Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Pros: excellent patio that was pleasant to sit on and plenty of parking. Cons: well, everything else, really. The service was slow, the food was bland and on the low end of run-of-the-mill as far as Mexican food goes. The queso dip was OK though. What really ticked me off? I ordered a strawberry daiquiri. My sister ordered a virgin (non-alcoholic) strawberry daiquiri. We could not tell the difference. We each went back and forth tasting each others (because initially we thought he made a mistake and gave me the virgin). All four of us tried them, and no one could tell which had the alcohol in it.

I love Mexican food and this place is really good. I would give it five stars but some times they put to much salt in there pork. But this Is a place I recommend if u like Mexican food

My experience at El Salto was mixed. I arrived there on a weeknight to have dinner with my dad. We were sat right away but a server did not come to our table right away. In fact it was about 10 minutes before they acknowledged we were there. This was frustrating especially for a weeknight when they weren't as busy. In terms of food, my dad and I split the fajitas for 2. There was plenty of food for both of us and we even had leftovers. I would say this was a good value for what we paid. It wasn't the best Mexican food I've had but it was the worst. Expect standard Mexican fare when you walk in. You do need to be careful to not let the food burn though. They bring it out with the burner still on and the meat continues to cook at your table.

I've always had great service at El Salto, and the food is tasty and reasonably priced. The staff is extremely attentive and constantly checking on if refills of chips and salsa and drinks are needed. It can get loud due to the bar in the same room, but it's still easy to carry on a conversation. The spices don't require much of a commitment from the diner, but if one wants things spicier or hotter, such requests are easily accommodated.

I was a little unsure about what to expect for El Salto, but to my surprise it was rather delicious! The chips seem to be of the homemade variety and the salsa was full of flavor and the guacamole met my expectations. I ordered the chicken enchiladas dinner and had enough for the next day! The food was very fresh and the environment was nice. It's in a strip mall, so it wasn't the most authentic of the local Mexican restaurants. We had the fried ice cream for desert. It was good, but they really loaded it with whipped cream where I would have preferred more ice cream!

Part of the local chain. Good Mexican food though. We had fajitas, carne asada tacos, guacamole and quesadilla. Everything was fresh and the 1/2 price Wednesday margaritas tasted sooo good. Although I think they cut the tequila out. The guacamole and quesadilla were pretty standard but the fajitas for 2 comes with everything you could ever want on a tortilla for $20.00.

I've been to this restaurant on multiple occasions and I have always enjoyed the food. The prices are extremely reasonable and the wait staff is consistently friendly.

I went to El Salto for lunch with a friend and was not impressed. I ordered the torta ahogada and it was okay. The torta was filled with carnitas, grilled onions, and guacamole and was covered in an overly salty, bland, cold salsa. I had a couple of problems with this: First, the guacamole added a soggy texture to the inside of the sandwich, which was not pleasant. A torta ahogada should be soft on the outside from soaking in the sauce and firm on the inside since it is filled with meat; this was a soggy mess. Secondly, the sauce that covered the torta was cold. A hot sandwich + cold, salty sauce = no thank you. The salsa that was served with the chips tasted like it was from a jar. The service was good and our server was very nice, but I was not impressed with the food.

Went for half priced margaritas on Wednesday, didn't grab food while there. For half priced margaritas you can't really go wrong. Plus the live music was pretty good as well. I would definitely go back to try the food as it did look pretty good on my neighbors plates.

Impromptu stop for dinner was exceptional. Maybe we lucked out, but for an "authentic" Mexican restaurant in Indiana, I.E. Tex Mex joint, it was excellent. Granted, it was a Tuesday night, 6 pm, and we beat the crowd. I like seafood, so I tried the shrimp quesadilla. I subbed bell peppers with poblano and WOWZA, so delish. Ingredients were all grilled and so good! Flour tortilla was toasted before being sauced with their yummy cheese sauce, extra yum! Shrimp was not overcooked... Randy was our waitress, and very attentive. Cuervo margaritas in the rocks with salt were pleasant. Mixer was mediocre, tequila pour was above adequate. Husband had steak dish with onion and bacon... Steak cooked perfectly medium, but bacon overwhelmed the dish. Will surely go back. 200% better than local equivalent Hacienda (overrated!) and vying heavily with prior fave El Bracero in Michigan City.

By far my favorite Mexican restaurant for a casual weeknight meal, especially on the patio when the weather cooperates. The food is consistently good, always hot and fast. Drinks are generously poured and adequately priced. Most servers are efficient and friendly and only check in when they notice we need another beverage or the bill. The homemade chips are always hot and crisp; the salsa is fresh with chunks of onion and cilantro. There's a bit of a spicy bite, but they also provide hot sauce if the salsa needs more heat. I love the Alambre (this dish includes bacon and poblanos...heavenly) and the cheese steak tacos, while my husband enjoys the tacos de carne asada with corn tortillas. The tamales are also decent. If you're there on a Tuesday, be sure to ask for the margarita special: buy one at full price, get the second for $0.25. We each ordered an entree and had two drinks, but the bill was only $33.00. Not bad. Although I'd rather go to Tequila in Crown Point for an upscale Mexican meal, El Salto never disappoints for a quick, casual meal. Even though my husband and I lovingly call it "The Salto," apparently it means "The Jump." Hmmmmmm.

