When they said french vanilla cake with Creme brûlée filling....that got my attention. I Tasted it and was very impressed! It was so delicious! I chose that for two layers and went with chocolate cake with chocolate mousse for the remaining layer. They were very helpful and friendly and the delivery went perfectly. I only wish I got to have more then a bite on my wedding day!

We had one of Karen's cakes when we got married 12 years ago, and Karen has been baking for our entire family every since, for every event! I disagree that her cakes are dry - make sure you ask for a taste of the cake you are interested in. Our favorite is yellow with fresh strawberry filling and Karen's special blend whipped cream icing. We love Karen and Ed!!

They did my wedding cake, groom cake, and anniversary cake. I recommend them to anyone for any occasion. Never had an issue and Tammy is the best!!!

A great place to get your pastries. Today, I came here to get my PACZKI. Everyone loved them. Any other day, I love to come get our fresh donuts and cookies. Anytime I have to bring some fresh pastries this is the place to pickup them up! Great local place for some good pastries!

I first went to Cakes by Karen in high school for paczkis, and when it came time to decide on a wedding cake vendor in 2011, they were my first place I went to for cake tasting, and I was sold. We didn't want anything too wild for the design, just a three-tier cake. We ended up with a gorgeous 3 tier with flowers in our wedding colors. The cake was delicious- French vanilla cake with creme brûlée filling and white cake with their raspberry filling- all with their signature buttercream. The cake was delicious, and even was good after being in a freezer for a year on our anniversary. We ended up getting the same flavors last October for my parents' 30th anniversary party. I made sugar skulls as a cake topper, and it was decorated so well to go along with it. We've had fantastic experiences in working with Cakes by Karen, and I recommend them highly!

I chose this bakery to do my wedding cake for my wedding in April, 2014. I must admit, it wasn't my first choice. But, a family member has been going to this bakery for a very long time and had very good things to say about the owner and quality of their treats. Let me start by saying that I was not a high maintenance bride; I didn't go do a cake tasting or look through extensive books about cakes or any of that nonsense. I simply emailed Tammy, explained what I want, and sent a picture of what I was looking for. I had no idea what flavors to pick, so she made some suggestions (which sounded delicious), and quoted me a price. I had a little over 50 people at my wedding, so I only needed a 2-tier cake. My top layer was Creme Brulee, the bottom layer was Strawberry cake with white chocolate mousse, and it was all iced in their special blend frosting (because it tastes like whip cream but doesn't need to be refrigerated). It was all very easy and I sent in a check for the cake as I didn't have time to go there myself. They delivered the cake for free (who doesn't love free?!) and when I saw it, it was exactly as I pictured it: beautiful. I had asked for a cake that fit my vintage-themed wedding, and this cake was perfect. Beautiful ivory and peach colors that were almost gradient-colored. So. Darn. Pretty. I first tasted the top tier (Creme Brulee) when my oh-so-devious husband smashed it in my face. As I was wiping it off my face and trying to get it out of my hair, I was tasting it (which sounds gross, but the cake was just so darn good). After cleaning myself up a bit I sat down and had a piece of both flavors and WOW were they amazing. I don't normally like frosting, but this frosting was delicious; not too sweet and not hard and nasty like fondant would have been. Perfect. All the guests that I talked to said they loved the cake, and a few even took a piece home with them (because I'm nice like that). Overall, I'm giving it 5-stars because: It was easy to order from and set up payment, the woman (Tammy) I emailed with was very helpful and friendly and quick to give great advice, FREE delivery, gorgeous cake, and most importantly delicious cake. NOM. I'd like to add that a few weeks before I ordered, I went to the bakery and ordered some Paczkis (since it was Mardi Gras). I had the fresh strawberry cream and OH.MY.GOD. They were seriously amazing. I've had a lot of paczkis (I'm starting to resemble their shape, I've had so many), and this was by far the most delicious. NOM.

