I think some of the other reviews of this place are overly harsh. This isn't my favorite sushi place, but I've always had good sushi there and great service. They have kept most of the rolls from when they were sushi on the rocks, especially their specialty rolls. I think if you're someone just getting into sushi, that isn't going to be overly critical about the texture and freshness of the fish (come on everyone, we live in Indiana!) you will definitely enjoy this place. I have never ever taken a novice sushi eater to this place who did not absolutely fall in love with the snow mountain roll. My personal favorites are the kamikaze and the oshizushi, but that's based on my dislike of fried rolls. SOTR is a pretty good standard roll also. They're udoni is superior to the udoni I've tried in any other sushi restaurant around Indy. The playboy roll is cool for its presentation, but like one reviewer mentioned, kind of oily tasting. Get it for your niece on her 10th birthday, like I did. Don't get it for yourself when you want to try quality sushi. Get the kamikaze!

Does anyone else hate giving bad reviews? I do. The only time it felt good was maybe that South City Schnucks review (because that place is terrifying and people should be aware)... The Marsh review even made me upset to score low... And they literally pointed at me and said rude things. So anyway, as someone who follows Lorelai Gilmore's belief system that a stove is oftentimes better served as storage for shoes, I eat out a lot. In St Louis there's The Bike Waiter and GrubGo. Fishers has Foodler (meh) and Order-In (yay!) I used the latter (if my yay didn't clue you in) after a long day at work (12 hour shifts are fun) and decided to order something I haven't had in Indy nearly as often as I do in STL. Sushi. I didn't feel like going to Bento (see review of that awesome sushi), so I decided to branch out and order from here via Order-In. They were a lot quicker than quoted. I will say that. But look at my photo for this place. Look at my sushi. I can't remember the name of the roll, just the description: Shrimp tempura. Spicy tuna. And avocado. Topped with soft shell crap mix It should have been good. It should have been great... But presentation is everything. Fresh tuna is everything. Otherwise you feel like you're eating a tuna roll made from leftover sushi bits... And that's how this tasted. Overly fishy (but not a good flavorful way) and it looked disgusting. I didn't even eat 3 whole pieces. I couldn't bring myself to... However! The two stars represent how great the spring rolls and banana tempura were! So yummy! I just wish a place that was all about sushi was all about good sushi... Especially for that $15 roll... How something that was $4 tasted SO much better than something over 3 times the cost... I will never understand

We came for our anniversary and enjoyed the Bento box special. Choose a red snapper teriyaki as one if the entrees, and large portion of sashimi as the other. The tempura veggies were great, the teriyaki grilled veggies were also just wonderful. I especially liked the super white tuna sashimi served with thin slices of lime...delicious. (Just beware of other sashimi that might be served with hot pepper ...it's much hotter than lime :-) ) The salad with ginger dressing wasn't exactly my favorite but it was a larger dish than expected. The dressing was a bit bland and watery. We'll probably go back again for another try and take advantage of some of their specials.

Delicious food!! Also sushi is half-price on weekdays from 5p-6p, so you can't beat that! I've been here multiple times, and the sushi is consistently great. These are my favorites dishes: Appetizer: Gyoza Sushi: Snow mountain roll Dessert: chocolate or coffee mochi The only time I was disappointed was when I booked a work party in the back room (large group). I went in to the restaurant and booked it with the manager. The week before the party I called to make sure everything was still good to go, and to place my order for appetizers -- and they had no record of my reservation. Luckily, no one else had booked the Friday we needed and I was able to still reserve the back room. The waitress that served us during the party was attentive and friendly, but she didn't seem to know the menu very well when my coworkers had questions. Overall, I still love this place and I definitely plan to keep coming back.

Right now anyway, all sushi is 50% on Monday and Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.! Great deal, and no strings attached like I've seen at other places (the 50% off applies to regular and specialty rolls alike). I had a spicy scallop roll and a specialty roll with spicy crab and tuna on it (can't find it on the menu online), as well as a small hot sake for $14.95! The rolls were both very tasty, although not mind-blowing. Nice atmosphere, dark decor, kind of urban. Service was fine.

