I really like this place. We went on a Saturday evening and we got seated as soon as as walked in. Great salad bar, and everything was fresh. I loved the service too. I would make another trip from Indy for this experience.

Excellent service provided by Gail, attentive, quick, and pleasant!!! Every item was hot, the rolls were yummy, the clam chowder and broccoli and cheese soup were delicious! We ordered our steaks medium rare and they were cooked to perfection! I'm giving 4 stars because it would have been nice to have a little more seasoning on the steaks but all in all, I would recommend!

Went there for dinner with coworkers. Great rustic atmosphere, friendly staff and great food. I had a 12 oz rib eye. It was cooked perfectly and tasted great. I prefer a little more seasoning, but that is just a preference. The food is moderately priced but steaks are cooked over hardwood so it's worth it.

We have family in the area and for years and years we've been going to the Beef House when we come to visit. We hadn't been in a couple of years, but tonight popped in for dinner at 5pm. Our meal was overpriced with the salad bar mixed with fresh and wilted lettuce - like no one would notice! The broccoli and cheese sauce was terrible - where's the cheese?? The lady who greeted us looked as though she couldn't care less - like we were bothering her. The decor needs serious attention because they have the same old, tired tables and chairs they had forty years ago. No joke! No big crowds, but plenty of big clutter and filth everywhere we looked. The bathrooms were awful and looked like the floors hadn't been swept in weeks. The toilets need disinfected. The rugs in the entryway hadn't been cleaned in a very, very long time. And the windows! My goodness they looked as though they had not been washed in years. Come people, clean this place up!! We don't know why this restaurant is still in business. It's very poorly run. What happened???

This place is AMAZING for large groups. I cannot overstate how great they are for hosting group gatherings. We've been having a family reunion at the Beef House now for the past 5 years, and they are just GREAT! They have a huge private dining room that you can reserve for free, for anywhere from 20 to (guessing) 150 people--though we've never needed anywhere that high. With a huge group, you can get your own salad bar, and just about any size group gets their own waiter ensuring fabulous service. They have two options--a cafeteria line and cooked-to-order menu. Everyone has seemed super pleased with the menu items, but the cafeteria food while acceptable, is not haute cuisine--but neither is is priced that way. I love it for its ease, and affordable price. Their pie, on the other hand? IT IS THE BEST PIE EVER! And so cheap, we usually eat one and take a second piece home. It. Is. To. Die. For. Seriously, the pie might just make the entire meal worth it.

Nostalgic. If you live in the area, this surely is a perfect word to describe this restaurant. I came here on special occasions when I was growing up....birthdays, holidays, Mother's Day, etc. 30 years later and having not been here for 20 years, little has changed, so this place is very nostalgic for me. Whether you have been coming for 30 years and live in the area or are just passing thru and want a better meal option than just something that is a chain, stop by the Beefhouse. Family feel, very casual, a bit old school and good old fashion comfort foods. Healthiest options come from their salad bar, but know that it is not a vast salad bar. Absolutely have a dinner roll, it is a big part of the experience. Dollop on some apple butter or jelly for that extra bonus of deliciousness. Skipping on a roll is like going to NYC and never seeing the Statue of Liberty. On my visit, we were there for lunch and I had only the salad bar and rolls, so I cannot speak to the beef. My parents had the lunch specials, which seemed like cafeteria style a bit, but seemed popular amongst the busy lunch crowd. I remember the steaks though to be quite good. Although I no longer live in the area, if ever passing through again, I would stop in.

Are you in farm country and want a huge steak?! This is the place. No diet place here! (Maybe there is but I didn't look for it) Amazing rolls with apple butter or strawberry jam. Big salad bar and soup with most entrees. Couldn't eat my steak right away because we were so full. Fun time! Good food!!

Me and my friends ran across this place on accident on a motorbike ride one afternoon! We all ordered the sunday specials Prime Ribs Roast that day. It was about 8 ounces it was perfect it was served with fresh baked bread which was absolutely excellent! Salad bar and drinks were included with the meal! For the price I found it absolutely great!

Stopped in for a late lunch on our way from Janesville, WI to Terre Haute, IN on Black Friday. We were able to walk in and get seated right away (party of 7). Service was good, but not very outgoing. Prices on the lunch menu were reasonable (the dinner menu seems overpriced). Enjoyed the cafeteria line menu option... Though would be nice to be able to sample additional meats or the casserole (you only get to select one meat). My daughter had the Reuben and enjoyed it.

My husband and I split the Jack Daniels Strip Steak and the 12 oz Rib Eye. Both were great. The Strip steak had more flavoring because of the sauce in which it is cooked, Nice taste. The Rib Eye has no seasoning. Personally I like this. It seems now days chefs over season foods easily. I Love the taste of real beef. The Rib Eye was much juicier than the strip, of course. By the way. both steaks were ordered rare. Some reviewers complain of the modest sized salad bar. To me there is a sufficient amount of items. Our dinner came with soup, beef vegetable, which was great by the way, salad, rolls and apple butter which was also outstanding. All of this combined made for plenty of food. Why increase the size of the salad bar when you're trying to put down a 12 oz steak? Server was efficient and attentive. And when she didn't know which beer was the darker of two she found out from the bartender promptly.

WOW!! I'm so impressed!! I had never ate here and was totally shocked on how great the food is here!! We were on our way home for Illinois on Memorial day and stopped in to have a meal. To begin, the place looks like an old steak house, but not sure if it was or not. Anyway, do be alarmed. We walked in and was seated right away. The waitress was awesome, the rolls to die for and the salad bar was good, although I would have loved to have seen some eggs. As we were waiting on our food, the place got really busy! People waiting in line. We ordered the 6oz steak with baked potato and Liver and onions with mashed potato's and gravy. My steak was great! Maybe a little to well, as I ordered the steak Medium. But it was so tender, I couldn't have sent it back. No way. Baked potato was good. The Liver and onions tasted good, but kinda dry.Got about a cup of onions!! On the table was strawberries preserves and Apple butter. Omg, both were fantastic. I wish I could go again real soon, but thats not gonna happen for a while. This place rocks!

The fries were bad. The green beans were great!!! The steak a bacon wrapped fillet was not as favorable as i would of liked. The chicken was good and the burger was pretty ok. Super pricey though. Longhorn or Texas road house is cheaper and taste better. The wait staff was great.

Went here on a whim on a Friday night. It is amazing how large the place is. The server said that they have a 600 seat capacity. The atmosphere is not that great unless you are 60+. Very dated. Now to the food. I ordered the 12 oz ribeye. There was absolutely no flavor to it. It's like they didn't salt or season it at all. Not worth the $28. We also ordered some frog legs and the sauce was good but the frog legs were a little greasy. The rolls - kind of what they are known for I guess - were warm and soft. Above average for sure. Was not a big fan of the strawberry sauce with them though. Salad bar is a nice touch even though it had a limited selection. All in all the 45+ drive for me is to long for me to probably ever go back considering the food was average.

For me, zen takes the form of sitting behind a beautiful prepared steak dinner; I try to build-up a bank of cravings before I unleash my red-meat hunger at a steakhouse of my choosing. But if I had my way, I'd head west to the Beef House in Covington. Every time. What I like about the Beef House is that it doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. You won't find fashionable dinner jackets or a maître d' with a funny accent. No no, they fully embrace that down-home Indiana tradition of culinary hospitality. It's not pretentious and there's no dress code, but that also doesn't grant you free reign to wear your favorite pro football jersey, either. Don't be a meatball, this is a steakhouse, people. The steaks are of excellent cut and proportion and are very well prepared for whatever your taste is. The price is what you would expect from a local, home-grown steakhouse - with drinks, be prepared for a decent sized bill. Since it's a rare treat, I don't get to bent out of shape when putting my money where my mouth is. Literally. My favorite menu option is the Jack Daniels New York Strip, medium-rare; an excellent serving of steak, marinated in a smokey-oakey-whiskey flavor that compliments the steak so well. Pair that with helping of steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes, and you sir/ma'am, have a great meal ahead of you. Also noteworthy: the dinner rolls are exceptional with accompanied apple butter and/or berry preserves. They are delicious, so fight the good fight and resist the temptations to gorge yourself. You don't want to ruin your dinner, do you? What makes this place special is with any steak dinner option on the menu, you also receive that 'Back Home in Indiana' warm and fuzzy feeling, complimentary. Yeah sure, there are fancier, more pretentious places to go for an overpriced cut of beef, but I feel at ease when I'm at the Beef House. I like that.

