I'm NOT a big hot dog fan BUT I do love coney island they do it right! !! The post earlier saying Coney Island is a shit hole is just NOT true. It's a true landmark and we have eaten there for years!

  • Trance Gemini B.

It doesn't matter if this crap hole is a "land mark" of Fort Wayne, the food is sub par, they wouldn't know what a real coney was if it bite them on their wiener stand. The environment is depressing, the staff and management are rude, and what they call coney sauce is nothing more than dry hamburger.

Historic landmark, a must try if you are in the Fort. One of the few "real thing" left in town. Try one and you will want more.

This place is stuck in the past right where it belongs, it's just like walking into the classic coney islands in Detroit, you're greeted by the person behind the counter that takes your order and makes your food, within seconds the dozen coneys you ordered are in your hands, making McDonalds look like amateurs in the quick service business. Now, as far as the coneys, they're steamed, and a touch soggy, not what you'd expect of a Detroit coney, but exactly as it should be for Ft Wayne. Now, onto the rest of the dog, it's slathered with a touch of mustard, and a coating of chili, which is thin, but flavorful, then covered in a mountain of onions. Order a few of them, get a bottle of coke and sit down at the counter, and let yourself go and enjoy your time, somewhere in the distant past.

Grew up in Fort Wayne now live in Indy. No one does it like Coney Island. Always a must stop when back in town.

Great place celebrating 100 years. I'm bias being a Fort Wayne native, but I have had other hot dogs at other towns and they don't compare.

    (5)
  • Krystal K.

The best damn dogs I've had around! The pie is amazing!!! I'll take 3 straight up! With a bottle of coke. Banana cream pie is my all time favorite, but you should try the ones from Ossian! The crust is the best ever. When I come visit, you'll see me there :))

  • Manuel C.

Came here with my friend Shannon. Coney's menu is very simple. Hot dogs, burgers and chili. Ordered two coney dogs to eat and two to go. Service was quick and professional. I also ordered a cup of chili. It was okay but good. The menu has not changed since the early 1900s.

When I visited Fort Wayne, I (of course) Yelped places that got a good amount of reviews. This popped up, so we tried it. It's located in the downtown part of Fort Wayne, and on a Sunday, it was like a ghost town. Weird haha. Went inside and discovered that this place only excepts CASH. Asked the guy if there was a local ATM, and there is, but it's not really within walking distance. So we drive over to the bank where the ATM is, pay the service charge, and go back. The food was okay. Tried the coneys, and they were just mediocre. I've had better. Service wasn't that great either. Their servers consisted of teenagers who seemed like they just hated their jobs. If I was back in this area, I don't think I would come back here.

  • David B.

It's a classic. Best chili period.

  • Dale B.

It's a Fort Wayne tradition and must!! The dogs are good. The service is speedy. The shop has a lot of nostalgia!

  • Jacob S.

Growing up in Ft. Wayne, these hot dogs are my gold standard. It's not for everyone, but I genuinely haven't had a better dog yet.

  • Kara B.

I am not usually a hot dog fan and my husband claims to never like coney dogs but this place was a win for both of us. Perfect late night snack or lunch.

Fort Wayne's Coney Island is truly one of a kind. If you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing this place yet, you should definitely give it a try!

  • Mike C.

This is like the hot dog version of Powers hamburger - it's loved by loyal locals, but it's just a hot dog place. They taste like hot dogs. Not 'great' hotdogs either. Just plain ol' steamed hot dogs.

    (1)
  • Fred F.

What makes this place so special is the depth of flavor of the chili sauce. Definitely one of the best ever, far surpassing many of the shallow one note sauces of many highly touted places on the east coast. Dogs themselves are also great. Awesome old time atmosphere too. Simply superb in every way. Except for the fact it's in Fort Wayne, which is pretty dismal.

  • Marie W.

We've been going here since I can't remember when. The owners and people who work here are always friendly (and busy!). The coney dogs are great. I find myself comparing any other coney dogs to theirs. And they always taste better in the restaurant. We've gotten them to go before and while they're good, I think the atmosphere of the restaurant and the people are what make them remarkable. The chili is good too just on its own. We love this place.

