Finally went to this lovely ice cream joint after driving by many times saying "we should go in there". The first thing that hit me was the awesome retro décor. I loved that! They use old bowling alley seats as booth seating and have great window seats near the front as well. I absolutely love that they don't have 18 million flavors of ice cream. You can tell that each flavor was made with great care and thought. This will definitely be our family's ice cream shop, hopefully for years to come.

Wonderful. The gelato and sorbet are just great. The service was wonderful especially from Gracie. Highly recommend not the same old thing has a nice old time feel. Definitely worth the trip.

Dog Days is a wonderful addition to Chesterton! The ice cream is just amazing. We tried the Bananas Foster, Strawberry and Chocolate with fudge pieces and every bite was delicious! I highly recommend stopping in to this gem in downtown Chesterton!

The black licorice ice cream, while an odd color (slate gray), is delicious. I have been to this ice cream shop twice and have ordered the black licorice both times. If you like anise, I highly recommend trying this flavor. I have also tried the Zanzibar chocolate. It was also very good.

Surprised that there were not that many flavors that appealed to me. Only 2 that I cared to try. (I am not a fan of Gelato or sorbets) But those two were both very good - black cherry and blueberry cheesecake. I would rate this shop higher if the proprietor had been even slightly more attentive. Gave us the feeling he had better things to do.

The owner was nice even though it was really late. Always happy to support small business owners! Try the brownie milkshake!

Excellent ice cream and gelato. It was a fun place to stop while we waited to pick our kid up from camp.

We had a very enjoyable experience here tonight! I went in with my aunt and little cousins (7 and 2) and we all got single scoops. The gelato is super tasty- and having travelled in Europe, I have had some darn good gelato. This place definitely stacks up to the kind you get there, as mentioned by another reviewer. When you get it served in a cup, it comes with delicious pirouline cookies! The decor is really, really cute and the old time, big bang music was really fun for a change of pace. The man that served us was also very friendly. We will all definitely be going back there!

I was actually pretty surprised by how good dog days was. The gelato was just as good as the gelato I had in Europe! They even had the same little spoons that resemble small shovels. When I come back home to visit again I will have to stop in.

It's been awhile since I handed out the fin. Dog Days earned it. Look, there's ice cream that pacify's the need. There's ice cream that's above the grade. And there's places like Dog Days, that serve frozen perfection. I had three different flavors of DD's ice cream: chocolate, strawberry and cookie dough. The cookie dough is pretty damn good and would have tempted five stars alone. Then my son asked me to try the strawberry and chocolate that he ordered. If this description doesn't sell it..nothing will. Their chocolate ice cream is like eating a piece of Portillo's chocolate cake, except frozen. Enough said. Strawberry is a fan favorite for me as flavors go, so I've sampled a great deal of it in my time. I can't recall a better strawberry than Dog Days. It contains pieces of the fruit (common for high grade ice cream only) and has none of the strawberry syrup flavor to it like most strawberry ice creams do. I wished I had the stomach to try more..I would have. Dog Days only has a dozen flavors or so but in my estimation, they're concentrating on high quality over expanding flavor selection. The flavor is obnoxiously good. My only regret was that I couldn't bring any home. I don't note decor unless it's really dirty or captures the imagination. So when my son sat in one of their booths, the old bowling lane double seats around the tables captured my interest. The owner commented that they were found in condition outside a closed bowling alley. I have to commend his luck, and eye for an unusual but very cool style of seat. Dog Days has a great feel to it and the killer ice cream to boot. Cheers!

Fantastic spot in downtown Chesterton. The gelatos and sorbets are amazing and get swapped out with new flavors pretty regularly. Great place for building family memories!

I definitely recommend this place. The ice cream is great and Marty has a great sense of humor-- made my kids smile (which is not easy).

We were on our way back to Chicago from seeing family and I had a taste for ice cream or gelato. I was looking for a place that had frozen yogurt as my mom (who was with us) can't have ice cream (lactose intolerance but can have frozen yogurt). I found this place and walked in...unfortunately they didn't have the yogurt, but they did have lactose free ice cream (soy). Big plus in my book and my mom was happy. I opted for a double scoop gelato ice cream cone...campfire mix (freshly made) and tirimisu....very tasty. Loved the decor of the place...the retro look. The owners must be Polish as they had a Polish tapestry on the wall.....nice touch....and the seats...very cool. I will definitely come to this place again....great local business in downtown Chesterton. And yes, they do accept debit/credit cards now.

I went with my family after my little brother's baseball game last summer. We arrived as a group of about 10 siblings and grandparents and cousins. They were getting ready to close and I could tell everything was all cleaned up, but the guy working seemed happy to help us. The gelato was terrific, and they had enough flavors to make everyone happy. It is a touch more expensive than I had expected, but the quality of the gelato seemed very high. UPDATE: They reopened at their new location (right next to their old location) and they now take credit cards.
