My husband and I have eaten there a few times and we very much enjoy the quaintness of the place and the food is overall excellent! We've had a couple of instances of something being too dry (spinach ball appetizer) or chippos not being crunchy, but for the most part everything is great! I love the variety of options and some of the unique dishes they serve. Will be a long standing place we visit.

We drive through Northern Indiana and Ohio several times a year and we found another winner with Yelp. Timbuktoo features really yummy American food. The food was thoughtful comfort food. My polynesian chicken dinner not too sweet with just the right amount of savory, my husband's hamburger was to die for (my daughter and I had to have a taste!), my eight year old's half 'fruit' salad with chicken looked like a whole salad (and even at full price $8.95 was worth it since she ate veggies, fruit and chicken) and we shared a stupendous derby pie big enough for three chocoholics. The service was very good, bordering on too casual, but prompt and friendly. The atmosphere was fun, a mix of log cabin and home style. We will definitely stop by again.

Worst black bean burger I've ever had. Burnt bun - sent it back and asked for a different bun uncooked only to discover inside was an undercooked something with a gross texture. Waitress was nice, but didn't even ask how my meal was. Obviously knew the answer so didn't want to ask. If I could figure out how to add the picture I took I would.

I wouldn't say an "over-the-top" joint - but it was fine and I would definitely go back. The appetizers were good - with some unique ones on the menu. For my entree, I ordered the almond crusted walleye. It was enjoyable. And the yam fries were a nice departure from regular fries. Overall, good.

Booyah Timbuktoo's! This place is beyond welcoming, just about the warmest and most wonderful place to stop by when traveling through the north of Indiana. Stopped here with friends on the way to Chicago and was met with a great atmosphere and a totally wicked sick salmon burger. The salmon was off the chain, yam fries were awesome too! Must stop by you won't regret it, best road side stop of my road trip.

We took a party of 7 on a Saturday night. We had a reservation and our table was ready when we got there, however, once we were seated it took a loooong time for anyone to approach us. When our server finally came, she was very friendly but also very flustered. It took 15 minutes to get our drinks and even longer for drinks from the bar. We ordered appetizers, which we also waited a very long time for. Our food finally came and it was delicious! I would recommend going to Timbuktoos if you arent in a hurry and dont mind waiting for everything. The only saving grace of the experience was that the food was really delicious!

love love love. A couple of friends and I stopped here for lunch while traveling to Ohio. The server took good care of us, and made sure we were in good shape before heading back out on he road! Beyond the food, there was an atmosphere in Timbuktoos that made me feel happy and cared about; sort of like visiting a family member that you haven't seen in a while. Timbuktoo's was a great alternative to the usual highway faire of McDonalds and Taco Bell! BRAVO!

What a find. We drive from DC to Milwaukee once a year, and after stumbling upon this little log-cabin gem in the middle of nowhere, we decided to always stay in Fremont from then on just so we can eat here :) This is food made with love baby.

The vegetables were frozen from a bag. The mashed potatoes were too salty and the Sea scallops were overlooked. This was close to the highway but not worth it.

Stopped off to shop at the outlet stores and searched yelp for a good place to eat. Not many choices out in this small town but Timbuktus came up highly rated so we tried it. The location on yelp and google maps is wrong do your best bet is to call them. They are right across the road from the golf course. My wife and I had the chicken sandwich and it was fantastic. What a pleasant surprise to get such great food in such an oddball place. Really loved the hand made potato chips and sweet potato chips. A must stop if your in the area

If you are a road warrior like me and would rather spend your money at local places than national chains, this place is a must. It's Awesome for any city in America. Even better that its in rural America! Great food and service with a staff that really wants to please.

I was disappointed in Timbuktoo's. We stopped for a cocktail and the bartender was friendly and helpful. The menu looked interesting and they featured the local Statec wines so we decided to return on a Thursday night for dinner. The atmosphere was casual but when we arrived for dinner, I was surprised to see Formica tops on the booth tables. Our table had a cloth but napkins were paper. Not to sound snotty but this was not a sports bar and based on the menu and prices, I just thought it would be more upscale. The pseudo theme was hunting lodge but the restaurant decor was a little too slick and modern to carry that off. I would love to see a no cell phone policy instituted as there was a party of five - Grandma, Mom and three teenagers all texting and sharing loud You Tube vignettes to at their table. The waitress or manager should have asked them to cease. Ignorant patrons aside, the food was a disappointment. I had the wild caught salmon with dill sauce ($17.99). It was tasty enough but tepid in temperature. It came with a small portion of rice and I chose steamed vegetables as my side. The veggies were over cooked and dull. Steve had the strip steak ($19..99) and seemed satisfied. Both came with bread and salads. The salad was okay but also dull. Service was spotty. The place is small and we had to wave our waitress down for any request. She had four tables and did not seem to be overworked - just inattentive.

