First time eating here this evening. The staff is incredibly polite and the food was absolutely amazing. The the Bourbon cream corn was the best side dish I've ever eaten. This will become a frequent spot for me.

Chef James. Friendly guy. His Place menu. Pleasing to the tummy. Love chicken and waffles. Pork tips on a pool of saucy goodness. Nice. Don't miss the attention and food offered at His Place. Simple choice. Eat here.

The best smoked ribs I have been able to find in Indy. Dry rubbed porky goodness fired in an actual smoker not oven baked with liquid smoke. Greens and mac and cheese worthy of such great ribs. And by all means save room for the sweet potato cheese cake. Simple and sweet and slightly decadent.

This place was fantastic. The service was great, the food even better. If you like southern/soul food, this is a place you've got to try. The meatloaf was the best I have ever tasted. The collared greens were great, and the banana pudding was a great topper. The owner came to our table and spoke with us about his passion for the food, and is as pleasant a guy as you will ever meet. My friends and I are going to go His Place as a regular weekly dinner.

I've tried their fried catfish once and it was decent but their ginormous chocolate chip cookies are what keeps me coming back! One of my favorite chocolate chip cookies in the state and I am hard to please when it comes to my chocolate chip cookies. Unfortunately many times that I go they are mysteriously out.

My family and I have been eating at His Place since their last location. Very very good food! Great service and a very clean environment. We have eaten the whole menu collectively, it is outstanding! FRIDAY NIGHT FISH DINNERS: Fish, fries, slaw, choice of bread and a drink......$8.99!!!!

This is a local business that takes extra care to get it right at a reasonable price. Ribs, collard greens, mac n cheese are my favorite combination. But home fried chicken is awesome too. And sweet potato pie is yum. We go there a couple times each month.

His place is great food place! I go there at least 4 times a month. From going to Sunday dinners to calling in to carry out, service always come with a smile!! I love fish fry Friday's and I love the lunch specials they are currently running. The "Uptown's" are very good and they always introduce new items to the menu! Their deserts are great and the atmosphere is very family oriented!

If you know the area around 30th & Shadeland Avenue on Indy's Northeastside, then it likely won't surprise you that His Place Eatery is an ultra-casual diner that I'd be tempted to call divey but it is actually a clean and well kept restaurant. I'm guessing that Chef James "Mackie" Jones and his wife Shawn Marie Jones have gotten quite the deal on the place as their hours are surprisingly limited. Be sure to check them out before heading out because there's not a night they stay open past 8pm and even that's only on Fridays and Saturdays. His Place Eatery is a place where you get down home cookin' or Southern-style cuisine. Signature meals include such traditional fare as fried bologna, fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken & waffles (he reportedly spent 3 years perfecting this recipe), beef manhattan, and quite a few others. They also serve up sandwiches and then more traditional entrees that include two sides. I arrived this evening with a planned group of six that grew to a party of nine. There's a notice that parties of eight or more will have a 15% gratuity added, though it looked like this didn't happen to us - probably because we weren't all one party. His Place looks like it's an old Waffle House restaurant. It's a run-down free-standing building that hasn't so much been renovated as it has simply been cleaned up. They don't have any clearly marked accessible spots, though you can see where two spots were accessible. The symbols have simply faded and there's no metal sign marking the spots. They have a rather casual wheelchair ramp at a curb cut - it's not technically ADA compliant, but it works just fine. There's two sets of doors and both are pretty light and workable. As you enter, you face a sort of lunch counter type setting with two dining areas on both sides of it. I believe one side had some booths, though it seemed like the restaurant was mostly tables. Our party had actually called ahead and it was clear the crew was ready for us even when our party grew in size. You can eat for a reasonable price at His Place - signature options are mostly less than $10 with a couple less than $5. The entrees range from $10-12 plus drink. My drink was only $1.79 - it seems like everybody charges more than $2 these days and that really made me smile. While I've been avoiding red meat, ever so often I get a craving and decided to go with it tonight. I ordered a meatloaf special because the idea of a homecooked meal just rocked my heart. It's smoked over hickory wood, topped with pepper bacon and served with a homemade sweet n' spicy sauce. You get two sides - I chose mashed potatoes (hold the gravy) and cole slaw. I also ordered cornbread (you got bread with it). I ordered my usual unsweetened tea. The serving size was plentiful without being obnoxiously large. The meatloaf was quite delicious. I tend to not be too experimental, but I really liked this meatloaf. It was worth my splurge. I got a little nervous looking at the mashed potatoes, but they were also quite good and delivered as ordered. The cole slaw was definitely creamy - probably my least favorite part of the meal, but still good. Iced tea refills were offered openly and I was especially impressed when someone who'd ordered a drink without ice but got it with ice got a replacement without hesitation. Nikki was the server. She completely rocked it. She was helpful, enthusiastic, friendly and just a delight. When she made a mistake, she apologized. When she was a touch slow (which was actually never, but she thought so), she owned it. She was the kind of server you go back for and ask for by name. Yeah, she was that good. His Place, and yes there's a subtle yet acknowledged element of faith in the establishment, isn't quite a five-star joint but it's an incredibly good diner with a casual yet comfortable atmosphere and super friendly service. While the neighborhood isn't the best, it's simply a diverse, working class area and I wouldn't hesitate to go there during their business hours. My dining companions for the most part praised the food, though I did hear in one case that a spicy sauce wasn't really that spicy. They do also have very limited options for vegetarians and offer catering.