Stopped at The Beef House on our way back to Champaign the other day and got an order to go. I tried the bbq chicken and it was pretty tasty. My husband tried the pork chops and said they were a little dry. The salad and sides were good but nothing special. Overall a good meal but pretty pricey.

A couple great local beers, and the usual cheap beers on menu. The food is awesome! I'm having the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich this time.

Rolls are warm and delicious. The salad bar is pretty good. The steak was juicy and tender but lacked flavor. I enjoyed my potato and my sons cod better than my steak. The decor is definitely 80's and needs an update.

Am I missing something?! I have visited Beef House twice (admittedly both times at lunch) and have not been impressed either time. The rolls are tasty and delicious with the strawberry jam, but as noted by other reviewers they are a little doughy in the middle. The salad bar is sub-par and at $9 is way over-priced for an 8" plate. There are no tomatoes, no eggs, no vegetable variety... it's basically iceberg lettuce, onions, shredded carrots, croutons, and some mayonnaise-based salads. The cooked lunch meals aren't much better.

My favorite steak place in Indiana. Keep your expensive steakhouse for this down to earth good food. Fantastic salad bar and perfect desserts. The service could not have been more attentive or friendly. The ambience and surroundings make for a pleasant meal. The steak was beyond belief. Fresh, cooked and seasoned perfectly. I overheard a couple tell the server they drove several hours from Illinois to get there--well, it was well worth the trip from Indy.

Was here for my rehearsal dinner with a large group. Had been here once a long time ago. Service was ok, waitress avoided us as much a possible. Rolls were good soup was good. Now the bad. Salad bar was so dang small and not much to choose from at all. My high school had a better salad bar than this place. I ordered the 20oz T- bone. From everything id heard about this place the steaks were amazing. Steak was cooked well done. Ordered is medium rare. When I asked what happened she said the "cooks are very busy sorry". WTF. The steak I found out is not seasoned at all not even salt and pepper yet they still charge $35 for is and one side. This place is over rated. They are lucky to be the only steak house in that area. Take the time to travel to Champaign I'll or Indy to get a great stark for your money. And don't always believe the hype.

We stopped here on the way from Indianapolis to Springfield, IL for the weekend, on a Friday night at about peak dinner time (7pm). We'd been here 20 years before for a large group function, but had never eaten in the dining room itself. Overall, everything was great. We were seated immediately and were asked our choice of a table in the middle of the room or along the wall (we opted for along the wall), and our server was at our table in just a couple minutes and was great about checking back regularly. I had a glass of white zin and my husband tried something from their fairly large selection of bottled beers. Our dinners (he had a large ribeye and I had the king crab/small filet combo) also came with soup, salad bar, and one side. The salad bar is good -- Several prepared salads (potato, slaw, macaroni, etc.), some fresh veggies like carrots, mushrooms, cucumber slices, beets, mixed lettuce (nicely cut into bite-sized pieces, a big plus for me), wonderful garlic croutons, a couple cheeses and crunchy toppings, and many fresh dressing choices. We had three options for soup -- Beef vegetable, broccoli cheese, and corn chowder. We both opted for corn chowder, and it was delicious. We ordered our steaks medium rare, and they were just right. My only complaint, and the only reason they didn't get five stars, was that the steaks were a little bland. Just a little bit of salt fixed mine, and my husband used their self-branded steak sauce to zip his up. My king crab legs were pretty good -- only choice cuts (no claws or forearms), in the form of two large legs. And, harkening back to a time gone by, the drawn butter was nicely served in a candle-heated warmer. I've only seen that one other time in recent years, and really miss that! We skipped dessert because we were more than full with the ample portions. We've already talked about taking our kids (both college students) back there with us sometime when they're home from school. Would I recommend the restaurant? Definitely. Would I make a trip from Indianapolis just to eat there? Maybe, if I wanted a change of pace, but not because it offers something I can't get at home.

Ribeye steak , okay but nothing to write home about. People rave for the dinner rolls tonight mine were doughy and cold. Service was excellent. For the price I doubt if will drive the 50 miles. I know people say how great, frankly I don't see it. Better than McDonald's though.

This was good food at a good price and very conveniently located for highway travelers. The hand made onion rings were thin cut (more like shoe strings) and they were nice and crunchy without being very greasy at all.

This is a good steak restaurant, but, is not the best in Indiana (as they advertise). Got there at 8 PM on a Saturday night and was seated immediately. Looked like a war zone with empty tables needing to be bussed. The wooden chairs are uncomfortable because the force you to lean backwards. Turns out the wait staff gets to eat their dinner at the same time because they were at the table next us with no extra charge for the gossiping. I had the ribeye steak which was good. The salad bar was basic, but, good quality. The tap water tasted badly. Our waitress did a good job even while eating her own dinner (they are open until 10 PM).

They really should call themselves the Bread Hose. The bread is amazing. Rolls and buns are 5star all the way. The beef speaks for itself. Great cuts of meat that has no added marinade or spices. If you like that go for it. I like some added falvor to enhance the beef. The salad bar and soup are amazing. I found myself smacking my lips on the sides and bread and nodding in agreement on the cut of meat. But a cut of meat prepared with minimum involvement, is not as aspiring as the flavors surrounding it. I think that is what they are and that is ok. But with the price I don't think it was quite worth it. The serving was good. Host greeted us and sent us to our table. The server got to us roughly 8 minutes later, but was crisp the rest of the ight. Without skipping a beat she was filling half-empty cups and bringing more bread. All in all I would go again, but I would not go out of my way. And I most likely won't get steak. I went for lunch once and it was more reasonable.

A little tough to find coming off the highway especially since the map is off by about 1/2 a mile! The Beef House in it self is very interesting stop to say the least delightful decor and a very clean establishment, there is even colorful giraffe in the parking lot in which families line up for the opportunity for fun photo opp. Walking in the front door one would expect to enter inside the restaurant, this is not so.... after a bit of an indoor walk (I am not sure why that is) You will find your self looking at the daily specials. Now that the mini maze is over, you will discover the ordering system is odd as well especially if it is your 1st time. They offer two dining options a menu and cafeteria style lunch line. Both are pretty pricy however the menu prices were considerably higher and being that we had a small appetite we went with the cafeteria line. This is were it gets odd... We walk in and eventually found a hostess. Then we were greeted by a waitress, we asked her about the cafeteria option in great detail to make sure we adhered to their unwritten rules. You then go to the line pick out your food, another server walks up after you sit down and she charges you by what she sees at the table!? I am not sure what we did wrong however we were charged extra for taking something we shouldn't of I guess what it was exactly was never explained. I did question charge however didn't dispute it, as I had no idea what was going on and they didn't seem to have a handle on the situation either. I marked it up to poor communication and service never finding a clear answer I just tipped less and it evened out. I really liked the style and feel of The Beef House I just do not understand it and being waited on by five different staff members (hostess, waitress, cafeteria line, waitress, cashier) it would be nice if they were all on the same page. If you are traveling on a budget you may want to pass this one by, if you have cash to spend and do not mind confusing menus have at it.

