I must say I am a bit surprised at all of the one-star reviews for Number One Chinese Restaurant. I have had delivery from here once and take-out more than a few times now since moving back to Indy last summer. I stumbled upon this place by accident, as I thought I was calling a different restaurant that is slightly closer to my house, but this was the only Chinese restaurant I saw in the phone book on Crawfordsville. (Yes, I didn't have internet at the time and had to resort to old school tactics for locating something. Ha!) My favorite dish, which I was glad to see on their menu, is the Schezuan Tofu/Bean Curd. I honestly didn't like Chinese food a whole lot until I had that dish when I first lived in St. Louis. Number One does it just as good as my favorite places out there. I might even say better just because number one has never carelessly thrown an assortment of meat into my food like a former favorite place that shall remain nameless (for now). I just love that it's spicy, yet not overly hot, and has a lot of flavor. I LOVE the tofu cubes the best, probably followed by the mushrooms second. It is also chock full of broccoli, green peppers, snap peas, water chestnuts, carrots, and onions. Am I missing anything? A vegan/veggie lover's dream! The sauce is so good I could drink it. This is an amazing meal, over steamed rice, that I can stretch over a few days if I don't scarf it down too fast. It's one of those things that I'll keep eating "one more" bite of even when I am full. The other item I have had from here is the Hot and Sour Soup. It is SPICY and boiling hot, which tells me it's fresh. I was sick when I had it and I'll tell ya, this will cure what ails ya! No joke! It was suggested by a well-meaning know-it-all friend that insisted it was vegan. It may be vegan at some places, but I did detect some egg in there. The egg aside, the spicy broth, mushrooms and tofu are awesome! I could maybe do without so many carrots, bamboo, and cabbage though, but that's just me. I'd love to live off this stuff if it were eggless. Oh, and I almost forgot the little bag of crispy wonton strips they give you to put on top. Very good! They have a veggie soup as well that I would like to try, although it isn't listed as spicy, which means it may not be as good, but I will let you know as soon as I try it. My best friend and I stopped in here to place an order on my last visit which was April 23rd. She got some shrimp lo mein and possibly another item that I am forgetting. I remember her liking it and that she ate all the shrimp and just had some of the noodles left over. It was a good choice for dinner as we were starving and I needed a distraction as well as some nutrition during the final funeral preparations we were making that night for my sister... I really had meant to get delivery from here when my sister was down the last time so it's a shame we didn't get to do that. It may be the norm, as I am not especially used to getting delivery, but there is a delivery charge on top of the tax and tip, which I find a little disappointing. Made what I thought would be a cheap meal cost a bit more than expected, but, hey, I guess you pay for the convenience. Just a good thing that I am not one of those people who scrimp on the tip because of the delivery charge. Delivery wasn't SUPER fast from what I remember, but not more than 45 min to an hour in the early afternoon. But if it was extremely fast, I would wonder about the quality. Getting take-out is also not real speedy, but, again, totally worth the wait for hot, fresh food. I'd say twenty minutes? The restaurant ceiling, etc. have definitely seen better days, but my friend pointed out that may be the fault of the property owner of the strip mall, not the proprietors of the restaurant who surely lease the space. There are some tables to eat at, if you are so inclined, but I prefer to take it to go. Staff are always nice and ask if you want sauces, etc. So, I am not promising you the fanciest world class experience of your life, but if you are in Speedway, I think Number One deserves a try. I did not eat the things that the other reviewers did, so the bad reviews could be warranted in those cases, but I have had nothing but good food here. And I feel I am a pretty good judge. I'll take this local, family-owned business over the chain restaurants in the area, any day. I think I need to make another trip over here and SOON!

My meal was very good, ate in. The fresh hot food was worth the wait. Good fresh veggies and Chicken not overcooked, good flavor in sauce. Egg roll didn't have much filling so it was a lot of dough, but cooked well and fresh. Obviously focused on carryout, bordered on rude and would not give water to drink with meal, you have to buy the bottled.

Not good at all. I ordered here on a few separate occasions: general tso's chicken, beef and mushroom lunch special, and bourbon chicken. The beef and mushroom was okay... A bit garlicky and had barely any beef, mushrooms were fresh though. The fried rice that came with it was terribly greasy and was over cooked and tasteless. I am someone who never opens a soy sauce packet Chinese restaurants and I did for this one just to try to give it some flavor. The general tso's chicken I ordered was not good at all... Now I love GSC, it's one of my favorites (how can crispy fried chicken in some sweet/spicy sauce be bad?) but this was so disappointing. It was very sweet and I ordered it extra spicy. The chicken wasn't very crispy and I could taste the flour that they used to coat the chicken. That's a big no-no from me. The flavors were very bland and the only thing that had any flavor was the overly-sweet sauce. Completely nasty. Did not eat more than 2 pieces. The bourbon chicken was just a bad. The sauce was thick and gelatinous. It was so overly sweet it was almost sickening. I've had bourbon chicken before and it was never this bad. So disappointed in this place. I won't order from here again.

Being the first time in Indianapolis I thought about getting chinese the first night. The Shrimp Lo Mein smelled like cat urine and my chicken on a stick was rubber.

We ordered food for delivery to our hotel room near the airport. The best thing about it was the steamed white rice. The Vegetarian Delight was bland and the baby corn tasted like it had been just poured out of a jar. Sad, because the other vegetables were fresh and it should have been a nice, simple dish. The pork dumplings were undercooked and tasted like pork seasoning had been sprinkled on top of a damp paper towel. The pork fried rice just had tiny pieces of pork and was just ok. We fed the rest of the pork fried rice to our dog, who thought it was wonderful.

I'm on the hunt for a really good Chinese place.... This place did not deliver, literally! Well, they did, but about 30 mins late. (they told us 20 mins and never called us until an hour later, the driver did not know English and wouldn't call when he arrived) Hey, I know it's snowing outside, BUT for the people who are stuck inside working all day, WE depend on the delivery drivers to make the effort and do their job, Deliver!!! Couple of co-workers and I decided to get some grub. Little did we know, working within less than a mile distance from this place, we would end up receiving cold & over cooked food. Plus they charged us a little more last minute. The fried rice was white rice with soy sauce!! No carrots, eggs or peas in the rice. I use to live at this place and get lunch here all the time back in 2000. BUT...This place has gone down hill, and since money is tight, ALL of us will not be going back to this place......EVER!

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America.
