I went here with the Indy International Supper Club for dinner and had a smattering of all sorts of things: Imperial rice (with chicken, cheese, and olives), black beans and rice, mojito pork with onions, some type of braised beef with peppers, veggie lasagna, and plantains. Holy moly, it was a lot but it was delicious. I loved the Imperial Rice and the plantains. I probably could have eaten my weight in plantains they were so scrumptious. I can't speak much to the "normal" service but our "special party" service was very nice and my water came with a lime. Nice and fresh tasting!

3rd time back in as many months - lunch at prime time on a Friday. Wish was closer to work/home.... I just love this place. Family owned and operated. Great Cuban coffee. Me and the much better half started w/ an appetizer; split 2 empanadas - a beef and a chicken. Soo good. And shared a dinner plate of puerco fritas w/ yellow rice and plantains. Had to wait a bit (as freshly prepared and only one waitperson) but well worth it. [insert.... ummm, ummmmm...icon here] Cooked pork chunks - then deep fried. Exquisite porcine goodness w/ garlicky, fruity mojo sauce to dip on the side! ( Mi Dios! Why did I choose to share?! ) We skipped the iron beer today and chose a pineapple soda. Great choice - refreshing and light. $23 all in w/ tip. If you crave Cuban cuisine and not planning to be in Florida anytime soon - vamos! scratch some gravel and get over to the NE corner of 38th and Moller pronto!!

Really good and authentic Cuban Food! We love the Vaca Frita, bistec empanizado, cafe con leche, and the cheese flan! But everything we've tried is delicious! So glad that we've found this place in Indy!!!
(5)Christine K.
Tastes just like Cuban food commonly found in Miami. I got the ropa vieja and my date got the roasted pork, both amazing. Rice and beans nothing special but perfectly cooked. Try the coconut flan! Service was by a very nice lady that gave us suggestions and was pretty patient despite our indecisiveness.

Some friends and I went for lunch and were very pleased. Service was attentive and friendly - we all asked for recommendations on what to order and the waitress was very helpful and guided our orders expertly. I had the Ropa Veja - a beef dish in a zesty stew-like sauce. The beef was shredded and tender, the sauce complemented the meat perfectly. They had several rice options, I had some of the best black beans and rice - so savory. As part of my dish I opted for the plantains (instead of the veggie option) - they were perfect, be sure to eat them while hot for the best effect, the heat brings out the banana-like sweetness and flavor while the firm starchy texture remains. One of my friends raved about the cubano sandwich - one of the best sandwiches he's ever had. It looked really good and is a nice price for lunch. There are a lot of items to choose from on the menu, daily specials, a kids menu and even breakfast. This is a must try for any adventurous diner!

We went to try Cuban sandwiches for the first time (we had both heard how good they are) at the last minute we both ordered empanadas as well one beef, one mango. The sandwiches were just alright, the emapanadas AMAZING!!!! I will go back just for those!!! They are $2 a piece and I could just have 2 of them for a meal. Very highly recommended.

We stopped here after picking my car up, my husband had eaten here before and after having the food I was kinda mad he had never brought me here before ! we had the pork and the plantains....oh my gosh the plantains. I could have eaten 10 more. Friendly staff and nice relaxed atmosphere. Thinking about going back during the World Cup should be fun. Please try this place it was FANTASTIC!
(5)Ashley J.
I went to lunch here today and the food was great! Not only that, but our waitress was very nice and knowledgable. We had never eaten Cuban food before and she was a great help when it came to picking out our entrees. I had the first pork dish on the menu--I'm not sure what it was called, but it was good. I had it with moro--black beans and rice and the plantains. As an added bonus it came with some fried pork skin! Try it! I promise it was nothing like the kind you see at the gas station. Overall, me and my company enjoyed our lunch. Check it out!
(4)Anita S.
I love this place!! Been looking for real Cuban coffee finally found it!! The Cuban sandwich was beautiful!!!!
(5)Joe H.
I had a wonderful chicken dish with rice. And a great Café Cubano
(4)Bianca R.
The staff is friendly, the food has improved. wouldn't really recommend it.

If you want Cuban food...this is the place in Indianapolis. I have tried others and they come nowhere near this place. I am a cuban transpant into Indianapolis I love Indianapolis, but i missed my cuban food until I found this place 1 week ago. I had what I consider a traditional cuban meal...Masas de Puerco, Moros, and Yuca with mojito for the pork and the yuca. For dessert I had Flan and a shot of cuban coffee (some people in Miami call it the "cuban speed ball). Next time I will try their Arroz con Pollo or Yellow Rice and Chicken with fried ripe plantains.
(5)Jan S.
Wonderful Cuban food. Started with the Tostones (which were perfect) and the Beef Empanadas, also delicious. My husband had the Vaca Frita with Moros & I had the Churrasco with Black Beans and rice, both of us had maduros. The food was excellent! We had the coconut Flan for dessert and cafe cubano. It was a fabulous meal and our waitress was terrific. I definitely recommend Havana Cafe. I lived in Miami for 5 years and this is some of the best Cuban food I've ever had!

