I am a HUGE graeter's fan and have been since encountering it several years ago. I was so excited about them opening a location in Indianapolis that on one of the coldest days this year (in the worst winter I can remember), I made a bunch of family members go with me to the store. I don't like to oversell because that can create unjustified expectations, but you cannot help but gush about how wonderful and delicious Graeter's is (and how it is the best ice cream in the world!!). (Some members of my family were highly skeptical.) While I would absolutely give the ice cream 5 stars (made the same way since 1870, 2 gallons at a time; creamiest ice cream ever), I have to give the store 4 stars because both restrooms were closed, which was inconvenient! I'm sure that something was beyond the owner's control, but he could have at least rented a portable restroom or something for his first week in business and the store's grand opening. The store is clean and also sells Jelly Belly products. There were fresh roses everywhere (we went 2 days after St. Valentine's Day). The people behind the counter were pleasant. It's quite a trek for me, but I will probably make the trip again soon. On average, it cost $4 per person. (Those skeptics in my family became believers.)

The other night we went to Graeter's around 9 and they close at 11. The inside was a bit dirty and none of the staff were doing anything to take care of it, they weren't understaffed either and were annoyed anyone had walked through the door. The girl taking our order was one of the rudest people I have dealt with in food service. It didn't feel very inviting, very corporate and didn't feel like the neighborhood. I'll just keep enjoying the local businesses of indianapolis like Brics and The Flying Cupcake.
(2)Karla S.
The ice cream is amazing here! So happy we now have a location in Indianapolis. Butter pecan is my favorite! The staff is friendly and will offer samples if you want to try a flavor before you order. Free parking, indoor and outdoor seating available.
(5)Nicole S.
My favorite ice cream in town! It is always busy so don't go if you don't want to wait in a line. Customer service is great and it's really clean.
(5)Abby N.
delicious! Graeters has many choices of amazing flavors. The caramel gelato was to die for. I am always a sucker for the raspberry chocolate chip. The location is great, easy street parking available all around. The staff was extremely friendly and patient dealing with my fickle self.
(5)Preston S.
Please move a location closer to the Carmel area. I would go to Graeter's when I went to King's Island in Ohio so I was super excited when they brought it to Indy. This is by far the best ice cream that I have ever had. Never a disappointing bite. I would stock up on this ice cream if I could.
(5)Kristin S.
Ice cream? check. gelato? check. Shakes? check. Rad sundaes? check. Pints to go? check. All you need to know.....just go...and if, for nothing else, the black cherry chocolate chip ice cream.
(5)Scott N.
Wow. I'm not sure how I missed out on Graeter's for so long. It only took me searching for a light night ice cream fix on the northside to stumble upon what I'm sure most Indianapolitians have known about for a long time. Graeter's is everything you could possibly want with an ice cream parlor, handpacked ice cream, eclectic flavors, large selections of sundaes, and high schoolers serving you with a smile in 50's era uniforms. Everything was perfect. I assure you, I will drive from wherever I am in the Circle City to enjoy Graeter's again and I highly recommend that you do the same.

When I was a kid, I loved when we'd go to Cincinnati and stop at Graeters. I've since learned that Cincy has an even better ice cream shop, Aglamesis, but Graeters is still, forgive the pun, great. They have a spectacular technique for making "chocolate chip". They swirl in large amounts of soft chocolate, but amazingly, it doesn't get hard. This results in really good mint chocolate 'chip' (a personal favorite), and also their awesome raspberry chip. The only problem with this location is that parking is a little hard.
(3)Brittany S.
Yes. Yes. And here's why: -I'm obsessed with the fact that they hand pack all of their ice cream and use a small batch approach to making each flavor -very friendly service at this location -I know everyone is all about the black raspberry with chocolate chips ice cream, but I had to go for the dark cherry and chocolate ice cream (AMAZING). Still thinking about 48 hours later -for next time: they make fountain sodas - better yet, they have my favorite flavor: lemon!
(5)Jason O.
