Chris’s Ice Cream Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

This little authentic Mexican restaurant has THE BEST ICE CREAM IN INDY!! If you look, you'll think it's a joke. It's called "Chris's Ice Cream and Mexican" and it's in a small strip mall by the Monon. BUT...we regularly ride our bikes there (over Huddles!) for the freshest, homemade ice cream I've tasted in Indy. Flavors change regularly with what's in season. Right now my favorite is coconut (super rich and PACKED with flakes). The chocolate tastes like fresh cocoa--and the texture is smooth and creamy. Other flavors we love include White Russian, Guava, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Strawberry (Oh. My. Strawberry.) The owner is awesome--super kind and friendly and will let you sample the flavors and tell you about them all. Definitely worth the stop!!

I write this review with sweet tears of relief in my eyes, because lo: today is the day I have finally found a decent BRC burrito in Indianapolis (bean, rice and cheese, for the uninitiated). Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would have found it at an ice cream shop, of all places, but Indy is a magical place full of wonder and surprises. First of all, BRC burritos are not on the menu -- you have to order them special. When I ordered one, the guy who took my order kept asking if I wanted something else in it ("So, no sour cream? No lettuce?") NO! Just beans, rice and cheese, like I can get them everywhere in Los Angeles. The owner came from out back behind the kitchen to confirm that I wanted a burrito "with nothing in it," then told me he's had a few people "like me" come in the past few weeks ordering just bean and cheese burritos, or rice and bean burritos. It was then that I learned that the owners are from Long Beach, CA! What a small world. After learning that, I was slightly surprised at their surprise about me ordering a BRC burrito, as they are pretty commonplace in SoCal. Anyway, long story short, this place has good burritos. Like, burrito-burritos: The kind wrapped in foil that you can hold in your hand, not smothered in sauce that you eat with a fork and knife. Along with a BRC burrito, we also ordered a pork burrito and a steak burrito, and those were excellent, too. Certainly the best we've had in Indy so far. I tried a sample of their coconut ice cream, which is made in-house, and it was delicious! I'll have to come back to get ice cream. An added bonus is that the owners are genuinely friendly people. I'll definitely be back for more burritos!

I love this little place right off the Monon Trail on the south side of 86th Street. Don't be fooled by the name. First of all, there's no Chris here. The owner is Jaime. And it's not just an ice cream shoppe (more on that later). It's a Mexican restaurant with a limited menu. They have tacos, enchiladas and tortas. And they're all superb. These are the real deal (even though Jaime is actually not from Mexico, but El Salvador). If you like spicy food, definitely get the enchiladas (green sauce). They will light you up. Even the red sauce (they will bring out a squeeze bottle with the house red sauce and green sauce to your table) has a kick. The tacos and enchiladas are pretty straightforward. If you're a little more adventurous, there are the tortas (sandwiches). One of them has a chicken milanesa (breaded), hot dogs (!), egg, ham, and chorizo (to name the primary ingredients). Jaime says it's one of his most popular items. As for the ice cream, there are the usual suspects (vanilla, chocolate), but that's boring. You have to try some of the more exotic flavors (e.g. rum raisin, avocado, White Russian). If you're walking/jogging/running/Rollerblading(!)/cycling on the Monon on a hot day, stop into Jaime's to cool off with a scoop of ice cream. Or heat up further with the green enchiladas! And say hi to Jaime. He is the friendliest guy and always remembers a face.

This is the third time I've been here in a week so it's probably about time I reviewed it. During my most recent visit, I was seated near a kid who suddenly and without warning vomited orange soda all over the table as I was eating my taco. I finished my taco. This is a testament to how good these tacos are. No way I wasn't going to finish it. Bonus: the owner is super nice and accommodating. Excellent customer service. Try the coconut ice cream. In conclusion: Tacos: 9/10 with vomit, 10/10 without

The food is fresh and cheap and it tastes so good. Why are you still reading this review? Put down the phone and go get you some tacos!!! Yes, this is an "ice cream" shop. And they do have very good ice cream. They have the standards, plus avocado, mango, pistachio, and rum raisin (heavy on the rum). They also happen to have the best Mexican food around (technically the owner is from El Salvador). They have cantina-style tacos and super hot enchiladas. Try the tortas. They have one that has breaded chicken, hot dogs, chorizo, ham, egg, avocado, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, and onion. I had one without egg. It is such a weird combination, but incredible. I highly recommend it. The hotdogs are sliced longways into thirds and grilled, so they have a great char and crispiness. The chorizo and avocado add needed fat. It is an all around perfect sandwich. This place is right off the Monon, so it is a great spot to hit when you are biking or running and its only a mile from the 96th street parking lot, so you and your fully belly can waddle back to your car afterwards without too much discomfort.

Don't be afraid! Try the wonderfully authentic Mexican food! Reasonably priced and the owners are the most pleasant folks around!