They love Billy Ocean here. Love him. When we walked into Havana Cafe Carribean Queen(no more love on the run) was blasting. And now its been stuck in my head all day. In honor on Mr. Ocean and Havana Cafe:my review, inspired by the track listings of Billy Ocean's 1984 powerhouse "Suddenly" 1."Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"-Havana cafe is run by a friendly lady from the Carribean. The New York Times wrote an article on her and her Hoosier establishment. 2."Mystery Lady" -the menu and lunch board specials are kinda confusing...pictures or brief descriptions would be very helpful 3."Syncopation"- the service is scattered and inconsistent 4."The Long and Winding Road"- 38th street is a mess:avoid and try alternate routes 5."Loverboy" -a handsome man with a mustache works there. He was nice but seemed frazzled serving just the two of us. 6."Lucky Man"- I felt fortunate to find this little gem. It was easily the best Cuban food I've had in Indianapolis. 7."Dancefloor"- Havana Cafe is small consisting of 4-5 table tops. Its perfect for lunch or an impromptu dinner date, but you might want to reconsider taking a large group here. 8."If I Should Lose You"-Its not hard to find, but its not the easiest either if you are unfamiliar with the west side. 9."Suddenly" -The food is rich. You can get full in the blink of an eye. I had the piping hot Cuban. It was loaded with ham and pork placed betwix some kind of unique bread. The mustard and pickles did an excellent job cutting through the fattiness creating a most satisfying sandwich. and now for dessert...... youtube.com/watch?v=dkXV…

The reviews for Havana Cafe have been mixed on Yelp and on Urbanspoon. None of them are all that current. My husband and I were there this evening and I can tell you that the positive reviews and comments are absolutely accurate! The food, service, and price were spot-on. Don't let the outside fool you...give it a try!
(5)Luis R.
The food is great and reasonably priced. I agree with the comment about the stained tablecloths. That's really my only complaint. Would definitely visit again.
(4)Helen P.
Best plantains ever! Huge portions of very tasty food. Delicious tamarind fruit drink. What a wonderful introduction to Cuban food.
(4)Sarah D.
Fantastic!! I had arroz con pollo it was awesome.. Just like my husbands family makes it..
(5)Lorand M.
Very good food...friendly..albeit spotty service. Prices are more than reasonable...excellent cuban coffee. So nice to see Indy getting more and more of these little gems. While not an expert on the authenticness (word?) never-the-less...terrific tasting food...obviously made with care !Now..if they would only offer freshly muddled mojitos !
(5)Brittany L.
I have had Cuban food several times, in Miami and Key West, and I was a little disappointed by what I had here. This may be because this little restaurant is owned by a nice lady from El Salvador. I loved my fried plantains-so hard to find in the midwest!...the sauce they were served with, a mixture of ketchup and mayo...while perhaps traditional? was gross. The black beans were good but lacked the richness of flavor I have had in Cuban black beans in other locations. My entree was pork chunks which again, lacked the depth that I was expecting and were flavored mainly by grilled onions and their own fat. The rice was completely bland...just a pile on the plate to take up space. HOWEVER the pupusas and little quesadilla type things from Central America were REALLY tasty. My partner's shredded beef in sauce dish was good as well. Perhaps because we were here with a large group the food wasn't presented as it usually is. To emphasize this: the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Overall, I was underwhelmed. The interior is pleasant enough, painted in bright colors and murals of the beach. I will definitely return to try some other dishes, but I wonder if this place wouldn't be better named as something besides a Cuban restaurant. I would love to see some empanadas like the ones I had in Costa Rica, and more of the owner's native Salvadoran food.
(3)Doug M.
Absolutely fantastic food at a fair price, but slow service. That's not to say it was bad service by any stretch, I just wouldn't come here if I were in a hurry. There was only one woman working the dining room, and while she was extremely helpful (which is important when most everything is written in Spanish) and very cheerful, she wasn't the world's most efficient The food is very rich and enjoyable. Each dish has lots of flavor and spice, and feels very "homemade". There's nothing worse than going to an ethnic restaurant and finding that the food has been prepackaged and/or "blandified" to suit American taste buds. This is not the case here. I asked the waitress for a recommendation and I was blown away by my meal. Don't be looking for mojito's though. They have a selection of beer and wine, but not everyone's favorite Cuban cocktail. Overall, it was a great experience from a hole in the wall I might not have tried if not for other positive reviews on the place.