The absolute best...I couldn't be more satisfied and so was my entire wedding party for the bridesmaids and grooms cookies. I'd definitely recommend this bakery. They take their time and make sure you get what you want They were decorated gorgeously and were so good

I made an appointment for a cake tasting. And at no time did they ask me what flavors I would like to try. When I got there, we had 4 flavors to choose from. Right off the bat, we eliminated 2 of them because they were chocolate. (we are having a chocolate fountain, we didn't want to get chocolate wasted) That left French vanilla cake with creme brûlée filling & white cake with raspberry. I was told the French vanilla was the most popular. I couldn't see why? It had no flavor. I asked if we could try anything else & was told no because it wasn't prepared. It was very dissapointing.

I wanted a special made cake for my daughter and found this business on Yelp. I contacted them by email and Tammy contacted me within two hours. As I was describing what I wanted, she rushed me off the phone and told me to bring CASH the next day. I was trying to ask if the business was wheelchair accessible before she got off the phone. This didn't sit well with me so I called the next day to see if the business was accessible and did they take debit cards. She said cash only but when I told her I was in a wheelchair, she offered no solution as to how I was going to meet with her and give her my business (money). It was all very nonchalant and I felt like I could be throwing my money away because of how rushed I felt. She seemed perturbed that I called her on the same number she used to call me the previous day. That did it for me. Even though on Yelp it says wheelchair accessible...IT ISN'T. I'm so fed up with businesses that advertise that and aren't. Do you know how much hassle it is to be led to believe a business is accessible and isn't? You literally have to turn around in your car and GO HOME. It's annoying. I wanted to give a local business my money but Tammy just didn't seem that interested in helping me.

We had our wedding cake, shower cake, & numerous other cakes made by Cakes by Karen, & they have all been amazing. Aside from tasting great, they are an absolute pleasure to work with. We live in Chicago, & the staff was always extremely fast to respond to emails & they were very accomodating. Our wedding cake was simply perfect, & we were told by many guests that it was the best wedding cake they ever had. I highly recommend the white cake, with creme brule filling, & non-dairy icing.

Nothing special for the price. Paid $80 for a birthday cake that was decorated so-so and the cookies were like cardboard. Not terrible but certainly not worth the hype.

Over 50 years ago my parents ordered there cake from this bakery, after celebrating there Anniversary I'll couple years ago we decided to get the cake from the same place. We came across one of the best bakeries in Northwest Indiana. As a child I grew up with Glen Park bakery and I truly missed it when it closed. This place bring back great memories. EVERYTHING TASTE GREAT & FRESH. I would mention my favorite thing to get but I don't want you to rush in and get them before I get there. You'll love this place give it a try

I received the wrong cake which we found out in the evening when we cut it,the next day I politely called to tell them and the owner was rude and blamed her store girls.I called the following day to verify what I ordered and she said she baked the cake herself on Saturday ,but I didn't order the cake till the following Monday.I must also say the cake was stale and decorated poorly and I ordered real whip cream and did not get it,basically she gave me a cake she had and hoped we would not notice. Beware bad business.

Wow! Small enough to love, this place is heavenly. You will walk into the intoxicatingly sweet aroma of "cookies and more." You will not want to walk out without a mix of assorted butter cookies frosted and decorated with pleaure and simplicity. The sweet aroma will bring you whirling back here week after week. They will wrap your baked goods in cute litte dainty white boxed with the right amount of wax paper covering and tidy the little boxed up with tape. I love every step of the way from picking out the cookies to its final packaging and all the while inhaling that sweet aroma of a bakery. This classic little bakery will treat you special and teach you to remember frugality in taste and sugary pleasure.

Forget the cakes by this infamous Karen person, she need to rename her bakery "Smiley Face Cookies by Karen"! For real- these cookies are like crack! What makes them even more delightful is I haven't been able to find them in any other city in which I've lived. That's fine, I just purchase 4 dozen when I go for a visit and bring them home and freeze them. No joke. I don't play when it comes to my smiley face cookies. These sugar cookies are almost the size of your palm and covered in the perfect tasting yellow frosting and chocolate eyeballs and smiley. They're not too crunchy, but not fall apart soft either, just the perfect consistency and the perfect balance of salty, buttery cookie batter to sweet frosting. Mmmmmm! She even goes all out and does other cookie shapes like bunnies, trees, hearts, etc. They usually match the seasons, but I'm a smiley face gal at heart. I adore these things! As an added bonus they're super cheap, like a buck and some change. Loving it! Keep up the good work Karen- I'm sure to be in at least once a year on my visits back home!