It's just ok... Being named "THE BEEF HOUSE", one would imagine that their steaks would be amazing. Unfortunately they fell short. The rolls are delicious and the salad bar good. We also ordered the mushroom appetizers and that was good as well. Plenty of food and I left stuffed! Next time though I may stick with salad bar, soup and appetizer. Steak not worth it. I had the FILET MIGNON

I think this place is WAY over-rated. The prices are far higher than the going rate at similar restaurants. I honestly don't see how it stays so busy. We live in Champaign so have other options that are better and closer....maybe this area of Indiana has nothing else? The rolls had good flavor but were doughy in the middle. I asked the waitress if we could get different ones and she said "that's how they usually make them." Really? Cuz I don't enjoy eating raw dough. I was also very under-whelmed by the salad bar. For such a large building and so many tables I expected a good sized spread of choices. Just the standard salad fare and not even all that you might usually see. The plates are tiny, too. I gather they are hoping you don't go bother to go back for seconds. I am seriously baffled by the hype about this place. I guess if you want to spend $25 on a steak and salad then this is the place for you.

First off: their website is beefhouserolls.com which I find hilarious. My mom geeks out over these warm yeast rolls, and I totally understand why. My fiance and I have stopped in here a few times, and I usually have a good experience. I will say that the service here is not as good as I would like it to be. Maybe I always get stuck with the "bad" waitress or something, but I always find myself watching another waitress being super friendly to the table across the aisle from me and being a little jealous. We started off with some wine. This place has a pretty decent wine menu with some inexpensive by the glass options. I don't think my white wine was served chilled to the proper temp, so it was a little off for me. The last time I was here I ordered the filet mignon and it was perfectly cooked. Very tender and juicy. On top of the steak and side (I went with rice, but probably would not do that again as it seemed like it came from a box) you get a salad bar (average salad bar with the iceburg chunk lettuce), choice of coup and yummy rolls. The rolls are served with butter, apple butter and preserves. I found myself being satisfied with the salad, soup (broccoli cheese yummm) and rolls!

The Beef House is about an hour and a half drive from Indianapolis. I have made this trek several times to eat at the Beef House. I personally think that the main attraction here is the salad bar and the delicious yeast rolls. They have numerous toppings, veggies and dressings for your salad and I bet you can't eat just one roll! As for their beef... I have not been that impressed. I have had the filet mignon wrapped in bacon and the 8 oz. ribeye. Both times I thought that the steaks could have used some sort of seasoning. They were very bland. I hate A1 sauce and have had to use it on both cuts of steak. I have also had the BBQ chicken and that was just your typical chicken breast. For the price, you get a TON of food. If you order an entree you get soup, the salad bar, endless rolls, your entree and one side. You really feel like a stuffed pig when you leave here. If you are on any sort of diet, I would suggest just getting the salad bar! It is a great place to have a family meal or some sort of gathering, but don't go in expecting to be blown away by their namesake...the beef.

This probably was our sixth trip here. First the good. The steak was as good as ever. With the salad bar, soup, hot yeast rolls, choice of vegetable and drink, there is hardly room for the steak. We got the smallest ribeye and there was plenty left over. My younger son who believes God placed cows on this earth for the sole purpose of making hamburger--got the Chicken Parmigiana. Always a risky move, going to a restaurant named THE BEEF HOUSE and ordering anything NOT beef, he gave the dish two thumbs up. I'm still not sure who sired this kid for while my tastes gravitate towards anything that MOOS, this kid has but one beef indulgence--hamburger. Or as he likes to say, "There is hamburger and then there is other meat." The steaks were perfectly cooked and tender. The yeast rolls were excellent and the homemade apple butter and strawberry jam good as usual. Also a good thing is they take reservations now. Now the bad. Prices were high. For a place out in the boonies, two dollars per ounce of steak wasn't exorbitant but was on the high end. Perhaps that is why there were empty tables on a Saturday at 7 pm. Even with reservations the restaurant check in process is confusing as ever. It's always been that way so I expect it will never change but having someone come in and redesign people flow sure would be useful. Of course having people block the only way into the restaurant so that each person in their group can get a digital memory didn't exactly help getting into the restaurant either. As much time as they spent remodeling the restaurant's bathrooms, I have to admit I was expecting something nice. What it appears they did instead was combine the men's and women's bathroom making it all men with four sit downs and one stand up. Boy was it dirty. The guys side was just gross so much so we ended up at the Wendy's across the street. Plus it was a good reason to get a Frosty. My wife said the girls side was out of toilet paper. They need someone whose job it is to check and clean the bathrooms in that busy place at least hourly. Soap would have been a nice touch as well. The water really tastes bad. It is well water at its worse. They could get a commercial water processing unit in there that would improve things tremendously. Again though, I expect it has always been that way and always will. The parking lot, while huge, is not completely painted as to where to park. I thought I would be nice and go get the car to pick my dear wife up at the entrance. Wrong. I drove down the aisle to find my way blocked by parked cars. There were no painted lane markings so I guess these people just thought it was their lucky day in finding an open area right up front in which to park. In reflecting on the bads, maybe these are a part of the reason it wasn't as busy and there were no tour buses out in the parking lot.

Very good just not great. 4 stars for the salad bar, rolls, portobello fries, and soup. Steak is about 3 and 1/2 stars for me...

My husband and I were passing through IN. Haven't eaten the whole day and glad that I remembered the Beef House from 2001 when I first came here. Their rolls, ribeye & salad bar are the bomb! there's just something about good ol' fashion beef that's cooked Southern style. Our waitress was very friendly. Service was friendly & food came promptly. Salad & rolls (eat-all-you-can) filled me up before the beef came & oh even the soup was included in the price. We ordered a 10 oz ribeye and with drinks our meal came to $50 (with taxes) for both. Our waitress even gave us a box of rolls to go when we asked for more. Lol! of course we gave her a big tip!

We stopped into the beef house driving from Indianapolis to Champaign. Several years ago, I had holiday party for work here and I remembered the horseradish was excellent. That's a funny thing to remember, isn't it? For the casual vibe, the prices are a little less relaxed. $8 for a salad bar? I guess if people actually go back for second helpings, that's fine. But as an add-on with a meal, I thought that was sorta steep. This is a down-home Indiana type of a place--I remembered it for its rolls and horseradish, not its beef, so I opted out of the steaks or beef. The prices are just too high for the vibe. If you opt for the sandwiches, though, you're in for a treat. Well, sort of. It would be nice if the sandwiches were served with something. Everything is extra, and the sandwiches alone are $8-$10. Consequently, I decided to carbo-load and overindulge in the rolls. 1.5 rolls and a sandwich later, I was pretty full and satisfied. We ordered the fish sandwich and the pork tenderloin, and we weren't disappointed in either. If I come back, I'll do it the same way. I think you can skip the beef, despite it being the namesake. It sorta feels like you're at a home for senior citizens; if that's your thing, then you'll be happy with a meal here.