Seriously, did NOT anticipate the quality.... Holy schmoly- salmon burger that ranked right up there with the Ruths Chris' of the world. Chicken strips for the tweenager appeared to be homemade. Homemade soups that were fab-u-lous. And don't miss the desserts. We had a little trouble locating- they're right on the main drag down from the Bates, oh I mean Travelers, hotel. Fremont is not a Mecca, but when traveling on 69 again, I would certainly plan my pitstop around Timbukto!

Came in here for a quick lunch en route from Denver to New Jersey, it had a great homey feel and the couple was so sweet to us as we were passing through. The salmon burger and the honey glazed chicken sandwich were excellent and so worth veering the 4 minutes off of Route 80 for. Such a nice break from fast food!!!

Finding a place like this is exactly why I love Yelp. Like most Yelpers, I prefer to eat at locally owned restaurants. We never would have found this place if it weren't for Yelp. I wish I was getting paid by Yelp to say these nerdy things. We stopped for an extremely early dinner on our way back from Chicago, so we were the only people there. Service was prompt, friendly and helpful. The food came out quickly, but not too quickly. The environment was a little funky and eclectic, but I liked it. I think if I lived nearby I would frequent this place. The loaded baked potato soup was really delicious. I'm not typically a fan of potato soups, so I was really pleased. The salmon burger was OK. Salmon burgers remind me of my childhood and spending time with my dad, so I had high hopes. It wasn't as good as the burgers that my dad made growing up, but the chippos (homemade chips) were delicious. Being from the middle of nowhere in the Midwest, I know it can be hard to find good, independently owned restaurants. This place is a gem on the trip from Columbus to Chicago. I will definitely be stopping here the next time I make this trek.

It was a super hot day and I was traveling with my dogs. I enjoyed a cold beer on the porch while they prepared my take-out order of a salmon burger and yam fries. It was delicious and the staff was friendly and helpful!

What a pleasant surprise to find this restaurant! I grew up in this area of NE Indiana, and I'm pretty sure that this place wasn't here when I was younger - if it was, I was missing out! As a vegetarian, I always struggle with finding veg-friendly restaurant options in this area of the state. Auburn has added a couple of places with good menu options recently, and now I can add this place in Fremont to the list! The food was extremely good - and plenty of options on the menu for both vegetarians and omnivores. It is definitely on the pricier side, though, so be prepared for that. My only complaint is that the service, while friendly and helpful, was on the slow side. That might have been because we were a larger party (10 of us) on a weekday night - I think they only had one waitress working for the whole restaurant.

We came here late on a Saturday night. They kept the place open an hour later for us and some other people who had just been at the Notre Dame football game. I had the Grouper Reuben. Nicely toasted, marbled rye. Tasted really good. The "Yam Chips" were a lot better than the "Chippos" which my friend had. The corn chowder was very nice. Pieces of potato and some veggies to go along with the corn. The crab cakes were good as well. The almond encrusted fish my friend got wasn't that great (he didn't finish it). All in all, the food was good and the atmosphere was log cabin eclectic. The service was good as well. It took a while to get our check (because it was late), but our food came out quickly and tasted good. I would go back.

Our family has a small cabin on one of the lakes around this area. We rarely go out when in the area and pretty much grill anything we're eating. Fortunately, we've found a place that we can go out to if the evening calls for it. Timbucktoo's is pretty new. The location used to be the herb garden, a great restaurant. This was followed up by a horrific cuban restaurant that all but killed this prime location. Timbucktoo's is slowly bringing patrons back to this restaurant location. I went with a friend and we both had the almond crusted walleye. The fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The menu is mostly typical fare, outside of its seafood highlights. Everything was done well. A huge party was finishing up as we were seated. The cook must have been overworked during that time slot, but still came out to our table to ask how the food was and answer any questions we had. As we discussed where he was sourcing his walleye from and how fortunate he is to be receiving fish with few or small Y-bones, I realzed what a rarity this was for me. While this is common practice for chefs, perhaps I haven't been patronizing the right establishments. In Chicago, I sometimes look for out-of-the-way places. If not there, I'm usually going with friends to an 'in' restaurant. The problem is that I chef would kill themselves trying to make small talk with a bunch of people who are convinced they're better cooks than the chef who just prepared their meal. Damn hipsters. It was a real breath of fresh air to speak with the cook as we enjoyed our meal. Next time I'm with a group looking for a restaurant when we're at the lake, it's Timbucktoo's to the rescue.,

