Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I have eaten here quite a few times, only because it is convenient. I've finally put my foot down. I won't be returning. Slllllooooow service, blah food. Owners are great people, but unfortunately, I'm not there to chat with the owners. I'm there to eat. $14 for a strawberry chicken salad that isn't even tossed. You have to toss it yourself. Not only that, but it's not bigger than a side salad. I've never sat down with anyone to eat who has raved about their food. I might go back to sit outside for a cocktail bc the patio is fun, but I will eat before I go.

Fun decor, great location, excellent food, and good service. A place that will let you sit and talk and not rush you out. Feels like a totally different experience than a typical franchise restaurant or even the trendy place of the moment. A place to enjoy dining and not just be processed per the usual customer formula.

Wow it seems the same things are being said. And I can not believe the owners and managers just read reviews from paying customers and ignore them. I want to love this place. It's beautiful and different than any other restaurant around. The drinks are great. Sadly it's hard to find a "bartender" that can make a good Manhattan and its always great here. The waitresses are awful. Every time. They clearly don't want to be there and for some reason do not care if you are happy so obviously they don't work for tips or to make their customers happy. I work with the public... Here's a tip- if you are having a bad day no one else should know that. And customers do not care about your problems. It wouldn't hurt to try and make your appearance a little better. It's just sad really. The food is good from what I've had. Skimpy but tastes good.

Oh so amazingly delicious. For an appetizer we had the baked cheese in marinara which is goat cheese, romano and fontinella in marinara sauce and bread for spreading it on. So delicious and when we took home our left overs the server gave us extra bread for it. I had the sea food alfredo. It was amazing and there was so much of it that it made more than another full meal for me. My husband had the lasagna and was very pleased with it. Also more than he could eat. We also noticed that they had a fine gelato selection! We were too full to enjoy it, but we'll definitely be back to try it! Another nice thing about Macri is that they have 3 rooms and you can choose which dining experience you want. Two have televisions in them, we chose the one without. It had pretty string lights and big windows.

I always loved Macri's Deli when I was growing up in South Bend. It's been awhile since I've been to the new Villa Macri in Heritage Square. I am happy we decided to have dinner here on Saturday night. We asked to sit on the patio near the fountain. They have a beautiful covered patio with lights and quiet music. Our service was fantastic! The host at the front, our server, and the food runner were accommodating and professional. I split the Pork Osso Bucco with red potatoes and side salad. They went ahead and split the salad and entree. I could not believe the portion size! I would highly recommend this dish and the pomegranate balsamic salad dressing. Next time I will try to save room for dessert. Overall-- great service and amazing food selection. I will be back to Villa Macri very soon!

After a few visits I would definitely visit for lunch and beer in the Theatre Room (aka sports bar). The location is great for groups and the food is fine (on par with Olive Garden). The staff usually seems overwhelmed, but tries to be attentive.
(3)Stephanie M.
We went to Villa Macri for the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight event in the sports theatre room. It was amazing! The food, drinks, atmosphere were awesome! My husband and I just moved to Granger and this was our first date out. He gave me a 12/10 for planning! Thank you for a great night!

