa s usually and they made an exception this time. I was not sure what was the need to repeat this to us so many times. Tea is included in buffet, because we were in a hurry, we chose to leave with a to-go cup. He billed us for that saying, he doesn't expect us to take things out. And, kept repeating how he was being considerate to us as it was the first time. And, went on explaining rules of the buffet. This is the worst way to treat customers, I am not sure how good or bad Udupi was earlier but this restaurant certainly does not (yet) compare even close to several other Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. So, I do not see a need to show off. Instead I would be happy if they treated their customers properly and helped them have a good dining experience. Good items were: Sambar, Pongal, Tomato Chutney and Pakodas. Everything else was average.
(2)Cassie S.
Haven't been to a better Indian buffet. Very good service, too. They care whether you have everything you need. Oh, and unlimited chai tea. Mostly vegan food. Can't go wrong!
(5)Jenny S.
I love Spice Nation! It is an absolutely delicious buffet of vegetarian/vegan Indian food. I've never had a dish that I did not like. I do wish they had a bit more actual vegetables on the buffet. But it is extremely tasty, as well as cheaper than some of the other lunch buffets.
(5)Ariel S.
Garlic Naahn is delightful. Buffet is awesome. Hard to find restaurats. Hints: go into the "Indian shopping center mall" part and go to the back and there it is near the end of the hallway on the right.
(5)Stefan S.
Absolutely perfect.
(5)Catherine P.
This is one of the best Indian buffets I've been to. When you come in, they ask if you're vegan or vegetarian, and if you prefer spicy or mild food. They then cater your individual dosa to your requirements and bring it out to you as a separate dish. They also brought out an individual garlic naan that was fresh specifically for our table. These are touches only seen at the nicest buffets! They not only have unlimited chai, but they also have a vegan version with almond milk. There are about a dozen vegan or vegetarian dishes that are hot. All of them were fresh and not crusty or picked over. They have unique cold dishes and sauces. The spiciness was adequate for me. I prefer spicy food. My mom thought the spiciness could be a little more intense. She prefers mild food. I'm not sure if that helps more than it confuses. The staff appeared out of nowhere and promptly filled glasses and removed plates. The decor was tasteful. I went on a Saturday at 12:30 pm and there were a lot of loud kids, but what do you want at that hour? The music was not too loud and it was enjoyable. It's about as loud as I expected it to be, and the noise did not interrupt conversation. It was quieter than some romantic late night dinners I've had in Manhattan, but I guess that's not saying much? The price is quite reasonable. I only have a few more days left in Indianapolis, but one of them will be spent here even if I have to go alone.

Loved it.. !! Authentic Indian food... and good service. I am vegeterian and so I was happy to find vegeterian indian restaurant but my husband likes non veg but when we tried this restaurant even he was in loved it. They also offer complimentatory tea and variety of dosas for buffet. and be aware there is veg/ non veg indian restaurant next to this one... it's worst food I ever had - even non veg was pathetic... so even if you are meat lover and carving for Indian food I would say try spice nation and don't think of going to restaurant next door -- India Palace...
(5)Estef S.
Hands down this is the BEST Indian food I have ever had! If you come across this place you HAVE to eat here. The food tastes so authentic and fresh. EVERYTHING is delicious. There are so many choices and it's all VEGETARIAN!
(5)Karena S.
The best Indian food I've had in Indianapolis so far, by far. From the delicious food to the nice employees to the ambiance, everything was wonderful. We went on a Friday evening and helped ourselves to the buffet; all of it is vegetarian and some of it is vegan, which was clearly labeled. The waiter was extremely helpful and nice, too. The only downside was that my coat smelled like this place for the next two days after the visit, but it was totally worth it. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Tiffany T.
This is my go-to place when I feel like eating Indian food, or just when I want really good and cheap food. Even though I love meat, this vegetarian restaurant is just amazing. I always go for the lunch buffet, and the choices are different every time. I have not yet tried something that I didn't like, and the free chai that is offered is definitely a bonus. The servers are very friendly and bring out naan and another delicious treat that can be described as mashed potatoes in a crispy crepe. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Kenny Z.
This is a must-go. This is not some typical buffet you can find elsewhere. I am a meat lover but I still enjoy visiting here once a while. The food is well-prepared and healthy. Visit this place and start from there.
(5)Danielle E.
We absolutely love Spice Nation. We have been 5+ times in the past 2 months and have had a wonderful experience every time. The attention and service we receive when we dine at Spice Nation is superb. The owner truly wants every diner to have a great experience. As vegans, we have really enjoyed the all vegan Thursday night buffet. There are so many options for vegans though, that we have many choices regardless of when we go. The food is always amazing. My husband loves the hot, fresh dosai. The flavors of all of the dishes have been phenomenal. We have never left less than satisfied (and stuffed!). We will be frequent customers at Spice Nation. If you like Indian cuisine, you will not be disappointed.
(5)Justin O.
The owner / manager gives off a very caring vibe. We had the Sun eve buffet and everything was delicious.
(5)Carri G.
So amazed to find such high quality food, Indian or otherwise, at such an incredibly reasonable price. Not to mention the attentive and knowledgeable service! Spice Nation is an amazing find for me as a vegetarian, but also for my meat-eating husband, who asked why we had ever bothered to eat any where else ever. The vegetable briyani is amazing and will give you a whole new idea of what Indian food is and can be if you've mainly eaten Indian food at the local buffets, like I have.
(5)Cristina C.
Used to be Udupi. My boyfriend and I decided to try it out since it was unique in that it was a vegetarian Indian buffet. The fried items were not fresh and were doughy. Naan bread was greasy. The food was not that flavorful, which is surprising for Indian food. The buffet was also kind of picked over (1:00 p.m. on a Monday). There was only a tiny bit of chai tea left and it was cold. After bringing it to their attention, thirty minutes had passed and they hadn't made more. Very disappointing. We were not given more water frequently as is the norm in most Indian restaurants. Also, one of the busboys touched my behind. I can't say for sure if it was intentional or not but I felt very uncomfortable. When we checked out, the cashier apologized to us and explained they had been overwhelmed because a very large party had come before us unexpectedly. Maybe things would be better another day, but there are too many good Indian places around here to give them a second chance. It gets two stars instead of one only because of the apology at the end.
(2)Eli B.
Some of the best vegetarian Indian food I've had. This place is located in a shopping mall called "Indian plaza" -- Yup, you've come to the right place. Super nice proprietor and quiet atmosphere.
(5)Sacha B.
I echo all of the excellent reviews of this place! Was there for lunch and couldn't say enough wonderful things about the experience. The food was delicious & Deepak was helpful and friendly. I am not a vegetarian but no matter--Spice Nation left nothing to be desired. I am looking forward to going back on different days to try the other buffet menus.
(5)Srinivasan N.
Wow .....Food is great here...Honestly this is the first hotel i felt like a home food. So colorful food with no impact .... I love to come anytime i get an opportunity ...
(5)Rick G.
Go, Now. The end.
(5)Jason B.
(5)Jon C.
If I could eat like this every day, I could go vegan without any problems! Everything is so fresh, so flavorful, and so good for you (right?)!
(5)Eddie C.
(4)Kjirsten K.
(5)Amie L.
GO! GO! GO!!!!
(4)Mary A.
Great service and really tasty food! My mother accidentally left her cell phone there and they called me to let me know that they had it and to come in and get it! Great place to have lunch!

