Went here last night with my son. Very nice atmosphere. Food was typical Mexican food - and was very good. The service was excellent. We will be back!

I like it and Mauricio is a great personable server. Chips were fresh tasting with individual sauces so there you nasty double dippers! A no double dipping Mexican Restaurant!! Chicken Fajitas are ample sized with the chicken cooked perfectly. The Arroz con Pollo is simple but tasty. This is a comfortable sit down restaurant with a nice bar area and separate dinning room decorated nicely in earth and wood tones. Salads here aren't the best because of the shredded lettuce but venture on to anything else on the menu.

We visited Mecates Mexican Grill while driving through Huntington, IN. It's a typical Mexican restaurant offering burritos, enchiladas and tacos. As soon as we were seated we were greeted by our server with a basket of chips and a carafe of salsa. Mecates tortilla chips We started with the Jalapeno Poppers starter. They were pretty big and plump. The appetizer menu also included cheese sticks and chicken tenders for anyone who isn't interested in the Mexican selections. A little more chain restaurant-like than an authentic Mexican restaurant, but the poppers were pretty good. There are plenty of options for Veggie Heads including potato enchiladas, spinach quesadillas and veggie fajitas. There is also a large menu of items with beef and chicken, including a Beef Burrito Gordo which one of my tablemates (a non-Vegetarian) ordered. It was one of the largest burritos I have ever seen! I ordered one the Vegetarian platters. My plate had a potato burrito, a bean tostada and guacamole salad. I thought it was pretty good. The guacamole salad was a little disappointing. I am not sure what I was expecting but it was just a garnish of shredded lettuce and sliced tomato with a dollop of guacamole. Not sure if it was worthy of being advertised as a menu item on the platter. Maybe just stating "a side of guacamole" would have been enough. The burrito was pretty good. It was filled with chunks of baked potato and red peppers and rolled up with creamy cheese in a flour tortilla. Chad ordered the Veggie Burrito which was stuffed with mushrooms, spinach, onions, peppers and tomatoes, then topped with sauce and cheese. Though not as big as the Burrito Gordo, it was certainly filling with a side of refried beans and rice. He enjoyed it. We enjoyed Mecates. It's a great choice with its only competition for Mexican food coming from the Taco Bell across the street. Mecates is certainly steps above the fast food joint. However, like most casual Mexican restaurants, it is obvious that they use the microwave to heat and cook their food. The food was good, it wasn't above and beyond. Still, Mecates is worth a visit again.

So pleased with the service food and prices. I had a burrito special and my son had fajitas. Loved the beans in the burritos! Chips and salsa were good too!

Seems to have went down hill. The tortilla soup was good. The burrito deluxe was terrible. Couldn't get over the smell of the dish that seemed spoiled. Took one bite and couldn't stomach another. Sent it.back and was the most expensive bite of a Mexican dish ever The staff was attentive otherwise to us and nice Other options in the area are better Went again jan 2015 It was worse this time meat was burnt and tortilla soup was cold Worse is the manager shrugged his shoulders and said he Didn't care Don't go to this restaurabt

The food was generally tasteless. Had the seafood chimichanga that was described as full of crab and shrimp. Okay maybe there was a typo at the printers but I have never considered imitation crab meat, crab. The beans had no seasonings and tasted like canned vegetarian beans. The guacamole was simply avocados mashed up, no seasoning. The avocado on the shrimp salad were brown. The final slap in the face was the bill that note 1 coke, 1 diet coke, and 1 ice tea. All 1.99 each. We had cherry coke, sprite and water. The server was demure and uncaring. Never came back to check on us. This is the first restaurant that I can remember lots of leftovers and none packed to go.

The building and atmosphere are very nice on the inside. I've never had a bad waiter here. But the food is just ok and a bit overpriced compared with other Mexican restaurants in town.

Can't really tell you what the entrees are like here, however, can tell you that you will be lucky to ever see them. Went in and ordered some soft-drinks and got chips and salsa. The salsa tasted like tomato puree out of a can and was asked waiter for some spicy salsa or something to liven up what they had. He muttered as he walked off, never to be seen again. After 30-45 minutes of looking for the waiter, my party decided that the menu offerings didn't appear to be anything really special, so I went to the front, found the cashier, paid for the drinks and we left to try out Los Amigos. Based on my experience here, you can expect to be ignored, get pretty tasteless salsa, cold chips and not much else. There are better choices available in any direction from here, take them.

Even though they were not busy, the service was poor. The burrito was salty, the taco was not flavorful. The tamale was good! The decor was nice. We probably will not come back.

I'm not a big fan of Mexican faire (ground beef, beans, rice and corn meal, anyone?), but Mecates is quite good. Service was outstanding each of the 3-4 times that I've been there. The other reviewer must have been there on an off day.

Everything is always fresh. Service is quick and efficient. The other reviewer obviously got there on an off day. I've been there dozens of time and always walked away full and happy.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