Great stop for ice cream and to sit outside and watch the traffic and people go by. If you like chocolate you are going to love this place. Their flavors with chocolate have HUGE rich chunks of chocolate. A single scoop of chocolate peanut butter was so so rich and delicious! Definately made a mental note to stop back here!
(4)Pam N.
Just made my first trip to this location. The staff members gave informative tips about the products, let us take a picture with their trophy, and answered all of our questions. Not to mention...my ice cream was delicious!
(5)Richard H.
Love Graeter's and so happy they have opened locally. The flavors are certainly far from adventurous, but if you want excellent classic American ice cream, this is the place. (The "gelato" has a consistency problem, though.)
(5)Kyle P.
Ok, I'm a huge Graeter's fan!!! But I have to say it is so LAME to have changed the name of "Buckeye Blitz" to Chocolate PB Chocolate Chip...really Indianapolis? Minus one star just out of principle!
(4)Jeremy M.
If I were a slightly less practical person I'd consider packing up everything I own and moving to Broad Ripple... just to make it a shorter trip to Graeter's. We don't make it here as often as I'd like, but we still manage to get there often enough to remember why we love it. The inside of the place is fairly large with a good amount of seating. They also have a bunch of local art on the wall for purchase, which is a nice touch. We've always had great service and, even on a busy night, there are a good number of workers and they manage to get through the line pretty quickly. There's also a few patio tables outside and we've often seen people out there with their dogs. Now, the ice cream itself... wow. It's all quite good but their Black Cherry Chocolate Chip is definitely my favorite. The hand-scooped goodness in a waffle cone makes for the perfect summer night treat. And now I have to stop writing this review... the drool pouring from my mouth at the thought of Graeter's is in danger of ruining my keyboard.
(5)Sarah F.
This new Graeter's is conveniently located in the awesome little neighborhood on Illinois Street, near Oh Yumm! Bistro, the Flying cupcake, and the Food Emporium. The line can be quite long in the evening, but they had plenty of servers/scoopers ready to help out. I was disappointed by the flavor after reading so many good things (I blame former Cincinnati natives for their understandable nostalgic longing). The flavors didn't totally knock my socks off but they were pretty good. The blackberry chip and mint chip are definitely worth a return trip. The fact that Graeter's is open a little later than other midtown ice cream spots also means they get my business when I have a hankering for ice cream at 9 PM. It happens to the best of us, okay!
(3)Leslie R.
Let's just say I'm very thankful that I don't have to drive 2 hours for ice cream (and, yes... I have driven that far just for Graeter's).
(5)Emily S.
The absolute best ice cream, hands down, no contest. Staff are very friendly and pleasant and have to put up with so many screaming kids and some pretty demanding customers. The keep a good stock and variety of retail items in the freezers. I truly can't imagine any better ice cream on the planet. Also, great idea they keep a water cooler in the shop because all that ice cream can't make you thirsty.
(5)Chad F.
Small hand crafted ice cream done the French pot way! High quality in every bite. Been around for years in the Cincinnati area and now expanding outside of Ohio. This Indy location is a great spot.
(5)Robin L.
Of course I love it. I'm from Cincinnati and was born with Graeter's in my blood stream. Not that my genetic predisposition to this small pot-crafted ice cream makes me biased--it really is worth a trip. The ice cream is nice and thick but not heavy like custard. The chocolate chips are amazing homemade chocolate that is rich and thick. My favorite is the mocha chip and seasonal coconut chip. Hubby says the vanilla is amazing. Just glad to see another Cincy staple here in Indy!
(5)Brittany L.
This ice cream is so good...every bit as good as it was back in the 'Nati. One scoop is $2.99 plus tax, but it's a very large scoop. I had chocolate chip cookie dough and it was great. The ladies working there were very nice too. I had a sample of salted caramel and I may have to get a scoop of that too at some point. I like the neighborhood where this place is. It's next door to Illinois Street Food Emporium and across the street from a liquor store. There's also a grocery store, CVS, Kincaid's Meat Market, Starbucks, Oh Yumm! Bistro, several upscale clothing stores, Kids Ink (bookstore), and the original Flying Cupcake. So you could totally use "running errands" as an excuse to visit Graeter's. If you go swimming at the Riviera Club this summer, ice cream would be the perfect "after pool treat"!