Nothing says a hunk-o-meat comin' your way like the name Beef House! Last year, on my visit to the boyfriend's family in Indiana, his dad had some strawberry jam that they had gotten from the Beef House from a work convention. Everyone kept telling me how good their rolls were and how you get spoiled by the salad bar. I vowed that next year, I'd be able to get the chance to go. Lo and behold, here we are. Last week on Wednesday, we were able to make our way out to Covington from the Kentland/Goodland area. I was pretty eager to get in, seated, and to begin my assessment of the salad bar. They had a good lunch crowd and we were seated in a side room. It took a while for the waitress to greet us and get our orders. We ordered off the dinner menu because we don't mess around with a name like the Beef House! I got a filet mignon and the bf got a ribeye. Within about 10 minutes, they brought fresh strawberry jam and their rolls. They also have apple butter at the tables. Those rolls are like pillows of heaven! They're soft and light like little clouds and when you tear them apart to butter them, a little puff of steam comes out so you know they're fresh baked! I decided I liked mine better with the apple butter. The strawberry jam is practically strawberry syrup with some chunks of strawberries in it! Good but nothing can beat a good and well rounded apple butter! Oh, I got to find a way to re-create those yeast rolls! The salad bar is pretty well equipped. The croutons, I suspect, are deep fried nuggets of their uneaten rolls. Either way, they're pretty crisp in a non teeth-crushing way, which I appreciate. The salad is fresh lettuce with various toppings and pastas. I had one plate of salad and enjoyed the heck out of those rolls when the meat came! I got mushrooms with mine and my boyfriend got the mashed potatoes. Mushrooms were whole, buttery, and garlicky! I liked mine and the mashed potatoes were buttery and creamy. The meat...left a lot to be desired. It didn't have a good sear on it first of all, and despite my filet being wrapped in bacon, the meat itself was flavorless! I suspect that it had been frozen at some point because there was a copious amount of residual fluid that was clear (for my medium steak). A fresh cut of meat shouldn't have that much fluid coming out of it, nor should it be as bland as it was. I was disappointed. If you can't even honor your own namesake then...what are you doing? This place should be called Bread Heaven or the Roll House!

I spent last summer in Cayuga for a construction internship. I would often stop by Beef House on the way back to the hotel. It has a great balance between cost, quality and atmosphere. It is a nice restaurant, but welcoming enough that I didn't feel too ashamed walking in wearing work clothes and covered in dust from head to toe. Some restaurants charge a fortune for a small portion of high quality. Some charge a fortune for average food in a fancy setting. Beef House has the fairest prices I have seen. I have found that it is hard to get a good meal for less than $20 and once you pass $30 you are probably paying for the atmosphere. At Beef House you get a large portion of Meat, soup, another side and access to one of the freshest salad bars I have seen. Typical price is between $18 and $25. I'm not one to make a fuss over dinner rolls, but the homemade croutons are very good. If you find yourself stranded in western Indiana/eastern Illinois head out to Beef House. You won't leave hungry or unhappy.

Well, we can check that off our list. The waitress provided less than average service. Okay, being honest...she clearly did not want to be there. Ordered hamburgers which were very good and the buns reminded us of Bub's Burger (in Carmel, IN) buns. Yeast rolls-excellent as always, but the overall experience was not worth the drive.

Avoid it... unless you just want rolls. Everyone who was with me agrees that they were the best thing there!

My husband and I were driving from WA to MD and stopped off at the Beef House for dinner one night when were were tired of eating fast food. It's right off the freeway, so is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. For some reason, there is a large painted giraffe outside the front entrance. The restaurant was not very busy and we were seated quickly. I ordered the petite filet mignon and my husband ordered fried chicken livers and frog legs. I got soup and the salad bar with my dinner. The salad bar is your typical steak house salad bar; nothing special. My husband ate my soup, which was corn chowder. Everyone mentions the rolls, which are huge and very good. We heard a number of patrons asking for the "famous" apple butter, but no one got it that night because they had been out of it for several days. My filet mignon was cooked properly, but the bacon wrapped around it was completely raw. It had very little flavor except for an odd chemical taste, surprising in a restaurant featuring beef. I also had a baked potato, which was swimming in butter; it looked like a ladle of melted butter had been poured on top. The cheese on top was another ladle full of gummy goo, which I scraped off. My husband's chicken livers were an enormous serving of food, encased in mounds of coating and deep fried too long, until they were almost black. The frog legs were also deep fried. He said neither was very good and didn't come close to finishing them. The service was great and our waitress was very nice and helpful, so I wanted to rate this place higher, but the food was so poor that I just can't. I would not eat here again.

My mom and i stopped in while we were driving by. Not a place I would drive the 2 hours to visit, but good enough to stop if you are driving by. Good beef, not sure how aged it was, but good. The apple butter and cherry preserves are both great. Good salads on the salad bar. Good soups. Everything was good.

I'll preface this review with the fact that I was a high-way traveler just passing through. There isn't a lot in the way of food choices along that stretch of 1-74, we had passed Champagin, IL too early to eat and indianapolis was too far. My father who I was traveling with insists on eating at a sit-down restaurant as a break from a long day of driving. There was literally nothing else around, so we decided to take a chance on this place. It was OK - I wouldn't drive out of my way to go here but if I was driving through that stretch again and needed to stop between bigger cities I might stop again. Specific comments - Place is HUGE, one of the biggest I've ever seen. You get a lot of food, most dinners come with soup, salad bar, a side/vegetable, your entree, rolls, and cofffee/tea or soda. A lot of the steaks and other entrees are $20-30 but you get a lot of food for that. That said, I wasn't overly impressed with anything. The soup was a little disappointing, not terrible but not impressive. Salad bar was pretty good, nothing to complain about there but also not huge or unusual. I got fish (weird for a steak house I know but I had just eaten steak a lot in the past few days) and it was pretty good. The baked potato side I got was a bit disappointing - I said yes to butter, cheese and sour cream but it wasn't good, some sort of weird butter sauce and way too much of it. Now that's not the worse issue but my companions fries and onion rings were also disappointing so maybe they need to work on sides a bit. But overall we were happy we stopped there, it was interesting to try something local and it is clearly being patronized by the locals as it's way too big to be just interstate traffic. I wouldn't drive way far out of my way for it though.

we have eaten at the beef house a few times, perhaps four times in the last two years. it is almost two hours from our home, and we make a special trip to go there. our first two or three times was off the chart good....5 stars +. our last visit, 4/11/15 was off quite a bit from the norm. our wait was short...got right to a table, and they were busy, but didn't seem overwhelmed. there were empty tables here and there. our server was hurried, like she had better things to do. she wasn't rude, but wasn't very friendly either. she never introduced herself, so we will call her "the server with the medium length blonde hair. our appetizer came about as expected, with the expected wait...the rolls arrived like they should, but they claimed the whole grain rolls were "just being put in the oven". i have to tell you, half the reason i go there, is those whole grain rolls. our meal took an exceptional amount of time, and my steak wasn't cooked as ordered. med well isn't red in the middle. if we have twenty staff cooking steaks, then they should know how to cook med well. sent the steak back to get it cooked right...and it was gone fifteen minutes....and came back all but burnt. live and learn. overall, i give them a 2 out of 5 this time. the server made a last-ditch attempt to salvage a poor attempt at service buy offering us a "free piece of cheesecake" for our trouble. i call that a desperate attempt at a tip. we never did get the whole grain rolls. in my mind, if i am gonna drop $80 for two plates of food...the food...and the service should be EXCEPTIONAL....not MEDIOCRE. seems they have begun to rest on their reputation and haven't kept their standards up. OVERRATED.

A LANDMARK! The Beef House offers one of Indiana's top salad bars and delicious steaks for reasonable prices. If you're travelling on I-74 near the Indiana-Illinois line, set aside an hour for a great meal at this family owned-and-operated institution. The same goes for anyone venturing north or south on State Road 63 between north of Terre Haute. It's a nice, but casual place with quick, friendly service. It's better than the chains and more healthy than the drive-through windows. Let's face it, a privately owned place doesn't get this big (seats hundreds) and last this long (decades) without attracting and keeping customers with good food, good service and good prices.

This place is deff. worth the money! You get a lot of food for what you pay. It's amazing! We come here at least once a year, it's by far our favorite steakhouse in Indiana.

Beef House has become a pre-Indy Saturday night tradition for my son and I and this year was no exception. You get a fairly good steak for a fair price without the stuffiness that so many good steakhouses seem to have. As so many people mention, the salad bar is crazy good, the rolls are to die for and I have to say the soup (while in a smallish cup) is worth it. I had the Vegetable Beef which was good (excellent beef stock, not really surprising at a place called the Beef House) any my son had the Cream Of Broccoli which he really enjoyed. The staff is friendly and you kind of get a strong family, small town feel. If you are looking for (or expecting) a Ruth Chris/Morton's type experience I would suggest going someplace else. The are not Morton's and don't seem to want to be. But for surprisingly good steak at an exit of the expressway and better than the Outback (I actually like Outback but Beef House is better) , it can't be beat. One other comment, some of the comments about the bathrooms (at least the men's) are right on target. They need to spend more time cleaning them and do something about the product labels that I think were stuck on the stall walls to cover graffiti...

