My wife and I are visiting family in Columbus and were hungry for some Japanese food. We have lived in Los Angeles for the past 8 years, and have deep connections to Japan and have been a couple of times. The food here was very good, all in all. I admit we weren't expecting too much in the small town Midwest, but were pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed lunch today. We were the only diners for most of our meal, but then a few others came in as we were leaving. The decor is fine, with many authentic Japanese items throughout the restaurant. The owners are very friendly and welcoming, and our service was top notch. Drink orders were taken right away and delivered quickly. We were given ample time to consider the menu, which includes a section of Thai food and a lunch menu that had very reasonable prices. My wife had the tempura soba noodles, and I had the teriyaki chicken lunch combo (bento). The food arrived quickly, but not overly so. The Miso soup was excellent, and reminded me of the delicious miso we ate daily in Japan. The tempura was good, though I did miss the usual dipping sauce that normally comes with it. To be fair, I didn't ask for it, and if I had, I'm sure they would have accommodated. The soba noodles were very good. The chicken teriyaki was good, though the sauce had a bit of a different flavor than most other teriyaki I've had. Not bad, just different. The California roll that came with the bento was good, but again, they did not serve wasabi nor a small bowl to mix the wasabi and soy sauce for dipping the roll. The edamame was good, served chilled with just the right saltiness. All in all a good experience. If we lived here, we would become regulars. I recommend you give Hisui (new name) a try.

Unfortunately for Columbus the city no longer has an authentic Japanese restaurant. Satuma was taken over by a Thai chef. He still retains most of the original menu but the quality and authentic flavor are gone.

Love this place!!! Very authentic. Great service. Best place to get sushi. My husband and I eat there every chance we get.

Excellent food! Tako su is outstanding Maguro is excellent, and the Beef Curry is amazing! Misao ("Father" the sushi chef) and Clara are the owners and are always there. If something isn't right they ensure you are taken care of and will go out of there way to make it right. Have not found a place 1/2 as good in San Diego.

Waited 35 mins for the $26 per person shabu shabu to come, and finally couldn't wait any long because the waitress attitude! I just don't understand the way she talked to us after waiting all that long, absolutely no sense of apology and made all kinds of impatient "it's coming it's coming in one minute" , well keep lying! So disappointed just don't understand why cutting some vegetables and bring raw beef to the take takes you ages?! And the place is definitely overpriced! Went to Pho Shiki instead, so much better!

The Katsu curry with pork cutlets is great comfort good. We love the green tea and the service is super! I have also had the udon and several sushi offerings in the past. Our whole family is pleased when we come for a special treat!

I traveled to Japan this summer and fell in love with authentic Japanese food. I live in Indianapolis and have had a really hard time finding any authentic Japanese restaurants since I've been back. Hibachi isn't even traditional Japanese food. I fell in love with Shabu Shabu in Japan and immediately searched yelp for it when I returned. This restaurant was the only place that came up that had it. I couldn't justify driving an hour just for a restaurant, so I waited until I needed to be in Columbus. Tonight I had to drive to Columbus to pick a gift up for my husband. I decided to stop in. Now I know, IT IS TOTALLY worth the drive. I will be driving back, just to eat. If you don't know what shabu shabu is, it is similar to fondue in that you cook it yourself, but it is so much more! It is thinly sliced beef that you boil with Japanese vegetables. When you are finished you are left with a wonderful broth that you garnish with scallions, spices, and lemon and drink. The meal here is very similar to what I had in Japan, better than I expected. They also have sushi, curries, ramen and many other traditional dishes. To close, I have to say something about the service which is what made me give this a five instead of four star rating. When I arrived, I inquired about the shabu shabu and my waitress told me that they only make it for two people and if I wanted it for one, I'd have to pay the price for 2. Dejected, I told her I'd pick something else. Minutes later the head chef came out to ask if I'd had shabu shabu before (apparently people rarely order it, I don't know why!) and I told her my story. She said she would gladly make it for one, although she doesn't normally do that. All in all, this place is amazing and I am jealous of people that live close because this would easily be my favorite restaurant if I lived closer.

Best sushi!!!!! I'm from California, and when I moved here I was soooo sad that people don't really have sushi as often here as back home. I tried a couple of other places and none come close to Satuma!! I love the plum roll :) and everything else is amazing too!

drove an hour from Bloomington to have some authentic Japanese food.. and I was really sad.. Not going to lie, the food is definitely authentic, but that does not equate to quality. Prices are decent, menu is tight reflecting a small kitchen producing their best dishes, but overall the food reflects a standard Japanese restaurant ran in the US in the possibly 1960's. Case in point-- the aemono is spaghetti in seasoned mayo, and the side salad was doused in a simple soy-sauce based dressing. Tempura batter is crispy but not fantastic.. decent, as restaurants in the past now are. I had the chirashi and the fish was not fresh-- I spat out maguro (mackeral). Presentation of the chirashi was elegant, but very simple. Tobiko was not fresh either, but I just lowered my expectations and chowed down. Very strange experience, eating stale tobiko.. Spoke to the waitress about the maguro and she was hesitant but finally asked the chef to exchange it for a piece of sake (salmon).. Chef was nice enough to, and even gave me a nice fatty slice. No doubt this restaurant was probably wonderful years ago, but the dishes, decor and presentation are dated, and it really shows. Won't be returning, but was an interesting blast back to the past. For some reason the polaroids at the entrance made me really sad.. This restaurant must have been well-loved in its heyday.

Visited for dinner with my husband. Had the salted salmon, which was well prepared and tasty. The salad and miso soup were both good. Service was prompt and friendly. Tasted my husbands beef teriyaki -- like it. Will go back.

If you want sushi, this is the place, 4 stars. If you want any other Japanese food, I would recommend New Japan instead.

Sushi was not very bad but it was extremely expensive. I ordered assorted sushi and waitress recommended me chef's selection, so I said yes. There were 10-15 pc of sushi and I was surprised to see the bill later as sushi was $50,which was double from the price on the menu, they kept saying that chef's selection is expensive and there is no such price in menu. Very disappointed with the manner of service.

Two visits. Good fish - fresh and nice portion sizes. A la carte sushi pricing is high compared to Indiana competition. Combo pricing is in line with others - and includes soup and salad. The Miso had a nice consistency and got favorable remarks from both diners. My companions Tekka Donn looked great and he was impressed. The salad dressing was really nice - salad itself was basic but the dressing made it. Service was very friendly and attentive =- spoke with the owner who provided some local advice. Will return.

Live in the DC Metro area so we did not expect to have the quality of sushi that was offered. Sushi was A++++, and staff very friendly. Excellent dinner, value and fun!
