One of two places worth getting sushi in Michiana. Great sushi, relaxing environment, average service. Never had to wait for table. Good place for date night or party of 6. Prices standard.

The food was good but the service was beyond terrible. My husband and I went to Soho on a sunday evening, we accepted a rush but there was only 3 tables in the dining area, 2 families at the habichi and no one at either bar or sushi bar. We got seated after 5 minutes. After we gor seated it took 15 minutes for someone to bring us water, another 15-20 minutes for someone to finally take our order and another 20-25 to get our food and refill which my husband's plate came first and 5 minutes later my food arrived. Now I would honestly understand the timing for all this even if they were the slightest bit busy but waitresses and people from the kitchen were just wondering around and having small talk with each other. The owner and his wife (I believe since they were behind the counter dressed differently) sat down and ate and had the table cleared and ready to go even before we got our food, I thought this was outrageous. The waitress, the whole 3 times she came by, didn't even seem to care she put down the dishes and left, I barely even heard her speak besides to ask our order one time. I'm a very forgiving person especially when it comes to restaurants but I do not see myself visiting this place ever again.

Soho cleverly is separated into different sections, allowing the restaurant to handle patrons wanting tepanyaki entertainment, sushi bar directness, family-style dining or a romantic dinner. The selection of specialty rolls, each priced around $12-$18, is solid. The rolls aren't too big or too battered, a complaint I have with many other sushi restaurants. My favorites are the Green Hornet and Hurricane. The former makes creative use of sliced jalepeno and egg; the latter masterfully uses spicy mayonnaise and tempura flakes. For drinks, treat yourself to some flavored saki. I recommend the lychee flavor. If youre a beer drinker, Soho has an outstanding selection, including Delirium Tremens, several Three Floyds brews, Bells brews, Mishawaka beers and many Japanese beers. A word of caution: The "Sapporo draught" isn't really from the keg. It's just the name of the beer. Also, the restaurant generally stays open until 11 p.m., but if business is slow, the kitchen will close. I was denied a second round of sushi because the chefs already had called it a night.

I have nothing but good things to say about Soho. I have been there many times and every time I have had a solid experience. From the service to the food, it is always good all the way. The weekly lunch sushi special for $9 is amazing. And the spicy salmon is my absolute favorite. I haven't tried the tepanyaki yet mainly because the sushi is so delicious. The ambiance is great too. Its very calming and sophisticated and I love the large beer and wine selection they offer. Just all in all the best place to go if you are a sushi lover and/or want to have a nice dinner. Definitely the best Japanese in South Bend.

About as fresh as you'll get with Midwestern sushi. Spider roll and Bunker Shot roll are fantastic. Some advice for sea urchin lovers: the Uni comes in fresh every Wednesday. As an added bonus, Soho has one of the best bottled beer selections in the area. American craft brews, exotic imports, fine Belgian, Lambics, and even Asian selections. Did not try the steak, or anything non-sushi except for the calamari, which was crusted in panko and totally fire.

I went here on recommendation of a local, and boy was I surprised. The decor is 5 star for sure, a very well appointed top notch environment. Full wine list, and Sake list (I don't drink but I appreciate the list). I started with Wakame (seaweed salad) and it was nice, followed with a dragon roll (nicely rolled, and good quality fish), and something they called a Green Hornet. The Green Hornet was Egg, Eel, and Avocado with white tuna and a jalapen on top, they then seer the roll with a torch to give it a smokey flavor. Both rolls were well executed and of fine quality. I finished with Negimaki ( basically beef rolls, imagine beef instead of seaweed on the outside of a roll). All dishes were great, the atmosphere is more than clean its immaculate. What an amazing sushi place this was.

Despite the good food, I can't imagine ever going back. I feel like someone small has been hitting me in the head with a tiny hammer for 75 minutes straight. The music in this place is awful. Unrelenting beats weave a tapestry of pain that follows you home. Unless you are on ecstasy, skip this rave.

We ventured out this past week to try to find a good Japanese restaurant in the area. We were rather impressed by the wall of craft beers right as you walk in and the atmosphere of the formal dining room, which is where we sat for dinner. And our aw did not stop there, the sushi was superb, probably the best I have ever had outside of a large city and very very fresh tasting. Sadly those were the highlights and the only reason they receive two stars was the sushi. If I would have just had sushi they would have easily been 4 stars. The beer selection was nice, not too priciest I have seen some of these beers go for, but also not the cheapest. As far as the actual dinner goes it killed it for my wife and I, bland came out of our mouths multiple times and under-cooked a few times. I got the grilled snapper, with a mushroom in beef broth soup and a house ginger salad, I would give that an overall 2 stars, the fish was cooked perfectly, but the veggies were under-cooked, the red sauce lacked any flavor, the salad was a salad I could make at home, and the soup really tasted like hot water with a dash of salt more than anything. My wife went for a chicken dish, she said it lacked any of the flavors she would have expected after reading the description, she said she had better miso soup at Chinese takeout places, and she also figured she could have made a salad better than the one she had, overall she said she would give her meal 1 star. Really I think because of the sushi and the beer selection this place deserves 4 stars, but I just can't give them 4 stars because of that dinner and at the prices they were asking for our entree's I expected much much better.

pretty good rolls. good beer list. a little expensive. i've gone twice and am not disappointed, but it's not the best sushi i've had.
(3)David I.
Great Japanese fare. Sashimi, miso soup & yaki soba were all authentic and prepared nicely. We also enjoyed the mellow atmosphere, as well.