(4)Chris D.
(2)Beth B.
(5)Vincent D.
Excellent Indian Food in which 95% of the food bar was Vegan. Clean and friendly staff. Will definitely go again when I'm in the area. Reasonably priced at 7.50 for an all you can eat lunch buffet.
(5)Rob C.
Fan-freaking-tastic. Food was great, service was friendly & helpful, prices were a bargain. Need to go back for one of the buffets and this could easily be a 5-star.
(4)Jen N.

(5)Shawna V.

(4)Drew D.

People have already said enough so I'll just say - BEST Indian Restaurant in Indy. Go there before there are lines outside the place!

(5)Lee S.
(5)Julia C.

(2)Sareen L.

(4)Prashanth R.
Excellent food and service. Been there twice. Once for lunch and other time for dinner. Highly recommend this place for some yummy authentic indian vegetarian food. I am in Bloomington and will definitely visit the next time I go to the city.
(5)Rohit M.
Good food, Great service and vegan friendly. Hope to come back here whenever we are in town!
(5)Angie L.
The food is great, not extraordinary but definitely great Indian. What puts this place over the top for me? Hands down, the best customer service I've experienced at any restaurant in Indianapolis!
(5)Rebekah P.
(4)Leslie G.
Amazing food and friendly staff. I had never eaten Indian before and this was delicious! We will definitely be coming back. It's vegetarian and had so much flavor. Fabulous!
(5)M U.
Loved it..

(5)Ayla W.
I like the restaurant. It's not the best I've ever had... However it's ok. When trying to find it, it seems strange because it's a little strip mall inside.
(3)Brittany L.

(4)Nessie V.
Excellent buffet in a little cluster of subcontinental businesses in Indian-apolis. All veg, and the vegan items are labeled as such. I also appreciated the abundance of nonstandard dishes available, though they did have a few favorites up there. Will go again.
(5)Trena T.

Ate here once when was old owners. -1star Came back under new management. These guys are THE BEST! They are very friendly and accommodating. Once saag paneer wasn't on the buffet and he offered to make it for me (big smiles) it gets no better than that. The food is sooooooooooo good!

Delicious Indian food, the best in Indy...I am a meat lover and I left feeling very satisfied because everything was so good (I didn't miss having any meat in my meal)!

First time here... Trusted the ratings at Yelp and I should say it didn't disappoint us. The taste was authentic and quality was fantastic. Lunch buffet only for $8.71 is too less for the quality provided.

Best South Indian restaurant in Indy. Can't beat the quality and value of the buffet. Pongal, vada, idly, dosa made to order, sambhar, varieties of chutney, and many more entrees and desserts. Good stuff indeed.

Haha...

Absolutely delicious food! I was impressed by the large selection of vegan food. I will definitely be going back to this restaurant.

Garlic Naahn is delightful. Buffet is awesome. Hard to find restaurats. Hints: go into the "Indian shopping center mall" part and go to the back and there it is near the end of the hallway on the right.

This is a must-go. This is not some typical buffet you can find elsewhere. I am a meat lover but I still enjoy visiting here once a while. The food is well-prepared and healthy. Visit this place and start from there.

The owner / manager gives off a very caring vibe. We had the Sun eve buffet and everything was delicious.