High prices, edible food, small portions. If this is the best Italian food that Mishawaka has to offer, maybe it's better to eat at home.
(2)AJ R.
I echo what all of the other reviewers have said. The mediocre food and service at this restaurant does not live up to the beautiful decor and atmosphere. I have been there three times over the past two years and left wishing I had gone to Olive Garden instead each time. Macris used to be a South Bend staple. I don't know what went wrong with this place.
(2)CIndy A.
I have had dinner here twice and both times the food was excellent as was the service. The portion sizes are appropriate and one does not leave hungry. The decor is beautiful, and the atmosphere is pleasant. We have no complaints and will eat here again. It is much better than restaurants such as Olive Garden.
(4)Cathy M.
Admittedly, I was a bit nervous to try Villa Macri after reading some of the yelp reviews. However, we were quite pleased with our experience. Our server, Megan, was delightful. She was patient as we asked a lot of questions about the drink and dinner menus, and prompt with food and drink refills. Drink specials are also available on weekends, which is a refreshing change as most restaurants only offer specials during the week. The guys had beer and mixed drinks, while we ladies started with martinis. The martini list was great! I tried the orange dreamsicle, while my sister had the s'mores martini. My only negative comment on the drinks is that our glasses were only about 2/3 full. Typically, martini glasses are filled to the top. Wine glasses were less than half full. I'd recommend either the restaurant fill those glasses higher, or just use smaller ones. My sister also made the same comment about her drinks. But, this was relatively minor. We started with the spinach artichoke appetizer. It was served with fresh bread and quite yummy. Cheesy on top, but I love cheese, so it was fine by me! Our entrees were recommended by the server, and we were all pleased. I had the Chicken Picatta - which was a large two breast portion. My dining partners had butternut squash ravioli, chicken george, and steak george. Everyone was pleased with their meals. Although we did get a side of potatoes that was way too seasoned. Ugh... Having been to two other Italian restaurants recently, (Olive Garden and Mia Francesca, Chicago) I will admit this is better than Olive Garden, but not quite up to the standards of the Chicago-based Francesca's restaurants. However, for the South Bend area, I found it to be a more-than-sufficient choice.