(5)Meredith S.
I LOVE ICE CREAM!! I'll scream it from every rooftop in Indianapolis. My love of the creamy ice knows no bounds. When I heard that a Graeter's was opening up mere miles from my homestead, I knew this was going to be both a blessing and a curse (curse only for my waistline..nothing else). Have now gone twice and am planning on a weekend trip too. Last night I ordered the peanut butter chocolate chip. The chocolate chips are more like CHUNKS. I like to save all of them for the very end so my last few bites are just mouth watering chunks of decadent chocolate. Also, the ice cream is sooo creamy. Almost like a frozen custard or something. Both times I've went it's been crazy busy inside, so I know I'm not the only one with a love for Graeter's. Can't wait to go back and keep trying all the flavors. I think.. no wait, I know.. I'm going to stick with the flavors that include the chocolate chunks :)
(5)Leslie L.
The ice cream is good but nothing to write home about. I had the St Patrick's Day sundae which was enough for two people to share. I found the whole idea of a special sundae for the holiday enticing but my biggest problem with this place was how dirty it was. There were a lot of people working behind the counter not doing anything but the floors and tables were a mess. I just wish they took a little pride in the appearance of the shop. I will have to give this place a second try in a few weeks.
(2)Sonya A.
Wow! Delicious! The quality of the ice cream and gelato is fantastic! There isn't massive variety of flavors but the flavors they have are da bomb.com ! I suggest to black raspberry chocolate chunk. It's so good! Also had a bit of a shock as we walked in because it is PACKED with kids. This was a 7pm on a Wednesday, I asked the gal if its always this loud and rowdy and she said yes. Poor girl, I hope they provide aspirin to the employees. So family friendly, but if you want to enjoy your ice cream in some peace they recommend coming earlier in the day. Ice cream: 5/5 Service: 5/5 - Though the place seemed jam-packed and in disarray, the crew was quick and polite! Location: 5/5 - Clean, great location... now I just wish for another restaurant over here.

I was super excited when I heard they were putting a Graeter's Ice Cream shop in Indianapolis.. and kept driving by checking on the progress of the construction, just waiting for them to open! If you haven't been here before, you're in for a real treat. When I go to Cincinnati, I try and make a stop at one of their locations if I can. I fell in love with them several years earlier, and can't believe we finally have ONE in Indiana... and it's an easy drive from my place (or a quick swing-by after work). My favorite is the Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip, which is apparently everyone else's favorite because the sign says it's their #1 seller. Score.. this means they won't be getting rid of it anytime soon! A close second is the Blueberry Pie. I can't wait to have this sitting outside on a hot summer day! Although they just opened, a lot of people have been waiting on this place, so plan a little extra time to wait in line.

Graeter's is literally the best ice cream ever. I used to live in Louisville where there is a Graeter's location and was a huge fan. I moved to Indy in 2008, and have made several trips to Louisville since just for the sole purpose of getting Graeter's. I am ecstatic there is now an Indy location. I have probably had Graeter's a hundred times, and have always got the chocolate chip cookie dough. I have never even tried anything else, because if it's not broke, don't fix it. I highly recommend it. If you go to Graeter's and get some silly mint chocolate sundae, you might be a sourpuss and write a two star review on yelp. But how can you blame Graeter's??? Mint is for toothpaste, not ice cream.
(5)Mike H.
I was at Graeter's on Saturday night and I have an issue that I would like to address. Being a business owner myself, I know how important customer service is. Treating all customers with respect is what keeps a business going. A tall girl with blonde hair whose name was Megan was "helping" me. She was very rude and pushy, and she was trying to rush me. She was very impatient and made my first impression of this establishment less than mediocre. When she was giving me my change back, she held it directly over the tip jar, as if insisting that I tip her. I was surprised and offended. I hope that is not how all of the customers that come in are treated. The icecream was great, but maybe the employees need to work on their manners.