I really like this place. The fried chicken dinner was fabulous, corn bread is great. The cole slaw was a mayo base but lovely..not my moms though so it was just short of being a favorite. The potatoes and gravy made us feel at home. Fried chicken salad was tasty. Stop in here for some good eats

Omg y'all. The food is AMAZING! I ordered the fried fish entree with collard greens and mac. My husband ordered the smoked meatloaf with collard greens and creamed corn. Both meals were to die for and at a great price. I normally put hot sauce on my fish but I had a dilemma this time. My first bite (without hot sauce) was so delicious and seasoned to perfection. I ended up putting hot sauce on them anyway cuz that's just my routine but again, it was already perfect. The meatloaf is probably the best I have ever tasted. It's up there with my mom's, definitely. The greens were the main thing I went in for. I love me some greens but you just can't get them everywhere so I researched soul food restaurants and luckily His Place is 5 min from my new house. Anyways, try this place. You won't be disappointed. The service is also amazing. And our waitress was able to "con" us into getting some banana pudding to go. Of course, it was spectacular as well and we had zero regrets. My husband and I can't wait to go back and be regulars.

This place is serving the ultimate comfort food. I had smoked meatloaf, Mac and cheese, greens and cornbread. Everything tastes like it had the same love Mom puts in. The servers were great too, very friendly and attentive. I can't wait to visit again next time through Indy.

Went there for lunch today because of the good reviews and was not disappointed.. We had the fried catfish and let me tell you 2 filets might not seem like alot but it is.. It was soo good and the mac and cheese was some of the best I have ever had.. The green beans were delicious and so were the collard greens.. Everything had such amazing flavor.. The service was impeccable and the whole staff was just so very pleasant.. I will be going back.

What a wonderful experience we had at His Place. The staff was nice, the food was good, and the restaurant was clean. We had their fried chicken with a side of Mac and cheese and cream corn and their fried tilapia with a side of mashed potatoes and spaghetti (you read correctly). For desert we had banana pudding. All of which were excellent.
(5)Mr. B.
We had the meatloaf, catfish, mac & cheese and cornbread all delicious and favorful. Can't wait to try more items on my next visit.
(4)Ronnie W.
I went in on fish Friday. Ordered the broiled tilapia, comes with enough French fries for a crowd and a side of coleslaw. The seasoning on the fish was very good, I would probably get more slaw next time and skip the fries. The wait staff is very nice here and the food came out hot. Oh, and they have Monster Energy drinks, just incase their coffee isn't strong enough to get your day going.

Excellent food....Ate the pork chops..chicken and waffles with green beans and Mac n cheese with greens..... Excellent service also will return.

Ultimately the best place hands down for amazing soul food!! This gem needs to expand its business or be put somewhere more mainstream! If you aren't a frequent on the east side, you probably wouldn't know about it. Now that we have ate there, we WILL be going east exclusively for this place from out west. I ordered the fried chicken entree with a side of Mac & Cheese and greens with corn bread. It was everything that I could have ever wanted and more!! Mouth watering, literally. There were fireworks in my mouth. As we got to the car and left, we were going on about how amazing the taste was that lingered in our mouths. Lol Everything was to perfection. My husband got the fried cat fish with spaghetti, greens and corn bread. He can't stop going on either. He tried my chicken and was in love with it too. He's sitting here goin on as I'm typing. Haha Our 5 year old daughter got the grilled cheese with Mac and Cheese and spaghetti. She cleared her plate and is ready to go back again!! We all ended with a peach cobbler/ to go. We threw in some whipped cream when we got home. The cobbler was crumbly and steaming hot when we got home. OMG. Pure amazing. There is not one negative thing to say about this place. Even the staff are the sweetest people ever; which makes the experience even more all the better. They are truly genuinely sweet people. I'm also I white woman, married to a black man with a mixed race child. I felt so comfortable and easy going here being I was the only white person there!! Lol lol Anyways, all aspects of this place is the absolute best. My family can't wait to go back. I would have posted our plates; as I usually do. But, I literally didn't think about it once my beautiful plate of amazing southern aroma was in my face. Maybe next time??