I haven't been there a lot but when I did go their I like the ambiance a lot I also liked the seating arrangement with the booths. Everyone had adequate personal space. Cuz I am a booth girl. I hate sitting in the center of the restaurant. Up underneath people. The food is very upscale, and of course........for an upscale price too. It reminds me of an Italian less seafood version of bonefish grill. But waaaaaaay bigger. One thing that's very different/ unique is the restaurant is constructed like a maze, with too many sections that are divided. Over all it's a NICE restaurant though, and in a nice location, but as far as good quality I think Papa Vino's and Carraba's is better and cheaper. When you go to villa macri's your paying for the ambiance with descent food, not bad food, but not mind blowing food either.Unless you make a lot of money I would only go on special occasions. Or a first date to impress someone.
(3)Jason R.
We've tried several times to give this place another shot, but the food is always mediocre, the service just OK, and the layout of this place is absurd. The old Macri's Deli was a local staple. The sports bar area is poorly thought out. Too bright, quiet, and usually empty. The menu is nothing special. I miss the old Macri's Deli days. The layout of this place is strange. Like the architect was drunk when it was drawn up. There's no flow, rhyme, or reason, and seems tacky. All the money dumped into this place was spent on naked angel statues, pavers, and hallways. It should have been spent on developing decent food and not a nightmare of a restaurant layout.
(2)Camey C.
Good bar, good service, good owner, good prices, okay food.
(4)David S.
The wife, daughter, mother-in-law and I went spelunking here at 1:00 today. We were seated in the sport viewing area . We were the only party there. Dark like Carlsbad, the mother-in-law had to use her headlamp in order to read the menu. The wait-person was fantastic and attended to all our desires. The echo in this expansive cavern lent to its ambiance and aided with correctness of our order. The wife and I had the "Old Chicago" sandwich which was Jake and Elwood's favorite, or so they said. Beef and sweet Italian sausage gave this lunch it's maximum flavor. Hot peppers & homemade chips just added to the perfection we had. If one had any complaints it would be that there was too much. You really got quantity for your Lira. The adult beverages were potent. The dirty martini that the daughter had was extra dirty and delicious. Will definitely return to this bistro but I doubt a ND football game day would be a good idea even if they have an abundance of mammoth flat screen tv's it could be over populated. ciao
(4)Joe S.
If you are looking for "the old Macri's" you are going to be disappointed. Which is too bad because this is a great Italian restaurant. The salads you start with are delicious, make sure you get the house dressing - pomegranate balsamic. We have had many excellent appetizers. The phyllo mozzarella is yummy as are the mussels (best in the area!). Tonight we had chicken parmigiana and it did not disappoint. And the wine list is exceptional considering the prices. Saturday special - $10 off any bottle of wine over $35. You can't beat it. If you come for the Italian food and skip the bar food and sandwiches you will be pleased.
(4)Mike S.
Was told by the owner to come by and try the food. Just a tip...... If you own a restaurant and have crappy service, don't invite people to come by. Only 5 other tables and we never ate. Waited 50 minutes and never even got our appetizer (waitress swore 3 times she was bringing it right out). Two other tables who arrived and were seated after us received their dinner. The waitress acted offended that we were leaving. They could have good food, but don't feel like being the first in line yet last to be served in order to try it. Papa Vinos all the way, baby!!
(1)Daniel C.
Overpriced, terrible service, and terrible quality. The quality of the food was definitely not worth the price. It took almost two hours for them to prepare the meal for our group. They ran out of half of the menu items and the waiter ended up doing more apologizing than providing any service. I had the steak which was overcooked. Several of the people in my group ordered pasta dishes, which were almost cold by the time they came out. Honestly if you want to shell out about $20 to $30 per entree you are better off going elsewhere.
(1)George V.
My daughter ate tues night at Villa Macri she had the manicotti she said it was good until 2:00 am. Then all hell broke loose at both ends anyone else out there hav the same prob I don't believe it was the stomach flu or virus
(1)Kristin M.
Clearly, they've invested a lot in this location. "Toscana Park" looks great, but the food at Villa Macri doesn't measure up. I've eaten in the dining room, and in the more casual section. Both times, I was disappointed. In the dining room, we ordered an eggplant appetizer. The server brought it to the table, and as he put it down, one of the three eggplant discs slid off the plate and onto the table. He just picked it up with his fingers and put it back. Ick. Another member of my party had pasta, and it arrived at the table all stuck together in a mass. There is nothing more basic than an Italian restaurant cooking pasta properly, and VM doesn't have that skill down yet. This is a fun place for a beer and some snacks, but don't expect authentic or well-prepared cuisine.
(2)C W.
Service very slow. Not many people. Food decent. Sandwiches good. 5 dollar martinis on wed s. Pricing is mid ranged but could be more expensive
(3)Laura B.