(1)Kevin H.
The best ice cream! New location looks great. Very friendly staff. I have been to other locations before and it's finally here in Indy! I will be back with friends and family!
(5)Katy M.
I'm from Cincinnati, I grew up 2 minutes walk from Ludlow ave Graeter's. If I want to eat pastries or ice cream I literally only want Graeter's and settle otherwise. Mint chocolate chip ice cream and tea cookies are my weakness. Since moving to Indianapolis I can buy my Graeter's ice cream at Kroger, but tea cookies have been reserved for visits back to Cincinnati or my in laws mailing them to us :) When I found a Graeter's had opened in Indianapolis I flipped out and immediately went to get my fix. There was a huge line as there should be, but I weaseled in to find a box of my coveted tea cookies... looking... looking. Oh, this location only had ice cream and some candies and no baked goods whatsoever. I was the most disappointed I've been in months. I mean, if I want a double dip soda I'll be set, but what I wanted was tea cookies. So we left empty handed and dejected. If you want ice cream worth all the calories go here. If you want the best dinner rolls, pastries and cookies you'll ever have go to Cincinnati Graeter's.
(4)Stephanie P.
I missed having gigantic chocolate chips in my ice cream, so I'm super glad that Graeter's opened up right by Butler! The employees are always pretty cool and nice, even when they're busy.
(5)Amy D.
The best ice cream ever!! I knew them from Cincy, and was so excited to see them here in Indy. The store is a great place to go for seasonal or special flavors for a treat, but I tend to buy the pints at Kroger when they're on sale. Pricy stuff, but SOOO good.
(4)Nick W.
I'm nearly certain that no matter what flavor you get, you will not be disappointed. This is by far the best ice cream I have ever had. Fair warning, the portion sizes are large, a single scoop is much more than one scoop. I asked for a double scoop not knowing this and ended up with a small serving for tomorrow.
(5)Hersh A.
Go here for tasty and delicious ice cream. They have a nice variety to choose from. I liked their Signature Chocolate Chip selection. Try their Black Raspberry chocolate chip and Chocolate Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip flavors. The Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip milkshake was da bomb. Exquisite taste. The texture of coconut and almond were pretty evident in the other one and both of those ice creams were smooth. I liked that. What I didn't like is that their ice cream is a tad bit too sweet. They have six interesting and delicious sounding sundae flavors to try. They have got gelato, sorbets, milkshakes and ice cream fountain sodas as well. Prices are reasonable. Definitely one of the better ice cream places I have had. I did like Brics and Bassett's better but this place is almost on par with them, in my opinion. 3.5 stars.
(3)Joseph H.
Took the family to Graeter's on a Friday afternoon. The employees were very friendly and trying a few tastes of this yummy ice cream was no problem. I had a salted caramel gelato while my wife and daughter had mocha chocolate chip and cookie dough chocolate chip ice cream. All were amazing and I was pleasantly surprised at the size of a single scoop. Big chunks of chocolate and other ingredients make it clear that this is a small batch premium ice cream. I'm disappointed in myself for not finding this place earlier.
(5)Julianna Y.
Love love the fact that they are open late and their gelato is amazing. I can't wait to try more of their selection next time I'm in!
(5)Kkdanville D.
If you like premium ice cream with yummy chocolate chips in it this place is for you. I highly recommend a visit to Graters Ice Cream. It has an indoor seating area, friendly staff and top notch ice cream. It is not super cheap..about $3.00 per scoop, but you can also get a few samples.
(5)Scott B.
Graeters at Illinois and 56th has the best Gelato I've had outside Florence and Boston. Creamy and loaded with savory flavors. They make my mouth very happy. Since they moved in last year, Graeters has become a gathering place for the families, (and dogs) of the neighborhood on warm days. What a wonderful addition to our community!