My wife and I love Cuban food, so we regretfully decided to try this place. For the food, the Cuban sandwich had a foul odor, was soaked in grease, and tasted rotten and the chicken over rice tasted old and overcooked. For the service, it was slow, unfriendly, and the waitress seemed disturbed when I used the 10% off Yelp coupon for "checking in". For the premises, they were worn down and dirty. Even when we expressed our dissatisfaction, the waitress could have cared less, but made sure to scour over me while I filled out the tip. There are plenty of other great restaurants in the area, so I'm surprised that this one is still in business.
(1)Jackie H.
My food (pork chops) was really dry and salty. The garlic chicken has way too many garlic - you can kill a vampire! Their Oxtail is good though. I might come back just for the oxtail.

Full disclosure...I'm writing this review for self interest reasons ONLY. This should be an absolutely jam packed place from open to close but, because its in Indy, and Cubans didn't immigrate to the US to wind up in Indiana, the place was half full on a Saturday night. This needs to change, STAT. My wife and I started off with a beef empanada and chicken empanada. The chicken was juicy and the crust flakey and not overdone. We also split a Cuban chicken soup that was to die for. Rich, hearty and seasoned to perfection. Again, the shredded chicken was just perfect. Oh soooo gooood. We split 2 dinners, the Ox tail stew and a yellow rice, cheese and chicken casserole thingy. The Ox tail was incredible. The meat was rich and flavorful and plenty of of it. It just fell off the bone, and the tomato stew juice was so rich from sitting in the fatty meat. Oh man oh man. Even the side of veggies that came with it were buttery and fantastic. A little over cooked for my taste, but I like a crunch. The casserole had olives in it which gave it a little special something' but I don't recall the menu mentioning it. Anyway, it too was quit good. Service was good but this is not a quick grab a bite place. Picture Tony Montagna's mom in the kitchen cooking family favorites from scratch. It takes some well worthy time. They also applied for their liquor license, so that should add an interesting element at some point. All in all, a fantastic find...A+
(5)Jake W.
Went with my wife on a Saturday night. We were the only people there for our entire visit, except for one guy who got take-out. Service was unfriendly and incredibly slow, especially considering we were the only ones there. Glasses remained empty until we asked for refills. We had to ask for a to-go box, and for our check, after she cleaned our table. She acted as if our (very normal) requests for one or two refills, a box, and check were burdensome, The food: beef and chicken empanadas were nothing to write home about, sort of greasy and lacking in flavor. Only the cheese and aquava were good - unique combination of flavors. Ham croquettes were decent, not great. Yuka fritas were perfect. Cuban sandwich had authentic bread, but old-tasting roasted pork made it only so-so. Obviously our experience does not match that of most reviewers, but we definitely won't be back.

If you're willing to drive through a rougher neighborhood for some Cuban, this is your place!!! The food is so amazing! I got oxtail and to those of you not used to having this, you're missing out. It was cooked perfectly. The meat was so tender and juicy and the sauce was perfect. I also got a strawberry smoothie. The ultimate comfort food.

While Havana Cafe may not feel like you're in steamy Miami on a cold, snowy Indianapolis day, the food will simply melt those winter blues away. Plus, you don't have to spend that $$$ on a flight ticket hundreds of miles away just to get some authentic Cuban food. The decor inside is minimal and simplistic. I think it'd be romantic if they installed those globe string lights since it feels a little dim inside when it's gloomy out. Interior design set aside, it's the food that makes or breaks a place's reputation. I normally order water at most places and guess what? It comes in a stemmed glass with those ice cubes with a hole down the center with a lime wedge and no floaties. I can't tell you how much I hate seeing floaties in my water. Our server was very polite and even gave a description of all the rice options before I even had to ask. I wish I liked Cuban sandwiches, but I'm not a pickle.mustard.mayo kind of person. If I omitted those condiments, it would turn into a ham and cheese sandwich. Kind of pointless to order one, so I chose the Vaca Frita with Moro rice and plantains. It was a hearty portion of shredded beef nicely seasoned with a nice lemony tang that wasn't too powerful. The saltiness of the beef worked well with the sweet plantains. The rice was perfectly cooked, not dry or overly wet. I also took a small bite of my boyfriend's Cuban sandwich. Nice crunch to the bread and I didn't really mind the pickles and yellow mustard. He also had a side of yucca fries with a ketchup mayo dip. The fries were actually quite good, not dry as cardboard like some places. It came out right from the fryer piping hot and crispy. Service was on point - no empty glasses and she frequently checked on us. Prices are reasonable considering the quality and the portion size making you feel full before you leave. If you're ever on the Westside, be sure to stop by Havana Cafe to grab a bite if your tastes buds feel like exploring out of their comfort zone. I'm sure the flavors and textures won't disappoint!