Three weeks before my daughter's 9 birthday we found out that she has a pretty severe allergy to wheat and dairy. And what is a kid's birthday without cake? I started to hunt high and low for a bakery that could make a cake without wheat or dairy. The only one I could find was more then an hour away from home. That was just too far a drive for a cake that I had no idea how it would even taste. A neighbor then recommended Cakes by Karen. I called and they said YES. They could do it. WELL....they sure did. And I have to say I was extremely impressed. The cake was moist and delicious. I kept waiting for my daughter to break out in hives because the cake was so darn good that I was sure we had been given the wrong cake. But we weren't. SO a HUGE THANK YOU to Cakes By Karen for saving the day and making a 9 year old girl's birthday perfect, and making her Mom and Dad happy too.

The cakes at Cakes by Karen are always fresh and delicious. The decorating is very inconsistant. I have ordered 3 cakes over the years and have learned that you have to give them very detailed instructions of how you want the cake to look, otherwise you might be disappointed. Also, they only take cash. Prices are reasonable and they offer gluten free options.

I ordered cupcakes from Karen and they were delish! The chocolate had a chocolate mousse filling and the white had crème brulée. I have to admit that 'special blend' frosting was not sweet enough for me but since the cupcakes were for Mom who does not like sweet, they worked. I LOVED the colors Karen did - purple and green. The frosting was swirled in a neat way - very pretty. I added my own floral junk and they looked amazing! She had these cool carriers that I dragged them around in and they survived my manhandling well. The next week I ordered a red velvet cake, again with special blend frosting. I have to agree with Marisa that the cake was bland. It was decorated with black and yellow balloons - I did not want to pay $50 to get black frosting. That said, $38 for a half sheet seems pricey. And it did not help that the cake was for my husband's 50th birthday party in a bar. Turns out that cake and beer don't appeal to our drunk buds... I'd order from Karen again but would get the cupcakes with filling and a sweeter frosting. BTW, Cash ONLY unless you order 2 weeks a head for your check to clear.

LOVE this place!!!!! I have been going here over 10 years after being introduced to this bakery while tasting cakes for my wedding. Today, I picked up a cake I ordered for "Teacher's Appreciation Week". Not a crumb left...you guys outdid yourselves once again. Thanks for the great cakes!!!

The best bakery in this area IMO. Our family has been getting her cakes for parties for years and they've always been out of this world. My favorite has to be the atomic cake, so moist & delicious. If this place was just down the street from me I'd be in trouble.

I couldn't believe the number of different cakes they do there. If you find a design you like, just take the picture in and they will try to do it for you. The customer service is great. And the cakes, cookies and everything else is sooooo good. I love this bakery.

I have to say that I was so utterly impressed with Cakes by Karen. Honestly, from the outside you can be fooled by the window display. (Hint.... Karen please upgrade your window display to match your fabulous cakes) But her cakes are so amazing. Always fresh and her decorations are unique. The service is top notch as well. Last week I called at 6:30 AM to order a last minute birthday cake for the same day. They not only honored the request but the cake was a big hit. Today I just ordered 2 cakes for my daughter's graduation party and they were so helpful and gave lots of ideas. I suggest all to try this bakery if you live in the area

Love Love Love! My wedding cake was AWESOME! And people are still talking about it! People that my in-laws on the northside of Chicago wanted to know if they would cater to them up there! Very excellent cakes! The frosting was so tasty. I HATE sweet frosting and their blend of butter cream and whipped cream was sooo gooooood! People are still talking about my cake and it has been a year since my reception. We had cakes from there since and they have all been excellent.