(5)Emily M.
I didn't grow up in Ohio but I did grow up in Butler Tarkington. Graeter's Ice Cream is just ok. Combine that with the strong smell of cleaner and pee that hit my nose as I entered the place and it prompted me to turn the other way and back out the door. I'm assuming they had washed the entire floor of the shop with the bathroom floor water. My husband got a scoop of some sort of chocolate flavor that I reluctantly tried. Again, just ok. I decided to give them one last chance and got a strawberry shake to go the next time. It was strawberry ice cream mixed with some milk. It was expensive and I could barely taste any strawberry. I'm no expert on Ohio ice cream but after trying Jeni's ice cream at the Fresh Market, I just wish the Graeter's had been a Jeni's.
(1)Olivia M.
We have family friends in Cincinnati, so I was very excited when I heard that Graeter's was coming to Indianapolis! There are plenty of flavors of ice cream and gelato to choose from. If you're a chocolate fan, get any flavor with chocolate chips (chocolate chunks!) and let your taste buds thank you. They make their own chocolate! The staff were very friendly and quick. They were doing a solid business on a Wednesday night (in the midst of a snow flurry, no less!), so this place will be packed when the weather gets warmer. The parking lot is tiny, but Illinois Street has free street parking and other lots within walking distance. If you'd rather take your ice cream home, they sell multiple flavors in various container sizes. The ice cream cakes and pies looked delicious, too. I'm already tempted to get one for my birthday, and it's not until September!
(4)Emily H.
Chocolate chips they say...Like woah...more like CHOCOLATE CHUNKS! I tasted a couple of flavors before I made my final decision...okay more like five. I didn't want to make the wrong choice. Not like you could! Well, I opted for the Toffee Chocolate Chip! It was absolutely wonderful. The ice cream was smooth and creamy, the toffee chunks added a nice crunch, and the chocolate chunks were soft and added just enough chocolate into my one scoop serving. Luckily, this place is located just down the road from school because I have a feeling I will be making many more visits!!
(5)Nicole S.
I love ice cream. I will eat it in the dead of winter, I will eat it with a splinter. I have been a fan of Graeter's for a while. I used to babysit for a family that paid me in Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip, so I was very excited to find out they were coming to Broadripple. I went with my boyfriend on Mother's Day and we were automatically overwhelmed with how busy it was. There were children running around their small parking lot screaming (obviously not Graeter's fault) and it was packed. While this was annoying, it wasn't a huge problem. What was a problem? How dirty it was. There was trash everywhere and puddles of melted ice cream on the floor. Our ice cream was awesome, which I knew it would be, but I didn't have the best experience. Here was my final thought as we drove away feeling full of delicious ice cream, but slightly violated by the sounds of screaming kids and yelling moms. Graeter's is delicious, but you can buy their ice cream at Kroger. It's no BRICS, where the location is second to none, it's local, and there is a sweet old man bringing you free cups of water at just the right time. Graeter's was really good, and I will definitely go there again, but I will remain a BRICS loyalist for the time being.
(4)Leslie H.
What's not to love with iced cream? This place is delish. I can be here everyday as their selection is oh so good. Prepare to park on the side streets. The place is hard to miss. Their iced cream is deliciously thick and hand packed. You'll be lost in their toppings and their sundaes are awesome. Each time I come here, I always get two scoops of sundae on a waffle bowl and I also get a milkshake to go. So sinfully delicious!
(5)Kaela V.
Best ice cream in town. I had the chocolate, almond, coconut ice cream and highly recommend it. They have a great selection of flavors as well as sundaes, Malts, shakes, cakes, etc. There is no drive through--but there is a nice patio out front with umbrellas for covered seating.
(5)Clare L.
Run, don't walk to Graeter's. Ice cream at its best. The banana chocolate chip is my favorite flavor, but sadly it is a seasonal flavor and is only available in the summer. I like that they have gelato too if you're not feeling ice cream when you come here. The pints for sale in the freezers to take home are an added bonus.