    (5)
  • Cory M.

Was an awesome experience for my fist time eating here. I found it to be pretty cool that you can walk in through the back. The food was delicious and the service was fast requarding on how busy they were. There can be a bit of a wait when they packed busy but non the less I would definitely go back. It's also a great place if you want to keep a short budget.

I can say I not a super traveler and have eaten Coney's from across America, but I think it would be hard pressed to find many that can compare to the one's made here in Fort Wayne. They are to die for. The service is always good, the dogs, amazing, the chili is just their sauce, but my god it's so good with some oyster crackers. And as of recently, tada! They now take plastic. They have for 100 years taken cash only. Now you don't have to plan ahead and find an ATM and pull cash from somewhere. You can go in and live like you're in the 21st century and slap a card down. If you're from out of town, give it a go. It's one of our treasures here in the Summit City.

    (5)
  • Bill F.

Their meat sauce is amazing and pairs well with yellow mustard and minced onions. And they take credit cards now. I love this place and eat there as often as I want a guilty pleasure.

There are many restaurants in Fort Wayne, but few as iconic as Fort Wayne's Coney Island. Since 1914 they've sharpened their skills to make a great chili dog with remarkable service. Though they've been around for a long time, they recently decided to step into the next generation...you now can pay with a credit/debit card. Recently a relative and I stopped in to take in the old-time culture and cuisine and were met immediately with a waiter, ready to take our order. Literally within minutes we were greeted with the fun aroma of steamed hot dogs covered with chili, mustard and plenty of onions. And of course, don't forget your old school, classic coke, served in a bottle. I've been there several times with my relatives and grands, and usually have very little trouble convincing them to chow down...they love'em. The staff have also added other side foods now to go along with your meal. Many businesses in town could learn a lot about serving their customers from this restaurant. There usually isn't a wait, once you're seated, and they're always looking for ways to serve you. It reminds me of Henry Ford's quote, "A business absolutely devoted to service will have only one worry about profits. They will be embarrassingly large." When you drive by in the evening sometimes, you know this is true...the line is outside the door, and customers are waiting for, yep, you guessed it, can you believe it, a hot dog! They must be doing something right for sure. Thanks for keeping up the great work, Coney Island staff, for catching the baton, and not dropping it in the process of continuing a legacy. Hats are off to you! What a fun experience, stepping back in time, as we exit out the back door through the kitchen to find our car in the parking lot...

Cute little diner in the heart of downtown. A Fort Wayne staple.

Fort Wayne is a bit of a food desert, but Coney Island Wiener Stand is an oasis. The menu is very simple. Coneys, hamburgers, baked beans, chili soup, pie, soft drinks, bagged potato chips. That's it. Either sit down at a table or the counter or get an order to go. The dogs are pretty small (think grocery store dogs) so you will probably want 3 or 4. But they're totally worth it. If you order a coney with everything it comes with coney sauce, cayenne pepper, raw onions, and mustard. You also can add cheese. Note: It's a cash-only business so be prepared.

  • Preston P.

Coney Island is a Fort Wayne classic with many imitators but nobody comes close. The restaurant just celebrated its 100th anniversary. My wife and I love coming here. We get their coney dogs with everything (coney sauce, mustard and onion). Their baked beans are pretty great too! We highly recommend it! And they even just started taking credit cards so it is convenient.

My first review was from memory, The last time I was there was about eight years earlier! And I am not happy to report that there have been some changes, not improvements. The coffee maker was sent to California, to be rebuilt. Since they could not find any parts (it was a gas powered machine). Then shipped to a museum in Michigan; they did give a history of Coney Island along with some pictures though. The dogs are still high quality (flavorful), and do not need to be smothered in Coney sauce. And the hot dog buns still do fall apart, once in a while. When they are made. About one block away in the bakery. Other than that, it's still about the same. THE PICTURES I JUST ADDED:

As a Fort Wayne native - there is nothing better than Coney Island for lunch! Steam buns, chili sauce with plenty of chopped onions! Coke in the bottle and the place looks the same today as it did when I was a kid or a college student with a summer job downtown. My dad coming home from GE with a box of Coney's was a great day! My wife and daughters don't understand my excitement - but I go to Coney Island on every trip to the Fort to see my parents! Once you have had steamed buns - hot dogs are never the same without steamed buns!

