Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

All of the other customers seemed to be calling ahead and coming in to pick up take-out bags. But they were attentive and happy to serve us inside, and were happy to accommodate the allergy restrictions of one of my kids. The tacos were superb! Menu was the most like a cantina in Mexico that I've ever encountered in a 'Mexican' restaurant in the U.S. Restrooms were clean enough to use. The staff was as happy to take orders in simple English as in Spanish, even though the menu was in Spanish. There were a lot of signs for beer specials, so I'm not sure if it would be a good place to take the kids for dinner, but it was a great lunch!

Seeking a hole-in-the-wall - truly authentic- Mexican restaurant? Los Portales is the spot. I was meeting a friend for dinner and decided to go out on a whim and randomly pick a place. Random, I tell you. I saw that Los Portales had one review, but it was a good one. The restaurant itself is located in a not so attractive area, but try to look past that fact when pulling into the parking spot. I honestly debated whether or not we should stay, but we decided to give it a try. The place, though small, was filled with lively folk. There was a group of guys glued to the soccer game on tv while on the other side of the place sat a family chowing down on fresh chips and salsa. While looking through the menu, we quickly noticed that everything was in Spanish. Everything. Really made me wish I would have paid more attention in my Spanish class in high school. I'm telling you, everything about this place was authentic. The food was delicious and incredibly affordable. I was able to eat two large tacos for less than $5. Our waitress, even though she had difficulty communicating with us, was very attentive and helpful. I want to reiterate that this place isn't in the most glamorous part of Indy. Please don't let this detour you away, though. It's definitely worth the stop.

It's in the same little corner strip (on the SW corner of W. 71st and Michigan Rd) where Diarra's Cuisine is, and where Mix 5 Iraqi used to be. From the outside, it looks like a hole-in-the-wall. But the inside is nicer than the outside leads you to believe. The dining area is clean and tidy, and not over-done with signage. Two TV's up on the walls, plus a digital juke-box with touch screen. Standard Mexican fare, aimed at a Mexican clientele, but the menu is bilingual, and the waitress/cashier speaks English well. On the weekends they serve "(something) mole". Separate men's/women's restrooms. The men's room was clean and tidy. Decent Mexican restaurants are ubiquitous in Indy, so it's not worth going too far out of your way for, just for that fact, but I would not be hesitant to take a date or family here for lunch or dinner. The chips appeared to be made in-house. They were double-layer, which is nice, but they were a tad too oily and a tad too salty. The salsa seemed to be made in-house and was good. I had a chicken torta (sandwich) with everything, and it was very tasty, with grilled chunks of chicken breast. A nice touch was the avocado slices. I would rate the food quality at 4.5 (out of 5) stars, and the value at 4.5 (out of 5) for the good price. $10 minimum on credit card purchases.

This is the real thing and I feel transported to Mexico. You walk thru beads to the restroom! How foreign does that feel? If you're taking Spanish you can work on your language skills in this little lovely restaurant. This is my favorite place for authentic tacos. Staff is wonderful.

This was my first visit to Los Portales, and I had a good experience. The restaurant is in a run down strip mall and at this time it is the only business open in the strip mall. There were several people in the restaurant when I visited, but the only English I heard was from me and a five year old girl. The girl helped the waiter take my order. The menu was almost all in Spanish but I was able to manage. I had a burrito which was very good for a small restaurant like this. I also had pork tacos which I would say were average. The food tasted very authentic and was very fresh. The only downside was that I had to wait a long time to pay after I ate. The staff was very friendly. I will be back and get the burrito again, or maybe a torta. I visited the restaurant at night and I did not feel any danger.

One of the better tasting Mexican restaurants in Indy. Great tortas! Definitely a hole in in the wall vs. nice restuarant but when we want taste over ambiance we go here. And not that this this makes me an expert but I'm Mexican and grew up in LA so I've tried a few good spots.