Okay, this place has it all! Great food, a really cool atmosphere and plenty of room for seating. The food: I've been here about 4 or 5 times and had something different each time. I have been extremely pleased with everything I've ordered! The Almond Crusted Walleye is phenomenal! And Yam Fries!!! Need I say more? Alright, I will...they are amazing especially with the sauce that comes with them. The desserts are incredible (try the rhubarb cream pie), and made fresh by the owner's mother (who owned the restaurant before)! The chef Is one of the best around. His dishes aren't overly extravagant, which is nice, because some people go overboard and ruin the food. But he doesn't make anything bland either, everything is just right, and simply fantastic! Tasty doesn't even describe it! The atmosphere is too cool! The place is actually a log cabin that someone had built a couple of decades ago. She sold it and the people who bought it added a pro kitchen and opened up the restaurant. There are 3 different dining areas, including an upstairs, and all are very roomy. It's usually packed on the weekends (and sometimes through the week, too!) so there might be a small wait, but IF you do, it's WORTH IT!!! The staff is great! Very friendly and very accommodating. If you go and you're waitress is a young girl named Karey leave her a good tip; she's excellent!

What a find! The Yelp App saves the day again!! We were driving back to Chicago from PA and wanted to avoid boring fast food so we turned to the Yelp App for some lunch guidance. Timbucktoo's turned up and we were so psyched that it was right off the highway. Little did we know that we had stumbled upon a gem. They have a great beer and wine selections and do wine tastings on the weekend, mostly wines from a local winery. There are excellent seafood selections! I went with the salmon burger with dill sauce and yam fries. YUM. I imagine Timbucktoo's is great for dinner. The service and decor also get five stars. If you are anywhere near Freemont, check it out!

We were excited to find a non-chain restaurant with good yelp reviews close to the highway while travelling from Cleveland to Chicago. The problem we had.....which wasn't the restaurant's fault, but will be a legitimate issue for other hungry long distance travellers ... Was that the bridge from the exit ramp (exiting from westbound on the turnpike) over the highway to Timbuktu was completely closed for construction yesterday. We were determined to support a locals place, so we dutifully followed well marked detour signs back to 120.....which probablty took us 12-15 miles in a big loop back. Never did we expect such a long detour! Had we known, we literally could have parked the car and walked over the bridge to Timbuktu. Getiing back on the turnpike after lunch was a snap, the entrance ramp was on the Timbuktu side of the bridge. Anyway, I have no idea how long the bridge will be under construction, but travellers looking for someplace with an easy on and off will want to consider the detour hassle for some period. As for the food, it was very good, but service was thin. Our waitress was cooking and serving and taking checks.....maybe not her fault, but when you are driving to chicagonyou don't appreciate having to go i to the kitchen to find someone to pay for your meal so you can leave. My brother had the salmon pattie sandwich and loved it. My sister-in- law liked her polynesian chicken sandwich but thought it could have used some sauce or something. I had a fish and chips special which was a far cry from McDonalds filet o fish, although not fantastic. Another oddity, we all ordered cups ofnsoup, there were three soups on the menu that day. Some time after we ordered, the waitress appeared and said the soup would be awhile because it was still cold......this was at 1:30 pm.....well into the lunch hour. Huh. Well, our corn chowder was really very good and clearly homemade when it arrived, but we found that odd. So.......I would go back if travelling by there again as long as the bridge was open. Cute place, we just seemed to have a string of weird blips that day.

AMAZING! I stayed overnight at the comfort inn (went on a road trip along I-80), and the lady at the front desk recommended this place. The staff was very nice and welcoming, and the food was great! I had the maple salmon salad and yam fries--cooked perfectly and very fresh. The price was very reasonable (my salad was $9.99 and very filling), and they have a nice selection of wine. If I ever end up in Fremont, Indiana again, I'll definitely come here!

Our Waitress was very nice and professional. She always had a suggestion such as featured summer sangria which was good. That's about where it ended. Our salads were very small and dinner rolls were commercially bought...nothing special. My husband had the grilled seafood stack which was suppose to be a layer of crab, then shrimp, grouper served over rice. He never found the crab unless it was pressed into a doughball pancake. Description stated crab not crabcake. Big difference. Rice was so miniscule that the doughball masked any flavor it might have had. Sided with sweet potato chips which were a bit overcooked served with a cinnamon sauce that had a film on the top served in a plastic cup. I had the shrimp and scallops sided with recommended redskins smashed potatoes with fresh chives. The seafood which is delicate seemed to have been cooked then put in the broiler. Broiling the scallops brought it up to a temperature no scallop or shrimp should ever have to endure let alone having to let it cool before I could eat it. To make matters worse the smashed potatoes I beleive we scooped out of a much earlier prepared quantity then microwaved as it was warm around the edges and cool in the center while getting that microwave pasty texture. Never found s the fresh chives. We passed on the "wonderful tomato bisque" that the waitress bragged it was made yesterday!!!! They admit to serving leftover soup. Gasp. On last thing about the premises which has had no updating or repairs in the last 20 years or so when the owners mama ran the Herb Garden which the old sign flaps in the wind...our lamp shade kept falling off the base. Another regular customer came over to our table to show us the trick in keeping the shade on. We saw all it took was a tightening of a set screw which obviously no one cared enough about to tighten. Tim, the owner brags he has had no culinary schooling. Dah...it certainly shows. If you have any desire to eat food as it was meant to be just keep on driving.