If this is the best steak in Indiana, if feel bad for the people that live there. I had the 12 Oz rib eye. I will admit that it was a good cut of meat, and it was cooked properly. My problem is it was bland. A little salt and pepper before cooking would've made all the difference in the world. Most items seemed over priced. The order of the items on the salad bar seemed odd. Croutons right after the lettuce? I did really like the Croutons. The place was busy. That may have been why service was painfully slow.

The Beef House is always marvelous. They raise their own cattle for the meat. They use two tons of flour for dinner yeat-rolls that are to-die-for. Their apple-butter, strawberry jam for the rolls is home made as well and out of this world. There's nothing bad about the Beef House. I think, while my group was here, I took pictures of some of the marvelous looking food of a salad, yeast rolls, an a massive T-Bone steak. A good place with good friendly people with great food. You'll pay a little more for it .. well worth if if you can afford it.

My father-in-law got my wife and I a gift card to The Beef House for her birthday back in May... and we just now got around to using it tonight. In summary, I'll say this -- it wasn't that terrible, but I'm glad we weren't the ones who paid for this meal. Suffice to say, the experience was pretty average. And for an $80+ bill, I'd really expect more than that from an "award winning" steakhouse. (FYI -- a display case in the entryway revealed the award.... "Best Steak House in Indiana" -- Midwest Living Magazine; 1988) The lowdown: After driving about an hour to get there, we were seated in what I think was the overflow section. We saw the main dining area when we came in and it was pretty full. No surprise, really, for ten 'til 7 on a Saturday night. (It's a surprise I saw that at all with the deli-style case of meat on display as you walk in.) So we were seated and our server came over almost immediately with water and asked for a drink order. So far so good. We took a minute to peruse the extensive wine list (a plus) and my wife selected an Indiana Riesling ... which took 10+ minutes to show up. 'Okay, they're busy -- no problem' I thought. Our poor server mentioned this several times throughout the evening as... 1. I had to ask for every refill (except my last) 2. He forgot to bring our soup (until the meal was over) 3. He forgot to charge us for anything but our food (which we corrected for him) That aside, I felt bad for the kid. Obviously overwhelmed. But I digress -- back to the restaurant. The room we were in featured a large number of lengthy tables surrounded by hungry carnivores... maybe 200 people. The whole place had a sort of "lodge-like" feel, but with a bit of rustic, midwestern charm here and there. Not bad. So, despite the fact that our meals came with rolls (quite good), soup (never came) and a salad bar (pretty good... the dressings were very good) -- I elected to try the shrimp cocktail to start. As was the theme of the evening... average. The shrimp was decently sized and the presentation was pretty nice, but the cocktail sauce left a lot to be desired, the shrimp was a little chewy ... and it didn't come with any lemon (pretty standard, IMO). I wouldn't order it again. For the main course I went with the standard Filet (bacon wrapped... you've already got my attention) and my wife ordered the petite version (more bacon for me). What was more hilarious is that each meal came with something from the "vegetable" section. What was on the vegetable section you ask? All sorts of American "vegetables" like french fries, baked potatoes, onion rings, broccoli w/ cheese sauce, rice, mushrooms sauteed in butter and mashed potatoes with gravy. EPIC list of veggies there. lol So the steaks finally came out and while adequately sized and a nice cut, mine was just a little past medium rare and my wife's was well past the medium she ordered. Whatever... we went with it. More disappointing than the meat being overcooked however was its general lack of flavor. I'm not joking at all when I say that my wife looked at me and said that she enjoyed the flavor of sirloin kabobs she'd had at Texas Roadhouse the night before better. And I could only agree. Without the bacon, I'm pretty sure I would've had to resort to dousing my steak in whatever kind of "Bob's all-purpose sauce" they had on the table to get any flavor out of it. Sorry to say it, but I honestly feel like this place needs to be re-evaluated as "Indiana's Best Steak House." 1988 was a LONG time ago and we've had far better experiences elsewhere. (St. Elmo's anyone?) I doubt we'll be going back (on our dime) anytime soon.

Great food, fast service... HUGE selection of food. Weather you like seafood, steaks, chicken, pork, or if you're a vegitarian... this is your kind of place. The rolls are one of my favorite things here. They come out when you get there and we always take like 4 dozen home. We will go out of our way to eat here, but it's usually when we are on a road trip out that way. The bathrooms could use a little TLC...

After reading soooo many good reviews, we decided to try it. Well, yes, it was busy but service was poor to non-existent. Food came out barely warm - items were forgotten and the lobster was so tough - I swear it must have walked from Maine. It was a long drive to get here and for the money and time....a big disappointment. Would expound on the meal but indigestion will set in.

I grew up going to the Beef House. It was always a highlight. I still love the lunch specials, the rolls and the friendly service. However the last two times that we went our steaks were horrible. My husband had ordered medium rare and one half was raw and the other side was almost well-done. My medium rare was almost inedible as well, and the frog legs tasted bland. When we returned the steak the replacement was also overcooked. It was a very busy Saturday night so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, the when I went on a quiet Thursday the next time, the steak was under-seasoned and the broccoli was mush. My family will no longer come with me to the restaurant.

The rolls are great but honestly that was the only really good part of the meal. For the price I paid it I expected better. My wife and I ordered our steaks medium, they were on the verge of being well done and bland. I remember the beef house being excellent but anymore its just another steak joint. I will save my money elsewhere and my time driving there.

Best: The warm soft rolls and yummy jam. I went with my boyfriend one weekend and the atmosphere looks like it's a high-class lodge. We actually just got the salad bar buffet and we were stuffed. I don't doubt the meat is beyond description, but we saved some money and were VERY content with the salad bar offerings. I plan to go again...and again...

The quality of food here is incredible. While it is on the expensive side, you won't be disappointed! The steaks are absolutely amazing and fresh. The salad bar is really good as well. Literally the biggest bowl of bacon I've ever seen in my life at the salad bar. All in all, I'd highly recommend this place to anyone with a not so stiff budget and a taste for high quality food.

They have the best beef in the midwest here!! I have been here three times while going to the University of Illinois. (It's about 45 minutes away from U of I -Champaign Urbana.) I always get the ribeye either a 10 oz or 8 oz. The ribeye is the best. It is always cooked perfectly, and to those that complain that it is not, as a customer you can talk to your waitress or waiter and have it sent back to the kitchen, and you shouldn't feel bad because they always ask, "Is is cooked properly?" So at dinner, for $24.. I get a ribeye, soup, salad bar, baked potato, and rolls. They even have a meat counter, for you to order steaks from and take home.