Been to Soho three time to eat teppan. Always were sat in the back room which was empty. At least the main dinning area and sushi bar had some atmosphere and life in it. I service each time was poor. On two visits ordered a few pieces of sushi at the table for an appetizer and it arrived after our cook at the table teppan food had been served. The waitress offered an excuse that she had a bad day and her car was just broken into. All the other times I ordered tea and had to go walking around to find sweetener because I couldn't find the server. When I did get my sushi I found it to be just OK... nothing worth eating again. The meats cooked on the teppan the first visit were good. Portions were smaller than you would get an Hana Yori, our areas other Japanese teppan steakhouse. The next time some one in our group ordered teppan Salmon. They cooked on the same grill as all the other dinners and I found my steak to taste very fishy like the salmon. It was really bad. The salmon may be great but I don't want my steak to taste like it! So in all, I like the decor of the front room. Sushi taste was not terrible but far from others decent places. Steak and other meat was good just not when cooked at the same table with someone ordering salmon. Service, definitely lacking! For Teppan I still chose Hana Yori for taste and service and for Sushi my pick is Toyo.

Soho is a great asset to Michiana. We've needed a good Japanese restaurant that serves fresh sushi for a long time. Although I've only frequented their dining room, and not their Teppanyaki Grill, I'm sure that's great as well. I was impressed with the Chicken Teriyaki but it wasn't bad at all. Their ginger salad and Miso soup is what you'd expect. It's the sushi that keeps us coming back. It's fresh and it's always presented beautifully. In my regional travels to larger cities like Chicago or Milwaukee, I haven't found better sushi. Try the Angry Dragon, Happy Dragon, and Shrimp Tempura rolls.
(4)Camden D.
Very boring sushi with outragous prices for the quality of food! Will not be back, I could make better sushi at home.
(2)Jeff L.
This place is a wonderful treat that I was able to stumble upon on a Friday night. They are open until 11PM which is a major plus. They offer teppanyaki (when they cook and entertain you while cooking), sushi bar, and normal table service. They do have an extensive wine and beer list, but they do not offer any alcohol aside from that. The food is reasonably priced, and you get a large plateful of food when sitting at their teppanyaki dining. It was not the best quality which is why they only get four instead of five. I will return on try other items that they have to offer.
(4)Tyler C.
As a chef and a connoisseur of fine dinning, their sushi did not meet my expectations. Have eaten there on multiple occasions since they opened and have been very disappointed every time. A limited variety of sushi consisting of 6 very common ingredients, which is basically mix and match to come up with rolls that all sound the same. Add a different ingredient, call it a new roll. Was not impressed at all! The size of the rolls where pretty small for the price. Speaking of prices, their web page says one price and you get there it's more money. One time I asked to speak with the manager and was told that there is no manager working right now. Well I happened to know someone who works there; asked them if there was a manager and she said yes and got him. Wasn't helpful at all. I never complain unless I really feel there is a need to say something. As a chef I take many things into consideration, but I've eating there enough times over since they've been open to say I will not ever go back. I belive Soho is for the uneducated, wealthy consumer who doesn't understand true japanese cousine or sushi. Everyone has different taste buds and expectations when they go out to eat, Soho just did not meet mine. The best sushi around the South Bend area is Matuba in my personal opinion. It's the complete opposite of Soho. Hope this was helpful.
(2)David J.
I ate here twice on a recent visit to SB. Had sushi lunch, which was the standard tuna/salmon/whitefish combo--but it was fresh and well presented. The second time six of us ate at the grill table. My niece loved it. The food was good, a little on the oily side. The restaurant is well designed, but the interior spaces are very dark, and the kitchen entryway is visible from the dining room, which is a pet peeve of mine. But I would go back.

I went to Soho for my birthday dinner...what a mistake! It was truly a terrible experience. The service was the worst I've ever had, and that's really saying something. The waiter was rude and inattentive. He asked me if I wanted sugar for my tea, which I did; however, he didn't bring it. By the time he decided to come back to the table so I could ask for it again, my tea was cold. He brought the soup and salad before we had finished our appetizer and the entrees before the soup and salad were done, and in all that time he didn't ever clear a single dish on our small 2-top table. When there was no place to put my large main course plate, he handed it to me. Seeing me struggle, he very helpfully told me to move another plate out of the way. It was insane! But honestly, even if the service had been great I wouldn't be back. The food was bland and boring. I didn't try the sushi so I can't speak for that but nothing that I ate (between appetizers, soup, salad, my entrée, and my date's entrée) could be described as anything but so-so. I also found the loud noises coming from the tepanyaki room very irritating. My only positive comment is that it was very pretty on the inside. If I could I'd give this zero stars.
(1)Amanda M.
I've been to this place when it first opened, but moved out of the area so have not been in years. The first experience was a good one so I recommended it to my parents since I'm back in town. Boy was I in for a surprise... The one star accounts for the culturally appeasing atmosphere: aesthetically pleasing decor and music. The four other stars are missing because of the service, food, and comfort. -When refilling a glass, why is it necessary to take each individual's cup back to refill? Especially when you're seated with 8 strangers, it is odd to grab the glasses and give us back the same ones when there is a risk of spreading germs either by mixing up the cups or putting the tops of glasses together where we drink from. And, no, it is not a clean glass- the straw stays in the cup. Hello- flu season people! It's just not sanitary. -Our waitress and hibachi chef got in a yelling battle right in front of us! But it's ok, though, because it was in a language none of us could understand... There was a discrepancy with someone's order, so they chose to talk about it in front of us because that's not rude. -I was looking forward to my favorite part of any teppanyaki restaurant: the chef. They are so talented with their cooking style and nothing beats the flame out of a fiery onion volcano. However, apparently the chefs at Soho are accustomed to throwing food at their guests. This was an unpleasant surprise as I was planning on being an innocent bystander of the cooking. I understand interaction with us is probably encouraged, but don't force it! Pressuring people to catch food flying in their mouths is demeaning. No means NO. Not to mention the evidence of the many failed attempts on the floor. Talk about a waste of our money. It wasn't just this chef doing it, either. -He also sprayed water at us from his station. I could understand if it was a light mist sprayed one time, but no. This was a full-on jetted stream flying at my face. More than once. No one wants that with their dinner. I'm not there for a cold shower- and what's the point of that? Rude. -The food was an adequate amount and average-tasting, but my mom got food poisoning. Don't order the salmon! -Temperature was uncomfortably cold. People had to put on their jackets and the waitress even complained about it! Uh... hello! Based on reading the reviews now, I wish we had just gotten suhi. Needless to say, I won't risk coming back to try it.