Finally wrapped my head around going to an ice cream shop to get Mexican food. And boy am I ever glad I did! My husband and I have traveled south of the border on a number of occasions and love Mexican cuisine. Of course we have to come home and finding authentic Mexican in Indpls is next to impossible -- until now. We went for the tacos, sopas and enchiladas mixed between chicken, beef and pork and were more than pleased. Ordered the salsa on the side and glad we did. It's a little too spicy for our palates. Everything else was wonderful and we'll have to go back to try the rest of the menu offerings. The meat was generous, shells delicious and seasonings perfection. Had a sampling of three of his ice creams, mango. Butter pecan and guava. While we waited for our food order to come up the owner gave us cups of our favorites (the sample cups he provided were very generous) and made me want to take my food order home and just eat ice cream. Creamy, tasty and all flavors were great! We shared our food and still have enough left over for lunch tomorrow. The price for portion ratio was much more than expected. All you foodies looking for real Mexican and 'to die for' ice cream make Chris's your next spot. You Won't regret it. Guaranteed we'll be back.

This was an example of how great reviews can make a difference. I would never have found this place were it not for Yelp reviews and I certainly wouldn't have stopped in if I had just stumbled by. See, Chris's isn't much to look at, and by the name, you'd likely never expect that it really does have food. Well, I'm happy to say that it does...and it is as authenticate as you'll find around. I lived in LA for over a decade and I have long missed real Mexican food. It really does exist here! I didn't try the ice cream, but the tacos were simply awesome. I had to deduct a star for the overall ambiance and aesthetics, just to be fair, but I was truly impressed. I will go back. In fact, I am already starting to crave those flavored again...

authentic Mexican food. The tacos are amazing...and I love the enchiladas too. Those are the only two items I've tried. Fresh tasting and the spicy sauces provided are delicious. The owner is friendly.

I'm soooo glad I finally went here! I found a place in indianapolis that actually have authentic Mexican tacos! The name of the place is deceiving due to the ice cream title but there tacos here are the bomb. Save your money on chipotle or Taco Bell and give this place a try!

I put off getting lunch here for several months because I just couldn't wrap my head around an ice cream place serving Mexican food. Feeling adventurous, I finally stopped by to grab a quick bite. I'm so glad I did; Chris's serves cheap, authentic tacos made to order. (2 tacos were less than $3!) Tacos here consist of corn tortillas, onion, cilantro and your choice of steak, pork, or chicken. All served with green salsa. The chicken was super moist and flavorful -- highly recommended. The taco was fresh and NOT greasy. The flavors of the meat and salsa were excellent. On the menu but didn't try: sopes, enchiladas, and tasty lookin' tortas. Skip Taco Bell and Chipotle nearby -- your wallet, waistline, and taste buds will thank you -- and try Chris's.

This place has some of the best tacos I've ever had, and the ice cream is great, too! Jaime, the owner, is extremely nice. I go here every time I'm in the area. Definitely try this place! I recommend the chorizo tacos!

The owner is named Jaime and he is from El Salvador. He kept the name from years ago when it was owned by someone else! Food is fantastic and low key. I get enchiladas and then top it with cilantro, crema, and avocado for the same price. He is always smiling and friendly and always seems to have a funny story while I wait if I engage him in conversation. He loves running his business and I love to support it! Small and family owned w fresh ingredients/made how you like it instead of being slathered in red sauce from a can. He also serves good icecream if you go for a stop on the Monon but I think the food is the reason to go! There are about 8 tables as well but I've never had a problem sitting down if I eat in. 5 stars for value, friendly service, and definitely taste.

Very good ice cream. Met the owner, Jaime. He was very nice. My girlfriend and I were trying to decide between White Russian and Mango ice cream. We ended up going with the White Russian and he decided to give us a complimentary scoop! Very delicious! Will definitely be back.

Great place to stop during a long hot bike ride. The tacos are awesome and cheap but the ice cream is delicious and they offer some surprising flavors, such as coconut, which is amazing! Try it. Now.

Great spot for amazing steak tacos. The salsa's are spot on and the tortilla is the star. Really great to find an authentic taco spot!

I would have never stopped by if it wasn't for Yelp. Exterior is truly misleading. Food is definitely authentic Mexican. Very tasty but menu is limited.

I must have driven by this place 1,000 times before I finally stop in to try it. I was expecting kind of a Taco Bell-ish experience. Boy, was I wrong! The food menu is limited....but EVERYTHING is done EXTREMELY well. I wish more restaurants adopted this model...concentrating on what they do best, and quit trying to be all things to all people. The tacos...real, authentic, Mexican tacos...are simply amazing. Wow, so, so, SO good. The enchiladas are also outstanding, as is everything else we've got. The owners/managment/staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and greet you like an old friend. And, we're always full after dinner, so we've not tried the Ice Cream yet. Chris's truly is a gem in Indy!