I am a fan of the cafeteria-style lunch special, which is a ton of good-quality food, salad bar, drink, and roll for less than $12. I feel like the steaks are overpriced, even for city standards, and this restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. I have never eaten here for dinner and likely never will because I can get a prime steak in Indy and cook it myself for much less than they're charging here for choice. Also...l don't live out in the sticks. For my 2 Beef House lunch experiences, I had roast beef and chicken-fried steak. How the lunch service works is you enter and a hostess seats you, then you place your drink order and let the waitress know if you want to order off the menu or head up to the food line. There are chilled plates for step 1, the salad bar, and after that go back for step 2. Tell the people behind the bar which entree and sides you want and they'll hand them to you. It's not technically "all you can eat," but it's more than most people should eat. The roast beef was full of flavor, juicy, and good, but it wasn't quite as tender as I expected it to be. The mushroom gravy that topped it was tasty. The waitress we had that day never brought us jam or apple butter for the rolls and never refilled our drinks. She walked by and around our table many times without so much as looking our way. My second experience I had MUCH better and friendlier service. The rolls, apple butter, and strawberry sauce (very thin jam) came out quickly, and it was all so good that I ate a roll with apple butter for my dessert! Our waitress kept our drinks full, thankfully, because I was really thirsty. The chicken fried steak was awesome. It was crisp, nicely flavored, and had a great texture. It's probably the best CFS I've had...I only wish there'd been a choice of white gravy to go with it. The mashed potatoes were fine but definitely needed the gravy to add flavor. My second side was green beans. They weren't mushy and tasted good. I really enjoyed the pasta salad and bean salad from the salad bar at lunch. The lunch salad bar has a good selection of "goodies" (like beets and peas) to put on your lettuce salad, as well as 4-6 different cold sides (chick peas, 3-bean salad, pasta salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, etc.) As we were leaving, I saw the GIANT bowls of bacon bits and cheese coming out onto the salad bar for dinner...I think those replace some of the cold sides. This is "THE PLACE" to go for a steak dinner if you are in Danville, IL or Covington, IN. It's very old school. I think Ron, from the TV show Parks and Rec, would really enjoy this place. It's also easy to get to as it's right off I-74. The restaurant is huge, and honestly, I wonder how far people drive to fill this place up. Each time I've been here (1:30pm and 3pm) the place appeared to be half full or better.

So this place is out in "the middle of nowhere." It's about 45 min from my folks' place so we don't go there often. If you're passing through, you should definitely make the stop. Their steak dinners include soup, salad bar, vegetable, rolls, and a drink. The steaks are pretty good. The rolls are absolutely amazing. Kids will order a bunch of them from the Beef House and then sell them for fundraisers- the Beef House has a whole fundraiser program. Getting them warm in the restaurant with their strawberry jam is great. It's a big place with plenty of parking. Never had any issues with service.

If you're reading this and you live in Champaign, IL, then please know that this is THE ONLY "upscale restaurant" that Champaign has to offer. It's 45 minutes east of Champaign just across the IL/IN border..... make reservations.... do your EST time conversion and head on over for some of the best beef you'll ever have (mind you, in Champaign). Every meal comes with a trip to the salad bar, choice of soup, and all the YUMMY rolls you can eat. Their strawberry jam is soooo good and my husband is in love with their apple butter. Everything there is VERY good -- their sides (like their onion rings) are lightly fried to perfection... and their beef is very good. They also have seafood selections and chicken selections as well. I've had their scallops and you get so many that you'd think that they made a mistake. If you're looking for a good place for an anniversary/birthday/graduation dinner....then go here. It's about $25 per meal (if you have a toddler, they don't mind them eating off of your plate, because there's no way that they'll finish their own meal... but they do have really good chicken tenders when your kid gets big enough for their own meal.) but it is well worth the money and drive if you're looking for a good upscale restaurant in Chambana.

Was here last night for the first time. We drove from Indy to meet up with friends who recommended this place. Love the atmosphere. The salad bar was delicious. The dinner rolls were to die for. Love the apple butter. I got a 10 oz rib eye and ordered it medium rare. The only thing is that the steak did not have any seasoning. I had to add salt and pepper to eat what I can eat. The ribeye was tough. Overall, the whole experience was good. I am assuming this might be a bad night for the chef cooking the steaks. I will definitely give this place a second chance. Maybe on a different night.

What isn't to like. The outstanding rolls are served warm with apple butter and we also had a side order of strawberry preservers. The salad bar was fresh and had numerous toppings to choose from. They also offered potato salad, pea salad, beets and several other cold salad options. I had the rib eye that was good but needed a little seasoning and a baked potato while my husband had Swiss steak and mashed potatoes. Needless to say, we took about half of our meal home because there was too much to choose from. Also, the meal includes drinks and desserts - which we brought home, too. The food is reasonably priced and the service was great. It took us about an hour and a half to get to the restaurant and it was worth the drive.

This place is fantastic!! We drive a good hour and a half to get here at least once a year when we go to Illinois to visit family. The steaks are usually cooked to perfection. The rolls are DELICIOUS! And I love the selection on the salad bar. I'm kind of shocked people complain about the price. For around $50 total (maybe a bit more) my husband and I each get a drink, soup, salad, steak with sides, and all the rolls we can eat. I'd say that's pretty good considering it's a steakhouse! Everywhere around us is at least that much just for 1 meal...let alone 2! The last time we went we fed 5 people for $160...not bad at all. I look forward to our next trip there!

FINALLY, FINALLY got to eat here. I have heard for years about this place. I know people who make three hour trips just to eat here. Got the chance to recently on our way to Lexington, KY. It was Friday lunchtime. VERY VERY disappointed!! It was buffet, and you were served the amount THEY wanted to give you. The food was dried out and bland at best. Don't even think you could go back for seconds, not that I would have. I got the roast beef with au jus. Yuck. Gross even. Mashed potatoes tasted boxed. Green beans were the most edible part. The famous rolls?? Please. Just shaped differently than every other dinner roll at any standard restaurant. And WAY WAY overpriced for the choices and quality. Salad buffet was below standard as well. Couldn't figure out for the life of me what everyone has raved about!! Never again.

If you were alive in the 70s, and old enough to remember it, you probably went to a place like Beef House with your family. This isn't a "high end steak house" ala Ruth Chris or similar. It's a down-home, 60s/70s style steak house where families go to dine on salads and meat slabs and chat about life. If you go with that in mind, you'll enjoy it. Walking in, you'll notice dark wood tables and chairs. There's a huge salad bar that you can go back to as many times as you like, and it's got every kind of dressing and salad topping you could want. The place is known for their rolls, oddly. They're good, and they'll keep bringing more and more as you eat them. But when we go to Beef House, we want steak. (Or Liver-n-onions!) You can get about any steak cut you'd like, most of them in a couple different weights. And of course, they'll cook your steak any way you like. The sear they get on their steaks is very good - they've got a very hot grill. And a good sear is about all the cooking I like done to a steak - thankfully Beef House is quite willing to prepare a steak that way. They have rumaki, aka chicken livers wrapped with bacon, as an appetizer, and it's very, very well executed. Tasty. Nice and crisp bacon. Yum! Another good appetizer is the frog legs! A friend of ours recommended we try them, and so we did and were NOT disappointed! Yummy! They also offer Upland beers - a nice touch! We get to Beef House a couple times a year. It's worth the drive and we always enjoy it. If they served grass fed beef, this would be a 5-star review.

Salad bar is pretty good but their steak was pretty sad. I felt like I got ripped off paying over 20 dollars for a rib eye and it tasted like cafeteria food. The mashed potatoes were good. Overall this place should have prices more like Denny's for the quality of their food and atmosphere. Everything was delicious except for the steak it was flavorless, not seared well, and not uniformly cooked. Would not suggest this place.

Scallops were excellent . Which can be risky at a beef restaurant . Nice salad bar.

Stopped here for lunch while traveling from Indy to Peoria...definitely worth the stop. Great Midwestern comfort food, good service, great rolls, with apple butter, yum! I had the fried pork tenderloin, and it was delicious! And the derby pie...wow, mouth watering... It really is in the middle of nowhere, but I'll try to plan my trips so I'm passing through at lunch or dinner time from now on ;)

I give it 4 stars for overall visit. Steaks, my medium rare 12 oz strip and companion's medium rare 8 oz ribeye were perfectly prepared. All the fixins (that Texan for soup, salad bar, rolls, potatoes, strawberry jam and apple butter) were divine. Service was excellent with one small glitch (she brought wrong soup instead of broccoli cheese). My only problem was price. Owners call pricing "moderate". I call it a bit much for "choice" steaks. Pricing us about 90% of a comparable prime steak. Granted, Beef House includes everything in one price so that makes it better. I would definitely go back. This was my second trip and it was better than first. Its not often you find this quality in BFE!