After all the other reviews praising His Place I feel like I went on a day where there was a substitute cook. The food was awful. I ordered a turkey Manhattan. The gravy had to be straight from a can. It was bland and flavorless. The "dirty" mashed potatoes tasted like there was no seasoning or butter. I was extremely disappointed. I gave them 2 stars for good service and excellent banana pudding.

Authentic home cooked soul food period! The bourbon corn was the real deal!!. Service was a they make u feel like you spending a 100 dollars a plate

This is one of the best places in Indy to get good home cooked soul foods. I frequent His Place often an I always try something different. I don't think I've yet to find something on the menu that disappointed me in even the slightest. I especially love the fried catfish filets with some hot yummy macaroni, and perfect mash potatoes with the skins still inside. A great restaurant isn't 100% about it's food, you need the service to back it up. His Place's owner James is one of the most likeable restaurant owners I've come to know. James and his amazing staff are always happy and willing to give you a good time when stopping in.

Omg!! The food here is oh so yummy! I ordered the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, candied yams & the chicken dumplings! Hands down best fried chicken I've had in Indiana!! Our server Gregory was tremendously helpful & courteous & we enjoyed our meal here! We will definitely make the drive to come back & dine!

Wow, this place was great. Sweetest server and friendly staff all around. We were there for Sunday dinner and it wasn't a big crowd. It was hard to decide what to get because the food at all the tables looked great. I had a Turkey Manhattan (hot turkey sandwich) and it was very yummy. I wish the potatoes could have been a little tastier and that they hadn't used the heel of the bread. I got banana pudding to go. It was good, but not great. Still, give this place a try. It was a great value and really yummy.

We come here every time we head to Indianapolis. We love this place... We have tried many of their menu items. My favorite hands down are the pork chops... I love them both grilled or fried!!! They are what I look forward to... The ribs though are off the hook!!! The Mac and cheese is great, so are the green beans... But nothing can compare to the greens. I usually get double on the greens... I can eat those by themselves... I don't need nothing with them... Yummy!!! Never had a bad experience here and the chef is super nice!!!
(5)Trey L.
When it comes to soul food I think this place is up there with country kitchen. I what their and ordered pork chops. They were seasoned well and the sides were not bad either.
(4)Scott C.
All things considered, this place is excellent. I'm a sucker for chicken and waffles and His Place doesn't disappoint. The waffles just melt in my mouth. I literally have to force myself to slow down while eating...which doesn't always work. That's a testament to the chef. Meanwhile, the venue is homey, the staff is friendly, and the owner "gets it". He will always make the rounds and get to know his customers, which is fantastic. The Turkey Manhattan wasn't my favorite, but I certainly ate it all. The sides are always winners, weather we're talking beans or Mac n' cheese or bourbon cream corn. You won't leave hungry...especially if you order to chocolate chip cookies or banana pudding for desert.