Since the Bloomington Macri's has closed, I think this is one of the last pantheons to serve unbeatable mozzarella sticks and breadsticks with neon spicy cheese in the state. Villa Macri has turned the original "Macri's Deli" idea into an entire crazy empire. This ornate building has four or five differently themed dining areas, but I always choose the "Martini Bar" for its high-backed booths and sports-channeled TVs. Whenever I see the menu, I immediately flip to the back for the original deli specialties. If I want decent Italian, there are other places to go (this is probably ok too). But when it comes to Macri's, I want the breadsticks, the Reuben, the Godfather, the Old Chicago or the BRT with some damn pretzels in a plastic basket, ok??? This past visit, my friend and I got the reubens with a "fruit coleslaw". I am normally not a coleslaw person at all, but this was hella amazing! Pineapple, slaw, mandarins, a sweet and spicy vinegar marinade and no creamy grossness! The reubens were piled high with corned beef, sauerkraut (LOVE), melty cheese and not too much Thousand Island between expertly toasty and buttery slices of rye. PERFECTION. Macri's, don't try to be more than you are, or at least keep the deli menu if you decide to keep changing. You're good enough, smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like you!
(4)John H.
In search of sandwiches and beer, we were disappointed to learn that Macri's Deli no longer existed. But hope remained, as newish-looking signs in "Toscana Park" said Macri's Deli was, in fact, still living somewhere. We spent about twenty minutes wandering aimlessly through a hellish sprawl of a lot before defying male stereotypes and asking for directions. A clerk at a sporting goods store informed us that Macri's Deli lived, just that it was now located within Villa Macri, the upscale looking Italian restaurant we'd driven by a couple times already. A deli within a ristorante? Whatever, we're famished and tip-off at ND is in 90 minutes. We parked, and running through sleet, we dashed by two closed entrances and finally entered through an exit. Looking like wet rats, we asked about the deli. "Well, we don't really have a deli anymore", the hostess noted, "but we do have deli-inspired items on our menu." Deli-inspired, ok. I'm not sure what that is, but let's do it. Seated in an enormous booth, we took in our surroundings. A very high ceiling, TVs showing sports, ND memorabilia, neon signs. But this was just one room. A more upscale section to the side saw better dressed patrons appearing to be engaged in fine dining, and there was also some kind of martini bar/lounge. So there are at least three different dining/drinking experiences available here, possibly more. But your menu lists everything. You can sit in the sports bar area and order lobster tail, or get a meatball sandwich in the fine dining room. This was not a good omen. Places that try to do everything tend not to do anything very well. And unfortunately the bad omen became a reality. I figured a BLT would be difficult to bungle, but it happened anyway. The bacon was limp and not plentiful enough, the lettuce limp. It wasn't really a bad sandwich, but it tasted like it'd been sitting out on the counter for ten minutes. Maybe this was the case; service was a bit spotty, and the wait for a BLT and a few burgers was much longer than it should have been. I think families will enjoy a place like this, and I'm sure there are some tasty items on their vast menu. But there's way too much happening here for anything to stand out, and the result is a strange, mixed atmosphere that's pure Velveeta.
(2)Eric T.
We tried this twice. The first time, we had pasta. The red sauce is a color rather than a flavor. Disappointing for a $17 chicken parm. We returned for a late lunch. The Philly cheese steak appears to be steak-ums and was served luke-warm (as were the fries). Arby's French dip is infinitely cheaper and served hotter. They also appear to refill water by letting the ice melt to form more.
(1)Mairin W.
Not so good. They charged $16 for a chicken marsala that consisted of a tiny unseasoned piece of chicken and tons of potatoes (also unseasoned). The meal came with a salad that was untossed- all accouterments were on the side as was the dressing. If I don't want an item in my salad or my dressing on the side, I will tell you; if I'm paying for a salad I want it tossed- I don't have salad tongs to toss it with at the table. The decor was pretty tacky too. We will not be coming back.
(2)L. B.
I was so excited to try this restaurant. The setting is beautiful and it provides a great atmosphere. The food and service...horrible. Our waitress was unprofessional, disorganized, and did not provide service that is to be expected. It took up to 15 minutes to get a drink, and then she brought the wrong one. She also forgot to bring appetizers that we had ordered, and by the time we received them almost 45 minutes had past. The food was overpriced, the quality was poor, and I couldn't believe how small the portions were. I had crab cakes that had to have been frozen and then thrown into the deep fryer. Horrible! The quality does not add up to the prices what so ever. I was eager to hopefully find a great restaurant in the area, and this place is definitely not it.
(1)John W.
Our company was in need of an upscale business lunch to host out of town customers and Villa Macri made this meeting a dining event AWESOME! I have dined at Jerry Macri's restaurants for 20+ years and have always found them to be enjoyable and above average in value. The four events the have hosted for us to be highly professional and more than reasonably priced -- this event for our customers received their VERY HIGH PRAISE. While we are able to meet and dine anywhere in the South Bend area, Villa Macri will easily be the choice!
(5)Charlie R.
wow... not had anything this bad in quite a while. The sausages in the soup were some pre-made little smokies. Not at all what I would expect in an Italian restaurant. My wife ordered the Sonoma pasta. it was literally swimming in oil. Flat, no flavor. Pushed it to the side of the table - waiter knew exactly what the problem was. "What's the matter, kind of bland?" He then stated that 3 out of 4 times he serves that dish, it get returned. I got scallops. Would have been nice to know they were served with rice (menu did not reveal that). I don't do rice and bread at the same meal, and I already ate the almost stale bread. I got the 6 most flavorless scallops of my life. If we had not sent back one meal, mine would have gone next. But, nice decor - even a bit "over the top". Upon entry, the hostess station was empty. After watching folks walk right by us, we ventured down to the bar area, where we called someone out of the kitchen to help us. That should have clued us to run... and not look back.

