If you're familiar with the Chef Dan's Southern Comfort Food Truck, then you already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this fairly new Irvington establishment that continues Chef Dan's dedication to bringing Indy some mighty fine Louisiana and Mississippi cuisine. Chef Dan's Southern Comfort is located in a strip center right on East Washington Street, though its sign is fairly easy to miss so you do have to pay attention. There's a decent parking lot to the side of the building that includes one non-ADA compliant parking spot that is clearly marked. The building itself is older, but for the most part accessible. The entryway has a fairly heavy door with a bit of a lip that you have to get over, but it's pretty workable. As you go in, you enter the primary dining area with the ordering counter straight ahead. There's another room to the side that I'm guessing could be easily used for a family gathering or even small party. You do not have to order at the counter - that's really designed for "to go" orders. They do offer table service. If I had to describe the menu, I'd likely go - Louisiana - Adventurous Mississippi - Fairly typical Southern cuisine. The Louisiana side features such items as Po' Boys, Crawfish, Jambalaya, Red Beans n' Rice, and a variety of others. The Mississippi side includes such fare as meatloaf, a Southern fried chicken sandwich, a variety of other fish/chicken options, and you can even get a burger or a pulled pork sandwich. With most of the sandwiches and meals, you either get one or two side items. I opted for a Southern fried chicken sandwich with cajun fries along with my usual unsweetened iced tea. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, spicy but not unbearably so, with moist and tender meat and a flavor that really lingers. If I had to change one thing, it'd be to move away from what is a fairly basic bun that doesn't add much to the flavor. The cajun fries are definitely cajun fries - incredible flavor, a decent-sized order, and very nicely complemented the sandwich. The unsweetened tea was also quite good and I did get my always desired refill. Chef Dan's really excelled in the service department. I was greeted by Gracie, who actually introduced herself and seemed happy to be there. She was friendly, energetic, helpful, and had a spirit that was contagious. I watched her encounters with others and she was consistently friendly and really on top of the customer service. I always believe that excellent service makes you want to return and I left Chef Dan's already contemplating my next visit. The decor in the restaurant is incredibly casual, though definitely not to the Papa Roux level of casual. It feels like an old smalltown diner from the South. There's some local artwork on the walls, including some for sale, along with tables on both sides (no booths). The decor is incredibly casual, but clean. I did notice that a couple of the electrical outlets were lacking covers - which I don't think is a code violation, but it definitely is a safety hazard. It was a minor thing, but I'll admit it struck me as such an easily fixable thing that it kind of bothered me. It also seemed a bit chilly in the side room, though it's worth noting that it's a bit chilly in Indy today. My meal came in at right about $11 without a tip. I'd consider this a pretty decent value as I had a good meal and left full but not stuffed. If I were to rate Chef Dan's solely on the service, it would easily be a five-star experience. Gracie was a joy. The food? Probably in the 4-4.5 range and the atmosphere/decor in the 4 range. Right now, I'm going with a 4-star rating with the solid expectation that this restaurant that has only been open a little over 3 months will continue to improve and be knocking on a 5-star one of these days. With very good food at a fair price along with stellar customer service, I'm definitely impressed and I'll definitely be back.

Second time here, glad to have a place like this in Irvington! Ordered the deux fries the first time and they were a big enough order to take the place of my lunch! And very tasty too! They had the perfect amount of spice! Today I ordered a cup of Gumbo. I have to admit, my first Gumbo experience was at yats. Chef dan's gumbo is now my favorite. The cup was enough for one person, but I still got a side of Cajun fries and they were perfectly seasoned and just the right amount of salty I was craving.

What a fabulous place for Cajun food in Indianapolis! We were originally looking for the food truck, and found the restaurant instead. The workers were really nice to let us order and eat at the restaurant even though we arrived 15 minutes before closing. - Cajun Seafood Platter ($14) - Fried goodness with catfish, crawfish, and shrimp. Came with coleslaw and fries. Very generous portions with the crawfish. The food wasn't too salty either. - Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich ($9) - My husband approved the dish since the chicken was really moist. He wished the bun was not the standard hamburger bun. He chose the side of the collard greens which has meat in it (not vegetarian friendly). We even met Chef Dan as he thanked us for coming. He was really friendly and talked about his culinary background to us.

See this is why I love yelp. I would have never found this place without you guys. Right off E. Washington, this place is not easy to spot, a larger sign would help Dan, I got in right before closing time and entered through the kitchen. I'm here! On the menu board you have Mississippi and Louisiana, the wife and I both went Louisiana, I got a bowl of Jambalaya and should have got a cup, huge portion, she got the red beans and rice/w half order of gumbo we also got a side of dirty rice for the kid. Everything was excellent, this is real deal Louisiana cooking. All the sides you would expect they even have gator. Everybody is gracious and welcoming, prices are fair, place is inviting, two thumbs up for Chef Dan.