Warning: Long Post Ahead. To keep it short: Go eat here. You will be SO glad you did. --------------------------------------------------Â---------- I don't know what else to say but WOW. His Place has some of the best food I've eaten in maybe my entire life. My boyfriend and I have talked about going here a thousand times and finally got a chance, I am so upset we hadn't gone sooner! I ordered the chicken and waffles with Mac&Cheese and the creamed corn (aka a TON of food). It was all so good my poor boyfriend almost had to roll me out. The chicken was perfectly crispy and not greasy which can be the case with fried chicken. The waffle was soft and pillowy on the inside and wasn't overly sweet, with the maple syrup it was an amazing compliment to the chicken. I'm not even sure where to start with the mac&cheese. Every time I order mac and cheese this is what I imagine and I am so glad I've finally found a place that can deliver. The cheese is delicately balanced and stays creamy, it coats each perfectly cooked noodle so every bite is better than the last. The creamed corn was my least favorite dish and I still ate more than half of it. My boyfriend ordered the meatloaf. That was definitely the star dish of the night. Our waiter recommended it and I am SO glad he did. The owner smokes the meatloaf for 3 hours and you can absolutely tell he is a pro. The flavor was insane. The meatloaf was the juiciest I have had in my entire life. Honestly, who ever thought you could use the word 'juicy' to describe meatloaf? Well now you can. We ended with the peach cobbler and banana pudding. The cobbler came highly recommended and lived up to expectations. The peaches were soft and sweet while the crust stood up and offered that crunch and it had the perfect cinnamony kick. The banana pudding didn't disappoint either, I don't know what he does but it is so creamy and rich with the wonderful crunch of vanilla wafers and little banana slice surprises. I honestly could go on forever about the deliciousness of the food. Just go, meet the kind friendly staff and enjoy all of the wonderful food.

His Place is good, but could be better. I liked the fact the mash on their famous Turkey Manhattan was real rather than boxed. The dark brown gravy threw me off, as I expected a lighter sauce. Still, it was tasty, if a little salty. I wished for less salt in the gravy and more in the potatoes. The cole slaw was amazing, however...creamy with a little zest, and the perfect amount of crunch vs. wilt to the cabbage. I got the oft-mentioned peach cobbler to go. Flavor was spot-on, but the peaches were overdone and seemed canned rather than fresh or frozen. Plus there was WAY too much "juice" in the to go container. By the time I got back to the hotel the crust was super soggy. I'd probably give this outfit another try, as I'm often in the area on business and I get tired of chains. The service was friendly and attentive, and I enjoyed talking to the chef as he made his rounds, so no complaints there at all. But, definitely... minor attention to food details could make His Place a stellar eatery.

I have ate at His Place Eatery few times, first time I was a little apprehensive. I was new to Indy and was warned that area of town is a bit sketchy, I drove by saw a barber shop, and some pimped out rides in the lot. Nothing that would scare me away from having some soul food. It was a Sunday and seemed pretty empty when we got sat, but we were taken aback at how many people came in to get to go orders, at least 15-20 people. The chef presented the food to us, he was genuinely friendly. I can say that we were delighted, I ordered Turkey Manhattan, macaroni, and the other person with me ordered Ribs, with a side of green beans, cornbread, and macaroni. We shared some of our sides, but once I tasted my Turkey Manhattan there was no looking back...plate was licked clean within 5 minutes. I was over all pleased, my thoughts and feelings remain the same to this day.

Don't miss eating at this place! You are in for a treat if you like delicious fresh food. Sad to say that I am from out of town and found this place. I would eat here all of the time!
(5)Steven G.
Great place to go for the soul food experience. Being from the west coast, I've never gotten to try chicken and waffles before and I was not disappointed. The sweet taste of the waffles and syrup, combined with the spiciness of the hot sauce, and the good meaty taste of chicken worked so well together; everything was cooked perfectly. My dad got the meatloaf which was great as well. I'm not usually a big fan of meatloaf but they know how to do it right here. Again cooked right and made with a tasty homemade sauce, not just ketchup. Our server Jordan did a great job. He always was friendly, made conversation with us, and made sure our drinks were filled. The chef actually came out and talked to us for awhile too. Everyone's friendly here and contributes to the whole soul food experience. Highly recommended.

I travel all over the central US for work and everyday at lunch I hop on yelp and pick out a place to eat based upon the ratings. I never write a review myself, just use it as a tool for some good eats that aren't fast food. Well, I'm writing a review, because this place is AWESOME. The service is outstanding, they greet every customer as they walk in. Gregory was my server and he literally might be the nicest guy on earth. He honestly made me feel like I've known him for years and I've never been here before. He recommended a drink called the "Uptown" which is their variation of an Arnold Palmer. How good is it? I bought a gallon to take back home to Chicago. The Food??? In retrospect I wish I had ordered the whole menu and brought it back too!! I had the turkey sandwich ( I forget the actual name on the menu) and it was epically delicious. I briefly met Chef, who I assume is the boss man. Hey boss man, keep on doing what you're doing. This restaurant is what every lunch spot should aspire to be, but will most likely never achieve. Do yourself a favor. Eat here.

Took from my friends from Cincinnati there. Very good food and friendly staff. Would recommend checking this place out if you like comfort food!