  • Michael H.

hot dogs that taste like you bought them from Walmart.... chili dogs? that is not chili, that is red hamburger water.... you can not fling chili out of a bowl onto a hot dog. for Fort Wayne, they're not bad.... not great either. a Great chili dog has thick chili and a natural casing hot dog... not some pink ballpark wanna be.... service is non existent.

    (2)
  • Joe I.

Steamed buns are great, 40's ambience is great, and love the little bottles of coke, & paired with christmas lights in the winter makes this a great little stop for a snack and a chance to warm up. However, I am just not a fan of their hot dogs and their special sauce. I'd get almost anything else to eat besides that. I am pretty sure you have to be brought up eating these to enjoy them.

  • Dave B.

The menu is simple. Coneys, burgers, chili, not much else. They also serve fountain Pepsi, and have a very old school refrigeration unit that they keep canned and bottled sodas in like Faygo and glass bottle coke. The building is old, and the restaurant is a charming greasy spoon diner with pies in the case behind the counter and an old school cigarette vending machine at the front door. Reminds me of places my grandfather would tell me about when he was younger. I had heard mixed reviews about this place and being raised on Detroit style coneys I was a skeptic. The coneys are different then I've ever had before. Hey use a lightweight chilli with a little meat, standard mustard and onions. The dog had nice flavor, you can see them grilling right as you walk inside the door. The chili you could barely tell if it was there or not. I can't say it detracted, but certainly didn't add a new level of flavor. You can't beat the prices though. Very inexpensive and very fast service. I'm giving this place 3 stars for the food, the 4th is for the nostalgia factor. The food is worth a try, but the experience brings back good old memories.

We stopped here after seeing such good reviews on Yelp while in Ft. Wayne. Keep an eye out if you're driving--it's just a small building mixed in with all the others on the street. It was a little more "classic" and "traditional" than we expected, but was a nice place to just kick back and enjoy some food. We all got coney dogs, some got baked beans, some got chili, and some chips. The baked beans were really sweet, almost too sweet, but were still very good. The dogs themselves were delicious. Nothing too extravagant, but tasted great. Steamed buns, good dogs, a somewhat sweet chili. Food is cheap, menu is simple, service is great, people are friendly. The atmosphere is just a nostalgic, traditional restaurant. (If you've ever been to Kewpee in Lima, it's very similar to that.) Overall, a pretty good place to stop and grab a quick bite to eat.

Coney Island is a Fort Wayne staple and I love their hotdogs..actually their cheeseburgers are good too! But the last two times I've been there, the service has really ticked me off. It took forever for someone to come over and take my order, and it took forever for them to ring me up. And all the workers stand around and do NOTHING. They literally walk right by you and pretend like they don't see a $20 bill sitting on the counter. They are all a bunch of losers. But what do you expect with an absent manager.

    (2)
  • Dennis W.

I stopped in after two years to check out one of my favorite chili dog restaurants. They were much busier than my previous time there. We had to wait about ten minutes for a couple stools at the counter. No biggie. Everything was the same. Tasty spicy Greek style chili over a tasty dog and steamed buns. The waitress was wearing a "we have steamed buns" tee shirt. I had a bowl of chili "soup" and three chili dogs with a glass bottle Coke. Tasty times two. To the gentleman who doesn't like his dogs to be pink inside, hot dogs are cooked before they hit the grill. There is no such thing as a raw hot dog. Yes the natural casing dogs with their audible snap are great, but you should make some room for these humble diner dogs too.