I like the decor! The food was pretty good, especially considering its sushi in Indiana. The portions and prices were fair. I will go back!
(4)Ryan M.
Called for reservation the day before. When arrived was told we would be seated momentarily, waited for over an hour to be seated. Waitress messed up our order twice. And still never got the beer I ordered.
(1)Lauren K.
It's nice to see a restaurant in this area that doesn't look so generic, and I believe Soho isn't a chain. Michiana needs more restaurants like these. We ate at the hibachi table. It was a fun dinner/show. My only complaint is that I'm vegetarian and the veggie dish wasn't really substantial. I basically got for my dinner what everyone else got as their side. But what I did eat tasted great. Yummy saki sangria too! Overall a good experience.
(4)Rotel G.
We arrived 5 minutes before the place was closing, they didn't mind at all. They stayed for over 30 minutes over for us They were kind, fast and the food was fresh and delicious!
(5)Christine S.
Crowded Tepenyaki room, there was a party at one table and they pretty much ruined our entire evening because they were so loud. They were like yelling and screaming so loud that you could not hear the people you are with. Can't blame them for having fun, management needs to have a party room though. The food Pretty average Japanese steakhouse food. Service Not the greatest I gave it 3 stars for decor and beer selection. We noted how empty they were for a Friday night. There are a lot of Japanese steakhouses popping up in the area. Soho needs to step up their game and be competitive.
(3)Amber P.
Soho really disappointed us last night. We went with a group of 5 girls from work and right off the bat we experienced poor customer service. The front hostess stand girls did not even smile at us and told us we had to wait to be seated until more people came. We asked if we could get a drink and they pointed at the bar and said nothing. Sitting down, 30 minutes after our reservation, we had our orders taken and we asked if we could get something other than beer or wine. The waitress said, "no, we just have beer, wine and sake." My coworker then asked about the Saketini drinks she said she saw on line and the waitress said, oh yeah, we have those.... Moving on to dinner, the rice was SO bland. We had to dump soy sauce on it to get some salt content and flavor. My steak was medium well and I ordered rare and we didn't get our vegetables until we were done eating. We had also asked for egg yolk sauce and the chef rolled his eyes we we asked about it. It was a very strange teppanyaki experience. My husband really enjoyed the chicken fried rice that I took home to him, though. Also, the ambiance and lighting was very nice. I, sadly, will not be back.

I love this restaurant for many reasons! Just a few things ( as others have reviewed) holding me back from a few more stars. Let me start by saying if this review was based on food and beer selection alone, it would be 5 stars!! We always go to the grill side and the plates are always delicious. To start you get a tasty miso soup and salad with a ginger dressing. Then the chef cooks your meal in front of you (more on this in a minute). We usually order a combo plate of chicken, beef, and shrimp. It comes with veggies and rice too. The portions are generous in my opinion... Enough to eat for left overs later :) The cons mostly have to do with the wait staff and certain parts of the "chef show". The waitstaff (during our multiple visits) is inattentive and not very personable. They don't seem to be very concerned in keeping up with drink orders and haven't been very knowledgeable about the drink menu. The "chef show" can at times be a little unnerving as well. I get that they want to be entertaining but if I don't want to catch vegetables in my mouth or get water sprayed on me I feel like I should be allowed to opt out :) I usually don't because I think it's fun but it makes my husband all antsy. We will go back because we love the food and craft beer selection and just keep hoping the service part improves.

We go here every year on our anniversary. We used to love it. Beautiful place, great decor, waterfall and fish pond. Separate sushi bar and grill and restaurant areas. Great food at a decent price and the sushi always looks amazing, is fresh and delicious. The service in years past was also very good. Attentive waiters, friendly sushi chefs and great hostesses. Even sometimes a free dessert and our waiters always talked to and interacted with us. This year the service has taken a nose dive. We waited over 5 minutes before the hostess even acknowledged us. Then they sat us in the restaurant area and lit our candle which was nice. Our waitress came and took our sushi order. We asked her for edamame with a side of wasabi to come first with a hot sake to come with our meal. She brought the warm but not hot sake to the table with the edamame and no wasabi. We had to ask for more soy sauce a couple times also after having to track her down because she was no where to be seen. She spilled water on the table and left it, never came to check on us while we ate and wasn't very friendly at all. While we sat there we saw other diners have long waits at the hostess station and often with no hostess to be seen. Then a Pizza Hut guy came and delivered 2 hot pizzas to the hostess desk. We left after one course and didn't even order dessert. It was VERY disappointing for our one special meal. We spent a whole lot less than we normally do at Soho because the service was just horrible. The food is very good but the service is awful.
(3)Kristin M.
Absolutely disgusting food on tables, dishes and chairs. Rude waitresses and staff. Left before eating. Understaffed. Should have been a negative 10.
(1)Rachel S.
I am sad to give out this one star review because I have no complaints about the food. The problem is the service. I was in recently with a group of friends. We came in to a mostly empty restaurant and told the hostess the number of people in our party. Part of our party had yet to arrive, and she told us she was going to wait for us all to get there before going to set up the table. She stood around and dawdled at the hostess stand instead, until we finally asked her if she could please get our table set up. Our server was awful. She was abrupt in manner and made us hand each other our plates and glasses instead of walking around the table. I can understand that it can be hard to reach, but for the most part that wasn't the case here. And not even an "excuse my reach" or anything. She made us feel like our presence was a burden. I left a 10% tip, which is the first time I've under tipped in my life because I felt we were treated so poorly. If it's such an inconvenience for us to be there, then I don't need to bother coming again.