Nothing special. Food was ok. Admittedly did not have any sushi since I was pregnant when I ate here. I ordered a lunch chic katsu bento box, which included more than the menu stated (salad, egg roll, tempura, Cali roll, miso soup, rangoon). We also got the tempura udon, tempura on the side, and we got another huge serving. The server was new and a little slow w order details, drink refills, etc even tho it was nearly empty for lunch. Had to ask for the tempura dip and salad dressing. We prob won't be bàck.

We visited Sakana with some friends and, while we had a good meal, I don't think they did anything that set them apart from any other sushi place in town. The sushi itself was good and the raw fish had a good flavor. They have a good variety of rolls, comparable to most places in the area. The bar offerings were limited, but they had the basics covered (even if that didn't include my choice of gin). The service was the best part - our waitress was friendly, attentive, and made it a good experience. So, while we enjoyed ourselves, I don't think we'll be making much of an effort to visit here again. Sakana is good but forgettable, and certainly not worth the drive for us in the future.

Cannot recommend. We ordered a couple veggie rolls and veggie Yaki soba. All you can get better at a grocery store. Mojito was made with some low quality mixer. Service poor. Only a few tables - yet server never came around after food was served. We wanted to order veggie fried rice, but no luck. No silverware or chopsticks, no napkin. Wanted to really like this place but will not go back. Owner was nice and came around to say hi, but he's not going to make it with food and service as is. Have to do better

I am seriously starting to think this location is cursed. Prior to Sankana this place was Sushi on the Rocks and before that it was something else then at one time it was Echelon. I mean many have tried, but success is rare. The location is ideal, but nothing seems to work. I was hoping Sankana would be different, but after my experience tonight it appears that it would be a great candidate for Kitchen Nightmare. I was excited to check this place out to celebrate a friends bday and enjoy the half price sushi menu they offer on Mondays. When I arrived there wasn't anyone at the hostess desk, so I kind of wandered through until I found someone who was able to direct me to my group. I was a part of a group of about 18 or so people, but they only assigned one waitress. I could tell that she was overwhelmed, but did the best she could. Ordering was slightly chaotic, but it's slightly understandable. The menu is fairly extensive and comes with your traditional faire. I ordered two of the specialty rolls, the Playboy and Super Crunchy. After enjoying time talking to the people in my group, we all started to think, um, where's the food? Again we tried to understand that we are a part of a large group, but it still felt longer than usual. So our food arrived...one to two rolls at a time. Huh? It took awhile for everyone's food to come out, which was uncomfortable. So finally after most people received their food, I started to dig in. I started with the Super Crunchy with had salmon, spicy mayo, tempura chips, etc. The presentation was nice, but the roll itself was just ok. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't spectacular either. They mayo was a bit heavy and didn't settle right. Next up, the infamous Playboy roll. What a fun roll because they light the foil surrounding it on FIYAH! Well, I'm a bit of a klutz and had a hard time putting the flame out. Oopps! I was excited to dig in. At first bite it was definitely spicy and had quite the kick to it. Again, the roll itself was meh. I should have let it cook longer. It was super heavy and I can't believe I'm using the word, but it was oily and greasy. It just was not enjoyable at all. Huge disappointment. I would not recommend even for half price. Chaos ensued when we tried to get out checks. I've been to many places with large groups and I just don't understand why this process was so difficult. Several of the checks were incorrect and it was just messy. The owner came out and tried to make nice, which was appreciated. I was hoping this place would be a winner and my new sushi spot. It wasn't the worst I've ever had, but I believe they need to rework some things. Most likely I will not return. Bummer!

This placed used to be Sushi on the Rocks. They offered somewhat the same menu. However, they don't have the same promo and points perk membership. The owners are nice and accommodating. The food and experience can be better. It seriously went downhill. This place is in need of Gordon Ramsay's touch.