(5)Rob S.
A wonderful Cincinnati ice cream that has come to Indy. They are known for their black raspberry chip, but you can't go wrong with any of the selections they have. Salty caramel and coconut chocolate chip are fantastic. Ask for a sample and they will provide one for you. They make their own chocolate which is a big difference in their ice cream. You will pay more here, but it is worth it.
(4)Patrick P.
This may be an Ohio creation, but don't hold that against them! Fantastic selection, huge scoops. Get the salted caramel. Just do it. Don't argue with me. The Bourbon Ball has actual bourbon in it, which is a nice departure. Can't say enough good things about this place. Go!
(4)Keith R.
HAVE AGAIN: the vanilla chocolate chip was very good, as was the dark chocolate gelato. Large helpings and very friendly staff. I liked this shop very much.
(4)Jennifer S.
My daughter, who writes for her HS paper was given an assignment to review Graeter's, which she was excited to do after having tried their Peach at King's Island earlier this summer. Wanting to show support of her writing and reviews, we all packed in and headed over for our first taste. So many delicious choices, it was a tough decision for us all, however, sis had to select the most popular one to review. She'd just missed the Peach, retired in August, and went for the Raspberry Chocolate chip, which out sells all other flavors 2 to 1. We only ordered a single scoop, but the cones came back stacked high. My youngest ordered Toffee Chocolate Chip, Corey; Elena's Blueberry Pie, while I got the Caramel Gelato with Sea Salt, Holy cow, this stuff is what dreams are made of! We all took turns licking one another's before our sugar buzz set in. No wonder its a Meridian Kessler family staple.
(5)Allison F.
I'll look for any excuse to come in here. I love that Salted Caramel gelato as well as the seasonal flavors!
(4)Vanessa C.
This ice cream is the real stuff. And reasonably priced. Great staff. Always busy. People come from everywhere for their ice cream. One scoop is huge! My favorite is the back cherry chocolate chip. Should be called "chunk" the chocolate is in chunks unlike others that may have a few chips here and there. Yumm
(5)Ntianu S.
I have been to the new BR location twice. Overall the ice cream is delicious. The location is perfect. I just adore the little shopping area on Illinois Street. I know they are known for their chocolate chips, but they are just too large and numerous for my taste. I know, it's weird. I wanted to love this ice cream, but I just didn't. The size of the chocolate chips was a distraction. If they were smaller I would be happier. This is still a fantastic place to go for ice cream. I can see why it's so popular. I will still return, but will pick out some of the chips. They had a private lot for parking and a pretty cool regards program. Customer service is also good.
(3)C Y.
We used to get Graeter's when we visited friends in Ohio, so we were thrilled to see this place open locally. The staff is always friendly, even when the lines are long. It's a tiny shoppe, so you might have to search for it, but you definitely won't regret stopping in! Don't be afraid to try the mystery flavor!
(5)Nancy P.
Always good! True to taste flavor with real bites of chocolate, coconut etc in your ice cream cone. Blackberry sauce is awesome over cake with fruit at home as another kind of Graeters treat.
(5)Brittany H.
So delicious. I loved the flavor selection, I went with the chocolate coconut almond and was not disappointed. Despite being a busy night, the staff moved quickly and efficiently. I'm ready to go back and try something new!
(5)Tara P.
By far one of the best ice cream shoppes I've ever been to! The chocolate and caramel gelatos are AMAZING! Being from out of town, I didn't know who had better ice cream, BRICS or Graeter's so we tried both! BRICS honestly was the worst ice cream I've ever had and Graeter's probably one of the best ice cream I've ever had! Choose Graeter's, you will not be disappointed!!!
(5)Rachel X.
Can I just say happy?? I'm thrilled there is a Graeter's ice cream in Indy!! Seriously the best ice cream ever. Toffee chocolate chip and the black raspberry chocolate chip are terrific.