I used to frequent Soho when I was a graduate student at ND. It hit the spot when I was craving sushi/Japanese food (which was often!) but was stuck far away from any ocean in the midwest :(. This place has decent sushi options. There was usually a wait to be seated. The interior is very dark but modern enough - it definitely doesn't have the generic/chain-restaurant vibe that many restaurants in the MIchiana area do, which is nice. Overall, if you're craving sushi and in the South Bend area, this place is A-ok to curb your cravings, but nothing amazing or outstanding.
(3)Lisa B.
This gets 3 and that is pushing it. Not from the sushi. The sushi I had itself was worth 5. What brought this review down was the service. When I walked in there were 3 people at the hostess area. No one verbally acknowledged me. One girl just looked at me. So I asked for a seat for one for sushi. She then asked me if I wanted to sit at the bar like she was bored to tears. Then told me to go sit down and she would bring me a menu in a minute. ...What?? Then the waiter came and he was nice enough. I ordered a couple rolls and the sushi chef did a great job and was really fast at getting it to me. But I had no soy sauce. So I asked the sushi chef. He clearly told the waiter to get it for me and I had to wait a few minutes to start eating because he took a good long time to bring the soy sauce to me. I really wanted to enjoy my sushi experience but the service here was upsetting. The rolls I ordered were smaller than I expected for the price and I would have ordered more but I just wanted to finish my sushi and gluten free beer and leave. They even have gluten free beer available!! They would be such a great place if it weren't for the service. That is why I gave 3 stars because the menu was worth 5! Possible that Wednesday evening is not the best night to show up, but the service should be decent any time.

I was visiting a friend at Notre Dame and wanted to go eat some sushi. I am giving a one star because I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. I work at a sushi restaurant back at my college campus and I was surprised on how unprofessional this place was. First, we had a party of 8 and was told around a 30 minute wait, but we ended up waiting around an hour and a half. They did not even give us a table, we had to point out the table and had to tell them that it was an open table. Second, when I asked about some of the items on the menu, the two hostess gave me a bigger menu and told me that the answers to my questions was in there, but it ended up being the same thing as the paper menu, resulting in that the hostess did not have any knowledge about anything on the menu. Third, when I ordered one of the nigiri in japanese, the waitress didn't know what I was talking about. Then when I told her in english, she still didn't know what fish I was talking about when it was stated right there in the nigiri section. She also did not seem very professional about her knowledge of the dishes or the fish. The food was not very appealing to look at. The rolls had very big chunks of the fish which was nice, but the rice on the rolls was very slim, and it looked like they were really trying to save as much rice as they can while making it because some of the pieces of the rolls were missing some sides of rice which was ridiculous. Also, one of my friend ordered the teriyaki chicken and it came with 2 and a half piece of broccoli, and it did not look like a 22 dollar dish. Overall, I feel like the atmosphere of the restaurant makes it seem like it is an upscale Japanese restaurant, but considering the food and the service, it's pretty bad. I guess I was full after two rolls, but I felt like I was getting ripped off.
(1)Adam H.
Despite bad service reviews noted on other posts, mine was pretty good. Quick turnaround on drinks and food although the restaurant was not very busy on a monday. I ordered sashimi combo. Fish was tasty and reasonably priced i thought although not cheap. Excellent beer list. Live closeby, will be back to try hibachi and more beer.
(4)Rory K.
I just finished a meal and figured that would be the best time to write my review. Tonight, we stopped by for what we were hoping would be a quick bite. Admittedly, the restaurant was fairly busy, but not packed. I won't harp on this but, it took a solid 45 minutes for our party to get food (an entree of teriyaki chicken and three sushi rolls). The food was alright, but nothing special. We have been here several times and I think that teppanyaki style dining is the way to go at Soho. Service isn't great, but that may be due to the serious shortage of servers. Either way, I will probably be back. I will not, however, expect much out of this place.
(2)Dawn D.
This was my second time eating here. The first time was pretty good, this time not so much. The waitress was MIA all night. My friend found a piece of plastic in his salad...yes, plastic. We discreetly alerted the staff. Their response was to ask if he wanted another salad, no thanks. Then they casually said sorry like it was no big deal. Ate off chipped plates, food was so-so. Overall, no thanks and please hold the plastic.
(2)Laszlo N.
My dining experience at this sushi "bistro" was overall pleasant, the decor was kinda cheesy but corporate and commercial, as was the music. The waitress was friendly and attentive without hovering, Brittaney was her name I think. The beer list at this place is amazing, if science fictionally high priced. The miso soup was great as it usually is at all sushi places, but the food when when got it was a letdown. I got a sushi/sashimi platter for two, $35 I think, and it was pitiful. I also ordered ikura with a quail egg on it and got a sloppy, poorly executed piece, only one mind you for $5. The food was not well presented on the plate, the portions were for midgets, and the prices were way off for only what they offer in return. Nice place to go if you want to drink beer on a Sunday, or to have a meeting with your accountant, but not a place to go for a filling sushi dinner.Almost as bad as Wooshis downtown South Bend.
(1)Kari W.
My experience here was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. Our waitress messed up EVERYTHING that we ordered, and it was a very simple order. We had 2 shrimp tempura rolls, and a tiger roll. From the beginning, our waitress seemed very fidgety and out of it. She said she had been there since 10am. When she came to take our order, she interrupted us and said, "wait, I forgot my pad to write this down. Oh never mind, maybe I can just remember it". She forgot the second tempura roll. I mean, I know how complicated remembering three items (2 of those being the same thing) is. It took forever to get the missing one out. The actual sushi was a little fishy tasting, and it didn't seem very fresh. My friend and I actually felt a little ill after leaving. I love sushi, and eat it often. This was the worst I've had. The sushi they have at my local grocery store is better than what I had here. She seemed to disappear and was not attentive at all. She brought us our bill without asking if we wanted anything else. We told her that actually, we were planning on ordering dessert. My friend ordered cheesecake, and the bottom of it was all slimy! It was disgusting. When she came back with the bill, we asked for it to be split down the middle, with the exception of an avocado roll I ordered. I asked to have that one put on my bill since we didn't share it. You'd think I was asking her to perform brain surgery or something, because she just didn't understand. So she finally brings us our bills. We pay and leave. Crappy experience, not such great food. Not a huge deal, we just won't return. You'd think that would be the end? So I check my bank statement today, and she helped herself to an unauthorized tip on the avocado roll that was on it's own receipt. I left her tip on the main receipt, and accounted for both. I wrote a zero in the line for tips. Tomorrow I have to take more time and energy to call them and have it fixed. What a joke. She is either dishonest, or just that stupid. I will not be back!

