I had the best portabella mushroom sandwich for lunch today. Excellent. Will go again. The place is simple and rustic.

This is a great little place. It is simple and unpretentious, but the food is excellent. They serve a variety of baked goods, the breakfast menu is good, and they have a bread and soup buffet for lunch. It's a bit of a trip from anywhere, but if you happen to be passing through and want a really pleasant breakfast or lunch experience, Klein Brot Haus is worth a stop.

This bakery is top-notch. Everything we have tried here was superb and you can't find anything of comparable quality for anywhere near the price elsewhere around the Indy/Lafayette/central IN area. We load up on their baked goods during the summer months when they partake in the Purdue farmer's market. The dutch apple and strawberry-rhubarb pies are delectable. They also make these peanut butter bars that are both cheap and good. We also like using their bread to make french toast with when we're cooking for company and everyone loves it. It tastes much better than when using any of the store-bought stuff. I would highly recommend coming out here to stock up on any of the plethora of baked goods that they make. I promise that you won't be disappointed.

We have been fortunate to have interacted with Klein Brot Haus for years thanks to the Zionsville Farmers Market. It's one of our "must stop" type of places during the summer, but when the farmer's market goes away, so does our easy access to the goodies. So, we took matters into our own hands and made the trip up to Brookston to visit the source. We picked up some cookies and scones for the trip and a loaf of challah bread for the weekend. Let's just say, I turned the bread into a delicious cream cheese French toast, but it is perfect just by itself, too. Again, I only wish I could be closer to a place like Klein Brot Haus - a place I could just pop in, pick up some fantastic baked goodies and head home - ideally within walking distance to burn a few calories!

Just discovered this bakery @ the Zionsville Farmer's Market. Moved to Zionsville in April & the 1st thing I got @ their table was the Roasted Garlic Bread. Really loved it, but the best discovery, was their Salt Rising Bread. I'm originally from the Columbus, IN area & my Dad used to get Salt Rising bread in that area occasionally. It's a bread that I hadn't had since my Dad died. I hadn't been able to find it in yrs. Another bakery had it @ another Farmer's Market, but when I got it home, it wasn't the same & didn't taste like the same bread I remembered from my youth. The bread that I got from Klein Brot Haus tasted the same. It doesn't seem to be a bread that anyone I know is familiar with or has even heard of, but my sister & I are very happy to be able to get it again. I usually slice it right away & freeze or refrigerate it. Will have to make a road trip to Brookston, IN after farmer's market is closed in Sept. so I can get more to freeze for the Winter months. I recently bought bread from this bakery via the farmer's market on Purdue's campus. It was delicious! I had to freeze the bread to ensure it wouldn't go bad before I had the chance to eat it all.

Our group was visiting Twinrocker Handmade Paper next door. Klein Brot Haus Bakery was a great place for a group of students lead by a teacher to exchange ideas and restore energy supply. Inexpensive/fitting student budget with a selection of tasty sandwiches and soups. Pay attention to "Soup Bar"... And don't forget that it is THE BAKERY !

I super love all the homemade stuff here. From bread, cookies, pies, and sweets to soups and yummy sandwiches, this place is faboo! I wish I lived closer to Brookston so I could go here more often. They do sell some of their soups frozen so you can take them home with you. If I were to suggest one thing it would be the zucchini bread. It tastes so good it almost beats my family recipe, ALMOST......

One of my favorite Brookston restaurants! Klein Brot Haus is a really good bakery and a restaurant with an old-timey feel. They have four different homemade soups daily. The soup & bread bar includes the soups, various breads and salads. You can get the "bar" or order from an assortment of sandwiches and salads ala carte. I particularly like their turkey bacon swiss sandwich on potato bread or challah, with nice grill marks from a panini press. The veggie rollup is also very good, stuffed with sauteed tomato, onion, zuchini, summer squash, onions, mushrooms, and black olives . Sandwiches come with a dill pickle slice, choice of applesauce, chips or cottage cheese, and sometimes a cookie. There are a Greek and a chef's salad which I like, also several others. They always have 2 or 3 fresh Seattle coffees, assorted juices, fancy sodas, and fountain coke products. If you are there for breakfast, the omelets are very good. You can build your own. When it comes time for dessert you may have a little problem -- too many choices! My favorites are the inaugural chocolate chip (originally made for Indiana's Gov. Frank O'Bannon), the pineapple bar, and the rhubarb pie. What delicious rhubarb pie they make!! It is a working bakery and it's fun to peek in through the order window and see a five foot long batch of dough getting worked on. Items you might want to take home with you are their great assortment of frozen soups, breads, pies, and cookies, maybe a kringle or a Swedish tea ring (always sure to make you popular when you take one visiting). I like it that there are all different types of people who come in -- local people, business people, farmers, tour groups, bicyclists, tourists and travelers. WIFI is available for free, and there is a wheelchair ramp at the front door.