The name says it all "Southern Comfort". We've been "comforted" here several times and have enjoyed every choice we've made. I find myself craving the greens with the sweet little cornbread square. We've tried the rib tips, meatloaf, fried pork chops, the Cajun seafood platter, mac and cheese, green beans, candied yams, Banana Puddin', Bread Puddin' with caramel sauce, Beignets, Sweet Potato Pecan Pie, and lemon cake. I like the sweet tea. Everything has flavor and seasoning. No bland here. If you think we've tried everything, that's fine. We will just start doing repeats. The staff has always been very kind to us, and we love that it's in the Irv!

There's no need to hunt Chef Dan down in his food truck anymore. He's set up shop on the main drag in Irvington, and I am THRILLED! The number one reason you need to visit Chef Dan's is the authenticity. Everything inside the restaurant screams Bayou, from the decor to--more importantly--the food. When you're cooking your Southern grandmother's recipes in your restaurant, you're doing something right. Chef Dan divides his menu into two sections: "Mississippi" and "Louisiana". I went the Louisiana route with a bowl of red beans and rice, Cajun squash and zucchini, and banana pudding. I can sum up my meal in one word: WOWZA! My main and side were both well-seasoned with Cajun spices without being overpowering. The banana pudding was straightforward yet fantastic, especially because of the vanilla wafers and sliced bananas. I licked my bowls clean! Walking out of Chef Dan's I made a mental list of dishes I need to try on my next visit. It may have been my first time there but it was definitely not my last!

An amazing addition to Irvington. A smart menu and well thought out restaurant is very inviting. The bayou like decor is cool too. The staff in front and back were friendly and prompt, we appreciated the attention to details. The chef Dan burger is well balanced and seasoned correctly, so many large burgers are simply salted, not so here! You've gotta try it, it's great!! The Cajun seasoned potato and sweet potato fries are the tops!! Served with a nice dipping sauce. The greens: melt in your mouth yummy! Red beans and rice: perfect and rich! Yams: sweet of course! Stop in!!!

I've always been a big fan of Chef Dan's food truck and I am happy to report that their brick and mortar addition is definitely on the same playing field! I sat in for lunch just missing their $10 lunch special by a few minutes but still managed to leave with a happy stomach and wallet! I ordered a cup of the gumbo and an order of their crawfish beignets. Both of which were amazing. The gumbo was piping hot and so flavorful! My server was super attentive and friendly. The decor is also adorable!

Holy moly! This is definitely my new favorite place in the Irv. We had never ever tried Chef Dan's food truck for some reason, but since they've moved into their new spot on Washington Street, we've been going about once per week. I'm not ashamed. Even though Cajun food is not usually one of my go-to choices, everything at Chef Dan's is delicious. Pulled pork? Smoked, great texture, delicious. Cajun fries? Great spice rub, bountiful, delicious. Cajun penne pasta? Creamy and delicious. The same is true for the mac and cheese, any of their chicken options (amazing breading), jambalaya, beignets, sweet potato pecan pie...it's all delicious. The prices are borderline unbelievable considering how much food you get--each entree is easily two meals, even for someone who likes eating as much as I do. The only thing that could use a little work is the coordination of the front of house. There have been a few times that our phone-in orders were incorrect or not put in, so be sure to have them confirm what you've chosen. However, despite the problems, the staff have been exceedingly friendly and appropriately apologetic (and benevolent with free dessert!) when they've made a mistake. I'm sure these issues will resolve with time. Chef Dan and his lovely wife Allison are great hosts. The restaurant itself has a great interior--really creatively and well decorated with a genuinely (not kitschy) home-like atmosphere. Love the menu board, vintage saxophone, and lighting! They have a side room that would be great for a large group/family gathering. They have a kids menu that has junior versions of the entrees, tame enough for kiddo tastebuds but not completely boring/bland food. Their hours are also pretty fabulous, too--definitely open as much if not more often than some of the other restaurants on the Irv strip. Chef Dan's, you have captured our hearts (and bellies and wallets). Can't wait to work my way through the whole menu!

I'm bragging here a bit but I suggested Chef Dan's for our work lunch group. The guys tried it and reported back that the food was great but that they seemed to still be figuring out if they were a food truck or a restaurant. The second time we went back the identity crisis was gone. Nice seating and the wait staff are bringing out the food. I had the seafood platter and I was really surprised! Very lightly battered which I am a huge fan of considering I would prefer no batter. And make sure you save room for the sweet potato pie. It is so rich and delicious you will not regret it I promise! Reports from my friends for jambalaya, red beans and rice are excellent also. They claim the flavor and portion rivals Yats! The Shrimp Po Boy got a great review also and my friend claimed it was betters than P's. Give this place a shot, you won't regret it!

Reasonable prices, high quality food, and fast service. What's not to love? My perfect order: the fried chicken sandwich (pounded thin and expertly breaded with what appear to be seasoned corn flakes), French fries (always crisp and quite possibly the best seasoning in town) with mac and cheese (a little flat but very cheesy - add some hot sauce!) and washed down with root beer in a glass bottle. Great, now I'm hungry again!