We had a very private small family event here celebrating our mothers 60th birthday. It was absolutely fabulous. Danielle, the events coordinator, met with me ahead of time to choose the pre fix meal options for our 4 course wine pairing dinner. She was very creative and flexible with the food choices and budget. She offered us the private wine cellar which was huge, but perfect for our small group of 7 adults and 2 rambunctious kiddos. We were able to be our loud, boisterous family without the stress of disturbing other guests and our children were able to run around the room freely. Jason, the wine coniseur, paired red and white wine options with each course and was gracious enough to come to our group before each pairing and explain the wines. He was very knowledgeable and wonderful to work with. Dana, our server, was also spectacular. My parents recognized her from her previous employment (which they frequented) and were thrilled to see her taking care of our group, which of course was unplanned but added to their unforgettable night. She was fun, cheerful, friendly, and very concerned with ensuring everything went perfectly. The wine cellar was beautiful and included a private bathroom. The food was delicious. Each course was wonderfully paired with wine that brought out the flavors. Overall, my mother had a great night and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you villa macri and Danielle, Dana, and Jason who all really went out of their way to make my moms 60th birthday dinner special. Food, wine, ambiance, and service was all top notch! We will be back with a much larger group!

Mixed reviews about VM. The bar is beautiful, hip and happening. Great drink menu with lots of selections. Appetizers are hit and miss. First time we ordered calamari it was crisp and delicious. Last time it was chewy and not well cooked. We enjoy stopping from time to time for cocktails but we recently had dinner here and it was just "so so". Ordered my usual Dirty Martini and it arrived half full. When I commented to the waitress she was very indifferent and commented "that's the usual pour" and walked away. Food was marginal and very slow to come out. Guess that's what we get for ordering steaks from an italian restaurant. After our meal we went to the bar and I ordered another martini that was as it should be, poured nearly to the rim. I think in the future we will stick to visiting the bar and dine elsewhere.

Nothing grinds my gears like over paying for bad food, service & drinks.......tonight I was reminded of that $42 later.......party of 1. Sat in the bar area before being noticed for at least 5 minutes, waited another 5 minutes for glass of wine to come (not crowded either at 9pm on a Wednesday either). Wine list had 1 Sauv Blanc which turned out to be just foul. Waiter then acknowledged it has "strong boquet" and that he should have warned me/given me a taste 1st, yet then charged me for the glass anyway (not cool)........so if by "strong boquet" you mean smells horrible and tastes rancid, then fine, good choice. You should probably take that 1 Sauv Blanc off your menu then that doesn't actually even taste like a Sauv Blanc if I'm not the only patron complaining. So, was charged for glass #1......glass #2 (a pinot grigio) had a live fly in it just swimming around - charged for that one too. If food/service was better I probably would have looked past the foul, fly wine, however, it was not.

I am a fan of the place in terms of food and beer selection. The menu ranks among the better Italian menus in the South Bend area. All is well prepared and presented. On the negative side, it is a little pricey for the modest amount of food on the plate. The bottled beer selection is remarkable. So remarkable in fact that I fear that the inventory doesn't turn fast enough to keep fresh beer on the shelves. Much of the beer comes from micro breweries and, although good (when fresh) is not popular enough to sell well. The grandiosity of the beer selection is representative of the grandiosity of the building and, I fear, of the owner's vision. The building is huge and its architecture somewhat flamboyant with vaulted ceilings and magnificent wood and marble (like) trim. I personally can't imaging being able to turn enough diners and drinkers to pay for all that square footage. Enjoy the vision. It may not last.