Great service this afternoon. Just had s burger, broc-ched soup and fries. Burger was very good. Fries average and soup average. Salad bar looks great and the beef in the case is well- marbled. I will have a rib eye next time i go and i will update my rating.

People! This place is great! It'a classic decor with great portions and prices! Everyone in Indiana knows about this, but somehow it's one of the best kept secrets! I love walking in and seeing all of those steaks! The salad bar is good, with great homemade croutons and dressings. Try this out if you are in the area!

Below average, Nothing more. Way too hyped up for what they have to offer. Rolls tasted like they are from GFS, salad bar was decent, and steak was bland and disappointing. Will definitely not be returning to this establishment and would not recommend to anyone looking for a good steak.

When visiting friends of ours in Illinois, we always make a stop at Beef House. Its in the middle of no where, right off the interstate, about a little over an hour outside Indianapolis. It's always seems packed, but due to it's size, we've never waited over 15 minutes. Beef House is what I'd call an old school steak place. Your meal consists of a steak, visits to the huge fresh salad bar, rolls, and potato/veggie sides. As others have mentioned, the fresh strawberry jam and apple butter is awesome on their mega-fluffy rolls. They have steaks ranging from 4oz filets all the way to monster 20oz+ porterhouses. They also have various cuts of chicken and pork, as well as "clog your arteries" country cooking like chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, and country fried steak. ...and oh yeah, grab a piece of pie on the way out. We're talking old school Apple or Banana cream. They are delicious, and cap off a huge steak dinner nicely. I've never had any complaints about the food or service. It's nearly impossible to leave the place without feeling stuffed. Be warned though, it's pricey. Expect $30+, which in the city isn't bad for a good meal, but can be a shocker in the country.

Overhyped. You can't expect them to deliver 5 star food to that many tables at once, especially on a Sunday evening. Everything is average.

When I was a kid, my family would stop here on trips when we headed towards Indiana. For a long time, it was one of my very favorite restaurants in the world. The big, fluffy yeast rolls! The strawberry preserves! The hamburgers! The salad bar with real bacon bits and the best Ranch dressing in the world! So I'm admittedly nostalgic. I've been there lately, too, and how does it compare? Pretty well overall. But my main advice - and this will sound like heresy to some - is: get the fried chicken. Now, I know, it is called the Beef House and beef if their thing. But I have been a little disappointed on occasions with the beef. The prime rib was a bit more dry than I like it and the hamburgers, too. But I have never been disappointed with the fried chicken. I think it is the best in Indiana, which is a state that really knows its fried chicken. The outside is absolutely crispy and crunchy. If you get the mashed potatoes as well (you should) there is chicken fat or butter or both incorporated into them - they are so rich and delicious they must be tasted to be believed. Since I am also a little more adventurous then when I was a kid, I also recommend the bacon-wrapped, fried chicken livers. Pure comfort food with a strong (but delicious) organ-y taste. When I ordered them, the server got kind of excited and said they were one of her favorites. I can see why. The other things are still good - the rolls, the strawberry preserves, the pie, and the salad bar remain strong. The beef is good - definitely solid - but not as amazing as I would have expected. The chicken is where it's really at, though. The place has a cool ambiance - sort of a large, barn like structure - and the service has always been good when I've been there. It isn't cheap but it's not outrageous either.

I dined here for lunch and tried the buffet. Salad bar was average with less than fresh lettuce. Rolls served at the table were amazing and seemingly unlimited. I had the ribs which were tender and fell off the bone. The remaining sides, e.g. green beans, corn, noodles, were very average. Not sure why people come from far and wide to eat here, but there's not a whole lot else around there to choose from.

Worth driving miles for dinner! Wonderful steaks, pork chops, salad bar, rolls to die for! Highly recommend as a "destination dinner" location.

Excellent lunch at the Beef House. It lived up to its reputation by far. Don't let the price intimidate you. The total bill will average out once you realize it includes drink, salad, entree, rolls, and soup.

Ok here's the deal with the Beef House. This restaurant is basically in the middle of nowhere (about 15 miles east of Danville and 100 west of Indy). The locals really do hype this place up to be something it really isn't. A fancy steakhouse in the middle of nowhere makes no sense. The prices are somewhat exorbitant for what you get here. Nevertheless, the food gets a solid 3 stars, the steaks are ok and the rolls are the best thing on the menu. If you're in the area, this place is an excellent choice because unfortunately there aren't many options in Danville. Honestly, this place would be on the level of a Ruby Tuesdays in a ma

It makes me sad to write this because this was one of the restaurants that it was a treat to go to. I normally don't write reviews for or against but since this was such a shocking fall from grace of this restaurant I felt I should warn others. First of all, walking into the place it has a strange stagnant odor. Also the table they sat us at was so close to the other tables. The dining room was overcrowded with empty tables. People were actually getting trapped between the tables as if in a maze. When the waiter finally did come out to our table (he really seemed as if he had no desire to be there or wait on us. The rolls were as good as i remember as was the apple butter. The famous strawberry jam was more like strawberry soup. When it was time for salad bar, they had the plates in a cooler that was not cold and the first plate I grabbed was really dirty. The lettuce had started turning brown as well and the pasta salad, potato salad, noodle salad and coleslaw seemed average and nothing special. The salad bar is itself a typical steakhouse salad bar. The soup that I got was ham and bean, but it was more like bean water then anything. There were little beans and only one fatty chunk of ham. Not to mention that it was barely warm. When the entree finally came out I was not impressed. The potato was tiny and had some sort of cheese/butter sauce on it that resembled Hollandaise sauce, it was not tasty. It also had about 3x the amount of sour cream that it needed. The steak...the "beef" that the famous Beef House is known for was just pathetic. First off, I have no idea why people are saying that prices here are reasonable? It seems ridiculous to me to pay $21 for an 8oz steak. Not only that but the steak was super thin. I asked for Medium-Rare and it came out Medium to Medium-Well but appeared that some one put steak blood/juice over it tom make it not look like that. The steak had no flavor, lots of fat and grizzel. Now I know that one of the "selling" points of this place is that they don't season their meat but a little salt and pepper is needed. I was so disappointed in the steak that I couldn't even finish it...especially when I bit done into a huge, hard chunk of grizzel. Overall this restaurant has fallen from the grace it once had. So sad as this used to be one of my favorite places.

I'm trying to be fair on this review, but keep in mind, I ended up with food poisoning after my visit here. The building is interesting, and my first impression was that this place could handle some large parties. Personally, I wasn't truly impressed with the decor and the tables were a little close to each other, however, it was a nice enough place. The menu was incredible. They had a wide variety of "stranger" items such as frog legs, chicken livers and the such. We got the frog legs, I got a steak and my wife got the chicken livers. She thought they were good, and I thought my food was average. Overall, interesting menu, average food, too expensive for the value. Still, there isn't much in the area in the way of competition, so if you have no other choice, not a bad stop. Just make sure they cook your steak well done. Medium rare just didn't make it.

Salad bar was pretty much just pasta salads and lettuce and fixings. The rolls before dinner come to your table warm and are wonderful. Meat lovers paradise here - wide variety of stakes and you can go as big as you can handle. Several friends told us this was a "must do" restaurant to hit when in the area. Glad we did,

This place has gone down hill since the last time I was there.. Many years ago ! The rolls are the only thing really outstanding. The meat was small and tasteless for what you paid for. The service was fair. The salad bar was a disappointment. If you are traveling on Interstate 74, travel a little farther and stop at Texas Roadhouse in Champaign, IL. The steak is to die for, get the Dallas fillet and the prices and service are fantastic...

went here with a very large group (about 30). I got the pasta primavera I'm not a big meat eater. I had low expectations as I recognized I'm at a "BEEF" house. but this dish did not even meet the low expectations. overcooked pasta with steamed veggies...yuck. no sauce or flavor. i ate one noodle. why even put it on the menu if you're not going to at least attempt to make it edible. my husband got a steak which he asked for medium rare he got it well done. sent it back. his second steak was medium well not pink at all. he didnt sent it back just suffered silently. I dont understand how a place that "specializes" in beef cant cook a cut of beef right. and for these downtown chicago prices....forget it. i think this place would be out of business if there was anywhere else to eat!!!

