The huge bill board I saw said "Family Restaurant" - in the Mid-West, that means home cooking. We followed the sign to this vast expanse of a restaurant and were a little put off because the parking lot was near empty and the restaurant had one customer. Then I glanced down at my watch and saw it was 11:25AM on a Tuesday - maybe a little early for people who actually work for a living. The young woman behind the counter gave us the nickel tour, showing us the freshly cooked options and I decided that this could be the best meal we have had since we got to Indiana, 4 days ago. We had meat loaf, green beans and sour cream cheddar potatoes. In a word, WOW! Seriously good home cooking. Those potatoes are, as we say in NJ, ta die for... The meat loaf was juicy, hot and gently spiced. The green beans - they had bacon bits in there - real bacon, not from a jar bacon - so good, I ate every bit. The bill was a very reasonable $11 with a piece of - sorry to say - just OK cherry pie (my friend had the pecan pie and raved). As we ate, several regular customers came in and, being nosey, I asked their thoughts. They spoke highly of the food, family atmosphere and the value. If this restaurant was in my part of the world, there would be a line out the door every minute of the day - the food is that good. Best meal I have had in Indiana and I have eaten a lot over 4 days. Highly, highly recommended !

Love this family style restaurant 5 miles off of us route 64. Super clean bathrooms and tables for families and groups situated in Hoosier National Forest. The wasn't fancy but it was delicious and served cafeteria style which suited us cause we were in a hurry.

We were delightfully surprised when visiting this establishment. Folks may choose items via cafeteria style (and order from a menu) or via all you can eat buffet. Our pickiest eater was very pleased by the options. Portions were huge-some of the largest we've encountered. Food was delicious and staff were helpful and friendly.

We just enjoyed the most lovely lunch at Schwartz Family Restaurant. We have known Joe Schwartz for 6 years from the Bardstown Road Farmer's Market in Louisville. He is the master of hospitality and both the food and the atmoshere take you back to simpler times. The experience reminds you that sharing a good meal with family and friends is one of life's treasures. We will be back.

Great food and good prices. Very clean and attractive facility. A big improvement over usual roadside choices, just wish it was closer to home. It was even faster than fast food and a whole lot better

I asked the young lady behind the counter , What kind of pie is this? she said Blackberry , I picked them myself yesterday, and my sister picked the peaches for the peach pie. How many times has that ever happened in your life , for me it's the first. The real shocker of that statement is that it was true. We were at Schwartz Amish family restaurant in Eckery Indiana. This amazing restaurant is run by an Amish family. They grow all of their own food, across the road from the restaurant on their own farm. The girls stated during this time of year they are constantly picking something that is in season. Everything there is made from scratch, even the chicken that they serve comes from an Amish farm where no hormones or pesticides are used. The homestyle cooked food is amazing, the desserts taste different simply because all of the ingredients are fresh and used right after picking. It gives a whole new meaning to the words home made. The restaurant is run by the entire family which includes 12 brothers and sisters that all work to make the operation run efficiently. And yes it's their mother in the back who is doing the cooking. Absolutely one of the cleanest kitchens I have ever seen, it is spotless just like the rest of the restaurant. The restrooms sparkle. Treat yourself, if you ever travel I 64 W. stop off at exit 79 take a right and go north 5 miles and prepare you self for a unique experience.

We bought a place up by Patoka Lake last year so we pass this place every weekend. We have been to the restaurant at least 10 times and it never disappoints. It is a buffet but cafeteria style with 1 trip through and all you can eat which is by far the better deal. They have a classic Amish Style cooking that makes you remember the food your grandparents made. The pies are amazing; and the staff are always very friendly. I would highly recommend this place if you are in the area.

Food was ok but the service was terrible. Our waitress did not ask for cream with coffee... Nor were our tables cleared. A bill wasn't bought to the table either. I had to go to the cashier and tell her everything I had..... Unfortunate because that dinged them a star.

My family of 4 and I were here last night for dinner on the way home from a long day at Holiday World. Instead of choosing the cafeteria food, everyone, but me, decided to special order. They had burgers and pizza. They were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. I waited for their food to come out and then got a great plate of veggies. The corn was so fresh it still had a silk in it! They had picked it straight from garden. They even brought around a cart with fresh homemade ice cream! It was clean, a group of musicians were in the back room playing country and gospel quietly and the staff were incredibly friendly. We will go back the next time we are in the area, and everyone will order from the cafeteria menu.

Have you ever wished your great cafeteria of diner was a buffet? Here it is. A super fresh salad bar, good pies, savory meats and great sides. $10 lunch/$12 dinner. Plus every thing is made from Amish ingredients and recipes.

If you're traveling through Southern Indiana and feel a little hungry, but wearing your traveling clothes, consider SCHWARTZ FAMILY RESTAURANT. As the name says, it is really for family and the people who work there will make you feel at ease. The place is always spotlessly clean and the cooking is good, mostly Amish influenced as the Schwartz's are just a generation from the "old ways". Try the baked chicken. It's my favorite. Tell them David sent you. It won't get you a discount, or me either, but hard working people always like to know you are here by recommendation. Just as a "heads-up", this is a cafeteria style. Alcohol is not served. UPDATE March 4, 2012 -- Just ate here again -- must be 50 or more times now. This time we had Pizza and it was among the best we've ever had. We ordered a veggie but with ground beef. UPDATE 8/23/12 Well, my wife told me that the Schwartz Restaurant was having the "local" Soggy Bottom Boys featured Thursday night at their weekly music fest, so we had to go. The local musicians put on a good performance and the "Boys" did a bang-up job of singing: Man of Constant Sorrow. Aside from the good food, this restaurant is unique in that every Thursday night from 6-9, local musicians come in for a good ole fashion session of a mix of country and gospel music. I am amazed at the mix of raw talent -- and it's free. One other thing, none of the musicians use amplifiers. This is, after all, a family restaurant. ... still love the baked chicken.

So we rolled through Orleans and Paoli on Route 37 and wondered if we'd ever find a place to eat in St. Meinrad (not). And there, in the middle of nowhere, just before you get to highway 64 was this oasis. The cashier said that the highway commission cut her father's farm in quarters with an intersection and he decided it was time to change professions. Formerly Amish, the families used their heritage to make comfort food for wayfarers. This is no longer a buffet, but a cafeteria. And for $9.99, you can get all you care to eat. More homemade pie varieties than you've ever seen! (Pecan, Rasberry Cream, Oatmeal, Blueberry Cheesecake, etc.) .Vegetable sides liked creamed peas and broccoli casserole-- all the things that your mother used to make. Dimwits can complain that the waitress didn't give them cream for their coffee or bring the check to the table. This is Eckerty-- and just when you thought you might have to forgo eating, a mirage appears on one quarter of dad's farm. Such places are rare.

Nice family cafeteria style restaurant. We tried the apple crisp with a hot cup of coffee after a cold hike, it really hit the spot.