Basic premise of this discussion: you agree the invention of toast was among the greatest moments in human history. If you like toast simple- just butter or honey- then the sprouted wheat bread is an appropriate tribute to human achievement. If you like an egg or pb&j or anything a little more complicated on your toast, then salt raised is the canvas on which to build your masterpiece. Road trip worthy but be careful if cycling as the open plains are windy.

It is a shame this bakery is in the middle of nowhere, because it is damn good. I ended up stopping in after 4 days of chaperoning kids at a nearby summer camp and needless to say, I was exhausted and starving. The Klein Brot Haus is a quaint little bakery on a quaint little street in a quaint little town. I don't think it gets more small town Americana than this, I mean it even had little old ladies sitting at a table playing bridge. I had a raspberry cheese danish that was amazing - but it was hard to decide what to pick out because everything looked so good, and they had so many different things to choose from, muffins, cookies, bars, pastries...and it smelled heavenly just walking through the door. I also picked up a loaf of rye bread, it being a brot haus and all...and wow. I guiltily shirked my usual refined carb avoidance and ate the majority of it myself after I brought it home, it was soooo good. Their coffee left a little to be desired though, they have it premade in the carafes that have the button you press on the top...it wasn't very hot and most likely had been there a while. So avoid the coffee, enjoy everything else!

(FYI, my review is for Klein Brot Haus at the Beach, in Monticello, since it is not yet on Yelp anywhere that I can find!) EDITED TO ADD: Just added the Beach one in Monticello...should be up soon. I've never done that before! :) We seriously ate breakfast here EVERY day that we were in Monticello, if that tells you anything...even came for an afternoon snack one day. ;) My man and I are suckers for sweets (he more than me), and who can resist a perfectly crafted pastry? Not I! The first visit, we tried quite an assortment...we had a white cake donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles, a sour cream cake donut, and split a huge iced cinnamon roll (well, split half of it...and saved the rest for later!). We each had coffee, of which there was a nice assortment. I got a shot of raspberry syrup in mine, which was nice. It was good coffee too! We're Starbucks people (I know, I know), so it was a relief to find a place where we could get our morning coffee each day! On our other visits, we tried the biscuits and gravy, cheese Danish, chocolate croissant, more cake donuts, Baklava, and something else that I can't remember at the moment...but whatever it was, it was delicious. The assortment of food is mind-boggling...little carrot cakes, so many different donut varieties, cookies, Baklava, croissants, rolls, breads...you just cannot believe how much they have when you walk in! The food is all homemade fresh each day, and there are also loaves of different breads you can buy and take home. I really wanted to try a Chicago dog, because I do love a good Chicago dog, but we just didn't have time (or room in our tummies, what with all the pastries!). The service here was excellent as well. The people who work here are patient and friendly (they have to be patient because, believe me, it's tough to decide when all of those goodies are in front of you!), and always smiled and treated us well. This place doesn't look like much from the outside, and I was skeptical when we pulled up, I'll admit. But it won me over in a snap, and I'm trying to find an excuse to head up to Monticello just so I can pop in for a yummy treat! Okay, maybe Brookston because it's closer to Lafayette where my family still lives. ;) Either way, I'm sure the food and service are consistent. There need to be more places like this around... Yes, instead of so many Starbucks. :)

Discovered this place today and it is a hidden gem. Everything fresh and made to please. My husband had pancakes and requested that his bacon be extra crispy. It was perfection. When he mentioned that he preferred his pancakes without powdered sugar, they were quicky replaced. My eggs were tasty, as were biscuits and sausage. Lots of baked goods for sale, and a wide selection of frozen soups and even beautifully carved wooden kitchen utensils. Highly recommended.