Simply amazing. I was thinking Chinese, Japanese, sushi or burgers when out of nowhere yelp finds this place. My meal was excellent, the restaurant clean, staff is beautiful and friendly. I felt right at home and was well served to stop in. From the first bite to the last, delicious, yum yum yum. What a surprise to find this gem in the middle of Indiana USA. My stay here is short but I plan to return for more yum yum. I love the Latin people, culture , family values and their food. Don't wait, life is short, so get here and enjoy, you will not regret it.

While the drive to 38th Street maybe a bit of a stretch to some, it is much cheaper than a flight to Miami or the Caribbean to enjoy Cuban food. Havana Cafe has you covered. This quaint family owned and operated restaurant boasts a large and extensive traditional menu, including drinks. While there is no separate gluten free menu, one of the best things about Cuban dishes, is that a majority of them are naturally gluten free. Although, sadly, the empanadas are a no-go, but there are plenty of other options. If you are unsure and haven't ventured into this particular realm of cuisine, fear not as the waitress is able to guide you into the great unknown and can point out popular dishes by categories. As for the food, the portions are hefty. The meats, especially the vaca frita, are cooked and flavored well. And the plantains, finally a place that knows how to cook them, are alone worth a visit. If you're looking to expand your taste buds, and enjoy a good Cuban meal, make sure to stop buy.

Superb. Who would have thought you could find an authentic Cuban restaurant in the middle of Indianapolis? Places like these revive my faith in humanity and my hope that Indianapolis can develop a good international food hub. The area around Lafayette Square has become quite the center for international cuisine--Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, to name a few, and now Cuban. Having eaten at many of the best Cuban places that Miami has to offer, I have to say that Havana Cafe is authentic and excellent in all respects. The interior decoration reminds me of places I've been to in various neighborhoods in Miami. The owners are Miami transplants, and they know how to do Cuban food right. The ropa vieja--excellent. The oxtails? Divine. Side dishes of rice and beans and plantains made me think I was having a meal on a sugar plantation in old Havana. Prices are reasonable, service is great, and most of all, the food is excellent and authentic. Run, do not walk, to Havana Cafe.
(5)Angel R.
Had yellow rice with frijoles negro & guineos amarillo y pernil. Also had empanadas de carne & it was absolutely fabulous. True Caribbean food which lacks in the City Of Indianapolis. Glad finally found one. Great food at Havana Cafe.
(5)Ashley P.
Who knew a slice of Cuba could be had without a passport here in our very own Indy? The ambiance from the traditional decor to the music playing whisk you away for an evening bursting with flavor. The menu offers a number of drinks ranging from your choice of bottled or canned soda, traditional juices, to imported favorites in addition to their beer and wine selections. The waitress was kind enough to bring me samples of the Passion Fruit and Tamarind juices to help me decide. Tamarind was the clear winner and came out in a HUGE glass. The waitress kindly walked me through the menu, patiently telling me the most popular dishes by category. I ended up ordering her favorite, fried pork pieces with plantains and white rice. I started with a guava and cheese empanada, and that with the tamarind juice was a delicious sugar overload! My entree was beautifully plated, generously portioned, and delicious. My only concern with this place is the awful distraction of the blinking sign that was right outside the window of where we sat. The white blink akin to lightning made for a bit of visual discomfort that took away from the experience. Otherwise, it was a fabulous meal and I look forward to returning.
(4)Audrey B.
Wonderful service...the outside appearance would make you think twice about coming in but I'm glad I did!!! The food was amazing and the employees were very friendly. It was my first time trying Cuban food and they offered suggestions and were very helpful! I will def make this a regular place that I eat at!
(5)Nancy P.
If I could add a 6th star I would! My #28 meal was excellent and the place was a breath of fresh air for Indianapilis. The food was prepared very well and gave me a sense of authenticism when the woman of mature stature from behind the scences brought out my meal who seemingly did not speak a lot of English. From the inside, glasses to restroom everything was clean and polished. This is a great find for me, one I want to repeat.