I wish there was a way to assign 3.5 stars. But given that there is not, I opted to round down. This restaurant is very new and is housed in a brand new building. The architecture/space is quite nice, with soaring ceilings and a wonderful feeling of space. There appeared to be plenty of booth seating, and they looked comfortable, but I was with a large group of nine so we sat at tables. Which is how the 3.5 rating began. They tried to seat us in the sports bar, which seemed out of place in this restaurant. Not only that, but we were a group of older, professional looking (I hope) people, so I thought it may have been more obvious that we were looking for a quieter place to dine. Be that as it may, they quickly set us up at a table. Here is a personal beef of mine, and I realize it is my own value, but if I'm in a "ristorante" I want not only to have a table cloth on my table, but I want to see table cloths on every table. Unfortunately, there were none to be seen. Anywhere. Just leaves me with a "meal at a picnic table" kind of feeling. Appetizers. We ordered a variety, and, with the exception of the chicken tacos (? what Italian ristorante would put this on their menu...and what patron of an Italian ristorante would order them...) they were all very delicious. Salads and soups. Nothing to shout "Mama mia" over (okay, okay, I'm being unduly influenced by the upcoming movie with Meryl Streep...). Okay. Entrees. Here is where this review becomes mixed. Oddly enough, for an Italian ristorante, those who ordered pasta in our group seemed less enchanted with their food than those who did not. My meal was the crab stuff shrimp, which did not actually sound appealing to me. I defaulted to that selection, however, because when I asked about two separate pasta dishes to see if they could make some modifications (add grilled chicken in one case, not put on the cream sauce in another) the wait person made a face first, then, unconvincingly, said, maybe they could. So, I went with a selection that didn't require modification. And, I was delightfully surprised. It was very good. The side of green beans and spinach were okay. The entire experience for our group was pretty fun. You don't always know how the dynamics of a group will fit into a particular restaurant. This was not a bad fit. One other comment. The wait person seemed unable to get around to the other side of the table, so there was a lot of reaching over people and people having to either take their plate or give back their plate. Yet the kitchen runner had no trouble getting around to serve. I think we would have preferred not to have to help the wait person with the serving process. Not because we were particularly lazy, but I think for those folks seated on that side of the table it was extremely disruptive. Would we go back? Well, the appetizers and half the entrees were good. The building was very nice. It is still on our list of places we would visit. One more time. I'm hoping they get some of the kinks worked out before our next visit.

Since this place has opened, the quality of the food and the wait service has gone downhill considerably. What a shame too! Way too much money for the poor dinning experience. Our last visit will be, well, our last visit. Take a lesson from Jonathan Lutz and learn how to run a good restaurant - service, quality, and value are 3 gotta haves. You can sometimes skimp on one, but never all three!

UGH! I went back to ND for a football game in search of my old stomping grounds, Macri's, and I was saddened to find out the owner moved the location from University Drive. I called 411 and learned that the owner had only moved Macri's. Well, when we arrived at Villa Macri about the only thing that was the same was the mozzarella sticks, breadsticks, and Godfather sandwich. Don't get me wrong--I would drive 100 miles to eat those mozzarella sticks but Macri's had officially gone upscale on me and I didn't like it. What happened to the deli menu, wooden booths, and 32 oz. frosty mug beers? Yes, they still have that room in the front of the restaurant but I am officially sad because they did away with so many menu items. Like I always say, don't mess with a good thing. I guess I have to go back to Bloomington to go to Macri's. sigh.

This was a very pretty restaurant. Pretty looks, which were very deceiving. We had a reservation last Saturday night. They made us wait anyway, and when they finally sat us we walked through a mostly empty restaurant to be seated in a section chock full of teeny-boopers out to eat before prom. It took 25 minutes of waiting for us to loose out tempers slightly before flagging down a waitress and asking to be seen. She sent out waiter over about 5-10 minutes after that, at which time we put in drinks, appetizers and dinner orders. 20 more minutes rolls by, without having been checked on again, and we waive down another waitress (our waiter hadn't been back since bringing drinks). She goes after our order, to find that our dinner was on the way out shortyl. No appetizers had been put in by our waiter. When confronted by my in-laws about this he asked who we 'had had that conversation with' becuase we didn't place appetizer orders with him. That was when we just asked for a manager. The manager arrived shortly after our meals, and amidst a really poor apology he offered us--nothing. Not a comped meal for the porr service, not 10-20% off, not a thing. Later the waiter braved the table and the wither looks of my sister and mother in law to ask if we would like a free dessert. We declined. We'll also decline to ever go to this restaurant again.