My wife and I have patronized this restaurant several times, and deemed it our go-to sushi spot in Indianapolis. However, that has changed because of a recent experience, and we'll be looking for a new favorite sushi restaurant. My wife's family was visiting on Valentine's Day weekend, and we choose to visit SoT on Valentine's Day for dinner. We had purchased a Groupon long before, and I verified that it could be used given it's a holiday. The fine print stated the coupon wasn't valid on a federal holiday, and I verified that Valentine's Day is not a federal holiday. I then encouraged my in-laws to purchase the Groupon, as there was no rule against using multiple coupons at one table. When it came time for the bills, the server said Groupons weren't being accepted because it's a holiday. We explained that the Groupon stated it can't be used on a federal holiday, which shouldn't apply on Valentine's Day. She spoke with the owner, who told her no, and that was final. We asked to speak with the owner, but was told he was "too busy". He eventually came over and said Groupons were not accepted on major holidays, regardless of the Groupon's fine print. After some discussion, he walked away from our table. While discussing the matter with our server some more, who was fantastic through the whole ordeal, he came back over and agreed to accept my in-law's Groupon. We told him my wife and I had one as well, which he accepted as well, though rather begrudgingly. After we left my wife told me the owner glared at her the entire time we walked out of the restaurant. Though the whole experience, it was clear that the owner of this establishment isn't concerned with treating customers with respect. It should also be noted that he is a new owner, which occurred when Sushi on the Rocks was rebranded Sakana of Toyko. After multiple visits since the rebranding, it's clear to us that the change was not for the better.

I was out here on business and went to Sakana because I was missing the sushi back home in San Francisco. It was fantastic. I asked the chef, Bart, to prepare me both nigiri and maki rolls of his choice, and it was all amazing and beautifully prepared. The salmon and ahi nigiri was like butter, smooth and yummy. He also brought out an appetizer in these small fried cups which avocado which were amazing. It was his own creation. If I am anywhere near the Indianapolis area again, I am making the drive out to Sakana.

Here for 1/2 priced sushi and a little girl talk...it's not bad and the 1/2 price sushi made it better...the rolls were thin and not as meaty...I would come back for 1/2 priced but not for regular priced sushi....

The nigiri here is over priced and you only get one per order for the price of two. Also the service here was incredibly slow and our server was uninformed about the menu at best and completely rude at worst. I do not think I will ever be eating here again. Also the miso soup is too salty and also very poorly mixed. Hopefully they will get it together in the future.

Being from a different state, visiting family, we had heard this place was good. The menu was hard to navigate, because half of the ingredients are not listed on it. My simple allergies became a difficult task. We had ordered an appetizer, which we believed to fit my allergens, but a sauce was layered on top that was not in the description. In order to get the exact same thing, without sauce, we would have to buy it again for the exact same price. Then our dishes arrived, a piece of my eel rolls had what seemed to be a serrated piece of skin from the eel. The meal continued to be a good experience. In the end, I did decide to have the appetizer made again. We then received our bills. We had two groupon coupons for our separate bills. We were told we could not use it on a holiday, but the coupon clearly stated it could not be used on a "federal holiday". Valentine's Day is not a federal holiday. Our waitress went to talk to the owner/manager. When she came back, she said that the manager was "too busy to talk to us". The restaurant was maybe half full. After a few times talking to the manager, he finally came to our table. He said everything our patient waitress had told us, but would not budge. The offer was good, and no specifics on the coupon were violated. I had even pulled up a list of federal holidays on my phone and showed him the list. After ten minutes of going back and forth, he finally accepted our rightfully obtained deal. When the people we had with us said they had one as well, he stated that it had a limit of one per table. This was specified nowhere on the groupon, and was seemingly made up by him. After getting the rightful price on our dinner, we exited the building, while he glared at us.