Why all the negative reviews?? When thinking of the options for Mexican in NW Indiana Area... El Salto is choice! Don't hesitate to visit. Their Queso Dip is killer.
(4)Sean T.
Meh...step up zfrom taco bell, just a much higher price point... had the carnitas, a buddy of mine had steak tacos, and my other friend had the burrito dinner w sour cream... cheese dip appetizer n beans I swear are out of cans... authentic canned cuisine... 1 star for effort and 1 star for ambiance

Fairly run-of-the-mill Mexican spot. I found the salsa and queso dip fairly bland. The food was ok, but nothing spectacular. Didn't seem to be a lot of other options in Chesterton though as far as Mexican.

The service was TERRIBLE. Had to wait well over an hour for food and the restaurant was not even that busy. The good is not that good and I agree with comments made by DJ S. I have eaten at the one in Valpo and it is terrible as well. Was hoping to see a change....but that was not the case and I am DONE with this restaurant. Do not recommend at all.
(1)Laura R.
When we go out to eat, El Salto is always the first choice. Everything is fresh and served hot. The employees are all friendly.

Are these people serious? I guess living in Chesterton or Valpo people really don't know terrible Mexican food from authentic. It's really sad to see this place get high reviews when the food is god awful. I mean, the food here is horrendous. That's right. Horrendous. TWELVE DOLLARS for an entree that consists of chicken, beans, rice, and a tortilla. More bland than Poi. This stuff had to come out of a can or something. Cheap un-authentic Mexican food. The new bartender (the skinny white guy), could have a room temperature I.Q. as well. I heard this place was under new management. Must be why it went downhill so fast. Save yourself the money and the bland taste in your mouth and go to El Amigo in Valpo. It's the most legitimate authentic mexican food in either town. Will never eat here again.

This place used to be okay but in the last year it has gone down hill. Prices are higher and the service is very slow. The food is okay but not enough to make up for the price and service. Do yourself a favor and go to El Canterito by Hooligans instead. Its better food at lower prices.

Always good food and excellent Margaritas - sitting at the bar is my personal favorite cause mikes service is truly intuitive and spot on !
(5)Josh H.
Great food and decent prices! Made me wish I lived in the area. The margarita I had was amazing, but if having it with a meal you might want to get the smaller size, the bigger one is huge! I couldn't finish it and that's saying something.

Another stop on my boyfriend's and my midwest Mexican tour. This place was pretty good. I got the chili colorado and Dave got the enchiladas yolanda. Mine was pretty good. I thought the beef tasted a little cheap, but their guac was amazing. There was a bit of a language barrier with our waiter, but you'll have that. What was really good, though, was the fried cheesecake we got for dessert. I was so uncomfortably full for the rest of the night. I really liked the atmosphere and would come here again, but it might not be my first choice.

Great place for a spur-of-the moment dinner after a day at the beach. Service was great, food tasty. Ate outside on the patio, which was nice except that it was a smoking area.
(4)Joshua S.
I love this place! There food is amazing! This is the best Mexican restaurant in the U.S! Come here if you want a very good Mexican place!
(5)Annette H.
Burnt food, long waits...this place has gone DOWN HILL in last few years. They finally have more wait staff but maybe the kitchen could use the attention!
(2)Deanna S.
Had a hankering for a margarita so we stopped here for dinner as we were headed to Michigan. Overall it's not bad. I love that they have all types of margaritas and they come in 4 sizes. But when it comes to a real Margarita all ya need is a simple on the rocks Patron with salted rim. Mmm, they were good. I opted fro small and my husband got medium...boy was that medium big! He didn't even finish it. Small is 8 bucks, medium 9.50. For dinner my boys got the cheese quesadillas, I ordered fish tacos and my husband had a trivets of a chixken, shrimp and beef soft tacos. my fish (Mahi mahi) were just right. Light and not heavy at all. I tried one of my husband's tacos and boy it tasted like it was dunked in salt!!! Not tasty at all. He likes that, I suppose. Next time we are in Chesterton, we'll stop back.

What an amazing restaurant! Food is great and so is the service my favorite is the carne asada dinner!
(5)Jer B.
The service was great, but the food was average. The price seemed kinda high for the amount of food you get. I ordered a burrito. It was good, but seemed kinda small. No rice or beans came with it and it was almost 12 bucks. Ehhhhhhh. There's better places to go for Mexican food.