This is my second visit, as my first was during the International Supper club hosted by Alex, who goes out of his way to bring the best of Indy's cultural food experiences to our bellies. I tried hard to remember what we had on the menu before and soon realized it was some kind of beef dish. The prices for entrees were above average for lunch, so I wanted to make sure to make the right selection and savor each bite. My date had the Arroz Imperial (Rice casserole filled with cheese and chicken) and I ordered the Vaca Frita (shredded beef with onion, garlic & lemon). Everything was seasoned so well and very juicy. I insisted my companion order the plantains and enjoyed the experience of his discovering new foods. We had so much on our plates we took it home and destroyed it in the middle of the night. Next time I'll try the Ropa Vieja, or empanadas, or... too many choices. I must go here more often!
(4)Jeff W.
We tried the papas rellanos and the guava and cheese empanadas appetizers. Both were excellent. I had the Cuban sandwich and she had the Cuban version of carnitas. The cubano bread was perfect. The sandwich was awesome. The carnitas were also perfect. Flan and Cuban coffee finished off a fabulous meal. All thumbs up. Will be back :)
(5)Kelley R.
This place was awesome! So good and friendly staff. The special that day was so good!
(5)Melissa M.
Small restaurant in a small strip mall. Service can be a little slow, but there was only one server the night we were there. My dad had the chicken fricasee which he said was very good. I had the ropa vieja which was also good. My mistake was ordering the yellow rice because I swear that it was the Goya boxed rice. I should've stuck with the white rice & black beans. It was good, but definitely not the best Cuban food I've had.
(4)Sarah F.
What a great find! This place is so worth the drive out west on 38th street! Arroz Imperial (rice, cheese, olive, and chicken) is awesome. No wonder so many people posted photos of it! The churrasco skirt steak (#15 on the current menu) was also wonderful. You can't go wrong with the empanadas, either. The guava and cheese one is AMAZING. I might get it as dessert in the future because it was a bit sweet. But whether you have it at the beginning or the end of your meal, I highly recommend the guava and cheese empanada. They have beer and wine available as well as specialty coffees. It was too hot outside for us to try the coffee, but we would love to come back to do so.

Havana Café is a family owned Cuban restaurant located in a small strip mall at 38th and Moller Road. My friend, Dianne, and I arrived about noon for lunch. We were quickly greeted and had our choice of any table in the restaurant. There weren't any other patrons but the noise from the TV in the dining room and the stereo in the kitchen was distracting. Kelly, a friend from FC Tucker, suggested I try Havana Café. She said she and her husband love Cuban food and this is their favorite Cuban restaurant in Indy. I called her from the restaurant and she recommended the ropa vieja, moro rice or the ox tails. We started with the guava and cheese empanadas - guava paste and warm cheese inside a flaky pastry. These had a balanced flavor and aren't too sweet. You can't go wrong with the ropa vieja. Slow roasted, tender shreds of beef swimming in perfectly seasoned tomato & beef brothy goodness. I also ordered the Moro rice. Moro is rice simmered with herbs and black beans. This was good combination with the broth from the ropa vieja. Along with the quick friendly service and the great Cuban comfort food this was a great recommendation. I look forward to try the oxtail or the Cuban sandwich next time. Angie whiteriverkitchen.com

My boyfriend is from Nicaragua and loves sweet plantains, so we are always on the prowl for them properly prepared, which is a bit difficult in the midwest. We had success at a Cuban restaurant in Columbus, OH so we decided to try Havana Cafe to see if we could have more success locally. OH BOY, WE DID! The plantains and everything else are excellent. We even took my boyfriend's family and they all love it now too. It is generally not very busy and there is only one server, so don't expect much ambiance, but sometimes that's a good thing. Highly recommend trying a guava and cheese empanada as an appetizer, dessert or both!
(5)Kelly L.
Havana Café is one of my favorite restaurants in Indy. Cuban is one of my favorite cuisines, and while the options for Cuban food in Indy are limited, Havana Café compares well to Cuban restaurants I've visited in other cities. Today I tried the Vaca Frita, which is fried beef with onions and citrus flavors. It was very tasty with the citrus giving a slight sour tang that went well with the sweetness of the meat. The meat was almost crispy without being too dry. Moro rice and plantains were served on the side, and I had a guava and cheese empanada as an appetizer. Everything was delicious. In the past I've tried the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef dish), Rabo Encendido (oxtail stew, which is actually beef), Masas de Puerco (fried pork chunks) and have loved everything I've tried. The food portions are always quite generous, although I wish they had an option for lunch portions and pricing. They also have a very limited vegetarian menu.
(5)Trena T.
I'll start by saying that the three star review is in no way reflective of the food, just the lunchtime prices. The portions are huge---SO much food. The prices are fine for dinner (and the amount of food you get), but it's more than I would generally spend for a lunch (even with leftovers). The sandwich prices are reasonable; I just wish they had a smaller option for mid-day. Husband had Arroz Imperial, a casserole of rice, chicken, cheese, peppers, and onions. Honestly, I thought it was a little bland, but he liked it and that's all that mattered. I had the Vaca Frita, shredded beef that was cooked with onions, peppers, and lemon juice. I didn't taste the lemon much at first, but the more I ate, the more it came through. Delicious! I wasn't sure how that would be; I've never had that combination of flavors before, but I was pleasantly surprised at how it worked together. When we got there, there was only 1 other couple, but there were a number of people there by the time we left. This is a tiny place and the tables are pretty close, so only a few people make a big difference in noise level here. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive. We will definitely go back, but plan on sharing one entrée.

