Steak 'n Shake is pretty legit! We were staying in Elkhart for a week and hit up this location twice! I wish they had one in Phoenix! I got the patty melt both times. The first time it was absolute perfection! I love the skinny fries that come out with the burger. My husband told me the way to eat the fries is to dip it in a side of cheese. I was not a fan of the cheese, it has zero flavor. I also got one of their shakes with my meal, super good! the second time we went we were on our way to the airport and I couldn't stop thinking about the patty melt, however this time when it came out it was a total bummer. The bread was not only barely toasted it was not toasted in some spots so the untoasted parts got very soggy :( The manager came over and had no problem taking my meal off the bill, they offered to make me a new one but we were on a time crunch. I will be going back here the next time we are in Elkhart!

Sweetest waitress ever, good prices & the food is so good! The waitress was very honest when I asked questions about good, also very patient. Our food was really delicious but came out at a nice speed as well. We were not in a rush at all but it was nice to know that they keep in mind people are traveling & want their food quickly. It was at a great location, right off of the highway. Not hard to spot at all. I would reccomend to anyone if I'm ever in the area again

They say "famous for steakburgers," we say "infamous for mistakeburgers." They say "in sight it must be right," we say "in sight something ain't right." They say "it's a meal!" We say "it's a meal?"

This place is disgusting! I went through the drive thru while in town for work and waited at the window for over 20 minutes before the lady remembered I was there and gave me my food. She apologized for forgetting, but come on....I was sitting within view. The fries and burger were ICE COLD! I threw it all away after a couple of bites.....just couldn't do it. Worst Steak 'n Shake experience I've ever had!

The WORST! Spent almost 2 hours there because the kitchen, service was SO SLOW. Adult food came out 20 minutes before the kids food so we waited to eat. When we went to the kitchen window to find out where the other food was, they asked us to help carry it out! By the time the kids food finally came out, adult food was cold.

Dine in service was good , but the take out food sucks!!!! Sloppy thrown together food , cold onion rings, nasty flavored fries, forgotten food and mistaken orders. SAD take out operation.

I think this place is great for fast food. It's a Wendy's type food with service. I took away a star because we waited too long for the food. Other than that, great stop. The servers were just awesome. They work super hard for the $2 tip on a cheap meal. And you MUST try the Nutella shake.

I read the reviews after I had been seated and ordered my food. All I can say is the restaurant was horrid. The manager acknowledged us right away and got us seated but according to the young lady who served us never notified her we were there. I'm not sure how she could have missed it as there were only three other tables with another server on the floor. Our service was quick and pleasant once we were approached. We ordered two chocolate malts and one was rancid. Even the smell was obvious when comparing the two. The fries were warm, one burger was hot while two were warm. The cottage cheese was ok and the pinapple was warm. The malt was removed from the bill and we left. We often make a 1:00 am Steak and Shake burger run to Gurnee Mills so I would like to think I have a bit of experience with their food. I would recommend passing this one on by.

The worst Steak & Shake location ever. I've tried this place twice. Service was terrible during a seated meal so the next time I tried the drive thru. Service is slow, even there & I was the only car there. And my order was wrong. I caught it & corrected it. And that the supposedly corrected order was messed up. It was nothing complicated... A number 1, no tomato, 2 orders of chicken tenders, and and 2 kids vanilla shakes. The food was gross. My kids refused the chicken fingers, after 1 bite. They tasted spoiled or bitter. Severely disappointed with the shake. Underwhelmed. And the fries were hands down the worst I've had in my life. They were unedible. Cold, stale, and made me gag. Two chances was too many. Won't return

This is the second time I've been to this location and the service was terrible. Sat Am, not busy and I'm waiting 40 min for breakfast??? It's just eggs and hash browns. The food was ok, but I damm near walked out because I was so mad about the excessive wait time. 3 servers standing around yapping, one of them with a tray of food in her hand that she should have been delivering. Guess her conversation was more important than her customers.

Worst place EVER. Last time we dined there, my entire family got food poisoning. Months later, I finally decided to give them a chance again because I was craving a Frisco Melt... bad decision... With only 2 cars ahead of me, it was 28 minutes from the time my order was placed until the food was in my hands... only to find out that they messed up my order (which was repeated correctly somehow at the speaker box) and I only received half of my food. I considered going back around but as there were now 5 cars in line, i didn't think that I had another hour to wait. When I got home I found my chili cup only 1/3 of the way full and the 1 Frisco melt that my wife and I had to split was super soggy with grease and the bread that should be toasted was raw bread with melted butter soaked into it. I'm done with this location. I assure you that I will never be back and that I will recommend to anyone that mentions it that they choose somewhere else to eat. They have a better chance of getting their order right at McDonalds, which says a lot.

I work nearby & NEVER ONCE have they gotten my order right! I continued to go there because it's close & I like steak n shake franchises. But I'm to the point where I will not even waist my hard earned money on those worthless employees! They might as well close this place down, the employees are making the FRANCHISE look bad!

The food is your average Steak n'Shake. The staff is horrible and pathetic. (Think "Restaurant Stakeout") they sat, talked, laughed and joked as we were waiting for our meal. (Which took forever) they were complaining about all of their issues, their paychecks, etc. and eating/drinking. Absolutely horrible and they all should be fired.

Steak and shake is one of the most consistent restaurants around The service is always great and so was the food. At this steak and shake unfortunately that is not the case I waited 30 minutes at the drive up and became so frustrated I just decided to go in, that was a mistake, they weren't even that busy I waited 20 minutes at the register to try to make an order somebody came over said I'll be right with you I waited and additional 20 minutes and then finally gave up. While I was waiting I saw the manager making the food. Clearly he has no pride in what he does he was doing a very very sloppy job and seem to care less of the quality of the food he was handing out.

Terrible service. 2 servers for the entire restaurant, which was crowded. Sat for 15 minutes before we just got up and left after not hearing from a server. In line at the drive thru now. Its been 9 minutes since we placed our order and we've gone from being 3rd in line to 2nd.. Ugh.

We were staying at the nearby Comfort Suites so I suggested eating at Steak 'n Shake as it seemed a very Midwestern thing to do. Or at least not New York or Philadelphia or DC or San Francisco because I've lived in those places and never seen a Steak 'n Shake. We went in and the place was a little reminiscent of Johnny Rocket's. They have a drive-up window but the place has a lot of booths for sitting down with waiter service. We ordered ours to go. I ordered to steak sliders - Buffalo and ketchup and onion. They were just OK. Not too impressive. Perhaps I should have ordered cheese on them. The meat was tough and not too juicy and tender. The shake on the other hand, much better. They top it with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. On Chopped they would call that solid plating. I saw that whipped cream and cherry and couldn't help myself with my vanilla shake which was good. I think next time I would try the peanut butter shake. Had one of those at Sonic other day. Good stuff.

This used to be my favorite "after hours" place to eat. I met up with some friends after the Halloween festivities and waited 10 mins for a soda and when it was finally brought to me it was the wrong kind of soda. The table in front of me waited for at least a half hour on there food and there was no one in front of them. Another table had to go look for their server because there was a hair in the milk shake. My server didn't introduce herself and she looks dirty. I'm very disappointed