Good food does not trump good service. And they don't care for their customers! The servers were unpleasant, and when the manager came by, he did not feel any different. The evening was ruined ... Now this was a while back, and hopefully they have improved. Otherwise, the restaurant would have been high on my list of places to go to.
(1)Seth B.
Love the sushi here. Tepanyaki is great as well! Service is all around outstanding. I have been coming to Soho for the past four years and could not believe it didn't have a five-star review. This place has a cool, modern vibe. Apparently, the music is not to the enjoyment of one easily distracted patron (see below review), but it should in no way detract from the amazing food or service. Easily one of the best sushi/hibachi restaurants in Michiana.
(5)TimKim K.
Excellent food. Very good sushi. Few places around here to get the Japanese food favorites besides this one. When you have a craving it hits the spot. Try the spicy rolls. Interesting variety. Fish always solid fresh quality. Don't expect the staff to understand or care if you order omakase. Just pick something out you may like, as anything will be satisfactory. Interesting assortment of beers and sakes, too.
(4)Mike S.
Great place to eat. Real Tepan food and better than Hani Yori. Very clean and food is flavorful.
(5)Jason H.
Average to below average sushi, not particularly fresh nor creatively presented. I have eaten here twice, and there is very little value the experience. I will never be back. This place is not for people who have eaten and appreciate really good sushi/Japanese food.

I was really disappointed last time I dined at Soho. It will also be my last time. The food was okay for the most part but what really ruined my dinner experience for me was the incredibly rude and inattentive staff. I was overcharged for my food and drink I had ordered, I explained to the waitress that the menu said differently. She said that the restaurant had NOT updated all their menus yet and she'll ask her manager about it. She came back with my card charged the UNHONORED price and walked away without even letting me know. When I asked for the manager, he was just as unhelpful and said it was too late to do anything now and he didn't want to pay out of pocket to get my money back. Just rude. I was also with a party of about 20 people, who are just as disgusted. That's 20 guests that won't come back and will spread the word about the lack of hospitality at this restaurant. Note: The customer comes first!

This is a great place for a birthday celebration. The chefs are entertaining and the food is healthy. They allowed us to bring in our own birthday cake and our waitress served it with a smile. I love the fact that they let us split an entree for an extra charge. Everyone in our party had a fabulous time. Still awesome!

Why did they not have this stuff when I was growing up in the area?! We came here or a family dinner one night and had a great time! We ordered a variety of the rolls and sashimi and all were super fresh and really delicious! Someone ordered something that came with miso soup and a ginger salad and the waiter ended up bringing all 6 of us one. I thought that was a great touch! He was pretty funny and super attentive to us our entire stay. If you're looking for great sushi in the area definitely check out Soho!

When comparing this place to any place in Los Angeles, this would be a 3 star. Being that this was in Southbend and nowhere near an ocean I've upgraded my rating to a 4. We went there near closing and were pleasantly surprised. The edamame was standard. Both my colleague and I ordered a salad and sushi. I had the seaweed salad. This was really good. I ordered a roll which had a few different fishes. This was ok. This roll was 3 stars for me. I also ordered a yellowtail roll with green onions (negi-Hama). The hamachi was impressively good and fresh which is why I was impressed. Maybe igot the fish just fresh for the day. Here are my sushi credentials in order to rate my review: 1. I've eaten sushi all around the world. 2. I've eaten sushi all over japan from Hokkaido with luscious crab all the way to Okinawa. 3. My father is a sushi grade fish salesman, so there is always fresh sashimi at our house.

My very favorite restaurant. We drive over an hour to get there and I would say we go at least once a month. Their sushi is phenomenal!
(5)Andrew H.
I have eaten habachi/tepannyaki all over the U.S. Including LA and San Fran. It was excellent!! Everything had great flavor! The sushi was off the chain. Definitely worth the money.