Small restaurant atmosphere and very laid back. Started with the guava and cheese empañada and it was awesome and refreshing. Also tried a stuff potato (stuffed with beef) and it was well seasoned and excellent flavor. My partner had the rice chicken casserole and the chicken melted in your mouth it was so tender. I had the beef steak with onion with moro rice...so very yummy. With the entrees, they have freshly fried plantains. After having fried plantains in a South Beach restaurant in Miami, the fried plantains here were over the top better than those in Miami. Finished our meal with coconut flan...so delicious. Worth stopping in and returning.

Ever had one of those moments where you're in a public setting with a bunch of new faces and find yourself sweating so profusely that you're pretty damn sure when you lift your ass from that plastic chair Lake Erie will have formed where you ass once sat? Too candid for ya? It rarely actually happens, but there is that intense fear that one of these days it will and all the kids in the class are going to be pointing and laughing at you. This exact scenario went down tonight at Havana Cafe. Holy jamoly do they need some blind action in the front windows, or what? This redhead doesn't handle heat all too well. The moment you have a plateful of Havana Cafe's Cuban food in front of you is the moment you forget Lake Erie is taking shape on your backside. For this particular visit, I was joining the fabulous Indy International Supper Club. The Cafe provided a $20 buffet that made exploring Cuban cuisine as easy as pie. Meal breakdown: -Meats: loved them all - each in their own special way. Pork: extremely juicy, broke apart in nice chunks with a unique tangy flavor. Vaca Frita: (fried cow) toss up between this one and the pork for being my favorite meat. Great seasonings! Unlike anything I've had before. -Rices/Sides: Rice and beans of all ethnicity hold a special place in this equal opportunity lover's heart. Havana offered us everything from a plain white rice that fellow Yelper Brittany L. said was mighty tasty to a yellow rice with chunks of chicken. All very good. -Veggie/fruit action: Yucca was yucka. A little drier than the other yuccas I've had before. Sometimes I find myself force feeding particular food items even if they taste less than good because I am mesmerized by where they come from/what they are. This is the case with yucca. However, the plantains were perrrrfect. Not too dry or greasy like I've had them at other places. Havana Cafe is just one more reason to love the vibrant international dining scene in the Lafayette Square/38th Street area. Next time, I'll strategically place myself away from those heat radiating windows.

I am not a fan of Cuban food but MAN! the Cuban sandwich here is the bomb-digity. I don't like pickles and I don't like mustard but together in a Cuban? Perfection. The sandwiches look small to the eye, but sweet mother of pearl so hard to finish one completely! Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Location: 4/5

Food = 3+ (cuban was not bad... and the portions are large. Not impressive overall) Price = 3 (too expensive for the food quality) Experience = (nice server... but too slow. Please please please turn off that very annoying door chime. It's loud and obnoxious and goes off twice every time someone enters???)

Havana Cafe is another international gem hidden away on 38th Street. I had heard good things about this place, but I was a bit nervous about what we were getting ourselves into after reading a few negative Yelp reviews mentioning bad/slow service. However, our waitress tonight was absolutely lovely and kind, and the service was prompt. Food came out quickly and was hot. Zero issues there, so don't let any negative reviews sway you. The food, ohmygod yum. I ordered the ropa vieja, a saucy shredded beef dish served with sweet plantains (or veggies) and choice of rice. Daaamn, I would've eaten that red sauce like soup. Husband ordered the arroz imperial, a yellow rice and chicken casserole topped with cheese (and little green olives were nestled in there like hidden treasures), which was also served with plantains. I'm still trying to decide which dish I enjoyed more (because obviously, if you dine with me, your plate is my plate). Notably, the plantains were perfectly cooked and not greasy or mushy. We also shared two empanadas, chicken and beef, and ended the meal with coconut flan. All that and a Corona were under $40. Entrees were about $9-13 each, and empanadas were $2.50/each, so pretty reasonable prices all around. Everything was absolutely delicious, and we left very full and had PLENTY to take home. Hubby and I are definitely going to be fighting over those leftovers...

Havana cafe is my frequent rest stop between Columbus and Chicago. The lechon asado is usually what I end up ordering. Just love the mix of the onion, garlic, with the occasional crispiness of the pork. Entree prices are less than most Cuban restaurants I've been to.

I'm Cuban and discovered this gem last year. A rare treat to find authentic & delicious cuisine. I highly recommend for you to stop by and enjoy delicious food with great service! For me it's a taste of home. Yummo!

My wife and I are from Chicago and were down visiting my parents for Memorial Day Weekend. My wife is half Cuban and has grown up on traditional Cuban food her entire life. I had heard good things about this place and being so close to my parents house I thought we would give it a try. The food was truly authentic and incredibly fresh! As my wife told our waitress, "This is like sitting down at my family's table and eating a Cuban meal". The owners are Cuban and moved from Miami to Indianapolis 3 years ago. The food is the best Cuban food I've had at a restaurant and I would urge anyone in Indianapolis looking for an affordable authentic Cuban meal to give this place a try.