Chris' Ice Cream is a great little spot just off the Monon (perfect for a destination ride!) that seems to get overlooked a lot. They have ice cream - some of it home made in house - frozen yogurt, smoothies, etc., which makes it a great place to visit while out riding your bike. There are bike racks at the 86th Street rest area. But what REALLY drew Rick and I in the first time was the fact that they serve authentic Mexican food. You read that right...Mexican food! We've been there a few times but I realized I hadn't written a review yet. I absolutely LOVE their steak tacos. They keep it simple and authentic: strips of steak in a tortilla with diced onions - heavenly! You can pick which kind of tortillas you want (flour vs corn) and you can request cilantro or none. I always get mine with cilantro. Delicious! And the salsa verde they bring out to go with it? Outstanding! Some of the best I've ever tasted. Of all the times we've been there, we had never tried the ice cream...until yesterday! And they will let you sample every flavor they have if you want to! Some of the ice cream flavors are made in-house (Cinnamon...one of my faves!) and there are some unique flavors that are often hard to find (Rum Raisin - it is FANTASTIC!) The only reason I did not give them five stars is that sometimes, depending on the person working the grill, the steak tacos (all I've ever ordered here :) can be inconsistent from visit to visit. All in all, Chris' is one of those hidden little gems in Indianapolis with a kind and friendly staff that always seems to be glad you stopped by.

Their icecream is so beautiful that it makes my eyes water in joy but their authentic Mexican menu? That's also a thing of beauty. Good proportions, friendly service and great value. I used to visit this place quite a lot as a kid and even though ownership has changed hands it's still one of my most favorite places to go.

Very friendly service. I had the chicken enchiladas. The sauce was a salsa verde with chunks of chicken inside. The chicken was all white meat and tasted of high quality. No sides come with the meal and I think it cost $7-$8. I felt it was a little expensive for about four enchiladas without a side of rice or beans. Also, the only food issue is that the actually entree temperature could have been warmer, not spicy but the actual food temperature. I would return and try another dish. The restaurant has booths and tables.

I've been to Chris's several times for ice cream, but today I finally got to try their delicious food. I tried the chicken enchiladas, which were about $5.50 for three enchiladas in thick corn tortillas, with a spicy green habanero sauce on top, and topped with a touch of sour cream and cheese. They were so spicy and delicious, and they actually tasted kind of healthy, not greasy at all! As always, their service is wonderful, very fast and super friendly. It even cheered me and my mom up after a nightmarish salon visit. Highly, highly recommended.

I love this place. Despite "Ice Cream" being in the name, the best things at this place come from their small food menu. The menu is small, but diverse and everything is excellent. The best thing on the menu is the sopes dish. You can choose between carne asada, chicken or pork. The dish comes with 3 sopes, try one of each! I usually cut out the sour cream to let the queso fresco do its thing. The sopes are fresh and the texture is great. They also have an awesome selection of different sodas. The owner is usually there every day. He is the guy in his mid to late 40's. He is incredibly nice and enjoy's talking to his customers. I highly recommend this place. The sopes and enchiladas are just as good as La Parada. The ice cream is good too!

Delicious!!! After visiting on a Friday night I found myself wanting to return before the weekend was over. I had a a steak burrito and my wife had the chicken enchiladas. Watch out, the enchiladas can vary in spice between visits. Depending on your tolerance you may want to ask how spicy they have been prepared.

I've passed this place hundreds of times since they changed from just ice cream to ice cream and Mexican food. As were were driving up and down looking for a place to eat outside of our usually places, feeling adventurous, we gave it a try. They have a limited menu and the place could use a little fixing but it wasn't heinous. We ordered a couple burritos and a carnitas quesadilla. It was reasonably priced and our orders came pretty quickly. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was one of those burritos "as big as your head". Filled with rice, beans, meat of your choice, cheese, lettuce and maybe some other stuff - not sure. It was very tasty and cheap. I wish they had fountain drinks but they only have a cooler with the smaller sizes of bottled sodas. My daughter's quesadilla w/carnitas was very big and generously filled. Normally she could eat one or two but she wasn't even able to finish half of the one she got here. We stayed for ice cream. Me, coconut and coffee scoops. My husband had the mango and coconut scoops and my daughter had cookies and cream. They were delicious. My husband has asked to go back twice already. He rarely asked to go back to a particular restaurant so that says a lot. While I wouldn't say they are fabulous, I will say that if you need a quick bite that is cheap and not full of artificial yuck, you can't beat this place. We will definitely go back again.

The mexican stuff here is fantastic... authentic ? Well the Frito Bandito himself was dining during my visits (s) actually, I probably couldn't discern authentic Mexican from Baltic Latvian..but..darn good...fresh ingredients...super nice people I don't eat much ice cream... preferring to save my calories in a beer bank instead. Nice that this place is centrally located right near the monon and JJ's.

Ok..so you may be thinking... "An ice cream shop that also serves Mexican food?" Just stay with me here. This hidden gem is located right next to the Monon and so I stopped in for an ice cream. The owner was super friendly and told me that all of the ice cream is homemade and he offered to let me try them all. Honestly, they were all delicious and super rich, with just the right texture. After choosing between coconut (packed with coconut flakes, sooo good) and pistachio, I decided on pistachio. A small in a sugar cone was only $2 and was just the right amount for me. I noticed all of the larger sizes were under $4. Definitely worth stopping in!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