We We on a cross country trip and found this place on Yelp. It was a great find. The food was great. We had bacon bobs chicken and sweet potato chips. I never had the sweet that way but I loved them. The only reason for 4 stars is because the service was super slow. What should have been a quick meal with no appittizers, took 2 hours. Waitress was nice but 2 hrs is too long.

We hate chain restaurants. This is NOT a chain. It's an old-school, Mom and Pop establishment with honest homemade food and a fun atmosphere. Found it on Yelp on the way from Virginia to Iowa/Nebraska and we would stop here again. Friendly staff. We had Salmon burgers, pecan-crusted walleye and homemade chocolate fudge cake. We came here around 230, so it was pretty empty besides us. I ordered the southern fried chicken barbecue sandwich, which was very tasty. I like the kind of french fries they served with it. the atmosphere of the place had a very log cabin vibe to the outside and the inside looks nice as well, though I feel like it could have been cleaner.

Very very good food! Friendly service and very tasty. We sat on the porch and really enjoyed ourselves. Would highly recommend this place and will return when ever I am back in the area. Several in our party had the fish and some had the Philly cheesesteak and everyone really enjoyed them. Con: Not a lot of room for parking, we were pulling a trailer and it was pretty tight surroundings. You will not regret. Great place!

I was not at all happy with my food. The rice tasted like microwaved Rice a Roni. The shrimp and salmon was way overcooked. Their "Yam Sauce" had absolutely no flavor. I liked the Yam Fries (which were more like chips) and the spinach artichoke dip was pretty good. My Mascoto Lemonade was the savior of the evening. Also, we waited for about 20 minutes to order and another 45 for our meals.

Off the beaten path i80 turnpike and I 69,, we found this lunch location. Service friendly and service fast. Wife had the crispy chix salad which was tasty and plentiful, I had the grilled chix with sautéed sweet onions and cheese served on a grilled bun, very nice. Enjoy

I hosted my sisters bachlorette party dinner at Timbucktoo's. What an amazing place to do so! The party area is tucked in an upper level of the restaurant, the perfect venue for any dinner party Dinner was beyond fabulous, everyone's meal was cooked perfectly and came out exactly as specified. Timbucktoo's has perfect "fancy" atmosphere, delicious gourmet food and super fun and friendly staff and chef. The chef even came out and talked to us to make sure everything was to our liking and even took a picture with the bride to be as a memento. Planning to visiting again soon and can't wait to host more large dinner parties their too! Thanks for a wonderful experience!

After seeing the 4.5 star rating on Yelp I was expecting more than cold and mediocre food. I went to Timbuktoo's with a group of 9 people, including two children, this week and was very disappointed. While the service was ok, the real problem came because they were out of a variety of things including salmon, milk (which the waitress said they have been out of since the previous day), black bean burgers, and, for a period of time, frosted mugs for beer. In addition to the restaurant not having a good portion of the menu, when the food did come out it was cold. The food itself tasted mediocre, but the fact it was cold pushes it into "I don't want to eat this again" territory. Ambiance is ok, but some of the tables don't have table clothes (or at least two of our three did not) which I found a little odd. Lastly, just a small thing that bugged me was I ordered the portobello sandwich and elected to make it a platter, which comes with soup and a side. I asked if instead of the soup I could have a side salad, which they said was a no-go. While this certainly wasn't the biggest problem with the meal, I thought that the restaurant should have the option for soup or salad like so many others do.

Hubby got the cheeseburger soup which he wouldn't get again. It's a good restaurant with great menu options. We will be back!

This place is one of our regular go-to restaurants when we are up at the lake. I love the cakes trio, their crab cakes are fantastic. The other best part is their appetizer spinach balls. Absolutely amazing.

Stopped in while traveling through Indiana. Fun atmosphere, service was good. The food was good but I wouldn't say it was amazing. I had the burger, ordered it medium, it didn't have even the faintest touch of pink. Philly steak was over seasoned and a little salty.