Alright, so generally sushi in the area sucks. It's bofo Indiana. It's 2 days away from the ocean. I get it. It's not gonna be phenomenal, especially since I've experienced sushi from the Bay Area, Miami, and SoCal. Soho is solid, though. I've tried a variety of their rolls and some sashimi to test out the freshness of their fish (which is actually probably a horrible way to figure it out considering I might have died from parasites living in non-fresh fish; I swear this is a real thing, I saw it on Animal Planet once). Anyway, yeah, Soho's raw fish is relatively fresh and tasty, so don't worry about all that (sorry). I like ordering rainbow rolls and tekka salmon/tekka tuna. These all have significant amounts of raw fish in them. Nice, light flavor-- as rolls featuring raw fish should taste. Poor execution though. I like my rolls not to fall apart the second I pick them up with my chopsticks. I don't know, maybe if you like a semi-deconstructed roll, you'll like Soho rolls. Also, the rice was still super warm, which was unfortunate because warm raw fish is pretty weird. For those who are not as adventurous or just starting to get into sushi eating, definitely try the dragon roll. Those are my favorite, and Soho actually does a pretty good job with theirs, though the eel sauce needs to be eased up a bit. I'm also a fan of their caterpillar rolls. I think I just might really really like avocado, though (both have lots of avocado, mmm). The rolls in general are average priced and on the small side. They've got a lot of creative "Americanized" options, which I suppose is fitting for the area, but their more traditional/purist options are also there. Overall, it's pretty average food. At least the intimate atmosphere is nice though!

Best Japanese food in michiana. I go all the time and would highly recommend it! I love the atmosphere and the starry ceiling. You will not be disappointed.

We are visiting from out of town, this means we had to taxi to get here, and arrive at 8:40. We walked in and were told that they were closed for the night. That they could do take out only. I promptly told them that we had just taken a taxi to arrive and had no ride back to our hotel. The response was "oh I'm sorry". Now I worked in a restaurant for years. We NEVER closed early. More then likely we sat people that arrived 15 minutes late. So this was my first problem. My second was that there were 2 other parties ordering take out, so there was business to be had. My third issue was nothing was done to help solve the problem. There are easy fixes like, can we call you a cab home or to another place? Can we call you a cab and here is 10% off for your next visit, please come back tomorrow. Or there is a place right down the road, let me call to see if they are open. None of this was done just a "oh sorry". I was very disappointed with the response.

From living in Chicago for many years, and being half Japanese, I am pretty picky about my sushi. I have not experienced the teppanyaki side so I cannot comment on that. The lunch special is the best deal around. Miso soup, salad and 2 sushi rolls for $10. There are many options and the quality is great! I recommend the Bogey roll. Service is wonderful and the restaurant has a nice ambience. The first few places I had sushi in Michiana I was terribly disappointed. I was more than thrilled when I finally had some delicious sushi at Soho!!

We were hungry for sushi and remembered seeing a nice looking sushi / teppan grill place right by our grocery store (Martin's), so we strolled into Soho and my first impression was WOW. It's flagstone brick walls, dark wood work, twinkling ceiling, craft beer display, elegant teppan rooms and sword flanked sushi bar make this space both sexy and upscale. We opted for a table under the twinkling faux night sky and awaited our server. Unfortunately we waited a long time (at least 5 minutes) for her to even acknowledge us and it goes downhill from there. We'd ordered a cold sake, an unfiltered one and she looked at us like we we're speaking another language. I further clarified by saying the name and the price ($13) and again the look of utter confusion on her face was apparent. Roughly 10 minutes later we received our sake. So far... not impressed. She dropped off our sake and walked away... about 5 minutes later she returned and we'd both decided to order the sashimi lunch. She then asked us what kind of sushi we'd like, we had to pick... which was in complete contrast from the menu. The sushi lunch you could pick, but we'd ordered the sashimi, which was "chef's choice"... she rolled her eyes at her own mistake and walked away. The whole experience so far... was strange. Nearly 40 minutes later... we finally received our sashimi (10 pieces each of ahi tuna, yellowtail, salmon & albacore. The sushi... was excellent and truly the ONLY reason I gave the restaurant 4 stars. Our service hovered around a 1-2, which is sad. I cannot stress enough how high quality their fish is... served cold, displayed nicely and with reasonable prices. Our sashimi lunches we're $11 each and included a miso soup or salad as well. We will go back to Soho... and hopefully have better service the next time around. I'd like to try their teppan grill and without question will enjoy their sushi once again.

This place is the only one I have found in the surrounding area that actually makes decent sushi. They have some creative rolls, the service is always quick, and the food is tasty. The decor is a bit dark so it could be a bit awkward if you aren't on a date...but otherwise very pleasant. I've eaten here many times and always had a good experience.

I personally love Soho Bistro and I live in Chicago. Whenever I'm craving sushi, this would be the spot I would choose any day over Hana Yuri and Matuba. It may not beat Chicago's sushi but this is Michiana...what more can you expect from a suburban area like this? Service has always been great. The owner, Sophie/Sophia, is very nice. The servers there are always smiling and I've never had to wait for long for anything. The platter with chicken teriyaki and grilled shrimp is my fiancé's favorite but I'm more of a sushi person. I'm always making sure that I do order takeout after our dinner so that my sister and her kids can enjoy it as well. I'll be sure to visit again very soon.