Best cajun food ever! I first found out about this place when I ate from Food Truck Fridays on Georgia Street. My boyfriend and I loved it so much we decided to check out the restaurant a week later, and we were not disappointed! Friendly workers and reasonably priced food. I ordered the crawfish po'boy with coleslaw, while my boyfriend ordered the same only with jambalaya. All of it was freakin' delicious. We will be back!

I ordered the alligator po'boy! It was great! It had just the right amount of meat on it and the bread was delicious with amazing sauce. My side item were the collard greens which I would highly reccommend!

Take the time to go visit with Chef Dan and the crew soon. Its a great place to have GUMBO! Yum! Word from the better half it rocked. I had the Mississippi Pulled Pork. Wow! The BBQ Sauce had the right balance of sweet and savory. So beat feet and enjoy the amazing food at Chef Dan's. This is an order at the counter and the food comes to you. We happened upon Chef Dan being open for a trial run over Valentine's Day. What a pleasant surprise. This restaurant is a fantastic addition to Irvington. This will wake up the competition in Irvington. Thank you Chef Dan for bringing your magic to the village of irvington. The longer and more detailed review is on tripadvisor.com As of this writing (02-14-2015) Chef Dan was open for a trial run and was cooking out of the food truck. Kitchen will be open in a few days. For now and the next two weeks call ahead or hit the website for official opening times. If you are coming from another part of the state or city it is well worth your time. Hey folks....You can order online for pickup: chefdansindy.com Skip the crowds of the Northside and Downtown Indy, along with the long waits at the typical eateries. Come to the quiet village within the city and enjoy some quaint atmosphere with an edge.

Catfish Etouffe was on point, mac n cheese was only slightly behind my wifes (wink, wink), and even the kids chicken tenders were good. I definitely will be returning. I'm glad i just don't have to wait for the truck to come downtown anymore.

Food was good. Obscenely overpriced for the portions. Nonexistant atmosphere. Dont have a chicken poboy??? With Papa Roux magnificence only 1 mile away, there is no reason to come back here. Ever.

Really tasty. We drove down from Carmel and it was worth it. Chef Dan came out to greet us. He shared his expansion plans with us. We should see him on the North side next year. YUMMM!!!!!

Love Chef Dans. Now if only I could bring myself to try something other than the chicken sandwich I could give you a fully balanced review. But it's hard to go to Chef Dans and not have the chicken sandwich. I have friends who have other things and love them, but for me, their chicken sandwich, Cajun fries or Mac n Cheese or Sweet potato side rocks my world. And it helps that the people are awesome too.

Food is amazing. Best Mac n cheese I ever had. If you order kids' burger, though, it comes fully dressed. The Cajun mayo was a little too spicy for my 3 year old. Also, no changing tables in the restrooms so be prepared if you have little ones.

Oh how I miss Chef Dan's!!! If you like for real Southern Food, I've not had better (outside of my own) yet. They have a food truck, I wish they would hurry up and send a driver out...their Mac n' Cheese is the thickest creamist Mac n' Cheese I've ever had. Fried Catfish, Po'Boy Sandwich, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Red Beans and Rice, Jambalaya, Crawfish...it's that deal. The highlight out of everything that they have is the Swampwater....there isn't anything like it. Perfect blend of sweet and tangy...Arnold Palmer??? Who is that? It ain't got nothing on Swampwater!!! P.S. Chef Dan's if you are reading this please bring your food truck back over to Keystone area so we can get some good eating on our lunch breaks, please and thank you.

I've been to chef dan's restaurant twice now. Had the southern fried chicken sandwich and the andouille sausage po'boy. Both hit the spot. The sausage po'boy just had everything right going on with it - the heat from the sausage and Cajun mayo cooled by the coleslaw. The Cajun fries were perfectly seasoned and lastly the food was pretty reasonably priced , both entrees I had came with one side for 9 dollars. Definitely going to be coming back for more!

First time visiting the new location. Definite hole in the wall feel which I like. Nice size menu with decent prices. Fast and very friendly service! For $42 we had: catfish filet dinner with dirty rice and Cajun seasoned fries - good portion size, well seasoned, great fries, dirty rice a bit dry but good. Crawfish etouffee - portion size good, great crawfish flavor, would have liked it a little more spicy but that just may be me. Shrimp po'boy - to die for, huge crunchy shrimp, great bread, flavorful sauce. Mac and cheese - good, better than most, I'm just really picky about this side item, but would definitely get again. Collard greens - perfectly cooked, seasoned well, great item. Banana pudding - completely addictive, chunky texture, fresh, amazing. Bread pudding with caramel sauce - even better than the pudding - great texture, not too soft or too hard with thick homemade sauce at that perfect amount, could live off of this! Overall we were very pleased with our visit and will be back. Next time trying the alligator po'boy!