We ordered Sushi Sampler, Squid Salad, a Specialty Roll, Beef Teriyaki Dinner, Gyoza, Sake, beer and a few other single pieces of sushi. The Gyoza didn't come until we reminded the server/bartender/host or whatever he was, and didn't get the soup and salad offered with the dinner until we asked for them; to which we were told soup and salad does not come with the dinner. I opened the menu and pointed to where it clearly states that soup and salad comes with Dinner Entrees. The miso soup was lukewarm and the iceberg lettuce was so watery it diluted the dressing to a tasteless watery soup. I didn't care for one of the rolls and returned it, and promptly ordered another to replace it, but it was not very good either. The beef in the teriyaki was not a good cut and reminded me of a frozen food entree. The dish also had zucchini and mushrooms in it which I thought was a bit odd for a teriyaki, and two ice cream scoops of room temperature white rice accompanied the main dish. The 5 pieces of Gyoza were pretty tasty once they arrived and the sampler of sushi was nothing to get excited about, when considering the price charged for the dish, and the squid salad looked more like large pieces of unidentified sea meats served with tasteless raw beet spirals along side, and the two additional pieces of salmon and Uni were just okay. When it came time to pay, I noticed the roll I returned was still on the check, when suddenly the server came back, took the check and gave me an "updated" bill with the additional sushi roll ordered to replace the one I didn't like. I told the server I returned the roll because I didn't like it and he just stood there and said nothing. I looked at him and said, 'you mean I have to pay for the roll I didn't like, returned to the kitchen and pay for the replacement?' Again, he just stood there and said nothing. My boyfriend didn't want me to make a big deal of this, but I continued to linger on the subject to which there was no reply or reasoning. To sum it up: The food was mediocre at best; nothing memorable, noteworthy or special, and the ambience sucked. We sat at the Sushi Bar and could barely hold a conversation amidst the whir and din of coolers, refrigerators, fans, dishes clanging in the kitchen, the TV in the corner, boxes of Sake rattling that were placed on top of a cooler unit, plus the oh so terrible Muzak playing in the background. All of this noise made the place seem chaotic and mechanical, and what was even more annoying was the fact the waiter/host/or whatever was actually singing along with the songs over the static laced speaker system! The entire bill was nearly $94 and minus $20 from the Groupon came to $74, which still included the returned sushi roll. Yes, it would have made a difference if I didn't have to pay for the returned sushi, and perhaps was compensated in turn by a gesture of good customer service for them to try to make an effort to offer me another at no charge. In my opinion it was truly a waste of time and money. I cannot recommend Sakana and have no intent to return.

This one of the best in Indy. The fish is always fresh. The service is always good (the manager is great as well, always coming by to talk to our family.) I suggest the playboy roll or get the sashimi. I really don't understand why this place doesn't get better reviews. I wouldn't waste my money anywhere else.

Great food. Great drinks. Great service. Hardly anyone here on a Friday night. Very relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a date night. Danielle, the bartender, is really nice.

We had an absolutely delicious meal at sakana tonight! Not only delicious but great customer service too!! The Thai Roll, the dragon Roll were both divine and the house salad was fresh and very generous. Both times I have been to Sakana I have enjoyed specialty cocktails and was thrilled with them.

Best sushi in Indianapolis without question. Great service, fresh and tasty fish, and great miso soup. Favorite selections are the spicy tuna roll and the big daddy. But honestly, everything is fantastic!

The food was ok, not bad but I have def had better. The service however was horrible. I was dining with a party of 7 on a Saturday evening. We were the only customers in the restaurant, yet we had to wait extremely long for our orders to be taken and for food and drinks to be delivered and refilled. Once we were done eating we waited 15 min for the bill and eventually one of the party members got up to go find our server. The server was sitting on her phone texting. Had the food been AMAZING I would be interested in returning, but I had better food at places that offered much better service.

There's a reason it had no wait at 7 on a Saturday...portions are small prices are too high and food is less than mediocre. It took forever to get food, drinks, and check and it was not even close to busy. Many better places to eat.

We had an amazing experience. The sushi is fantastic and the drinks were fabulous. The Texas roll was our favorite. Danielle is a wonderful server and we have no complaints at all. Probably the fastest service we ever received at a sushi place. I think we found our favorite sushi bar!

First time eating here. Walked in was immediately greeted by a cute hostess. Then seated and I was introduced to the owner. We ordered 4 rolls and a buddha berry. The drink was made perfect. Nice and sweet. Great drink. The rolls came out really fast and was nicely presented. My wife really enjoyed her rolls and I was presently supprised by the hiwayan roll. The waiter told me not to use soy sauce for that one. It had a refreshing taste. Overall we had a great experience and will be back.