Steak was ordered medium however it was cooked to medium well. Otherwise I would give this place 4 stars. 12oz new York strip was $32 but it came with salad bar, soup, ice tea, and homemade rolls. Not a bad deal at all.

Having dined there several time is the past five years, I was anxious to take my son there when we passed through Covington on a recent business trip. I really played the place up. And I was sadly disappointed. First, the young person serving us, although a very nice young gentleman, was terrible at service. He brought rolls out, but we have to ask repeatedly for the apple butter and the jam. We also had to ask repeatedly for water. Our steaks great for size and presentation, but were overcooked. I never did receive my mushrooms. I will probably be there again, as one bad experience does not negate several good ones. At the same time, I will not talk them up again, rather, I will let my companions form their own opinion with no preconceived expectations.

This is the best steak house in Indiana. It is in "BFE", but the drive is worth it. I stop here on every trip down Highway 63. The salad bar is awesome. The veggies are fresh and there are 10+ dressing to choose from. The broccoli-cheddar soup has chunks of broccoli in it, much better than any puree. My family loved the vegetable-beef as well. The best deal in Indiana is the Cheeseburger, Salad Bar, and Soup for $11. The burgers are better than any restaurant I have ever been to. Every meals comes with rolls, and they are awesome! My in-laws buy uncooked rolls and cook them for holidays.

The Beef House is a sprawling complex off of I-74 with a huge parking lot, and an adjacent events center for wedding receptions and the like. In the Summer it has pretty and nicely maintained flower gardens, and in the Winter pleasantly distracting Christmas decoration and animated Santas. It has beef every day of the year. And a big old-fashioned salad bar. Our family almost always got there in time for the Early Bird Specials:-), and I almost always ordered the tasty rib eye, which thank to The Beef House, is my favorite cut of meat. The Early Bird Specials offer smaller portions of meat, but basic sides are included. The big doughy rolls and homemade jam are satisfying, as is the cream of broccoli soup. There is a little more seafood on the menu than there used to be, but there's nothing that adventurous. The servers have mostly worked there for years, and are nice, friendly, and efficient. The wooden seats are surprisingly comfortable, so you could easily spend a long time here, but don't come here with your foodie goggles on. This is a place for chowhounds. Lunch buffet is nice, coffee is good, and breakfast is quiet and delicious. It has never been as popular, since this is a place most people drive some distance to, so when I used to eat breakfast here, I felt like I had this huge mansion to myself with my friendly servants there to fill me up with tasty omelettes and sausages.

Average. That's the best way for me to describe The Beef House. Perhaps it was all the hype that I heard about this place for years, but when I ate there, I was not that impressed. First, the rolls. When I told someone I was going to eat here, they literally screamed, "Oh wow! You've got to try the rolls!!!" So, I had a couple of rolls. They're good. I've had better, and I've had worse. The salad bar was above average. Then there was the steak. It was average. It was cooked well but not all that flavorful. Again; it was average. Maybe I was there on an off day, but someone who was in my party commented that our meals were typical of what they offer; he too is not very impressed with the place. It's a decent place, mind you, but when people seem willing to sell their first born children if it means being able to eat here, I'd expect it to be better.

Dinner for two was great. A HUGE meal! They kept bringing out more delicious warm rolls, warm apple butter, fantastic steaks, and then surprised us with sweet corn on the cob. Plus, the salad bar is great and the sides were awesome. It's quit a drive from civilization, so make the most of your trip. The wait to get in on a Wednesday night was pretty long, so make reservations.

The Beef House Restaurant is fantastic, and well deserving of five stars. Their banquet services, however, are horrible and deserve no stars, so I'm giving them 3 overall. The restaurant has wonderful food, great service and a really good salad bar. Meals come with the best rolls ever as well as homemade strawberry jam and apple butter. It's just about perfect, and I've been known to make the trip from Champaign on a whim when I get a craving for their yummy rolls. Their banquet hall bears no resemblance to the restaurant other than sharing a parking lot and serving the rolls. I went to a wedding reception here recently and it was a pretty long and miserable evening. Their service is horrible, the food is bland, and everything they served (even the salads) were some shade of beige. The lone exception being the strawberry preserves. No apple butter. The salads were pre-made, which isn't a big deal, but appeared to then have been frozen and thawed before serving, as all the lettuce was brown, limp, and slimy. It was inedible. The hall is long and narrow, so the sound and seating arrangements are both awful. There is not much of a dance floor. The servers kept taking our plates before we were done and never brought clean silverware, so many were left to use dirty dinner forks for cake and some had to eat the cake with their hands. Our table repeatedly asked for coffee with cream and sugar and after about 30 minutes got the coffee and sugar, but cream never materialized despite asking several different servers many times. The doors to the kitchen were propped open behind the buffet throughout the entire event, so you could see everything going on in there when getting your food, which was less than appetizing. The kitchen noises were louder than the DJ. Just after serving the cake, they started cleaning the kitchen without first closing the doors and the whole hall was permeated with the very strong odor of bleach. We ended up having to leave early because the smell was so overwhelming that I got a terrible headache. I'm looking forward to my next meal at the Beef House restaurant, but if I'm invited to another event at their banquet hall, I may have to pass.

This restaurant is terrible and really does benefit from a captive audience. Having numerous relatives in central Illinois/Indiana and having gone to college down there, I can confirm that it really is the only game in town until you get over to Champaign, West Lafayette or Indianapolis. And I think the owners are well aware of this. How else could they charge $15 for what is, at best, a completely mediocre cheeseburger. I can get full-on gourmet burgers in Chicago for that price (or cheaper!) that are prepared by honest-to-goodness chefs with amazing culinary skills. The salad bar is disgusting and the pasta dishes are what I would expect a toddler with a box of Kraft Mac and Cheese to come up with. The one shining spot would be the complimentary rolls and strawberry jam, but they certainly do not warrant a trip to this establishment by themselves. You're better off wasting a little extra gas and heading into Champaign. At least they have a couple of decent restaurants and mid-grade chains there, like TGI Fridays, etc. Yes, this place is so bad I'm actually recommending that you eat at TGI Fridays instead. If this really is one of Indiana's "best kept secrets", it can (and should) remain a secret.

After much consideration I have to give our visit one star. We were there to celebrate our anniversary/valentine days for a nice dinner for the two of us, which we have done numerous times. We were seated in the dining room with tables to seat from four to six. They had a group of young couples with children that they kept adding tables for and ended up with them sitting a few inches from our table. I might add that they had seated them three times before they were satisfied. The tables were so close that the waitress had to stand on her toes and scoot sideways to get between them. They then placed the kids at our end of the table. They do have a larger dining room for just such groups as my family has met there numerous times and we were accommodated nicely in that room. If that wasn't enough one of the employees knew the couples and came out and had a squeal fest with one of the women. The service was at best iffy as we had the same waitress and that table was very demanding so she was constantly at their table. The food was so/so as the steaks were not cooked as we ordered, but the waitress never returned to inquire so we basically ate salad and our potato and took the steak home in doggy bags. The food was expensive, not cooked to order, the service bad and the accommodations horrible. To make matters worse I contacted them directly and expressed our displeasure and they never even responded which only goes to show that as long as they get your money they don't care if you get the food and service you deserve. I think that was our last visit and I will make sure that we don't have another family outing there.
