A delightful place for breakfast! Visited SS after church for a stealthy breakfast...we got it! Me: 1/2 order biscuits and gravy (ask for gravy on the side so you can take what you need), crispy bacon and egg whites. So delish! Hubby had the blueberry pancakes, he said they were average. He said the blueberry gel/glaze topping was a bit much. Our server was amazing... she was friendly, helpful and down to earth. Coffee refills are a thing at SS, had 3 refills and they were still offering more, lol. Next time we are in town, I would like to try SS for dinner. Despite my husband's "meh" pancake reviews, I would recommend this establishment!

Great home cooking type food! I highly recommend their chicken and dumplings! All of their stuff is wonderful and homemade!

Ever heard the saying that something was so good you wanted to slap your mama? Well this place was so bad I wanted to slap the owner's mama! Where do I start...the waitress was baby sitting her 4 year old while on the job, and the 4 year old started wailing like he was getting eaten by an alligator. No big deal. I never paid attention to the condition of the straw for my drink until this visit. Straw paper cover had dirt marks on it, upon removal the straw looked like it had been through WWII with kinks and holes throughout. I don't want to know how many times that straw made it home with the server before returning in the same, unwashed server pouch. At the advice of a friend I ordered the prime rib which he had during the bicentennial fair and he said it was awesome. Mine came out and was obviously cooked the day before, or the day before that, and reheated. It didn't have a single drop of juice anywhere on the plate because it was so dry. I informed the server and she first said the prime rib arrived to the restaurant cooked medium rare. Wait...wtf...who sells cooked prime rib to restaurants??? After informing the cook that I didn't appreciate his work of culinary excellence, she returned and stated she was mistaken--the prime rib was merely frozen. Whatever. Possibly the worst piece of meat I've ever had. But I reminded myself it still was, in fact, steak, and that I should be thankful I wasn't starving in Africa. I grinded it out until I could swallow it. The collard greens had enough salt to kill a sea lion, Jesus. Learn to cook without contributing to the diabetes epidemic. Lastly, the red beans and rice were obviously reheated in a microwave. Was a shame because I could tell if they were cooked that day they would have been much better, instead they resembled dog food and I could barely distinguish the rice from the beans. What a disaster of a dinner. "Kitchen Nightmare" doesn't even begin to describe this place.

Located off the street a ways Southern Style is a great local joint for comfort food and good ol' hospitality. The servers here really are good at their job and actually seem like they enjoy it which is hard to find now a days. They take pride in their food and always make sure you got exactly what you wanted and if you say it wasn't everything you hoped for they will take it back and cook it again no questions ask or give you something else. I've had several fish dishes here and all were delicious especially the catfish. the Cajun food they have here isn't anything to go gah gah over but still simple and good cooked meals.

My wife found this one on Yelp as we were passing through Connersville on the way home to Muncie. I'm sorry it's not closer to home! She enjoyed the gumbo, and I thought the pork chop dinner was very good. But the real highlight was the baked beans, which may be the best I've ever had in a restaurant. I was disappointed that there was no chicken and dumplings on the menu. I guess that's not offered every day. Still, next time we're though that area, we'll be sure to stop in.

Few restaurants have made me feel more welcome than Southern Style. It is a tiny spot with heavy wooden tables- like at your grandparent's house- of the "they don't make 'em like this anymore" variety, a counter (who doesn't love sitting at a counter?), an amazing mural of various cartoon animals enjoying themselves at a party on the bayou, and a LCD TV that doesn't seem to get any channels other than QVC and the Home Shopping Network. The food is- as the name indicates- all southern style. While I was walking in I assumed it would be all soul food- fried chicken, catfish, greens.- Yes they have all those things, but they also have a lot Cajun/Creole dishes including po' boys. I had the gumbo and the fried oyster po' boy. The gumbo was a little salty and the bread for the po' boy probably came from Sysco, but hey- this is a Cajun place in Connersville. This isn't Papa Roux, Yats, or Zydeco's, but it is good stuff. This place would be very little without the owner and her waitresses.- The sweetest people you will ever meet, the kind of friendly folk that give you hope for humanity.- Not only are friendly, but they somehow manage to be authentic while doing it. When they ask if you want more coffee or if everything tastes good it's not because they have been programmed, threatened, or because they feel like they have to due to some deep-seated irrationality. They want to know. They want you to enjoy yourself, and they want you to actually feel welcome. There is no "eat and get out" mentality here, and your server is not waiting to flip your table. Which is shocking given how affordable the menu is. Two people could eat here for about $15 including drinks. I'm not saying flock to Connersville by any means, but if you find yourself in the area don't despair- the best greasy-spoon Cajun restaurant you have never seen is right around the corner.

I've been writing a lot of negative reviews lately, so I thought I'd fix my Yelp karma and write a good one about this very welcome little restaurant in Connersville. Yes, folks, Southern Style (or "The Southern," if you're a local) is housed in what used to be the East Side's B&C Video. It's kind of bizarre to walk in and remember what it used to look like (dark and seedy are the first words that come to mind), because it's now bright and cheery, with a fun airbrushed mural of a bayou at night along one entire wall. It's still a completely no-frills place, but nice to sit down somewhere that isn't packed with loud groups of kids or reeking of smoke. The bathroom is unisex, but has always been immaculate every time I've been in there. One of the best part about Southern Style are the waitresses. All of them are fantastic, another rarity in good ol' C'ville. They're always friendly, efficient and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you enjoy your experience. I've always been here for lunch or dinner, so I can't comment on the breakfast offerings. They always have several specials - the chicken and dumplings is a favorite - and you can never go wrong with the Creole gumbo. The portions are huge, so come here hungry. And while a lot of folks think that it's somewhat expensive, I don't think we've ever paid over $20 for a meal for two. They also offer catering, a big plus in my book. This area of Indiana needs more places like Southern Style.