My wife and I recently ate at Havana Cafe for the first time. The food was great. The restaurant was relatively clean (I eat there again) though the stained table cloths are a little tacky. It's a nice place if you're in the mood for some delicious Cuban food or just dinner with friends. I've sampled the Masitas de puerco frito and the Vaca frita. Both were really good. The tamarindo was also very good and refreshing. The flan was not bad but I'd say it's typical for Cuban flan.

Love this place! Best Cuban sandwich I have had. Guava empanada is a treat! Delicious plantains and very interesting dishes. Don't be in a rush, the food takes time to prepare.
(5)Deana B.
Love this place. I always order the Cuban sandwich. It is perfectly balanced for me with smokey meat, tangy mustard and pickle, creamy cheese (and not too much cheese which is great because this sandwich is not about cheese), and crisp/tender bread. Perfection. I also always order the guava empanada. Heavenly!

I'm a huge fan of Cuban cuisine (not just the sandwiches, although those are my favorite). Havana Cafe truly does Cuban cuisine justice. I hadn't been here for several months, and upon entering, I noticed immediately that they have really upped their game as far as ambience is concerned. The room is nicely appointed, with white linen tablecloths and tasteful Cuban art/decoration. I found out that ownership had changed since my last visit and those improvements were evident. As far as the food goes, it is still excellent. The Cuban sandwich is still one of the best in the city and the ropa vieja is the best. They also still serve breakfast, which although I have never tried theirs, I greatly look forward to in the near future.

The food is great, but the waitress is soooo incredibly rude. Every time we ask her for something she made it seem as if we were an inconvenience to her, I myself am a server and I know what the job entails so I make sure to always be polite but this woman is just rude.... Literally the worst customer service I've ever had.... I wouldn't recommend it because of the customer service... I also know how to cook the Spanish food they make here and I only come because It's a nice break from cooking.... I'll never come back EVER AGAIN... Not how you should treat a paying customer

This is another hidden gem in Indianapolis. This is a small family run restaurant just off of 38th street. This is not a fancy place and you should not come here for the décor. This place may seat about 40 people. Some people are put off by this place due to the location and the décor and I feel sorry for you. Please, feel free to go waste your money at some overpriced below average food chain restaurant with a nice décor. I have been going here for about 4 months and I have had excellent service every time. The young lady is always friendly and attentive. I found out that this place is owned by a husband and wife. The husband was doing the cooking the day I asked. You can tell he has a lot of pride and high standards for the type of food he serves at this great restaurant. The food is great. Everything, I have tried has been great to incredible. If you like unique coffee, try the Cuban coffee it is outstanding. It is $2 for a single serving but is worth the price especially compared to Starcrapoverpricedbucks. Here are a couple other tasty treats. I have had empanadas and Yucca as appetizers. Both of them are around the $2 to $3 range which are reasonably priced especially since they are homemade and fresh. I have had only two entrees and a sandwich (mostly because all three are great and I just get a craving for one of them). First the Cubano sandwich is really good. This is priced in the $7 or $8 price range and well worth it. The bread is fresh and works perfectly with the sandwich. I really enjoy this sandwich especially with the Yucca. Nice size sandwich and well worth the price. I have had the pulled pork entrée several times. The pork has great flavor and they give you a nice sauce that sometimes I use and sometimes I don't. It is good either way. I get the Moro rice and beans and this has excellent flavor. Usually sides are just that, but both the Moro and Plantains are awesome and really add to the main dish. I have had the pounded Flank steak with chimichurri sauce with the same sides. This entrée is great also and would be my must have highly recommended dish for this restaurant. The sauce has an intense flavor but I really enjoy that. The entrees are in the $9 to $15 range and worth every penny. If you are adventurous and like to be open to explore new cultures, this is a place for you to try. If you are bored of chain restaurants and think for yourself and are not manipulated by millions of dollars in TV commercials to make yourself believe you have to eat average to below average overpriced food at some chain restaurant, I am one of you. Let's all keep supporting the true food scene in Indiana.

I am so mad at my wife. She lived in Miami for many many years and was entrenched in the Cuban culture down there. And she didn't tell me about this restaurant until three years into our marriage. Came in, restaurants clean bathrooms are clean. Got empanadas for the appetizers, the chicken version completely amazing Chrispy flaky crust, seasoned chicken. I got the Imperial polo dish. Covered in cheese that rice was spiced perfectly the chicken was cooked to perfection l. In closing I ended up buying three more empanadas to go home with me my wife bought enough to go home with her to have for dinner. In short absolutely amazing no complaints no issues waitress was great. It's beyond perfect.
(5)Ian J.
Awesome food. I had a chicken dish w potatoes in tomato broth and it was absolutely perfect. Meat just slipped off the bone. Also try the guava/cheese empanadas and the coconut flan.