When I was looking for a nice Japanese restaurant in South Bend area where diversity of cuisine is limited, I was happy to find Soho Bistro. (the other is Zing fusion in Mishawaka) Situated in Heritage Square Mall, location is very accessible with plenty of parking. I'll break it down by 3 key points (Food, Decor, Ambiance): 1. Food - We ordered ginger salad, kid's terriyaki chicken, Angry dragon roll, spicy salmon roll, and Filet Mignon steak. Dessert: Mango mochi -Ginger salad - (3/5) Was expecting the orangish, light ginger dressing filled with carrot shavings (that's what gives its color if it's 100% natural) but got a creamy 1000 Island looking dressing. It was def. heavier than original while tasted decent. Greens were nice and fresh, and at $3, it was nice portion. -Kids' chicken terriyaki - (1/5) this was disappointing. too salty and sauce didn't really add anything to the chicken, and chicken was just meh. fried rice that came with it was very disappointing - tasted like they just tried to put soy sauce and call it a day. -Angry dragon roll- (3.5/5) This was the best among what we ordered. Good portion of eel and salmon. Freshness OK. A bit too much sauce masked the flavor. (Very American... which I dislike for Japanese foods which is supposed to be overall mild in spice and seasoning) -Spicy Salmon roll-(1/5) I always order spicy salmon roll or spicy salmon temaki when I go to sushi house because it's one of my favorite rolls and because it readily tells me how good or bad the restaurant is. This was total disappointment: they mixed in a lot of tempura flakes with minced salmon that u could hardly taste the fish. It was like tempura flake with spicy sauce. Most disappointing dish. -Filet Mignon steak - (3/5) Generous two 6~8oz portion, cooked perfect medium, steak was juicy. Again, they overdid the seasoning so it was salty, and asparagus, onion, and peppers were strewn on the bottom which wasn't too appealing. They were tasty though. Overall, it was OK and nothing to write home about. -They served 2 green tea with a pot when I asked for one, but server initially said "all tea pots are broken" and she happened to have found the only one intact. This puzzled me... if you're a Japanese restaurant touted in being "serious" contender, how can you NOT have ocha tea pots available? This tells me that management is perhaps too American and not aware of Japanese details and culture. 2. Decor - Overall nice and cozy. Table decors were a bit off, and massive wooden beams encasing the dining area where we sat, while it worked, space would've been utilized better with more open plan (minimalist). Teppanyaki rooms were on one side and they looked like lecture halls... bright light, big room full with diners staring at each other across the cooking show... I thought it was hilarious... I have high standards coming from NYC area where Asian restaurant competition is high... and almost always teppanyaki rooms should be dimmed in order to focus the attention on the cooking. 3. Ambiance - they were playing chill lounge music, as a fusion asian restaurant in the village would. Cozy and romantic. I saw many couples. Place was packed after 630ish with large groups waiting for teppanyaki. I'd say mostly American diners. Please understand that I'm not knocking american diners here.. just saying they do not know well about authentic japanese food, and thus would love the food here. I'm Korean-American living in the US for 20 years so that makes me more American as well, but being Asian, I'd pass Soho for something more subtle, more authentic next time. Food-wise, Zing fusion in Mishawaka overall trumped Soho. Overall the experience was pleasant, with food being too American (over-sauced, over-seasoned). But perhaps this would work greatly since we're in Indiana where comparisons are rare. So take your pick!

This is the best sushi place in town. We have taken my son to the hibachi and he loved it. The place is hip, modern, and a great date place. Is it as good as big city sushi places? No, but it's pretty darn close. We always enjoy dinner here. The sushi selection is pretty solid. You can find the usual. But they need something to set it apart from other places.

Soho Bistro was highly recommended to me as quality sushi finally coming to the South Bend area. Having avoided trying out any of the other sushi restaurants in SB, I can't knowledgeably comment on the lack of quality sushi in the area - but unfortunately I wound up being very disappointed at Soho Bistro. I've visited twice; the first time, our group ordered the sushi boat, which comes omakase-style and includes most of the "typical" sushi offerings. We also individually ordered entrees (I got the chicken teriyaki, which was good). On the second visit I tried their uni, amaebi, and salmon nigiri, and our table shared a few rolls including a futomaki, caterpillar, and spider roll. While the sushi isn't terrible per se, it also isn't that fresh or high quality. For example, the salmon on the omakase boat was almost tasteless, and I purposefully ordered it again on my second visit, hoping that the first time was just a fluke, but it didn't taste much better. The uni and amaebi were particularly disappointing; the uni was mushy and watery and the amaebi was super rubbery. Also, they didn't ask if we wanted the amaebi heads; I had to ask about them after they didn't come out with the sushi and then the waitress had to ask the chef about it. I know people don't always eat them, but at least we should be asked if we want them. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive; on both visits, the food came quickly and the servers were quick to keep all our drinks filled. The only criticism (other than the amaebi issue) is that on our first visit, some appetizers that others in my party ordered never arrived. But otherwise, service was pretty good. A few others in my party also weren't that impressed with the sushi, and so it leaves me wondering what all the fuss is about. I suppose for those unwilling to make the run to Chicago just for sushi, Soho Bistro could serve as a fix. Unfortunately, Soho Bistro is also very pricy, with individual nigiri in the same ballpark as quality Chicago sushi spots. I mean obviously, places like Katsu are way more expensive, but even say Kaze is barely more per equivalent nigiri. I don't factor price much if at all into my ratings, but it's one reason I personally will be avoiding Soho Bistro.

We have been waited for twenty minutes, and they finally deliver us some dumplings. We were celebrating birthday for a friend, but they set a couple between us. What an awkward arrangement!!!!!

Probably the best sushi in the South Bend area. I live in Chicago, and most places here blow this place away in terms of quality, but when I'm back in town this is the only decent place to go. Some of the specialty rolls are pretty good. Reasonable-ish prices and good environment, decor, & service.