Passing through, this placed seemed like a good place to try for lunch. It's located right in downtown Fort Wayne and not that far away from our route through Fort Wayne. I have never, ever had a coney before, so I knew going in this was going to be an interesting experience. The experience actually reminded me of being in a hot dog joint in Queens... Service was no nonsense. No, grilled onions are not an option, on the owner's order. They did have bottles of Coke and the steamed buns were quite good. I ended up sort of happy I endured the raw onions on my coney-the crunch and sweetness paired well with some really good chili, although perhaps not enough of it. The meat was quite good and moist, but in terms of flavor, just shy of the dogs produced by Vienna's in Chicago. The barbecue chips were also very good. Remember, this opinion is coming from a guy who thinks Chicago-style, everything but ketchup hot dogs are the epitome of the hot dog world. Your mileage may vary.

What can I say? This is a Fort Wayne classic! Coney Island Wiener Stand has been in business since 1914?! That's over 95 years, so let their experience really be the deciding factor that you should go here! They pride themselves in saying that their buns are steamed, they're still rocking out that vintage hot dog joint look, and they still offer Coca-cola out of the glass bottles. Everything is time-tested and top-notch What could be better?!?... Perhaps efficiency.... There does tend to be times where they receive a bunch of large orders 30+ hot dogs for take-out at one time. Nothing wrong with big orders but if you happen to be behind them in line for take-out for 2 coney dogs it can be frustrating. Especially if there's three people in front of you with large orders, which has been my most recent experience. What they need is one of those 20 items or less check-out lines like Target or Wal-Mart. Back to the review: They serve long-gone Seyfort's Potato chips which used to be a local Fort Wayne business but have since left for Texas or somewhere. They serve chili, home-made pie, burgers, and hot dogs. So it's nothing fancy but a definite must-try for Fort Wayne. Also note, that they do only accept cash. Just a heads-up.

You guys make the best coneys I've ever had since my childhood. My wife and I have lived around the country and in Europe and everywhere we go, we find time to say 'damn, we wish we had some of them coneys" from that place on Main St. in FW. Chips and Cokes in a bottle are just perfect. And having the dogs on the big rollers when you walk in the door really gets the juices flowing, although last time, they were flowing all the way from North Carolina. Keep it up, CIWS, you're one of the great taste treats of my life! 5 Stars for doing everything right for a coney island.

Far and away the best coney dogs ever!!! My family goes once or twice a year and it is such a treat.

    (5)
  • Alex M.

Best Coney dogs around! Menu is nice and small so it isn't hard to make up your mind unless you are an idiot! Service is prompt and professional. Everything is so cheap also, you can't get full at any other restaurant for this cheap.

  • chico b.

Are you kidding??? I read the reviews for this place which is why I went. I love a good hot dog but the problem I had here is I don't like my hot dogs pink like they serve them. The hot dogs I like usually have spices and have casing like hot links etc...These reminded me of school cafeteria hot dogs that appear so pink they don't even looked cooked. I asked for a cheese dog and I ended up with a pink(undercooked looking) hot dog with american cheese slice over the top. I ate it anyway just to not be rude, also I thought what the heck....may as well - surprise me. I did try the chili and it was ok too. Nothing to knock there. Overall I was not impressed. Sorry but Parker's Hot Dogs in Roseville, CA makes a better hot dog than Coney Island.

Hands down the best coney dogs I have ever had. I have tried many, many others and nothing comes close. Every time I have bitten into a coney dog somewhere else, all I can think is that it's not as good as Coney Island in Fort Wayne. Maybe one day I will find one but I have yet to do it.

  • Alicia M.

I have been going to this restaurant ever since I can remember. In those 42 years very little has changed and that is a great thing! There is nothing like in Coney and a bowl of chili! I no longer live in the Fort, but I go back to Coney Island almost every time I come back to visit. Don't expect the wait staff to write down your order, it's all done by memory. And last time I was there, they didn't take credit cards, so have some cash in your pocket. My recommendation from the menu 2 coneys, a bowl of chili, and a bottle (or two...the chili has a little kick) of Coke. Finally, don't let the "hole-in-the-wall" appearance fool you. And, if you really want to look like a regular, come in the back door, through the kitchen. Seriously.

    (5)
  • Marie N.