In a city over populated with sports bars, pizzerias, and burger joints, it is so refreshing to find something off the beaten path right here in the land of cornfields. There are no frills, but when you walk through the door you feel like you've stepped right into Havana. The staff is very friendly and very helpful if you're feeling indecisive on what to order. I had the fricase de pollo with the moro rice and plantains. It hit the spot! Perfect sized portions with room for dessert (cheese empanadas) and left me feeling perfectly satisfied. The menu offers a wide enough variety to satisfy any picky eater and leaves everyone with an option. I will definitely be coming back!

Cuban foot in an Indy strip mall. Excellent! I had the ox tail, it was superb. Started with an empenada sampling. Chicken were my favorite. Finished with an expertly prepared Cuban cafe con leche. We'll be back.
(5)Jessica L.
My friends and I just came back home from Miami, where we ate the best cuban sandwiches. Naturally I was craving them so I came here. Happy to say they did not disappoint. I will be back soon.
(4)N H.
I have yet to try an entree but the frituras are ON POINT! I got an empanada and it was very good. The rellenos de papa was so good I thought I was back in New York. The beef was a bit different than the Puerto Rican rellenos that I'm used to, but still tasty. And so inexpensive! Just $3 or less for frituras. Cuban cafe is real great as well - gotta love the Cuban coffee! Also, the entrees are very reasonably priced.

Havana Cafe was one of the restaurants that my boyfriend and I stumbled upon, and I was absolutely blown away! The atmosphere is relaxing and adorable, and the service is great. I haven't had a lot of Cuban food, so our waitress pointed out some dishes that she thought would be great to try. We also tried a Cuban drink, Iron Beer, which is sort of like a root beer, and it was delicious! If you like root beer and orange cream soda, that's kinda what it tastes like. For eats, we started with the guava and cheese empanadas that was so highly recommended on yelp. It did not disappoint! I honestly would prefer eating that to a Long's donut, any day (but that's just my opinion). For our entrees, my boyfriend got the vaca fritas (?), a shredded beef dish with lemon juice, onions, etc. My only beef with this dish (pun fully intended) was how chewy the beef was. However, I still rate this restaurant as a 5-star place because the flavors were so phenomenal. I got the roast pork, and it was AMAZING!!!!! The meat practically melted in my mouth, and when combined with the sauce (a mild, tamarind vinegar?), it was orgasmic. We finally finished with a small Cuban coffee with a splash of milk, which was very yummy. Overall, I will definitely be back! I'm only sad that we discovered it on our last day of living on the west side of Indy. Now we'll have to drive 30 minutes to get our Cuban fix!
(5)Marc N.
I had the shrimp creole with rice and black beans and plantains. It was delicious! I'll be back and throw it in my weekly rotation!
(5)Leslie G.
We love this family ran business. From the level of service you get to the fantastical food. Couldn't be happier!!! Also just ordered empanadas for the first time and they are soooo freaking fabulous. Way better than the shack off allisonville rd.!!
(5)Brian J.
If you want to eat better Cuban cuisine then you had best start driving South and call ahead to Key West for a boat rental. Holy Schnikees this Cuban food is awesome!! My wife and I had wanted to try this place for some time and tonight we indulged. I had the shredded beef cooked in garlic, onion, and lemon with the moro rice which is white rice mixed with black beans. I also had the fried sweet plantains. Everything was fantastic. My wife had a pork dish with yellow rice and the plantains as well. Her dish was just as tasty and had a sauce with it that is to die for to say the least. I missed the name of it so I'm just going to call it Awesomesauceâ„¢. The portions were large, the service was friendly, and the restaurant was tidy and clean. Price tag for two entrees and two soft drinks plus a 20% tip was $35. We were both very happy and will probably be back next weekend for round two!

(2)Alex P.
(5)Christie B.
(5)Anita S.

(3)G S.

(3)Anthony T.

Cuban foot in an Indy strip mall. Excellent! I had the ox tail, it was superb. Started with an empenada sampling. Chicken were my favorite. Finished with an expertly prepared Cuban cafe con leche. We'll be back.

My friends and I just came back home from Miami, where we ate the best cuban sandwiches. Naturally I was craving them so I came here. Happy to say they did not disappoint. I will be back soon.

I had a wonderful chicken dish with rice. And a great Café Cubano

The staff is friendly, the food has improved. wouldn't really recommend it.

I love this place!! Been looking for real Cuban coffee finally found it!! The Cuban sandwich was beautiful!!!!

(5)Joshua C.
(5)Mark B.
Heavenly!
(5)Peter P.
(4)Cristina T.
(1)Mark V.

(4)Michael F.
(3)George V.
(2)Alex P.
(5)Anna L.
(5)Bobby J.
(5)Stacy P.

(5)Joseph C.
(5)Anthony T.
(5)Doug D.