I walked in for a lunch with someone I never met. She was running late which was great because then I could use the restroom and then wait for her. I let the hostess know I'm just waiting for someone. But she was one of those 17 year old types that just confused b/c you were talking to her.... like, "I see your lips moving... do you want me to do something for you?" No, I just want you to keep sitting on your stool and I'll you know when I want to be seated. Next time I won't talk to you unless I do need something. But it would have been cool if you offered me a menu as I have never been here before but nevermind. While waiting you can tell you're in a pseudo small town with Notre Dame'rs. EVERYone knew someone guy when they walked past his table. My guess is he was a coach or something. Ah the collegiate life. When my new friend arrived, we were sat right away. Bonus. Plus the server was really attentive, patient and efficient. I went with one of the lunch specials which was two sushi rolls and soup or salad (ha, not the Olive Garden type). The salad was just the right size. And the sushi was good - I got the spicy tuna and some crunchy tuna roll with avocado. The crunchy one was especially good since I have never had it before. I want to say it was $8.99 which I guess is about standard when you think about getting sushi to go even at Whole Foods. But it's delightful to have a Japanese restaurant in this area. No need to rush to return though.
(4)Christine D.
This my favorite sushi place in the area. Service is professional, helpful, and friendly. I've never had to wait long for a table. Large selection of Japanese beers/wines. AMAZING sushi. The ginger dressing on the salads is finger-licking. I haven't been seated on the hibachi side (not my style) but you have the option to eat at a table, at the grill, or at the sushi bar. It is a little pricey but well worth the cash for a pleasant dining experience.

My wife and I had lunch at Soho with another couple on December 30. I am learning about Sushi but our friends who were with us are more experienced. We thought the food was very good. I ordered the Sushi Lunch Deluxe, my wife ordered shrimp with vegetables and our friends various sushi rolls and salmon sashimi. Our friends thought the sushi rolls and sashimi were very fresh and well-made. I thought my Sushi Lunch was very good also. My wife like the shrimp dish but most of the vegetables were cooked onions - she mentioned that she would have liked more variety in the vegetables. One of the surprises for all of us was the demeanor of the waitress. Non of us said anything to each other until about half-way through the meal, when one of us finally broke the ice with a comment, "Have you noticed anything about the waitress?" We all had to share our once hidden thoughts. Maybe it was a bad day but for her but you got the feeling that providing service was not her cup of tea. She was abrupt, focused on herself, and dismissing - not the quality service we would of have expected at Soho.

Friendly, great authentic food, awesome service, amazing atmosphere and manager, Shauna, is phenomenal. Located in Heritage Square .... elegant and modern decor. Ask for waitress Beth!!!!!

OK, I'll let others speak to the food, but the craft beer selections is seriously awesome. All I drink is craft beer. The selection was awesome. I couldn't believe it when I walked in. I don't know of a restaurant in the South Bend area with more craft beer. And....the sushi is great. My whole family loves this place, one of the few in which that is the case. And it is beautiful inside.

This is the first and last time that I dine at this restaurant. I am of Japanese descent, so I decided to order the Udon noodles...how can anyone mess up a simple plate like this! Well let me tell you that what I got was an embarrassment to anyone who knows anything about Japanese cuisine. The broth was filled with vegetables like carrots, cabbage, onions...and I would not get into the taste...overall the experience was not enjoyable since the booth I was seating on shared the same backrest as the one next to it and every movement that I made was felt by the other couple seating there and viceversa....
(1)U L.
OKay, so I've been to Soho few times, I've tried few entrees from the kitchen. They were OK except the duck entree. Im guessing that it was frozen for a while (smelled awful) and they put too much sauce to cover the smell or taste or something. However, I like their sushi. Almost fresh, nice and thick. Service is good but not consistent. I guess it depends on the each servers.
(3)Cory H.
The food was decent but the service was horrible. The couple that sat with us said it's usually like that, prompting us to wonder why they'd bother returning if it meant getting ignored throughout the service and having your meal screwed up. We'll be keeping our business at Hana Yori.

Very boring sushi with outragous prices for the quality of food! Will not be back, I could make better sushi at home.

(5)Wink B.

We arrived 5 minutes before the place was closing, they didn't mind at all. They stayed for over 30 minutes over for us They were kind, fast and the food was fresh and delicious!

(3)Rory K.

(4)Dawn D.

(5)Laszlo N.

Called for reservation the day before. When arrived was told we would be seated momentarily, waited for over an hour to be seated. Waitress messed up our order twice. And still never got the beer I ordered.

(4)Angela B.
(4)S Y.
(4)Kari L.
(5)Annie H.

(2)Jason R.
(4)Ashley D.

(3)Jeff L.
(4)Trish T.
(5)Eric L.
One of two places worth getting sushi in Michiana. Great sushi, relaxing environment, average service. Never had to wait for table. Good place for date night or party of 6. Prices standard.
(4)Mark W.
(1)Rob W.
(2)David L.
pretty good rolls. good beer list. a little expensive. i've gone twice and am not disappointed, but it's not the best sushi i've had.
(3)David I.
Great Japanese fare. Sashimi, miso soup & yaki soba were all authentic and prepared nicely. We also enjoyed the mellow atmosphere, as well.
(4)Brian Z.
(2)Tyler C.

(1)Christine S.

We arrived 5 minutes before the place was closing, they didn't mind at all. They stayed for over 30 minutes over for us They were kind, fast and the food was fresh and delicious!

Absolutely disgusting food on tables, dishes and chairs. Rude waitresses and staff. Left before eating. Understaffed. Should have been a negative 10.

(5)Laszlo N.

(5)Jorge K.
(1)Erin C.
(1)Rachael G.
(5)Kori E.
(4)Angela B.
(4)S Y.
(4)Kari L.
My very favorite restaurant. We drive over an hour to get there and I would say we go at least once a month. Their sushi is phenomenal!