I am a Fort Wayne native and embarrassed to say that I have NEVER eaten here until today. This place is a classic hole in the wall backed with a great history (family owned and operated since 1914), awesome small town atmosphere with friendly [happy] staff. For around $10, you can get 2 Coney dogs (get them with everything on top), a cheeseburger, bowl of chili, and a drink. The Coney dogs are on the "petite" size so if you're just wanting a hot dog here, order at least two. Although I've had better hot dogs before, there's something definitely special about this place and definitely worth coming back for repeat visits.

  • Christiana C.

I had seen this place featured in Rachael Ray, so I was jazzed when I could make a road trip detour through Fort Wayne. Consider me really disappointed. Bad service, the waitress never brought me half of my order, and got my dining partner's order wrong too. And when you have "cheese dog" on the menu above, "chili dog", I assume the cheese dog will not have chili. Apparently, I assumed wrong as I was scraping chili off my dog. No one came to check back, so I finally went to the counter to ask if I could pay my bill and a counter guy was really sarcastic with me (and not in a good way). So disappointing. I doubt I'll ever come back.

No other restaurant in the history of restaurants will capture my heart as much as Coney Island. Ever. I am normally a vegetarian, but I will eat every hot dog here. Coney Island, founded in the 1910s, is a hot dog place through and through. You can get a plain hot dog; a hot dog with their chili (hot, not sweet); or a hot dog with chili, onions, and mustard. Go for the last. They also serve hamburgers, bowls of chili, chips, and pie. They also serve glass bottles of coke, which is really swell. They do not take any credit or debit cards, so be prepared with cash. But as a hot dog costs about $1.50 with all of the toppings, you might just have that much on hand already. After my cousin got married, he and the rest of the wedding party came here in their limo. The manager saw the party and told them that their meal was on the house. What other restaurant is like that around town?

    (5)
  • Jeff R.

Coney Island is a Fort Wayne institution. My dad came here, your dad came here, and their dads dad probably came here too. Its like walking back in time to the 1940's. Everyone who lives in Fort Wayne probably knows where Coney Island is located and have probably eaten here once or twice. Located in the center of downtown there is usually something going on close by. I love it! The dogs with coney sauce and loads of chopped onions are pure joy! Add a bag of chips and a bottle of coke and anyone can be content for awhile. The only thing I don't like is the way they try to talk you out of ordering a hamburger. They always say "are you sure you want a hamburger because it takes about 15 minutes?" (They must not like their grill being tied up for that long) But that is fine with me because a Coney burger is worth the wait! I won't say better than the dogs but they are just as good.

I will never eat another coney dog ever again unless it is at this local Fort Wayne restaurant. Customer service is fast and friendly, and will ask you what you need every 5-10 minutes. From the inside of this restaurant, you can just see how the place comes to you as a real, local, inner-city downtown restaurant. By just walking by outside, you can smell the waft of coney dogs and it makes you come inside. My only negative is the parking lot out back. The lot was packed, so I had no choice but to block the alley (which I think is illegal, but I was just getting a dozen dogs to-go). Best restaurant in Fort Wayne along with Power's Hamburgers HANDS DOWN. PS: A true Fort Wayne native always enters through the back door.

Good coneys. We all like the steamed buns, even my hubby who doesn't like coneys, so he just enjoys a hot dog. Very friendly staff. Let them know if it is your first visit so they can give you the full spiel.

I recently moved to Fort Wayne to attend IPFW and my friend took me to this place. We got there and parked around back. I started walking around front and he told me we just go through the back. That was awesome, just walked through the kitchen and sat down. Doesn't get much more old school than this. Food is good and cheap, just remember to bring cash.

  • Ejiro I.

Love this place! Its just up my ally and literally depending on where you park right by the ally. Go ahead and seat yourself at the bar or a table, and get ready for coney deliciousness. So affordable you'd be silly not to get at least 3 dogs, or 2 burgers. They have Fort Wayne memorabila all around on the walls so you have plenty to look at while munching down. The staff is very friendly and lively bunch to say the least. Street parking is available, behind the restaraunt and besides the building in front of the National Tower. I stop by this place everytime I come to Fort Wayne and am never disappointed.

Life-long resident of Fort Wayne, and in all the years that I have been eating here, I have never been disappointed. I am kind of a Coney junky - I travel a fair amount for a living, and I make a point of searching out coney joints in every town I travel to. I can honestly say that I have now had the pleasure of eating in about 50 or so coney dog restaurants, and I have yet to find a place as good as this. Not sure if it is the food, the service, the little bottles of coke, or the fact that none of these things have changed since I was a kid. For whatever the reason, this is still my favorite place for a couple of coneys and coke. I hope it never changes!!!

A Ft. Wayne staple. The very best coney dogs ever. We don't even live in Ft. Wayne, but when we come here it is a must stop here. Great good, super cool atmosphere, and they still serve bottled Coke, they can't be beat!

  • Scott T.

While watching a Food Network show, I was reminded of this place. Still the best coneys I've ever had! One of the few things I miss about Fort Wayne...I would honestly go back there just for the coneys.

  • Matt M.

This place is amazing! Whenever I am in town I make a point of stopping in for an old school coney. On the way to Cedar Point, from Indy, with a van load of teenagers....I had to stop in for them to experience the atmosphere, the history, and a coney like they have never had. While there we witnessed a priest from Spain give Coney Island a blessing. I am hoping they will always remember that day and stop back in on their own someday.

  • Ted F.

Both my parents hail from Fort Wayne, so any visit back home included a visit to Coney Island and entering through the kitchen in the back. Best hot dog sauce in the world. Fortunately we have a very similar recipe, so we can make it at home in Florida.

Best coney ever, and an awesome atmosphere.

  • Jacqueline D.

Talk about old timey atmosphere this place has it. its been in business since 1914 serving up the best coney island hot dogs with mustard, white onions, and "sauce". Plus they steam your buns..and who doesn't love that? 6 inches of heaven I tell ya. and I don't say that about many dogs. I think Z would agree about that! i mean the 6 inches of heaven that is..not that Z knows a lot about that kind of stuff but he seemed to enjoy it...huh? the sauce is chili soup and its mighty good.. hot dog $1.25 extra onions will cost ya 6 cents.

  • Joe W.

Amazingly good. Never had a coney island before, went to Wayne of the Forts for business, found the review on yelp and went. You'll spend about 6 bucks and leave full and satisfied. A true slice of Americana.

Small town "joint" is as good as it gets. A very real "Original".The parking lot is a bit of a hassle but walking in the back door is pretty cool.

Coney Island is great! My father in law ate here as a kid and now my 5 year old loves it too. If I had not grown up in Skevanston, IL ( Poochies and Herm's Palace ) Coney Island would earn 5 stars.

I went for my first trip this weekend and loved it!! I had the cheese dogs with everything and a glass bottle of ice cold Coca Cola! YUM!!!

  • Jen M.

The best coney dogs in this city. I had never heard of or had a coney dog before moving here, and since trying this place, tried others in town, none are as good! I would go here more often, but they only take cash, and we don't carry cash much. The nostalgia of this place is charming and watching them make it in front of you is kinda neat. In my opinion, everyone should at least try this, as long as they like hot dogs!

    (4)

As good as a coney can get. A must stop for me each time I'm near downtown FTW.

    (5)
  • Martin L.

Been eating coney's here since 1948 and the Coney Island continues to be the standard by which all others are judged. All of you from coney Island havens around the country should make the pilgramage to Ft. Wayne . Regulars park out back and enter through the "kitchen" where mounds of fresh cut onions and vats of sauce guard the pearly gates of Coney Dog heaven.

Coney Island is a must stop if you are in Fort wayne. I lived there for 45 years and I miss it dearly. When I am back there, the family knows the drill. We all go to Coney Island In high school I walked 1.5 miles every day to eat lunch there. If memory serves me the dogs were 12 for $1.00 then. There is nothing in this world close to it. I have tried to duplicate the chili sauce and it just cannot be done. The Ochoa family have owned it since 1914 and still run it. The chili and burgers are also awesome but the dogs are the real thing.
